  1. You're listening to The Bible Guys, a podcast where a

  2. couple of friends talk about the Bible in fun, in

  3. practical ways. Hey, good morning, everybody. We're back. We are

  4. back better than ever. Hopefully. My brain always goes to

  5. than ever. Yeah, the movie in a world where two

  6. Bible guys are sitting in the studio. Okay, that's that's

  7. just a weird way to start there. Better than ever,

  8. that's right, Okay and improved. Hey, well, we have a great, uh,

  9. we have a great Bible Guys session. And actually we're

  10. in the middle of a series called the Milestones of

  11. the Old Testament, where we're walking through the Old Testament chronologically,

  12. and we're at the place where David is running from

  13. King Saul and he feels lonely, right, and he's writing

  14. a bunch of songs. That's correct. But before we do that,

  15. we have a male segment that Desiree has picked out

  16. for us from Marisa L. In this segments called well, oh,

  17. it's called mail bags. You know what. I was actually

  18. pausing because you always say when I say it's from

  19. Melissa Marissa L, I would say, yes, yes, we skip

  20. mail bags. Yes, my bad.

  21. I mean this is their only it's our only segment

  22. that has its own right, that's right. Yeah, so I

  23. was feeling like we were missing it.

  24. Yeah, well, maybe I'm off my game because I started

  25. weird too. So with the whole movie thing, I liked it.

  26. And speaking of movies, how about that segment.

  27. Oh there you go.

  28. Here's great segue. Here here's the mail bag question. Or actually, yes,

  29. it is a question. I love when you guys recommend

  30. new books for me to read. What's a movie or

  31. a book that you think everyone should see or read

  32. at least once? Okay?

  33. Uh, you want to do like three?

  34. Oh yeah, sure, three each? Yeah I do. So if

  35. I'm going to do three, then I definitely have to

  36. throw in my favorite movie because I because I rarely

  37. get to tell why it's my favorite movie.

  38. So if I say favorite movie is The Count of

  39. Monte Cristo, but here's the reason why, Because you have

  40. a man crushed on Jim Caviezel.

  41. Oh no, no, no, wrong, no, no, okay, wrong, okay,

  42. the the uh it contains everything. It's like remember at

  43. the beginning of Princess Bride when he says it has

  44. everything it has fans in fighting Romance, Remember it's sort

  45. of that way. It's Colombo describing this is a kissing book.

  46. So it's me saying like this movie has everything and

  47. and and almost most of all. I say almost because

  48. it's a thread that that is, it starts and begins

  49. with God, and so it's a it's a it's really

  50. a book about faith, but it's like I want to say,

  51. it's almost all about it, but it's really not. It's

  52. like this undertow right, and then it has everything else.

  53. It has all the advents of everything else. I think

  54. it is unbelievable. The story is beautiful, and it has

  55. everything that a guy wants, which is like adventure, and

  56. it's got like you know, like he gets all this

  57. money and then revenge and battling and all these kind

  58. of things plots and intelligent twists and all this kind

  59. of stuff. But I would also say, I'm going to

  60. give you two more answers. I guess I got two more. Okay,

  61. I'm going to do this.

  62. We can go every other one?

  63. Oh yeah, go ahead?

  64. Does that sound good?

  65. I'm off my game today.

  66. Does every other one sound good?

  67. I'm off my game? Go ahead.

  68. Now you're not off your game? It no, you are

  69. on it. You are so excited to pass on this, Yes,

  70. go ahead, wisdom. I was going to say, so, if

  71. you're doing favorites, my favorite books novels of any kind

  72. would be The Lord of the Rings, the Hobbit of

  73. all those things. But I think maybe more approachable if

  74. you haven't read that kind of stuff, because those are

  75. real slogs. You got to really work through them. So

  76. maybe more approachable would be I really loved the Chronicles

  77. and Ournia.

  78. I knew you gonna say bye bye. C. S.

  79. Less which, by the way, they were writing at the

  80. same time. They were inventing that whole genre, and they

  81. were buddies. They met in a pub every week in

  82. a writer's group to talk about how to invent this

  83. this kind of thing. And that's a C. S. Lewis,

  84. I think, is one who led.

  85. J. R. R.

  86. Tolkien to Christ. It's one or the other, whichever one

  87. was Christian first, led the other one to Christ while

  88. they were writing their books.

  89. That awes Okay, all right, here's my second one, and

  90. I'm going had.

  91. A heavy influence on coming to faith.

  92. Yeah, I'm going on a limb on this one. But

  93. she said a movie or book that everyone should see

  94. or read at least once once. Yes, And I'm going

  95. to actually say that everybody should see a classic war movie.

  96. I can't decide whether it should be like Pearl Harbor

  97. or or it should be like Saving Private Ryan. But

  98. I'm gonna go with Saving Private Ryan. And here's the

  99. reason why. Because it seems to me that people have

  100. forgotten the price paid for the American flag. Oh wow,

  101. it seems it seems to me like the value of

  102. patriot patriotisms is almost like somehow something to be embarrassed of.

  103. You know, it seems like on social media in some cases.

  104. And I think this next generation especially, And I'm not

  105. going to get into politics here, but i just want

  106. to say that America is a great country, and if

  107. everybody were to take a moment and watch a movie

  108. like Saving Private Ryan, you could at least walk away

  109. appreciating what has been handed to you, the sacrifice, the

  110. sacrifice may for you.

  111. Wow, that's great, really really good. Okay, I was going

  112. to say the next one. I think of all of

  113. the leadership or business books or self help books or

  114. you know, make yourself better, grab life by the horns

  115. kind of books, I think Stephen Covey's book Seven Habits

  116. of Highly Effective People probably is the one that's had

  117. the biggest impact on me. The seven habits are be proactive,

  118. So do something, man have a predisposition towards action. Don't wait,

  119. you know, do something. Begin with the end in mind.

  120. You always have to try to figure out if I

  121. do this, what's going to happen. That's really important. Not

  122. what you're dreaming would happen, but really knowing what's going

  123. to happen. There's some work involved with that. Putting the

  124. first things first. It's all about priorities, duties, and never conflict.

  125. I think that that's incredibly important and difficult to really master.

  126. And then think win win. Most people are always thinking,

  127. especially in our culture today, that if somebody wins, somebody

  128. else has to lose. Right. I was in a conversation

  129. not long ago with some young young adults and they

  130. were complaining that Elon Musk had just made sixteen billion

  131. dollars that week, and I was like, why is that

  132. a problem, right, right? And they were like, you know,

  133. nobody needs sixty so it don't matter. I said, did

  134. his ability to make sixteen billion dollars affect your ability

  135. to make a thousand right. What he did has no

  136. effect on your ability to do a thing. But we

  137. tend to think zero sum. Somebody wins, somebody else has

  138. to lose, as opposed to or in a negotiation, I

  139. have to dominate you and win, as opposed to working

  140. for a win win. I think that's incredibly important. And

  141. then seek first to understand, then to be understood. Oh

  142. that's great, I think is incredibly important. And then the

  143. idea of synergy combining strengths for teamwork I think is

  144. really important. And then sharpening the saw that means just

  145. keep getting better and better. Those seven habits. I think

  146. if you never read another self helper leadership book, those

  147. seven things could help you just launch you into success.

  148. Agreed. Yeah, And then I'm going to say my last

  149. book is or my last movie. I'm gonna choose a

  150. movie surprise, and it's extremely underrated. But have you ever

  151. seen Castaway with Tom Hanks? Oh? Yeah, yeah, Okay, So

  152. people somehow think that that's a movie about survival on

  153. an island. It's not. It's a movie about somebody.

  154. Who spends his volleyball.

  155. He was, I'm sorry, isn't that what it is? Nosot

  156. it's a movie about someone who needs to take advantage

  157. of the moments that are right in front of him.

  158. It's a movie about time, taking advantage of time because

  159. you know, before you know, he like he couldn't bring

  160. himself to actually say the words to the guy about

  161. his dying wife. And at the end he looks right

  162. in the eye and he's like, I'm so sorry for

  163. the passing of your wife Mary. You can see that

  164. like he's now learned after being on the island for

  165. four years to uh, you know, actually take advantage of

  166. every moment that's in front of him. And then the

  167. end is so unbelievably artistic because it's like the Crossroads.

  168. It ends with him standing there and there's like this

  169. woman that interacts when she drives away, and he looks

  170. and he has and he's faced with a choice, and

  171. so that it fades away and then you realize, wait

  172. a minute, this whole movie is about that. It's so beautiful,

  173. but actually it's just a reminder for you and I

  174. to take advantage of every moment that we've been given.

  175. Okay, wow, And then I would say I have I

  176. have two It depends. I would say, if you only

  177. had one apart from the Bible, one book to really

  178. help you wrap your head around what does it mean

  179. to be a follower of Jesus? Right, I'm not saying

  180. preparing for ministry or whatever, but just what does it

  181. mean to be a follower of Jesus. I think one

  182. of the best books for me personally was Rick Warren's

  183. purpose driven life book. Oh sure, I think it's it's

  184. just a it's a forty day opus on what it

  185. means to be a follower of Jesus. And it starts

  186. off the very first sentence says it's not about you.

  187. So there's that if on the other side you're trying

  188. to figure out, you know, you're struggling with the ideas

  189. of faith. I think Lee Strobel's books, the whole series,

  190. The Case for the Case for Christ, the Case for

  191. the Resurrection, the Case for Creator, they create, Case for

  192. the Real Jesus, all of the least Strobels books, the

  193. Case for They just had a huge impact on me too.

  194. So I slipped in two answers there at the end.

  195. Oh yeah you did, Yeah, great? Where to go?

  196. Well, really good question, Marissa.

  197. That's great And thank you Marsa for even caring about

  198. our opinions and for writing in and we encourage everybody

  199. to give us an email, shoot us a text, a

  200. comment on YouTube, do something where you can interact or

  201. correspond with us so that we can consider perhaps putting

  202. your comment answer questions on future segments.

  203. So King David, well, yeah, he's not King yet. He's

  204. still running from Saul as far as we know. So

  205. the provenance for Psalm twenty seven, what are the exact

  206. circumstances that was written around. We're not exactly sure, nope,

  207. but these are the kinds of psalms. He wrote a

  208. bunch of psalms during the time when he was running

  209. from Saul. That sounds similar to this one, right, and

  210. so so.

  211. This sort of represents a category of psalms.

  212. Yes, because he wrote different. David was really an amazing guy.

  213. So he's a warrior. I mean, he cuts the head

  214. off of the giant. So there's that and the other side,

  215. he's this incredible musician and he writes these psalms. They're

  216. really there's songs that are prayers, the prayers that are

  217. then put to music, and he writes over a hundred

  218. of them, and so he's this artistic warrior he's kind

  219. of this warrior poet kind of a guy.

  220. Do you hear the phrase I'm a lover not a fighter?

  221. Y David was both.

  222. He was both yea, he was both yes and sort

  223. of what we would think of today maybe as a

  224. renaissance man, right, like a da Vinci kind of guy.

  225. He was into science and art and all these kinds

  226. of things. Well, for him it was it was war leadership.

  227. He was a great leader when he finally became king

  228. and then an artist. And so here he is a

  229. teenager pouring out yeah, pouring out his heart to go God,

  230. and really really a beautiful writing. He says this in

  231. Psalm twenty seven. The Lord is my light and my salvation,

  232. So why should I be afraid? The Lord is my fortress,

  233. protecting me from danger? So why should I tremble when

  234. evil people come to devour me? When my enemies and

  235. foes attack me, they will stumble and fall though a

  236. mighty army surrounds me. My heart will not be afraid.

  237. Even if I am attacked, I will remain confident. The

  238. one thing I ask of the Lord, the thing I

  239. seek most, is to live in the House of the

  240. Lord all the days of my life, delighting in the

  241. Lord's perfections and meditating in his temple, For he will

  242. conceal me there when troubles come, and he will hide

  243. me in his sanctuary. He will place me out of

  244. reach on a high rock. Then I will hold my

  245. head high above my enemies who surround me. At his sanctuary.

  246. I will offer sacrifices with shouts of joy, singing and

  247. praising Lord with music. Hear me as I pray, O, Lord,

  248. be merciful and answer me. My heart has heard you say,

  249. come and talk with me, and my heart responds, Lord,

  250. I'm coming. Do not turn your back on me. Do

  251. not reject your servant anger. You've always been my helper.

  252. Don't leave me now. Don't abandon me, Oh God of

  253. my salvation. Even if my father and mother abandoned me.

  254. The Lord will hold me close. Teach me how to live,

  255. Oh Lord, lead me along the right path from my

  256. enemies are waiting for me. Do not let me fall

  257. into their hands, for they accuse me of things I've

  258. never done. With every breath, they've threatened me with violence.

  259. Yet I'm confident I will see the Lord's goodness while

  260. I'm here in the land of the living, wait patiently

  261. for the Lord. Be brave and courageous. Yes, wait patiently

  262. for the Lord. That last part he's writing to himself, right,

  263. it's right the of verse fourteen.

  264. Well, it seems like he starts with a pep talk

  265. to himself, and then he shifts to prayer, a prayer

  266. to the Lord, and then goes back to the pep

  267. talk right at the very end. And you know what,

  268. the pep talk is incredibly inspiring because we need to

  269. remind ourselves of the promises of God. So how can

  270. David be able to say, even though my enemies attack me,

  271. I will not be afraid because the Lord is with me.

  272. And then and he says, you know, even even when

  273. they attack, I'm still going to remain confident. I'm going

  274. to remain strong. The Lord is my fortress. Why should

  275. I be afraid because he's with me? And so, you know,

  276. a mighty army surrounds me. Well, you and I may

  277. never be the what is that the main object of

  278. hunting of an army and a whole army is looking

  279. for him. So I'm trying to say, is like you

  280. may not be the focus of an entire army. Right,

  281. a man hunt a manhunt. Yeah, the focus of a

  282. man hunt. However, you know, you can compare that to

  283. almost anything. It seems like, you know, if you ever

  284. felt like you're at work and it seems like because

  285. the leadership has turned against you all of a sudden,

  286. you know, you've got a bad rap, and all of

  287. a sudden, it's like me against the world at work

  288. for some reason, until you finally nestle your way out

  289. of it, hopefully, or you know, or maybe perhaps a

  290. friend group. Have you ever been on the receiving end

  291. of all of a sudden, like how did how the

  292. world did all these friends turn against me? Or my

  293. reputation at school for students, or you know, perhaps like

  294. an adult friend group, whatever it is. You know, the

  295. army can represent anything from big to small. But you know,

  296. here he is saying, Hey, I'm an island. I'm a

  297. one man band, but I'm not because God is with me.

  298. And if God's with me, I need to pep talk

  299. myself by saying I won't be afraid of anything.

  300. Yeah, yeah, it's great, that's so good. You know. One

  301. thing just really strikes me is and there's a note

  302. for verse seven. But in the Life Application study, Bible

  303. that kind of spurred this thought. This isn't the first

  304. psalm David wrote. Right, So he's not just suddenly going,

  305. oh man, I've got troubles. God help me, help me,

  306. help me. Right, He's he's not suddenly starting a relationship

  307. with God because he's in trouble. He's leaning into a

  308. relationship he's been in in for a long time. So

  309. when he says there in verse four, the one thing

  310. I ask the Lord, the thing I seek the mostes

  311. live in the House of the Lord all the days

  312. of my life, he's not saying to start living in

  313. the house alone.

  314. Oh. He's not about ending, right, He's about faithful n Yeah.

  315. And he's saying, I want every day of my life

  316. to be centered on God in God's ways. I'm not

  317. just suddenly looking for God to be my good luck

  318. charm to get me out of this trouble. I'm not

  319. suddenly looking for somebody to bail me out. He's saying,

  320. when the struggles of life happened, which, by the way,

  321. for every one of us, we have struggles, right, every

  322. one of us. We get bad news, we have hurts happen,

  323. we have betrayals happen. Every one of us have those

  324. things happen. But David's not saying I'm looking for an

  325. answer now. David's leaning into the answer he already found, right,

  326. He's leaning into this relationship that he has with God.

  327. And this is one of the reasons why it's so

  328. important for you to spend time every day in God's Word.

  329. It's why it's so important for you to choose to

  330. share what you're learning in God's Word with other people.

  331. That's why it's so important to invest in godly relationships

  332. and to spend daily time in God's Word like you

  333. are right now with the podcast and and and all

  334. these things. Is that you grow day by day to

  335. day and you just keep filling that reservoir. You just

  336. keep filling that reservoir, and then when the troubles come,

  337. you have something substantial to lean into, right.

  338. Yeah, And so I just told you before that we

  339. started shooting that. By the way, let me let me

  340. say this before I forget Yeah, let me let me

  341. say that in verse number eight. The reason why we

  342. know that David has not just begun his relationship is

  343. because when he prays to the Lord, he says, you

  344. have always been my helper. Yes, You've always been my helper,

  345. That's what he tells gotten right. So there's there's the indicator, right.

  346. There was that verse number nine, verse nine, I've always

  347. been my helper, yep, and so don't leave me.

  348. Now, right. So what I was going to say is

  349. I told you before we started shooting the podcast that

  350. I ran into a couple last night at a restaurant

  351. who just went through a major tragedy, a loss of

  352. a newborn baby, and one of the most difficult things

  353. to ever go through, right in terms of a funeral.

  354. And had they not had a grounded faith before this

  355. tragedy came upon them, how do you think you know

  356. they would react. So I was with a guy, a

  357. friend of mine, and he had met them for the

  358. first time. They had walked, you know, he'd well it

  359. was him. He walked over and he said hi and

  360. recognize both of us and said, hey, you're my pastor.

  361. I was telling my cousin you're my pastor. And so anyway,

  362. we talked for you know, fifteen minutes or so. Anyway,

  363. he leaves and the guy with me looks at me

  364. and says, you do realize the statistic that eighty percent

  365. of marriages do not make it after a tragedy like

  366. that eighty percent. And and yet never in my mind

  367. did I ever doubt that they would make it because

  368. of their faith. Yeah, right, so so you know their

  369. faith is strong. So even when I went in there

  370. and prayed with them at the hospital after right after

  371. it happened, you know, he says, no, he said, we don't.

  372. We don't doubt God. We don't. We don't question him,

  373. We don't. You know, it's more about facing like I

  374. can't believe this has happened to us, and how are

  375. we going to deal with it? But it was just

  376. amazing to me, and that's what that's what sort.

  377. Of came to They have a real anchor. David talks

  378. about this refuge. Right, that's one of the ways you

  379. think of a refuge is is like a fortress on

  380. top of a hill, or a safe harbor that's outside

  381. of the prevailing winds of the storm, those kinds of things.

  382. David uses many of those kind of analogies to talk

  383. about his relationship with God. Right, you're my shield, you're

  384. my refuge, you're my safe harbor, you're my protection, and

  385. it's you know, he like you pointed out there, You've

  386. always been my helper. This is a long term relationshi.

  387. A lot of times people feel like, you know, oh man,

  388. me reading my Bible today, it's just I don't even

  389. want to take in. I don't even want to listen

  390. to what God has to say to I don't want

  391. any of those words. I'm too depressed, I'm struggling or whatever.

  392. But you need to have filled that reservoir every single day.

  393. It matters. You just keep pouring in and pouring in

  394. and pouring in, and then when the storms of life come,

  395. you have a strong refuge, you have a strong anchor.

  396. You've got this rock to high behind. And then I

  397. think it's amazing. So he on the front end, he's saying, God,

  398. it needs to protect me, right. So in verse one,

  399. the Lord is my fortress, protecting me from danger.

  400. Right.

  401. So there's that. At the end, he goes, wait patiently

  402. for the Lord. Be brave and courageous. Yes, wait patiently

  403. for the Lord. And the note in Life Application Study

  404. Bible is fantastic. It says David knew from experience what

  405. it meant to wait for the Lord. He'd been anointed

  406. in king at age sixteen, but didn't become king until

  407. he was thirty. During the interim, he'd been chased through

  408. the wilderness by jealous King Saul. David had to wait

  409. on God for the fulfillment of his promise to Later,

  410. after becoming king, he was chased by his rebellious son Absalom.

  411. Waiting for God is not easy. Often it seems that

  412. He isn't answering our prayers or doesn't understand the urgency

  413. of our situation. That kind of thinking implies that God

  414. is not in control or is not fair. But God

  415. is worth waiting for. In Lamentations, chapter three, verse twenty

  416. four through twenty six calls us to hope in and

  417. wait for the Lord because often God uses times of

  418. waiting to refresh, renew and teach us. Make good use

  419. of your waiting times by discovering what God may be

  420. trying to teach you in them. You know, I've mentioned

  421. that phrase a couple times. That it's in hidden valleys

  422. where shepherds become kings. David waited and waited, and waited

  423. and waited. He just served his father. He took care

  424. of the sheep. During that time, he learned how to

  425. use a sling on a world class level. He learned

  426. how to fight bears and lions. He learned how to

  427. write prayers to God that he could turn into music

  428. as he's learning how to play his harp. All these

  429. things that carried through his faith, his skill sets, all

  430. those things were developed while he was waiting, seemingly doing nothing.

  431. Most boys would have felt like they were wasting their

  432. life right, And it was in those moments that he

  433. waited on God. God prepared him to be the king.

  434. So as you were talking about David, was you know

  435. no stranger to waiting on God? I thought about Isaiah

  436. forty thirty thirty one.

  437. Oh yeah.

  438. And it says, and this is from the NLT version,

  439. but it says even youths will become weak and tired,

  440. and young men will fall in exhaustion, but those who

  441. trust in the Lord. And another version would say, wait

  442. in the Lord. But those who wait upon the Lord

  443. will find new their strength. They were sore, high on

  444. wings like eagles, they were run and not grow weary.

  445. They will walk and not faint. But it says those

  446. who trust in the Lord. But the other version says wait.

  447. And I remember hearing a sermon one time that said,

  448. you know, wait upon the Lord, and he show knew

  449. your strength, and he goes, you know, there's two kinds

  450. of ways to wait. And I'm not sure this is

  451. like a root where or a Greek word or an

  452. intention that whatever, but it was an application more so.

  453. And he says, you can wait upon the Lord, meaning

  454. like you wait on his timing, but you could also

  455. wait upon the Lord as a waitress would wait on somebody.

  456. He says, So serve the Lord and be patient. Serve

  457. the Lord and be patient. I remember thinking, wow, that's

  458. really good. You know, hey, one thing I was going

  459. to say real quick, I know we're at our time,

  460. but and that is verse nouver ten. David says, even

  461. if my mother and father abandoned me, the Lord will

  462. hold me close. And here David is expressing like like,

  463. even if the closest people of my life were turned

  464. against me, it doesn't matter who's going to tell me

  465. to run away from you. God, you win right above

  466. everything in this earth. That's incredible. And then verse number

  467. eleven shows us that he is a student, because then

  468. he says, teach me how to live, a Lord, lead

  469. me along the right paths, and so, you know, just

  470. to just to say, God, I'm constantly awaiting your direct

  471. I'm constantly waiting your wisdom. I need your guidance. And

  472. so there's this dependence on God constantly that David demonstrates

  473. started his whole life.

  474. And you can see here that he doesn't want to

  475. get sucked into fighting on his enemies level. Yeah, he

  476. still wants to be a moral man, right, he still

  477. wants to do the right thing. God, teach me how

  478. to live, leave me along the right path. I want

  479. to do this the right way. I don't want to

  480. get I don't want to go down to their level.

  481. Elevate me up to yours, is what he's what he's saying, right,

  482. I want to do the right thing the right way.

  483. Yeah. Well, hey, that's just about our time. So we'll

  484. pick up on the story of David, hopefully tomorrow, and

  485. we'll see then on the Bibble guys,
