Hi everyone, it's Nancy with your Wednesday edition of our daily walk.
-
We're continuing our study in Philippians, and this past Sunday we looked at the first few verses of chapter 2.
-
In verse 2 of that chapter, Paul wrote, So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy, complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord, and of one mind.
-
I've been thinking about that passage.
-
In particular, the first phrase, if there is any encouragement in Christ, what does that look like?
-
I see encouragement from two perspectives, actually.
-
The encouragement we have from Christ, the strength, the comfort, his grace, the assurance, the support we have as believers by being united to Him.
-
The second part of that verse speaks of comfort from love, participation in the Spirit, and affection and sympathy.
-
We can experience those things as a child of God because of what Christ did on the cross for us.
-
Also, think of encouragement in Christ as an active role we have as believers.
-
In Christ, meaning as a result of what he gives to us, we can encourage others through him by sharing that strength, that comfort, that grace, that support that he offers.
-
Because we are encouraged, we can be encouragers to others.
-
As we continue studying Paul's writing in Philippians, we'll see how we are to stand united in our love for the Lord and in our call to encourage others to experience God's great love, to place their hope in Christ.
-
Takes my mind to what Jesus said about loving God first and then loving others.
-
I need to take time daily to fill my pitcher and be encouraged as I drink from the water of life that He has for me, so that I can pour out that life-giving water into the cups of those who are thirsty.
-
I need to take time daily to be encouraged in Christ, to reflect on his great love, his grace, his forgiveness, to draw from his strength and his wisdom, so that I can stand with others and sharing his love and living out that connection with him.
-
We'll see more of that message as we continue studying in Philippians.
-
As we consider what being encouraged in Christ means for us, I'll close with another illustration of what I think it means to be in Christ.
-
This one from God's Word recorded in John chapter 15, verse 5, where Jesus references being in him.
-
And he said, I am the vine, you are the branches.
-
Whoever abides in me and I in him, it is he that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.
-
Oh my friends, may we find our encouragement in Christ.
-
Amen.
