  1. You're listening to the Bible Guys, a podcast where a

  2. couple of friends talk about the Bible in fun, in

  3. practical ways. Jeff, eventually we're going to get a new

  4. role in.

  5. You think, so, yeah, I hope.

  6. So that is so unbelievably old.

  7. It is old that we used to do. You're like

  8. half the man you are in that video. Yeah yeah, yeah,

  9. weight was Yeah, you've lost so much weight.

  10. But guess what we used to use headphones?

  11. Did so on this because we were cool?

  12. Yeah back then, that was that lone. How how long

  13. has it been since we have not used headphones?

  14. More than a year?

  15. Oh, way more than a half I was. I would

  16. say closer to two years.

  17. Okay, yeah, probably a long time.

  18. That's how long that rollins?

  19. Trying to make a new roll in?

  20. I think so yeah, okay, yeah, well we'll get to

  21. it eventually, we'll get around to it.

  22. Okay.

  23. But but but everybody who listens regularly, if we change

  24. the audio of that, they're going to be like, it's

  25. not the same.

  26. They won't even know what they they don't even know

  27. what to do with Connor. He did a great job

  28. on that, great job. So all right, well man, we've

  29. got a cool uh what do you call these things

  30. that we do at the beginning segments, segments? We've got

  31. a cool segment.

  32. Yes, we do, before we dive into the quote that

  33. Jesus said, return home and tell how much God has

  34. done for you. I'm not sure that that is necessarily

  35. one that we quote all the time all the time,

  36. but it certainly is a attached to a famous story. Yes,

  37. we're gonna go ahead and fill in the blank today.

  38. So it says this desiree says, let's try this again,

  39. but this time Jeff will start a sentence, then Chris

  40. will have to complete it in an unexpected way. Okay,

  41. so we'll see if it goes better this time. Last

  42. time it was pretty good.

  43. Okay, So that goes to make So I'm going to

  44. start a sentence, yes, that you have to finish. Yes,

  45. maybe setting up some kind of story concept.

  46. Yeah, just well it says unexpected, which means I could

  47. do whatever I want.

  48. Okay, Well I'm going to be unexpected. Okakay. So there

  49. I was standing in the lobby with a chicken under

  50. my arm when the janitor came up and said.

  51. Do not slice its neck because I don't feel like

  52. cleaning up another bucket of blood today.

  53. Wow, that went dark.

  54. Well, it's only chicken killing.

  55. It's not human, it's only it's girls. We are not

  56. advocating that you go out and.

  57. Slice your chicken. Hey, listen, anybody who goes up in

  58. a farm.

  59. That's true, cut chicken. That's true. That's true. WHOA Okay,

  60. that is not what I was expecting to come out of.

  61. Well that you said, it says unexpected.

  62. I thought you were going to say something about don't

  63. squeeze it because I don't want to clean the mess,

  64. or something like that.

  65. No, I said, spilts blood.

  66. More eggs. You know, there's all kinds of things that

  67. could have happened there besides well, guess whying it. Guess

  68. what you watch too many movies. No, I I have.

  69. Actually believe it or not. This is this is a

  70. true statement. I've actually wrestled with the idea because I'm

  71. not a hunter. Right, so, if you like I would,

  72. I would never go hunting. I just I never could

  73. do it. But I've held chickens before, and I've heard

  74. stories about chickens, probably more so than any other animal,

  75. about how to prepare chicken.

  76. You and so and so I just think you can

  77. do that one.

  78. Visually, No, of course I cannot, But visually I picture

  79. it every time I think of a chicken. So me

  80. holding a chicken, that's all I think about it.

  81. That's how you think about it.

  82. Because people say, this is what you do, this is

  83. what you do, and I'm like, I'm like, I could

  84. never do that, right, I'm glad other people do.

  85. Yeah, but when I was growing up, we butchered one

  86. hundred chickens in two days.

  87. Right, exactly exactly.

  88. I take it back, it was ninety nine because one

  89. of them had died, but yeah, we had ninety nine.

  90. That's crazy since that we butchered in two days. So

  91. isn't that the ones.

  92. Where it's just the thing man, where you were wanting

  93. male and female? They were all females.

  94. Well, we wanted we wanted hens, and somehow my dad

  95. got ninety nine roosters because we wanted to I wanted

  96. to sell eggs. Yeah, so we had to fat them

  97. up in the butcher.

  98. That's so good, go ahead. So that's another sentence.

  99. Well that was my only sentence.

  100. Oh no, we're supposed to do a few.

  101. Oh, we're supposed to do a few.

  102. Yeah, say what, let's just do one more.

  103. Okay, let's just do one more yep, Okay, go. When

  104. the officer walked up to the to my window, I said, would.

  105. You like to go on a date?

  106. What?

  107. I don't know. I just saw a TikTok you just proposed, well,

  108. not me personally, a hypothetical person in the car.

  109. No. I thought it was yours story. You're supposed to

  110. so I start your story. So it's your story, So

  111. it's me.

  112. I wasn't. I wasn't thinking it was me.

  113. Okay, the helen me tell you the reason why.

  114. I just saw like a TikTok video or something where

  115. a girl got pulled over and she asked the officer out.

  116. I literally just saw it like it might have been

  117. this morning or yesterday. Okay, well I don't feel like

  118. that counted.

  119. Well okay, I didn't do it from me. Okay, all right, you.

  120. Want to do one more.

  121. There I was in the ocean, yep, and I had

  122. just stood up on my surfboard when.

  123. The Lockness monster came up and took a bite out

  124. of my shin.

  125. Wow, there it is in the ocean.

  126. Yes, that's the reason why they haven't.

  127. Spotted him because he's cruising the ocean.

  128. All all water sources lead to the ocean.

  129. Okay, wow, all water sources except the Dead Sea.

  130. That's correct.

  131. And that's correct, and all of the other lakes that

  132. are below sea level.

  133. You know, you know what I was trying to quote, right, No,

  134. in Finding Nemo, he said all drains lead to the ocean.

  135. Oh okay, yeah, so sorry quoting Nemo.

  136. Yes, Finding Nemo, I was actually quoting.

  137. I would have thought that a cartoon wouldn't be entirely

  138. scientifically correct. I would have never thought.

  139. Well, I mean, they weren't trying to be scientific. It

  140. was a fish.

  141. Was It was a joke? Yeah, it was a joke.

  142. I don't remember the name of the fish though, I

  143. don't either whoever his name was.

  144. Okay, well, here we are now, and speaking of leading

  145. to water, I don't know. Is that what we've got?

  146. No, I would say, speaking of unexpected endings.

  147. Unexpected endings, Oh that's a good one. Yeah, yeah, we're

  148. talking about Jesus.

  149. Who would have ever thought that the deranged man filled

  150. with demons would end up being in his own right mind?

  151. Yeah, Or that the pigs would run down the hill

  152. into the water. Yes, I mean that's what I was saying.

  153. All things run down, all of it is unexpected. Okay.

  154. So anyways, that was a terrible, terrible rolling set up

  155. for this story. But we are in Luke position. Yeah, yeah,

  156. we are in Luke chapter eight and verse twenty six.

  157. It says, so they arrived in the region of the Garacenes,

  158. across the lake from Galilee. You remember when Jesus had stopped

  159. the storm.

  160. I do remember.

  161. Remember on the other side it was just massive crowds

  162. and He's like, hey, we got leave these crowds. Let's

  163. go to the other side. In the middle, there's this

  164. big storm. He wakes up, says, peace be still. When

  165. they get to the other side of the lake. This

  166. story happens, Yes, as soon as he gets off the boat.

  167. So they arrived in the region of Garriscenes, across the

  168. lake from Galilee. As Jesus was climbing out of the boat,

  169. a man who was possessed by demons came out to

  170. meet him. For a long time, he had been homeless

  171. and naked, living in the tombs outside the town. As

  172. soon as he saw Jesus, he shrieked, fell down in

  173. front of him and then he screamed, why are you

  174. interfering with me? Jesus, Son of the Most High God?

  175. Please I beg you don't torture me. For Jesus had

  176. already commanded the evil spirit to come out of him.

  177. This spirit had often taken control of the man. Even

  178. when he was placed under guard and put in chains

  179. and shackles, he simply broke them and rushed out into

  180. the wilderness, completely under the demon's power. Jesus demanded, what

  181. is your name? Legion? He replied, for he was filled

  182. with many demons. The demons kept begging Jesus not to

  183. send them into the bottomless pit. There happened to be

  184. a large herd of pigs feeding on the hill side nearby,

  185. and the demons begged him to let them enter into

  186. the pigs. So Jesus gave them permission. So the demons

  187. came out of the man and entered the pigs, and

  188. the entire herd plunged down the steep hillside into the

  189. lake and drown. When the herdsman saw it, they fled

  190. to the nearby town and the surrounding countryside, spreading the

  191. news as they ran. People rushed out to see what

  192. had happened. A crowd soon gathered around Jesus and they

  193. saw the man who'd been freed from the demons. He

  194. was sitting at Jesus' feet, fully clothed and perfectly sane,

  195. and they were all afraid. Then those who had seen

  196. what had happened told the others how the demon possessed

  197. man had been healed. And all the people in the

  198. region of the Gharriscenes begged Jesus to go away and

  199. leave them alone, for a great wave of fear swept

  200. over them. So Jesus returned to the boat and left,

  201. crossing back to the other side of the lake. The

  202. men had been freed from the demons begged to go

  203. with him, but Jesus sent him home, saying, no, go

  204. back to your family and tell them everything God has

  205. done for you. So he went all through the town,

  206. proclaiming the good things Jesus had done for him. Oh, well,

  207. that corrected my application from the other day. The other day,

  208. I said, Jesus told him, don't tell people. Oh remember

  209. we were talking, okay about how so many times these

  210. don't tell people, and I just lumped this story in it.

  211. But he didn't. Jesus told him no, you can't travel

  212. with me. I want your Your best witness is going

  213. to be at home. Yeah yeah, yeah, right right yeah,

  214. and it was the evidence of his healings that was

  215. the witness. But he went home and told everybody.

  216. Yeah, and didn't. Another version records the same story and

  217. says that he actually went to the ten surrounding cities

  218. the capitalists. Oh yeah, yeah, yeah yeah yeah. So actually

  219. maybe the other one includes something else too, but yes,

  220. he says, yeah, don't go with me, but go tell everybody,

  221. to go, tell everybody, and yeah, he went out around

  222. and he didn't just Jesus didn't say go to the

  223. ten cities. Jesus just said stay here. And then it

  224. says that he went to the capitalists. Am I saying

  225. that right?

  226. Yes?

  227. Yes, And it's the ten cities, Yeah, the ten cities

  228. surrounding cities City yep, Deca, yep, and uh yes, yes,

  229. thank you. I was reading I was reading a Roman

  230. numeral just yesterday, and I was trying to figure out

  231. all the all the meanings of it, and I couldn't

  232. do it. It was like m c l V one

  233. one and I was like, well, I know what V means,

  234. I know what one one means and m's a thousand.

  235. What's what's L?

  236. L is fifty? Oh? Is it?

  237. Okay? Yeah, darn it. I wish I could go back

  238. now and see the number is.

  239. Isn't it rom L is fifty.

  240. I don't know what L is. I know C is

  241. one hundred, so L has to be fifty, You're right,

  242. and then uh and then uh V is five and

  243. then one is one. So yep, anyway, anyway, the uh

  244. so anyway Jesus, Yeah, yeah, I'm trying to I'm trying

  245. to shift my brain. Oh yeah, there it is. I'm

  246. trying to shift my brain. So here's what I love

  247. about this, this conversation that the demon demons immediately recognize

  248. Jesus and when they see him they shriek. So the

  249. Book of James says even the demons believe, and they tremble.

  250. It also says that if you, if you submit yourselves

  251. therefore to God, resist the devil, he will flee from you.

  252. So it tells us that the demons are afraid. The

  253. demons recognize Jesus's authority. They literally call him by his title.

  254. They say, Jesus, Son of the Most High God, and

  255. do not torture me, do not. They're afraid because here

  256. these demons possess this man, and they have just wreaked

  257. havoc in this man's life. And then Jesus comes along

  258. and they're like, oh no, right, and then they say, just, uh,

  259. you know, allow us to go into the herd of swine, which,

  260. by the way, is a crazy, crazy turn of events,

  261. isn't it.

  262. Yeah.

  263. And now you were in the Sea of Galilee when

  264. we when we sailed because I went at a different

  265. time than you, but our group when we were there,

  266. we sailed to the south near this city, and there

  267. was a massive cliff that had a slight slope and

  268. a complete drop off. And they said, this is where

  269. the pigs most likely would have run down and jumped

  270. off the cliff. Did they tell you that too?

  271. Yeah, well, we could see it from where we were.

  272. We were more to the north, but when we turned

  273. around you could see the hill on the cliff side

  274. over there. Together it's not a big lake, so.

  275. Right right right, and which is pretty amazing. And and

  276. so just the going goings on of these demons, uh,

  277. they you know, how many demons were inside this man

  278. to possess an entire herd of Swan.

  279. A legion was the largest unit in the Roman army.

  280. This according to the Life Applications of out. I don't

  281. know why people don't have steady bibles, it says, well,

  282. what do you mean, maybe people do? No, No, I don't.

  283. I can't imagine why somebody wouldn't. Oh, there you go, Yeah,

  284. that's it. A legion was the largest unit in the

  285. Roman army, having between three thousand and six thousand soldiers.

  286. What the man was possessed by not one, but many demon.

  287. Three thousand and six thousand. I did not know that.

  288. I thought legion meant a thousand.

  289. Well, let me ask. Maybe the Bible's lying to us.

  290. Let's find out what it would be.

  291. The scholars writing the study notes, not the actual Bible.

  292. But I just preached on this the other week. It

  293. must have been three four weeks ago. And when I

  294. was imitating, when I was reading the scripture, I said, we.

  295. Are legion, This says. A Roman legion, at his peak

  296. strength during the late Republican early Empire, typically had about

  297. four thousand to six thousand soldiers.

  298. Well, there you go.

  299. The exact number varied over time and by circumstances.

  300. There it is son of a gun, so many more

  301. than we think.

  302. And so when people talk about Allegian, they often mean

  303. the core Roman citizen soldiers, roughly five thousand men. It

  304. is a good ballpark. Wow, so you're talking somewhere around

  305. five thousand.

  306. So have you ever been asked the question over the years,

  307. how many angels do you believe there are? Because it

  308. does say it doesn't give us a total number in

  309. the Bible, correct, But it does say that when Satan

  310. rebelled against God, Lucifer, who was the chief angel beautiful

  311. by the way in appearance, that that one third of.

  312. The angel, the angel stars fell from Yeah, the.

  313. Stars fell from heaven, and so they went down to

  314. they were cast down to the earth, and they became

  315. known as demons. And so whether or not their countenance

  316. has changed, whether or not they're still beautiful, we don't

  317. really have much insight into that other than you know, uh,

  318. that Satan appears to Adam and Eve in the form

  319. of a snake or actually a serpent.

  320. Right, Well, so the question how many how many angels

  321. are there and how many demons are there?

  322. Yeah? Well, I mean this insight here if it's if

  323. their name is Legion, there's a good chance there's thousands

  324. in one man. Yeah, which means which means there's probably

  325. a surplus of other demons elsewhere. Right.

  326. Oh yeah, surely this guy didn't have all the demons, correct,

  327. How important is he? Because you know, angels and demons

  328. can't be everywhere at one time. Only God can be,

  329. which means then the devil has limited resources and he

  330. has to marshal his resource. It's why the Bible talks

  331. a lot in military terms when it talks about angels

  332. and demons, right, It's because the devil has to marshal

  333. his troops. He has to use his troops. There's spiritual

  334. warfare going on, and so he has to make sure

  335. that his troops are on the front lines of spiritual warfare.

  336. So the idea that this guy that the devil would

  337. just willy nilly, just go, hey, let's send five thousand

  338. into that guy, right, unless there's maybe millions of angels

  339. well and millions of demons.

  340. I have read in commentaries before that would suggest that

  341. there's millions. Yeah, I would think so, yeah, I would

  342. I would think that. Yeah, you know, you think about

  343. you know, the you know, I think I literally described

  344. I think it was yesterday. I was at lunch with

  345. one of our people at our staff, and I told

  346. them the story about how I was riding motorcycle and

  347. I went down at fifty five miles an hour and

  348. came up without a scratch, and so, you know, the

  349. ambulance came. I only had a half a helmet on.

  350. It was all tore up. It was literally just all

  351. scratched up. And I didn't have a single scratch on

  352. my entire body except for I had these leather gloves

  353. on and they had the knuckles were exposed, and this

  354. knuckle had a tiny little scratch on it where there

  355. was a little bit of blood. And I went down

  356. a fifty five on asphalt and I rolled like a

  357. piece of sausage for like forty yards.

  358. Which, by the way, that's an incredibly descriptive I know,

  359. piece of sausage. Yes, fabulous for me.

  360. Thank you.

  361. You enjoyed that.

  362. Yeah. Well, the people behind me who actually saw me

  363. fall said I was flailing. I was flailing. I just

  364. like kept on rolling over and over and over. And

  365. the ambulance comes and the guy who's you know, literally

  366. you know, shining the light in my eyes says, I've

  367. been an ambulance driver for thirteen years. He said, I'm

  368. a motorcycle owner myself. He said, how fast did you

  369. say you were going when you went down? I said

  370. fifty five miles an hour? And he said, I have never, never, ever,

  371. ever seen anybody who's went down at fifty five. He goes,

  372. I'm literally going to give you permission to get back

  373. on your bike and ride. He goes, you are completely fine,

  374. And so I don't know about you, but I'm like,

  375. that's divine. Yeah, So I mean you could try to

  376. explain it away another way.

  377. Bob says that we have angels that look over us

  378. and guard us God's people, that kind of thing. Yeah.

  379. Well, so I'm thinking, hey, if if I have an angel, right,

  380. and I've had an angel experience before, by the way,

  381. which is a whole other sermon altogether, I don't have

  382. time to tell that, but I believe it was an angel.

  383. Hebrew says, we attend angels unaware, right, and so I

  384. believe I've experienced that. That means there has to be

  385. a plethora of angels, Oh sure, at God's disposal.

  386. And then on top of that, you want to know

  387. how powerful the angels are in the Old Testament, there's

  388. one story one angel defeats seventy five thousand people one

  389. one angel. Right, So as you're trying to work out

  390. how powerful is the angel, God has a sign to

  391. taking care of you. Well, there you go, right, right,

  392. even if it happens to be the guy who's trying

  393. to earn his wings on.

  394. Oh stop, it's a wonderful life.

  395. Yeah, was Clarence Clarence yea, even if you got Clarence right,

  396. he's a pretty tough one, That's what I'm trying to say,

  397. compared to us. So then that's also because.

  398. By the way, Jimmy Stewart said, uh, figures you'd be

  399. the kind of angel I get, that's what he says.

  400. That's what he says to Clarence.

  401. That's so good. But anyways, that's not how angels happened.

  402. They're a distinct creation of nobody that comes an angel.

  403. That's right, And by the way, that's important. I would say,

  404. I honestly truly believe this. I believe the majority of

  405. our listeners, probably up to seventy five percent of every

  406. single Christian listening to this, probably don't differentiate the fact

  407. that angels are not humans they get wings because because

  408. it's become such a great part of our culture, largely

  409. in part yeah, yeah, what did I say, a great part. Yeah,

  410. it's a significant part of our culture, largely because of

  411. that movie. That movie has become world renow. Sure, and

  412. and so you see all the time people with cartoons,

  413. you know, cartoon people die and all of a sudden

  414. they have wings and they get Halo's and you know,

  415. you see comic book, you know, cartoons written about this,

  416. and every funeral that I go to, I bet you,

  417. goodness gracious, almost half of them refer to the person

  418. deceased as getting their wings and becoming angels.

  419. Oh right, I mean, I know, you know, my angel

  420. with me. Now, there's a lot of songs that talk

  421. about that. Yes, that's what people think, but it's not true.

  422. It's not angels. Angelic beings were distinctly created by God

  423. as a distinct creation different from humanity, that's right. And

  424. so people don't become angels, that's right. We are a spirit,

  425. we're a soul in the spirit, and in Christ, then

  426. you are alive. In Christ. The Bible says he gives

  427. us a new body.

  428. Right, Yeah, so my son and I and my wife.

  429. We were going to a wedding. I just did my

  430. nephew's wedding in Ohio last weekend, and we came across

  431. this old antique store in this small town township, and

  432. my wife loved it, of course, and they were playing

  433. k love and Christian music and they said God bless

  434. you and all these things in My wife was like,

  435. I want to own this store anyway. So we're in

  436. there and they had one of those old adding machines

  437. they kind of go toiing chi ching like this, and

  438. Stephen grabbed it and he goes chi ching and he goes, hey,

  439. look fellas, I'm giving out wings because that's that's what

  440. that's what Nick did behind the barn.

  441. So we should get into the story of this guy then.

  442. So this guy is absolutely tortured by his circumstances. I

  443. don't know what led to his possession, right, we don't know,

  444. but it's very significant his past. You can only imagine

  445. what would lead to being possessed by thousands of demons

  446. is incomprehensible. It's not just something. I don't believe that

  447. you just suddenly are possessed by demons. It's something that

  448. you have to kind of allow or open up in

  449. your life, right, whatever.

  450. Some people pursue or mess around with the mystic arts

  451. or you know, Luigi boards, you know.

  452. Voodoo begin is the beginning of the process, I think

  453. for people when they begin to open up themselves to

  454. this evil spiritual realm thing. Whatever happened. Anyways, he's howling

  455. at the moon and running naked and they can't change him.

  456. And he's living in.

  457. The tombs, in the graveyard, in the tomb.

  458. And it's just something happens in the graveyard. When Jesus

  459. shows up, he casts out these demons. And then the

  460. next phrase is that he was sitting there clothed in

  461. his right mind. When the people show up mad because

  462. the pigs are dead, right, right, they're terrified to this guy.

  463. They won't let him live in the city, right, they're

  464. in the village. They've tried to chain him up. But

  465. then the economy gets affected and that's more important than people, right,

  466. And they're mad at Jesus about the fact that the

  467. economy gets screwed up, and they're more concerned about their

  468. money than they are about this man. But he's sitting

  469. there and he's in his right mind. Now we know

  470. that this is a gentile town. This isn't a Jewish

  471. town because they're raising pigs. So it's interesting to me

  472. Jesus was doing miracles for non Jews just like he

  473. was doing for the Jews right in the situation. And

  474. that's a very significant moment.

  475. So yeah, and I also love the fact that Jesus

  476. tells the man. You know, the man has an idea,

  477. and he says, let me go with you, and Jesus says, no,

  478. I have a better plan for you. I have a

  479. different plan for you. Right. And oftentimes, you know, we

  480. we we ask God for certain things and we say God,

  481. I want this. Uh. And by the way, a lot

  482. of our requests are noble. They're good intention right. I mean,

  483. who wouldn't want to get on the boat and go

  484. with Jesus? Sure? Right, Hey, it could be your witness.

  485. I'm going to go into full time ministry with you, Jesus. Yes,

  486. And he says, no, your greatest ministry is with your family,

  487. right yeah.

  488. With your friends, where you have the reputation, where you

  489. have influence. Go tell people and tell them who you

  490. used to be because people have heard of him, right

  491. and and and so yeah, he has an idea and

  492. Jesus has a different idea. And I think that sometimes

  493. in our lives we do the same thing. We say, well, God,

  494. I want to do this, or I want to become this,

  495. or I want to you know, take this step in

  496. my life. And sometimes God whispers us, you know, to us,

  497. or you know, closes the door and opens another window

  498. kind of a thing where it's it's like, you know,

  499. God has a different idea, and it's still you know,

  500. a great idea. In fact, it's a better idea because

  501. it's God's idea. And so sometimes we have to accept

  502. the fact that God has a different course for us

  503. than we want for ourselves.

  504. Right right, Yeah, powerful there.

  505. Are people who come and say, I want to be

  506. a preacher like you, but they don't have they don't

  507. have the gift of teaching.

  508. Yeah, But to be clear, almost always then the other

  509. course God has is all about impact too, that's right,

  510. even though he couldn't see it. So go back to

  511. your family and tell them everything God has done for you.

  512. It's not like just go back home, get your job

  513. and you know, live your life. It's go back now

  514. and leverage what I've done. God's not going to waste

  515. the hurt in your life. He's not going to waste

  516. your story. Your story is God's story in your life.

  517. So now go back and tell people what Jesus has

  518. done for you. That's what he's saying. That's right, it's powerful.

  519. That's really good. Okay. Well, hey, that's all of our time,

  520. so we will see you next time, hopefully on the Bible. Guys,
