  11. all kinds of good stuff, wouldn't it be fun? Well?

  12. You know what, turns out he did say all kinds

  13. of good stuff. He did, and it still works today.

  14. And so we're doing famous quotes of Jesus, not all

  15. of them, but maybe fifty or sixty of them, and

  16. we're going to dive into I don't even know what

  17. today's is. What's today's quote?

  18. Today's quote is who do you say I am?

  19. Oh, that's a good one. One. Do you say that

  20. I am?

  21. You say I am?

  30. exactly what you're gonna say.

  31. It's the Babylon B that's on the whole internet. The

  32. Babylon B is the most reliable source. And this one

  33. today is it's ade for some of the listeners, the

  34. single ladies, all the single ladies that listen that one

  39. that one?

  40. You know what's that?

  41. If you like it, then you should have put a

  42. ring on it?

  43. Oh yeah, I know that? Okay, So I do. I

  44. guess I don't know the song, but I'm familiar with it.

  45. Okay.

  46. I couldn't sing it, but yeah, okay. And that came

  47. up from a conversation we had where I said I

  48. don't know a thing.

  49. Yeah, sorry, that was sort of offline. Yeah, it was

  50. an offline conversation.

  51. I brought in Beyonce song, but I'm familiar with that one. Okay.

  52. So this one is ten dating red flags women should

  53. look out for, right and so ladies, this is helpful

  54. for you're writing it.

  55. I'm actually caring. We care, We do care.

  56. We care about our lady listeners, especially our single lady listeners.

  57. We want to make sure that they find good, godly men.

  58. And this here it is. Here's what it says. The

  59. dating scene is tough these days, with everyone using dating

  60. apps to meet and hook up. It's important for women

  61. to be careful about the guys they choose. Protect yourself

  62. by keeping a close eye out for those very concerning

  63. warning signs in the guy you're dating. So look out

  64. for these ten dating red flags. Number one, Yep, he

  65. doesn't open the door for you. So much for chivalry.

  66. Oh these are serious?

  67. Yeah, yeah, okay. Number two he does open the door

  68. for you. He's too nice, sick right, Okay, these are

  69. not serious. Number three he doesn't text back. He clearly

  70. hates you and is being unspeakably cruel.

  71. He should die, he should die, Oh my goodness.

  72. Number four he texts back right away. What a weirdo.

  73. He's so needy. So look out for these, ladies.

  74. Hey, you know what, these are the thoughts that men

  75. rush a should I wait? Maybe I'll text your but

  76. I'll wait a day.

  77. Yeah, so even our male single mail listeners. Care learning

  78. from you? Oh, complete take as a cue, open the

  79. door and don't open the door. That's right, reply, but

  80. not too soon. Here's number five. He makes less than

  81. five hundred k a year.

  82. Oh my goodness.

  83. Right, you need a man who can give you the

  84. lifestyle you deserve, ladies, that's funny. Number six he makes

  85. more than five hundred k year. Sounds like a workaholic.

  86. Stay away, ladies, that's great. Number seven he works out

  87. at the gym. Right, this is something look for. He

  88. works out the gym. This might indicate an unhealthy obsession

  89. with his appearance. Gross he doesn't work out at the gym.

  90. Who wants a flabby dude who doesn't take care of himself?

  91. It's gross, it's true.

  92. So medium, So medium yourself.

  93. He won't share his feelings. Number nine he's closed off.

  94. He's hiding something from you. And he's probably a serial killer.

  95. Wow wow, Well you know he should die if he texts.

  96. Yeah, and he's probably a serious killer. And number ten,

  97. here's the number ten thing to look out for. He

  98. shares his feelings. Great, now you have the itch again,

  99. so they go Yike's ladies, If you see any of

  100. these red flags run. Do you know any other dating

  101. red flags? Then you should let us know in the comment.

  102. Wow, there you go.

  103. Wow, I hope that was helpful.

  104. Clearly dating is a very simple formula.

  105. That's right. Oh it's super easy. Yeah, super easy. That's right.

  106. He doesn't open the door, he does open the door.

  107. He makes too much money, doesn't make enough money, It

  108. works out too much, doesn't work out enough.

  109. Have you seen you know? That five hundred k comment

  110. reminded me. Have you seen these guys who go viral?

  111. They just walk up to crowds of people and they

  112. have these recordings and they say, hey, let me ask

  113. you a question. So they were interviewing women, women who

  114. are like sort of I don't know if it's in

  115. La or something, but these women look like they're like

  116. sort of on on the town. You know, they're they're

  117. on the town. They're all dressed up with you know,

  118. like dresses and things, and these these men walk up

  119. to them and they just ask them random questions. And

  120. so the famous thing that that's so funny. He goes,

  121. so let me ask you a question. How tall? If

  122. you have you have a preference the guy you're looking for,

  123. how tall should he be? And everybody says over six

  124. foot okay. And then they say, okay, how much does

  125. he need to make in order for him to, you know,

  126. for you to consider being your husband? And all of

  127. them say two hundred and fifty or more two d

  128. and fifty thousand or more, right, And and then they

  129. ask a third question. I don't know what it is,

  130. something generic like that, and and and then they look

  131. it up and they go, okay, do you know what

  132. percentage of men in the world are your descriptors? Three percent?

  133. And they're like, like, if you need a man, who's who?

  134. Say who's over six foot? And it makes over two

  135. hundred and fifty thousand dollars. That's three percent of the world.

  136. They said, So good.

  137. Luck, good like good luck. Well there you go.

  138. It's so hilarious.

  139. Well, so this this article is all about trying to,

  140. you know, really understand who it is that you're dating

  141. and who you're marrying. Did Liz work really hard to

  142. figure out who you were?

  143. I would yeah, I would say so sure, Yeah.

  144. That's good. You know, Jesus wanted people to figure out

  145. who he was. Who do you say, I am wow?

  146. That what he said?

  147. What a clever, and yet you reached for it. Yeah.

  148. Yeah, I had to reach. I had to reach a

  149. little too far or was it far?

  150. Yeah?

  151. Yes, if you're a new listener, we try really hard

  152. to have the worst possible transitions. Yes, out of these things.

  153. But we are looking at when Jesus asks Peter, who

  154. do you say I am? Yes, And that's a huge question.

  155. I think that is relevant to all of us. So

  156. it's in Matthew chapter sixteen, and we're going to start

  157. in verse thirteen and read through. Verse twenty says when

  158. Jesus came to the region of Cessareah Philippi, he asked

  159. his disciples, who do people say that the son of

  160. Man is well? They replied, some say John the Baptist,

  161. and some say Elijah, and others say Jeremiah or one

  162. of the other prophets. And then he asked them, but

  163. who do you say I am? And Simon Peter answered,

  164. you are the Messiah, the son of the Living God.

  165. And Jesus supplied you are blessed Simon of John, because

  166. my Father in Heaven has revealed this to you. You

  167. did not learn this from any human being. And now

  168. I say to you that you are Peter, which means rock.

  169. And upon this rock I will build my church, and

  170. all the powers of hell will not conquer it. And

  171. I will give you the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven.

  172. Whatever you forbid on earth will be forbidden in heaven.

  173. Whatever you permit on earth will be permitted in heaven.

  174. And then he sternly warned the disciples not to tell

  175. anyone that he was the Messiah.

  176. So there's a lot of discussion around this passage, Yeah,

  177. there is, Yeah, there's discussion.

  178. Well. So, Cesarea Philippi is located several miles north of

  179. Sea Galilee, in an area that was ruled by King

  180. Herod's son Philip. So Cesarea Philippi. Right, So Philip built

  181. this this city, and it was a wicked, wicked city,

  182. and it had been even before he built the city.

  183. There there had been a lot of ritual worship from

  184. the Canaanites and from the Greeks and then finally the Romans.

  185. And this is the place, if any of our listeners

  186. have heard us talk about it before, this is where

  187. a part of the Jordan River flows out of this

  188. this this cave. But the cave had a bottomless pit

  189. in it and in Greek and Roman beliefs, bottomless pits

  190. often would reference the gates to Hell, and they believed

  191. that people or that spirits could come from the afterlife

  192. back into this realm through water coming up from deep places.

  193. And so they this cave that this river flowed out

  194. of that had this bottomless pit in it. Uh that

  195. had this river. There was also a square giant rock

  196. out in the middle of it, and they would do

  197. sacrifices there and they called that whole place the gates

  198. of Hell. Right.

  199. I referenced this with Kyle. Yeah, I got him confused.

  200. I said something about Gehenna. I was oftentimes, you know,

  201. Hell was referred to as something. Yeah, yeah, yeah, And

  202. I was like, and I got confused for a minute,

  203. but I was thinking of this, I was, I said,

  204. I said, isn't there a town somewhere? I just felt

  205. like I couldn't think of the town.

  206. So that was this. So Jesus literally takes these And

  207. by the way, the worship there was incredibly perverted. H

  208. There was a lot of temple prostitution, and a lot

  209. of animals and all kinds of stuff. It was. It

  210. was really really a wicked place. So do you remember,

  211. for anybody who's read through the Gospels a few times,

  212. there's this references of like Jesus doing his ministry mostly

  213. on the western and northern sides of the Sea Galilee,

  214. and then they would reference the ten Cities or the

  215. decapitalists is another thing, right, and it was these gentile

  216. cities over on the eastern side, and so the good

  217. Jewish kids would never go that direction. The good Jewish

  218. people never went over there. That's where the pigs were.

  219. That's where all of the stuff that they couldn't participate

  220. or wouldn't participate in that would defile them. And then

  221. Cesarea Philippi was the most wicked place, and Jesus takes

  222. his disciples there right before he goes to Jerusalem to

  223. give his life. He starts heading towards Jerusalem. And so

  224. in that context, he's telling them, hey, listen, no matter

  225. how bad it gets, the gates of Hell will never

  226. be able to prevail against against you guys.

  227. Right, yeah, and so against yeah. And so it's interesting

  228. how first of all he says, who do you say

  229. that I am? Because there's rumors out there, right, you know,

  230. which is I think the rumor of John the Baptist

  231. was weird because John the Baptist was still alive during

  232. the time, right, so you know, it's.

  233. Like, oh, no, John the Baptist had already been executed

  234. at this point.

  235. Oh he do you really? Yeah, okay, but but oh

  236. I guess I guess the reason why that's weird thought

  237. Jesus was born and seen with John the Baptist. Right,

  238. That's that's that's what I was meaning.

  239. Yeah, they were saying, it's like you have the spirit

  240. of John the Baptist in you kind of as what right, right?

  241. And and so anyway, I think that that is a

  242. little weird, you know that they would even say John

  243. the Baptist, but some people must have thought that. And

  244. then also others say reincar reincarnate, reincarnation of Elijah or Jeremiah,

  245. or maybe in the spirit of or you know, just

  246. all these weird rumors. People didn't know what to believe. Uh,

  247. and and and Jesus was uh asking one of the

  248. most prominent questions, which is which is, Hey, I want

  249. to know what you think. And that's a question that

  250. all of us have to face for ourselves, don't we

  251. We have to ask ourselves, like in light of the

  252. fact that everybody my phone. I put it on airplane mode.

  253. What what is it doing? Why is it doing this?

  254. Why it's on airplane mode? I don't know. I thought

  255. airplane moment. Stop it.

  256. Well, you got to turn off you have both oh

  257. Wi Fi there it is, okay, So it's a user error.

  258. So anyway, the point is is that we all have

  259. to wrestle with the fact that, uh, you know, regardless

  260. of who people think Jesus is around us, we have

  261. to answer that for ourselves. Who is Jesus to you? Right?

  262. That's why it's such an important question. Who do you

  263. say that I am? And then Peter gets the right answer,

  264. ding ding ding ding ding right, and and then he

  265. says this. Then he says, you are Peter, uh, and

  266. he's no longer Simon right blessed, or you Simon son

  267. of John. But then and now I'm going to give

  268. you a new name, Peter, which means rock. It actually

  269. translates into stone, like a stone that you can hold

  270. in your hand. Right. And then he says, you know

  271. this was revealed to you by your heavenly father. And

  272. then he says on this rock and he and this

  273. time he uses a different word for the word rock

  274. in the Greek. This this word rock when he when

  275. he says on this rock is the is the word

  276. that is used to describe mountain side or cliff right

  277. on this rock. And it's interesting because a lot of people,

  278. I mean, this is what the Catholic Church is built on,

  279. I should say, the structure of the Catholic Church. Right,

  280. So he says on this rock, So the Catholic Church

  281. would say that Peter was the first pope. He was

  282. given the keys to the Kingdom of Heaven and it

  283. was given to Peter specifically, and then on on Peter

  284. is the church built. And so that structure of the

  285. pope being in charge of the church. They would say

  286. that the pope that was just elected was in you know,

  287. direct succession to Peter. And which is really interesting coming

  288. from this verse. But if you if you, if you

  289. were to take other scholars, in fact, any scholar outside

  290. of I would say the Catholic Church, they would say

  291. that the rock that that you're going to build your

  292. church on is a different Greek word than the stone

  293. that you hold in your hand, and the mountain side

  294. or the big huge cliff side thing that you would

  295. build a church on would be the statement that Peter

  296. actually made. So the little rock made a big rock statement, right,

  297. so that the stone made a mountain statement. He came

  298. up with it, that was revealed from his father in heaven.

  299. And if you think about it, what is the one

  300. thing that the church Capital c is built upon?

  301. Right, I mean, he's the messiahs Yes, I've described it before.

  302. The Greek word for Peter is almost pebble, yes, right,

  303. stone you can fit in your pocket, right, right, kind

  304. of pebble.

  305. Yes.

  306. And then the Greek word that Jesus uses, or the

  307. word that Jesus is using for on this rock is

  308. like rocket gibraltar size, yes, right, yes, he said this

  309. little pebble made this rocket gibraltar statement. That's right, And

  310. that's what the church is going to be built on.

  311. That I am the Messiah, the son of the Living God.

  312. Yeah. And if you think, if you think about it.

  313. And that's why he warned them, don't go tell people

  314. I'm the Messiah. He doesn't say, don't go tell people.

  315. I just made Peter in charge of the church, right,

  316. He doesn't say that, He says, don't make don't tell

  317. anybody I'm the Messiah. That's how this passage ended. That's right, right,

  318. So the whole thing was never all about Peter. It

  319. was only all about Jesus.

  320. That's right, right, that's right. Yeah, and and and again

  321. there's you know, we we try to honor a lot

  322. of great things about every nomination every church. Right, is

  323. really clear that the Catholic Church has done great things

  324. for the human race over the years, there's no doubt

  325. about it. But some you know, some pretty bad things.

  326. But also it's also clear when you have a when

  327. you have a fundamental belief difference, right now, I don't

  328. think we should be afraid to point that out. And

  329. I think that so again, no disrespect in that disagreement, right, So.

  330. Anybody misapplication of this passage.

  331. That's that's what we believe. That's correct. And by the way,

  332. think about it. Right, So, if we were to gather

  333. all of the churches in the area, we would disagree

  334. on a lot of things. What makes a church a church, Well,

  335. a church is only a church if they believe in

  336. Jesus Christ as the way to heaven. Right. If a

  337. church preaches that the way to heaven is that Jesus

  338. Christ came down on the earth to die for the

  339. sins of humanity and that all we have to do

  340. is believe and accept that sacrifice by faith in our lives.

  341. That's the way to heaven. Then that constitutes a church.

  342. But there are churches who disagree, you know. So we

  343. had all the church leaders and let's just say in

  344. all of Michigan in this room, because we're on a

  345. we're on a stage of a very large room, seven

  346. hundred and fifty chairs. In this room, you would have differences, right,

  347. people would baptize different, they would send kids to different colleges,

  348. they would probably dress different, right, they would, they would,

  349. they would, They would have differences in in uh, you know,

  350. all these different different, different, different, different, different across the line.

  351. But if you put us all in one room, what

  352. is the one thing that we agree upon. Jesus is

  353. the Messiah. He is the son of the Living God,

  354. and that is what God is going to build his

  355. church on. That is the thing that is prevalent in

  356. this world two thousand years later. That's the thing we

  357. can measure, that's the thing we can see, that's the

  358. thing that has power. That's the thing that the church

  359. is built upon. So clearly, that is the application of

  360. what Jesus is saying.

  361. You know, in the Middle Eastern mindset, they can say

  362. two things at the same time, you know. So, so

  363. the Western mindset, very oftentimes is very linear. A leads

  364. to B, leads to C, leads to the one goes

  365. to two goes to the If this, then this that.

  366. That's how the Western mind tends to think. But the

  367. Middle Eastern mind and in Jesus way, he can be

  368. and they don't have any problem with double entendres all

  369. the time. Yeah, all the time. They mean two things

  370. at the same time and both are true. And so

  371. this little rock made, this Rock of Gibraltar's statement, I'm

  372. the Son of God, right, I'm the Messiah. That's what

  373. we're going to build the church on. And at the

  374. exact same time, he does hand Peter the keys and say, no,

  375. you're going to be the leader.

  376. That's right.

  377. He's saying both things, little Rock, I'm gonna use you

  378. to push forward the big Rock mission. Right that that

  379. that's what he's doing. And and so the whole idea

  380. being a Christian is that we're little Christs. It's the

  381. same thing. And so he does give Peter the keys.

  382. In fact, in the papal things. There's always the two

  383. keys right in the papal seal, that kind of thing.

  384. So he does give Peter these keys, not as the boss,

  385. but as the leader. And it would make responsibility, Yes,

  386. with responsibility. It makes sense because you remember, Peter was

  387. older than Jesus. More than likely history would put Peter

  388. somewhere around forty. John, the youngest of the disciples, was

  389. a teenager, probably fifteen sixteen years old when Jesus called him. Right,

  390. So all these men, when Jesus had to pay taxes,

  391. he was over thirty and Peter was over thirty, right,

  392. And they were the only two they had to go

  393. pay taxes, right, So all the rest were younger. They

  394. were younger men. So it's natural that Jesus would choose

  395. the oldest of them, the most experienced of them, the

  396. grown up among them. You're going to be the leader.

  397. But the focus of this passage, even he's also appointing

  398. Peter as a leader. Here, the focus of the passage

  399. is not Peter, you are the central focus of my church.

  400. The focus is the central focus of the church is

  401. I'm the Messiah. Now, don't go tell anybody yet, correct,

  402. because I haven't died. Well, it starts and ends with

  403. Jesus being the Messiah, and there's also a secondary statement

  404. of you're going to be a leader in my church.

  405. Well, there's two ways to pass on keys. Yeah, I

  406. can give you the keys to my home and say

  407. now you own this, good luck and I'm leaving. Or

  408. there's a way to say, hey, man it, I own this,

  409. but you're going to manage it, right, because because you

  410. have now the responsibility exactly, So, either Martha Ford is

  411. going to hand you the keys to Ford Field and

  412. either she's going to give it to you and you're

  413. gonna make the papers, or you're going to be the

  414. guy who opens and closes doors. And man, you know,

  415. and and and and uh, you know somehow blesses the

  416. entire city of Detroit, right because you own. Because you own,

  417. you manage the keys. And we all know that Jesus

  418. is the head of the church. Jesus doesn't walk away

  419. from the church. Jesus says I'm going to build the church.

  420. He doesn't say you're going to build the church. He says,

  421. I'm going to build the church. And and and so

  422. we all know that Jesus is the head of the church.

  423. So yeah, it's it's it's the application is is pretty

  424. you know, pretty applicable to the way that every church functions,

  425. right now, that's right, Yeah, so, which is great. And

  426. then and then Jesus then, uh, you know, he actually

  427. doesn't reveal himself as the Messiah until what the woman

  428. at the well right? Or had he already done that? Well, oh, he.

  429. Probably already got he'd already done that. This is now

  430. once they make this turn, they're heading back back towards Jerusalem.

  431. He's on his way to die. So and he's now

  432. heading towards Jerusalem.

  433. Yeah, I was picturing this was I guess it is

  434. Matthew sixteen, isn't that so?

  435. But it really comes down to this main question, and

  436. this is how we can wrap up. He said, who

  437. do you say I am? And I think even a

  438. lot of people who show up in Christian churches have

  439. a different view of Jesus than Jesus was hoping they

  440. would have of him. A lot of people have Jesus

  441. as he's the one that can get me to Heaven.

  442. He's the one that can answer my prayers. He's the

  443. one that is the founder of my religion, as opposed

  444. to the statement was the Messiah, the son of the

  445. Living God. The Messiah came to seek and to save

  446. that which was lost. He's a savior. Behold the lamb

  447. of God who takes away the sin of the world.

  448. John the Baptist said, he's literally the savior of the world.

  449. And so there is no significant relationship with Jesus until

  450. we realize we're sinners that need a savior. We are

  451. sinners that needed a Messiah. We needed somebody to come

  452. and rescue us. And until I know, until I come

  453. to the fact that I realized I need to be rescued,

  454. I'm not really experiencing Jesus in this way, right, and

  455. so I needed the Messiah first and foremost. All the

  456. other things are extras. He's not just my good luck

  457. chime that answers my prayers. It makes me feel good

  458. when I go to bed at night. He is the Messiah.

  459. He's the one who came on a rescue mission to

  460. save me, which means I needed saving. And until I

  461. get to that point where I can humble myself and

  462. say I needed a savior, I'm not really going to

  463. experience what Jesus came to do for me. Yeah, and

  464. so that question, who do you say, Jesus is you

  465. got to get to that answer.

  466. Yeah, so he's our savior based on this statement, and

  467. then Jesus himself and John in the Book of John says,

  468. I have not called you servants, but I've called you friends.

  469. So he's also a friend. His personal relationship Jesus, right,

  470. you know, Paul says that he's.

  471. There is no personal relationship until I realized I needed

  472. to do the Messiah.

  473. That's right. Saviors first, Yes, saviors first. Then's friend, right,

  474. and then then then Paul says, he's also are we're

  475. children of God?

  476. Right?

  477. So we're a child of God, we're heirs, we're airs

  478. of him. Right.

  479. So I mean there's all of all of those things

  480. after point where he's our savior.

  481. That's right. Yeah. So so the most important statement right right.

  482. That's that's why this question is so important. Who do

  483. you say? Because he's asking who are you? And John

  484. the Baptist is this great preacher? You just a really

  485. famous preacher. Elijah represents the prophets, right, Jeremiah prophets Uh.

  486. That that's what they're saying, is man, you're just you're

  487. as good as as as all these other great prophets

  488. and he goes, but really, who do you say, am?

  489. And there's a difference between being a religious leader and

  490. being the savior of the world, the Messiah. So yeah,

  491. that's great, that's where you got to get to first.

  492. Okay, well, hey, hopefully you're enjoying this series and we

  493. will see you next time on the Bible Guys,
