  1. You're listening to The Bible Guys, a podcast where a

  2. couple of friends talk about the Bible in fun, in

  3. practical ways. Hey, everybody, if this is your very first

  4. time joining, you have stumbled onto a wonderful podcast.

  5. What an amazing experience for you.

  6. Yes, we are so excited for you.

  7. Yes, it's going to be incredible if this is your

  8. first time.

  9. Wow, fuck up.

  10. We have the Bible guys, and uh, we're gonna jump

  11. into Proverbs that we'll continuing on with. And by the way,

  12. we haven't mentioned this in a long time, but we

  13. are walking through the highlights or the milestones of the

  14. Old Testament. That's correct, right, And and Proverbs is such

  15. you know, it is such a unique book of the

  16. Bible because it's not story driven, right, it's not. It's

  17. not like event driven or even you know, it's just

  18. a bunch of wisdom.

  19. It's a wise saying. That's what I like to call them,

  20. why saying.

  21. Yes, yes, So anyway, before we jump into that, we have.

  22. Like they're like ancient poster themes.

  23. Yes right, right, yes, yes, I agree, And they would

  24. chisel them in rock and then hang them on the

  25. walls maybe just like our posters. This is a segment

  26. that Desiree has put together called stump the pastor.

  27. Don't don't don't, don't don dom And this is from

  28. Alisha L.

  29. Hi, Alicia L.

  30. There you go.

  31. Okay, so nice whenever whenever people write notes to us, Yes,

  32. we were so Alicia. Sincerely, Alicia, thank you for trusting

  33. us with this question.

  34. We actually really mean that, sincerely.

  35. If you have any questions at all, you can email

  36. us at info at the Bible guys dot com and

  37. uh or you know, just respond on YouTube or you know,

  38. throw it in the comments somewhere and we will be

  39. glad to consider your question. So here's Alicia L's question.

  40. Can someone who has never been baptized still go to heaven?

  41. Oh?

  42. Good question. And by the way, this is a very

  43. common question.

  44. And wouldn't you say that this is one of the

  45. more debated questions among the different religions.

  46. Yeah, there's several denominations that would say, no, you can't

  47. go to heaven without being baptist, right, because that is

  48. what saves you, right. Yeah.

  49. Yeah, So and by the way, where would that belief

  50. come in? Well, I mean I know where I grew up, right,

  51. so I grew up in a denomination where they baptize infants, right,

  52. a very very traditional and.

  53. This is where it comes from, okay, right, right right, yeah, yeah,

  54. from Catholicism. Ancient Catholicism is what has driven the idea

  55. of baptism is required for salvation.

  56. Yeah.

  57. And so so if you if you wonder where that

  58. came from, you really sort of have to back up,

  59. and you you really have to zoom out to thirty

  60. thousand foot view. And it really comes down to who

  61. do you believe carries the authority. So when I grew up,

  62. we were sort of non practicing Catholics, and and and

  63. I and I would pop in and out of these

  64. you know, CCD classes and and uh, you know these

  65. different things that at my Catholic church, and and and

  66. we would you know, show up every once in a while,

  67. you know, to to to the church. But what I

  68. learned is is that uh, and if you google this

  69. you can find out find this out.

  70. Many Catholics actually don't even know this.

  71. But the Catholic Church decrees that if the Pope uh

  72. declares something is true, the actual verbiage is something like this.

  73. It is the same as if God himself speaks.

  74. The phrase is if he speaks ex cathedral. Well, so

  75. when the when the pope speaks about, hey, good mornings,

  76. sonny outside, that's not from God, that's just his opinion.

  77. But when he announces I'm speaking ex cathedral, which is rare,

  78. But when he speaks ex cathedra, that means this is

  79. the doctrine of the Church and is from God.

  80. Okay, and so the ex cathedra is what he would

  81. say is equivalent or equal to.

  82. Just the same as the Bible.

  83. That right, And it's because that's by the way, that

  84. stems from the belief of they would say Peter was

  85. the first pope. You know, the keys of the Kingdom

  86. of Heaven was given to nobody except for Peter. And

  87. then there's been, you know, a lineage of popes, and

  88. so our pope is connected to you know, he's the X,

  89. you know, whatever number in line he is something like that,

  90. and that's that's where that theory comes from. So so

  91. therefore we bet we zoom out, and we asked this question.

  92. It depends on who you believe has the authority. If

  93. you believe the Church has the authority, then you know

  94. that's a that's a more difficult question. If you believe

  95. the Bible has the authority, then then you know, you

  96. can take the Bible. And we always say the Bible

  97. is its own best commentary, right, take every single verse

  98. that we know about baptism. And so if if mankind

  99. comes along, instance, somebody like the pope and says, hey,

  100. we heard from God and this is what it is.

  101. So there's a difference between the uh, you know, the

  102. modern church and the postmodern church, right and and and

  103. so the modern church would say, hey, we have to

  104. we have to know everything there is to know.

  105. There's no mystery of God. We have to figure out

  106. all things.

  107. And they had they had to answer this question, which

  108. is do babies go to heaven? And that's where this

  109. doctrine came from. And they were trying to answer the

  110. question what happens if it infant dies? And I think this,

  111. I think this was I think this didn't come into

  112. like I mean, it was hundreds and hundreds of years.

  113. And it was a.

  114. Constantine for Constantine sid like three hundred three twelve. I think.

  115. Okay, yeah, so hundreds of years later, after Christianity began,

  116. after Christianity began, they came up with this theory.

  117. Yeah, so that wouldn't be the modern church by the way.

  118. Oh yeah, that's right. I actually thought it was like

  119. sixteen hundred years later.

  120. Oh yeah, yeah, no, it was. So Constantine was getting ready.

  121. It was right before Constantine became emperor. He was getting

  122. ready to go up in a war. He had about

  123. twenty five thousand soldiers. He's going up against his arch

  124. rival as they were competing to take over Rome and

  125. the Roman Empire. And he was going up against an

  126. army that was more than twice his size. And he

  127. had a dream that he heard Jesus speak. It was

  128. the night before the war, the battle. He had a

  129. dream and he saw in the sky a flaming sword

  130. and a cross, and he heard in his dream Jesus say,

  131. with these symbols, go and conquer. So up to that point,

  132. Christianity was illegal in the Roman Empire to the point

  133. of death. And then he announces, Jesus told me that

  134. if we go with the cross and the sword, we're

  135. going to win. We're all Christians now, And so he

  136. had the entire army baptized. Yeah, because he didn't know

  137. how he became a Christian, right, he had no idea

  138. alls he knew was that we were executing people because

  139. they got baptized. And so now everybody gets baptized, all

  140. in the same day. And then they went out and

  141. they won. They won the war. That's how he became emperor. Yeah,

  142. and so then he gets back to Rome and he goes,

  143. guess what, we're all Christians now, and they started baptizing,

  144. but that baptism for infants. Then they began to because

  145. they didn't have a solid doctrinal understanding. They began to say, well,

  146. if you get if you go to heaven because of

  147. being baptized, which isn't true, then we better baptize our

  148. babies because we need to. And of course at that

  149. point you can't dunk a baby. And so they took

  150. the Jewish tradition of sprinkling of anointing with oil and

  151. they use that as their process. So that's how it happened. So, yeah,

  152. it was in the three hundreds.

  153. Okay, well, first of all, I didn't know that's when

  154. baptism was connected to it.

  155. I did know that story.

  156. In fact, do you know the part of the story

  157. where the Roman soldiers get baptized without.

  158. The right arm? Do you know that? Yeah?

  159. So The rest of that story is he had baptized

  160. the entire Roman army at the time, but had them.

  161. Oh oh yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

  162. He had them hold their right arm above the.

  163. Water because that's the fighting army. He didn't want that

  164. sanctified where they'd feel guilty about Yeah yeah fighting.

  165. Baptized the entire army except for the right arms, which

  166. is crazy.

  167. So yeah, but I did not know.

  168. So that's the time when the church shifted was because

  169. at that point then Christianity became legal and he began

  170. appointing his own bishops and stuff. Right, So then it

  171. just kind of it faded after that, that's when it

  172. began to be embraced as that's the mainstream is baptism

  173. is essential. But let's go back to her question. Alicia

  174. asked about is it possible to go to heaven without

  175. being baptized. The answer is emphatically yes.

  176. Correct.

  177. The way we know that that's true is in Luke

  178. chapter twenty three, Jesus is on the cross and there's

  179. a criminal on either side of Jesus, and the one

  180. criminal mocks Jesus, but the other criminal says this, if

  181. it's possible, would you take me to paradise with you,

  182. and Jesus said today you'll be with me in paradise.

  183. So there's no record of them both hopping off the

  184. cross and Jesus baptizing this guy. He didn't do it. It

  185. was a belief component. Right, there's this thing, and this

  186. is consistent as you read through the Book of Romans.

  187. The Book of Romans is the strongest I believe doctrinal

  188. book in the Bible, and maybe Romans and Hebrews, right,

  189. but in Romans it's very very clear. Like in Romans

  190. chapter ten, it mentions you have to believe in your

  191. heart and confess with your mouth. So you confess your sins,

  192. you confess that Jesus's Lord says there he's the King.

  193. And then you believe in your heart that God raising

  194. from and you will be safe.

  195. And whoever calls upon the name of the Lord shall

  196. be saved.

  197. That's right. And it doesn't say plus all these other things.

  198. So there are passages where sometimes it gets a little confusing.

  199. The Book of Mark, for instance, the Book of Acts

  200. when they say what do we need to do in

  201. Acts chapter one or two, and Peter says, you need

  202. to repent of your sins and be baptized.

  203. Right, and he wasn't and he wasn't right, because you

  204. could read that as both are required.

  205. Right, right. Baptism comes after repentance always, right, right. Baptism

  206. comes after salvation always, every single time they declare I

  207. do I have trusted Christ, I am trusting Christ, then

  208. they get baptized. So baptism is the outward symbol of

  209. that internal right.

  210. And by the way, that's that's another thing too. So

  211. I mean, so what I was trying to originally get

  212. at is the belief of.

  213. A child being baptized.

  214. But by the way, I'm saying this because I was

  215. baptized as an infant, right were you?

  216. You weren't, Yeah, you weren't.

  217. I was. I was born to a committed family of pagans.

  218. That's right, that's right, that's right.

  219. So, yeah, you're dad didn't get saved till he's what

  220. forty Yeah, yeah, something like that. So anyway, my so,

  221. my family had had them all baptized, and in most

  222. most people that I know, that one you know, hey,

  223. will you baptize my infant?

  224. My baby?

  225. You know, my grandchild was born. I told my daughter,

  226. we have to hurry up and get this child baptized. Well,

  227. they don't even really understand like what that really means.

  228. So the doctrine of the church and this is this

  229. is maybe where I'm getting confused. I think maybe this

  230. came later, right, because because there was an explanation of

  231. how there is an actual they the Catholic Church would

  232. decree that there's an original there's a removal of the

  233. original sin of Adam during baptism. Maybe that was qualified later.

  234. Maybe that's why I'm getting confused. But anyway, or maybe not,

  235. but anyway, the uh, but that's what they would say,

  236. it happens. But most people who are my friends, they're like, what, like,

  237. they don't know that.

  238. All they know is I have a baby. It's emotional.

  239. Let me hurry up and get a baptized because I

  240. want to make sure they're okay that they go to heaven.

  241. But the Bible says every verse about salvation, every single

  242. instance about baptism, every single one takes place after a person,

  243. it's their faith and trust in Jesus Christ. There is

  244. not a single incident in the Bible where somebody gets

  245. baptized before that happens, right, or an instruction. It's not

  246. even it's not even it's not even that we're looking

  247. for examples. We're talking about even instruction and so and so.

  248. It is pretty clear that baptism is meant after a

  249. person trusts Christ.

  250. And so therefore we believe.

  251. That if if an infant dies, you know, let's just

  252. say an infant, you know, is eight months old or

  253. something and has this tragic thing happen or something like that,

  254. we would come up with the doctrine of there's an

  255. agent of accountability, right, yes, where if the child is

  256. not old enough to reject Christ, then then then that

  257. child has not rejected Christ and therefore would be protected

  258. and under the care.

  259. And love of God. It is.

  260. It is, there's an accountability age where a person has

  261. a chance to either reject the truth of Christ or

  262. not pursue the truth of Christ or you know, or

  263. those types of things. They have to be old enough

  264. to wrestle with that decision.

  265. So there you go. Thank you. I've said all that

  266. I need to say.

  267. Thank you. And that's that's the longest response we've given

  268. to anybody so far.

  269. Oh wow, we're at thirteen minutes. Yeah, by the way,

  270. that's not true. We have actually gone longer. We've gone

  271. just as long.

  272. Okay, yeah, because doesn't say do we need to extend

  273. it out so that she gets the longest sale time record?

  274. Yeah, so there you go, l thank you, thank you

  275. for asking.

  276. That's fantastic. Yes, there's so much more to say about that,

  277. but we should stop there.

  278. Yep.

  279. Okay, So we continue in Proverbs chapter twenty four, and

  280. I have no transition on this one. I looked off

  281. through this one I could. Yeah. Yeah, So twenty four

  282. verse one is where we're at, and uh, we're going

  283. to read through this whole passage is kind of long,

  284. so we're just going to jump on it here.

  285. Okay.

  286. It says don't envy people. By the way that.

  287. That question that Alicia asked us, it felt like there

  288. was a lot of pressure to it, but vers uver

  289. ten and proverb says if you fail under pressure, your

  290. strength is too small.

  291. Oh there we didn't yeah, and so standing strong yeah

  292. in their Yeah, good job, Chris. Let me try this again.

  293. First one, Readers don't envy evil people or desire their

  294. company for their hearts plot violence and their words always

  295. stir up trouble. A house is built by wisdom and

  296. becomes strong through good sense, through knowledge. Its rooms are

  297. filled with all sorts of precious riches and valuables. The

  298. wise are mightier than the strong, and those with knowledge

  299. grow stronger and stronger. So don't go to war without

  300. wise guidance. Victory depends on having many advisors. Wisdom is

  301. too lofty for fools. Among leaders at the city gate,

  302. they have nothing to say. A person who plans evil

  303. will get a reputation as a troublemaker. The schemes of

  304. a fool are sinful. Everyone to test a mocker. If

  305. you fail under pressure, your strength is too small. Rescue

  306. those who are unjustly sentenced to die. Save them as

  307. they stagger to their death. Don't excuse yourself by saying, look,

  308. we didn't know. For God understands all hearts, and he

  309. sees you. He who guards your soul knows you well

  310. er knows you knew. Oh, there you go. He will

  311. repay all people as their actions deserve. My child, eat honey,

  312. for it is good, and the honeycomb is sweet to

  313. the taste, And the same way wisdom is sweet to

  314. your soul. If you find it, you'll have a bright

  315. future and your hopes will not be cut short. Don't

  316. wait in ambush at the home of the godly, and

  317. don't raid the house where the godly live. The godly

  318. may trips seven times, but they will get up again.

  319. But one disaster is enough to overthrow the wicked. Don't

  320. rejoice when your enemies fall. Don't be happy when they stumble,

  321. for the Lord will be displeased with you, will turn

  322. his anger away from them. Don't fret because of evildoers.

  323. Don't envy the wicked for people. For evil people have

  324. no future. The light of the wicked will be snuffed out.

  325. My child. Fear the Lord, Lord and the King. Don't

  326. associate with rebels, for a disaster will hit them suddenly.

  327. Who knows what punishment will come from the Lord and

  328. the King. Here are some further sayings of the wise.

  329. It is wrong to show favoritism when passing judgment. A

  330. judge who says to the wicked you are innocent will

  331. be cursed by many people and denounced by the nations.

  332. But it will go well for those who convict the guilty.

  333. Rich blessings will be showered on them. An honest answer

  334. is like a kiss of friendship. Do your planning and

  335. prepare your fields before building your house don't testify against

  336. your neighbors without cause, don't lie about them, don't say,

  337. now I can pay them back for what they've done

  338. to me, I'll get even with them. I walked by

  339. the fields of a lazy person, the vineyard of one

  340. with no common sense. I saw that it was overgrown

  341. with nettles, and it was covered with weeds, and its

  342. walls were broken down. And then as I looked and

  343. thought about it, I learned this lesson. A little extra sleep,

  344. a little more slumber, a little folding of the hands

  345. to rest, and then poverty will pounce on you like

  346. a bandit. Scared city would attack you like an armed robber.

  347. Wow, scarcity will attack you like an armed robber.

  348. Yeah.

  349. Again, very poetic, very very visual.

  350. And wow, a little sleep, a little slumber, a little

  351. folding of the hands to rest.

  352. Yeah. You know, Solomon really talks a lot about laziness,

  353. doesn't he.

  354. Yeah.

  355. There's a lot of verses in there that say, hey,

  356. work hard.

  357. Yeah, And you.

  358. Know, it just goes back to the fact that we

  359. have to realize we are made to work well.

  360. The verse we read a verse was it yesterday or

  361. the day before? Where the guy goes, oh, there might

  362. be a lion in the street. You know, I better

  363. stay home, right, Yeah, I'm not going to go to

  364. work today. There might be something bad out there. Right.

  365. There's all kinds of excuses not to work here. It's

  366. I'm a little sleepy, I need to not work whatever.

  367. He has this belief. Solomon has this very strong belief

  368. hard work is going to pay off and you're going

  369. to have a house full of riches at some point. Yeah.

  370. And laziness is always going to cause everything to fall apart.

  371. Yeah.

  372. And then he says that a wise man, a godly man,

  373. is going to work hard and then if he's wise,

  374. his house will be full of wealth. He ties wealth

  375. and hard work with wisdom. And then he says this passage,

  376. I'm glad you what's up? Because he says, where's the

  377. verse that says that they'll fall seven times and they

  378. get back up again? The righteous man falls seven times

  379. and gets back up.

  380. I know you read it. I know I read it,

  381. But you also read thirty four verses.

  382. Yes, it's in here.

  383. Yeah.

  384. Anyways, I always read that because wealth takes risk, right, right,

  385. and so a lot of us we don't build the

  386. kind of wealth we could build because we're afraid to

  387. make the kind of investment it takes to get there.

  388. But it's interesting. A wise person will have the ability

  389. to try and try and try and try, and even

  390. if they fail a few times, they're going to get

  391. back up and keep going. A foolish person, oftentimes, he says,

  392. there's crooked people and they get out and take advantage

  393. of others and that's how they get wealthy, or foolish

  394. people and lazy people just won't even take the steps

  395. necessary to build wealth. Right, and so there is this

  396. wisdom will carry you through and help you beyond.

  397. Just it's verse sixteen sixteen. I just know.

  398. The godly may trip seven times, but they'll get up again.

  399. And so there is this idea that if you're godly

  400. and you're wise. Sure, now he's not guaranteeing that life

  401. is going to be smooth and easy, but he is

  402. saying that you're going to be able to have the

  403. wisdom and the strength and the discernment to stand back

  404. up and try again, and then stand back up and

  405. try again. So if you've hit a wall financially, there's

  406. a path out of this problem. And then if you're

  407. a godly person, and you're doing things the way God

  408. says to do. There's a path forward for you to

  409. maybe build wealth in the future where you couldn't build

  410. it prior. Right, But it's that lazy person who just

  411. he contrasts that with a little extra sleep, a little

  412. more slumber, a little folding the hands of the rest,

  413. and poverty pounds on you like a bandit. Right. So

  414. there's the lazy person goes Nope, I give up. I'm

  415. not going to try anymore, versus the person who says, no,

  416. I'm going to keep working and I'm going to lean

  417. into it. And with that, along with that, if you

  418. if you compound that with wisdom, that's going to be

  419. like a multiplier for you. And then that's why he

  420. says a house is built by wisdom and becomes strong

  421. through good sense, through knowledge. Its rooms are filled with

  422. all sorts of pressures, riches, and valuables. In verse three

  423. and four, Yeah right, yeah, you know there's another thing

  424. in here.

  425. He indicates it twice. I think maybe more so. Don't

  426. go to war with that wise guidance. Victory depends on

  427. many advisors. And then he says, where's the verse where

  428. he says, don't build your house. Oh, verse twenty seven,

  429. do your planning and prepare your fields before building your house.

  430. Yeah, and so you know there's a there's a component.

  431. Of of like, hey, do your due diligence right, like

  432. plan get it, get get godly advice. Uh, you know,

  433. plan ahead. Doesn't Jesus say the same thing. Nobody builds

  434. a tower without first counting the cost. Nobody takes thirty

  435. thousand warriors against one hundred thousand, Right, you got to

  436. you got to count the cost before you before you

  437. move forward.

  438. And that's what you have to do.

  439. And of course Jesus was talking about counting the cost

  440. of following him, right, But so you got to count

  441. the cost of what.

  442. It really means. And and so you know, there is

  443. a definite hard work theme here.

  444. There's definite planning, but it also points to to your point,

  445. prosperity and h and uh.

  446. It's not a guarantee, but this is how life typically works.

  447. That's that's what he's doing. I love that verse. I

  448. was going to comment on it. It's I think my

  449. favorite verse in the passage in this whole chapter is

  450. do your planning and prepare your fields before you build,

  451. build your house? Yeah, he's saying, there's a logical order

  452. to your work. Right, duties don't conflict, so there's going

  453. to be a logical order your fields, preparing your fields,

  454. especially in those days. If you didn't plant during planting season,

  455. you're not going to have anything to eat in harvest season,

  456. you're gonna be in trouble. So, yes, shelter will provide comfort,

  457. but preparing your fields and preparing for the future is

  458. more important than your immediate comfort. So if you have

  459. to sleep outside for a month while you're plowing your

  460. field and planting your harvest, then that's a short bit

  461. of suffering for long term returns. And so you do

  462. the things, the hard things first, and then you go

  463. ahead and build a house. Not that the house isn't

  464. hard to build, but the house is a comfort issue.

  465. There's a safety component to it, but it's a comfort

  466. issue mostly, whereas the food thing is stay alive, and

  467. so don't hurry up. If you spend the spring building

  468. your house, then you're going to have a big house,

  469. and everybody's gonna be hungry in the fall and winter. Right,

  470. have anything, right, and so there is always an order

  471. to wise living, and you want to do the right

  472. thing at the right time, and that that's a big

  473. part of that wisdom.

  474. Hey, speaking of you know, wisdom phrases, you mentioned this

  475. just a few seconds ago. You said, duty is never conflict.

  476. So that is one of your wise phrases that you

  477. always mentioned.

  478. He never conflicts?

  479. Do you never go? Yeah, So explain that. What do

  480. you mean when you say those things?

  481. There's always a priority, There's always something more important. You know,

  482. if you're confronted with an issue and you have seemingly

  483. three or four responsibilities, three or four duties, there's always

  484. one that's most important, and you have to do that

  485. one first. I've told the story before. I was getting

  486. ready to go to Tanzania. I had a meeting of

  487. our directional leadership team and I found out my daughter

  488. on her very first day she could have a customer

  489. as an esthetician, her customers canceled. She was alone, So

  490. my daughter she was sad. My wife said, Jeff, duties

  491. never conflict, man, right, because she hates that phrase, And

  492. I said, you know, you're right. My daughter is more

  493. important than this meeting, and so I'm gonna There were

  494. other very competent people in the room that are more

  495. than capable of leading that meeting and making good decisions.

  496. But my daughter will only ever have her first customer

  497. one time, right, And so I was her first customer

  498. right that day, and I chose that I walked away

  499. from a very important meeting because my daughter's more important

  500. duties and never conflict there, you go, right, that's what

  501. that is. And so there's a right order. There's a

  502. right order to life. And if you if you figure

  503. that out, So my wife feels conflict because she feels

  504. like both of those are equally important, right, right, Both

  505. of those are important. But when you really dig in

  506. and go which one's most important one? My daughter's most

  507. important meetings are going to happen again next week and

  508. the week after that and the week after that. But

  509. my daughter is only ever going to have a customer

  510. first customer one time. And so that was the thing

  511. there that when you begin to sort life out that way,

  512. what is the most important thing? Do the most important thing,

  513. then do the next most important thing, then do the

  514. And that's what he's saying here, prepare your fields first,

  515. plan first, prepare your fields next, then build a house.

  516. There's an order. All three of those things are important.

  517. But you do them, You do them in the right order,

  518. and life is going to make more sense. You're gonna

  519. have a lot more peace because I can't do everything,

  520. so I'm always going to disappoint somebody. I'm always going

  521. to have a thing that's unfinished because they can't do everything,

  522. so I have to do the most important things.

  523. Yeah.

  524. Well, it says a house is versionumber three. A house

  525. is built by wisdom and becomes strong through good sense.

  526. Good sense.

  527. Yep, yeah, it's it's awesome. That's great.

  528. Well, that's a good way to wrap up our thoughts

  529. and hopefully we will see you tomorrow on the Bible.

  530. Guys,
