  1. I haven't told you since last year that I love you.

  2. What can I say? You ought to feel neglected, but

  3. I do. You pull out your message notes. You know,

  4. in life, it's very important at different times in your

  5. life to pause and just stop and ask the question, why?

  6. Why am I doing this? What am I doing and

  7. why am I doing this? Why always determines how and

  8. how long. Now, we're starting a brand new year, a

  9. brand new decade. We're starting our 40th anniversary year as

  10. a church. And I want us to just take a

  11. couple weeks and pause and go, what is church and

  12. why do we do it? I think it's important to

  13. go back and remind ourselves what this is all about. Now,

  14. we're gonna start at the beginning. Watch up here on

  15. the screen. The Bible says in Hebrews 2.10, God is

  16. the one who made everything. That's where we start. We

  17. start with God made everything. And all things are for

  18. his glory. You and every plant and animal and rock

  19. are for his glory. But he wanted to have children

  20. to share his glory. The Bible says God invented the

  21. universe because he wanted a family. God wasn't lonely, God

  22. is love, but he didn't need us, but he wanted

  23. a family to love and to share his glory. And

  24. so he created the universe. Now the Bible says this

  25. in Ephesians chapter one. God's unchanging plan, from the very

  26. beginning of time, has always been to adopt us into

  27. his own family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ.

  28. So the whole reason everything exists is God wanted a family,

  29. and he wants that family to be with him forever

  30. and ever and ever. He puts us here on earth

  31. as a trial test, but what is that family called? Well,

  32. we've talked about this before. That family is called the church.

  33. Jesus said in Ephesians, excuse me, Jesus said in Matthew 16,

    Matthew 16:18

  34. verse 18, I will build my church He didn't say,

  35. I'll build a government. He didn't say, I'll build a nation.

  36. He didn't say, I'll build a business. He said, I

  37. will build my church. Jesus is only interested, God is

  38. only interested in his family. Everything else is gonna burn up.

  39. The only thing on planet Earth that's gonna last is

  40. God's family. He says, I will build my church and

  41. all the powers of hell will not defeat it. The

  42. most successful human movement of all time is the church

  43. of God. 2.3 billion believers, followers of Christ. The church

  44. is the largest organization on the planet. Nothing comes close.

  45. The church at 2.3 billion believers is bigger than China.

  46. The church is bigger than China and the United States

  47. and all of Europe put together. Nothing as big as

  48. the planet, the movement of God. You're not just part

  49. of an organization. You're part of a movement, and that

  50. movement is gonna go on for eternity in heaven. Jesus said,

  51. I will build my church, and no dictator and no

  52. ism can stop it. Now, sometimes you hear people say, well,

  53. I love Jesus, but I don't need the church. No, no,

  54. that's a really big mistake people make, because you can't

  55. love Jesus. without loving his bride, his body, his family,

  56. his flock. You can't love Jesus. In fact, the Bible

  57. says this in Ephesians chapter five, verse 25. Christ loves

  58. his church. Whatever he loves, you better love too. Christ

  59. loves his church and he gave his life for it.

  60. Christ died for the church. So don't ever say it's unimportant.

  61. Don't ever say it's, the only people that are gonna

  62. be in heaven is the church. Nobody else is, that's

  63. his family. It's his family. Now it has different labels

  64. on it. Methodist, Baptist, Episcopalian, Catholic, Nazarene, Calvary Chapel, all

  65. the labels are irrelevant. The fact is the people who

  66. are the followers of Christ, they're part of his family,

  67. that's all that's gonna be in heaven. And he built

  68. the universe because he wanted a family. Now, let's just

  69. start with the basics. What is a church? When I

  70. say the word church, some people think of a building. No,

  71. a church is not a building. A church is not

  72. a location. So when I say church, people think of

  73. something they go to attend. People often say, well, I'm

  74. going to church. Technically, that's a wrong statement. The church

  75. is not something you attend. It's a family that you

  76. belong to. Really, it'd be more accurate to not say

  77. I'm going to church, but saying I'm going to a

  78. worship service. Or I'm going to a Bible study. or

  79. I'm going to a fellowship, or I'm going to an

  80. activity of the church. You can't go to a church.

  81. A church is not an event. It has events, but

  82. the church is the family of God. Church is not

  83. an event you attend. It is a family you belong to.

  84. Does that make sense? Okay, so it's not something you

  85. go to. To actually say, well, I'm going to church,

  86. you really mean to say, I'm going to worship, or

  87. I'm going to service, or I'm going to Bible study, whatever.

  88. So it's not a place, it's not an event, it's

  89. not an institution. I'm going to give you a very

  90. specific biblical definition of the church. I'd like for you

  91. to write these four phrases down, okay? Number one, because

  92. once I explain this, then I'm gonna show you five

  93. benefits of being a part of God's family. Number one,

  94. what is a church? The church is God's family on

  95. earth and in heaven. God's family on earth and in heaven.

  96. The church isn't just on, on earth. Many people are

  97. already in heaven. So some of the church, that's God's family,

  98. is already in heaven. Some of the church is still

  99. here on earth. But the church is both in heaven

  100. and on earth, and it is God's family. First Timothy

  101. chapter three, verses 14 and 15 says this. I'm writing

  102. to you so that you'll know how to live in

  103. the family of God. We need to learn how to

  104. live in God's family. That family is the church of

  105. the living God. The support and foundation of the truth.

  106. So anytime you talk about the church, you're talking about

  107. God's family. Anytime you talk about God's family, you're talking

  108. about the church. There is no family of God outside

  109. of the church. It is the same. So it's God's

  110. family on heaven and earth. Number two, it's composed of

  111. saved and baptized believers. The church is composed of saved

  112. and baptized believers. Now you might have your name on

  113. a roll as a child in some church, but that

  114. doesn't make you a part of the church. It just

  115. means you're on somebody's roll. You have to be saved

  116. and you have to be baptized to be a part

  117. of the church of God. Let me just show you

  118. what Jesus said. Mark chapter 16, verse 16. Whoever believes

    Mark 16:16

  119. in me, Jesus said, and is baptized will be saved.

  120. But whoever refuses to believe will be condemned. Now, some

  121. people look at that and go, oh, are you saying

  122. that I have to be baptized in order to be saved,

  123. that it's essential for salvation? No, I'm not. No water

  124. will save you. Only Jesus can save you. No water

  125. will save you. But if you really are saved, you

  126. wanna be baptized. It's a contradiction to say, well, I'm

  127. a follower of Christ, but I don't do what he

  128. tells me to do. That's a contradiction. So maybe you're

  129. not really saved. Baptism is what I call the wedding

  130. ring of the Christian life. This ring doesn't make me married.

  131. It was the commitment in my heart that made me

  132. married when I said I do. This ring is the

  133. outward expression. It reminds me, oh, I made a vow

  134. in my heart. Baptism is the wedding ring of the

  135. Christian life. It doesn't make you a Christian. It shows

  136. that you are. And anybody who refuses to be baptized,

  137. you at every reason of doubt, they've had a commitment

  138. in their heart. Because the first thing Jesus said is,

  139. be baptized as this outward symbol of your inward commitment.

  140. So it doesn't make you a Christian, but notice he says,

  141. anyone who believes and is baptized. Which comes first, believing

  142. or baptism? Believing, right? You believe and then you're baptized. Now,

  143. if you were baptized before you believed, it didn't count.

  144. You don't get any blessing from that. You need to

  145. do it again, because it meant nothing. You just got wet. Okay,

  146. that's all it means. Baptism only matters if you believe first.

  147. Some of you don't even remember your baptism. So how

  148. could you possibly believe? Because maybe you weren't even old

  149. enough to know that. So you believe, Jesus said, and

  150. then you're baptized. Let me show you a couple of

  151. other verses. Acts chapter two, verse 38. This is the

  152. day of Pentecost. This is the day that Jesus began

  153. his church. And Peter preached this sermon. He said this,

  154. repent and be baptized, this is the first day of

  155. the church, in the name of Jesus Christ for the

  156. forgiveness of your sin. Then God will give you his

  157. Holy Spirit. Now in Romans chapter eight it says if

  158. you don't have God's Spirit in you, you're not a Christian.

  159. You're not saved. To not have God's spirit would mean

  160. you don't really know the Lord yet. So he says,

  161. whoever believes in being baptized, he'll be saved. And then

  162. Peter says, repent and be baptized. Now, in that verse,

  163. which one comes first? Repent or be baptized? Repent, right?

  164. So if you were baptized before you repented, it didn't count.

  165. As I said, it was just a nice little ritual,

  166. but it meant nothing. You got no spiritual blessing out

  167. of it, because you didn't even know what the meaning

  168. of baptism was. It comes after you believe, and it

  169. comes after you repent. Now, here's what happens. Same day,

  170. Acts 2 verse 41, it says, then those who believed,

    Acts 2:41

  171. they believed first, were then baptized. See, believing comes before baptized.

  172. And then they became part of the church. Baptism is

  173. the entry door to the church. About 3,000 people that day.

  174. So baptism doesn't bless you if you did it out

  175. of order. And if you believed after you were baptized,

  176. you need to be baptized again. Because it didn't mean anything,

  177. it didn't mean what the meaning of baptism is all about,

  178. all right? So it's God's family on earth, it's composed

  179. of saved and baptized believers. Third part is this, it's

  180. people who are committed to Jesus and each other. To

  181. be a part of the church means I'm not just

  182. committed to Jesus, I'm committed to the other people in

  183. my church family. A church means I am committed to

  184. Jesus and to each other. Now let me show you

  185. a few verses about this. 2 Corinthians 8, verse five. First,

  186. it says, they gave themselves to the Lord, and then, second,

  187. by God's will, they gave themselves to us as well.

  188. This is what we call the first base commitment at Saddleback. First,

  189. you give yourself to the Lord, And then you give

  190. yourself to a group of other Christians. The first one

  191. makes you a Christian. The second one makes you a

  192. church member. Let me say it again. First they gave

  193. themselves to the Lord. That's how you get saved. You

  194. give your life to the Lord. And it says, and

  195. then they gave themselves to us as well. That's what

  196. it means to be a church member. You become a

  197. Christian by giving your life to Christ. You become a

  198. church member by giving yourself to a group of other

  199. people and say, that's gonna be my spiritual home. That's

  200. gonna be my family. That's gonna be my spiritual base

  201. for my life. While I'm here in this area, whatever.

  202. It is a commitment, not simply to Christ, it's a

  203. commitment to another group of other people. And we're gonna

  204. look at that today. Let me show you some other verses.

  205. Romans 12, verse 10 says, you are to be devoted,

    Romans 12:10

  206. circle this, to each other. Not just to God, you

  207. will be devoted to each other as brothers and sisters

  208. in God's loving family. That's what it means to be

  209. a church member. You're not just committed to Christ, you're

  210. committed to his family. You're committed to your brothers and

  211. sisters in that family. Romans chapter 14, excuse me, Romans

    Romans 14 chapter mention

  212. 12 verse four and five. In Christ's body, each member

  213. belongs to who? All the others. You realize this, that

  214. in this church family, I belong to you, you belong

  215. to me, we belong to each other. That's what it

  216. means to be a member of a family. Now notice

  217. it has the word member there. Sometimes you'll hear people say,

  218. I've actually heard preachers on the radio say this. Well,

  219. there's no such thing as church membership in the Bible.

  220. That's just nonsense. The word member came from the Bible.

  221. There was no word member until it was in the Bible.

  222. The word member is used about 100 times in the

  223. New Testament. The whole concept of membership was only about

  224. the church until other people picked it up and all

  225. of a sudden, you know, American Express says membership has

  226. its privileges. No, so now you can be a member

  227. of my book club, you can be a member of

  228. my Facebook following, you can be a member of some

  229. of the Rotary Club, you can be members of a

  230. million other things. But the word member came from the Bible.

  231. And it's talking about being a member of a local

  232. body of Christ. And it's used in a very different way.

  233. It's not talking about secret handshakes and funny hats and

  234. passwords and stuff like that. What is it talking about

  235. in member? Well, look on the screen. 1 Corinthians 12,

  236. 12 to 14. Just as your body has many members.

  237. What are we talking about there? Your hand is a

  238. member of your body. Your ear is a member of

  239. your body. Your eye is a member of your body.

  240. Your nose, your spleen, your liver. These are all members

  241. of your body. Just as your body has many members,

  242. and each member of your body is unique. The liver

  243. doesn't do what the heart does. All your members together

  244. Form your single body, physically. So it is with Christ's body.

  245. He says it's the exact same thing, physical parallel to

  246. a spiritual parallel. Christ's body is the church. He said

  247. all the members of the church make up the body

  248. of Christ, all right? So he's saying here that only

  249. as you're connected does it really, really matter. And then

  250. he says the rest of it. He says this, for

  251. in one spirit, We were all baptized into one body,

  252. regardless of our background, whether Jews or Gentiles or slaves

  253. or free, we all received God's Spirit. He said, it

  254. doesn't matter what your background is, religious background, ethnic background,

  255. language background, racial background, none of that really matters. He says,

  256. regardless of your background, we all receive God's spirit. That's

  257. what puts us in the body. We're baptized into one body,

  258. so the body isn't made up of just one member.

  259. It's all the members connected together. And what is that saying?

  260. It's saying this, you are not the church of God

  261. by yourself. You are not the family of God by yourself.

  262. You're not the body of Christ by yourself. Only as

  263. we are connected together, Are we the family of God?

  264. Are we the body of Christ? Are we God's church?

  265. I'm not the church. You're not the church. But together,

  266. we are the church. And he said it's in that connection.

  267. So only in connection to other members are you actually

  268. in God's family. If you're not connected to other members,

  269. how are you in God's family? So what does that

  270. mean then? What does that mean to be a part

  271. of the body of Christ? Look at these verses. First

  272. Corinthians 12, 25. The way God designed our bodies, physical bodies,

  273. is a model for understanding our lives together as a church.

  274. He says, okay, look at your body and then you'll

  275. figure out how the church operates. Every part is to

  276. be dependent on the other parts. I can't say that

  277. I don't need this part or I don't need that part.

  278. We all need each other and we are to be

  279. dependent on the other parts. It was his intention that

  280. we live our lives together. God never meant for you

  281. to go through life on your own. Now, let me

  282. show you another verse. 1 Corinthians 12, 25 to 27.

  283. The members, notice how many times this word member comes

  284. up in the Bible. The members must have the same

  285. care for each other. That means I gotta care about you,

  286. you gotta care about me. We have to care about

  287. each other. If we are in the family of God,

  288. if we are in the body of Christ called Saddleback

  289. or whatever, there are lots of good churches, just choose one.

  290. I'm not saying just this church, I'm just saying just

  291. choose a place that's gonna be my family. The members

  292. must have the same care for each other. If one

  293. member is hurt or suffers, then all suffer together. And

  294. if one member is honored, all the others rejoice. In

  295. other words, you get a raise, you get promoted, the

  296. whole church should celebrate with you. You get the word,

  297. dreaded word cancer, the whole church should support you when

  298. you're going through those protocols. You are the body of

  299. Christ and each one of you is a necessary part

  300. of it. There's no unnecessary part. People say, well, I'm

  301. not very necessary in my church. Oh, how wrong you are.

  302. If I don't use my gifts, you get hurt. If

  303. you don't use your gifts, I get hurt, so does

  304. everybody else. We all have a different role to play.

  305. Now let me pause here and review what I've said

  306. about what is the church. First I said it's God's

  307. family that's in heaven and on earth. Some's in heaven,

  308. some's on earth. I said it's composed of saved and

  309. baptized believers. If you're not saved, you're not baptized, you're

  310. not a part of the church. Number three, they're committed

  311. to Jesus and each other. We commit to him and

  312. we commit to each other. But then there's one other

  313. fourth part. Write this down. These are people who are

  314. preparing for heaven or Christ's return. Preparing for heaven or

  315. Christ's return. That's what the church is doing. So either

  316. Jesus comes back before I die or he doesn't come

  317. back before I die and I go to heaven first.

  318. Either way, I'm preparing for eternity with Jesus. With him.

  319. Hebrews chapter 12 verse 23 is an important verse. It

    Hebrews 12:23

  320. says this. you are the church of God's children. Okay,

  321. remember it's the family of God. You are the church

  322. of God's children whose names are registered in heaven. You

  323. ought to be grateful for that because you have come

  324. to God Himself and you have come To Jesus. Now

  325. notice this. Your names are registered in heaven. You know,

  326. I've met a few of these Hollywood types and done

  327. some Bible studies for producers and stuff like that up

  328. in Hollywood. And the big deal in Hollywood is to

  329. get on the A-list. Because if you're on the A-list,

  330. you get invited to all the A-list parties. You don't

  331. want to be on the B-list or the C-list or

  332. like some of us, the Z-list. Okay? Because you really

  333. want to be, because the A-list are the best parties

  334. after the Oscars and stuff like that. Well, let me

  335. tell you something. There's something better than being on the

  336. A list. It's being on God's register of names in heaven. Hello?

  337. That is a big deal, okay? That is a very

  338. exclusive list. Not everybody's gonna be on that list. Only

  339. those who've been saved and baptized and joined a part

  340. of God's family. Only God's family is gonna be in heaven.

  341. But that's a very exclusive list. Most important invitation list

  342. you wanna be a part of. How do I get

  343. on that list? Well, that verse said, get to know,

  344. you've come to know God and you've come to know Jesus.

  345. You come to God and you come to Jesus. Now,

  346. we're gonna, in just a second, look at five different

  347. metaphors of the church and what the benefits of that

  348. means to your life. But this week, I did something fun.

  349. I went and I got the original three members of

  350. Saddleback Church, Don Dale, who was the first member of

  351. the church who joined Kay and me, and Lee and

  352. Cynthia Hensler, who were the first people baptized in this church.

  353. And those three were in the very first class 101

  354. that I taught 40 years ago. And I found, oh,

  355. you can see it on the video, but I videotaped

  356. this interview, and I want you to watch this. I've

  357. got a real treat for you today. My oldest friends

  358. at Saddleback Church are sitting on this couch and they're

  359. really old. We're gonna talk about what membership means. These

  360. are people from the very first membership class. I found

  361. this article in the Saddleback News, a copy that said,

  362. we welcomed 42 new members, this is in 2008, 1980

  363. at the very first 101 class including Don Dale who

  364. was the first member of Saddleback Church and you've heard

  365. the famous story of how we met and he got

  366. home for us and then has been here for all

  367. 40 years and the 12 weeks before that and then

  368. Lee and Cynthia Hensler Cynthia Hensler and Lee were the

  369. first two people baptized in Saddleback Church and she was

  370. the first person who called You remember that? Yes. Tell

  371. me about that, because we hand-addressed and hand-stamped 15,000 letters.

  372. Don was involved, obviously, in that.

  373. Well, we wanted to find a church, not for us,

  374. but we had a brand new baby.

  375. A new baby, didn't you?

  376. Yeah.

  377. We thought part of.

  378. The formula for being good parents would take the child

  379. to church.

  380. By the way, Courtney was the first diaper change at

  381. Saddleback Church.

  382. And she also bit your daughter.

  383. She did bit my daughter, who was just a couple

  384. months older. Very first bit, yes.

  385. Blood sisters.

  386. Yes.

  387. But we decided we wanted to find a church so

  388. we could be those good parents.

  389. Yeah.

  390. And the letter arrived.

  391. Yeah.

  392. And didn't give us too much information other than where

  393. it met and what time.

  394. Right.

  395. So I just had a few other questions I needed

  396. to ask.

  397. So you called. And I kept a record. I still

  398. have this record of everybody who called from that letter.

  399. And the first one was Cynthia Hensler.

  400. Cindy.

  401. Cindy at the time, exactly, that's true. That's true. And

  402. I was trying to go by Richard, but it didn't work, so.

  403. I was trying to look older than I really was.

  404. And Don was actually the old man at the time,

  405. so anyway. Don and Lee and Cynthia, I want to

  406. just talk about, well, first, everybody's going to want to know,

  407. what's it like to have been through 40 years of

  408. Saddleback Church? Absolutely amazing. And I did go to the

  409. very first service. You did.

  410. And I listened to you read that first letter of

  411. what your vision was for this church.

  412. Yeah, yeah. That is just really a wild thing. I

  413. just wondered if I could really do it. I did too.

  414. I wasn't even a Christian at the time. I just

  415. had nothing to do on Easter Sunday.

  416. So I went to the church that was meeting in

  417. the school I taught at. Yeah, that's true. You taught

  418. it at Laguna Hills High School. That's right.

  419. And so I did it in there with no expectation.

  420. My real reason was I was going to go and

  421. see what it was like so I could tell her, oh,

  422. let's not bother. when she came back. But I heard

  423. something entirely different that I've never heard before about that

  424. relationship with Jesus Christ.

  425. I've never heard that before.

  426. We had no idea what was in store for us.

  427. Don, talk about all of the prep that we did

  428. getting ready for that first service.

  429. What was it, 15,000 letters?

  430. 15,000 letters, yeah.

  431. Rick did not want them computer generated.

  432. Hand addressed them.

  433. I think we licked stamps.

  434. We stamped them, hand stamped them.

  435. And licked the envelope closed and figured out some sort

  436. of method.

  437. We all had this thick mucus on our licks.

  438. It basically just said, we got good news for you.

  439. Visit us. You got it. That's it. That's exactly right.

  440. We've got good news. That's how we started. And I'll

  441. never forget at the first service when 205 people walked

  442. up that walkway to Laguna Hills High School and Kay

  443. looked at me with tears in her eyes and she goes,

  444. this is going to work. That was Easter Sunday.

  445. Remember we did a service a week ahead?

  446. That's true. It's exactly what would happen. Exactly. And we

  447. had 60 people at that.

  448. And my dad's a minister.

  449. I called my dad and I said... 60.

  450. People showed up. On the trial run service.

  451. On the trial run, and my dad goes, 60? We

  452. only got 100 in our church. You got 60 for

  453. the first service?

  454. Yeah, right.

  455. What's going on?

  456. Exactly.

  457. My dad was amazed.

  458. I was amazed. I thought, wow, maybe this.

  459. There is something.

  460. Yeah, five people gave their lives to Christ in the

  461. trial run service. And some of their names, Carl and

  462. Linda Bolt were two of the ones who gave their

  463. lives to Christ. Gary and Pat Streed. I remember they

  464. wrote on a card, they said, Rick, help us. And

  465. I thought they were having just typical problems, marriage problems

  466. or something. I called them up and said, how can

  467. I help you? They said, oh, we just want to

  468. know how to give our lives to Christ. And that

  469. was it.

  470. That's how it started. So we've seen a lot. We

  471. had to set up the nursery. We had to figure

  472. out what we're going to do with the kids. What

  473. are we going to do with the youth? Who's going

  474. to play the music?

  475. If you were a warm body, you could be a

  476. youth worker.

  477. Breeders and all this stuff.

  478. We take it for granted today.

  479. We're only.

  480. 10 or 15 of us to do all this.

  481. This is an interesting point that Don's making, that before

  482. the first service, this little Bible study grew to about

  483. 15 people. And many of them had not given their

  484. lives to Christ. They were non-believers. I actually had non-believers

  485. helping us plan the service. And I said, you know,

  486. Bob Jacoby, I said, you're going to be the usher.

  487. And Terry, you're going to plan this. And we had

  488. non-Christians helping us plan a church service for non-Christians.

  489. Rick?

  490. Yeah.

  491. Within the first month of the church, we asked Lee

  492. and I to... do one of the Bible studies after

  493. the service.

  494. You're it.

  495. We didn't do that until about the sixth or seventh.

  496. I remember that, exactly, yeah. Oh, you're a teacher, you

  497. could be a Bible study leader. You could be a

  498. Bible study leader, exactly. We later did that in prison

  499. where we pointed to people and said, point around, will

  500. we choose Bubba to be our Bible study leader? Bubba goes,

  501. I'm not a Christian. No, but you're a leader, so

  502. you can ask the questions. So it was the whole

  503. idea that we want to... convince people is it was

  504. all hands on deck. There were literally no spectators. Once

  505. you start coming week number two, you're a participator. You know?

  506. I probably talked on the phone a couple times a day.

  507. A day. Daily at least. Exactly. Exactly.

  508. Let's keep working.

  509. Exactly.

  510. That was how the church functioned.

  511. No, that's exactly right, Don. Okay. Now, there are 67

  512. different metaphors in the Bible. The metaphors are names of

  513. the church. What I want to do in the last

  514. few minutes here is talk to you about five of

  515. them and show you the benefits. What are the benefits

  516. of belonging? So the Bible calls the church many different things,

  517. but let's just look at five. Would you write these down?

  518. The first metaphor is the most well-known one, which is

  519. the church is a family. Okay, it's a family. And

  520. there are many, many implications for that, but The one

  521. thing I want to focus on is that in a

  522. healthy family, you learn who you are. So write this down.

  523. Number one, in God's family, I learn my true identity.

  524. That's the first benefit of actually being a member of

  525. a local church. church. In God's family, I learn my

  526. true identity. Have you ever thought about why people wear brands?

  527. You know, they'll say Ralph Lauren or Ruka or Vans

  528. or Tommy Hilfiger or whatever. Why do people wear brands?

  529. To identify. To feel like they belong to something. They like,

  530. they think that this is a cool brand. If I

  531. wear this brand, then I'm cool. And so we identify

  532. with brands because it helps us identify. But in reality,

  533. your primary identity doesn't come from what you wear. Your

  534. primary identity comes from relationships. I am a son, I

  535. am a brother,

  536. These are all relationships in my life that define

  537. who Rick Warren is. It's not how I look, it's

  538. not how little or much money I've got, it's what

  539. are my relationships. You're defined by relationships. If my connections

  540. are bad, or my connections are broken, then my identity suffers.

  541. If I just got fired, or I just got divorced,

  542. or my spouse dies, if something changes in my relationships,

  543. it causes me to pause and go, who am I?

  544. Who am I? Because your primary identity comes from your relationships. Now,

  545. I know what some of you think. You say, Rick,

  546. that's terrible news for me because my family was dysfunctional,

  547. my family was broken, or maybe my family was nonexistent. Well,

  548. I got good news for you. The next verse on

  549. your outline, Ephesians 2.19. You are a member of, there's

  550. that word member, you are a member of God's very

  551. own family and you belong in God's household with every

  552. other Christian. This is your family. This, you belong here,

  553. you fit here. Now actually, hear me out on this.

  554. Your spiritual family is far more important even than your

  555. physical family. God used your physical family to bring you

  556. into the world so you could become a part of

  557. his spiritual family. You should be grateful that your physical

  558. family got together, whatever the circumstances are, doesn't matter, God

  559. wanted you alive because he wanted you to be a

  560. part of his spiritual family. Why is my spiritual family,

  561. the church, more important than my physical family? Because your

  562. physical family doesn't last. People die, people grow old, people

  563. move away, people divorce, there's all kinds of different things,

  564. it doesn't last. But God's family is gonna last forever

  565. and ever and ever. Our relationship, I have people in

  566. my family I never met, great grandparents and other relatives

  567. that I've never met. My dad was number 18 of

  568. 20 kids. Yeah, can you imagine that? I'd have to

  569. rent the Superdome if I had a family reunion. I've

  570. never met most of those relatives. But if they know

  571. the Lord, they're in God's family, we're gonna be in

  572. heaven together. And your spiritual family is gonna be permanent.

  573. It's going on for thousands and thousands and thousands and

  574. thousands of years. God used your physical family to get

  575. you into the world. You ought to be grateful for that.

  576. But his real goal is to get you into his

  577. spiritual family. You're a member of God's very only family.

  578. The world uses superficial identifiers. You have brown hair, you

  579. weigh such and such, your height is this, you're Asian

  580. or you're Caucasian or you're African American or you're educated

  581. or you're rich or you're whatever. Those are all superficial

  582. identifiers for you. People today, when they don't know their

  583. identity in Christ, they look for identity in something else,

  584. like a political party. Well, I'm of this, or I'm

  585. of that. And they find their identity in the team

  586. that they root for, or they find their identity in

  587. the celebrity that they identify with, or they find their

  588. identity in the political person they think's gonna be the

  589. savior of the world. But none of that. It matters,

  590. it's superficial. What matters most is your spiritual identity. Look

  591. on the screen, Hebrews 2.11. Jesus and the people he

  592. makes holy all belong to the same family. That's a connection.

  593. You're in the family of God. That's why he isn't

  594. ashamed to call them his brothers and sisters. Now you

  595. may have had some relatives you were ashamed of, but

  596. God Jesus says, I'm not ashamed of you, I'm your brother,

  597. I'm your elder brother in the family of God. By

  598. belonging to Christ, you discover your true identity. Now you know,

  599. I used to work up in inner city LA as

  600. a youth pastor many, many years ago. And gangs would

  601. get gang tattoos so they could identify who they belonged to, okay?

  602. What's the tattoo of a Christian? Baptism. Baptism says, I'm in,

  603. I'm in. I'm not ashamed to say to the world,

  604. Jesus Christ is my Savior and my Lord. Now that's

  605. the first metaphor, it's family. Let's go quickly to these others.

  606. Second metaphor, the Bible says the church is a temple.

  607. It's a temple. It's like a building erected to hold

  608. the presence of God. And God says his presence wants

  609. to be in you. You're a temple and together we

  610. form the temple of God. Look here on the screen.

  611. First Corinthians 3.16 says this. Don't you realize that all

  612. of you together, together are the temple of God and

  613. his spirit lives in you. I'm not the temple of

  614. God just by myself. You're not the temple of God

  615. just by yourself. Together we are the temple of God.

  616. That's a metaphor. for God's family, for God's church. And

  617. like a strong structure of a building, we each hold

  618. each other up. Okay, this is an important thing. We

  619. each hold each other up. You know, I remember when

  620. we were building all these buildings on the Lake Forest

  621. campus and how fascinating it was that it took thousands

  622. and thousands and thousands of parts to erect the building.

  623. But the most important thing in a building is that

  624. the parts have to fit together. If they don't fit together,

  625. the parts are worthless. A beam that is a quarter

  626. of an inch too short is worthless. A pipe that

  627. is a foot too long is worthless. The parts have

  628. to fit together or they lose their meaning and purpose.

  629. And to be strong and to be stable, everything has

  630. to connect. And that's what the metaphor of the church

  631. as a temple is all about. Also I noticed when

  632. I would walk around in some of these buildings that

  633. were being built before they were erected is that there

  634. was a lot of spare stuff laying around on the ground.

  635. There were parts and wood and tools and all kinds

  636. of things that were not used. And what I noticed

  637. about that is that a piece of pipe could be

  638. laying on the ground. It could be in the building, okay,

  639. it could be in the building, but it was not

  640. a part of the building. You understand what I'm saying?

  641. Just laying on the ground. It's in the building, but

  642. it's not a part of the building. Some of you

  643. are in the church. You come every week to service,

  644. but you're not a part of it, because you're not

  645. connected yet. You haven't made the commitment of membership. You're

  646. in it, you're like, you're in it, but you're not

  647. a part of it, because you're not connected to anybody. Yet,

  648. many times, why did God use this metaphor of a

  649. building to illustrate the church? Because in a building, the

  650. connected parts hold each other together. And there are gonna

  651. be many times in your life when you need other

  652. people to hold you together. You're gonna need other people

  653. in your life to hold you together. As the pastor

  654. of this church, there have been many, many times over

  655. 40 years, I needed the members of this church to

  656. hold me together. Because I'm just a person like you.

  657. And I needed people to hold me together when things

  658. are falling apart in my life. If you don't have that,

  659. you're lacking what the church offers. So, write this down.

  660. Number two, in God's temple, I'm supported by others. Like

  661. a strong structure of a building, we hold each other up.

  662. This is what the whole book of Ephesians teaches. Chapter two,

  663. in God's temple, I'm supported by others. Ephesians chapter two

  664. says this, verse 21 and 22. In Christ, the whole

  665. building is joined together and it rises to become a

  666. holy temple to the Lord. He's talking about the church.

  667. And in him you too are being built together to

  668. become a dwelling place in which God lives by his spirit.

  669. By his spirit. Here's the point. In a building, a

  670. disconnected frame has no support and has no stability. And

  671. it's gonna collapse on its own. And if you're not connected,

  672. there will be times in your life when you collapse

  673. because you have no stability and you have no support.

  674. You're just out there on your own. You weren't meant

  675. to go through life all by yourself. You weren't meant

  676. to go through it all on your own. You need

  677. physical and spiritual and emotional and mental support. You need

  678. to belong. Few years back I got, because of my grandkids,

  679. got involved in Legos. It had been a long time

  680. since I'd played with Legos. But we turned my entire

  681. garage into Legoland. And we were building Fantasy World and

  682. Cowboys and Indians and Star Wars and Jurassic Park and

  683. on and on and on. You know what I discovered

  684. about Legos? Legos are created for connection. They have no

  685. purpose if they're not connected. When you connect them, you

  686. can really build some cool stuff. But if they're not

  687. connected to anything else, they're just a pile of plastic.

  688. They get in the way. And you step on them,

  689. it hurts your bare foot. Anybody ever stepped on a Lego?

  690. God bless you, is there another? God bless you, I

  691. see you. Thousands of you have stepped on Legos, thank you.

  692. God bless you. But when you connect them, you can

  693. create something cool. Here's what the Bible says, Romans 1,

    Romans 1:12

  694. verse 12. I want us to help each other with

  695. the faith that we have, okay? Your faith will help me,

  696. and my faith will help you. That's why we have church.

  697. Your faith will help me, and my faith will help you. Now,

  698. in class 101, we have actually a membership covenant, and

  699. everybody signs that covenant. And it is a promise, not

  700. simply to God, but to each other, saying, I will help.

  701. Love the other members of this church. And I will

  702. help the other members of the church. You know, the

  703. church is the antidote to the greatest epidemic in the

  704. world right now, loneliness. People are lonely all around the world.

  705. It is epidemic proportion. You know, some of you are students,

  706. you're in school. I just wanna say this to you

  707. because school can be a lonely time This church here

  708. is very far from perfect, but it's filled with people

  709. who will love you if you'll get to know them,

  710. and they will help you navigate the crazy years in

  711. your life. They will help you. Now let's go to

  712. the third metaphor. The third metaphor that we see in

  713. the Bible is the church is a body. The church

  714. is a body. It's called the body of Christ. Up

  715. here on the screen, 1 Corinthians 12 says, together you

  716. are the body of Christ. and each one of you

  717. is a part of it. So the church is a family,

  718. the church is a temple, the church is a body. Now,

  719. what's the benefit of being a part of the body

  720. of Christ? Romans chapter 12, there on your outline, verse

    Romans 12 chapter mention

  721. four and five. Just as there are many parts to

  722. our bodies, so it is with Christ's body. We're all

  723. parts of it and it takes everyone to make it complete.

  724. For we each have different work to do, so we

  725. belong to each other and each of us needs All

  726. the other parts. I could have preached the entire sermon

  727. just on this. It says we're all many parts. We're

  728. all unique. Look around. Nobody's like you in our church family.

  729. Everybody's unique. We're all unique. Everybody's needed to make the

  730. body complete. We each have different work to do. We

  731. belong to each other and we need each other. Church

  732. is far more than simply something you attend. It's a

  733. family you belong to. And you need other people. You

  734. need connections in your life. First Corinthians chapter 12, verse 15.

    1 Corinthians 12:15

  735. If the foot says, I'm not part of the body

  736. because I'm not a hand, that doesn't make it any

  737. less part of the body. And if an ear says,

  738. I'm not part of the body because I'm only an

  739. ear and not an eye, would that make it any

  740. less part of the body? Too often, the church is

  741. just a big mouth. And we've amputated the arms and

  742. the feet. And we're known for what we say, we

  743. know for what we're against. I'm tired of that. I

  744. want our church to be known for what we're for,

  745. not what we're against. Okay? I want us to be

  746. known for what we're for, not what we're against. Again,

  747. what good is an eyeball detached from a body? It

  748. can't see anything. I want you to write this on

  749. your outline. I can't fulfill my purpose by myself. That's

  750. one of the fundamental lessons you have to learn in life.

  751. I cannot fulfill my purpose, by myself. You know, I

  752. asked Don, Dale, and Lee and Cynthia Hensler about their

  753. being involved in ministries over the years, because they've all

  754. been involved in dozens of them. And this is what

  755. they had to say. I want you to watch this.

  756. I've got a real treat for you today. My oldest

  757. friends at Saddleback Church are sitting on this couch and

  758. they're really old. We're gonna talk about what membership means.

  759. These are people from the very first membership class. I

  760. found this article in the Saddleback News, a copy that

  761. said we welcomed 42 new members, this is in 1980,

  762. at the very first 101 class, including Don Dale, who

  763. was the first member of Saddleback Church, And you've heard

  764. the famous story of how we met and he got

  765. a home for us and then has been here for

  766. all 40 years and the 12 weeks before that. And

  767. then Lee and Cynthia Hensler, Cynthia Hensler and Lee were

  768. the first two people baptized in Saddleback Church. And she

  769. was the first person who called. You remember that? Tell

  770. me about that because we hand addressed and hand stamped 15,000 letters.

  771. Don was involved obviously in that.

  772. Well, we wanted to find a church, not for us,

  773. but we had a brand new baby.

  774. A new baby, didn't you?

  775. Yeah.

  776. We thought part of the formula for being good parents

  777. would take child to church.

  778. By the way, Courtney was the first diaper changed at

  779. Saddleback Church.

  780. And she also bit your daughter.

  781. She did bit my daughter, who was just a couple

  782. months older.

  783. Blood sisters.

  784. Yes.

  785. But we decided we wanted to find a church so

  786. we could be those good parents.

  787. Yeah.

  788. And, uh, the letter arrived and, um.

  789. Uh, didn't give us too much information other than where

  790. it met and what time. So I just had a

  791. few other questions I needed to ask.

  792. So you called, and I kept a record, I still

  793. have this record of everybody who called from that letter.

  794. And the first one was Cynthia Hensler.

  795. Cindy.

  796. Cindy at the time, exactly, that's true. And I was

  797. trying to go by Richard, but it didn't work. I

  798. was trying to look older than I really was. And

  799. Don was actually the old man at the time, so anyway.

  800. Don and Lee and Cynthia, I want to just talk about, well, first,

  801. everybody's going to want to know, what's it like to

  802. have been through 40 years of Saddleback Church? Absolutely amazing.

  803. And I did go to the very first service. You did.

  804. And I listened to you read that first letter of what.

  805. Your vision was for this church. Yeah.

  806. That is just really a wild thing. I just wondered

  807. if I could really do it. I did too.

  808. I wasn't even a Christian at the time. I just

  809. had nothing to do on Easter Sunday. So I went

  810. to the church that was meeting in the school I

  811. taught at.

  812. Yeah, that's true. You taught it at Laguna Hills High School.

  813. That's right.

  814. And so I did it in there with no expectation.

  815. My real reason was I was going to go and

  816. see what it was like so I could tell her, oh,

  817. let's not bother.

  818. Yeah. when she came back. But I heard something entirely

  819. different than I've ever heard before.

  820. About that relationship with Jesus Christ. I've never heard that before.

  821. We had no idea what was in store for us.

  822. Don, talk about all of the prep that we did

  823. getting ready for that first service.

  824. What was it, 15,000 letters?

  825. 15,000 letters, yeah.

  826. Rick did not want them computer generated.

  827. No. Hand addressed them.

  828. I think we licked stamps.

  829. We stamped them, hand stamped them.

  830. And licked the envelope closed.

  831. Yes.

  832. Figured out some sort of method.

  833. We all had this thick mucus on our licks. Licks

  834. were stuck together. Yeah.

  835. It basically just said, we got good news for you.

  836. Visit us. You got it. That's it. That's exactly right.

  837. We've got good news. That's how we started. And I'll

  838. never forget at the first service when 205 people walked

  839. up that. walkway to Laguna Hills High School and Kay

  840. looked at me with tears in her eyes and she goes,

  841. this is gonna work. That was Easter Sunday.

  842. Remember we did a service a week ahead of that.

  843. That's true. We kind of practiced because we didn't know

  844. what would happen. Exactly. And we had 60 people at that.

  845. And my dad's a minister.

  846. I called my dad and I said, 60.

  847. People showed up. On the trial run service.

  848. On the trial run, and my dad goes, 60?

  849. We've only got 100 in our church, and you've got

  850. 60 for the first service?

  851. Yeah, right.

  852. What's going on?

  853. Exactly.

  854. My dad was amazed.

  855. I was amazed.

  856. Wow maybe this there is something.

  857. Yeah five people gave their lives christ in the trial

  858. run service and some of their names carl and linda

  859. bolt were two of the ones who gave the life

  860. of gary and pat street i remember they wrote on

  861. a card they said Rick, help us. And I thought

  862. they were having, you know, just typical problems, marriage problems

  863. or something. I called them up and said, how can

  864. I help you? They said, oh, we just want to

  865. know how to give our lives to Christ. And that

  866. was it. That's how it started. So we've seen a lot.

  867. We had to set up the nursery. We had to

  868. figure out what we're going to do with the kids.

  869. What are we going to do with the youth? Who's

  870. going to play the music?

  871. If you were a warm body, you could be a

  872. youth worker.

  873. Breeders and all this stuff.

  874. We take it for granted today.

  875. 10 or 15 of us to do all this.

  876. This is an interesting point that Don's making, that before

  877. the first service, this little Bible study grew to about

  878. 15 people. And many of them had not given their

  879. lives to Christ. They were non-believers. I actually had non-believers

  880. helping us plan the service. And I said, you know,

  881. Bob Jacoby, I said, you're going to be the usher.

  882. And Terry, you're going to plan this. And we had

  883. non-Christians helping us plan a church service for non-Christians.

  884. Rich.

  885. Yeah.

  886. Within the first month of the church, we asked Lee

  887. and I do one of the Bible studies after the service.

  888. You're it.

  889. We don't do that until about the sixth or seventh.

  890. I remember that, exactly, yeah. Oh, you're a teacher, you

  891. could be a Bible study leader. You could be a

  892. Bible study leader, exactly. We later did that in prison

  893. where we pointed to people and said, point around, will

  894. we choose Bubba to be our Bible study leader? Bubba goes,

  895. I'm not a Christian. No, but you're a leader, so

  896. you can ask the questions. So it was the whole

  897. idea that we wanted to convince people is it was

  898. all hands on deck. There were literally no spectators. Once

  899. you start coming, week number two, you're a participator. You know?

  900. You and I probably talked on the phone a couple

  901. times a day.

  902. A day. Daily at least. Exactly. Exactly.

  903. Let's keep working.

  904. Exactly.

  905. That was how the church functioned.

  906. No, that's exactly right, Don. Okay. Now, there are 67

  907. different metaphors in the Bible, and the metaphors are names

  908. of the church. What I want to do in the

  909. last few minutes here is talk to you about five

  910. of them and show you the benefits. What are the

  911. benefits of belonging? So the Bible calls the church many

  912. different things, but let's just look at five. Would you

  913. write these down? The first metaphor is the most well-known one,

  914. which is the church is a family. Okay, it's a family.

  915. And there are many, many implications for that, but The

  916. one thing I want to focus on is that in

  917. a healthy family, you learn who you are. So write

  918. this down. Number one, in God's family, I learn my

  919. true identity. That's the first benefit of actually being a

  920. member of a local church. In God's family, I learn

  921. my true identity. Have you ever thought about why people

  922. wear brands? You know, they'll say Ralph Lauren or Ruka

  923. or Vans or Tommy Hilfiger or whatever. Why do people

  924. wear brands? To identify. To feel like they belong to something.

  925. They like to think that this is a cool brand,

  926. if I wear this brand then I'm cool. And so

  927. we identify with brands because it helps us identify. But

  928. in reality, your primary identity doesn't come from what you wear.

  929. Your primary identity comes from relationships. I am a son,

  930. I am a brother,

  931. These are all relationships in my life that

  932. define who Rick Warren is. It's not how I look,

  933. it's not how little or much money I've got, it's

  934. what are my relationships. You're defined by relationships. If my

  935. connections are bad, or my connections are broken, then my

  936. identity suffers. If I just got fired, or I just

  937. got divorced, or my spouse dies, if something changes in

  938. my relationships, it causes me to pause and go, who

  939. am I? Who am I? Because your primary identity comes

  940. from your relationships. Now, I know what some of you think.

  941. You say, Rick, that's terrible news for me because my

  942. family was dysfunctional, my family was broken, or maybe my

  943. family was nonexistent. Well, I got good news for you.

  944. The next verse on your outline, Ephesians 2.19. You are

  945. a member of, there's that word member, you are a

  946. member of God's very own family and you belong in

  947. God's household with every other Christian. This is your family. This,

  948. you belong here, you fit here. Now actually, hear me

  949. out on this. Your spiritual family is far more important

  950. even than your physical family. God used your physical family

  951. to bring you into the world so you could become

  952. a part of his spiritual family. You should be grateful

  953. that your physical family got together, whatever the circumstances are,

  954. doesn't matter, God wanted you alive because he wanted you

  955. to be a part of his spiritual family. Why is

  956. my spiritual family, the church, more important than my physical family?

  957. Because your physical family doesn't last. People die, people grow old,

  958. people move away, people divorce, there's all kinds of different things,

  959. it doesn't last. But God's family is gonna last forever

  960. and ever and ever. Our relationship, I have people in

  961. my family I never met, great grandparents and other relatives

  962. that I've never met. My dad was number 18 of

  963. 20 kids. Yeah, can you imagine that? I'd have to

  964. rent the Superdome if I had a family reunion. I've

  965. never met most of those relatives. But if they know

  966. the Lord, they're in God's family, we're gonna be in

  967. heaven together. And your spiritual family is gonna be permanent.

  968. It's going on for thousands and thousands and thousands and

  969. thousands of years. God used your physical family to get

  970. you into the world. You ought to be grateful for that.

  971. But his real goal is to get you into his

  972. spiritual family. You're a member of God's very only family.

  973. And the world uses superficial identifiers. You have brown hair,

  974. you weigh such and such, your height is this, you're

  975. Asian or you're Caucasian or you're African American or you're

  976. educated or you're rich or you're whatever. Those are all

  977. superficial identifiers for you. people today, when they don't know

  978. their identity in Christ, they look for identity in something else,

  979. like a political party. Well, I'm a this, or I'm

  980. a that. And they find their identity in the team

  981. that they root for, or they find their identity in

  982. the celebrity that they identify with, or they find their

  983. identity in the political person they think's gonna be the

  984. savior of the world. But none of that. It matters,

  985. it's superficial. What matters most is your spiritual identity. Look

  986. on the screen, Hebrews 2.11. Jesus and the people he

  987. makes holy all belong to the same family. That's a connection.

  988. You're in the family of God. That's why he isn't

  989. ashamed to call them his brothers and sisters. Now you

  990. may have had some relatives you were ashamed of. But

  991. God Jesus says, I'm not ashamed of you, I'm your brother,

  992. I'm your elder brother in the family of God. By

  993. belonging to Christ, you discover your true identity. Now you know,

  994. I used to work up in inner city LA as

  995. a youth pastor many, many years ago. And gangs would

  996. get gang tattoos so they could identify who they belong to, okay?

  997. What's the tattoo of a Christian? Baptism. Baptism says, I'm in,

  998. I'm in. I'm not ashamed to say to the world,

  999. Jesus Christ is my Savior and my Lord. Now that's

1000. the first metaphor, it's family. Let's go quickly to these others.

1001. Second metaphor, the Bible says the church is a temple.

  1002. It's a temple. It's like a building erected to hold

1003. the presence of God. And God says his presence wants

1004. to be in you. You're a temple and together we

1005. form the temple of God. Look here on the screen.

1006. First Corinthians 3.16 says this. Don't you realize that all

1007. of you together, together are the temple of God and

1008. his spirit lives in you. I'm not the temple of

1009. God just by myself. You're not the temple of God

1010. just by yourself. Together we are the temple of God.

  1011. That's a metaphor. for God's family, for God's church. And

1012. like a strong structure of a building, we each hold

1013. each other up. Okay, this is an important thing. We

1014. each hold each other up. You know, I remember when

1015. we were building all these buildings on the Lake Forest

1016. campus and how fascinating it was that it took thousands

1017. and thousands and thousands of parts to erect the building.

1018. But the most important thing in a building is that

1019. the parts have to fit together. If they don't fit together,

1020. the parts are worthless. A beam that is a quarter

1021. of an inch too short is worthless. A pipe that

1022. is a foot too long is worthless. The parts have

1023. to fit together or they lose their meaning and purpose.

1024. And to be strong and to be stable, everything has

1025. to connect. And that's what the metaphor of the church

1026. as a temple is all about. Also I noticed when

1027. I would walk around in some of these buildings that

1028. were being built before they were erected is that there

1029. was a lot of spare stuff laying around on the ground.

1030. There were parts and wood and tools and all kinds

1031. of things that were not used. And what I noticed

1032. about that is that a piece of pipe could be

1033. laying on the ground. It could be in the building, okay,

1034. it could be in the building, but it was not

1035. a part of the building. You understand what I'm saying?

1036. Just laying on the ground. It's in the building, but

1037. it's not a part of the building. Some of you

1038. are in the church. You come every week to service,

1039. but you're not a part of it, because you're not

1040. connected yet. You haven't made the commitment of membership. You're

1041. in it, you're like, you're in it, but you're not

1042. a part of it, because you're not connected to anybody. Yet,

1043. many times, why did God use this metaphor of a

1044. building to illustrate the church? Because in a building, the

1045. connected parts hold each other together. And there are gonna

1046. be many times in your life when you need other

1047. people to hold you together. You're gonna need other people

1048. in your life to hold you together. As the pastor

1049. of this church, there have been many, many times over

1050. 40 years, I needed the members of this church to

1051. hold me together. Because I'm just a person like you.

1052. And I needed people to hold me together when things

1053. are falling apart in my life. If you don't have that,

1054. you're lacking what the church offers. So, write this down,

1055. number two. In God's temple, I'm supported by others. Like

1056. a strong structure of a building, we hold each other up.

1057. This is what the whole book of Ephesians teaches. Chapter two,

1058. in God's temple, I'm supported by others. Ephesians chapter two

1059. says this, verse 21 and 22. In Christ, the whole

1060. building is joined together and it rises to become a

1061. holy temple to the Lord. He's talking about the church.

1062. And in him, you too are being built together. to

1063. become a dwelling place in which God lives by his spirit,

1064. by his spirit. Here's the point. In a building, a

1065. disconnected frame has no support and has no stability, and

1066. it's gonna collapse on its own. And if you're not connected,

1067. there will be times in your life when you collapse

1068. because you have no stability and you have no support.

1069. You're just out there on your own. You weren't meant

1070. to go through life all by yourself. You weren't meant

1071. to go through it all on your own. You need

1072. physical and spiritual and emotional and mental support. You need

1073. to belong. Few years back, I got, because of my grandkids,

1074. got involved in Legos. It had been a long time

1075. since I'd played with Legos. But we turned my entire

1076. garage into Legoland. And we were building, you know, Fantasy

1077. World Cowboys and Indians and Star Wars and Jurassic Park

1078. and on and on and on. You know what I

1079. discovered about Legos? Legos are created for connection. They have

1080. no purpose if they're not connected. When you connect them,

1081. you can really build some cool stuff. But if they're

1082. not connected to anything else, they're just a pile of plastic.

1083. They get in the way, and you step on them,

1084. it hurts your bare foot. Anybody ever stepped on a Lego?

1085. God bless you, is there another? God bless you, I

1086. see you. Thousands of you have stepped on Legos, thank you,

1087. God bless you. But when you connect them, you can

1088. create something cool. Here's what the Bible says, Romans chapter one,

1089. verse 12. I want us to help each other with

1090. the faith that we have, okay? Your faith will help me.

1091. And my faith will help you. That's why we have church.

1092. Your faith will help me and my faith will help you.

1093. Now in class 101, we have actually a membership covenant.

1094. And everybody signs that covenant. And it is a promise,

1095. not simply to God, but to each other saying, I

1096. will love the other members of this church. And I

1097. will help the other members in the church. You know,

1098. the church is the antidote to the greatest epidemic in

1099. the world right now. People are lonely all around the world.

1100. It is epidemic proportion. You know, some of you are students.

1101. You're in school. I just want to say this to

1102. you because school can be a lonely time. This church

1103. here is very far from perfect, but it's filled with

1104. people who will love you if you'll get to know them.

1105. and they will help you navigate the crazy years in

1106. your life. They will help you. Now let's go to

1107. the third metaphor. The third metaphor that we see in

1108. the Bible is the church is a body. The church

1109. is a body. It's called the body of Christ. Up

1110. here on the screen, 1 Corinthians 12 says, together you

1111. are the body of Christ. And each one of you

1112. is a part of it. So the church is a family,

1113. the church is a temple, the church is a body.

1114. What's the benefit of being a part of the body

1115. of Christ? Romans chapter 12, there on your outline, verse

    Romans 12 chapter mention

1116. four and five. Just as there are many parts to

1117. our bodies, so it is with Christ's body. We're all

1118. parts of it and it takes everyone to make it complete.

1119. For we each have different work to do, so we

1120. belong to each other and each of us needs all

1121. the other parts. I could have preached the entire sermon

1122. just on this. It says we're all many parts, we're

1123. all unique. Look around, nobody's like you. In our church family,

1124. everybody's unique. We're all unique. Everybody's needed to make the

1125. body complete. We each have different work to do. We

1126. belong to each other and we need each other. Church

1127. is far more than simply something you attend. It's a

1128. family you belong to. And you need other people. You

1129. need connections in your life. First Corinthians chapter 12, verse 15.

    1 Corinthians 12:15

1130. If the foot says, I'm not a part of the

1131. body because I'm not a hand. That doesn't make it

1132. any less part of the body. And if an ear says,

1133. I'm not part of the body, because I'm only an

1134. ear and not an eye, would that make it any

1135. less part of the body? Too often, the church is

1136. just a big mouth. And we've amputated the arms and

1137. the feet. And we're known for what we say, we

1138. know for what we're against. I'm tired of that. I

1139. want our church to be known for what we're for,

1140. not what we're against. Okay? I want us to be

1141. known for what we're for, not what we're against. Again,

1142. what good is an eyeball detached from a body? It

1143. can't see anything. I want you to write this on

1144. your outline. I can't fulfill my purpose by myself. That's

1145. one of the fundamental lessons you have to learn in life.

1146. I cannot fulfill my purpose by myself. You know, I

1147. asked Don Dale and Lee and Cynthia Hensler about They're

1148. being involved in ministries over the years because they've all

1149. been involved in dozens of them. And this is what

1150. they had to say. I want you to watch this.

1151. Now every one of you, all three of you guys,

1152. have started multiple ministries in this church, which we now

1153. have over 500 of these different ministries. These guys started

1154. many of them, grew them up, and then turned them

1155. over to somebody else, and then would go and start another.

1156. Can you guys think, each of you think of a time,

1157. one of the many ministries that was really interesting or

1158. fulfilling to you in service? Something you just go, well,

1159. I didn't know that I could do that, but I did, whatever.

1160. Well, my, in my particular case was the idea of

1161. going someplace and doing something with some of the skills

  1162. I had.

  1163. Right.

1164. At the time I had, uh, I think I was

1165. still teaching woodshop at the Moon Hills high school and

1166. I wanted to do something with those skills. I knew

1167. your dad had gone and had built mission trips, building stuff. So, uh,

1168. the idea of a mission trip sounded intriguing. So I,

1169. and my, and I guess there were five others, Bob Snook,

1170. Andy Hine, uh, and, uh, Jennifer Stice.

  1171. And Bonnie Stice.

1172. Bonnie Stice. And, um, um, he was supposed to go,

1173. but he got sick. We joined with what is now Mariners,

1174. and we went to Costa Rica.

1175. Wow. The very first mission trip that settled. Wow, that

1176. we ever did. And it was a great experience and fun.

1177. So then when he came back, I still wanted to

1178. do more things like that, but knew I couldn't keep

1179. going on trips. So I got the church involved in

  1180. Habitat for Humanity. Right.

  1181. I remember. A long time ago.

1182. And so we started teams out and doing Habitat for Humanity,

1183. and that is drone and some other people taking it over.

1184. And then because of your dad, again, he taught me

1185. how to go into Africa.

  1186. Yeah.

1187. And I've been all over the world, of course. Yeah.

  1188. Mission trips. Yeah.

1189. So that's kind of how I got involved and I

1190. lead trips and recruit guys to go with me.

1191. But it was kind of like take that first step. Oh, absolutely. Yeah.

1192. Take the first step and then who knows where it's

  1193. going to go. Don?

1194. I took over the youth ministry.

  1195. We had ministry.

  1196. Right.

1197. It had something to do with junior high and high school.

  1198. Right.

1199. I ran the youth group for quite a while.

1200. Yeah, you did. I did. Now, I'm back now.

1201. If you have a child in junior high, come see me.

1202. They need to be involved in junior high.

1203. But I now see kids that are in their 40s.

1204. They were at my youth group.

1205. Yeah, that's interesting. All three of you have seen people

1206. that you mentored who, you actually watched them be born.

1207. You watched them be born, you watched them grow up

1208. through all of the crawlers and toddlers and stuff like that.

1209. And now, for instance, we have people on our staff

1210. that were born in this church, including Courtney. Yeah, who

1211. started when the church started and all of that. I'll

1212. never forget when Courtney came back from Stony Brook as

1213. the first character award in that school. Stony Brook School started.

  1214. Timothy Award.

1215. The Timothy Award, that's what it was. And all of that.

1216. Well, with me, I started doing the children's ministry, writing

1217. up the weekly curriculum. Yeah.

1218. And preparing the teachers and volunteers.

1219. But then Kay asked me to be on a women's

1220. ministry board. And it was just kind of an advisory board,

1221. getting the pulse of the church. And it was the

1222. first time I had anything to do with a women's organization.

  1223. Little did you know.

1224. Then I eventually became minister to women.

1225. Yeah, exactly. Full-time staff. You were pastoral staff to women, yeah.

1226. So that was an exciting time to see that. the

1227. women find a place in the church and grow and serve.

1228. Well, that's that whole thing of you don't know what

1229. you can do until you actually try it. I remember

1230. Kay had never done any kind of Bible study before

1231. Saddleback Church. She'd never, I was a youth pastor. She goes,

  1232. I can't do that. I could mentor one-on-one, but I

1233. can't do it. And the first study she taught in

1234. our little home was a Joyce Landorf study. And she

1235. said her knees knocked for the whole 45 minutes. She

1236. was so scared for six people sitting in the room.

1237. But that was the start. You just take a leap

1238. of faith and of course that's the whole history of

1239. our church. Let me give you the fourth metaphor. The

1240. Bible calls the church not just the family of God,

1241. not just the body of Christ, not just the temple

1242. of God, but we are the flock of God. The

1243. flock of God. What I'm talking about here is like

1244. a group of sheep gathered together for safety. Now Psalm

1245. 100 verse three says God made us and we are

1246. his and we are his people, the sheep of his pasture.

1247. We are in the flock of God. Now that probably

1248. doesn't sound too appealing to you because you have no

1249. idea how well sheep are cared for. Sheep are pretty

1250. dependent upon being cared for and they are cared for well,

1251. and I don't have time to go into this, I'm

1252. gonna cut this out of the message, but if you'll

1253. go and read Psalm 23 and John 10, write that

1254. on your outline, Psalm 23, John 10, you go and

1255. read how well sheep are cared for, and you'll feel

1256. a whole lot better about being in the flock of God,

1257. because Jesus is the good shepherd. Now, in God's flock,

1258. what does that mean, what's the benefit? As a part

1259. of God's flock, when I'm in the family of God,

1260. I'm in the church of God, in God's flock, I'm

1261. defended and cared for. I am defended and cared for.

1262. I'm not on my own. I have other people looking

1263. out for me. I enjoy the safety and the security

1264. and the protection. And what does that do? That makes

1265. me more confident. It makes me less anxious. The better

1266. connected you are in God's church, the less anxious you'll be,

1267. because you realize you're not on your own. And when

1268. you're getting beat up in the business world, you go,

1269. I'm not on my own. And when your family or

1270. marriage is being strained, you go, I'm not on my own,

1271. I'm in the flock. And when you're facing personal crisis

1272. or illness, I'm not on my own. You need people

1273. who walk into your life when everybody else walks out.

1274. That's what you need. And that's what you get in

1275. a church family. Now in the church, God has placed

1276. two kinds of people, two kinds of people to help

1277. you through your difficult times and to help you and

1278. to care for you when you're going through tough times,

1279. to be defensive for you. Write these down. Number one

1280. is my pastors. My pastors look out for me. Do

1281. you know the word pastor is the word shepherd? It's

1282. the same word. A shepherd is a pastor, a pastor

1283. is a shepherd. And in 1 Peter chapter five, God

1284. says this to pastors. This is instructions for me. Take

1285. care of God's flock, his people, that you are responsible for.

1286. Watch over them because you want to, not because you're

1287. forced to do it. You know, nobody pays me to

1288. do this. I've now served Saddleback Church for 40 years,

1289. For free, why? I really do love you. I love

1290. God and because I love God, I love his family,

1291. I love his flock, I love his children, I love you.

1292. Nobody pays me to do this. I do this because

1293. I love Jesus and I love you. He says do

1294. it willingly. But you need to pray for me because

1295. I'm not smart enough to lead a flock this big.

1296. I just, I'm on my knees constantly going, God, I

1297. need to know, what do you want us to do next?

1298. So pastors are given to look out for me in

1299. the flock of God, but there's another, and that is

1300. small group. You need a small group. There are 58

1301. one another's in the Bible. Love one another, care for

1302. one another, help one another, serve one another, share with

1303. one another, pray for one another, encourage one another. There

  1304. are 58 one another's. You can't do that in a

1305. crowd this size, a weekend crowd. You can only do

1306. that in a small group. And in the small group,

1307. that's where the flock of God really shows up. Galatians

1308. 6 says this, share each other's troubles and problems. And

1309. in this way, obey the law of Christ. I asked

1310. Don and Leah and Cynthia to talk about the small

1311. groups that they've been in for 40 years in this church.

1312. Listen to this. Well, guys, I wanna ask one more thing,

1313. and that is talk to me about a small group experience,

1314. because small groups have been a key to our church

1315. over the years, and you're not really gonna feel like

1316. a part unless you get to know some people. You

1317. don't have to know everybody to feel like it's your church,

1318. but you gotta know somebody. And they gotta know when

1319. you're not there. You gotta have some close friends. The

1320. average person, if you got six or more friends in

1321. a church, you're probably gonna stick. Because you don't have

1322. to know everybody, but you have to know somebody. Don,

1323. talk to me about that.

1324. I definitely don't know everybody at Saddleback.

1325. Even though you've been here from day one.

  1326. Yeah, a lot of people I don't know.

  1327. Yeah.

  1328. You need that friendship.

1329. You need somebody that recognizes you on Sunday, that you

1330. can see during the week. Because I don't have time

1331. to see the Henslers every week. Rick, for some reason,

  1332. has a busy schedule.

  1333. I don't know why. I don't talk to you two

  1334. times a day anymore.

1335. There are times going in my life that I needed.

  1336. Support. I needed support.

  1337. I went through a divorce.

1338. Horrible thing to go through.

1339. But I needed the support.

1340. I wouldn't have probably made it without the support of

1341. the help of the church people that helped me.

1342. Helped you walk through those dark days.

  1343. Yeah.

1344. But then God rewarded you. Oh, yeah. I came out good.

  1345. Better than you deserve.

1346. Our small group has been together for many, many years.

1347. And Besides doing Bible studies and campaigns together and growing spiritually,

1348. we have become a very incredible group of prayer warriors.

1349. In our group, at one time, we had 13 people

  1350. that were cancer survivors.

1351. Oh, my goodness. Oh, my goodness.

1352. And then we've seen each other through deaths of children.

  1353. Yeah, yeah.

  1354. And also through bankruptcies.

1355. Yep. 40 years of crises. Absolutely. Just imagine what can happen. Yes.

1356. But also a lot of celebration.

1357. Yeah, absolutely. Good, happy times.

1358. That's the thing that we hear most of all, and

1359. we hear from our leader as well as everybody, is

1360. can you imagine if we didn't have the support group,

1361. how would we get through this?

  1362. Right.

1363. I mean, I'll give you an example. Today, one of

1364. our members lost their mother. Oh my goodness, yeah. And

1365. we've been praying and we're there for support. And It

1366. just eases it. I had a little issue a few

1367. months ago. You did. You were in the hospital. Quadruple bypass.

1368. A little issue. Quadruple bypass.

1369. Just knowing I had prayer and support and people supporting

1370. her and being there for me.

1371. I don't know how non-believers and people who are not

1372. in a small group get through stuff. It just doesn't

1373. make sense. Well, thank you, guys. I'm going to say

1374. we'll do this again in 40 more years. 40 more years.

1375. All right. All right. Thank you. Okay. Now, let me

1376. give you quickly the fifth metaphor, and that is the

1377. church is a garden. The metaphor of the church is

1378. a garden or a vineyard. In fact, there are churches

1379. that are actually called Vineyard Church based on this idea.

1380. It's an organic metaphor that we grow and we are

1381. fruitful when we are working together. John chapter 15 verse

    John 15 chapter mention

1382. one and five, here on the screen, Jesus said, I

1383. am the true vine and my Father is the gardener

1384. and you are the branches. So we are God's garden.

1385. In God's garden, write this down, my life becomes productive.

1386. When I'm connected in God's garden, now all of a

1387. sudden I start becoming fruitful. The Bible calls it being fruitful,

1388. being productive. It's called bearing fruit. I'm able to make

1389. a contribution. Everybody I've ever met wants their life to count.

1390. Everybody I've ever met wants to make a difference. They

1391. want to make a contribution with their life. Where can

1392. you best do that? In God's garden where you will

1393. be productive. But here's the key again, you have to

1394. be connected. John 15, four and five on the screen

1395. says this. A branch cannot produce fruit if it's severed

1396. from the vine. And you cannot be fruitful. Read that

1397. as productive. You cannot be productive apart from me. I

1398. am the vine, Jesus says, and you are the branches.

1399. And those who remain in me and I in them

1400. will produce much fruit. You'll be much, you'll be very productive.

1401. Very productive. He says, and, but apart from me, you

1402. can do nothing. The point is this. You'll never be

1403. as productive as God intended for you to be with

1404. your life if you're not connected to a church family.

1405. You're just not going to. It teaches you the questions

1406. to ask, it teaches you the priorities to understand, it

1407. teaches you all kinds of stuff, but you're not gonna

1408. be as productive if you're disconnected from the church. A

1409. cut off branch cannot bear fruit, but when you're connected

1410. to the vine, life giving energy flows through you. I

1411. asked Lee and Cynthia and Don, to talk about the

1412. risks that they had to take over 40 years in

1413. order to be productive. Listen to this, last clip. Talk

1414. to the people here about some of the risks that

1415. you think, well, that's really not gonna happen, but we

1416. really did believe that it happened, and it did. So

1417. remember when we did the walking over to the property,

1418. the 6,000 people, what was that day called? I can't remember.

1419. It was home at last. Home at last.

1420. I still have the sweatshirt.

1421. Oh, you do? Home at last. Yeah, exactly.

1422. We all went behind you and you pushed the pulpit.

1423. Yeah, yeah, I did. We put the pulpit on wheels

1424. and we 6,000 people marched a mile from Tribuco Hills

1425. High School over to the property. And literally, if you

1426. look at the Lake Forest campus now, it's got trees

1427. all over it. There wasn't a single tree. It was

1428. a gravel pit. It looked like a moonscape. And we

1429. set up a tent on a moonscape with no trees,

1430. no green, nothing. And all of the burning up in

1431. the summer and freezing in the winter and stuff like that.

1432. But there was a pioneer spirit. Oh, absolutely. And God's

1433. not through with that. He wants to do it again

1434. with next generations. So talk to me about what you

1435. would say to the next generation of members.

1436. It's really exciting to be involved with that. I look back,

1437. and I was telling Don earlier that when I go

1438. on campus and I walk and look and see, again,

1439. hearing you read that letter way back at the beginning,

1440. now seeing it actually be right there in front of

1441. my eyes, it's just awesome to see what you have

1442. done and the church has done.

1443. And God has done. It's all of us. God used

1444. ordinary people. He did. Absolutely.

  1445. And it's exciting.

1446. It's exciting to be involved with something where you're not

1447. sure if it's going to work, but why not give

  1448. it a try? attitude.

1449. Let's see where this takes us.

1450. Or were we just dumb and we just went along

  1451. with it?

1452. I was trying to make this look better. You weren't dumb.

1453. There's no way we would have gotten here if you

1454. guys had been dumb. God brought an incredibly gifted group

1455. of core leaders at every stage, really. Every single stage

1456. of the church. We now have a new crop of

1457. gifted leaders that have come in that are just going

1458. to take us to the next peak. And all of that.

1459. And it's just so much fun just to take that

1460. risk and see what's going to happen and see God work.

1461. That has just been a great adventure. I think everybody

1462. wants to be a part of a movement.

1463. And if you don't take that step, you're missing out

1464. probably on the biggest adventure of your life.

1465. Here on earth. Yeah, you're right.

1466. I always use the example, God says you just have

1467. to have the faith of a mustard seed.

  1468. I don't have an avocado seed.

1469. And it's just amazing what has happened.

  1470. Yeah.

1471. Just okay. Yeah. It's not the size of your faith.

1472. It's the size of God. Little faith, big God gets

1473. big results. Well, even when you said we're going to

  1474. have satellite churches.

  1475. Right.

1476. How is that going to happen? Okay, maybe San Clemente,

1477. but that's probably it. Will anybody actually look at a video,

  1478. the screen?

  1479. Yeah.

1480. And then now look where we are. Yeah, four continents. Yeah,

1481. four continents. I want you to honor these pioneers of

1482. Saddleback Church, the first three members of the very first

1483. 101 class 40 years ago. Welcome Don and Lee and Cynthia.

1484. Come on out, guys. Love you guys. Love you guys. Yeah! Now,

1485. these guys have heard every bad joke I've told 100 times, okay?

1486. In fact, I always know, Lee, After Chris' Easter service,

1487. if I tell an old joke, he'll go, wow, there

1488. were a lot of new people here today. Because there

1489. were still people laughing. You guys, you're out here on stage.

1490. Say a word to your church.

1491. Overwhelmed to be here. And I got to plug junior high.

1492. If you're in junior high, you need to be in

1493. the junior high service, not listening to this boring sermon

1494. over Go to junior high.

1495. All right, good. All right.

1496. Don't miss out on the greatest adventure of your life

1497. and a wonderful opportunity to find what your real purpose

  1498. in life is.

  1499. Amen.

1500. And I know I speak for everyone who's up here,

1501. and I just want to thank you, Rick, for having

1502. the vision to start the Saddleback Church on just simply

1503. faith and what a huge blessing it has been, not

1504. only to myself, my family, but for everybody standing here.

1505. You've blessed us. Thank you very much. Thank you guys.

1506. Love you guys. This is just an example of the

1507. people who built this church over the last 40 years.

1508. Lee and Cynthia and Don, Dale, they're just normal people.

1509. But they became giants in faith over the last 40

1510. years by being connected to a place that would help

1511. them grow. Can you imagine the reward those people are

1512. gonna have in heaven for founding a church with 15

1513. people that is now one of the great churches of

1514. history and has had global impact? Great will be their reward.

1515. But here's the thing. our best days are ahead of us.

1516. And God has brought you here now for a purpose.

1517. You're not here just to take up space. You're here

1518. because God knows you have gifts, abilities, contacts, connections that

1519. he wants to use in his family for the next

1520. leg of the journey. I have said this many, many times,

1521. hundreds of times in 101 class. Can you imagine getting

1522. to heaven and 100 years from today, somebody walks up

1523. to you in heaven and says, I just wanna thank you.

1524. I'm here because of you. And you say, I don't

1525. even know you. He said, no, no, no, you don't

1526. know me. but you were one of the pioneers of

1527. Saddleback Church. Back there in 2020, when they only had

1528. 20 campuses. and you prayed, and you served, and you

1529. got involved, and you were a member, and you got connected,

1530. and you were generous, and you sacrificed, and you gave

1531. it your best shot, you invested your life in something

1532. that would outlast you, and 50 years after you died,

1533. that church reached me for Jesus Christ. I'm in heaven

1534. because of you. Will that be worth it? If you

1535. know anything more important to do with your life, I

1536. challenge you right now, if you know anything more important

1537. to do with your life, than to invest it in

1538. the one thing that's gonna last on the planet Earth

1539. when everything else is gonna burn up, the family of God.

1540. Nothing else is gonna last. It's gonna outlast your business,

1541. it's gonna outlast your hobby, it's gonna outlast your sports,

1542. it's gonna outlast your own family. If you know anything

1543. more important to do than build the family of God

1544. Bring people to Christ, build them up to maturity, teach

1545. them to discover their gifts, send them out in their

1546. ministry in the world to make an impact. If you

1547. know something more important, I invite you to stand up

1548. right now and tell us. Right now. Stand up and

1549. tell us what's more important than that. Because I decided

1550. a long time ago, as a very young man, I

1551. was not gonna waste my life. And I have not.

1552. I have used it for the glory of God. I

1553. want you so badly to know what it feels like

1554. to be used by God. 40 years, great history. It's

1555. nothing compared to where we're going. And you're here now.

1556. Will you join me? Let's charge hell with squirt guns.

1557. Let's go for it. Let's, in a dark, dark, and

1558. getting darker world, shine a light of truth. Shine a

1559. light of hope. Shine a light of joy to be

1560. for the good news, not against all the bad news.

1561. There's plenty of people out there. You wanna go join

1562. a negative movement, it's not here. There's plenty of other

1563. places to go be negative and talk about how bad

1564. the world is, but not here. You have five fundamental

1565. needs in your life. You have a need for identity.

1566. You need to know who you are. You have a

1567. need for stability. You need stability when life gets tough.

1568. You need capacity. You need a place to develop, in

1569. a safe place, your gifts and talents where people aren't

1570. gonna put you down for not having it perfect the

1571. first time you try it. You need security. of relationships,

1572. and you need productivity, you feel like you're making, your

1573. life is gonna make a long-term difference. Where else are

1574. you gonna get that besides the church of God? Nowhere. Nowhere.

1575. So I just end with one question. Given the fact,

1576. why should you remain disconnected when a church family like

1577. this has so much to offer to you? And if

1578. not here, Just go somewhere and find a church, but

1579. get connected. I want to close by talking to two

1580. different groups. To some of you, you've been here, you've

1581. been coming to Saddleback Services for a long time, months,

1582. maybe years, and you've attended, but you've never stepped across

1583. the line to member. You've never gotten connected. You've never

1584. been baptized. You've never joined the church, never taken classes.

1585. You've never gotten involved in a ministry. Many of you

1586. have families that don't live in the area. So you

1587. don't really see your families and relatives much. You don't

1588. have really family around you. Others of you, you're single.

1589. And maybe even you live by yourself. You don't have

1590. much family around you. Others of you, you're in a

1591. marriage or in a family where you don't feel supported.

1592. We will be your family We will be your family.

1593. And maybe all your life you've been trying to belong.

1594. There is a universal longing for belonging in everybody. Everybody

1595. has a longing for belonging. And I've heard many, many

1596. people tell me out on that patio, Rick, I've never

1597. felt I belonged anywhere. Until I got here. Until I

1598. got here. Because you're wanted here. You're not just welcome,

1599. you're wanted. And you belong and you fit and we'll

1600. help you. So what do you do? You take class 101,

1601. the membership class that maybe, I don't know, 50,000 people

1602. have taken. You get baptized. I'm gonna be baptized in

1603. a couple weeks. You get connected to a small group.

1604. Join us for the next leg of the journey. The

1605. other group I wanna talk to, those of you who've

1606. been members here with me for years, thank you. I'm

1607. gonna do a message just for you soon, but thank you.

1608. And my challenge to you as we start not just

1609. a new year, but a new decade is fall in

1610. love with the church again. It is the hope of

1611. the world. It is the hope of the world. There

1612. is no politics that can save the world. There's no

1613. business that can save the world. Only God can save

1614. the world. And it is the only thing that is

1615. gonna last on this planet. Last verse on the screen.

1616. Ephesians 3, 21. All glory belongs to God in the church. See,

1617. in the church, glory belongs to God in the church

1618. and in Christ Jesus for all time and eternity. This

1619. is an investment that will pay dividends for the rest

1620. of eternity. Let's bow our heads. If you don't know

1621. Jesus Christ, you need to get to know him first.

1622. You need to be saved. You need to say, Jesus Christ,

1623. I believe in you. I wanna follow you. I wanna

1624. learn to trust you. I accept your forgiveness. You don't

1625. have to understand it all. Just say, yes, Lord. Yes, Lord,

1626. I want to know you, and I wanna learn to

1627. love you. Thank you for loving me. And if you've

1628. been on the edge, you say, I've been attending Saddleback,

1629. but I've never actually got connected. I've never joined, never

1630. taken the class, never been, baptized, you need to be

1631. in the family of God, if not here, somewhere. And

1632. I challenge you to make that commitment to join us

1633. this month. And for those of you who are already in,

1634. as I said, fall in love with the church all

1635. over again, realizing that there is nothing greater to give

1636. our time our energy, our effort to, it's the only

1637. thing that's going to last on this planet. Father, I

1638. pray for everyone in the sound of my voice. And

1639. as the pastor of this church, I ask you to

1640. bless them. Bless their past, their present, their future. Bless

1641. their bodies. Bless their minds with creativity. Bless their physical health.

1642. Bless their finances, bless their relationships, and whereas there's conflict,

1643. bring peace. We look forward to this new decade together

1644. with great enthusiasm, knowing that you're gonna use ordinary people

1645. in extraordinary ways, just like you have done. You didn't

1646. bring us this far just to stop, but all the

1647. past is prologue in a launch pad for the future.

1648. And we're saying today, we're all in. In Jesus' name, amen.

1649. If you want... Thank you. If you want to take

1650. out a card and write down the day you want

1651. to take class 101, write the day down. If you

1652. want to be baptized by me, get your reservation in.

1653. Have I told you lately that I love you?
