  1. You're listening to The Bible Guys, a podcast where a

  2. couple of friends talk about the Bible in fun in

  3. practical ways. Hey, everybody, welcome to another episode of The

  4. Bible Guys. Here we are, we are right here, great here,

  5. and we are excited once again because we believe that

  6. the Bible is exciting.

  7. It is it is. Yeah, so we're going to talk

  8. about it in fun and practical ways.

  9. There you go. You remember you remember when that one

  10. guy said he thought for a very long time that

  11. it was fun, fun in practical ways.

  12. Yeah, impractical. Yeah, yeah, you thought we were talking about

  13. fun and impractical ways about the Bible, which may speak

  14. more to his view of how we do this podcast.

  15. So that's really funny. Hey, I was just told yesterday

  16. that by a friend, John Borgland, who is now attending

  17. our new campus, the Shelby Campus or no, the Stony.

  18. Rochester Hills in Rochester Hills. Oh it's in Rochester Hills.

  19. I thought it was in Shelby. No, Shelby, I know

  20. it's Stony Creek. Stony Creek High School is in Rochester Hills.

  21. Oh okay, but anyway, the Point Church, yeah, no doubt.

  22. But anyway, I was just informed by John that he

  23. is now a daily listener of the Bible guests. Oh good, well,

  24. welcome John. Yeah, and his wife Betsy.

  25. Okay, and Betsy.

  26. And by the way, just real quick trivia. When I

  27. first moved to Michigan in two thousand and four, I

  28. moved a month before my wife did, and I had

  29. nowhere to stay, and I had they had to find

  30. somewhere for me to stay. So I stayed in John's basement.

  31. Oh wow, and he had five kids. Wow at the time,

  32. five boys. And I was in his basement for a month.

  33. Okay, so then he had six boys.

  34. Right, he had six boys. That's right, that's right.

  35. Wow. Anyway, Okay, Well, so here we go. It says

  36. we haven't done this segment in a while, so we

  37. need to make sure that we really the two of us,

  38. really know each other. Well, okay, so I'm supposed to

  39. ask you five questions yep, about myself and see if

  40. you know the quick answer.

  41. Well, it's kind of a catch twenty two because then

  42. now you're searching for things that you think I won't know.

  43. Well, no, no, I'm I was searching for things I

  44. thought you probably did know that I've said before.

  45. So if I don't know them, then I'm really bad.

  46. Yeah yeah, yeah.

  47. Okay, well thanks for that. Thanks for that intro.

  48. These are things you probably don't know. Okay, okay, what

  49. village was I born in?

  50. Village? Well, it's it's it's.

  51. No, no, no, I'm sorry. I wasn't born in the village.

  52. What village did I grew up in?

  53. Sorry? Is it LaPier?

  54. No, that's the town I was born in.

  55. Okay, So there's a village. Wait a minute, I know this.

  56. I know this. You said this before, because I don't

  57. understand it.

  58. It's where it's it's the island where Napoleon was banished.

  59. Elba.

  60. There you go, Elba, Yeah, Elba, there you go.

  61. Oh, so have begun. So, so explain that to me.

  62. So there's a village in a town.

  63. So there's the city of LaPier in the county of LaPier.

  64. But I lived eleven miles outside of the city of LaPier,

  65. in the county of LaPier, in the village of Elba.

  66. Oh my goodness, gracious. Yeah, okay, all right, very good.

  67. That's a good one. Yeah, okay, So you know I

  68. like to grill. Yes, yeah, it's one of my favorite things.

  69. To do. What's my favorite kind of meat to grill?

  70. Favor kind of meat?

  71. Yeah?

  72. Oh wow, Okay, that's just tough. I'm not sure I

  73. know this, but I am going to say steak.

  74. Hmmm, pork.

  75. I was gonna say.

  76. Loud, yeah, that's okay.

  77. That's a good one, because because barbecue is your favorite.

  78. Yeah, I love it. I love it, yep, I love

  79. I love it. Okay, so there's two. How many brothers

  80. and sisters do I have?

  81. Oh?

  82. Wow, this is this is really I'll just say siblings.

  83. How about siblings?

  84. Siblings total? I know for a fact you have well

  85. I shouldn't say fact, you have at least three, So

  86. I'm gonna say I'm going to say three.

  87. Okay, I have ten siblings. Wait are these every step

  88. I have four? Yeah? Yeah, so I'm I'm only my

  89. mom's right, uh and my my biological fathers. That's it.

  90. But I have ten step siblings.

  91. Do you know? I'm not I'm not sure I've ever

  92. heard that before. Really yeah, yeah, no, I'm I mean,

  93. I'm trying to register my brain. I just mentioned to

  94. you that John Borgland had five kids. Yeah, right, so

  95. five boys is like, wow, that's a lot.

  96. I grew up in five boys right.

  97. To hear the word ten.

  98. Right, and then I would be the I'm the eleventh,

  99. I'm you know, so.

  100. I would make a total So to hear the word

  101. eleven then.

  102. Yeah, so it was kind of one of those yours

  103. mine and ours right is kind of one of those

  104. those deals.

  105. I think that would register my brain, so I won't

  106. forget that. Yeah, eleven, it's astounding. Yeah, it's truly astounding.

  107. Isn't that crazy?

  108. And by the way, I should have known that four

  109. years in. I should know that. And by the way,

  110. how many bathrooms did you have?

  111. One? I grew up in an eight hundred square foot

  112. house with eleven. No, no, eleven, so that the most

  113. we had, like three or four.

  114. Okay, so it's constantly shifting.

  115. Yeah, it's always shifting.

  116. Yeah, okay, all right. Wow. Bonnie's at home listening right now.

  117. She's like, she's like, oh.

  118. And Liz is going come on, Chris, Yeah, yeah, so

  119. what's that?

  120. I know these things?

  121. That's three, So I need to give you one more,

  122. don't I?

  123. Uh?

  124. Oh, okay, I think I said this one time maybe

  125. on the podcast. I'm actually or in conversation, do you

  126. know what my first car was.

  127. Now, I think you told me a story about like

  128. driving home and breaking down at Christmas or something. Car.

  129. Well, no, but yeah, that's a that's a story that happened.

  130. That was.

  131. That was our on our honeymoon.

  132. Okay, well that's what that's probably that was your car. Yeah,

  133. try to think of whether or not you told me

  134. a story about what your first car was. I don't

  135. think you have, but I'm going to take a guess.

  136. I'm going to say that your first car was a Chavette.

  137. It was not. No, I never got a Chavette. My

  138. first car was a Buick Skylark. It was it was

  139. like a tan Buicks car. I know. That's why. That's

  140. why I said it. I remember that you.

  141. You mentioned that was my first car. I would have

  142. remembered that.

  143. I wouldn't, so I didn't want it. So I had

  144. I had a a moped and I was fine with that.

  145. I was able to go to work do all those things,

  146. you know. And my sister wanted me to take uh

  147. this Skylark and she was going to give it to me.

  148. I didn't want it, so I don't want it. And

  149. then she's like, if you come and get it today.

  150. I'll give you a full tank of gas. And I

  151. was like, I really don't. As my second oldest sister,

  152. I said, I just I don't want to don't want

  153. to pay insurance, I don't want to take care of it.

  154. I'm not a mechanic. And she's like, no, it runs

  155. really good. Just coming get it. And then she goes, okay,

  156. i'll give you a full tank of guess and fifty bucks.

  157. So my sister filled the tank of guests and gave

  158. me fifty bucks to take this car.

  159. Wow, she want to get rid of it.

  160. They were moving. They used to live in Troy and

  161. they were moving. They sold their businesses and they were

  162. moving to Ohio and she wanted me to take the car.

  163. How were you at the time, Like seventeen? Wow, okay,

  164. that's funny. Okay, well it's just I remember that you

  165. had a Skylark. That's why I was.

  166. I was over that entire get Yeah.

  167. Yeah, that's all right.

  168. Now.

  169. I still feel loved by you, Chris, because you wanted

  170. to know and that's what's important.

  171. Yeah, well that is true. That is true. So eleven

  172. siblings total buick Skylark pork, which I by the way.

  173. I think I.

  174. Knew I have ten siblings. I'm I make That's why

  175. I said.

  176. Yeah yeah. And then and then what was the other one?

  177. Elba elba elba elba Yeah, yeah, yeah yeah. So my

  178. old oldest sister and my youngest brother are over thirty

  179. years apart.

  180. That's crazy.

  181. Ye isn't that crazy. I'm twenty years older than my

  182. youngest brother.

  183. That is super crazy.

  184. Amazing. Okay, here we go, we're going to jump into this.

  185. This is very exciting. This is there's so much intrigue

  186. in the next two days, right, it's it's a very

  187. big thing. Before these things happened, David had wanted to

  188. begin building the temple for God. Remember yep, and we're

  189. not reading this, and God.

  190. Said no, no, because there's too much blood in your hands.

  191. That's right, you're a killer, that's right. And so I'm

  192. not going to have you build my temple, but I

  193. will let your air build my temple. And so instead,

  194. David collected all the stuff. He began to reach out

  195. and get as much of the stuff as he could. Yeah.

  196. So he began to get the wood and the stone

  197. and all these things. He began to set up the

  198. priests and he began to set up the music and

  199. began to set up a lot of the structure, even

  200. though he wasn't allowed to build the temple. And then

  201. he's coming kind of towards the end of his life.

  202. He's an old man, and that's where we pick up

  203. is he's about to die, and then we're going to

  204. look into the succession. So we're going to read first

  205. King's chapter one, and we're going to read through verse

  206. twenty seven. It says King David was now very old,

  207. and no matter how many blankets covered, and he cannot

  208. keep you warm. So his advisors told him, let us

  209. find a young virgin to wait on you and look

  210. after you, my lord, and she will lie in your

  211. arms and keep you warm. And so they searched throughout

  212. the land of Israel for a beautiful girl, and they

  213. found Abishag from Shunam and brought her to the king.

  214. The girl was very beautiful, and she looked after the

  215. king and took care of him, but the king had

  216. no sexual relations with her. About that time, David's son

  217. Ada Nija, whose mother was Hagath, began boasting, I will

  218. make myself king. So he provided himself with chariots and

  219. chariot tears, and recruited fifty men to run in front

  220. of him, just like Absolom did right yep. Now, his father,

  221. King David, had never disciplined him at any time, even

  222. by asking him, why are you doing that. Adamnijah had

  223. been born next after Absalom, and he was very handsome.

  224. Ada and Nijah took joe Abs son of Zuriah, and

  225. Abiathar the priest into his confidence, and they agreed to

  226. help him become king. So Zadok the priest Benaiah son

  227. of Jehoeida, and Nathan the prophet shimii Reyi, and David's

  228. personal bodyguard refused to support Adamaija. Adanijah went to the

  229. stone of Zolath near the spring of Angrogol, where he

  230. sacrificed sheep and cattle and fat and calves. And he

  231. invited all his brothers, the other sons of King David,

  232. and all the royal officials of Judah. But he did

  233. not invite Nathan the prophet or ben Ayah, or the

  234. king's bodyguard or his brother Solomon. Then Nathan went to Bathsheba,

  235. Solomon's mother, and asked her, haven't you heard that Hageth's

  236. son Adanija has made himself king and our Lord David

  237. doesn't even know about it. If you want to save

  238. your own life in the life of your son Solomon,

  239. follow my advice. Go at once to King David and

  240. say to my lord the King, don't you make a

  241. vow and say to me your son Solomon? Or didn't

  242. you make a vow and say to me your son

  243. Solomon will surely be the next king and will sit

  244. on my throne? Why then, has ad Andaija become king?

  245. And while you are still talking with him, I will

  246. come and confirm everything you've said. So Bathsheba went into

  247. the king's bedroom and he was very old now, and

  248. Abhishak was taking care of him. Bathsheba bowed down before

  249. the king. What can I do for you, he asked,

  250. She replied, my lord, you made a vow before the

  251. Lord your God when you said to me your son

  252. Solomon will surely be the next king and I will

  253. sit on my throne. But instead Adanija has made himself king,

  254. and my lord the King does not even know about it.

  255. He has sacrificed many cattle and fat, and cabs and sheep,

  256. and he's invited all the king's sons to attend the celebration.

  257. He also invited Abiathar the priest and Joe Abb, the

  258. commander of the army, but he did not invite your

  259. servant Solomon. And now, my lord the king, all Israel

  260. is waiting for you to announce who will become king

  261. after you. If you do not act, my son Solomon

  262. and I will be treated as criminals as soon as

  263. my lord the king has died. While she was still

  264. speaking with the king, Nathan the Prophet arrived. The king's

  265. officials told him, Nathan the Prophet is here to see you.

  266. Nathan went in and bowed before the king with his

  267. face to the ground. Nathan asked, my lord the King,

  268. have you decided that Ada and Nija will be the

  269. next king and that he will sit on your throne? Today?

  270. He has sacrificed many cattle, fat and calves and sheep,

  271. and he's invited all the king's sons attend the celebration.

  272. He also invited the commanders of the army and Abiathar

  273. the priest. They're feasting and drinking with him and shouting

  274. long lean, long live King ad Inaijah. But he did

  275. not invite me or Zadok the priest, or ben a

  276. Ayah or your servant Solomon. Has my lord the king

  277. really done this without letting any of his officials know

  278. who would be the next king? And that's where we end,

  279. because tomorrow we find out what happens.

  280. Don't don't don't. And well, first of all, that's a

  281. long passage and a very good story.

  282. Yes it is.

  283. It's a cliffhanger of a kind of a thing. And

  284. by the way, this is very much like a Game

  285. of Thrones, Yeah, the type thing happening, because you could

  286. only imagine, you know, he's doing the same thing that

  287. his brother did, right, just pretending to be king when

  288. he's not king. Just hey, hire fifty bodyguards that run

  289. in front of him, and then just go out and

  290. just start announcing that you're king. And you could imagine

  291. back in the day, all you really had to do

  292. is persuade the people. As long as you persuade the

  293. people who didn't know any better, then all of a sudden, I'm.

  294. Still pretty much back in today's day, Isn't it just

  295. persuade the people who don't know any better?

  296. You are correct? I mean again, this is being recorded

  297. before our election. And I mean, you know, it's like

  298. you see commercials and you're like, unless you really know,

  299. why wouldn't you believe that.

  300. I literally had somebody come and ask me and say, hey,

  301. who are you going to vote for? Because you and

  302. I are shooting this before the election? Correct, And I said, wow,

  303. I don't ever tell anybody who I vote for. And

  304. this person said, if you made me a list, I'll

  305. just vote the way you vote. And I was like what,

  306. and the lady said, I just don't even know. Yeah,

  307. I don't know any of this stuff. I don't know

  308. these people. I don't know anything about them. I've never

  309. met ay these people. I don't know anything about this.

  310. And so I wonder how many people just check boxes

  311. on the things. Sure, I didn't know anything, they do

  312. any research or nothing. They just you know. Yeah, so

  313. it's pretty easy to fool the people.

  314. Well, did you ever see the movie with Michael Douglas

  315. the American President? No? Well, an At Benning, Oh my goodness,

  316. you would love this movie. I'm not even kidding. Okay,

  317. it's great. But anyway, during this speech, Michael J. Fox

  318. back then, you know, he was still able to act

  319. in things and anyway, Michael J. Fox was his advisor

  320. to Michael Douglas, and he's and he'd get this big speech,

  321. and what he was trying to say is he was

  322. trying to say to the leader, to his president, hey,

  323. please provide some leadership. And the comment that he used

  324. is he said, mister president, and he said, people are

  325. so desperate for leadership they will crawl through the desert

  326. just for a glass of water. And he said they'll

  327. drink the sand. And then Michael J. Fox looks back

  328. and says, he says, hey, he is. What you don't

  329. realize is people drink the sand not because they're thirsty,

  330. but because they don't know the difference. Well, and it

  331. was just a comment that is exactly like what we're

  332. saying now. And he's and he's like, yeah, you're right.

  333. I forget the guy's name in the movie, but he says,

  334. you're right. He says they'll drink the sand, but not

  335. because they're thirsty for real knowledge, they'll drink it just

  336. because they have no idea what they're drinking. And it

  337. was just it was just this comment that you know,

  338. sort of shines light and says, yeah, that's sort of

  339. the way it is. Well, that's I mean, think about it,

  340. how many thousands of years ago did this take place?

  341. And as much as as much as has changed, so

  342. much has remained the same, and not much has changed.

  343. You just have more technology. We're not any smarter.

  344. No, that's right, right, that's right.

  345. So I will say this, just to clarify for some

  346. of the surprise, I refused to give this person my

  347. my voting list, right, I said, hey, go look at

  348. some of this material. Right, as I said, here's here's

  349. where you can find some answers. But I wouldn't I

  350. wouldn't tell. So anyways, here you have David. He's so

  351. old he can't even regulate his own body temperature. So

  352. he has a nurse maid. He's not it's not an

  353. intimacy thing, but he has a nurse maid who helps

  354. take care of him Lewis And uh, well, no, her

  355. name is Abas Shagg, the.

  356. Guy's name in the movie, Michael J. Fox's character of Lewis.

  357. I thought you were saying Louis was the nurse maid

  358. keeping him warm. Just ki, her name is Abshag. But sorry, yeah, so,

  359. and then, uh so, basically that's letting you know he's

  360. so old at this point, he can't regulate his own

  361. body temperature. He's he's on his last legs. He's about

  362. to die, this great warrior. And adam Ija rises up

  363. man and he's like, man, I'm going to go get

  364. this thing. I'm going to take it. He sees a

  365. weak moment in David's life and he decides he's going

  366. to do the same thing that Abslom did, but this

  367. time he's not going to be able to fight because

  368. he doesn't have the strength to do it. But it's

  369. interesting to me. There's a couple of quick things. One

  370. ada Nija invites the people who agree with him, and

  371. he does not invite any feedback from the people who don't.

  372. Right.

  373. Right, And there's a lot of danger when you and

  374. I both know, and most of our listeners know. It's

  375. already been brought out on social media that they give

  376. you more of what you want. The algorithms give you

  377. more of what they know you are. They don't give

  378. you hardly any opposing views. The opposing views they give

  379. you are the ones you're going to get the maddest

  380. about to drive you more towards your opinion already, right,

  381. But they don't give. And so what's happening is we

  382. start living if we're not careful. We only watch certain news,

  383. we only read certain articles, we only pay attention to

  384. certain social media. We start isolating ourselves from anybody who's

  385. different from us or thinks different from us, and we

  386. start to live in this echo chamber that reaffirms every

  387. thought and opinion that we have have. And this is

  388. what you find an at a night you're doing is

  389. he's not listening to the Man of God, Nathan, right,

  390. he's not.

  391. You know.

  392. Alls he got was a soldier. He got a soldier

  393. and a couple of priests to come along with him.

  394. But he didn't get the most important people in the

  395. in the in the kingdom because he didn't want to

  396. hear what they wanted, what they were going to say. Yeah,

  397. he wanted affirmation for his opinion rather than to find

  398. out what's the best thing to do or what's the truth. Right,

  399. that's a temptation for us as humans.

  400. I had a person on staff on my previous staff

  401. that used to say, if you're on staff with a

  402. person who's exactly like you, then one of you is irrelevant.

  403. That's true. Yeah, yeah, yeah, it's the same thing in friendships.

  404. It's the same thing in marriage, right and everything. If

  405. you're exactly the same one of you's irrelevant.

  406. Yeah, And so we need people with opposing views in

  407. our lives. We need people to challenge us. I mean,

  408. that's what the Bible says. In fact, even in Corinthians,

  409. when it talks about the structure of the church, it

  410. says that we're different. Right, the hand needs the foot,

  411. and the ear needs the eye, and we're all different

  412. members with different functions with the same body. And you know,

  413. such as life, we're supposed to live our lives with

  414. people around us that have different and opposing views than us.

  415. Because when we want to do our selfish things and

  416. make our selfish choices and even sinful things that we

  417. don't want anybody to challenge us. Imagine if we were

  418. only to surround ourselves with people who are just yes men,

  419. or you know, people who are not going to say

  420. the right things or speak truth and love, Well, that's

  421. just a terrible life because then we have no accountability,

  422. we have no opportunity to grow, we don't become better people.

  423. You have to have people around you that are going

  424. to challenge you. And so that's what he's doing here.

  425. He's eliminating the people who are going to check him

  426. on this, right, the ones are going to say, man,

  427. what are you doing?

  428. So remember when we talked about it, so you can

  429. differentiate between you know, a little bit of self centered narcissism,

  430. you know, self inflicted echo chamber bubble that Abiathar decides

  431. to live in as or at ny jump sorry, decides

  432. to put himself in as opposed to if you look

  433. back to David, when David was kind of at his peak,

  434. he remember Abner had come gone against him with Absolom,

  435. and David had the guts to bring Abner back in right,

  436. remember that, and he protected Abner in that moment. So

  437. you got Joe ab going what in the.

  438. World, right?

  439. But David wasn't afraid of different opinions or different people

  440. coming from different places. And I think it's one of

  441. the things that made David great later on. When you

  442. look at some of the other kings, Solomon for instance,

  443. being you know, the wisest king ever, Solomon had a

  444. very diverse group of people that were advising him. I

  445. think that there's some advantage on that only if you

  446. are wise. Lots of opinions don't help if you don't

  447. have wisdom. And so you know, the Bible says that

  448. if anybody lacks wisdom, you have to ask of God,

  449. and he gives generously to everybody. Yeah, that will ask.

  450. And so I think that we where we get God's

  451. wisdom is from his word. So the Holy Spirit is

  452. our teacher as Christians. His word tells us what God thinks,

  453. it's it gives us his wisdom. And then Solomon also

  454. tells us in the Book of Proverbs there's wisdom and

  455. a multitude of counselors. And that doesn't mean having twenty

  456. five opinions about one idea. I think it's having the

  457. right counselors, a group of counselors that can count you

  458. in all the counsel you in all the specific areas.

  459. You need a really good financial advisor, you need a

  460. really good marriage counselor, you need a really good parenting advisor.

  461. You need a really good career advisor. You need you know,

  462. for me, I need somebody who can do maintenance and

  463. construction because I, you know, cut my fingers off when

  464. I work on stuff. Right, there's wisdom when you have

  465. a group of people around you that can advise you

  466. in every area.

  467. You know, I just saw You're gonna laugh the Broadway

  468. show Newsy's with Jeremy Jordan, and there's a line in

  469. there where it says where the lady challenged him as

  470. the leader and said, a good leader doesn't have to

  471. always come up with the good ideas. He just have

  472. to it has to be smart enough to recognize the

  473. good idea when he hears it. Yeah, and that is

  474. a principle that is like, first of all, it's incredibly insightful,

  475. but it's also this exact same thing with the advice

  476. that God gives us. What you're saying, godly counsel, surround

  477. yourself with godly counsel. And then also if that advice

  478. is based on God's word, right, so godly counsel has

  479. advice based on God's word. Sometimes advice is practical, yes,

  480. it's just it's a human advice, it's human wisdom. But

  481. the majority of the time, if we surround ourselves with

  482. people with godly counsel, all truth comes from God. That's

  483. what the Bible says, All truth comes from God. All

  484. if it is true, it comes from God. So therefore

  485. chances are it's like that guy. I'm quoting a bunch

  486. of movies now, but it's like that guy and my

  487. big fact Greek wedding when he goes, give me a

  488. word and I tell you where it comes from from

  489. the Greek, right, it's all truth. I could you give

  490. me a truth and I can tell you where that

  491. comes from, because all truth is God's truth, is God's truth,

  492. and so godly counsel can give you good advice, but

  493. chances are it is connected to what God already says

  494. is true, and it's it's the best piece of advice.

  495. We are to recognize God's word as the final authority

  496. in our lives. And if we're able as as wise

  497. people to recognize, oh, that's a Godly truth, then we

  498. need people around us to feed us that even when

  499. we're not thinking that way.

  500. It's good. So there's something to this where you can

  501. see the weakness of David's son, and I think it

  502. leads to his downfall. So hey, tomorrow, we're going to

  503. find out what happens. The rest of this super exciting,

  504. So you don't want to miss tomorrow's episode.

  505. All right, We'll see you then on the Baba Gus
