  1. You're listening to the Bible Guys, a podcast where a

  2. couple of friends talk about the Bible in fun, in

  3. practical ways. Hey, everybody, welcome and thank you for tuning

  4. in to the Bible Guys today.

  5. I like how you said that with a snap of

  6. your fingers. Yeah, you know it's it's the second cool guy.

  7. What do you call this?

  8. Is it?

  9. Finger guns?

  10. Finger guns? Yeah?

  11. Hey, welcome to the Bible Guys. Yeah, finger guys.

  12. Super cool guy, Yeah, super cool because you pull it off.

  13. I pull it off.

  14. Let me ask you a question. Do you think people

  15. have to be cool to pull off finger guns?

  16. Yeah? Yeah, yeah, because I can't. I can't pull it off,

  17. but you always look cool when you do it.

  18. Keep doing it, I keep doing it, Chris Man, I'm

  19. not sure anybody can pull off fingers, but.

  20. Anyway, Hey, so you know in our listeners are longtime listeners,

  21. know how committed we are to excellence and broadcasting always right, always,

  22. And not only that.

  23. Our most reliable sources of news are like CNN.

  24. Yes I'm kidding. Uh So we love to bring meaningful news, yes,

  25. and useful news and reliable news to our listeners when

  26. we come across something that we feel like is important.

  27. This is and so sometimes we've read news about marriage stuff,

  28. we've read news about family stuff, we've read news about

  29. faith stuff. But this one's kind of a special interest thing.

  30. It's kind of a book review, right, and we haven't

  31. done one of these yet. So here from the very

  32. most trustworthy of sources, the Babylon B, which, if you

  33. don't know, the Babylon B is a satire website. We

  34. love it. Babylon B has this headline. Man, people are

  35. going to love reading this one, says Moses while writing Leviticus.

  36. The humor on this I love.

  37. So here here mount Sinai. Hot off the success of

  38. Genesis and Exodus, Moses express compace that everyone would love

  39. his follow up work, Leviticus. The leader of the Israelite

  40. seemed sure that the warm reception of his first two

  41. books that he had received made it a safe bet

  42. that the next installment of the series would be a

  43. smash hit. This is so fun, oh man, people are

  44. gonna love reading this one, Moses said, as he wrote

  45. a passage about how the priest was going about diagnosing mold.

  46. It's my first foray into a more technical, perceived dural genre.

  47. There hasn't been anything like it. Moses did admit that

  48. he'd been writing under the guidance of the Lord and

  49. therefore couldn't take all the credit for Leviticus. He uses

  50. my natural talent in writing, but the story ideas are

  51. all his, Moses explained. But that doesn't make Leviticus any

  52. less riveting. An advanced excerpt of the book failed the

  53. spark excitement for its upcoming release. Dathan A Benjamite said

  54. it's just a bunch of regulations, so basically a rule book.

  55. Maybe the Levites don't really like it. However, a local

  56. Levite named Seth was not impressed. This ain't it, chief,

  57. He said, it's like reading an instruction manual. Moses brother Aaron,

  58. who spoke before Pharaoh, was reportedly less than enthused by

  59. the new work. The part where me and my sons

  60. are ordained is cool, Aaron said of the book, but

  61. the part where they die after offering strange fire was

  62. much less to my liking. Moses has shrugged off early

  63. criticism of the book. Maybe releasing a preview was a

  64. bad idea. You really have to see it how it

  65. all comes together, and then bam, Leviticus. You know, it's

  66. going to be huge a publishing time. Whileviticus turned out

  67. to be a disappointment among the Israelites, Moses said he

  68. was not deterred from his next great idea to write

  69. a book detailing the numerical populations of Israelite Trible.

  70. My goodness, is brilliant. Who Ever wrote this is brilliant.

  71. I'm literally copying and pasting this right now and saying

  72. this to Dave Wilson.

  73. It's fantastic.

  74. It's hilarious.

  75. Whoa man. So if you don't know, if you're new

  76. to the Bible, stuff, where the Bible, guys, We're here

  77. to help.

  78. We are.

  79. And so the first books, at the first five books

  80. of the Bible are called the Books of Moses, Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers,

  81. and Deuteronomy. Genesis tells about the creation of the world.

  82. It talks about the flood, talks about Adam and Eve

  83. and Noah and Abraham and Isaac and Jacob and Joshua,

  84. the beginning of the nation of Israel, the promises of God.

  85. Why the world is the way it is. I mean,

  86. it's a brilliant book. It's fantastic. And then Exodus is

  87. it talks. Genesis ends with Joseph being in Egypt and

  88. rescuing his people. But then between Genesis and Exodus, the

  89. people become enslaved by is by Egypt, and then God

  90. sends Moses to rescue them, right, and so then he

  91. leads them out. He gives them the Ten Commandments. You know,

  92. they make movies out of these two books, right, and

  93. then Leviticus comes in. It's all the rules for what

  94. they can eat but they can eat, how they build

  95. their tabernacle, how they manage civil government, and all these

  96. things right now, and then numbers after that. The fourth

  97. book is really about how God had Moses divide up

  98. the nation and begin to build kind of tribal identities.

  99. They already had them, but began to kind of acknowledge

  100. them and build this cohesive nation. That's really what it was.

  101. There's a lot of counting, a lot of numbers. It's

  102. kind of a dry book. And then Deuteronomy is a

  103. rehash of those two books. Right, So his first two

  104. books are killer and then the last three books are kind.

  105. Of which is why why it's so brilliant.

  106. It's hysterical.

  107. Yeah, yeah, So you know, if you start the Bible

  108. start reading the Bible. If you never read the Bible

  109. consistently and you want to pick it up, we actually

  110. don't recommend that you start from the beginning goes straight

  111. through in terms of developing habits and things like that,

  112. like eventually, yes, of course reading through it is important.

  113. Yeah, I do recommend Genesis, but I just tell people, hey,

  114. don't don't feel obligated to just keep going to the end,

  115. because it's not written that way.

  116. Right. Well, that's what I was trying to say, if

  117. I didn't say it clearly, is that people say, oh,

  118. I'm just going to read it from the beginning like

  119. a book, all the way to the end, right, So

  120. and so they go Genesis, Exodus, and then they just

  121. can't make it through, and people just say they're just

  122. like I just I just I couldn't make it, And

  123. then that will discourage you so much to where you'll

  124. stop reading because they're so long too.

  125. So the discovery is, you know, when you pick up

  126. a novel my dad just passed away, my mom brought

  127. my dad loved Louis Lamore. You ever read the old

  128. Cowboy books? I never did, No, I've read them all.

  129. But so my mom brought my dad's entire He has

  130. every single Louis Lamore book and he brought she brought

  131. them all. Well, a Louis Lamore book novel, you know,

  132. it's gonna be some cowboy book and it's one hundred

  133. and fifty pages, two hundred pages or whatever. You start

  134. at beginning, they begin to create there's some kind of

  135. problem that happens, and then it's resolved by the end.

  136. And so that's how you read a novel. And people

  137. make the mistake of thinking that's you read the Bible,

  138. and what they miss out on is that the Bible

  139. is actually a collection of sixty six books right right,

  140. and each of the books has its own purpose. But

  141. if you're trying to figure out how do I get

  142. to know God, that's not in book one in Genesis,

  143. you need to get back in deeper into the book.

  144. And so so you know, that's the confusing part about

  145. sometimes about the Bible. And so what do you recommend?

  146. Where do you recommend people start off?

  147. The Book of John John, so in the New Testament,

  148. the Gospels of the first four books of the Bible, Matthew, Mark, Luke,

  149. and John, all of them record the events in the

  150. life of Jesus. Right, So a lot of times that

  151. can get repetitive too, because.

  152. You'll be like, hey, didn't I just read this, And it's.

  153. Because the different authors recorded some of the same events

  154. from Jesus' life.

  155. So so I'd say start with the Book.

  156. Of John and then and then move forward, and then

  157. move into the Book of Acts and then the writings

  158. of Paul and then that's that's the best way. And

  159. I think by the time you get to the end

  160. of the New Testament you will have developed a really

  161. strong habit of reading straight through. Yeah, so that's that's

  162. where I recommend it.

  163. Yeah, that's great. And if you're looking for the Book

  164. of John, it's two thirds of the way through the Bible,

  165. so you get to two thirds of the way back

  166. that's where John is. Or you can just use the

  167. the table contents in the front of your Bible and

  168. find it, sure John and find it. Yeah, it's great.

  169. Any of those are really good ones. So speaking of

  170. good books, Isaiah is in is a good book in

  171. the Bible. We like it, and that.

  172. Happens to be where we are.

  173. But you were going to say something like profound and

  174. you're like, speaking of your books Isaiah's good.

  175. Yeah, that's it. So we're always we're always trying to

  176. figure out the worst possible transition, yes, out of the

  177. goofy thing into the second half. But Isaiah we've been

  178. reading from, and he is a prophet and he also

  179. works with King Hezekiah. So yesterday we read the first

  180. half of Isaiah chapter thirty seven where Hezekiah runs to

  181. God while the king of Assyria is threatening to wipe

  182. them out and mocking Hezekiah's God. Right, so that's kind

  183. of what happens. Well, let's pick up in the second

  184. half of Isaiah chapter thirty seven. We'll start off with

  185. the verse twenty one. We'll just read it, I think

  186. the end of the chapter. It says, then Isaiah, son

  187. of Amas sent this message to Hezekiah. This is what

  188. the Lord, the God of Israel, says. Because you prayed

  189. about King Sanakrab of Assyria, the Lord has spoken this

  190. word against him. The Virgin daughter of Zion despises you

  191. and laughs at you. The Daughter of Jerusalem shakes her

  192. head in derision as you flee. Whom have you been

  193. defying and ridiculing against Whom did you raise your voice?

  194. Whom did you look with such haughty eyes. It was

  195. the Holy One of Israel. By your messengers, you have

  196. defied the Lord, you have said. With my many chariots,

  197. I have conquered the highest mountains, yes, their modest peaks

  198. of Lebanon. I've cut down its tallest cedars and its

  199. finest cypress trees. I've reached its farthest heights and explored

  200. its deepest forests. I've dug wells in many foreign lands

  201. and refresh myself with their water. With the sole on

  202. my feet, I have stopped up the rivers of Egypt.

  203. Have you not heard? I decided this long ago. Long ago,

  204. I planned it, and now I'm making it happen. I

  205. planned for you to crush fortified cities into heaps of rubble.

  206. That is why the people have so little power and

  207. are so frightened and confused. They are as weak as grass,

  208. as easily trampled as tender green shoots. They're like grass

  209. sprouting on a housetop, scorched before it can grow lush

  210. and tall. But I know you well, where you stay

  211. and when you come and go. I know the way

  212. you have raged against me. And because of your raging

  213. against me and your arro against which I have heard

  214. for myself, I will put my hook in your nose

  215. and my bit in your mouth. I will make you

  216. return by the same road on which you came. Then

  217. Isaiah said to Hezekiah, here is the proof that what

  218. I say is true. And then God tells has Akiah,

  219. this year you will eat only what grows up by itself,

  220. And next year you will eat it springs up from that.

  221. But in the third year you will plant crops and

  222. harvest them. You will ten vineyards and eat their fruit.

  223. And you who are left in Judah, who have escaped

  224. the ravages of the siege, will put roots down in

  225. your own soil and grow up and flourish. For a

  226. remnant of my people will spread out from Jerusalem, a

  227. group of survivors from Mount Zion. The passionate commitment of

  228. the Lord of Heaven's armies will make it happen. And

  229. this is what the Lord says about the King of Assyria.

  230. His armies will not enter Jerusalem. They will not even

  231. shoot an arrow at it. They will not march outside

  232. its gates with their shields, nor build banks of earth

  233. against its walls. The king will return to his own

  234. country by the same road on which he came. He

  235. will not enter this city, says the Lord. For my

  236. own honor and for the sake of my servant David,

  237. I will defend this city and protect it. That night,

  238. the angel of the Lord went out to the Assyrian

  239. camp and killed one hundred and eighty five thousand Assyrian soldiers.

  240. When the surviving Assyrians woke up the next morning, they

  241. found corpses everywhere. The then king Senakreb of Assyria broke

  242. camp and returned to his own land. He went home

  243. to his capital of Ninevah and stayed there. One day,

  244. while he was worshiping the temple of his god this Rock,

  245. his sons, a drama Lek and Schererzer killed him with

  246. their swords. Then they escaped to the land of Errat,

  247. and another son, Esar had On became the next king

  248. of Assyria. Wow.

  249. Yeah, I mean, well there you go. So he went

  250. home and then got killed by his two.

  251. Sons worshiping in the temple of his false god. Wow wow,

  252. isn't it crazy?

  253. Yeah?

  254. And so God sounds a little ticked off it at

  255. at the pridefulness of Senacrib.

  256. Right. Well, you know somebody who you know, it's it's

  257. it's exactly like so I just made reference yesterday in

  258. the podcast that that it sounded like David right, oh

  259. when he says, who is this philistine? That'll if I

  260. the the the living God, and that's that's sort of

  261. that's sort of how I felt when I watched have

  262. you seen these series?

  263. David?

  264. So it's on you know, streaming right now, and uh,

  265. they're they're walking through David. It's it's pretty darn good.

  266. It really is in terms of like the actual you know, dramatization,

  267. the the the especial effects.

  268. I mean, it's it's top notch.

  269. There's only two things about it that I already mentioned

  270. them before that I didn't like that weren't quite accurate.

  271. Uh they were very minor things, but still things are things,

  272. right Johnny Tiller right, So so I uh so I

  273. didn't like that, but everything else about it was just

  274. pretty phenomenal. But anyway, all that's say, uh, the feeling

  275. that you get when you experience this recreation of somebody

  276. standing up there and saying, I defy this God of yours,

  277. and all of a sudden, the nation of Israel cowards

  278. because he's such a giant and and and this guy

  279. is being allowed to be a bully.

  280. He's being allowed and.

  281. You just feel like somebody rise up and shut this

  282. guy up. You know, who's just mocked God. He just

  283. openly mocks God. And I'm telling you that the emotion

  284. of that is just so strong, and I could even

  285. imagine how, you know, times a million, how God must

  286. have felt, you know, with with his arrogance as he

  287. openly says, you're God, this fairy tale guy of yours.

  288. Is not going to destroy you from my hand.

  289. And so yeah, I would imagine that's probably the reason

  290. why the angel came and single handedly took out one

  291. hundred and eighty five thousand Syrians.

  292. Yeah, well, you know, God hates pride. Yeah, pride is

  293. one of the things that you read in the Book

  294. of Proverbs. Solomon lays out these seven things that God hates,

  295. and one of those is that prideful. Look right, God

  296. just despises it when people think the spirit and when

  297. people think they're all that right. So this king Sanakreb

  298. is like, he says, listen, who are you ridiculing? Man?

  299. You think you're the one that came rolling into Lebanon

  300. and took those trees? You think you're the one that did.

  301. God said, I was planning this a long time ago.

  302. I was planning to bring judgment on Lebanon. I was

  303. planning to bring judgment on all these countries that you've

  304. already defeated, and you were just a tool, dude, and

  305. you're still just a tool. That's right. That's that's what

  306. God's saying to him. I always plan to do this.

  307. But now I know you well, I know where you stay,

  308. I know when you come and go. I know the

  309. way that you've raged against me. And so instead of

  310. acknowledging me, you think you did all this yourself. And

  311. God says, listen, I know where you live, and you're

  312. going to pay. And that's exactly right, isn't that what

  313. he says? I know you well, where you stay, when

  314. you come and go, I know what you've said about me,

  315. right right, he says, I'll put my hook in your

  316. nose and my bit in your mouth.

  317. Yeah that's incre Oh that's a word.

  318. Yeah. So we had a I worked for a while

  319. for one of the wealthiest men in Michigan, and after

  320. he made his massive fortune, he bought uh two ranches

  321. in Metamora and they were side by side. So he

  322. owned about at the time about five hundred acres and

  323. one side was just for his estate. It was beautiful.

  324. I worked in the landscaping side of his estate. The

  325. other was a cattle ranch. And he was a hobby

  326. a hobbyist cattle breeder, and it was just it was

  327. so different from the career that he built his wealth on.

  328. So he began breeding world champion blank black angus beef.

  329. So he owned a couple of the top breeder bulls

  330. in the world. One named black Jack at the time

  331. that was worth million upon millions of dollars. The other

  332. was Regal. Regal was worth millions of dollars. Regal lived

  333. on our ranch. Blackjack lived in Kentucky, but Rego lived

  334. on our ranch. And so we go horse around with

  335. him sometimes. So you got this eighteen hundred pound nineteen

  336. hundred pounds, just giant chunk of muscle. Yeah, right, huge. Now,

  337. black angus bulls don't have big horns. They got these

  338. big flat heads and they'll just smash you. They'll smash

  339. you against the fence. So on more than one occasion,

  340. that was in my twenties. So we were dumb and

  341. we would horse around with regal. Sometimes we'd get him

  342. in a pen, but you could grab the hook in

  343. his nose, the ring in his nose, and we could

  344. move him wherever we wanted to. Wow, there was eighteen

  345. hundred pounds of muscle right could kill us without even thinking.

  346. But you grab that hook, give a little tug. He

  347. immediately because it was put in his nose when he

  348. was young, when he was little, right when he couldn't

  349. fight back, and it would immediately pull him back into

  350. this moment where okay, one, it was uncomfortable too, It's

  351. just what he had to do. He had to follow you,

  352. and it was amazing. Now I rarely ever got out

  353. in front of him purpose, but we grab that hook,

  354. we can move h where we wanted moving. And this

  355. is what God is saying is I'm gonna humble you.

  356. You are so willful, you are so prideful. You think

  357. you're doing all these things. I'm gonna put a hook

  358. in your nose. I'm gonna put a bit in your

  359. mouth like a horse again, same things, pound horse.

  360. Yeah.

  361. Not only am I going to make you do what

  362. I want you to do, but I'm gonna do it

  363. with these Yes, you're going to become. You're going to

  364. become this great power that could be controlled by something

  365. as small.

  366. As a bit yeah or a hook. Yeah, which is amazing.

  367. I'm going to put a bradle on you. And the

  368. way he did it was he sent one angel. You

  369. want to do you ever think about how powerful angel a?

  370. Remember the pastors we just read yesterday or a couple

  371. days ago, it said that God surrounds you with his angels. Yes,

  372. you want to know how much protection you have? One

  373. angel kills one hundred and eighty five thousand Assyrian soldiers.

  374. Yeah, so this would make a good episode of something, right,

  375. so you know, if you if you if you thought

  376. that the battle.

  377. Or a good story in a book, yes, yes, like

  378. God thought of that already. Yeah, hey, let's write this down.

  379. I'm thinking of the battle scene in the Colisseum and

  380. Gladiator we're on the field Patriot Day or Brave Heart

  381. or saving Private Ryan from that matter, right where it's

  382. like there's a raging battle scene that takes place where

  383. you can measure what's happening. Well, you know, we've also

  384. seen movies that are ridiculous where one where you know,

  385. entire armies fall victim to you know, one superpower like

  386. one soldier. Right, So it's the Captain America or the

  387. Seven Rings.

  388. I mean, it's just you know, you name it, right,

  389. it's there. And so this one angel takes out one hundred.

  390. And five Come on, I mean visually, how could you

  391. not see that in your brain?

  392. Yeah? It's amazing, Yeah, it is amazing. Ye. And then

  393. he left just enough so not everybody died. One hundred

  394. and eighty five thousand died, right, right, So he leaves enough.

  395. They wake up the next morning and there's corpses everywhere.

  396. Can you imagine how horrifying that would be? And then

  397. he lets Sanakra live the king right right, And so

  398. there's that hook in my nose, there's that bradle of

  399. my mom. Go home, and he does the Bible says, literally,

  400. he goes home with the tail between his legs. He

  401. breaks camp, returns his own land. He went home to

  402. his capital in Nineva and stayed there, right right? What

  403. was his He was thumping his chest, saying, I conquered everybody,

  404. and everybody's afraid of me, right, and.

  405. I'll go where I want. I'll conquer what I want.

  406. In fact, I've got plans to go three other places.

  407. After you and then go home and stay at Nineva yep.

  408. And then he gets he gets wiped out, right, he

  409. gets murdered by his own sons. And I had a

  410. hard time saying those names. Hey, I want to show

  411. you this. Look at this. So we had somebody regular listeners,

  412. a husband and wife. Yes, and they sent you and

  413. me a letter, and they sent us this little book

  414. and it says I just talked to her on Sunday.

  415. A guide to pronouncing Biblical names. Yes, right, and uh

  416. so I looked it up.

  417. You could use it today.

  418. Well, I tried on this one. So it did not

  419. have the Sr. Hadden in there for some reason, but

  420. it did have that a drama lik one a drama

  421. lik a drammel yeah, so as the e h yeah,

  422. it's a drama.

  423. When I was an Israel they taught me how to

  424. count to ten in Arabic. And I don't remember any

  425. of it now because it was in two thousand and nine,

  426. but I remember the number five is come say and

  427. it's and it's and and so I remember like practicing

  428. it enough to where they were.

  429. Like, wow, that's as good as as us.

  430. Yeah.

  431. Well, and I was like, oh cool, I can say

  432. the number five.

  433. Well you can get five or something somewhere five part

  434. to something, say, oh, he wants five of those. Yeah.

  435. So God does bring judgment right. And so here's a

  436. lesson for us to remember. Again. One king operated from

  437. his prideful place, thinking he was in control, and he

  438. missed out in the fact that this was always God's plan,

  439. that God, God was the one to doing it. The

  440. other king ran to God and said, God, I don't

  441. know where to turn. Would you bend down to me,

  442. would you hear me? Would you reach out and help me.

  443. So one king in humility gets God's favor. The other

  444. king in his pride winds up getting wiped out.

  445. That's good, that's really good.

  446. That's what happens. And God does it. It's funny. He's

  447. got one hundred and eighty five. That seems like a

  448. big army to me. If one hundred and eighty five

  449. thousand soldiers are killed and the rest of the army

  450. packs up and goes back, there were hundreds of thousands, sure, right,

  451. seems like a big army. Yeah, And God goes, yeah,

  452. you know how I told you nothing to me. I'm

  453. just gonna send one of my because it says he's

  454. the God of Heaven's armies, armies. Right, so how many

  455. people are in one of God's armies. I don't know

  456. how many angels are one of God God's armies, but

  457. he has armies, the armies of heaven. And then he

  458. just goes, I'm just gonna send one of my soldiers

  459. to wipe out I don't know in eighty five thousand years. Right.

  460. It just lets you know we serve a big God,

  461. a great God. He's powerful, and God will have his way.

  462. So either we can be Snakreb and puff ourselves up

  463. and think we did it, or we can be Hezekiah

  464. and go to our knees and say, God, we need

  465. your help and we trust in you alone, and you

  466. see how it works out.

  467. Yeah.

  468. And then also another maybe perhaps sermon that's in this

  469. chapter is don't think that just because you have success that.

  470. It was by your hand.

  471. It was God who gave you the ability, God who

  472. gave you everything. And so here you know, Sinakram thinks

  473. that he's accomplished things by his hand, and God's like, no,

  474. I'm I'm having.

  475. My will and my way through your life. You are

  476. a vessel. You are a tool.

  477. And I'm going to do what I want to do

  478. through your life.

  479. Well, you know, the broad strokes.

  480. Of our lives are no different than that, right, right,

  481. So God's going to have his will, and you know,

  482. your whole life is is you know, sure you have talent,

  483. you have ability, but behind it all is God, Yes,

  484. every bit of it.

  485. Yep.

  486. So well that is a great place to end. And

  487. so hopefully we'll pick up tomorrow and we'll see that

  488. on the Bible. Guys,
