  1. You're listening to the Bible Guys, a podcast where a couple of friends talk

  2. about the Bible in fun in practical ways. Well, good morning, Jeff,

  3. Good morning Chris. I am just want to welcome our listeners from around

  4. the world. I do too, and around the world. I want to

  5. welcome our listeners as well. I can't believe that people actually listen from other

  6. countries, isn't it amazing. I don't know how. I don't know how

  7. you found us. It's like ten of our of our listeners listen from outside

  8. the US. Wow. I just saw that the other day. I thought

  9. of the quote from Back to the Future they found me. I don't know

  10. how that they found me. Roun Marty Ron, Yes, who found you

  11. Bolivians. So, but I don't know how you found us. But thanks

  12. for finank you. So we're glad. Hey share us, share us with

  13. your friends. Yeah, that'd be great. Ye. So today we're doing

  14. a segment, and the segment is called where are our listeners from? Oh?

  15. I like this one, and so what we're gonna do is just highlight

  16. in this case a city and I'll give you a hint. It is a

  17. city in the United States. This is inside the country. Yes, and

  18. it is going to be what four comments about it? And let's see if

  19. you can guess what it is. Okay, so you want to you want

  20. to take So Number one, the world's biggest pirate invasion happens here every year.

  21. Wow, is that a reenactment? I'm a say that almost gives it

  22. away. No, Chris, It clearly says it's a pirate invasion. Don't

  23. say a pirate invasion reenactment? Right, right? So these poor people get

  24. invaded by pirates every year. Yeah, that's that's just why does anybody even

  25. live there? Every year? It's the biggest pirate invasion. That's what the

  26. sentence says. It's the biggest pirate invasion in the world, and it happens

  27. every year here. That's okay, so many movies are running through my mind.

  28. I'm just gonna move on. It's so funny, Okay. Number two

  29. the twist dance craze started here, which, by the way, I didn't

  30. know that. Oh, everybody do the It's Twist again like you did last

  31. summer. Okay, there you go. How about number three? R and

  32. B singer Ray Charles got his big start here Georgia Georgia. I always thought

  33. it was Georgia, like Atlanta, right, but this place is not in

  34. Georgia. No, people don't know that. Well, I mean, come

  35. on, yeah, well so clearly now you know it's not Georgia. By

  36. the way, I may have people might have thought Georgia immediately, and that's

  37. what I'm saying. I just blew or helped Jeff think about it that way.

  38. Yes, I'm a helper. Yeah, you're a big helper, all

  39. right. And then finally the last one is the Cuban sandwich was invented here.

  40. By the way, I was in Cuba four times, and I thought

  41. that I learned that the Cuban sandwich was invented in Cuba. It was invented

  42. by Cubans, you think, so, you think it was invented by Cubans

  43. In the United I kept asking for a Cuban sandwich in Havana, yeah,

  44. and they kept it was hard to find a good Cuban sandwich. And then

  45. finally it's in the tourist areas. So when I was in there getting it,

  46. he said, well, you know, only tourists buy these things because

  47. they're not really Cuban. That's what he said. Really yeah, I didn't

  48. know that. So, but all of the elements are Cuban elements, right,

  49. right, So you got the ham, You've got the the Swiss cheese,

  50. You've got that great roll, it's going to be flattened out. You've

  51. got the the pulled pork on the top of that with pickles and a little

  52. bit of mustard. Yeah, but it's got like the whole grain type mustard.

  53. Yeah. Yeah, it's one of my favorite sandwiches in the world.

  54. Yeah, that's great. Good, it is a good Cuban But it was

  55. invented in Tampa. According to this and Desiree knows Chris. Yeah, okay,

  56. well we didn't even do the drum roll. You said it? Oh

  57. did I say? I said it? You know, here's a drum roll

  58. Tampa, Tampa. There you go, he said, which, by the

  59. way, thank you listeners of that's right. My daughter lives in Tampa,

  60. so she's at least one of them. Listen. There you go. So

  61. that's a listener, thank you to the listener in Tampa. That's like saying

  62. my mom likes me. So we have one in Ohio and one in Tampa.

  63. That's not true that that's great. I think actually I looked at the

  64. stat and I think it's like six hundred people in Tampa. It's a lot

  65. of people. Yeah, so it's a lot of people. Actually I'm kidding.

  66. I mean that I don't know either, but it's a lot. So

  67. thank you guys, and hey, we'll be praying for you about that big

  68. pirate invasion. Yeah, that's so funny. The Buccaneers. By the way,

  69. in kids, you're wondering that's in Tampa Bay. Don't they have like

  70. a big festival like parade. Yes, my sister used to live in Tampa.

  71. The coolest logo, right, it's a pirate logo. It's kind of

  72. cool for the NFL team. Okay, well, there you go. Well

  73. that was riveting. Another riveting segment. Yes, by the Bible, guys,

  74. Well, we are going to be reading in John chapter seventeen, and

  75. it is worth reminding people, yes, that this is only found in the

  76. Book of John. In fact, the last several chapters, John has recorded

  77. things that Jesus taught that really only John recorded. Yes, so this whole

  78. study has been a comparison to the Gospels, a harmony of the gospels.

  79. And when it's written in two different places, we read both or three or

  80. possibly four. But we've been in John for quite a while. Yeah,

  81. I think this is the seventh day of us being only in John. Wow.

  82. But it's all been the same speech, right of course, one big

  83. long speech as they're walking from the upper room down through the kid Run valley,

  84. which would also be gardening a semoni area, up to the Mount of

  85. Olives, and then back to the garden. So here we go. Hey,

  86. because our segment was a little quicker. Yes, can I start off

  87. by reading this right here? It's kind of cool, that's super cool.

  88. So it lists the major events of passions. So he's talking about the life

  89. application study Bible. Oh yeah, it has this whole segment below the text

  90. of the Bible part has this whole big chunk which which is really cool because

  91. it's full of all kinds of notes and things. But this one has a

  92. big piece that lays out the calendar of the passion week, the week of

  93. jesus death. It says Sunday through Wednesday. Jesus spent each night in Bethany,

  94. just two miles east of Jerusalem, on the opposite slope of the Mount

  95. of Olives. He probably stayed in the home of Mary, Martha and Lazarus.

  96. Jesus spent Thursday night praying in the garden Becosemite. Friday and Saturday nights

  97. jesus body lay in the garden tomb. So it says Sunday the triumphal entry

  98. into Jerusalem. Monday, Jesus clears the temple. Tuesday, Jesus' authority challenged.

  99. In the temple, he taught the stories confronting the Jewish leaders. Greeks

  100. asked to see Jesus all of that disclosure, and then Judas agrees to betray

  101. Jesus. That all happens on Tuesday, and again this is probably most likely

  102. type chart, isn't it sure? And then it says Wednesday. The Bible

  103. does not say what Jesus did on this day. He probably remained in Bethany

  104. with his disciples. Thursday is the last supper. Jesus speaks to the disciples

  105. in the upper room. Jesus struggles in guests sementy, and Jesus is betrayed

  106. and arrested Thursday night. And then it says Friday, Jesus is tried by

  107. Jewish and Roman authorities and is denied by Peter. Jesus is crucified, and

  108. then on Sunday morning the resurrection on the third day. Yeah, so I

  109. would suggest that Wednesday he was still teaching in the temple. Yeah, and

  110. the reason being we literally read two different times it said each day each day,

  111. and then each night he would go back to the garden, right or

  112. back to Bethany. So I think each day is more than two days,

  113. is what I would say, right, Probably, right, So I think

  114. it's probably Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday he was preaching in the in the

  115. temples, stirring the pot and then yeah. Yeah. Anyways, other than

  116. that, though, isn't it interesting? It is interesting, and so then

  117. has all the Bible references next to it. And the thing that's the benefit

  118. of having a good study Bible, man, you need a good study Bible.

  119. You can get one of these on Amazon for like twenty bucks, right,

  120. right, They're not very expensive, but a hardcover, and it just

  121. helps you because it gives you so many extra insights to what I think we

  122. regularly have. Say, wow, you guys really make the Bible easy to

  123. understand. There's so many good insights. And where do you think we get

  124. these things from. We get them from the fact that We've owned study Bibles

  125. our whole life. We have some good commentaries, we've had some good teaching

  126. around us, and we've just collected all these things. Well, the benefit

  127. of a good study Bible is somebody collected all these things, right right,

  128. a good editor put a bunch of scenes together, and here's some really good

  129. insights. So you could do it too. That's what I'm trying to say.

  130. All right, now, may I read you? May I will allow

  131. that, you should say you may proceed. Oh yeah, well, I

  132. always always been out to the Tony Stark comment. I will when he's in

  133. doctor Strange's things and the he touches this sacred relic or whatever it was supposed

  134. to be, and the doctor Strange whips his arms with his cloak, Antny

  135. Stark goes, I will allow that. It's so funny. There you go,

  136. John seventeen. We're going to read one through nineteen. Here it says,

  137. after saying these things for the last six days, after saying all these

  138. things, Jesus looked up to heaven and said, Father, the hour has

  139. come. Glorify your sons so he can give glory back to you, for

  140. you have given him authority over everyone He gives eternal life to each one you've

  141. given him, and this is the way to have eternal life. To know

  142. you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, the one you sent

  143. to earth. I brought glory to you here on earth by completing the work

  144. you gave me to do. Now, Father, bring me into the glory

  145. we shared before the world began. I revealed you to the ones you gave

  146. me from this world. They were always yours. You gave them to me,

  147. and they have kept your word. Now they know that everything I have

  148. is a gift from you, for I have passed on to them the message

  149. you gave me. They accepted it and they know that I I have come

  150. from you, and they believe you sent me. My prayer is not for

  151. the world, but for those you have given me, because they belong to

  152. you. All who are mine belong to you, and you've given them to

  153. me, so they bring me glory. Now I am departing from the world,

  154. and they are staying in this world. But I am coming to you.

  155. Holy Father. You have given me your name. Now protect them by

  156. the power of your name, so that they will be united just as we

  157. are. During my time here I protected them by the power of the name

  158. you gave me. I guarded them so that not one was lost except the

  159. one headed for destruction, as the scriptures foretold. Now I am coming to

  160. you. I told them many things while I was with them in this world,

  161. so that they would be filled with my joy. I've given them your

  162. word, and the world hates them because they do not belong to the world,

  163. just as I do not belong to the world. I'm not asking you

  164. to take them out of the world, but to keep them safe from the

  165. evil one. They do not belong to this world anymore than I do.

  166. Make them holy by your truth. Teach them your word, which is truth.

  167. Just as you sent me into the world, I am sending them in

  168. the world, and I give myself as a holy sacrifice for them so they

  169. can be made holy by your truth. How humbling is that m Jesus is

  170. praying for his well. I mean, I want to say twelve, but

  171. he says, you know one's headed for destruction, right, So he's praying

  172. for all of them well, because you remember, like later on they vote

  173. for Matthias, they had to vote from all the ones that never left Jesus,

  174. So there's always more than just those twelve Oh yeah, yeah, he

  175. represent all that you've given me, give all the reference to all the disciples,

  176. yeah yeah, yeah, yeah, he's referring to Mary Martha. Yeah,

  177. he's referring Zebedee. He's referring to all these guys, right, sous

  178. Cleopus's wife Mary, Yeah yeah, Mary, Magdalene. All these people are

  179. part of that Collopus is one that we don't talk about. It fun yeah

  180. yeah. So yeah, it's just a humbling thing. And he prays for

  181. the church that it may be one that they may be unified. He prays

  182. that that that the Father would keep them safe in the world. And and

  183. and he says they don't belong in the world any more than I do.

  184. That's a pretty awesome statement, right, I love that phrase. Yeah,

  185. I love it. Yeah, just the the idea that we're you know,

  186. we're supposed to be. We're in the world, but we're not supposed to

  187. be of the world. The fact that we are made for heaven. And

  188. uh. And he says they belong to me, which is great. So

  189. I cannot read this passage without thinking of that new song song. You remember

  190. a new song? I do remember that. I think I have all their

  191. records by the way, Oh do you records or cassettes? All their recordings?

  192. Okay, but what do you have? What version? I think I

  193. have them all on my phone. Oh, good for you. You've updated

  194. it. Yes, so you remember that song. This one's with me?

  195. Yes, so so that I think you can correct me if I miss a

  196. line or something. But it on the record. People, get ready,

  197. there it is so you do know, you know more than me. But

  198. I think it says I was dreaming about heaven, something about the pearly gates.

  199. Yeah, we were all there. I was so scared in the presence

  200. of one so great I bowed my head. He felt unworthy, and he

  201. said he turned around, and I was going to walk away. And then

  202. he says, but then I heard someone say, father, Oh, father,

  203. this one's with me. Yep right, this one's with me. He's

  204. part of the reason I died on cavalry. And he says, Father,

  205. please let him in. I paid the price for him. Father, Oh

  206. father, this one's with me. Yep right. And so, but it's

  207. that idea. It's the idea that like he felt unworthy in the presence of

  208. God. He turns around to leave, and then Jesus says the phrase this

  209. one's with me, and it's that idea that like Jesus is basically talking about

  210. that you have given these disciples to me, they belonged to me. I've

  211. prayed for them, I'm I'm, I've prayed for their protection and the name

  212. that you've given me. And they don't belong in this world any more than

  213. I do. And one day they'll be with me, and when they get

  214. to heaven, you better believe. There is a version of that song that

  215. is sort of true. Right absolutely. I don't know which phrase Jesus said,

  216. but this one's with me is just as good as any other phrase.

  217. Father, this one's with me, part of the family. One of the

  218. reasons I died on Calvary. Yes, I just I love that concept.

  219. It's really good. So that was That's a good record. But still I

  220. just listened to that one because it starts off with the old Motown song people

  221. get ready remember and there's a train coming. Remember that. That that song

  222. and again the idea of being that Jesus punched the ticket that most of that

  223. album is about how Jesus punched the ticket for us, and there's there's no

  224. other way, and that's kind of what he's talking about here. But I

  225. love the fact that Jesus says they do not belong to this world anymore than

  226. I do. I think a lot of the conflict that Christians feel is that

  227. they feel like they're supposed to fit in here. They feel like this is

  228. home. And Paul reminds his readers later on. He tells him, Hey,

  229. uh, we just live in temporary tents. Isn't that what he says?

  230. These bodies are like that. He called them tabernacles and the King James,

  231. They're just temporary tents. A tent is fun. So I love tent

  232. camping. Love it. I find an excuse just to go out and camp

  233. in a tent a couple times a year. I've camped in the in the

  234. bush in uh in Kenya, different people. I love it, man,

  235. I hate it. If you ever asked me what would be my favorite thing

  236. to do, I would love to go out and do like a big tent

  237. camping trip through Yellowstone and the Grand Teetons or something. I'm watching Yellow stun

  238. Ry Yah, yeah, yeah, I'm talking about the National Park where the

  239. wolves aren't a stuff. But yeah, it's so that that's on there too,

  240. kind of so so yeah, but you're thinking, you're thinking about the

  241. six thousand square foot log cabin with all the fireplaces. This is what you're

  242. thinking about that they live in, right, it's not only show part.

  243. Yeah sure, so anyways, the that wilderness thing, but a tent.

  244. I love a tent. Tents are fun, but they're only temporary, right,

  245. right, they're not. You can't really make much of a life living

  246. in a tent, right. You need to put down more steaks. So

  247. what happens for us is a lot of times we want to put down steaks.

  248. We want to make this home. And Paul keeps saying, your life

  249. would be way easier for you if you just realize you're a traveler, right,

  250. you are a temporary resident, and that this is not home. He's

  251. gone and he's prepared a place for us, Jesus said just a couple of

  252. days ago in the podcast. Uh, he's he's gone, and there there's

  253. a celestial city. Do you remember reading Pilgrim's Progress John Bunyan's book from you

  254. know what five hundred and six hundred years ago, the Pilgrim's Progress, and

  255. they were going to the Celestial city the whole thing was was this this Christian

  256. He was a brand new convert, and he's on this journey all the way

  257. to the celestial city. And there's all these difficulties along the way, and

  258. he's not always confident in his direction. But and there's always this temptation to

  259. put down roots and stay, and instead he's always heading to this celestial city.

  260. And if we could just understand that we weren't made for this world,

  261. that's why it doesn't quite fit right for us. There is more. And

  262. you have this sense in your heart, in your mind. Surely my life

  263. is supposed to mean something more. Surely I was supposed to do something more.

  264. You're right, you weren't made for this earth. You're frustrated because the

  265. career you chose is to pay your bills. But that's not what you're made

  266. for. Perhaps right you want you're made for the kingdom. You're made for

  267. something more. Absolutely, and I love this phrase. They don't belong to

  268. this world anymore than I do, so, he says, So make them

  269. truly holy by your truth, and teach them your word, which is truth.

  270. You really want to start leaning into what you were made for, lean

  271. into God's words which, Hey, that's what our listeners are doing right now,

  272. right, is they're spending a little bit of time in God's word today.

  273. Yeah. And when he when he talks about he's praying for us to

  274. be unified. Right? Is that the scripture in other places where it says

  275. he prays that the church would be one? Is that the same one?

  276. That's very next phrase or very next day? That's tomorrow? Oh, that's

  277. tomorrow. Okay, who's going to pray for the future? Believers? You're

  278. really good at that. You're constantly tipping our hand. Is what's coming?

  279. Hey, listen, you've read the Bible of time or two, I've read

  280. the Bible time together. Yeah, yeah, yeah, so yeah so.

  281. But I just I love the fact that Jesus has he's showing genuine concern and

  282. he's praying for the success of his mission. Of course, right, obviously

  283. it's for God's glory, right, but at the same time, there's genuine

  284. concern. He's like, Heavenly Father, I just want you. I'm not

  285. praying because it even even says it right here, he says, I'm not

  286. asking you to take them out of this world, but keep them safe from

  287. the evil one and so there's genuine concern for their well being because it just

  288. goes to show you that Jesus has true love for imperfect people. So he

  289. chose, he chose these guys are like they're tax collectors, and and they're

  290. zealous, and there are people that are misguided, right and and and these

  291. people are just imperfect people and and and people are who he, by the

  292. way, knows they're about to scatter. He knows they're about to Yeah,

  293. he's already said it. He knows they're going to deny him, and their

  294. faith is is not as strong as you know. They're gonna let him down.

  295. They're gonna leave them alone. That's why he says, you're gonna let

  296. me alone, he says, But I'm not gonna be alone because I have

  297. the Father. He says, but you're gonna leave me alone in just a

  298. minute. So so but he is genuine concern, which which again I love

  299. this too because think about this. So when when we read the Bible and

  300. it says God loves you, it's like it's like this godly, heavenly,

  301. supernatural love. But yet Jesus has spent three and a half years with them,

  302. and so there's there's you have to believe that there is a you know,

  303. the Bible says that he experienced every range of human emotion, right,

  304. so he's got this sort of like brotherly, earthly affection that is very relatable

  305. to understand. So it isn't just like I love you from Afar, it's

  306. I love you up close. I know you, I see you, I'm

  307. relationally interacting with you. I know what it's like to experience you on your

  308. worst days. So so for me when he's when he has so much genuine

  309. concern, it's just a great comforting, humbling sort of thing to know that

  310. God loves us from Afar and loves us because we're his creation, but he

  311. also loves us by name, and he knows us and our imperfections, and

  312. yet he knows the depths of our heart and he loves us the same.

  313. That's really comforting, yep. And then he ends it with I'm just as

  314. you sent me into the world, I'm sending them into the world. Right,

  315. I'm on a mission. They're on a mission because they're not made for

  316. this world anymore than I am. So we're here on an invasion mission and

  317. I'm leaving. But they're staying and now I'm sending them to go do what

  318. I did. And then he said, I'm going to pay this holy sacrifice

  319. so that they can be made holy by your truth. Yeah and really powerful.

  320. Now tomorrow he's going to pray for us, for you and me.

  321. Yeah, Jesus prayed for you before he died, which is really cool.

  322. Yeah, it's extremely cool. Well, hey, that's our time and so

  323. hopefully we will see you tomorrow on the Bible. Guys,
