  1. You're listening to the Bible Guys, a podcast where a couple of friends talk

  2. about the Bible in fun in practical ways. Hey, Jeff, you know

  3. what I love about you. You're both fun and practical, fun and practical

  4. the same time. Wow. Well, you know it's not just me,

  5. you also are I am. And one of the ways we know is that

  6. it says literally on the thing, that is two guys that like to talk

  7. about the Bible and fun, and it calls us friends. It calls us

  8. a couple of friends, a couple of friends. That's right. Yeah,

  9. we're also coworkers, yes, and pastors. We live in the same state,

  10. and humans. Yeah, that's right. We both eat food. We

  11. have so much in common, we just become best friends. Now we both

  12. walk up and shout out your favorite dinosaur right now? Do you ever see

  13. step brothers? No? No, oh goodness, gracious, that's a great

  14. scene. Okay, and they all look at each other and they say philosopher

  15. aptor anyway, Okay, so today, Jeff, you are going to pretty

  16. much, uh, I'm leading you down the path with words and you have

  17. to guess what. It's a lot like the game Taboo. Yes, so

  18. I'm gonna try to get you to say a word without without saying the words

  19. that are posted on the screen. Yeah, for the viewers, we're going

  20. to post the italicized words on the screen, because, to be honest with

  21. you, my job isn't as hard as yours, is, right, you

  22. have to somehow get me to say this word without saying the italicized words.

  23. That's right. All right. So the profession of several of Jesus's disciples,

  24. uh, fishermen. Yes, And what what would they be doing when they

  25. were acting like fishermen? They would be fishing fishing? There you go.

  26. Okay, you couldn't You just couldn't say sport, rod line, hook or

  27. catch. Oh yeah, okay, all right, And you weren't already allowed

  28. to say fish because it was it was a part of the word. That's

  29. right. Okay, okay. Let me see. There's a game, yes

  30. that you have to go to a course and you racing. You do a

  31. thing with a stick, try to get it in a hole. Okay,

  32. no, no, no, no, you go. Yes, So you

  33. said golf What is the thing you're trying to get in the hole? There

  34. you go, golf ball. I wasn't ought to say white dimple, small

  35. hit or curb. Oh did you said Tiger Woods plays with a There you

  36. go. I'm glad that's what you would do. It's not what I did.

  37. Yeah, well, I'm just letting you know the better way. Yeah,

  38. it's not the better way. That's okay. It's just that's what we

  39. do in life. We live and we learn a little bit. Okay,

  40. this is one of the areas where I think that you are superior to me,

  41. oh, better looking, with that, with handsome, with regard to

  42. maintenance. Yeah, maintenance like on your home landscape. Nope, nope,

  43. nope, nope, in the building itself. So she wants you to be

  44. remodeling. Okay, yes, So when you're a guy that can do remodeling

  45. and things like that, and you say he's so handy, handy, there

  46. you go handy. Okay, let me sa way, I I'm not really

  47. that handy. I just attempt and then, you know what, so many

  48. times I've had I've attempted something, I destroy it and we have to call

  49. somebody to fax it. Yeah, well that's we just we just call somebody

  50. now because I'm not I'm not even kidding. This has happened so many times

  51. in my home. That's funny, but I attempt it. Okay. Uh.

  52. Usually men like to build these giant things in their basement and then watch

  53. watch and watch it run around and around and around, and they'll build a

  54. little town train. And there you go. What train, said train?

  55. What kind of train? Uh? Freight train? Okay, you also make

  56. Sometimes people will make cars. Sometimes they'll make caboose No, railroad, no,

  57. no, they'll make automobiles sometimes or I'm talking about the word before train.

  58. Uh, so make a sometimes they'll put together a plastic car. Or

  59. sometimes they'll make a model model train. There you go, yes, very

  60. good? All right? Oh man, I bet you all of our listeners

  61. beat me on that one. I bet you yep. And then here's one

  62. gummut listeners. I'm sorry. Besides a movie star, okay, you would

  63. think of John Wayne as a cowboy. There you go. Nice. Okay,

  64. good job. So I wasn't allowed to say cattle, herd, ranch,

  65. boots or horse for that yeah, and for model train, I wasn't

  66. allowed to say hobby, toy, transport, tracker, scale, So good

  67. job. Since you were five for five to day, hey buddy, all

  68. right, Hey, by the way, real quick twenty second story. My

  69. father served in the navy, or no, excuse me, my father in

  70. law served in the Navy on the USS Enterprise and they were docked and and

  71. John Wayne had come up to the Enterprise and all of the men who noticed

  72. that he was there on the shore were gathered on the side. We're talking

  73. thousands of men. They're cheering right well, which the Enterprise was a aircraft

  74. care. Aircraft care, well you know big those things right right. Well,

  75. John Wayne was wanting to go on to the aircraft care, but they

  76. were not They didn't have a bridge, you know, or a walk away

  77. or something like. They didn't have it out. So he decides to shimmy

  78. on the big, huge black chain from the shore all the way up.

  79. Now can you can imagine how high that is and those areas and those are

  80. greasy. Yeah, so he's shimmies. He actually gets on it, and

  81. he hangs below the chain and shimmy's all the way up. And by this

  82. time he's drawn the crowd of almost every other whole ship right right, and

  83. here's comes John Wayne. And so he shimmies all the way up and then

  84. finally when he gets up there, he looks at the people and he straightens

  85. his hat, his cowboy hat, and he says, and I'm gonna say

  86. heck, but he didn't say heck. Okay, and he goes, well,

  87. what the heck do I do? Now? That was it? And

  88. my father in law will never forget that quote, right, And he thought

  89. that was the best thing in the world, right, you know, but

  90. he didn't say it. That was a tough guy. Oh my goodness,

  91. tough guy. But I mean you think about it like that is the epitome

  92. of his images. Ye, right, right, there's no game. I'm

  93. not gonna wait for a gangway. I'm just gonna show me up this chain

  94. several hundred feet up and out. Yes, yeah, yeah, right,

  95. and he makes it, he doesn't fall, he makes it. It's crazy.

  96. Yeah, okay, Well we are continuing on. It's a little silly

  97. there. We we don't take ourselves too seriously, but we do take our

  98. faith seriously. That's right. And today this is a big one. I

  99. mean, this is where Jesus is placed on the cross. Oh yeah,

  100. and in Matthew chapter this is in all four gospels. Ye, Matthew chapter

  101. twenty seven, Mark fifteen, Luke twenty three and John chapter nineteen. And

  102. one of the most important moments in human history is right here. Yeah,

  103. it is as he's taking the punishment for our sin in his body, so

  104. Matthew chapter twenty seven, verse thirty three says. And they went out to

  105. a place called Golgatha, which means place of the skull. The soldier gave

  106. him wine mixed with bitter gall, but when he had tasted it, he

  107. refused to drink it. After they had nailed him to the cross, the

  108. soldiers gambled for his clothes by throwing dice. Then they sat around and kept

  109. guard as he hung there. A sign was fastened above jesus head announcing the

  110. charge against him, and it read, this is Jesus, the King of

  111. the Jews. Two revolutionaries were crucified with him, one on his right and

  112. one on his left. The people passing by shouted abuse, shaking their heads

  113. in mockery. Look at you now, they yelled at him. You said

  114. you're going to destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days. Well,

  115. then, if you're the son of God, save yourself and come down from

  116. the cross. The leading priests, the teachers of religious law, and the

  117. elders also mocked Jesus. He saved others, they scoffed, but he can't

  118. save himself. So he is the king of israel Is He let him come

  119. down from the cross right now, and we'll believe him. He trusted God,

  120. So let God rescue him now if he wants him, For he said,

  121. I am the son of God. Even the revolutionaries who were crucified with

  122. him ridiculed him in the same way. In Mark, chapter fifteen, verse

  123. twenty two, I says, and they brought Jesus to a place called Gogotha,

  124. which means place with the skull. They offered him wine drugged with myrrh,

  125. but he refused it. Then the soldiers nailed in Jesus to the cross,

  126. and they divided his clothes and threw dice to decide who would get each

  127. peace. It was nine o'clock in the morning when they crucified him. A

  128. sign announced a charge against him. It read the King of the Jews.

  129. Two revolutionaries were crucified with him, one on his right and one on his

  130. left. The people passing by shouted abuse, shaking their heads in mockery.

  131. Ha look at you now, they yelled at him. You said, you

  132. were going to destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, Well,

  133. then save yourself and come down from the cross. The leading priests and teachers

  134. of religious law also mouncked Jesus. He saved others, they scoffed, but

  135. he can't save himself. Let this messiah, this King of Israel, come

  136. down from the cross so we can see it and believe him. Even the

  137. men who were crucified with Jesus ridy killed him. In Luke chapter two,

  138. verse thirty two, it says two others, both criminals, were led out

  139. to be executed with him. When they came to a place called the Skull,

  140. they nailed him to the cross, and the criminals were also crucified,

  141. one on his right and one on his left. Jesus said, Father,

  142. forgive them, for they don't know what they're doing. And the soldiers gambled

  143. for his clothes by throwing dice. The crowd watched the leader. The crowd

  144. watched, and the leader scoffed. He saved others, They said, let

  145. him save himself if he's really God's Messiah, the chosen One. The soldiers

  146. mocked him too, by offering him a drink of sour wine. They called

  147. out to him, if you are the King of the Jews, save yourself.

  148. A sign was fastened above him with these words, this is the King

  149. of the Jews. One of the criminals hanging beside him scoffed, So you're

  150. the Messiah. Are you prove it by saving yourself and us two while you're

  151. at it? But the other criminal protested, don't you fear God even when

  152. you've been sentenced to die. We deserve to die for our crimes. But

  153. this man hasn't done anything wrong. And then he said, Jesus, remember

  154. me when you come into your kingdom. And Jesus replied, I assure you

  155. today you will be with me in Paradise. And then in John chapter nineteen,

  156. verse e, Eventina says, carrying the cross by himself, he went

  157. to the place called the place of the Skull in Hebrew Golgatha. There they

  158. nailed him to the cross. Two others were crucified with him, one on

  159. either side, with Jesus between them. Pilot posted a sign in the cross

  160. that read Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews. The place where

  161. Jesus was crucified was near the city and the sign was written in Hebrew,

  162. Latin, and Greek, so that many people could read it. Then the

  163. leading priests subjected and said to Pilot, change it from the King of the

  164. Jews to he said, I am the King of the Jews. Pilot replied,

  165. no, I have written. No, what I have written, I

  166. have written. When the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they divided his clothes among

  167. the four of them, and they also took his robe. But it was

  168. seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom. So they said,

  169. rather than tearing it apart, lest throw dice for it. This fulfilled the

  170. scripture that says they divided my garments among themselves, and three dice for my

  171. clothing. So that is what they did. Standing near the cross where Jesus

  172. mother and his mother's sister marry, the wife of Cleopus and Mary Magdalene.

  173. When Jesus I saw his mother standing there beside the disciple he loved, he

  174. said to her, dear woman, here is your son. And he said

  175. to his disciple, here is your mother. And from then on his disciple

  176. took her into his home. Who there's a lot in there, buddy,

  177. Yeah, I'm sure is it covers a lot of the big events that happen

  178. on the cross here. Yeah, So I think the best way to do

  179. it probably is just to go in chronological order, you know, start with

  180. Matthew and work her way through. Yeah, just I don't miss anything.

  181. So it says they took him out to the till Golgatha. Yeah, you've

  182. been to Goal Gotha. Yeah. And there's a place right outside the city

  183. walls that I believe is the more accurate place where he would have been crucified

  184. on the crossroads. Yeah, a public display and it looks like a looks

  185. like let's go. Yeah, the two deep eyes are still there. The

  186. nose has come off of it. But back in the eighteen hundreds when it

  187. was discovered you could see it. Now there's a bus depot down there at

  188. the base of it, which is craz Yeah. And then one of the

  189. reasons why I think it's pretty clear that that would be the legit Goal Gotha

  190. is because of the fact that it was just outside what was then the city

  191. walls. So then there were new walls built after that, but then the

  192. city walls, and it was at the main crossroads between the road that would

  193. have head out to the Mediterranean Sea and the road that would have gone to

  194. Damascus. And the reason why you know that that's important is because the Romans

  195. loved to crucify in a public place where everybody could see it. That's what

  196. it was the purpose, right, That's why Pilot put the here's the king

  197. of the Jews, right, Jesus of Naza, king of Jews, in

  198. all three languages. Was so that everybody could see it was a message,

  199. right, yeah, And and he wrote it and Hebrews so the Jews can

  200. read it. He wrote it in Latin so the Romans could read it,

  201. and the Helenus and others who could read Greek. That's why he wrote wrote

  202. it in Greek. So so then it says they they gambled over his robes.

  203. Well, they mixed with bitter gall. Oh, yeah, the gall

  204. is it's like a narcotic. It was a narcotic. It was. It

  205. was like us saying, give me more morphine, right, right, But

  206. he refused to drink it to fulfill the prophecies. Correct. So Jesus faced

  207. this full on, fully conscious, nothing deadened in him. He faced the

  208. punishment for us and without any medication at all. It's pretty pretty brutal.

  209. Yeah, And and the fact that they were mocking him the whole way,

  210. telling him to save himself. Little did they know that he had just had

  211. a conversation with Pilot and said, don't you know that if I wanted to,

  212. I can call legions of angels down at my command. But but but

  213. you know, she's not going to go on the court, you know,

  214. take himself off the cross. We know that. And and then once again

  215. they gambled for his clothes, They threw dice, and and they cast lots.

  216. And that was another prophet after they nailed him to the cross. Yes,

  217. yes, yes, yeah, yeah, yeah yeah. And so we

  218. often think of being nailed right through the through the palm of the hand,

  219. right, but the hand would have always also considered the forearm. If they

  220. nailed you through the palm of the hand, it would have just slowly your

  221. own weight would have torn out of your you know, between your your middle

  222. finger and your ring finger. But normally what they do is come just below

  223. the bottom of the wrist and nail there, which by the way, has

  224. one of the most sensitive nerves in your body. And they would nail right

  225. through that and that would hook you on to the cross. You couldn't get

  226. off. Yeah, And then the same thing with the feet. Rather than

  227. nailing between the metatarsals, they'd come up, go right through just above the

  228. ankles and nail you to the cross that way where you couldn't you couldn't fall

  229. off the cross. Then it's horrific, one of the most painful ways to

  230. die, because you didn't die from being from being nailed to the cross.

  231. You died from being exposed out in the in the weather, in the sun,

  232. dehydration, and then eventually suffocation by not being able to lift yourself up

  233. to breathe right because it was it was a seesaw effect, and so it

  234. was really a battle of pain from wrist to hands, that's correct, and

  235. a shifting of endurance just to breathe right. And now another details, so

  236. and then they gambled over as close. Yeah, right right, sorry?

  237. And then and then another detail is so we moved from Matthew, which includes

  238. all those details. Ye, mark includes the detail that they crucified him at

  239. nine in the morning, which some of your versions may say it was the

  240. third hour. So there was this thing where the calendar began at sundown at

  241. six thirty that started the day, and they considered it six thirty to six

  242. thirty sort of the sleeping hours, even though that you know, it was

  243. just sort of categorized. And then from six thirty in the morning when the

  244. sun rose, all the way until sundown those twelve hours they had this thing

  245. in the scripture where they would say, like the first hour, the second

  246. hour of the third hour, the eleventh hour would have been like five o'clock.

  247. And so it gives us incredible detail because again, you remember, they

  248. did not want him to be crucified on the Sabbath, which is why they

  249. were hurrying this, which is why on Friday he dies. We're about to

  250. find out right before the Sabbath hits, just three hours before the Sabbath hits,

  251. So at nine o'clock in the morning is when they threw him on the

  252. cross. The two revolutionaries on either side apparently mark includes the fact that they

  253. were both partaking in the mockery. And then Luke was the one that actually

  254. talks about how eventually one of them has a moment of repentance because apparently they

  255. were up there for obviously hours and who knows why, but this one criminal

  256. on the cross decides to put his faith in trust, recognizing that he is

  257. the Christ, and he says, remember me when when we come into your

  258. kingdom, which by the way, is like a death row salvation, right,

  259. somebody who spends their whole life deserving sin and death and destruction and execution,

  260. and then at the last minute on death row says, I put my

  261. faith in trust in you. And what does Jesus do today? You'll be

  262. with me in paradise. I wonder this is just circumstantial. But Jesus in

  263. Luke chapter twenty three, had already said, Father, forgive them. They

  264. don't know what they're doing. Yeah, And then this guy says, hey,

  265. Jesus, would you forget me? Right? I wonder if that was

  266. the pivotal moment for this guy. Was everybody's yelling, you know, revolutionaries

  267. and thieves and all them. They'd be shouting and cursing the Romans and spitting

  268. in their faces. And Jesus said that they don't say mocking, rocking him.

  269. And Jesus says, they didn't take my life from me. They they

  270. I'm going to lay it down will So Jesus wasn't fighting while probably these other

  271. revolutionaries were now all this hostility. They stand Jesus up on the cross,

  272. and his first statement his father, forgive them, and they don't know what

  273. they're doing while they're nailing him to the cross, And that may have been

  274. in my mind that's a logical place for one of them to go, what

  275. what is this about? And then watching everybody all this hostility towards Jesus and

  276. the love and the peace that Jesus is extending capture this man's attention. So

  277. one goes, get us both off the cross, and the other one goes,

  278. dude, Jesus, take me where you're going? Yeah, right,

  279. yeah. And and by the way that you know, the body of the

  280. Bible says to be absent from the is to be present with the Lord,

  281. you know, And if God truly exists out of time, which we believe

  282. that he does, then you know today you'll be with me in paradise.

  283. And just that idea that you know, that promise that Jesus gives is something

  284. that we could all hang on to. Right. So it's never too late,

  285. that's the invitation, that's right. It's never too late to repent,

  286. it's never too late to turn to Jesus, regardless of what you've done,

  287. regardless of your past. When you find out that forgiveness is available, that's

  288. right. Maybe that guy had never contemplated the idea that he could be forgiven

  289. and then finds out he can be because his request for forgiveness comes after hearing

  290. that Jesus was willing to forgive, right, and that that's pretty significant anyways.

  291. Then Jesus said, today you'll be with me in your kingdom. Right

  292. in my kingdom, I mean today you will be with me in paradise.

  293. And that's one of those moments that you just have to understand. A lot

  294. of people say, oh, you can't go to heaven if you don't get

  295. baptized, Well, this guy didn't. Right now, you can't go to

  296. heaven if you don't take comunion. This guy didn't. Can't go to heaven

  297. if you don't do a bunch of good deeds. This guy didn't. Right,

  298. What is necessary at its very foundation, at the base, the bottom

  299. level, is faith in Christ and repentance in your sins. Jesus is the

  300. Savior, and I need him to forgive my sins right now. And that

  301. that's it, and that's that's all that this guy did. So Jesus plus

  302. nothing. That's exactly right. That's what you gets say to heaven. There

  303. are no works. And so so it goes on to say as well,

  304. so if you move into John's account, it talks about how he has another

  305. saying on the cross. Right, So so some of the sings on the

  306. cross that he's already spoken his father, forgive them, for they don't know

  307. what they're doing. And then he also cries out, today you'll meet with

  308. me in paradise. And then he has a third another's seven sayings on the

  309. cross. That's right, But this is three included right here in this passage.

  310. And the third one is Jesus looked over and he saw his mother standing

  311. there beside the disciple. He loved, Yeah, that, oh it might

  312. be the author of this is John. And he says, dear woman,

  313. here's your son. And he said to the disciple, here is your mother.

  314. And from this and then from then on this disciple took her into his

  315. home. And and by the way, this is an indication. This is

  316. why we believe that Joseph, the earthly father of Jesus, had passed,

  317. because he disappears somewhere in the equation in Jesus ministry. He's gone. Yeah,

  318. he's never mentioned again after Jesus was twelve. Right, and then and

  319. then here you know, here Jesus is doing something practical, uh, and

  320. and customary for Jews, which is to make sure that his mother is taken

  321. care of after he's gone. So he passes the responsibility of his mother onto

  322. John. And and this would have made sense because John was there president of

  323. the crucifixion, because John was the one who was present in Caiphas's house,

  324. and he was he had an in and so some people believe that that he

  325. was he was there for those reasons. He appears. He's the only disciple

  326. named at the cross at the the crucifixion of Jesus. And that's pretty significant.

  327. Now there are other when when we say disciple, what we're talking about

  328. is one of the twelve twelve apostles, right, because we do know that

  329. that Joseph Barimythia was there. We're gonna read about that tomorrow. We know

  330. that Nicodemus was there. And these are also a disciples. These are disciples,

  331. the followers of Jesus, but they weren't the apostles. So when you

  332. talk about the twelve. But it's interesting the women show up, right,

  333. right, isn't that something? Well, you know, my old pastor used

  334. to say women first, first at the cross, first of the two.

  335. Yeah, the women were the first of the cross and first of the two.

  336. Absolutely. And and so Jesus has great love for his mother and is

  337. taking care of the family. He's the oldest son, and so hey,

  338. we need to button this up. And John, who by the way,

  339. is the youngest of all the disciples. Yeah, so he he says,

  340. Hey, John, I want you to take care of my mom for me.

  341. Now. It didn't you also here this morning that John might have been

  342. the cousin of Jesus. Yeah. Yeah, so we've commented on that here

  343. on that podcast, right we have here, So I just heard another pretty

  344. famous pastor, uh and professor, he's a college uh president, mentioned that

  345. John was jesus cousin. James, and John says, and that's right,

  346. and uh, the mother of or the wife of Kleapus or Mary. Right,

  347. you've got you've got all these these the names of all these women that

  348. are there. But John was probably a cousin of Jesus, so it makes

  349. sense that he would hand off his mother's responsibility to family members, that's right,

  350. yeah, yeah, And and and the reason why people believe that they're

  351. the cousins is because of the uh, the two references that talk about the

  352. women at the cross, and one refers to them by name, and then

  353. the other one says the sister of Mary, the sister of Mary, right

  354. yeah. So so you could you could deduce that, and again we don't

  355. know, but it's very probable right there in John standing near the cross was

  356. jesus mother and his mother's sister, Mary, the wife of Cleopus and Mary

  357. Magdalene. And in another one it mentions the name of Mary's sister, who

  358. is the wife of Zebedee, right right, So that that that's how it

  359. works out. And so John is standing with his mom and his aunt at

  360. the cross, right yeah. And and it makes also it makes a lot

  361. of sense also if he was a head, if Zebedee was a priest,

  362. priest, very likely, and then that would give the reason why John had

  363. access to the whole thing. So so there's a lot here and uh,

  364. and I would just definitely say that as we're moving through, you know,

  365. these events in Jesus life. You know, again, every single hour counts.

  366. Every every event on the Cross is significant, and even the things that

  367. seem like their minor details were done, uh, you know, to fulfill

  368. prophecy. And so just imagine, you know, if if the odds are

  369. incalculable, that one man will fulfill all these prophecies, just know that the

  370. details given are given to prove that he is the Messiah. He is the

  371. long awaited Messiah who is fulfilling all the scriptures, all the prophecies God's promises

  372. from the very beginning thousands of years ago, which again are insurmountable, incalculable

  373. odds, and Jesus fulfills every single one of them. That's hundreds of prophecies.

  374. One other thing, and this is incredibly practical. Here's Jesus just before

  375. he dies, preparing for his family. It's appropriate for Christians to prepare to

  376. take care of their family after they die, right. Most people in America

  377. die without a will, They die without any plan to provide for their family.

  378. But Jesus is doing that here. And there's a note here in the

  379. Life Application study of Bible says our families are precious gifts from God and we

  380. should value and care for them under all circumstances, neither Christian work, nor

  381. key responsibilities in any job or position excuse us from caring for our families.

  382. What can you do today to show your love to your family? What a

  383. great thing, you know, right in the middle of this devastating time.

  384. Jesus goes ahead and mixtures, providing for the gift that God gave him in

  385. his family. Yeah that's great. Yeah, well, that seems like a

  386. great place to end, and we will pick up next time and we'll hopefully

  387. see you then on the Bible. Gus
