  1. Thanks.

  2. Thank you.

  3. And on that, if you haven't yet received a copy, this little summary of what Ezra and Nehemiah, the book next to it, they go as a pair.

  4. You can pick up your copy at the table this morning.

  5. It's on page 475, I think. Is that right?

  6. Yeah, 475.

  7. So let's hear God's word.

  8. So Ezra chapter 4, starting at verse 1.

    Ezra 4 chapter mention

  9. And then just go to the very end of the chapter, verse 24.

  10. Thus the work of the house of God in Jerusalem came to a standstill until the second year of the reign of Darius, king of Persia.

  11. We're going to have a second reading, and that comes in Philippians chapter 1, which is on page 1178.

    Philippians 1 chapter mention

  12. Philippians chapter 1, verse 27.

    Philippians 1:27

  13. Whatever happens, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ.

  14. Then whether I come and see you or only hear about you in my absence, I will know that you stand firm in the one spirit, striving together as one for the faith of the gospel,

  15. without being frightened in the one spirit, and that you are in the one spirit.

  16. Without being frightened in any way by those who oppose you.

  17. This is a sign to them that they will be destroyed, and that you will be saved, and that by God.

  18. For it has been granted to you on behalf of Christ, not only to believe in him, but also to suffer for him.

  19. Since you are going through the same struggle you saw I had, and now hear that I still have.

  20. Well, we can go back to Ezra chapter 4, which is on page 475.

    Ezra 4 chapter mention

  21. So let's pray together.

  22. Our Father God, we thank you so much for your truth.

  23. And we pray that your word, written so many centuries ago, would speak to us afresh.

  24. Because you are the living God, and it is your living word that changes lives.

  25. We pray that it will form us and shape us to be the kind of people you have called us to be.

  26. So that we may be ready to live life in this world for your glory and for our good.

  27. Amen.

  28. Well, we had just moved to Carigaline.

  29. We had only been here a few months.

  30. And I was really keen to get to know people in the area.

  31. And a flyer came through the door, looking for people to join the Residents Association.

  32. Perfect opportunity, I thought.

  33. So I rang the number, and I was invited to go to the house of the chairperson.

  34. And we would meet and have a chat.

  35. So off I went a week later.

  36. I knocked on the door, and there was a wonderful welcome.

  37. He and his wife were very friendly.

  38. Tea and biscuits, and we had a great chat.

  39. Then all of a sudden, the atmosphere changed.

  40. You'll have to stop those Bible studies in your house.

  41. I was embarrassed.

  42. I was taken aback.

  43. I gently pushed back, but was informed that there were too many cars around the place,

  44. and it wasn't the place to conduct church activities.

  45. And to that, I soon left.

  46. What began as a very warm and friendly welcome suddenly turned to opposition.

  47. I came home upset.

  48. I was unsettled, wondering what on earth was going to happen.

  49. Well, if you are a Christian here today, the reality is you will face opposition.

  50. Life in the world is filled with hostility.

  51. That was certainly the case for God's people back in Ezra's day.

  52. Look at verse 1, chapter 4.

  53. When the enemies of Judah and Benjamin heard that the exiles were building a temple for the Lord,

  54. you see, plans had been drawn up.

  55. Foundations had been laid.

  56. Building had begun.

  57. But objections arose.

  58. Not everybody in town was happy that the temple was being rebuilt.

  59. We don't want no God folk around here.

  60. You see, this may come as a surprise to us this morning,

  61. but it's normal Christian living.

  62. Jesus put it bluntly in John, chapter 15.

    John 15 chapter mention

  63. You can turn to there.

  64. Keep a finger in Ezra, chapter 4.

    Ezra 4 chapter mention

  65. And go to John's gospel on page 108.

  66. 103.

  67. 1-0-8-3.

  68. John, chapter 15.

  69. John, chapter 15.

    John 15 chapter mention

  70. John, chapter 15.

    John 15 chapter mention

  71. John, chapter 15.

    John 15 chapter mention

  72. So this is Jesus' words to his disciples.

  73. John 15, verse 18.

    John 15:18

  74. If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first.

  75. If you belong to the world, it would love you as its own.

  76. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world.

  77. That is why the world hates you.

  78. Go back to Ezra, chapter 4.

    Ezra 4 chapter mention

  79. Strong words from Jesus.

  80. Now, I'm not saying that on your way home you're going to get rocks thrown at your car,

  81. or that you'll find a protest outside your house.

  82. But if you lived in parts of India or Kashmir, or as this little book from Church and Chains tells us about Iran,

  83. you can pick up a copy on the table.

  84. If you live in these places, that is the sort of thing that will happen.

  85. You see, what God is saying to us and to his church is,

  86. opposition will come in one way or another.

  87. So two things we're going to look at this morning.

  88. The church will endure opposition,

  89. but the church will overcome the opposition.

  90. The church will endure opposition,

  91. but the church will overcome the opposition.

  92. So first, the church will endure opposition.

  93. In Ezra, chapter 4, there are at least three ways we can expect opposition to come.

    Ezra 4 chapter mention

  94. First, it will be subtle.

  95. When the locals heard that the temple was being built,

  96. they wanted in on the action.

  97. So look at verse 2.

  98. They came to Zerubbabel and to the heads of the families and said,

  99. Let us help you build,

  100. because like you, we seek your God and have been sacrificing to him too.

  101. Seems pretty helpful and friendly, doesn't it?

  102. Perhaps these neighbours around abouts aren't so bad after all.

  103. Isn't it great that they want to help out with the temple?

  104. And who knows, they might even join in with the worship.

  105. Praise the Lord for such great people.

  106. Well, not so fast.

  107. The author won't allow us to baptise them and welcome them into membership just yet.

  108. He dropped a massive hint for us in verse 1.

  109. He calls them enemies of Judah and Benjamin.

  110. Enemies of God.

  111. You see, there is an appearance of godly goodness.

  112. We might call them seekers.

  113. Do you see it there in the middle of verse 2?

  114. We seek your God.

  115. It's so very subtle.

  116. They're not carrying placards or forming a protest.

  117. They say they want to be part of God's community.

  118. But pull back the layers and you discover their true heart.

  119. They are, verse 1, enemies.

  120. You see, history records for us what they were like.

  121. No need to turn to it.

  122. But in 2 Kings chapter 17, you can read it when you get home,

    2 Kings 17 chapter mention

  123. gives a complete record of what these people were like.

  124. And it can be summed up in one verse from 2 Kings.

  125. They worshipped the Lord, but they also served their own gods.

  126. You see, they were breaking the very first commandment.

  127. You shall have no other gods before me.

  128. Because God demands exclusive loyalty and devotion from his people.

  129. It's not the worship of God plus my own idols.

  130. It's love God and worship God full stop.

  131. You see, it's so very subtle.

  132. I mean, wouldn't church growth be so much easier if we could say,

  133. come and join us.

  134. Worship God and worship anything else that you like.

  135. I mean, it would be just so easy to fill a hall like this.

  136. Come and join us.

  137. Worship God and worship anything else that you like.

  138. But no, verse 3.

  139. Sir Rubbabel, Joshua, and the rest of the heads of the family of Israel answered,

  140. You have no part with us in building the temple to our God.

  141. We alone will build it for the Lord, the God of Israel.

  142. You see, opposition will come.

  143. And sometimes it's very subtle.

  144. Second, it will be sustained.

  145. Sir Rubbabel's response didn't mean the opposition stopped.

  146. In fact, it continued on and on and on for decades.

  147. Look at verse 4.

  148. Then the peoples around them, showing their true colors,

  149. set out to discourage the people of Judah

  150. and make them afraid to go on building.

  151. They bribed officials to work against them and frustrate their plans.

  152. Discouragement.

  153. Fears.

  154. Frustration.

  155. It's a lethal combination.

  156. You put in so much effort into Carigalline Baptist Church.

  157. But what's the point?

  158. I mean, it's not exactly the most popular place to be on a Sunday morning.

  159. People won't like it if you keep on with that God talk.

  160. Just keep quiet.

  161. Or you may find you lose your friends or your job.

  162. Are you still meeting in that community center?

  163. Forty years.

  164. You still haven't got your own building?

  165. Now maybe we could cope with comments like that if they were every so often.

  166. But discouragement and frustration don't take holidays.

  167. Opposition is sustained.

  168. Notice the mention of the kings.

  169. The opposition continued.

  170. Look at the end of verse 5.

  171. During the entire reign of Cyrus, king of Persia.

  172. All the way down to the reign of Darius, king of Persia.

  173. Now if you were to look up the history records, that's about 20 years.

  174. 20 years of opposition.

  175. And if you think that's a long time, look at verse 6.

  176. At the beginning of the reign of Xerxes, they lodged an accusation against the people of Judah and Jerusalem.

  177. And more than that, verse 7.

  178. In the days of Artaxerxes, king of Persia, Bishlam, Mithridus, Tabeel, and the rest of his associates,

  179. wrote a letter to Artaxerxes.

  180. Which was a letter of opposition we'll see in just a moment.

  181. Now the time between Darius and Xerxes, again if you look up the history records, is about 30 years.

  182. And the time between Xerxes and Artaxerxes was about 60 years.

  183. So if you do all the sums between these four kings, we have a sustained opposition for over 100 years.

  184. In other words, opposition to the people of God and the work of God never ever stops.

  185. We have an enemy, Satan and his minions.

  186. And he will use every tactic possible to halt and disrupt the work of God and the building of his church.

  187. Alex referenced it earlier, that he heard of stories within the Christian Union where they were facing some opposition.

  188. There are CUs in the UK who have been refused the opportunity to set up a Christian Union.

  189. If it happened there, why can it not happen here?

  190. Maybe you're going through a trial or a time of suffering.

  191. And there's that whisper in your mind.

  192. What's the point of being a Christian?

  193. It only brings trouble.

  194. Year after year.

  195. Decade after decade.

  196. Generation after generation.

  197. It's constant.

  198. It never ends.

  199. Opposition keeps coming.

  200. It's not only subtle.

  201. It's sustained.

  202. But third, it will also be sinister.

  203. Ezra, the author, begins chapter 4 talking about opposition to the rebuilding of the temple.

  204. But now he inserts a thing about the building of the city.

  205. He jumps forward in time but brings it to us now.

  206. And he talks about the opposition to the rebuilding of the temple.

  207. Local authorities are taking God's people to court.

  208. Have a look again at verse 7.

  209. And in the days of Artaxerxes, king of Persia, Bishlam, Mithridus, Tabeel and the rest of his associates wrote a letter to Artaxerxes.

  210. But what was in the letter?

  211. Well, have a look at verse 11.

  212. To king Artaxerxes.

  213. From your servants the men of Trans-Euphrates.

  214. The king should know that the people who come to you, who have come up from us from you, have gone to Jerusalem and are rebuilding that rebellious and wicked city.

  215. They are restoring the walls and repairing the foundations.

  216. Verse 16.

  217. We inform the king that if this city is built and its walls are restored, you will be left with nothing in Trans-Euphrates.

  218. Wow.

  219. It all sounds so very sincere.

  220. Oh, king Artaxerxes, we would hate for anything bad to happen to you or your kingdom.

  221. Even though he has them oppressed in another land, not their own.

  222. You're such a good king.

  223. Well, the truth be known, they are stroking the king's ego to get what they want.

  224. Look how the king responded in verse 21.

  225. Now issue an order to these men to stop work so that this city will not be rebuilt until I so order.

  226. Be careful not to neglect this matter.

  227. Why let this threat grow to the detriment of the royal interests?

  228. As soon as the copy of the letter of King Artaxerxes was read to Raham and Shimshai, the secretary and their associates,

  229. they went immediately to the Jews in Jerusalem and compelled them by force to stop.

  230. You see, sometimes opposition is blatantly sinister.

  231. They just want to see the work of God stop.

  232. And we need to take this seriously.

  233. Sometimes there will be appeals made to governments and to courts to ensure that God's people have no more influence in society.

  234. It's already happened to some degree in some parts of the island.

  235. And it's happening in many places in the world today.

  236. The appeal to a higher authority to act so that the work of God and his kingdom would stop.

  237. If it happens in other places, it will happen here.

  238. Opposition will be sinister.

  239. So having jumped ahead in time, the author now brings us back to present day and refocuses our attention on the rebuilding of the temple.

  240. Opposition seems to have got the desired effect.

  241. Look at verse 24.

  242. Thus, the work on the house of God in Jerusalem came to a standstill until the second year of the reign of Darius, king of Persia.

  243. It seems the opposition has won.

  244. And isn't that how we can so often feel?

  245. What's the point?

  246. I mean, no one's interested.

  247. You're wasting your time.

  248. Book clubs, Bible stories, they don't work.

  249. Keep with the times.

  250. Get with it.

  251. The Bible is outdated.

  252. Church is irrelevant.

  253. Christianity is over.

  254. Let's just pack our bags and go home.

  255. But not so fast.

  256. Because, second, the church will overcome the opposition.

  257. Look again at verse 24 with me.

  258. Because there is hope in this verse.

  259. Look how it starts.

  260. The work of the house of God in Jerusalem came to a standstill

  261. until the second year of the reign of Darius, king of Persia.

  262. It's a comment from the author reminding us that a king is coming called Darius

  263. who will ensure that the temple of God is going to be built.

  264. And in case we don't believe it,

  265. just look at chapter 6, verse 15 over the page.

  266. Chapter 6, verse 15.

  267. The temple was completed on the third day of the month of Adar

  268. in the sixth year of the reign of King Darius.

  269. You see, the opposition will come,

  270. but God's work continues.

  271. It's easy for us to become discouraged,

  272. fearful, frustrated.

  273. But don't we have a better king and a greater promise?

  274. You see, if God could work through a pagan king like Darius

  275. to see the temple rebuilt,

  276. how much more can we expect God to work through his son,

  277. the promised king called Jesus?

  278. Remember what King Jesus said.

  279. I will build my church,

  280. and the gates of Hades or the gates of hell

  281. will not overcome it.

  282. You see, opposition will come,

  283. but the church will overcome.

  284. You cannot defeat the church

  285. because the church is God's people.

  286. Now, we might be in the business today

  287. of building temples with blocks and stone,

  288. but as a church,

  289. that image,

  290. we are like a temple.

  291. Come with me, please,

  292. to 1 Peter.

  293. It's on page 1218.

  294. 1218.

  295. 1 Peter.

  296. 1 Peter.

  297. 1 Peter.

  298. 1 Peter.

  299. This is a letter written by the Apostle Peter to Christians

  300. who have been scattered all around the place

  301. because of their love for Jesus.

  302. They've been kicked out of their homes,

  303. and they are living far from home.

  304. And he writes to encourage them

  305. in the midst of great opposition.

  306. So, 1 Peter chapter 2, verse 4.

    1 Peter 2:4

  307. As you come to him,

  308. as you come to Jesus,

  309. the living stone,

  310. rejected or opposed by humans,

  311. remember,

  312. he was crucified and put to death on a cross,

  313. but chosen by God and precious to him,

  314. you, the church,

  315. also like living stones,

  316. are being built into a spiritual house

  317. or a spiritual temple.

  318. You see,

  319. Jesus is not building physical temples.

  320. He is building a spiritual temple.

  321. And as we come to Jesus,

  322. and as we place our trust in him,

  323. so we become part of the true temple of God,

  324. like stones being built together.

  325. As we trust in the death of Jesus for our sins,

  326. his resurrection from the grave,

  327. so we are brought together to be a temple of God,

  328. his people.

  329. But it's going to be costly.

  330. Just as Jesus was rejected,

  331. so will his church.

  332. As we live for Jesus,

  333. as we tell others about Jesus,

  334. as we go about our workplace,

  335. as we share the gospel,

  336. opposition will come.

  337. But,

  338. verse 6,

  339. for in scripture it says,

  340. see,

  341. I lay a stone in Zion,

  342. a chosen and precious cornerstone,

  343. that's Jesus,

  344. and the one who trusts in him

  345. will never be put to shame.

  346. Here's the encouragement of this verse,

  347. that those who trust in Jesus

  348. will never be put to shame.

  349. In other words,

  350. it will be hard,

  351. you will face difficulties and struggles,

  352. but we will overcome.

  353. Opposition will end,

  354. and the church will last.

  355. So then,

  356. 1 Peter chapter 5,

    1 Peter 5 chapter mention

  357. or chapter 4 verse 12,

  358. follow with me,

  359. chapter 4 verse 12.

  360. He says to them,

  361. chapter 4 verse 12,

  362. Dear friends,

  363. do not be surprised

  364. at the fiery ordeal

  365. that has come on you

  366. to test you

  367. as though something strange

  368. were happening to you.

  369. You see,

  370. it's normal.

  371. But rejoice

  372. inasmuch as you participate

  373. in the sufferings of Christ,

  374. so that you may be overjoyed

  375. when his glory is revealed.

  376. He's saying to these scattered believers,

  377. opposition will come,

  378. but the church will overcome.

  379. Let's go back

  380. to Ezra chapter 4.

    Ezra 4 chapter mention

  381. So how should we live

  382. in response to these things?

  383. Opposition will come,

  384. but the church will overcome.

  385. How do we live,

  386. and how do we encourage one another

  387. in these things?

  388. First,

  389. three very simple applications

  390. to take away.

  391. First,

  392. protect the church.

  393. Did you notice

  394. in chapter 4

  395. the role

  396. that the leaders played

  397. when opposition came?

  398. Did you see it

  399. in verse 2?

  400. Remember,

  401. they came to Zerubbabel

  402. and said,

  403. let us help you

  404. build a temple.

  405. We worship God too.

  406. Include us.

  407. But,

  408. verse 3,

  409. Zerubbabel

  410. and the rest

  411. of the leaders said,

  412. you have no part

  413. with us

  414. in building the temple

  415. to our God.

  416. You see,

  417. the leaders

  418. led the people.

  419. They protected

  420. the people

  421. from those

  422. who subtly

  423. tried to join

  424. God's people.

  425. You see,

  426. they didn't believe

  427. the same things

  428. and they needed

  429. protected.

  430. Now,

  431. while we all

  432. should be looking out

  433. for each other,

  434. the elders

  435. of the church

  436. have a special

  437. and primary

  438. responsibility

  439. for protecting

  440. the church.

  441. And you are

  442. to hold them

  443. accountable

  444. to protect

  445. the unity

  446. of the church,

  447. to protect

  448. the purity

  449. of the church.

  450. You see,

  451. the church

  452. isn't a club

  453. for any belief

  454. and none.

  455. No,

  456. the church

  457. are the special

  458. treasured

  459. people of God

  460. who Jesus

  461. died for

  462. and those

  463. who trust

  464. in Jesus

  465. and worship

  466. him alone

  467. are part

  468. of his people.

  469. That's one

  470. of the reasons

  471. why we have

  472. a membership.

  473. It clarifies

  474. who are the

  475. true believers.

  476. It protects

  477. the unity

  478. of God's

  479. people

  480. and the purity

  481. of God's

  482. people.

  483. So first,

  484. protect

  485. the church

  486. and elders,

  487. this is your

  488. primary

  489. responsibility.

  490. Second,

  491. not only

  492. protect the

  493. church,

  494. but let's

  495. together pray

  496. for boldness.

  497. Did you see

  498. in verse 4

  499. and 5

  500. the opposition?

  501. Discouragement

  502. and fear

  503. and frustration?

  504. Now how

  505. are we

  506. going to

  507. respond

  508. when those

  509. sorts of

  510. things come

  511. our way?

  512. Well,

  513. here's how

  514. the disciples

  515. responded

  516. when people

  517. opposed them.

  518. You might

  519. remember this

  520. prayer

  521. in Acts 4.

  522. It's on the

  523. screen.

  524. When the

  525. opposition came

  526. and the

  527. persecution

  528. was fierce,

  529. they prayed,

  530. Sovereign

  531. Lord,

  532. you made

  533. the heavens

  534. and the

  535. earth

  536. and the

  537. sea.

  538. You're in

  539. control of

  540. everything.

  541. You rule

  542. everything.

  543. Now,

  544. Lord,

  545. consider their

  546. threats and

  547. enable your

  548. servants to

  549. speak your

  550. word with

  551. great

  552. boldness.

  553. You see,

  554. opposition

  555. doesn't mean

  556. we stop

  557. and pack up

  558. bags and

  559. go home.

  560. It means

  561. we gather

  562. to pray.

  563. But notice

  564. what they

  565. pray for.

  566. They don't

  567. pray for the

  568. opposition to

  569. stop,

  570. but they

  571. pray that

  572. they would

  573. be enabled

  574. to speak

  575. the word

  576. with great

  577. courage.

  578. courage and

  579. boldness.

  580. And if you

  581. were to

  582. read through

  583. Acts,

  584. we see how

  585. the word

  586. of God

  587. was spoken

  588. in opposition

  589. and the

  590. church began

  591. to grow.

  592. We pray

  593. for courage

  594. to speak

  595. out the

  596. truth of

  597. the gospel.

  598. So come

  599. on Wednesdays.

  600. That's why

  601. we gather.

  602. Yes,

  603. we will be

  604. learning to

  605. speak God's

  606. word to

  607. one another,

  608. but I'm

  609. sure as part

  610. of it,

  611. there will

  612. be times

  613. of prayer

  614. as we

  615. encourage

  616. one another

  617. to keep

  618. on with

  619. the work

  620. of God.

  621. So protect

  622. the church,

  623. elders in

  624. particular,

  625. and as a

  626. church together,

  627. let's pray

  628. for boldness.

  629. And then

  630. lastly,

  631. remember the

  632. promise.

  633. Remember that

  634. in verse

  635. 24?

  636. The opposition

  637. meant the

  638. work on the

  639. house of

  640. God came

  641. to a

  642. standstill

  643. until the

  644. year of

  645. King Darius.

  646. You see,

  647. if God can

  648. work through

  649. a pagan

  650. king,

  651. how much

  652. more can

  653. he work

  654. through his

  655. treasured and

  656. special people,

  657. the church?

  658. People like

  659. us who are

  660. gathered here

  661. today.

  662. You see,

  663. the church

  664. belongs to

  665. Jesus.

  666. It's his

  667. church,

  668. and he has

  669. promised that

  670. the gates of

  671. hell will

  672. not overcome

  673. it.

  674. And today,

  675. all over the

  676. world, the

  677. church is

  678. growing.

  679. We mentioned

  680. Iran, one of

  681. the fastest

  682. growing churches

  683. in the world

  684. today, in

  685. such great

  686. opposition.

  687. people are

  688. coming to

  689. Jesus and

  690. trusting in

  691. him in

  692. our towns

  693. and on

  694. campuses and

  695. in our

  696. families.

  697. And you

  698. being here

  699. today is

  700. living proof

  701. that God

  702. keeps his

  703. people and

  704. that the

  705. church is

  706. growing.

  707. Opposition

  708. will come to

  709. the church,

  710. but the

  711. church,

  712. because of

  713. Jesus,

  714. will overcome

  715. the

  716. opposition.

  717. Let's

  718. pray.

  719. Amen.

  720. Our

  721. Father God,

  722. will you

  723. strengthen

  724. us and

  725. encourage us

  726. as your

  727. people

  728. together to

  729. stand strong

  730. in the face

  731. of opposition,

  732. that together

  733. we would run

  734. to Jesus,

  735. that he may

  736. fill us with

  737. courage and

  738. boldness to

  739. keep on

  740. proclaiming the

  741. good news,

  742. trusting your

  743. promises that

  744. you will build

  745. your church,

  746. and the

  747. gates of hell

  748. will not

  749. overcome it.

  750. We pray for

  751. our leaders,

  752. for our

  753. elders,

  754. for Ralph

  755. and Jonathan

  756. and Alex.

  757. Fill them

  758. with your

  759. spirit,

  760. that they

  761. may protect

  762. and guard

  763. and keep

  764. the church

  765. as they

  766. look to

  767. Jesus too.

  768. Father,

  769. send us

  770. out with

  771. your

  772. blessing,

  773. with

  774. courage,

  775. and with

  776. assurance

  777. that you

  778. are with

  779. us.

  780. In

  781. Jesus'

  782. Amen.
