  21. You're listening to the Bible Guys, a podcast where a

  22. couple of friends talk about the Bible in fun, in

  23. practical ways. Hey, everybody, welcome to the Bible Guys. It

  24. is Friday. If you're listening day to day, and so we.

  25. Are, it's an important day. Yes, it is an.

  26. Important day because because it's everybody's favorite segment.

  27. Well, that's because but in a world full of injustice,

  28. this is what made Chris mad this week. That's right,

  29. that's good.

  30. I like it.

  31. Hey, I think you should introduce it every single time

  32. in the world, in Christmas world.

  33. Yes, it's just full of injustice.

  34. So typically when I am asked the question what made

  35. Chris mad this week? I would say the majority of

  36. the time, wouldn't you say that my complaints are against

  37. sort of like dumb people in bad customer service, bad

  38. customer service, and.

  39. People who don't take the carts back.

  40. Yes, and I and I get mad for the behalf

  41. of us.

  42. Yes, for the little people.

  43. Yes, yes, you you are mad for me and all

  44. the other little people in the world.

  45. Well, this maeks a little bit different because I'm still

  46. mad for the masses. Okay, I'm not just mad for me.

  47. I'm mad for the world. Yes, they have to experience

  48. what I'm going to complain about, Okay, but I'm mad

  49. at time time because my knees aren't holding up the

  50. way that they used to.

  51. Oh.

  52. Oh, I'm working out and I'll step wrong, and literally,

  53. all of a sudden, I go like this, I step wrong,

  54. and I go in. My wife goes, what was that.

  55. I'm like, I don't know, right, And then like you

  56. bend over in your back, it's like, oh, or maybe

  57. you'll twist. You're in your car and you twist and

  58. you go grab something, and all of a sudden, like

  59. this pain comes up and it just won't, you know,

  60. go away for a minute. And then I also realized

  61. that when I was thirty, I if I wanted to

  62. drop to ten pounds, I could do it in five minutes.

  63. It seems like right right, And it seems like the

  64. oher you get right hard it is. And I have

  65. been recognizing lately that yes, I'm currently right now, I'm

  66. not overweight. Currently, right now, I'm eating well. Currently right now,

  67. I'm working out, and I'm doing all those things. So

  68. like I'm definitely being active. So it's not as if

  69. you could look at me and be.

  70. Like, okay, being active.

  71. Come on, mister, say get off the couch, you know. Like,

  72. so I'm being active, and because I'm being active, I'm

  73. recognizing how much I am not a friend of time.

  74. I don't like time. I'm out of time currently.

  75. Yes, but you're getting so distinguished. Time is making you

  76. like this distinguished.

  77. Okay, So you're saying there's some benefits of time. Yeah, yeah, yeah,

  78. there's there's this much benefit, there's this much drawback. Okay,

  79. that's fine, which I would even argue that that's pretty subjective. Okay, right,

  80. but I really think time is a terrible thing to

  81. do with.

  82. Wow.

  83. Yeah, don't you agree? You're the same age as me.

  84. Yeah, so people ask me that. People get frustrated that

  85. I don't feel bad about being my age.

  86. I like my age every year. I never. I never

  87. dread a birthday. I never.

  88. I'm like, oh, I'm getting old everything. Like I don't

  89. play softball very much anymore. Right, I loved baseball, and

  90. softball I don't play it much anymore because that season

  91. my life is over.

  92. But I'm I'm a grandfather.

  93. Now, How cool is this, and I'm I'm in a

  94. place where finally, financially things are getting a little bit

  95. more stable, and and you know, I feel like I

  96. have a patience and a wisdom I didn't stab So

  97. I like my life today, okay, And I don't resent.

  98. None of that.

  99. Is that what I'm talking about talking about?

  100. Physically?

  101. Yeah?

  102. Yeah, I don't know.

  103. Yeah, because everything you're saying I have.

  104. My left knee is a little goofy. But I just

  105. always keep thinking I should go get it. Then I

  106. have it, but I don't. I don't know, and I

  107. never think of it like, oh, man, I wish I

  108. wasn't old.

  109. You don't think of it as oh, that's new. When

  110. I'm working out with my trainer and she and she's like, hey,

  111. do this, and I go, oh, I make it, and

  112. she's like, what's your problem now, I'm like, hang on,

  113. I have to rest for a minute because it's an

  114. old person thing. Or she'll say do do reverse lunches

  115. and I'll go back.

  116. And she specializes in like geriatric, she does all of.

  117. The old people we send to that trainer.

  118. No, that is not so.

  119. If you don't know, if you're if you're a new listener.

  120. The church that we passed her at Heritage Church in

  121. uh outside of Detroit, Michigan. You take the We have

  122. a gym, yes, the Hetage Fitness Project. Yes, and we

  123. have several trainers.

  124. By the way, it's a great gym, fabulous.

  125. Gym, And we have several trainers.

  126. Yes.

  127. And your trainer is the one that also trains all

  128. of the old people.

  129. My trainer. You to be ready for this. For a living,

  130. she did physical therapy, so she was an actual pet person.

  131. That she was. She's fabulous, Yeah, which means she.

  132. Contains knowledge for those up in age that other people

  133. do not contain.

  134. That's what I think I would saying.

  135. So I would say the specializes the wisdom of Chris May,

  136. who leads the thing, would say, anybody who's a little

  137. bit older go to her because she's better. She won't

  138. hurt you like she's no, that's okay, well, actually that is.

  139. She'll give you modified exercises well because the young people.

  140. Yeah, when I had.

  141. Two mensca surgery, she knew every modified extra absolutely.

  142. Yeah.

  143. She does not specialize in Jerryachers, I love it.

  144. I love Yes. No, she's great though, yees, she is great.

  145. But I'm mad at time, mad at time?

  146. Thank you, buddy, thank you, thank you, because I wouldn't

  147. have even thought to be mad at.

  148. Time for people.

  149. Yes, yeah, because you're closer to heaven. Did you ever

  150. see the movie with Will Smith were He's mad at

  151. death and time and love? No, what's that called? Anyway? Yeah,

  152. he's actually mad at time.

  153. Okay, nope, I'm not not yet anyway. Okay, well, hey,

  154. thank you Chris for that. I know many of our

  155. listeners probably.

  156. It's called collateral beauty.

  157. Okay, no I haven't. Yeah, uh, I'm sure many of

  158. our listeners are grateful for your your concern.

  159. Thank you.

  160. Yes, and if you could do something about it, then

  161. that help be helpful. Yeah, because when you're in a

  162. parking lot and you see somebody not put away their cart,

  163. you just yell.

  164. At him put your card away. What kind of person

  165. are you?

  166. Yeah?

  167. Well this right?

  168. Yeah, you're right, you kid?

  169. Yeah yeah yeah.

  170. But if you can work it out, if you can

  171. work out a solution for this time thing, then let

  172. us know.

  173. Yeah yeah, yeah, get to.

  174. Work on it, no problem, I'll let you know.

  175. Well, thank you, thank you, thank you.

  176. Hoops dropped my is to get to get to heaven

  177. before you and to convince God to change the system.

  178. Yeah, that's which is not going to happen. Okay, it's

  179. not gonna happen. You're not gonna get to heaven for me.

  180. Well, I mean, I'm a pretty good influencer, but probably not.

  181. He's not sure he's getting to heaven. People, you heard

  182. it here first.

  183. You remember the old nineteen seventies movies Oh God, Remember

  184. Oh God?

  185. Yeah, with George Burns.

  186. Yeah, yeah, not very biblical, but there's a conversation and

  187. oh God. Book two, he's having a conversation with a

  188. little girl and she and she's real small, and they're

  189. walking together and she goes, God, She goes, why did

  190. you make the giraffes next so long? And he goes

  191. to have to eat off of the high trees, and

  192. she goes, why didn't you make the tree shorter? And

  193. he just looks down and he smiles, and he goes,

  194. where were you? And I needed you?

  195. There?

  196. You go, Yeah, I'm sure there's a lot of us

  197. who really helped God Outah right, okay, well, hey today,

  198. do you have a transition for us?

  199. Yes, speak speaking of speaking of Wait a minute, I

  200. did God. Book two quotes. So I gotta go back

  201. to the time. Speaking of time, we are going to

  202. skip over the time that Solomon built the temple, because

  203. that is a lot of time. And we're going to

  204. skip over to the time where he actually dedicates the temple.

  205. Okay, to the dedication time, not the building time.

  206. Correct.

  207. Okay.

  208. See, it's a terrible transition.

  209. That was a terrible which is our goal. Our goal

  210. is terrible transitions.

  211. So, if you're a Bible reader, which I hope you are,

  212. there is something really special about these chapters that talk

  213. about the glory of the temple. Yes, it describes the

  214. exterior being just massive. The interior is magnificent. Remember this

  215. is a building that is worth billions upon billions of

  216. dollars with the gold and silver and all these things.

  217. It is an unbelievably magnificent building. And then it talks

  218. about the furnishings. And I mean King Solomon went all out, Yes,

  219. came to the glory of God's place right temple, and

  220. then the life applications.

  221. He loved his father, Yeah.

  222. And he honored his father, and his father really set

  223. the precedence for this thing because it was actually David's

  224. brainchild and it was. It was David's passion, right and

  225. his sacrifice.

  226. That's correct.

  227. So yeah, So then in the Life Application Study Bible,

  228. there's a couple of cross sections and some pictures and

  229. those kinds of things, and tons of notes, and so

  230. honestly we're skipping twenty pages here of really great stuff

  231. that if you would go back and read it. Both

  232. it's found in First Kings and then also in Second Chronicles.

  233. These these two passages or two books kind of highlight

  234. the same basic stories. So we're going to be reading

  235. from Second Chronicles, chapter seven, and it says when Solomon

  236. finished praying, right, he prayed this amazing prayer about everything

  237. comes from you and you are great and glorious and

  238. all these things.

  239. Is really great.

  240. And then it says when Solomon finished praying, fire flashed

  241. down from heaven and burned up the burnoff frings in

  242. the sacrifice. This in the glorious presence of the Lord

  243. filled the.

  244. Temple, I think makes me think of Indiana Jones.

  245. Yeah, no, caid, the priests could not enter the temple

  246. of the Lord because the glorious presence of the Lord

  247. filled it.

  248. When all the people of Israel.

  249. Saw the fire coming down in the glorious presence of

  250. the Lord filling the temple. They fell face down on

  251. the ground and worshiped and praised the Lord, saying he

  252. is good, His faithful love endures forever. Then the king

  253. and all the people offered sacrifices to the Lord. King

  254. Solomon offered a sacrifice a twenty two thousand cattle, one

  255. hundred and twenty thousand sheep and goats, and so the

  256. king and all the people dedicated the temple of God.

  257. The priests took their assigned positions, and so did the Levites,

  258. who were singing His faithful Love and doers forever, That's

  259. their song. They accompanied the singing with music from the

  260. instruments David had made for praising the Lord. Across from

  261. the levites, the priests blew the trumpet while all Israel stood.

  262. Solomon then consecrated the central area of the courtyard in

  263. front of the Lord's temple. He offered burnt offerings and

  264. the fat of peace offerings there because the bronze altar

  265. he had built could not hold all the burnt offerings,

  266. grain offerings, and sacrificial fat. For the next seven days,

  267. Solomon and all Israel celebrated the Festival of Shelters. A

  268. large congregation had gathered from as far away as Lebohemath

  269. in the north into the Brook of Egypt in the south.

  270. On the eighth day, they had a closing ceremony, for

  271. they had celebrated the dedication of the altar for seven days,

  272. the Festival of Shelters for seven days. Then at the

  273. end of the celebration, Solomon sent the people home. They

  274. were all joyful and glad because the Lord had been

  275. so good to David and to Solomon and to his

  276. people Israel. So Solomon finished the Temple of the Lord

  277. as well as the royal Palace, and he completed everything

  278. he had planned to do in the construction of the

  279. temple in the palace. And then one night the Lord

  280. appeared to Solomon and said, I've heard your prayer, and

  281. I've chosen this temple as the place for making sacrifices.

  282. At times I might shut up to heavens so that

  283. no rainfalls, or command grasshoppers to devour your crops, or

  284. send plagues among you. Then if my people who are

  285. called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and

  286. seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways, I

  287. will hear from heaven, will forgive their sins and restore

  288. their land. My eyes will be open and my ears

  289. attended to every prayer made in this place. For I

  290. have chosen this temple and set it apart to be holy,

  291. a place where my name will be honored forever. I

  292. will always watch over it, for it is dear to

  293. my heart. As for you, if you faithfully follow me

  294. as David your father did, obeying all my commands, decrees

  295. and regulations, then I will establish the throne of your dynasty.

  296. For I made this covenant with your father, David, when

  297. I said one of your descendants will always rule over Israel.

  298. But if you or your.

  299. Descendants abandon me and disobey the decrees and commands I've

  300. given you, and if you serve and worship other gods,

  301. then I will uproot the people from this land that

  302. I have given them, and I will reject this temple

  303. that I have made holy to honor my name. I

  304. will make it an object of mockery and res to

  305. qele among the nations. And though this temple is impressive, now,

  306. all who pass by will be appalled. They will ask,

  307. what did the Lord do or why did the Lord

  308. do such terrible.

  309. Things as this land and to this temple? Is that

  310. where I end one more vership.

  311. And the answer will be because this people abandoned the Lord,

  312. the god of their ancestors, who brought them out of Egypt,

  313. and they worshiped other gods instead and bowed down into them.

  314. That is why he has brought all these disasters on them.

  315. Wow.

  316. Yeah, So up to this point there had never been

  317. a permanent address for God. There was the Tabernacle, which

  318. was a mobile even though it wasn't It was very

  319. stationary in one place for long periods of time, but

  320. they would.

  321. Pick it up and move it there.

  322. They would pick it up. It was tense, yeah, yeah,

  323. are tense yep. And it was elaborate, I mean it was.

  324. It was not you know, a circus tent where you

  325. put up in one day. But however it was mobile.

  326. And but this is the first time where brick and

  327. mortar and stone and gold and silver and everything else

  328. comes together, and it is the most I would imagine

  329. it is probably the most elaborate building, maybe perhaps ever

  330. created in human history. At this point. Would you agree

  331. with that? Yeah?

  332. Well, if you get in and read the descriptors, I mean,

  333. the everything covered in gold, the magnificent design of it.

  334. But then it was so delicately made that there there

  335. were leaves on this this one thing inside the temple,

  336. there was a tree and there were leaves, and each

  337. of the leaves was independent, and when the wind would

  338. blow through, the leaves would rustle.

  339. But it was made out of gold. Right, it's phenomenal.

  340. The artistry in this is it's the peak. It's the

  341. pinnacle of everything that had ever been made in the

  342. world up to that point. Right, And you and I

  343. we've been to the Pyramids before. I've been to all

  344. kinds of pretty amazing things that happened before this time,

  345. but I've never seen anything that even came close to

  346. the intricacies and the delicacy of how fabulous and ornate

  347. this building was.

  348. Yeah, it's pretty pretty phenomenal.

  349. So it's yeah, it's got to be one of the

  350. greatest structures ever built. God says, Hey, listen, I'm impressed.

  351. I like it a lot. Don't mess with me or

  352. I'll destroy it, because this building is not more important

  353. to me than your heart. Right, what you built for

  354. me is not more important to me. There if you

  355. cheat on me. This building means nothing to me. That's

  356. what he says. Right, I'll destroy it and the world

  357. will mock it. And that that's really amazing that even then,

  358. in this great act of worship, God still only really

  359. wants the heart. Thank you for the nice gift, but

  360. I want the heart.

  361. Because because the temple for God is just a vessel.

  362. For this is where the sacrifices will be. I'll hear

  363. the prayers in this building. That's the promise. And as

  364. long as you worship me, this building will be important

  365. to me. If you if you don't worship me, I'll

  366. make it mockery this building. So yeah, you're right, it is.

  367. It is only important because of the people. It's only

  368. important because God's cheap desire hire is to have a

  369. personal relationship. And by the way, that's that's a sermon altogether.

  370. Isn't it.

  371. Because you know, people think that you know that Jesus.

  372. Sometimes they would claim or think that Jesus came to

  373. start a religion. Jesus didn't start to coming just to

  374. start a religion. He came to start a relationship, right

  375. with with with you and with me. That's his chief goal.

  376. That's God's end game from the very beginning was our

  377. relationship were stored with our heavenly Father and uh and

  378. then also, uh, we're to understand that that God uh

  379. wants us more than our even our obedience. So what

  380. is he saying in the Old Testament? He says, uh

  381. uh uh, it's it's more obedience is more important than sacrifice.

  382. The human response is more important than a thousand burnt offerings.

  383. Right.

  384. So so it's always primarily the person over action, and

  385. it's over in this case the temple right right, which

  386. which which translates today into churches.

  387. Yeah, it's always the person over religious action. To what

  388. God's saying is you're demonstrating your love for me by

  389. how you behave. And he said, when you decide you're

  390. going to go after other idols, when you're gonna decide

  391. that you're going to reject my law. Then he said

  392. there's going to be consequence of this, and to the

  393. point where he finally says, I'm going to set.

  394. This aside and I will hear your prayers here. I'm

  395. going to make it holy.

  396. The idea that God makes anything holy just means the

  397. word holy for us, we think means perfect behaves in

  398. a perfect way. Holy for God means it's set aside

  399. for me. It's not for you, it's for me now, right,

  400. And he says, so, I'm going to make this holy.

  401. When he says that He's made us holy, it doesn't

  402. say he's made us perfect, right, It just means that

  403. he set us aside for him. Now we're not for

  404. us anymore, we're for him.

  405. Yeah, set aside, consecrated right.

  406. Right, And so now it's mine. And if you pray here,

  407. I will hear you here, because there's going to be

  408. times when you're going to get into sin. There's gonna

  409. be times when you're gonna disobey me, and I might

  410. have to send some grasshoppers to wipe out your fields,

  411. or I might need to send some things to remind

  412. you that you're here for me and that we are

  413. supposed to be together, and remind you that your pride

  414. is coming up in front of us. He says, So,

  415. if these things happen, one of my favorite verses in

  416. the Bible. He says, then if my people who are

  417. called by my name will humble themselves and pray and

  418. seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, I'll

  419. hear from heaven, and I'll forgive their sins and restore

  420. their lands. My eyes will be open and my ears

  421. attended to every prayer made this place. I want to

  422. connect with you. And the minute you realize you're heading

  423. in the wrong direction, if and you realize you're my people,

  424. if you'll humble yourself, Remember James and Peter both tell us,

  425. humble yourself before God, and the due season he'll lift

  426. you up.

  427. Right.

  428. God resists the proud, but he gives grace to the humble.

  429. He said, humble yourself first, and then confess your sins.

  430. Right you say, humble yourself, pray seek my face. Turn

  431. from your wicked ways, he said, out here, and I'll

  432. forgive and I'll restore. It's one of my favorite verses

  433. in the Bible.

  434. So before I moved to Michigan, I worked at a

  435. church for seven and a half years at a small, little,

  436. tiny church. Then I went to a large church and

  437. I was there for like almost four years, and I

  438. started a college ministry for college students, and I was

  439. a college pastor. And they built a brand new building,

  440. educational building. They had a Christian school and we met

  441. on the third floor, so we kept on saying, Hey,

  442. meet on the third floor. Meet on the third floor.

  443. So I developed a name for a ministry, and we

  444. called a third floor, and I based it off of

  445. the temple. And what I said was is that, you know,

  446. I sort of gave the pitch that the closure you

  447. got to God you had to go up a level.

  448. So you know, there was sort of the outer courts

  449. at ground level, and then you you know, there's a

  450. set of stairs, then there was the other courts for

  451. the priests, and then there was another set of stairs,

  452. and on the third level was the most holy place.

  453. It was God's presence right. And then what I basically

  454. said was and this was a I'm giving you not

  455. the right explanation, but basically it was based on Hebrews

  456. four twelve, where it says, now we can go boldly

  457. into God's throne right and make our request, made no name,

  458. asking for grace and helping our time of need. And

  459. basically what I said was the moment that Jesus died

  460. on the cross, the veil ripped into I said, and

  461. then God's presence ushered out and into everybody. So God

  462. was not confined to an address. And so I said

  463. in that moment, I said, everybody was welcome to the

  464. third floor. That's what I said, right, I said, I said,

  465. it's an invitation that says everybody's not welcome to the

  466. third floor, right, And so I sort of pitched that.

  467. Everybody's like, oh, that's really cool, man, welcome to the

  468. third floor. So we've got on the third floor. Our

  469. ministry took off and went from nine students to like

  470. eighty five students in not a college town. Was really big, right.

  471. And then when the student Center was finally remodeled, we

  472. moved from the third floor of the educational wing down

  473. to the first floor of the and everybody on staff said, well,

  474. obviously you're going to change your name now, and I said, no, Well,

  475. why in the world would you ever call it third

  476. floor if you're gonna be me on the first floor.

  477. I'm like, you never got it, Like, did you were

  478. you listening? Are you? Did you go to Bible school

  479. the ghost? Right?

  480. The goal is the third floor?

  481. Pastor Rick? Yeah, you know, and so but yeah, that

  482. was the idea. So God's presence equal the third floor.

  483. So now we know that God did keep his promises.

  484. When Israel finally did totally defy him. Sometimes substantial time

  485. after this, God allowed Babylon to come in and destroy

  486. this temple. And for seventy years people did mock Israel,

  487. and they'd walked past this destroyed city and mock them

  488. and wonder why God did that. Then Nehemiah came back,

  489. They rebuild the city. They eventually rebuild the temple, and

  490. and and then it gets destroyed and then silent or

  491. then Herod King he builds it and it's destroyed. In

  492. eighty seventy there's never been another temple on the Temple

  493. mount again. Right now, there's a mosque where the temple

  494. used to sit in Jerusalem. But Paul tells us after

  495. the Cross, when God tore the veil in the temple

  496. from top to bottom, he literally did open the door

  497. for everybody to have access to God. Then Paul says,

  498. we are the temple. He said, don't you know that

  499. you're holy people, that God has made you the temple.

  500. So then glorify God in your body. Right, your body

  501. is the temple of God. Now, so if that's the case,

  502. you always qualify for that verse. If my people who

  503. are called my my name, you are His people right right,

  504. and you in your moment. You don't have to go

  505. to some holy place. God's called you and made you holy,

  506. and so you can go boldly before the throne of

  507. Grace and you qualify for this promise that you humble

  508. yourself and you pray, and you turn from your wicked ways,

  509. and you seek him, and he'll forgive us, and he'll

  510. restore your land right. And there's a lot of power there.

  511. So all the promises I believe that came along with

  512. obeying God, honoring God, the Temple, the blessings, the miracles

  513. that God did as a result of the Temple, I

  514. think every one of those is available to those that

  515. are followers of Christ now because we are the temple

  516. of God. Which then makes me think, I think a

  517. lot of times as Christians, boy, we sure do paint

  518. a lot of graffiti in God's temple. Yeah, we sure

  519. to do a lot of dumb things with God's temple. Now,

  520. you know, I would think we would think of our

  521. bodies and our decisions with our bodies, our life, the

  522. things we listen to, the things we do, the people

  523. that we're interacting with, who we sleep with, all that stuff.

  524. If we would realize that this literally is a temple

  525. of God. We sure do abuse it a lot.

  526. Sure, yeah, And I just want to say, maybe one

  527. of the closing thoughts could be this is such an

  528. unbelievably popular verse, isn't it. Then if my people, who

  529. already referenced it, right, then if my people who are

  530. called by my enable humble themselves and pray and seek

  531. my face and turn from the wicked ways, I would

  532. hear them from heaven, and I will forgive their sins

  533. and heal their land. It is definitely something that we

  534. always see when people say we need to pray for

  535. our nation, We need to pray as a people that

  536. we would, you know, turn back to God. And so

  537. we as as followers of Christ, need to always do

  538. our best to make sure that we are contributing to

  539. move God's kingdom forward so that we would always be

  540. a people corporately that would do our best to turn

  541. back to God. Because hey, the promise given back then

  542. is given by the same God who says the same things. Yeah, right,

  543. we just turned from our wicked ways. In any state

  544. that we find ourselves in, we humble ourselves, we recognize God,

  545. and then he will hear us. He will forgive our

  546. sins and heal our land.

  547. That's fantastic.

  548. That's a great, great gad verse. All right, well that's

  549. our time, so hopefully we will see you on Monday

  550. on the Bible.
