  1. You're listening to the Bible Guys, a podcast where a

  2. couple of friends talk about the Bible in fun, in

  3. practical ways. Hey, everybody, welcome to the Bible.

  4. Guys. We're back.

  5. We're back, better than ever. Oh man, we are better

  6. than ever.

  7. Can you imagine? Yeah, you imagine how much better we

  8. would be than ever?

  9. If what?

  10. I don't know, Well, you know, I think I'm just hoping.

  11. I think I told you this, be honest.

  12. One of my favorite phrases of one of the trainers

  13. at our church, because there's a gym there's an HFP

  14. Heritage Fitness Project is as you're working out and you're

  15. like sweating, and you're like and you're like, you know,

  16. losing motivation, he goes, he goes one.

  17. Percent better today.

  18. Everybody's one percent better today, And so it's like, wow,

  19. that's a great phrase.

  20. You don't have to work out times. I know, I know,

  21. and you are better than you will.

  22. Yes, that's correct, which means you can triple yourself in

  23. a year.

  24. Or not, but yeah or not. I like that. I

  25. like the sentiment.

  26. Yeah, the sentiment's good.

  27. So we don't know, we're better than ever today, but

  28. we're going to give it our best shot.

  29. We are, that's correct. So we're going to start.

  30. With a yawn. Yeah, apparently so lighting. We just said

  31. better than ever and he starts yawning like I couldn't.

  32. Carry any load lighting if you know me, Yes, any

  33. low lighting makes me on.

  34. Yeah.

  35. Okay, so this is who's most likely most likely?

  36. And we love this segment.

  37. Yes, So the goal is just to read the question.

  38. We'll take turns of reading them, and.

  39. Then we'll just have to decide who's most likely to

  40. do this Jeff or Chris?

  41. Yes, okay, I'll go the first. Go first.

  42. Who's most likely to be the first one to sign

  43. up to go skydiving?

  44. We've already done this one like this about skydiving before,

  45. so it has to be me. Yeah, Well, because you

  46. went skydiving.

  47. Well, I've gone three times and your insurance prevents you.

  48. From Yeah, insurance won't let me do it. Yeah, we

  49. have a key man policy and it specifically forbids me

  50. from skydiving right now. Because I wanted to go with

  51. my son when he turned eighteen, I couldn't go.

  52. Yeah, and I've done it three times, and honestly, the

  53. last time I went, the last.

  54. Time I went crazy.

  55. The last time I went, I remember literally jumping out,

  56. and as I'm jumping out, I remember thinking to myself,

  57. this would be the last time I do this. Yeah,

  58. I've done this three times, two twice before. It was

  59. almost like uh huh yeah, literally, I can't believe that

  60. I felt that.

  61. Way, Wow, but I did.

  62. Yeah. There are times of chime. Okay, who's most likely

  63. to go back to school and get their PhD in

  64. something random?

  65. That would definitely be you.

  66. Yeah, you know what. I was accepted in a doctoral

  67. program this year and then paused and decided not to do it.

  68. Oh well yeah, yeah, So I went through the whole process,

  69. and then the day I was supposed to register, yeah,

  70. for classes, I decided not to. It's just my schedule

  71. is so hard. I couldn't imagine adding yep, that extra

  72. work to it.

  73. Well, it's actually why I stopped my master's degree.

  74. Yeah.

  75. I was working for to get my master's when my

  76. kids were young, and it was so unbelievably difficult that

  77. I realized that my masters wouldn't at the church current

  78. church I was at. It wouldn't pay me anymore, It's

  79. not that type of church, and it would just be bragging. Right,

  80. So I got my master's and it was like, it

  81. was like, why am I doing this? I'm pretty sure? Like,

  82. you know, knowledge is good obviously, Yeah, but I can

  83. gain knowledge without working my tail off like this, right, I'd.

  84. Have to think. So I like to think I's equivalent. Yeah,

  85. well here thirty years later, right, So but yeah, so

  86. I passed on one this year. But yeah, that's good.

  87. Okay.

  88. Number three, who's most likely to climb Mount Everest? I

  89. already know immediately who this is. That's definitely you.

  90. I think climbing Mount Everest is the dumbest thing I've

  91. ever heard. It is so dumb.

  92. Well, hey, a lot of people died doing it.

  93. It's hence the dumb right. I told you I have

  94. no compassion.

  95. But you know, I saw the movies, you know, people

  96. like they go up and then they freeze and then

  97. they die, and are people.

  98. Are like, oh, that's so sad. I'm like, that's what

  99. they deserve.

  100. That's what they deserve because because they have the courage

  101. to try to do something nobody else can do.

  102. Would you think was gonna happen?

  103. Well, some people make it, some people do but guess what,

  104. Oh did you hear about the tragy amount Everest, would

  105. you think was going to happen?

  106. Yeah, okay, and you signed up for it, so so

  107. believe it or not. I'm not a big fan of

  108. thin air. Yeah, right, So I don't like to do that.

  109. Like we were in Chad night, were in the h

  110. in right on the border of Tibet in China, and

  111. the village that we were in, it was all Tibetans,

  112. was at a little over eleven thousand feet it was

  113. eleven or twelve thousand feet, and just walking around because

  114. we were only there for two days and so you

  115. don't really have much time to acclimatize at that at

  116. that point, and so then there was a out of breath. Yeah,

  117. so just kind of huffing and puffing a little bit.

  118. And there was a fifteen hundred year old or older, yeah,

  119. fifteen hundred year old temple at the top of this

  120. hill in this village, and I'm looking at it, going

  121. I want to go see it, right, right, And so

  122. we get about a third of the way up on

  123. the stairs and I'm like, ah, I don't want to

  124. go see it that bad, right right right, And it

  125. was just it was just the thin air. So I'm

  126. not a big fan of thin air, but I do

  127. have a desire to do the trek to base Camp Foreverest.

  128. Oh. And that's like a.

  129. Ten day hike from LASA and you go up over

  130. eighteen thousand feet before you get to the end of it,

  131. and it takes like ten days to do. And it's

  132. bucket list before I turn fifty five, which means I

  133. only have a year and a half left, two years.

  134. I don't think you're going to do that.

  135. I'm gonna do it. I'm gonna find a way. I

  136. already I already have the sherpa. He's a friend of mine. Yeah,

  137. and he told me he'd put it together if I

  138. would go. So I got it. I got yeah. Yeah,

  139. So twenty twenty five is the year I'm gonna get

  140. to where I can do it. I have a bad knee,

  141. so that's my one issue. But if I can get

  142. that fixed, and I think I want to do it.

  143. Yeah, I've done pair of sailing, I've done rock climbing,

  144. I've been repelling.

  145. Hire a helicopter and fly up there that I could

  146. do that too.

  147. There you go.

  148. But yeah, I've done skydiving, I've done I've done some

  149. crazy things for some reason. I do not want to

  150. fight nature. Okay, that's that's what I don't want to do.

  151. Don't want to fight.

  152. Don't want to bend it to your will. Okay. Who's

  153. most likely to start a petting zoo in their backyard?

  154. You are? You are?

  155. Be me?

  156. You are.

  157. Yeah.

  158. And by the way, my wife would love it. And

  159. I'm not just talking about love love. I mean love, love, love,

  160. love love. She would love it.

  161. Okay.

  162. You know, we have deer in our backyard.

  163. Our deer come and my wife puts together these little

  164. bird feeders and they love the corn out of the

  165. bird feeder, and then the squirrels do too. And at

  166. one point in time she was spending like three hundred

  167. dollars a month to feed the deer. And I said,

  168. and I said, I said, have you totaled it up?

  169. She's like, no, I didn't total it up.

  170. I told her. And she's like, oh, I better stop that.

  171. Yeah.

  172. I'm like I think you better, yeah yeah.

  173. And man, those deer were fat.

  174. Yeah, we stopped because who can afford that? That's a

  175. car payment?

  176. Almost all right?

  177. And then finally, how about this one?

  178. Who's most likely to become a part time superhero.

  179. You are, I am too.

  180. You are. Yeah, that's me running around the Cape Crusader. Yeah,

  181. running around your long John's with a towel around your neck.

  182. I wonder if it's I wonder if it's implying superpowers,

  183. because I don't think I would do it without superpowers, right, because.

  184. I wouldn't do it like Batman style.

  185. No, because I hate Batman. You know that, I hate

  186. him so so the hates a strong word.

  187. That's a strong word. You know what.

  188. You know what I don't like about Batman.

  189. He's the most believable of the superheroes.

  190. Well, that's what my wife would say. Yeah, my wife

  191. actually likes the non powered superheroes.

  192. I like Batman, I know.

  193. You do know the thing I don't like about Batman is.

  194. That they make him do unrealistic things and he's only

  195. a guy. Like did you see the the beginning of

  196. the of what's the Justice League movie? When he's when

  197. he's when he's dragging behind this car. He's just a guy, bro,

  198. He's just a guy. There's no way he could possibly

  199. do the things that they had him do.

  200. Oh no, I saw it in the movie. He did it. Yeah,

  201. it was crazy speaking of not being able to possibly

  202. just being a guy could possibly do these things. Elisha

  203. does a ton of miracles, and the people start recognizing this,

  204. and even the kings start to pay attention to him.

  205. So it's possible for just a guy, he's just right,

  206. just a guy to do amazing things.

  207. And so does he say, like I'm Batman, So does

  208. he say.

  209. I'm Elisha, I'm a prophet, I'm a profit. So in

  210. Second King's chapter three, there's a war between Israel and Moab.

  211. At this point, King Misha of Moab was a sheep breeder.

  212. He used to pay the King of Israel an annual

  213. tribute of one hundred thousand lambs and the wool of

  214. one hundred thousand rams holy Cow. But after Ahab's death,

  215. the King of Moab rebelled against the King of Israel.

  216. So King Joram promptly mustered the army of Israel and

  217. marchik from Samaria. On the way, he sent this message

  218. to King Jehashaphat of Judah, the King of Moab has

  219. rebelled against me. Will you join me in battle against him?

  220. Jehosaphat replied, why, of course, you and I are as one.

  221. My troops are your troops, and my horses are your horses.

  222. And then Jehashuapad asked what route will we take? We

  223. will attack from the wilderness of Edom Joram, who replied

  224. the King of Edom and his troops joined them, and

  225. all three armies traveled along a roundabout route through the

  226. wilderness for seven days, but there was no water for

  227. the men or the animals. What should we do? The

  228. King of Israel cried out, The Lord has brought the

  229. three of us here to let them King of Moab

  230. defeat us. But King Jehoshaphah and to Judah asked, is

  231. there no prophet of the Lord with us? If there is,

  232. we can ask what the Lord what to do through him.

  233. One of King Joram's officers replied, Elishah's son of Sefat

  234. is here. He used to be elijah personal assistant. Jehashaphat said, yes,

  235. the Lord speaks through him. So the kings of Israel,

  236. Judah and Edom went to consult with Elisha. Why are

  237. you coming to me, Elisha asked the King of Israel.

  238. Go to the pagan prophets of your father and mother.

  239. But King Joram of Israel said no, for it was

  240. the Lord who called us three kings here, only to

  241. be defeated by the King of Moab. Elisha applied, as

  242. surely as the Lord Almighty lives, whom I serve, I

  243. wouldn't even bother with you, except from my respect for

  244. King Jehashapada Judah. Now bring me someone who can play

  245. the harp. While the harp was being played, the power

  246. of the Lord came upon Elisha, and he said, this

  247. is what the Lord says. This dry valley will be

  248. filled with pools of water. You will see neither wind

  249. nor rain, says the Lord. But this valley will be

  250. filled with water. You will have plenty for yourselves and

  251. your cattle and other animals. But this was only a

  252. simple thing for the Lord, for he will make you

  253. victorious over the army of Moab. You will conquer the

  254. best of their towns, even the fortified ones. You will

  255. cut down all their good trees and stop all their springs,

  256. and ruin all their good land with stones. The next day,

  257. at about the time when the morning sacrifice was offered,

  258. water suddenly appeared. It was the flowing It was flowing

  259. from the direction of Edom, and soon there was water everywhere. Meanwhile,

  260. when the people of Moab heard about the three armies

  261. marching against them, they mobilized every man who was old

  262. enough to strap on a sword, and they stationed themselves

  263. along their border. But when they got up the next morning,

  264. the sun was shining across the water, making a pier

  265. red to the Moabites like blood. It's blood, the Mobites exclaimed,

  266. the three armies must have attacked and killed each other.

  267. Let's go, Madam Moab and collecked the plunder. But when

  268. the Moabites arrived at the Israelite camp, the army of

  269. Israel rushed out and attacked them until they turned and ran.

  270. The army Israel chased them into the land of Moab,

  271. destroying everything as they went. They destroyed the towns, covered

  272. their good land with stones, stopped up all the springs,

  273. and cut down all the good trees. Finally, only kure

  274. Har Harrisath and its stone walls were left, but men

  275. was slings surrounded and attacked it. When the king of

  276. Moab saw that he was losing the battle, he led

  277. seven hundred of his swordsmen in a desperate attempt to

  278. break through the enemy lines. The king of Eden but

  279. they failed. Then the king of Moab took his oldest son,

  280. who would have been the next king, has sacrificed him

  281. as a burnt offering on the wall. So there was

  282. great anger against Israel, and the Israelites withdrew and returned

  283. to their own land.

  284. But I know, there you go, I know, so you know,

  285. I love thee the note on the Life Application Study

  286. Bible that talks about when it says I ruined they

  287. ruined the land with stones, it meant that they scattered

  288. stones across the land so that it wouldn't be fit

  289. for plowing, because you can't plow with stones. So they

  290. would have people just take all the fields that were

  291. you know, valuable, a valuable commodity. It was, you know,

  292. they were you know, plowed, they were fertile, they were

  293. ready to grow crops.

  294. And but that's what that means.

  295. They would take stones and they would just mess up

  296. all and again what it is is, you know, it

  297. seems very harsh obviously, but Ahab would have been completely

  298. powerful and because of his strong rule, he was actually

  299. he had conquered Moab, and so they paid tribute to

  300. Ahab because of his absolute strength and power.

  301. But when ahab died.

  302. We've seen this before, right, when when when a president

  303. changes hands, he goes from a strong president to a

  304. president that appears weak. Right, all of a sudden, we

  305. we have war in Russia. So so anyway, the point

  306. is is that that's that's what's happening. And so he's uh,

  307. he's he's going against uh, you know, and he's rebelling,

  308. and he's saying, I'm not going to pay this tribute.

  309. I'm gonna in fact, I'm gonna go to war. I'm

  310. going to break and gain our freedom again.

  311. And uh.

  312. And what Israel is doing and what God is helping

  313. Israel do, is making a statement that says, you're not

  314. going to defeat or rise up against the the nation

  315. of the God of Israel. So this is a statement

  316. about about the people who serve God. It's not just

  317. a statement about kings and power. It's a statement about

  318. don't mess with God is what it is right. And

  319. so therefore they're like, Okay, if you want to rebel

  320. against us, then you're.

  321. Going to pay. So they filled all the wells.

  322. They so they got shovels and and and or whatever

  323. they were using, I suppose filled with rocks, and so

  324. they're so they're filling the wells to where they basically.

  325. Made the land not unusable. Yeah, pretty much. Yeah, and uh.

  326. And by the way, another thing about the life application

  327. study Bible is uh, as soon as you see one map,

  328. you understand everything, right. So so this is as many

  329. people understand, the Sea of Galilee's on the northern part

  330. of Israel, the Dead Seas on the southern part of Israel,

  331. and then the Jordan River sort of connects the two,

  332. and so Moab is on the east side directly east

  333. do east of the Dead Sea, and so and so

  334. then the the wilderness of Edom is actually just south

  335. of the Dead Sea, right, So they would have gone

  336. from the from the west side of the Dead Sea

  337. down underneath the Dead Sea and then up to Moab

  338. on the other side.

  339. That's right.

  340. Is that cool?

  341. Yeah? And so that would be in what is modern

  342. day Jordan now.

  343. Yeah, which which, by the way, you were there like

  344. a couple months a.

  345. Yeah, I'll be there again shortly. But yeah. So that's

  346. as you're heading from Aman down towards Petra. Is that

  347. this is on the way, although Petra didn't exist in

  348. these days. This is eight hundred and fifty years before

  349. Jesus and Petro was was going on in the time

  350. of Jesus that those Navitaeans were about the same time

  351. as Jesus. So but anyways, this is a pretty rugged

  352. area and a rough area, and these Moabites are wicked people,

  353. evil people. So a lot of times people ask man Alive,

  354. it just seems unreasonable that, you know, God would would

  355. fight all these tribes around Israel all the time, and

  356. that God would would help Israel wipe them out, and

  357. it just seems okay. So when this Moabite king, after

  358. he's done fighting the Israelites and realizes we're probably going

  359. to lose, he sacrifices the crown prince in a burnt

  360. offering right on the wall in front of everybody. Right, so,

  361. no wonder God goes after these people. I don't know

  362. that the average reader, as you plow through the Old Testament,

  363. a lot of times we miss those because that's one sentence, right, right,

  364. That was one sentence. The king of Moab took his

  365. oldest son who would have been the next king, and

  366. sacrificed him as a burno offering on the wall, and

  367. then just keep going one sentence. Right. So, every once

  368. in a while you'll hear somebody go, you know, one

  369. of the big arguments I listened to. I think it

  370. was Christopher Hitchins, one of the main atheist you know, philosophers,

  371. and he goes, you know, I don't like the God

  372. of the Old Testament because he commitsed genocide right in

  373. the Bible whatever. And I'm like, I don't know that.

  374. You and I can comprehend how unbelievably and completely evil

  375. these people were. Yeah, their culture was such that the

  376. people after that, it says, so there was great anger

  377. against Israel. Now look what you made me do. Look

  378. what you made our king do. They were not horrified

  379. at what their king did. They were horrified at what

  380. Israel was doing. Right. So Israel comes in and goes, hey,

  381. you're not paying your taxes anymore. The only reason why

  382. we let you live is because you give us one

  383. hundred thousand sheep and one hundred thousand coats of wool

  384. from the rams, and you stopped paying. We're coming to collect. Right,

  385. that's just a government thing. Those are two governments working

  386. things out. You stop paying, there's consequences. That's that This king,

  387. this evil king, gets up and sacrifices his son in

  388. a burnt offering on the wall, the web, the city,

  389. the would be king. He sacrificed the crown prince. That's

  390. right in front of the people. And the people are

  391. not mad at their king. They're mad at Israel.

  392. Because they probably believe in that sacrifice.

  393. They were totally saturated with evil in every way. Now

  394. here's a king willing to sacrifice his son and the

  395. burn offering in front of everybody. But what we know

  396. about the worship this was Chimash was the god that

  397. he would have been worshiping there, but the gods of

  398. Bail and Molek and all these other gods Ashtereth. The

  399. sex issues, the sexual issues in worship were as evil

  400. as these human sacrifices were evil and the full on hedonism,

  401. although hedonism was more of a Greek thing. But this

  402. self indult legence was so incomprehensibly evil to us that

  403. this is why God goes No, you have to get

  404. rid of them. They're all completely permeated with this idea.

  405. They will never change, their children will never change, their

  406. great grandchildren will never change. Right, That's what God's because

  407. God's not bound by time he's able to look into

  408. time and go, it's never it's only going to get worse.

  409. And God says the planet is better if we stop

  410. it now, then to let it keep getting worse and

  411. worse and worse and worse and worse. And so I

  412. look at this and go, dude, anybody who who could

  413. co sign what this king just did deserves what the

  414. Mobiites get, right. We can't let that go unchecked. And

  415. that's just from a regular citizen. But God in his

  416. holiness looking at this and going, these people are only

  417. evil continually. Everything they think to do is evil.

  418. Yeah, And you know we have to understand as well.

  419. In the Old Testament, even even back in David's time,

  420. when David was given the assignment of going to war

  421. in conquering countries, it.

  422. Was the same thing.

  423. It was the same Joshua, same thing.

  424. Yeah, same thing.

  425. So it's not just in this instance, it is it

  426. is a theme throughout the Old Testament, right, And so yeah,

  427. I think it's a great point.

  428. Yeah. And so these people are mad at Israel, They're

  429. not mad at their king. It just it blows my

  430. mind here on these things. So anyways, the the issue

  431. I think too and we kind of blew past. It

  432. was Elisha's like, why are you coming to me? Right?

  433. And it is interesting to me. You've got these. You've

  434. got the wicked King of Israel, Joram, You've got the

  435. wicked King of who's the other one that they went

  436. to get help.

  437. Joseph about the third king?

  438. Yes, either there's a third third king, the king of

  439. they're both god less, well they have gods, but they're

  440. not following the true God. And Jehosaphat goes, well, we

  441. need some help. Let's go find a prophet. You don't

  442. have any prophets, and like, oh, yeah, there's that Elisha guy.

  443. He's here.

  444. Yeah.

  445. Well, one of the notes just glanced down while you

  446. were talking, and one of the notes says, you know,

  447. why didn't Jehosaphat bring his own profit? Right? And so

  448. it just goes to show you that, you know, there

  449. there there was a decline towards the end of Johosaphat's

  450. reign and so and so you know here he is

  451. looking for one as opposed to bringing one into battle, right,

  452. and yet yeah, yes, of course he's the one that

  453. recognizes Elisha's authority. Elisha announces the only reason why he's

  454. even entertaining this is because of his respect for Josphat.

  455. So obviously he is a still godly king. But the

  456. fact that that Jospat didn't have one ready, right, Like,

  457. he didn't have one. He didn't he didn't say, Hey,

  458. we're not going to go into battle without these fifty prophets,

  459. right right, or this, you know, or these three prophets

  460. or whatever. He has to go look for one, which

  461. is pretty crazy.

  462. Right.

  463. And and by the way, Elisha says, who has a harp?

  464. Yeah?

  465. And so Elisha, oftentimes it was not uncommon for music

  466. to be played behind a prophet, right, And so think

  467. about this dramatic unveiling.

  468. You know, God's gonna bring you water. There's gonna be

  469. no wind or rain, but there's just gonna be water.

  470. In the harp's playing, you know. And there's this dramatic,

  471. you know, unveiling of what God is saying. I would

  472. have liked to have been there for that.

  473. Yeah, that's a regular occurrence where prophets in music are

  474. going together, right in this throughout the Bible, I had

  475. seen a note in there. First Chronicles twenty five to

  476. one is another place where the prophets and music go together.

  477. It happens many many times in the Bible, and this

  478. is one of the reasons why I think it conditions

  479. your heart to hear from God in a way that

  480. you know, when when you and I just do everyday stuff,

  481. there's the logical mental engagement with life and you're just

  482. trying to make a decision whatever. But when when you

  483. bring out the music you're in leaning into it, you

  484. start thinking from the other side of your brain, right,

  485. we know that scientifically, you start working on the on

  486. the other side, and I think you tend to be

  487. more emotionally open as well, and so you're completely open

  488. to God. This is why we we lead in worship

  489. and UH in our services before we declare the word

  490. of God, because that's what prophets do. Prophets come and

  491. bring God's word to God's people, right, That's that's their job,

  492. that's right. And so before we do that, we always

  493. UH spend time in worship, singing, and those two things

  494. accompany each other. Hearing from God. And as a matter

  495. of fact, you know, in what is it is it

  496. Efesians when when God says and don't be drunk with wine,

  497. but instead we're in his excess. But be filled with

  498. the spirit. Right, And then he says a sign of

  499. being filled with the spirit, which remember when when it

  500. said earlier and the spirit of God came upon Elijah Elijha. Right,

  501. be filled with the spirit. Singing to yourselves and psalms

  502. and hymns and spiritual songs. You're singing and making melloy

  503. to the Lord. You're giving thanks and making melley the Lord.

  504. And so those tend to go together. This, this spirit,

  505. the move the spirit of God in you, worship music,

  506. declaration of God's word ath tend to be connected together.

  507. Yeah, that's great, that's great, pretty incredible. Well, hey, that

  508. is our time, so hopefully we will see you tomorrow

  509. on the Bible Gus
