  1. You're listening to The Bible Guys, a podcast where a

  2. couple of friends talk about the Bible in fun in

  3. practical ways. You know, I just realized that Rollin has

  4. us wearing those headphones you Yeah, and if you're watching

  5. on video, it is so not accurate. Yeah, we need

  6. a new role in for sure. So hey, welcome to

  7. The Bible Guys. My name is Chris, this is Wesley,

  8. and we are feeling well. He's filling in for Jeff,

  9. and we are glad to be here and we've had

  10. a good time.

  11. This has been fun.

  12. This has been a great week and uh and some

  13. great content honestly, honestly goodness. So hey, we're gonna jump

  14. right into our segment. Desiree has given us the uh

  15. sort of like the taboo, which she calls guess the word,

  16. And if you're watching online, then we're gonna put this

  17. on the screen, not the word that he's trying to

  18. get me to say, but rather the word that you're

  19. not allowed to say, because that's really the key. And

  20. in a lot of ways, this is harder for you

  21. than it is for me. Yeah, yeah, because you have

  22. to you have to, you have to say, get me

  23. to say the word without saying the keywords.

  24. Okay, are you with me? All right? So I'm making

  25. sure I got this right.

  26. Yeah, So he's just now saying it because we don't like.

  27. Yeah, we don't preview, we don't stuff. So it's it's

  28. on the fly.

  29. It's always on the fly. So I will, I will

  30. do my best, buddy, So go ahead and uh, get

  31. me to say the first word.

  32. Okay, here we go. So I'm going to say the word,

  33. but I can't say the italicized words. No.

  34. No, no, you can't say the word. You have to

  35. get me to say the word.

  36. Okay, so I can say the italicized word. No. Oh,

  37. So this is going to be difficult.

  38. Then yes, that's the point. So you can't say any

  39. of the talisized words, but you can say anything you want.

  40. For instance, let me just say this, so let's just

  41. say the word is uh uh batman?

  42. Yeah?

  43. Right, and then and then I'm not allowed to say

  44. Robin or Batman, Bill or superhero or superhero. I'll say,

  45. I'll think of a clever way, and I'll say I'll say,

  46. Michael Keaton played this, yeah, this role, okay, right in

  47. a growley voice or something like that right. Yeah, I'll

  48. find a clever way for you for you to say Batman.

  49. Yeah, I got it. Okay, Number one, yep, I think

  50. I got these. This is gonna be good. I can

  51. I can explain. Well, so number one, Yes, domicile, domicile.

  52. I think that's it should be the right. Oh, say

  53. more things, mansion, mansions. I just thought of that one

  54. in Heaven. Mansion.

  55. Yeah. Uh, and domicile's an RV, right.

  56. I can't say, Okay, let's.

  57. Say mansion is okay, a house, a castle, h a

  58. tiny cabin, shack. A tiny cabin is a shack. Shack

  59. is is also a cave cabin, hut tent? Oh?

  60. Yes? Dwell? Wow, yeah, dwell. That one was so domici

  61. could be wrong, but I thought that was a word

  62. for like house. Someone's gonna correct me in the comments

  63. on YouTube. I need to look that up. I should

  64. have looked it up before I said it.

  65. Yeah, well, I'll tell you what that is. Uh. Dwell

  66. is hard, yeah, because it's not a word that we

  67. use in vocabulary anyway. Yeah, like I don't. I don't

  68. say dwell except for when I read the Bible. I think, yep,

  69. that's funny. Okay, yeah, let's go to the next one.

  70. This one should be easy, I think. So you know

  71. those old watches that people would use now they they

  72. would used to tell time, think, oh during Greece.

  73. Yeah, yeah, you're thinking of with the shadows?

  74. That was it? Shadow? What I was thinking of that?

  75. I was thinking at the actual struggle. What is that

  76. watch called?

  77. I don't know what the name of it is, but

  78. the one it kind of shows normally it's not a watch,

  79. but it's like a device that kind of shows. I

  80. can't think of the name for it.

  81. And I said shadow. That's hilarious.

  82. But shadow, that's that's number two.

  83. Okay, we forgot to say what couldn't you say in

  84. the first one.

  85. I couldn't on the for the first one, for Dwell,

  86. I couldn't say live, home, house, reside, or abode. For shadow,

  87. I couldn't say dark, light, shade, sun image. Okay, okay,

  88. So the next one.

  89. Stream stream, river, I.

  90. Nope, stream a Norwegian fjord.

  91. I don't even know what you just said. I don't

  92. even know what you just said. A river stream, uh.

  93. The bottom of a fjord. And so think of Norway.

  94. If a boat was going to dock in Norway, you

  95. would go into a fjord, to a bay and to

  96. a well, what's the bottom of the fjord? Oh, my goodness,

  97. it would be.

  98. This is the hardest we've ever done, ever had.

  99. See, this isn't accurate. When I was going to say,

  100. think of the Suez Canal, but this, that's not accurate

  101. for what I'm trying to But you get the concept

  102. the Suez Canal like.

  103. A channel.

  104. It's it's it's yep, you're yeah, yeah, I give let's

  105. just let's valley valley. I was trying to get where

  106. something's on both sides. So a fjord is just kind

  107. of like a you know how the coast of Norway is.

  108. It has those huge dips in there and you can

  109. kind of go into the fjord.

  110. I would have just said the something of the Shadow

  111. of Death.

  112. But could I oh yeah, I could have. Yeah, I

  113. could have said that one.

  114. Couldn't you say about valley Hill.

  115. Mountain, lily down river. So I was trying to think

  116. fjord like the bottom of the fjord. You no, you

  117. said river? Yeah, you said river? Yeah, all right.

  118. Grazing sheep field, super close field, grass meadow.

  119. Super close. Uh, it's in a way this is not it,

  120. but in a way, it's something that you do to milk.

  121. Like if you milk the cow and got the milk,

  122. you probably wouldn't just drink the milk.

  123. You would harvest the milk.

  124. What to the milk?

  125. You would pasturize?

  126. Yes, pastor, I was like, what kind?

  127. Okay? Okay, okay.

  128. And the last one this ties directly into and all

  129. of these tied directly into the scripture for today. The

  130. last one is and for pastor, I couldn't say filled cow, green,

  131. metal or new. That was pastor. Okay. So for the

  132. next one, someone that carries a big stick.

  133. Shepherd.

  134. Yep, you got it. That was the easiest way I

  135. could think of for that one.

  136. Yeah, it's called a sun dial. That's what it is, Okay, sundial,

  137. Yeah she is. That should have been easy, right.

  138. Yeah. Now, Chris, you're going to make me do this

  139. live right here, because I'm going to look up that

  140. word because I want to know what the meaning is.

  141. Well, you do that and I will.

  142. And that is incorrect. I think I gave a word.

  143. Oh no, yeah, it is treated a specific country as

  144. a permanent home. So the Tenant is domiciled in the US.

  145. So I was close. I was in the ballpark, okayah, okay,

  146. I just wanted to verify that I didn't say something bad.

  147. And everyone's like, right.

  148. Right, okay, So let's move on to the scriptures. That

  149. was interesting. Yeah, it was a very hard thank you desiree.

  150. But it all ties in.

  151. Yes, it all does because we're pausing from the story

  152. of David right before Dave and Goliath. Yeah, because David

  153. wrote Psalm chapter twenty three. So let's read the six

  154. verses and let's dive right into it.

  155. Yeah. Psalm's twenty three says, the Lord is my shepherd.

  156. I have all that I need. He lets me rest

  157. in green metals. He leads me beside peaceful streams. He

  158. renews my strength. He guides me along right paths, bringing

  159. honor to his name. Even when I walk through the

  160. darkest valley, I would not be afraid, for you are

  161. close beside me, your roding, your staff protect and comfort me.

  162. You prepare a feast for me in the presence of

  163. my enemies. You honor me by anointing my head with oil.

  164. My cup overflows with blessings. Surely, your goodness and unfailing

  165. love will pursue me all the days of my life,

  166. and I will live in the House of the Lord forever.

  167. As I'm reading this, I keep wanting to flip to

  168. King James version, I will dwell in the House of

  169. the Lord forever.

  170. Right. Yeah, So, you know, it's interesting this is this

  171. is probably my it's it's my far my favorite psalm.

  172. Probably one of the most known for psalms Bush.

  173. Yeah, and it's read at funerals. But what's interesting about

  174. it is is that you know, we read it at

  175. funerals because you know, there's postcard images of you know,

  176. resting in green meadows and peaceful streams and then dwelling

  177. in the House of the Lord forever, and you know,

  178. and it also mentions the value of the show of death.

  179. But yet, if you really think about the meaning behind

  180. this parable, it's not really meant for funerals at all.

  181. I mean, not even close. It's actually a psalm of

  182. dependence because we have to understand that sheep are the

  183. most dependent animal that exists in the world today. In

  184. the Western world, there's not many shepherds like you know,

  185. if I was, if I was to ask all the

  186. people in the United States, who's a shepherd? There wouldn't

  187. be too many, right, Yeah, maybe.

  188. Up in the northern part of the US maybe, or

  189. you know, like you know, Montana, the Dakota's or something.

  190. But but anybody who's living in David's time, they understood

  191. very intricately the relationship between a shepherd and sheep. So

  192. in the first verse when it says the Lord is

  193. my shepherd, I have all that I need.

  194. Maybe just back up, what is a shepherd? Oh? Yeah,

  195. so just like step one, just so people understand.

  196. Yeah, shepherd is the one who sits out with the sheep,

  197. and he not only protects them, but honestly, they depend

  198. upon the shepherd for protection. He protects them from wolves

  199. and bears and lions, for guidance. He guides the sheep

  200. a lot of times. You know what they'll do is

  201. if you stay in one place too long, you could

  202. actually graze a place to death and it'll be gone

  203. for years. So you can't overgraze a certain spot.

  204. Which is why they typically move from spot to spot

  205. to spot.

  206. That's right. So I read one time A Shepherd's Guide

  207. to sal chapter twenty three that talked about how sometimes

  208. in really barren areas and especially the northern part of Israel,

  209. they would actually sometimes leave their house, their permanent dwelling,

  210. and they would go on sometimes for six months. The

  211. shepherd would be gone with the sheep, just because it

  212. took that long to find places to graze that come

  213. all the way back to where, you know, to where

  214. you can actually re use the field that you started with.

  215. So it's really interesting. So when it says the Lord

  216. is my shepherd, I have all that I need, it

  217. means that you know, there's no scarcity at all. Right,

  218. And and you know sometimes when you see a sheep

  219. and it has it's tagged or branded, you'll know the

  220. quality of that sheep is a direct reflection on who

  221. owns that sheep. Right, So if you belong to the shepherd,

  222. then your chances are you're one of the sheep that

  223. you see in the middle of the field that are healthy,

  224. that are balanced, that are clean, that are not you know,

  225. flea ridden or not ridden. Right. So even the opening

  226. statement says, hey, my branding says I belong to the Lord.

  227. I'm going to be a sheep that is well provided for, Right,

  228. do you actually know the meaning behind he lets me

  229. rest in green meadows.

  230. Yeah, no, you got to explain that.

  231. Did you know that sheep have to chew their cud,

  232. and sheep cannot stand and chew their cut, so the

  233. shepherd has to force them to actually lay down to

  234. chew their cut. And that's the way that the digest.

  235. And so when it says he makes me lay down

  236. in green meadows, it's not a it's not a postcard image.

  237. It is actually a purposeful image. It is it is

  238. saying that, like, the shepherd knows what's best for the sheep,

  239. even though the sheep may not know, right, So so

  240. the shepherd has to sometimes force them because left to

  241. their own devices, sheep may not lay down because they're

  242. that dumb. They really are that dumb, the dumbest animal

  243. that exists, right, So the shepherd has to force them

  244. to lie down. In other words, the shepherd knows what's

  245. best for them, even if the sheep don't know, so

  246. he lets me rest in green meadows. This one is

  247. actually common sense. He leaves, he leads me besides peaceful streams,

  248. you know.

  249. That, Chris, just to back up really quick. In the

  250. King James version, it uses the word mate.

  251. Yeah, that's right. He makes me lie down.

  252. Which is more in line with what you're saying right now.

  253. Right right, He forces me to lie down. Yeah, that's

  254. that's what That's what the shepherd will do. He leads

  255. me beside peaceful dreams. Did you know that shepherd sheep

  256. are very poor swimmers and they're really just giant sponges.

  257. Yeah, which makes sense, and so sheep.

  258. Are definitely afraid of water. And so when it says

  259. he leads me besides people's peaceful streams, even a shepherd

  260. today will tell you that they'll get the crook of

  261. their staff and then what they'll do is they'll use

  262. it to divert water from a running uh you know,

  263. stream to a stagnant pool, just so they can drink,

  264. just so they could drink. Because sheep are deathly afraid

  265. of going near running water because if they fall in,

  266. they're gone. So the shepherd will actually you know, uh,

  267. you know, create a peaceful bed of water for them

  268. with the cook of their staff.

  269. Chris, something that I get out of this that you

  270. mentioned the fact that they graze and they have to

  271. go from spot to spot. I think there's a message

  272. in that. Oftentimes I think we as God's creation. We

  273. get comfortable on whatever step that we're in and we

  274. just want to stay there and we want to run

  275. it into the ground. And God may be telling you, hey,

  276. it's time for you to move on and go to

  277. the next spot. That's why you're so uncomfortable here. That's

  278. why you're struggling in that spot or at that level.

  279. You were supposed to move last year, move on to

  280. the next spot, but you're stuck on this step. That's

  281. why it's so difficult in this place.

  282. Because this is the field I know. Yeah, this is

  283. the field. I'm comfortable.

  284. I know all the spots. It's comfy. I know it

  285. like the back of my hand. So I'm just going

  286. to stay here. And God is like, that's why it's

  287. no longer fruitful for you. I intended for you to

  288. move on like three months ago.

  289. Yeah, God calls oftentimes God calls us to the next thing. Yeah, yeah,

  290. that's really good. That's a great point when it says

  291. he renews my strength. Actually, believe it or not. Emotional

  292. support is actually a huge part of sheep, which is why,

  293. by the way Jesus says in John chapter or whatever

  294. it is, like thirteen or something, where Jesus says, the

  295. sheep know my voice, right, because sheep will actually shiver

  296. and terror hearing a stranger's voice. But you know, sometimes

  297. when they bring a sheep back into the pen, the

  298. shepherd will actually have to speak so that the sheep

  299. will calm down. You know, he renews my strength. Only

  300. the shepherd has the power to, you know, calm a

  301. sheep down through the midst of just about anything. He

  302. guides me along the right paths. Well, that's what the

  303. shepherd does, right. You know, left alone as sheep will

  304. go on the wrong path, the shepherd guides them in

  305. their journey.

  306. Now, Chris, let's back up for just a quick second.

  307. You spoke about that the sheep would know the voice

  308. of the shepherd. Yeah, how would the shepherd And there's

  309. a point to this. How would the sheep know the

  310. shepherd's voice.

  311. They hear him. They spend time with them every day.

  312. So spending time with the shepherd every day is the

  313. key to knowing what the shepherd wants you to do.

  314. That's right.

  315. So that's the I think the important point with us

  316. and God. A lot of people think I need guidance,

  317. I need direction, I know which way to go. Have

  318. you been spending time with the shepherd. The shepherd will

  319. tell you in his word whether to go left or

  320. right or what to do.

  321. But if we don't, if we don't know how to

  322. hear God's voice, that's when we offer for God give

  323. me a sign.

  324. Yeah right, yeah, that's because.

  325. We're like, just show me something crystal clear. Yeah, you know,

  326. let me throw out the parameters God. Right, that's interesting.

  327. And then when it says, even when I walk through

  328. the darkest valley and the King James says, you know,

  329. we're all familiar with the valley of the Shadow of Death,

  330. it says, I would not be afraid because you are

  331. close beside me, You're road and your staff protecting comfort me.

  332. You think about this. Did you know that the valleys

  333. are where the water is, so the water.

  334. Always very fertile.

  335. Yes, in the valley the water goes to the lowest point.

  336. And if you ever are in Israel, ever, especially in

  337. the northern park, because the green has more the southern

  338. part has more greenery, but the northern part is very rocky,

  339. and so you have to go down to the valley.

  340. But guess what where the where the water is or

  341. where the wolves are right, because why wouldn't the wolves

  342. be there.

  343. Yeah, they're going to congregate wherever the is.

  344. And so when you walk down to the darkest valley

  345. or the value of the shot of death, it means

  346. that you're, as a shepherd, probably walking a flock of

  347. sheep in between like two cliffs where wolves can be

  348. waiting ready to pounce, right, and and and you're and

  349. you're guiding your sheep down there to drink where the

  350. grass is and everything else. Uh, and then what does

  351. a shepherd have to do? A shepherd has to protect

  352. the flock from all enemies, which means that's where you're

  353. wrought and your staff come in, right, these are weapons.

  354. And so you know, think about a sheep, a sheep

  355. left alone to its own devices. Uh, you know, without

  356. a shepherd, would would be so unbelievably afraid to go down,

  357. uh you know, to get water. But you know, with

  358. God there, it's it's really it's a it's a verse

  359. about protection, that's what it is.

  360. Now. I've heard a preacher say this before a long

  361. time ago, using symbolism here, saying the shepherd, the rod,

  362. and the staff are symbolic of the father, the son,

  363. and the holy Spirit. Oh yeah, I've heard someone say

  364. that a long time ago.

  365. Yeah, yeah, I could. I could definitely see that, Yeah

  366. for sure, because one guides, one disciplines, Yeah, all these

  367. kinds of thing. Yeah, that's really good. And then when

  368. it says you prepare a feech for me in the

  369. presence of.

  370. My enemies, Yeah, I love that verse.

  371. Did you know that on a Shepherd's This this book

  372. that I read, A Shepherd's Guide to Psalm chapter twenty

  373. three talked about how every single verse talks about every

  374. aspect of a shepherd caring for the sheep. And one

  375. of the biggest jobs that is mentioned right here is

  376. that actually, if you bring a sheep up to like

  377. a field of clovers or just anything else, the sheep

  378. will eat everything. So what a shepherd has to do

  379. is has to stop the sheep, go up to the

  380. field and literally all the poisonous weeds. Right. And meanwhile,

  381. if it's in the valley, which is where they are

  382. right now, you're talking about in the presence of your enemies. Right.

  383. The enemies could be the weeds, it could be the poison,

  384. but it could also be fighting off wolves while you're

  385. doing it. Right, So in other words, the shepherd constantly

  386. has to look out for the perils of the sheep,

  387. both you know, in the wolves, but also the things

  388. that are harmful for the sheep, and so preparing a table,

  389. you know, for them is literally everything that you know.

  390. Let's just say, if your wife would to prepare a

  391. meal for you, or if you to prepare a meal

  392. for your wife, you would do everything and then present

  393. them you know, breakfast in bed for instance. Right, that's

  394. essentially what the shepherd does for the sheep and says,

  395. I've done all of this, so now all you have

  396. to do is walk up and eat in peace, you know,

  397. because I've taken care of all danger, both in plants

  398. and in animals.

  399. Yeah, that's awesome. Another way that I look at this

  400. is how God essentially wants to show off his creation.

  401. Yeah.

  402. God wants to show us off. So it's like God

  403. is saying, I will prepare a feast. I think of

  404. a big banquet table. Yeah, prepare a feast in front

  405. of you. So it's in front of you, like we're

  406. in front of a table right now. But your enemies

  407. will be forced to have to watch you eat of

  408. the good of the land. Yeah, So I think that's

  409. a powerful one there that has a lot of different

  410. angles you can look at it. But yeah, the fact

  411. that God will put a table before me with a

  412. full spread, and all the people that doubted you, all

  413. the people that talked about you, all the people that

  414. judge you, will have to sit and watch you eat

  415. what God has prepared for you.

  416. Oh that's great, Yeah, that's really great. And then it

  417. says you annoyt my head with oil we think of

  418. you know, you know, you know, for instance, like Samuel

  419. annoying David, which, by the way, that is true.

  420. Yeah right.

  421. But also sheep, you know, they have no tail to

  422. swat away bugs that, you know, usually get in the

  423. crevices of their eyes. Sometimes they'll bang their heads up

  424. against fence posts just to try to get rid of

  425. the bugs that are around them. And a lot of

  426. times they'll have cuts and bruises. And whenever a shepherd

  427. brings in the sheep at the end of the night,

  428. takes out his flask of oil and he rubs it

  429. on the head of the shepherd or excuse me, the

  430. head of the sheep, and he heals the wounds, and

  431. he also emotionally talks to the sheep. And there's a

  432. couple more verses here. My cup overflows with blessings. Do

  433. you know when I went to Israel, I actually stopped

  434. a shepherd on the side of the road traveling from

  435. the north to the south. We stopped and I said,

  436. I want to talk to this shepherd. So we literally

  437. pulled over the bus. I got out and started talking

  438. to him, and I said, is it true that every

  439. shepherd carries a cup? And you know they carry a

  440. flask of oil, they carry a cup even to this day.

  441. And sure enough, he pulls back his robe and he's

  442. got a cup and he says, he says, well, this

  443. cup is used for administering medicine. So a lot of times,

  444. if I take my flock of sheep and I go

  445. for six months, I'll take just enough medicine with me,

  446. and so if there's a sheep that gets sick, I'll

  447. have to ration because I have no idea how much

  448. I'm going to have for my journey. So I'll give

  449. the minimum amount of medicine. Put it in my cup,

  450. because this is the cup that the sheep are used

  451. to drinking out of, because otherwise, how do you administer

  452. anything to the sheep.

  453. Right.

  454. And so when it says my cup overflows with blessings,

  455. what it's saying is, you know, when when you're, when

  456. you're a part of God's care, under God's care, God

  457. doesn't ration anything, right, my cup overflows with everything. Right,

  458. So whatever the cup has to you know, whether whether

  459. the cup holds water, whether the coup hold's medicine, whatever

  460. the cup has to have, it overflows.

  461. Right.

  462. And then and then it says, surely your goodness and

  463. unfilling level pursuing me all the days of my life,

  464. I will live in the house of the Lord forever.

  465. Is a is the statement about when you're when you

  466. belong to God's care and you depend upon God for everything,

  467. for protection, for emotional support, for provision for uh, you know,

  468. for guidance for all of those things, then you will

  469. have blessing and goodness and you will be with God

  470. forever and and and that is that is our that

  471. is our our confidence, that is our joy, right, that

  472. is our hope, that is where we find our peace

  473. in right.

  474. Yeah, that's awesome.

  475. Yeah, it's really interesting, isn't it.

  476. Yeah. I think we could keep going with this. There's

  477. a lot in there, but I think we're out of time.

  478. Ye, out of time. So hey, there's a lot in

  479. those six verses. So anyway, uh that there it is.

  480. So we have to end our time right now. I

  481. want to say more, but I can't. So that is

  482. our time and we will see you hopefully next time

  483. on the Bible. Guys.

  484. H
