  1. You're listening to the Bible Guys, a podcast where a

  2. couple of friends talk about the Bible in fun, in

  3. practical ways. Hey, well, good morning, good afternoon, good evening

  4. whenever you're tuning in, and welcome to the Bible Guys.

  5. I'm Jeff and that's my cue to say, I'm Chris.

  6. There you go. We got it in there.

  7. Yes, and today we are kicking off with a brand

  8. new segment for this week called Stump the.

  9. Pastor brand new segment for this week. Yeah, that's the

  10. second day of the week.

  11. I started to say brand new segment. I did not recover.

  12. Okay, it's brand new for this week, brand new for

  13. this week. We've done it forty times, but yeast. So

  14. this is a good one. This one's from Karen h.

  15. By the way, So hi Karen.

  16. Hey, what's up Karen?

  17. And she says one of the ten commandments is thou

  18. shalt not kill? Why is there so much killing in

  19. the Bible? Good question. It's a good question, by good question,

  20. very thoughtful.

  21. Yeah.

  22. Well, I mean I just watched with my family really

  23. a movie really yeah, and it was called come on,

  24. What was the Conscientious subjector?

  25. Andrew Garfield in the war, we climbs up the wall.

  26. I don't know, dude, you would love this movie. I know,

  27. I know you. This is a movie you would actually love.

  28. Hats all rich.

  29. Yeah, but anyway, it was it was sort of the

  30. same thing. It was sort of the same thing. He

  31. was a conscientious objector who joined the war World War two.

  32. This is a true story. But he wouldn't touch a

  33. gun because he said, I'm.

  34. Not supposed to kill.

  35. It's not supposed kill you.

  36. Okay, So what's the answer.

  37. Well, the answer is sin, wickedness, rebellion.

  38. Killing exists because of sin.

  39. Well, for sure it does.

  40. But the uh, I think it's because God gives an

  41. initiative to those who serve him, and it's it's warnings

  42. against you know, his his invitation. His rule is judgment

  43. when people are wicked and they serve false gods and

  44. God is passing his judgment. It's the same judgment, by

  45. the way, I think that would be given to us,

  46. except for the fact that Jesus died in our place.

  47. Yeah, so good answer. By the way, there's multiple kinds

  48. of killing in the Bible. So I think you first

  49. have to go to the law thou shalt not kill.

  50. The Roman or the Hebrew word there means murder seems

  51. to specifically mean premeditated right murder. So there's a difference

  52. between you know, hitting somebody with your car accidentally and

  53. murdering somebody because you hate them, right, planning the death

  54. of this assassination of this person. So that'd be the

  55. first thing. The word thou shalt not kill, That word

  56. kill leans towards premeditated murder, don't murder as opposed to

  57. there's a dozen times in the Old Testament where God

  58. sets up the death penalty for certain behaviors in society.

  59. So you have to remember that the Ten Commandments are

  60. not governmental laws for the government or for society. They're

  61. for individuals. You don't lie, you keep the sabbath, You

  62. don't commit adultery, right, you don't commit murder. That's it.

  63. But then God sets up within the government there are

  64. consequences for bad behaviors. If somebody does murder somebody, then

  65. God sets up the death penalties to say, an eye

  66. for an eye, tooth for truth, a life for a

  67. life right. So then the government is supposed to take

  68. the life of the person who who committed murder for instance,

  69. or whatever so God sets up this what we would

  70. say is killing to kill this person that is a

  71. horrific criminal. God says, execute them. And so in that situation,

  72. that's not premeditated murder, that's executing judgment for evil behavior.

  73. There's a difference, right, So God, God uses governments to

  74. execute judgment, and that then is and God says they

  75. represent him when they do it. So there's a difference

  76. between you committing murder and the government executing judgment. That'd

  77. be one. The other one is sometimes God used the

  78. people of Israel as tools of his justice, bringing judgment

  79. on other nations, and so he would send them in

  80. and go, hey, I want you to bring judgment on Itedom,

  81. or I want you to bring judgment on the Amalekites

  82. or on the Mobibites or whatever.

  83. Right, which is where we are right now?

  84. Right, that's right, And the other one would be then

  85. God also allows, and he says it in the law

  86. self defense, if somebody breaks into your house in the

  87. middle of the night and you struggle and the guy dies,

  88. well then you're free.

  89. Right.

  90. So when you're defending your property, when you're defending yourself,

  91. when you're defending your family, if the other person dies

  92. as a result of you trying to protect your family,

  93. then God says you're free from that, so he allows

  94. the idea that's not premeditative murder, although somebody dies, right,

  95. so he allows that. And then obviously when Cain killed Abel,

  96. that's just evil, that's just sin that rose up. And

  97. God's just telling the story without blinking. He's letting us know, Hey,

  98. this is the reality humanity. So there's there's multiple kinds

  99. of killing in the Bible. Some of it is justice,

  100. some of it is self defense. And but what God

  101. forbids you and me is for us to just willfully

  102. go and commit murder. Right, that'd be the difference between

  103. those things.

  104. That's great. Yeah, yeah, and that's a great question.

  105. And thank you. What's your name, Karen, right, Yeah, Karen's

  106. the one that wrote in. Yeah, thank you Karen for

  107. writing in.

  108. So that's a hard one. That is a really tough one.

  109. I agree.

  110. So, Karen, you as as a citizen, a private citizen,

  111. there is no real situation other than self defense. There

  112. is no situations justifiable in the Bible for you to

  113. kill somebody. If you became the governor and your state

  114. permitted the death penalty, it's not a sin for you

  115. to execute judgment on somebody who did evil and qualifies

  116. for the death penalty. That does make sense. So as

  117. a tool of the government, as a tool of the people,

  118. that's different than the individual choosing murder, and that it's

  119. really really hard to separate the two. But if you can,

  120. then that's why the Bible allows it in some instances,

  121. but forbids it for individuals, right.

  122. And it's also the reason why we witness both ends.

  123. Right. We witnessed that shot and not kill, and then

  124. we also witnessed, you know, battling and killing Philistines left

  125. and right, right, right, So.

  126. It's self defense for one, because the Philistines were raiders.

  127. And two it was of God from are using the

  128. people of Israel to do that and God to do that.

  129. Which is how I initially responded, Yep, that's great, good job.

  130. All right.

  131. Well, hey, Psalm chapter one is where we are today,

  132. which we're like, how crazy is that that we're in

  133. the middle of this David and Goliath story, in the

  134. middle of Samuel, the Book of Samuel, and all of

  135. a sudden we're just taking a break and we're jumping

  136. to Psalm one.

  137. Why is that, Jeff.

  138. So we don't know when the book when Psalm one

  139. was written, but we do know lots of Psalms were

  140. written in the early part of David's life, and so

  141. we just we're going to grab this one and say, hey,

  142. here's a theme from a time in David's life when

  143. he was really walking with God, when he had a

  144. great desire to serve God. And so we just want

  145. to introduce the psalms. And then now throughout the stories

  146. of David and the Kings, we're going to pepper several

  147. of the Psalms into the stories of David, and then

  148. you know, eventually we get the Salomon will pepper in

  149. some of the proverbs as well in spots where they

  150. kind of naturally.

  151. So Psalm one, because we're doing this chronologically.

  152. That's correct. So someone, you know, we don't know at

  153. what point this would land, but it's a good one

  154. to start with.

  155. Yeah, and it's only six verses.

  156. Yeah, so we get to talk for ten minutes perverse.

  157. That's nice. No, spoken like a true preacher.

  158. Okay, So here's Psalm chapter one and says, Oh the

  159. joys of those who do not follow the advice of

  160. the wicked or stand around with sinners, or join in

  161. with mockers. But they delight in the law of the Lord,

  162. meditating on it day and night. They're like trees planted

  163. along the river bank, bearing fruit each season. Their leaves

  164. never wither, and they prosper in all they do. But

  165. not the wicked. They're like worthless chaffs scattered by the wind.

  166. They'll be condemned at the time of judgment. Sinners will

  167. have no place among the godly, for the Lord watches

  168. over the path of the godly, but the path of

  169. the wicked leads to destruction. Well, yeah, this is really

  170. consistent with what he just did in this victory he had.

  171. He saw that battle as being very black and white,

  172. either your for good or against God. And hey, the

  173. ones for God are going to win. The one against

  174. God's going to lose.

  175. Right. You know what I love about God's creation is

  176. that it represents life. And well, I mean, it doesn't

  177. represent life, it is life, but it represents our lives.

  178. Right, It's it's the it's the same.

  179. This reminds me of the same thing where Jesus said, Okay,

  180. I'm the vine, you're the branch, and literally they're walking

  181. through a vineyard when he teaches that that was actually

  182. the last lesson that he gave before he went to

  183. the garden Againstemine and uh and Jesus, you know, is

  184. literally pointing to a vine and he's saying, do you

  185. see the way this vine grows? And do you see

  186. that this branch right here? And see how the branch

  187. is thriving and how it has fruit on it. You know,

  188. I am the vine, I'm the source of life, and

  189. you're the branch. But guess what, there's a branch on

  190. the ground. Everybody look at it. That's the same kind

  191. of branch. But guess what, it's not connected to the vine,

  192. and there's no fruit on it. That's you, if you're

  193. disconnected to me.

  194. And people are like, oh, why, Well, because everybody grew grapes.

  195. Everybody understood, they planted trees, They understood agriculture way more

  196. than the average person in the western world today. And

  197. so here's David, you know, and I could even imagine, uh,

  198. you know, maybe perhaps him writing this psalm underneath a

  199. tree right planted by the rivers of water.

  200. You know, think about a field.

  201. You know, you know, you've seen old movies, right Westerns

  202. and such where you know, they're traveling through the desert

  203. and you know, they're parts and looking for a well

  204. or something like this, and they finally come across a stream.

  205. And then what grows right next to all the streams,

  206. all the trees. You know, they're lush and they're green

  207. because water is life and and that's you know, I

  208. could just picture, you know, in the old dusty, you

  209. know sections of Israel where David is, you know, taking

  210. his sheep and he's wandering from field to field, and

  211. you know, and he has to plan those things. And

  212. sometimes when shepherds would take their sheep, sometimes they would

  213. go on to pilgrimage because because there, you know, the

  214. grass was so scarce, they'd have to take their sheep. Yes,

  215. I remember reading one shepherd's book that talked about how

  216. sometimes in the really uh you know, barren parts of Israel,

  217. they would have to go on a journey that took

  218. a year, and they were they they have to. They

  219. had they couldn't overgraze a field because if they overgrazed it,

  220. it would die and it would be gone for years.

  221. And so every shepherd had an understanding that you don't

  222. overgraze so you have to move on.

  223. You have to move quickly with sheep because sheep reached out,

  224. so cows clip off the tops of the grass, so

  225. to horses. Donkeys clip the tops of the grass. But

  226. sheep will pull the roots up and then the grass

  227. won't go back, so they have to move quickly. With sheep.

  228. You can't stay in the same place for months at

  229. a time. They'll go right down and they'll start pulling

  230. the dirt up right Whereas the cows and the horses,

  231. you just move them from field to field and back again,

  232. because they're not tearing up the roots, but the sheep do.

  233. And we see that by the way. Big Ben National

  234. Park in the boot heel of Texas. Yeah, used to

  235. have a lot of natural grasses, but it's a desert environment,

  236. so the natural grasses don't come back quickly. And when

  237. they brought cattle through it would be fine, but a

  238. bunch of sheep herders back in the early twentieth century

  239. came in and totally obliterated the grass has never come back.

  240. See isn't it crazy?

  241. It's crazy enough to where it just that story. That

  242. explanation is a reminder how we don't necessarily understand all

  243. the nuances of the salts. We don't understand the word pictures, right,

  244. and so here it is. I think it's not just oh,

  245. you know, if we're near God, God's the source of life.

  246. God's like the river, then we're gonna like a tree,

  247. We're gonna be prosperous. Well, those are great conclusions. It's

  248. pretty evident that's what he means. But what we don't

  249. understand are perhaps the implications of what it means not

  250. to be by the rivers, right, like like just this

  251. just a picture. God creates his beautiful creation, and then

  252. he points to it and says, this is how we are. This,

  253. this lesson, this object lesson represents your life. I just

  254. think it's an incredible thing. So I pictured David as

  255. a shepherd, perhaps sitting underneath a tree, you know, thinking

  256. about man, this oasis is is just like what it

  257. you know, what it is to love God. We we

  258. we we go to God and it's like and it's

  259. like we are equipped to produce fruit. We have we're strong,

  260. we're nourished where you know, there's there's water for our roots, right,

  261. all those things.

  262. So he often writes with this very binary worldview. Either

  263. you're serving God you're not though those are the only

  264. two options. There's no middle ground. There's I'm trying to

  265. serve God. I'm kind of you know, I want to

  266. be a good Christian. But whatever, right he sees it.

  267. Either you're choosing to walk with God or you're not

  268. walking with God. Those are the two things. Partial obedience

  269. is disobedience, and that's how he views it. So there's

  270. the joys of those who follow who do not follow

  271. the advice of the wicked, the ones who don't stand

  272. around with sinners, the ones who don't join in their mockery,

  273. which the mockery a lot of times, it doesn't have

  274. to be overt it can just be a total indifference

  275. to God's way, right if you look at that original word.

  276. But instead they're delighting in God's laws and they're meditating

  277. on it day and night. This is one of the

  278. reasons why we, hey, we always commend our listeners. You're

  279. choosing to spend a little bit of time contemplating God's

  280. word every day, and it's that kind of thing. It's

  281. in your mind now. Now the Holy Spirit has something

  282. to bring up and to keep it, and that's what

  283. he's talking about you're meditating on it, you're thinking about it,

  284. you're taking more of God's word in on a regular basis.

  285. So he says, there's delight for those that choose to

  286. look into God's ways. And then the next one he says,

  287. but that's not the way it is for the wicked.

  288. So the ones who who spend time in God's word

  289. and then choose to live God's way, you're gonna thrive.

  290. Blessing comes from that. And then he says the other side,

  291. that's not that way for the wicked. He says, they're

  292. like worthless chaff scattered by the wind. Do you ever

  293. sometimes when you're done with the popcorn, do you ever

  294. just grab a couple of seeds and chew on the

  295. seeds or whatever.

  296. I don't chill on them, but I do sort of

  297. mess with them when you're done with popcorn?

  298. Do you ever have like some of that that the

  299. outer skin of the seeds stuck in your teeth all

  300. the time, to the point where I get obsessed with it,

  301. Like it's almost I can't think anything else if I've

  302. got to, especially if it's up near the gum line.

  303. You can feel your gums starting to swell a little bit.

  304. It's uncomfortable. It's all you can think about. You're right,

  305. you got this. So that's the chaff of the of

  306. the the corn. The corn sit kernel is that outer skin,

  307. and it's absolutely useless. So for them, again, like you

  308. were saying, you know, with regard to shepherds, with regard

  309. to vineyards or whatever, they understood that maybe even better

  310. than us, because we don't. That outer skin is the

  311. chaff of wheat. And if they would plant a whole

  312. field of wheat, and they would spend days and days

  313. and days just getting the chaff, beating the chaff off

  314. of the kernels of wheat in order to because it

  315. was totally useless in their minds, there was no benefit.

  316. You couldn't get the nutritional value of the wheat unless

  317. you got rid of the chaff. And then it's just

  318. an irritant. It's just a problem. It would make a mess,

  319. and so it would just be blown away in the wind.

  320. And God says, listen, it's the same way. The wicked

  321. are like that. They're an irritant, they're useless, they have

  322. no real value apart from so our value is in God.

  323. And then he causes us to thrive when we choose

  324. to put our roots down into His word. But if

  325. you don't do that, then there's a uselessness to it.

  326. And then he said, ultimately there's judgment that comes as

  327. a result of that. And so David is very binary.

  328. Either you're for God or against the And the proof

  329. is what are you doing with God's word? Are you

  330. taking it in, meditating on and applying it or are

  331. you just you know, standing around with sinners, living living

  332. like everybody else lives.

  333. Right? You know, have you ever? Have you ever? I

  334. know you have?

  335. This is just sort of you know, what do you

  336. call it? Like a lobbing a softball?

  337. Right?

  338. Have you ever been in a situation where immediately God,

  339. it's almost like the Holy Spirit recalls a verse that

  340. you know that applies to that situation.

  341. Like I remember just first becoming a Christian.

  342. Right. So we worked at the Canfield Fair, you know

  343. there's a big fair at home and me my best

  344. buddy Jeff. We were working at a couple of different

  345. booths and we had a walkie talkie back and forth.

  346. We're working for some lady who hired us and I

  347. was selling ho giz, he was selling French fries. Well,

  348. back then there was no cash register. It was just

  349. a wooden drawer.

  350. We'd open up, we'd deal with cash.

  351. Well, that's very tempting for a teenager who you know,

  352. is around a bunch of cash and doesn't have a

  353. lot of money growing up poor, and you're around hundreds

  354. and hundreds of dollars. Well, come to find out, this

  355. lady later on told me that she expected teenagers to

  356. steal from them because they always did. So here am I.

  357. You know, I'm tempted with all this cash. Well, Jeff's

  358. over there too, and we're all by ourselves. Well, he

  359. gets on the walkie talkie and he he and he

  360. says to me, He's like, you know, granted, I'm not kidding.

  361. We just started going to church, right, we just became Christians.

  362. I bet you he was a Christian like a month

  363. and I was a Christian a couple months before that.

  364. And you know, he gets on the walkie talkie and

  365. he goes and he goes, God is tempting me. God

  366. is tempting me. He goes, I know this is a

  367. test from God. This is what God's doing. He's tempting

  368. me because all this money. And I said, wait a minute,

  369. I said, I literally just read because I was in

  370. my booth and I had a pocket New Testament, and

  371. I said, I just read somewhere.

  372. I don't even know where it is, but it was in.

  373. The Book of James where it says, don't say that

  374. God tempt you, because God does not tempt any man.

  375. But when a man is tempted, he is enticed and

  376. drawn away from sin, right. And then sin, when it

  377. is produced, it brings death, you know, and all these

  378. kinds of things. And so I just remember going, wait, wait,

  379. I know, I know that I know something here. I'm like,

  380. don't blame God for your temptation. Your temptation is coming

  381. from from from your own lust and from your own sin.

  382. I'm like, God isn't doing this, but here's what he says.

  383. He says, if you give an a temptation, it's going

  384. to lead to bad things.

  385. And so we agreed not to steal because God brought

  386. to mind something that I had read, right, And so

  387. that's really what you're saying. You're saying, if you re

  388. if you put yourself around God's verses, God's words, that

  389. he's going.

  390. To recall and and you're going to be able.

  391. To meditate, especially in the times when it, you know,

  392. will help you choose the right paths.

  393. I was just in the Middle East, Jordan, in Egypt,

  394. and you're driving across open desert. At one point we

  395. drove for about four hours across the Sahara Desert and

  396. it's just, honestly, I have so much, so many minutes

  397. of just brown. It's just tan as far as you

  398. can see. And then all of a sudden there'd be,

  399. you know, and you see all these little valleys, all

  400. these little spots across the desert, and all of a

  401. sudden there'd be like a whole bunch of trees in

  402. this one spot, and you knew there was a probably

  403. a some kind of a well or a river or

  404. something there and all that. And so for them, they

  405. would have had this very strong sense that most of

  406. the world is desolate. That's what they and then on occasion,

  407. where the water is, that's where life is. And so

  408. God is saying, listen, my words are the water for

  409. your life. And the rest of the world is desolate.

  410. The world has nothing to offer you. And this is

  411. the binary kind of view that he has. Either you're

  412. standing around with the world's view right, the wicked, sinners, mockers,

  413. or you're in the oasis of God's water in your life.

  414. And isn't it weird how we tend to think life

  415. is really out there with all this and the mockers

  416. in the wicked. That's where we think life is. That's

  417. where the party is. We think that's where the fun is.

  418. And David is saying real life is in those valleys,

  419. those little nooks where the water is, and the God's

  420. water will bring life to you. And he ends the

  421. whole thing with So the Lord watches over the path

  422. of the godly. But the path of the wicked leads

  423. to destruction. It's interesting, it's not the circumstances, it's the path.

  424. The path really implies, always implies a choice. The choices

  425. the wicked make lead to destruction. That's a path, the

  426. choices that the godly make. God watches over that path.

  427. God's providing protection and safety and provision for them in

  428. that path, and so we have to choose. We spend

  429. so much more time, quite honestly, in the presence of

  430. the wicked, listening to their advice on news channels, scrolling

  431. through social media. We get tons of the Wicked's advice.

  432. We get tons of the opinions of sinners in our life,

  433. and we have to work really, really, really really hard

  434. to tap into the water of God's word right for

  435. real life.

  436. Don't listen to the voice of Goliath, right, listen to

  437. the promises of God. And then when you and I

  438. memorized this and read read through it as as kids,

  439. it was always the King James.

  440. Version, right, the old English type version.

  441. And I remember the words that they used were walking

  442. in the way of sinners, standing in the what is

  443. the seat of the scornful or something like this, or

  444. sitting in the seat of the scornful.

  445. And anyway it was.

  446. I just remember it was walking, standing, sitting, That's what

  447. it was. And I remember preaching a sermon to our kids,

  448. you know, the youth group at the time, where it

  449. just it seemed like a progression, like you know, the

  450. first picture is you're walking by them, and then the

  451. second picture is now you've stopped and you're sort of

  452. standing among.

  453. Them, you know, where you're not walking by them completely.

  454. And then the third picture is now you're sitting and

  455. joining them, you know, And so it's it's it's this

  456. idea of like.

  457. Walk away, keep walking right, walk by.

  458. So it's really it's really great how there's so many

  459. truth in here that can point to you know, our lives.

  460. So the question is, ultimately, whose voice do you listen

  461. to at the end of the day. Do you listen

  462. to the voices of the world, the voices of the wicked,

  463. the voices of the ungodly, the advice of those who

  464. probably have good advice, just not the right advice, right,

  465. you know, they don't have godly advice. Advice that's you know,

  466. grounded and the promises of God and the truths of

  467. God and the reality of what is versus you know

  468. what we think.

  469. Yeah, is the way, and we need to be judicious

  470. about where we get our advice from. Right, Maybe, just

  471. if you're talking about, hey, what's the best catch up?

  472. Social media is going to be fine. Hey I'm looking

  473. for a deviled egg recipe? Right, social media is fine.

  474. If you're trying to say, how do I rescue my marriage? Yeah,

  475. maybe you need the most godly husband and wife you know, right,

  476. don't don't just do Because if you're trying to figure

  477. out how to raise your children, if you're trying to

  478. figure out how to overcome some hurt or a habit

  479. or a hang up in your life. You need godly

  480. counselors that are out ahead of you. I was just

  481. talking with somebody here recently, a young woman that was

  482. having some struggles, and almost all of her counselors are

  483. her peers, who also aren't living a godly life. And

  484. I said, really, what you need because she doesn't really

  485. have this in her life right now. I said, what

  486. you need is to go find a godly mother within

  487. the church, right because you don't have a god and

  488. mother in your life. She doesn't have a mom at

  489. all right now. And so what you need is you

  490. need to go find a godly mother. And I said,

  491. I know that's weird because it's like two generations from you.

  492. You feel like, right, you're a young woman, and I'm saying, hey,

  493. go find some fifty year old woman that has some experience.

  494. It's been walking with God for a while. It's just

  495. this anchor of godliness, right. She knows what it takes

  496. to get from where you are to where she is,

  497. and that's what you need. But instead you're back out

  498. there with your friends looking for advice. And if you

  499. do what your friends do, you're only going to get

  500. what they get. So go find that godly leader, that

  501. god godly influencer, that godly person like you want to be,

  502. and you need to get advice from them. And I

  503. promise you what's going to happen is that Godly Mother

  504. is going to take your right to God's word. Here's

  505. what God's word tells me. Here's what God's word tells me.

  506. Here's what God's word tells me. Right, that's what's going

  507. to happen, as opposed to your friends going.

  508. Just follow your heart right right right.

  509. There's a big guess between those two things.

  510. I just think that you should be happy. Yes, that's

  511. what God would want.

  512. Right, Yeah, that's anyway. Hey listen, that is our time.

  513. So we're going to continue, probably jumping back into first show.

  514. We're getting back into for Samuel eighteen.

  515. Yep tomorrow, so hopefully we'll see you then. I'm the

  516. Bible Gus
