  1. You're listening to The Bible Guys, a podcast where a

  2. couple of friends talk about the Bible in fun in

  3. practical ways. Well, hey, everybody, good morning. My name is

  4. Chris and I'm Katlan, and we today are the Bible

  5. Guys are because Jeff is out of town and so

  6. he's out of the country and so we've done this

  7. thing that I think has been very fun. Throughout the week,

  8. We've had a different guest every single day, and today

  9. we have Katlan uh and and by the way, it's

  10. it's an unusual name. I've never heard of it. So

  11. how do you spell Catlan?

  12. Catlin? The spell C A T L I N D T.

  13. So it's Katlan, that's what That's a joke, yes, yes,

  14. but the T represents the cross. My dad wanted a

  15. gud to follow me all the days of my life,

  16. and so it would have been weird to put in

  17. and n T, so he put a D in between

  18. them and then made them both silent.

  19. Wow. So Catlan and with the DT, which is extremely cool.

  20. Thank you.

  21. So, by the way, it wouldn't have worked if you

  22. weren't like, if you didn't have like cool vibes, if

  23. you were like the nerdy kind like, hey, my name

  24. is Katlin. Maybe work I agree, But you know, you

  25. walk in and you're you're all smooth and you're like Catlin.

  26. They're like, oh, he's so cool. That's a cool name.

  27. Thank you.

  28. Yeah, it wouldn't work on me though. So okay, So

  29. you have been on staff with us at Heritage Church

  30. at our main campus as production directory. So so in

  31. a sentence, what do you what do you do? What

  32. is that title?

  33. I am?

  34. Thanks so much for having me. First of all, you

  35. and Pastor Jeff. For sure, this is really really cool.

  36. I'm usually on the other side of the camera, so

  37. to be on this side, it's pretty cool.

  38. You went for Christmas, right, Christmas we featured you. Yeah, this,

  39. which is really cool. So some people probably really know

  40. you from that.

  41. Yeah, yeah, that's cool. But to your point, I am

  42. the production director, so I'm in charge of all of

  43. the worship experience, so all things audio, all things video,

  44. and all things lights. Now do I do all of

  45. the simultaneously?

  46. No.

  47. We have a phenomenal team yep, to do what it

  48. is that God has graced us to do.

  49. But the buck stops here, which with things go great,

  50. you're the hero right and when things go bad, uh oh,

  51. we look out.

  52. Yes, everything rises and falls on leadership, which I know

  53. you know all about.

  54. Yeah for sure.

  55. Well that's cool. So it's it's a thrill to have

  56. you and we are going to launch right into our

  57. first segment, which, by the way, I've advertised this every day,

  58. so I don't want to forget today. If you're in

  59. the area and you want to drive to Inla City

  60. to see the Bible Guys live, it's gonna be Jeff

  61. and I on April twenty fourth at the La City Campus.

  62. You got to get tickets, but they're free. Just to

  63. reserve your spot. There's only two hundred spots. But go

  64. to Herodichurch dot com slash events and we're doing an

  65. actual Bible Guys episode live on stage and it's gonna

  66. be really cool. We're gonna have some other fun as well,

  67. and there's no agenda. It's just have fun. So it's

  68. just to celebrate, get to meet some people, and you

  69. can waltz in and out. You don't have to worry

  70. about knowing anybody, but just drive there, especially if you're

  71. from the Sterling Heights campus and you want to go

  72. out there. Especially that'd be a great invitation or the

  73. Stony Creek campus. Yeah as well. Right, so here we go.

  74. So here is what I call the crazy question segment

  75. that Desiree has done for all of you. Guys. Catlin

  76. is the production director's and he has the coolest style.

  77. So she's even acknowledging that you're cool.

  78. Very humbled by that.

  79. So here is today's question. What would your kids say

  80. you're cool?

  81. Yeah? Absolutely?

  82. Okay, good, good, all right. So what's the funniest or

  83. most random fashion trend that you secretly wish you could

  84. make a comeback even though you might get weird looks?

  85. What a crazy question?

  86. Yeah, thanks Desiree. I really appreciate you on that one.

  87. Yeah yeah, what would I say crazy comeback versus style?

  88. I'll probably say the whole I'm going to answer it

  89. this way.

  90. Yep. So chivery chivalry. I'm a millennial.

  91. Yeah yeah, and the generation before me I saw many

  92. examples of that chivalry chivalry. So guys walking on the

  93. edge of the sidewalk.

  94. Oh, you're going, but you know what, your brain does

  95. work this way every.

  96. Time we're in creative going somewhere.

  97. Yeah you no, No, I'm complimenting you, because it is

  98. so much deeper than my brain. My brain would be like,

  99. fashion trend means bell bottoms, right, and you're like, no, no, no, chivalry, Yeah,

  100. is a trend. Is a fashion trend?

  101. Yes, because what your attire comes with that persona, with

  102. that perspective.

  103. You're saying, chivalry determines actual attire. Yes, because if you're

  104. going to interrupted you too early.

  105. Yeah, a little bit, but it's okay, it's a conversation.

  106. It's cool.

  107. So so when you probably when you go out with

  108. your wife, she has on a nice dress, you make

  109. sure that your tire is suitable for her.

  110. Sure, Like you just had a birthday, happy but lated birthday.

  111. So when she took you out, you didn't have on

  112. flip flops and some jeans and the regal shirt. You

  113. had a tire that was befitting of not only the

  114. venue that you were at, but complimentary to what she

  115. had on today's day. That's probably a lost art, especially

  116. in my generation and the generations after me, because you

  117. could be out with your lady and she could be dressed,

  118. you know, to the nines or whatever, and the guy

  119. would just have on some flip flops. Right, So I

  120. would bring back to answer your question, I would bring

  121. back just guys looking nice, nice, yeah, versus just getting

  122. up and going out looking like you just walked out

  123. of bed as you walk in with.

  124. A very very swanky looking outfit and I've get a

  125. T shirt off, right, Yeah, so yeah, there you go.

  126. Case endpoints the T shirt Biba guys. So, hey, what

  127. a great answer to the question. Wow, that's really good.

  128. And by the way, my wife surprised me. It was

  129. so great. She actually said, packing over and back. I

  130. didn't know where I was going. We drove from Troy,

  131. Michigan to ann Arbor, so uh so ann Arbor is

  132. a great city. I didn't know what we're gonna do.

  133. We did a massage, like a couple's massage things, so

  134. that was fun.

  135. Do you like massages? I do?

  136. Yeah, I do, yes, very much. And and then you know,

  137. especially since you know you work out and your store

  138. or whatever, it's just it's really it's really great. And

  139. then uh we went back to the tel changed and

  140. she said, now, just nice. Well packed, you know, I

  141. had I knew before I packed, but I had to

  142. wear a jacket. I had no idea where I was

  143. going none. So we dressed up super nice, and she

  144. took me to a live jazz club.

  145. Let's go.

  146. Yeah, yeah, yeah, so it was It was so cool.

  147. In fact, they sent you a video. Was it trumpet

  148. or drums? Sex saxophone? Of course because you play sax But.

  149. It was really cool.

  150. It was cool and the same guy who played the

  151. sacks was a floutist, so he so he did the

  152. live jazz with the flute. And I'm telling you, live

  153. music is my thing. I love it so much. And

  154. I told my wife, who's listening probably right now, I said,

  155. it's one of the most memorable birthdays. Not because it

  156. was like especially like the best live music I've ever heard,

  157. although I loved it, but it was more about because

  158. I love it so much. And it was like when

  159. my family cares about me enough to say, we're going

  160. to do this for you. I mean, holy cow man,

  161. driving us all the way there and doing all this

  162. and doing this just because I love it. I felt

  163. totally love great. It was great.

  164. It was great.

  165. And then and then we went to the most popular

  166. restaurant in arbor. But guess what we found out that

  167. it was actually in our in our arbor. It was

  168. hash week.

  169. Wow.

  170. So it was weed weed week. So as we're walking

  171. through the streets, we're like, why is every smell like marijuana?

  172. Because and it was.

  173. It was a we'd week, and we were like, why

  174. did we come on?

  175. We weed contact high?

  176. And it's so funny, and we were just like we

  177. were coming to our car. It was terrible. All right, well, hey, but.

  178. You made it to live to see another day and

  179. to tell the story.

  180. That's right, that's right. And speaking of getting high, oh wow.

  181. Come on, awkward transition.

  182. You know, we don't need substances in our lives because

  183. we get high on the spirit of God.

  184. Come on, Holy Spirit.

  185. That's it. That's all we need. We don't need nothing else.

  186. That is so good.

  187. It's so awful. Terrible transitions, that's what we're about. Oh man, oh,

  188. I can't believe I even started with that.

  189. Death would appreciate that for sure.

  190. So we're going to jump in the Psalm chapter forty six,

  191. and we're gonna and you are going to read all

  192. eleven verses.

  193. Okay, sweet, So this is a Psalm forty six n

  194. LT right, yes, yes, okay, cool, We'll do one through

  195. eleven correct, Okay, So God is our refuge instruments, always

  196. ready to help in the times of trouble, So we

  197. will not fear when earthquakes come and the mountains crumble

  198. into the sea. Let the oceans roar and foam, Let

  199. the mountains tremble as the waters surge. Verse four says

  200. a river brings joy to the city of our God,

  201. the sacred home of the most High. Verse five, God

  202. dwells in that city. It cannot be destroyed. From the

  203. very break of the day, God were protected. The nations

  204. are in chaos, and their can kingdoms crumble. God's voice

  205. thunders and the earth melts. The Lord of Heaven's Armies

  206. is here among us. The God of Israel is our fortress.

  207. So come see the glorious works of the Lord. See

  208. how he brings destruction upon the world. He causes wars

  209. to end throughout the earth. He breaks the bow and

  210. snaps the spear. He burns the shields with fire. He

  211. steal and know that I am God. I'm probably this

  212. is probably my favorite verse out of the so far.

  213. I will be honored by every nation. I will be

  214. hones throughout the world. The Lord of Heaven's Armies is

  215. here among us. The God of Israel is our fortress.

  216. Wow.

  217. And so let's remind our listeners that psalms were written

  218. to music. And you're a musician. Yes, So there's a

  219. sei lah or an interlude, which means a pause right

  220. between verses seven and eight, and then obviously right after

  221. the end and verse eleven, and actually even after verse three.

  222. So this was saying in sort of three chunks, right,

  223. And so let me read the note from the Life

  224. Application of Study. Bible says this, and Psalm forty six

  225. it says the theme is described this way. God is

  226. always there to help, providing refuge, security and peace. God's

  227. power is complete, and his ultimate victory is certain. He

  228. will not fail to rescue those who love him. And

  229. this is a for a choir director. And it's a

  230. song of the descendants of Korra to be so by

  231. soprano voices. How about that? Like so it actually includes

  232. to be sung by sopranos.

  233. Wow?

  234. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, So I could sort of imagine it.

  235. I just can't get the melody in my brain, right,

  236. But I bet you back then, you know, I mean,

  237. think about how complicated the Bible describes music, even back then.

  238. In some ways it sounds even more intricate than it

  239. does today. You know, we've sort of lost the beauty

  240. of it with the technology, right and and and nowadays

  241. you can just ask Ai to make you a song

  242. and literally within five seconds they'll put up bangers, I

  243. mean like number one hits, which is crazy. And even

  244. before that, you know, just just you know, just making

  245. your own tracks electronically. But back then, the intricacies of

  246. the voices, the choirs, and it says choir directors, you

  247. can imagine just how beautiful these lyrics must have been. Yeah,

  248. you know what is cool if you have a song

  249. or excuse me, a life appicasion of study Bible, which

  250. is different than what you said. Nlt LT is the

  251. translation that's the new living translation. That's how the that's

  252. the verbidge of being translated from Greek and Hebrew and

  253. Arabic to English, but different words. But the life aupication

  254. of study Bible is how they package that translation, and

  255. they package it with a study so in that it

  256. says there's different songs that have inspired famous hymns, and

  257. it looks like Psalm forty six that you just read

  258. is the one that inspired a mighty fortress. Is our

  259. God which I grew up saying, yeah, right, I don't

  260. even remember. I don't even remember. I really don't. I

  261. bet you've I heard it. I could sing the whole thing,

  262. but it's been so long. But it's one that I

  263. knew I have sung. I think honestly, I think I

  264. sang it in Bible college. But I don't think our

  265. church sang it, like the church I worked at for

  266. seven years, this Baptist church, but we had hymndos in

  267. this church, and I don't think this was one that

  268. we sang. But I know I've sang it, and I

  269. think it was in college. But there's several on here

  270. by the way that that that I do know. But

  271. Psalm twenty three, forty six, sixty one, eighty seven, ninety

  272. one six all are famous.

  273. Yeah.

  274. What I love about this passage, thought ball, is that

  275. Soalms forty six is a poetic reminder. That's how I'm

  276. interpreted and I learned years ago. So in business, there's

  277. this thing called business strategy, right yep. But in Psalms

  278. forty six, I would like to think that this is

  279. a divine strategy that gives us a sort of a

  280. road map in navigating chaos. What do you do when

  281. storms roar, when your back is up against the wall,

  282. what do you do when there's all this sort of

  283. external noise?

  284. Right? And God is literally in verse one telling us

  285. I am your refuge and I am your stress. Right.

  286. Yeah. He takes the most fearful things at that time

  287. for humanity, earthquakes, oceans that you know obviously take out

  288. you know anything, oceans. The strength of the ocean is

  289. to be respected. And he says, hey, let the oceans roar.

  290. I mean, think about that. Think about their sailing capabilities

  291. and how primitive they were. And he says, he says,

  292. no matter what comes at you, God is our refuge

  293. and strength, ready to help us in times of trouble.

  294. And that's an amazing thought that.

  295. He's not distant or late. He's very much so present.

  296. Which is great. Yeah, river brings joy to to the

  297. city of our God. I love that word picture as well.

  298. You said poetic, right, And so as this psalm proclaims

  299. the greatness of God verse number ten, it says, this,

  300. be still and know that I'm God, which is the

  301. one you said stuck out to you, right. This is

  302. what the note says. It says war and destruction are inevitable,

  303. but so is God's final victory. And at that time

  304. we will all stand quietly before the all powerful Lord.

  305. How proper then for us to be still now, reverently

  306. honoring him and his power, Majesty, take time to be

  307. still and to honor God. Now are you a person

  308. who you do like a lot of prayer meditation for

  309. a lot of us, add people like myself, it's hard

  310. to do that. There are people that I know their

  311. gift is prayer and they say, oh, you know, the

  312. other day I prayed about ninety minutes into it and

  313. I go and I say to myself, what ninety minutes in? Zoinks?

  314. I'm thinking to myself, like, I am just the worst

  315. Christian ever, right, And to be honest, it's a lot

  316. less you know. So would I do just like any

  317. classic ady d person is, I will do like, hey,

  318. it's better to do quick snippets one hundred times a day, right,

  319. so constantly keep it going, right, So that's what I do.

  320. So I feel like I constantly pray through I got,

  321. you know, throughout the day. And by the way, I

  322. read that with Billy Graham's book, Billy Graham went to

  323. bed in his book just as I am. I think

  324. he said that he was with this other guy and

  325. this other guy was falling around and like, wow, I'm

  326. with the great Billy Graham, and so you know, he's like,

  327. this is one of the most godly men that in

  328. the world. And he says, I was so excited because

  329. he said when we got to the hotel, we're going

  330. to be in the same hotel room. And he goes,

  331. and I was so excited to hear like how Billy

  332. Graham says prayer at night. And he goes, he goes,

  333. this is like, this is like the greatest moment ever.

  334. And he says, we got into the room, we all

  335. got ready, and he says, we got into bed, and

  336. I'm just following his lead. He didn't say anything about prayers.

  337. And he goes, so I just sort of like, you know,

  338. I got into my queen size bed over here. He

  339. got into his queen size bed over there, he says,

  340. and you know, you know, shut off the light and

  341. he says, and Billy Graham said out loud, good night Lord.

  342. And that was it. And then he goes.

  343. The next day, he goes, he asked him and he says,

  344. I got to be honest, because I was expecting like

  345. this big time of prayer and he says that Billy

  346. Graham said, well, for me, there isn't a time when

  347. I'm not praying throughout the day. And he said, I'm

  348. constantly praying. And I heard that when I read the book,

  349. and I thought, I thought, that's me, and that's that's

  350. that's that's what I want to do obviously, right, and

  351. so I want to be that person. But it also

  352. made me feel better about not having like this big Okay,

  353. somebody's praying with Pastor Chris, let's make this bedtime prayer

  354. something to remember, right, right, because that's not me. And

  355. so but anyway, my original question was about you, So

  356. how do you lean?

  357. I lean your way for sure.

  358. A lot of times I am learning in this season

  359. in my life to be what's called an indecessor, if

  360. you will. And so I am getting longer with my prayers.

  361. But those are intentional time for me to pray, and

  362. then that's when I would be you know, longer in that.

  363. But the Bible is very clear when he says, like

  364. meditate on the word day to night, and so to me,

  365. those conversations are intimate moments and times and intentional times

  366. with prayer, like and all thy ways acknowledge me. And

  367. so that's when I'm at work, when I'm dealing with

  368. my family and somebody cuts me off in the middle

  369. of the road, like whatever that is, these are intentional

  370. times for me to literally pray. And so I do

  371. the same thing that you do, because otherwise I'll be honest,

  372. I'll forget, right, I will definitely forget.

  373. It's really easy, and you know this, been thirty years

  374. in ministry.

  375. Is really easy to be to do the work of

  376. God without him, right, right, And so I've learned to.

  377. Yeah, as strange as that sounds, you could be around

  378. the things of God without the presence of God or

  379. connected to the power of the Holy Spirit, because if

  380. your business is church things, then God is all around you.

  381. And if not careful, you can view that as a

  382. substitution for real intimacy with God.

  383. Right, you can make that your idol.

  384. Right, yeah, yeah, yeah, the work of God, right, correct,

  385. which is which is the Bible talks about that the Pharisees.

  386. The Pharisees righteousness was the stumbling block, right right, which

  387. is crazy to think about, but Jesus talks about that,

  388. and that is true. You know, you can make holiness

  389. and real following and routine and rituals and church, you know,

  390. actions and commandments. You could make that your thing without

  391. actually loving the Father, right, right, you know, spending time

  392. with Jesus. So you know, So what did Jesus say?

  393. You know, your loving God is your active worship. It

  394. is what is expected of you, right, just to love God.

  395. And God says in the Old Testament. You know, obedience

  396. is better than sacrifice. God doesn't want sacrifice, David says,

  397. but a broken heart broken in contract heart. He wants

  398. the relational piece of us. So yeah, that's that's all

  399. good stuff. Hey, real quick, I got to tell you

  400. this quick story. Are you familiar with doctor Charles Stanley. Yes, okay,

  401. So I lived in Atlanta for ten years and I

  402. always and growing up I always listen even in Ohio.

  403. I grew up listening to Charles Stanley. My wife loves

  404. Charles Stanley, still does, and so I listened to him

  405. all the time. Listen to me, folks, you know he's

  406. that guy. Well, anyway, he did a message a long

  407. long time ago called Meditation for Transformation and I still remember.

  408. It was like ten things to do, you know, set aside,

  409. quiet time, be still, you know, all these different things.

  410. And I've taught that many, many many at times, and

  411. I still have the notes for it. But I've always

  412. known him as that guy, and he talks about prayer closets.

  413. I've read his books and he talks about just being

  414. a man of prayer and all these kinds of things. Well,

  415. somewhere around nineteen ninety eight or so, I was in

  416. my small little Baptist church in my Baptist world at

  417. the time, and he was a part of First Baptist

  418. Church in downtown Atlanta, but they had just moved to

  419. the Avon Center on the north side of the city,

  420. and they were quite big, you know. I don't know

  421. what it was, twenty thirty thousand people, whatever it is

  422. at the time. But I knew somebody on staff who said,

  423. would you like to interview for a job here at

  424. First Baptist Church, And I was like, yeah, So I

  425. drove up there, and I won't tell you about all

  426. that stuff, but because there's a lot of observations about that,

  427. it was very interesting. But what I will say is

  428. this in Charles Stanley's office. He had built at this

  429. new facility a prayer closet. Wow, And so it was

  430. in his office and so he was just that guy.

  431. And so they said, oh, this is the doc's office.

  432. They called him the doc, and they said, and this

  433. is his prayer closet, and they just wanted to move on.

  434. I said, I'm sorry, excuse me. I said, is there

  435. any way I could open up and look at his

  436. prayer closet? And he goes, well, I'm not sure anybody's

  437. ever asked that before. And I said, how could anybody

  438. not ask that? I said, could I please? And it

  439. was pretty basic, but it was this wonderful, beautiful thing

  440. with pillows on the ground, blankets everywhere. Pretty basic. There

  441. was nothing on the walls in terms of literature, but

  442. there were photos and paintings like Psalm twenty three and

  443. Shepherds and things like this, just images. And there were

  444. blankets and pillows, but there were Bible verses everywhere everywhere.

  445. That's amazing everywhere, and and and and and and what

  446. I noticed was there wasn't a chair. There's only pillows

  447. in a blanket, which means this eighty year old man

  448. at the time I think was on his knees.

  449. Uh.

  450. And I've read his books, so I know that he's

  451. you know, he'll spend hours in there. And I got

  452. to tell you, man, there's something about that and so

  453. that so when I read be Still and Know that

  454. I'm God, that's where my mind goes. My mind goes

  455. like I need to force myself into a prayer closet moment,

  456. whether it's an actual closet or not. And I need

  457. to recognize the weight of this verse. Right, And in

  458. the midst of everything, they're talking about victory and war

  459. and thunder God's voice thunders, the Lord's armies are among us,

  460. you know, all of these great word pictures, and then

  461. he says, be still and know that I'm God.

  462. Yeah, Yeah, I don't think it's it's about literally being quiet.

  463. Is I literally think it's like letting go of.

  464. Control and reminding your problems of your God, versus reminding

  465. God of your problems like he doesn't already know. Right,

  466. So I think I think it's like Pauls before he's saying,

  467. be still and know that I'm God, Like Paus before

  468. you panic cat, Pauls to reflect, think of think, think

  469. of who I am my divine being. Think, Think that

  470. I know I had a purpose and plan for you

  471. before you were even born, before your mom and your

  472. dad even knew of each other. I I knew and

  473. had a purpose of planning for you. So think about

  474. that before you go off the deep end when you're

  475. faced with whatever you're face in. So like and and

  476. also trade control for confidence. Like when my children when

  477. it's when it when they want something to eat, they

  478. never asked me, uh, are we to eat today?

  479. They never asked me that are we going to eat today? Why?

  480. Because I feed them every day? Right, their only question

  481. is what are we going to eat? They never come

  482. to me and say or their mother and say, oh,

  483. are we going to eat today? I just want to

  484. make sure.

  485. Because you know inside note thank God, right right?

  486. Crazy God? Absolutely.

  487. So it's like them saying, I'm training my control for confidence.

  488. I'm confident in my natural father that he's going to

  489. provide food. So I feel like God is saying, hey,

  490. as your heavenly father, be still and just know that

  491. I am God. Like, remember the last time you got

  492. into a pickle? Did I not get you out of that?

  493. That's good, that's good, but hey, that is that is

  494. our time, and I think that's a great place to end.

  495. So thank you for Catlin, for being here, Callen, and

  496. and by the way, I love that your dad added

  497. the tea for the cross. It's so cool in servey

  498. time you write it or see it in print, you're

  499. reminded of that sentiment of your dad, which is so cool.

  500. But anyway, thank you for being here, and hopefully we

  501. will see you next week. Jeff will be joining us

  502. again and again maybe live on the twenty fourth at

  503. MLA City for the Bible guys, But we'll see you then.
