  1. You're listening to The Bible Guys, a podcast where a

  2. couple of friends talk about the Bible in fun, in

  3. practical ways. Hey, good morning, everybody. Welcome to the Bible Guys.

  4. We appreciate you tuning in for another episode.

  5. It's gonna be amazing today, it is.

  6. It's going to be very amazing.

  7. You brought your A game, I can tell I think.

  8. So I went home and turned around and got it.

  9. I was I left the house with a b game

  10. and I was like, I better turn around.

  11. I'll have that in the closet, dusted it off right

  12. right to go.

  13. So here it is today. I'm Chris, this is Jeff,

  14. and we are the Bible Guys, and today we're launching

  15. into a segment, or next not a segment, a series,

  16. and it is called God's Presence and Nearness.

  17. How cool is that?

  18. Yeah, So the whole week we're talking about how God

  19. is near us and God is promised to be with us,

  20. but in different contexts of our lives. So it's uh,

  21. and then next week can be a little different. But

  22. it's this idea that that we're we're banking on the

  23. promises that are given in different contexts. So we got

  24. to come up with the name of it. What is

  25. it called unshaken? Is that what you called it? Unshakable?

  26. Well, I just think it's it's our fifty favorite promises

  27. of God.

  28. Okay, how about that fifty.

  29. Favorites, fifty favorite promises of God.

  30. That kind of like that fifty favorite which means ten weeks.

  31. Well, it's five weeks.

  32. Oh, five weeks?

  33. Is that five weeks? Is that what we're doing? Ten weeks?

  34. What depends on how many promises per day? Per day?

  35. That's true? Yeah, yeah, because it's about just our favorite

  36. promises of God TVD TVD.

  37. All right, very cool. Okay, so so today before we

  38. dive into that, we have a segment, and today is unusual.

  39. We haven't done this too much. We've done it once

  40. or twice before. But Desiree wants us to do Google

  41. Translate karaoke. Okay, Jeff will run through excuse me, He'll

  42. run lyrics through multiple Google Translate languages, then read or

  43. sing or sing, Jeff, there's an option for you.

  44. No, I'm not singing.

  45. No. Look it says no, it says Then Jeff will

  46. read or sing the garbled result to see if Chris

  47. can figure out what the actual song is.

  48. Oh well, yeah, I'm not singing it. I'll read it.

  49. She's throwing the option. She is for you to sing.

  50. I hear the option.

  51. However, you know that all of our listeners want you

  52. to sing.

  53. I know they do. Yeah yeah, but see what we'll

  54. do once you do it?

  55. Right now?

  56. Happened right now? They will never get this feeling back

  57. if I sing, if I sing well, and they never

  58. get back the desire for it, saying it just goes away.

  59. Sing a sentence or it just goes away. So no,

  60. because they've heard you sing, they just want you to

  61. sing more.

  62. Okay, So you can't claim it.

  63. You can't claim that because they've heard you sing something.

  64. M hm.

  65. So sorry about this.

  66. This is never gonna work.

  67. Okay, we'll try it again, or just try it. We'll

  68. see how it goes, even if it's a failure. Let's

  69. let's let our listeners in with the.

  70. Phare we go ahead? Ready?

  71. Ye?

  72. Whoa oh oh mon do and font whoa oh oh mon?

  73. Do a more?

  74. Oh wait a minute, mom, do that's French.

  75. That's French?

  76. Well more is love?

  77. Right? Yeah?

  78. Whoa my love?

  79. I know it's kind of a surprising one.

  80. Is that what we're supposed to do, is that the assignment?

  81. I read multiple languages. Yes, I ran through language. I

  82. chose a song, I ran it through the language. Then

  83. I just read the lyrics to you. But I don't

  84. speak any of these languages. So yeah, so that's why

  85. I chose that was a chorus.

  86. Can you do it through Spanish? Because I know a

  87. little Spanish?

  88. Well, I will and minute, but not in this song.

  89. It's multiple language.

  90. Okay, all right, all right, all right? Whoa oh oh something.

  91. Whoa oh oh mond do in font whoa oh oh

  92. oh mon do a more. We've got people who go,

  93. I know what that is? Really yeah, it's uh trying

  94. to think of the whoa oh let me see.

  95. I don't know too many like whoah oh?

  96. Let me see what year this song was?

  97. Crazy?

  98. The song was written, Man, I feel like a woman

  99. nineteen eighty seven.

  100. Show h my something my love.

  101. Yeah.

  102. I don't want to bore the listeners anymore.

  103. Okay, what is it? It's a whoa oh oh, sweet

  104. child of mine? Whoa oh oh oh, sweet love of mine?

  105. Next time, pick a song I'm really familiarly.

  106. You don't know guns and roses, yes, but you you

  107. were busy listening to I wouldn't.

  108. I wouldn't, I wouldn't have. I don't know a single

  109. lyric to that song other than sweet Child of Mind.

  110. Well that's those were literally the lyric.

  111. That's literally the lyric I gave you. Literally, it's the

  112. only thing I read.

  113. It's alone and font that's okay, child of Mine.

  114. Oh, I'm sure that all the French majors out there.

  115. Okay, you appreciate it if they were freaking out. Okay,

  116. So now I have to do another one. Yeah, yeah,

  117. these are hard.

  118. Do Spanish?

  119. Do Spanish?

  120. Take a song that you think i'd know?

  121. Okay, a song that you know?

  122. Yeah, you know? The Guns N' Roses is a little

  123. out of my although, you know, I mean I was

  124. a nineteen eighties child and I definitely listened to those

  125. kinds of songs.

  126. Yeah. Well, anyways, I don't know what to do with

  127. you if you don't know a guns and Roses song?

  128. Uh? Do guns and Roses have a lot of hits?

  129. Okay?

  130. Did they?

  131. Did? They have a lot of it?

  132. I don't know.

  133. Okay, here we go. I've got one coming up, and

  134. it's gonna be amazing for you. Okay, hmm, let me

  135. see if I can figure out what the course This.

  136. Is gonna be fun that you're gonna actually read it

  137. in Spanish. Yes, this is great. Make sure you try

  138. to do an accent too.

  139. It's probably not going to do it. Okay, here we go,

  140. and then we're gonna put it. I just copied and

  141. paste it or copied it. Now I'm gonna paste it

  142. here into this app translate.

  143. Choosing the song.

  144. Yeah, well, I mean you got to get the song

  145. so and then you want it in Spanish. Spanish is

  146. the preferred thing because that's what you're an expert at.

  147. You're an expert a Spanish. Okay, go ahead, this one.

  148. You should know Tango estacosa, donde and vecchio pero nukosoi

  149. mas sabio last media, nochez sey convierten and miss tardes

  150. kwondo me depression, trabaja n el torno de noce totis

  151. lost personas a los k he ignorado, sequi don he

  152. and les habitatio.

  153. I have no idea. I caught like fifteen or twenty

  154. words like like that. I sort of knew what it was.

  155. There was the work.

  156. Wait, okay, and there, there's uh that was there.

  157. There's where I caught that, don'te I caught I caught

  158. uh tango tango ya I have yep.

  159. Okay, so it starts that way. What most what's the

  160. most famous song that starts off Yo tango estacosa I

  161. have DoD and the heyo wait wait sabio. That's the sentence,

  162. say it again, Yo tango esta coosa donde and the

  163. hako pero nunka soy mas sabio so massabio. Uh huh.

  164. See our listeners are freaking out. I have this thing

  165. where I get older but just never wiser.

  166. Is that what it says?

  167. Yes?

  168. What is it?

  169. It's I have this thing where I get older, but

  170. just never wiser. Midnight's become afternoons. My depression works. The

  171. graveyard chief, all the people have ghosted. Stand there in

  172. the room. Well, I don't know this In English, it's

  173. are you serious?

  174. I said us a song that I know.

  175. You should have known it. It's Anti Hero by Taylor Swift.

  176. It's her biggest selling song.

  177. Oh yeah, listen, I.

  178. May like I may every Taylor Swift song.

  179. No, this is this is not even close. So this

  180. is not this is not close to the truth. Okay,

  181. I know about seven Taylor Swift songs.

  182. Okay, so what I chosen? I like Lady Gaga. Chef

  183. chosen Lady Gaga.

  184. I like her, but but I only went to see

  185. her in concert because she was.

  186. Okay, Okay, so it's gonna have to be like Broadway. Now,

  187. listen Broadway song. If you if you would have chosen.

  188. Any Carrie Underwood song, if you'd have chosen any Mariah

  189. Carey song of the early days, or if you would

  190. have chosen classic you know.

  191. Okay, Well, that's not me. That's not me trying to

  192. think of I'm trying to think of time from the eighties.

  193. You know, Whitney Houston songs. You don't know Guns and

  194. Roses songs. I would have What is wrong with you?

  195. I would have? No, I I know.

  196. Okay, I'm just thinking of female artists. Okay, because you

  197. chose Taylor Swift. Okay, I see, I know every Sight

  198. t Win song, Okay, every Shania twice. Well, they'll keep

  199. that in my on my list next time. Okay, Hey,

  200. we've killed that one, so let's move on. Yeah, yeah,

  201. that was awful.

  202. We're gonna bury it. Move on.

  203. Yeah, we're gonna kill that when I move on. So

  204. we are in this whole thing.

  205. By the way, speaking of speaking of kill, these promises

  206. slay today.

  207. Okay, there's your transition. So we are in the Book

  208. of Hebrews and we're talking about the promises of God

  209. and these are some of our favorite promises, right, And

  210. I think it's really important for Christians because a lot

  211. of Christians have a lot of anxiety and struggle with

  212. their faith, mostly because they don't know what God's promised.

  213. And God can't lie, right, Yeah, So when he gives

  214. you a promise, he's going to keep that promise. Most

  215. of his promises are if then promises, but he makes

  216. a promise, he'll keep his promise. And so we just thought, hey,

  217. let's take some time to go through as many the

  218. promises of God as we can. And this week, really

  219. the promises of God that we're talking about kind of

  220. cluster on the idea of his presence in our life.

  221. Right, do you really think most are if then promises?

  222. I know there are a lot of if then promises.

  223. Yeah, but they are. But I did the work, did you, Yeah, Yeah,

  224. there's more that are if then, there's qualifiers to most

  225. of God's promises. He doesn't just say, hey, I'm going

  226. to make all your wildest dreams come true. It gets

  227. you draw near to me, then I will draw near

  228. to you.

  229. I'm only asking about the quantity.

  230. Yeah, like fifty Yeah, most joys, most of the promises

  231. in the Bible are are connected to a an obedience component.

  232. If you do this, then I'll.

  233. Overwhelmingly overwhelmingly really yes, I would not have guessed that.

  234. Huh yeah, wow, okay.

  235. Yeah, they're always connected to a thing, right, So like

  236. today is connected to a thing. Yeah, right, so they're

  237. they're they're always connected to Hey, listen, I'm telling you

  238. how the best way is to live. So live this

  239. way and then I'll bless you like this. And that's

  240. that's that's how he always always does it. So and

  241. so yeah, let's just read this. We're going to read

  242. in Hebrews chapter thirteen. This is the last chapter. So

  243. this kind of closing out the book. These are the

  244. concluding words. It says, keep on loving each other as

  245. brothers and sisters. Don't forget the show hospitality to strangers,

  246. for some have done this. Some who have done this

  247. have entertained angels without realizing it. That's kind of a

  248. neat idea. Remember in prison as if they were yourself,

  249. if you were there yourself. Remember also those being mistreated,

  250. as if you felt their pain in your own bodies.

  251. Give honor to marriage, and remain faithful to one another

  252. in marriage. God will surely judge people who are immoral

  253. and those committed altery. Then he says, don't love money.

  254. Be satisfied with what you have, for God has said,

  255. I will never leave you, I will never abandon you,

  256. I will never fail you. I will never abandon you.

  257. So we can say with confidence, the Lord is my helper,

  258. so I will have no fear. What can mirror people

  259. do to me? Remember your leaders who taught you the

  260. word of God. Think of all the good that has

  261. come from their lives, and follow the example of their faith.

  262. Jesus Christ is the same, yesterday, today, and forever. So

  263. do not be attracted by strange new ideas. Your strength

  264. comes from God's grace, not from rules about food, which

  265. don't help those who follow them. And then he goes on.

  266. He closes out the chapter. But let's wrap up there,

  267. and clearly the promise that we're looking at is don't

  268. love money, be satisfied with what you have, because God

  269. has said I will never fail you, I will never

  270. abandon you.

  271. So the promise is I will never fail you and

  272. I will never abandon you. And the context is, be

  273. satisfied with what you have and don't love money.

  274. So it's this.

  275. Idea that God is with us and God will never

  276. abandon us. And that is true with every context of

  277. our lives if we're a believer and follower of Jesus Christ,

  278. if we're a Christian. But the context today is in

  279. this area of our lives. Right, and then he also

  280. before we get into that, he does he throws some

  281. pretty pretty big bombs out there. Don't forget to show

  282. hospitality to strangers, for some have done this and have

  283. entertained angels without realizing it.

  284. What is that about?

  285. Well, I mean, you know, I told you. I think

  286. most of the people who know me know I have

  287. an angel story that I believe God sent me an angel,

  288. and I have very very little doubt. In fact, I

  289. would say that there's probably nothing in this whole world

  290. that could ever happen to convince the otherwise. Right, and

  291. and and so anyway, I think that the idea that

  292. God Sends Angels is uh, you know you remember that

  293. old show Heaven Can Wait? What's what's what's his name?

  294. John Landon or something? Michael Oh, Michael Landon, Yeah, yeah, yeah,

  295. Heaven can What was it? Was it Heaven? I don't know, No,

  296. Heaven Can Wait? Was Warren Baties movie.

  297. Uh. We didn't have a TV back then, so I

  298. don't know.

  299. It was like a Highway to Heaven, Highoul to Heaven.

  300. I don't know.

  301. Anyway, he's walking on the road with the music. That

  302. was every That was every episode with the guy with

  303. the beard. Anyway, The point is is that, h have

  304. you ever talked to somebody who has like an angel story?

  305. Have you ever?

  306. I mean, besides besides that, have you ever talked to

  307. anybody like this?

  308. I've had people who've wondered, uh yeah, but I haven't

  309. had anybody as emphatic as you. So.

  310. Uh. So there is a good friend of mine. He

  311. he's at my previous church and I can say his

  312. name because he's told this story publicly multiple times. So

  313. Mark Nelson, you know Mark Nelson is sure? Okay, So

  314. Mark has the story and I've heard it multiple times

  315. where I'm gonna I'm gonna tell it, it's unbelievable, Okay.

  316. So he sees a wreck on the side of the

  317. freeway and he stops, and he gets out of his

  318. car and he runs over and there's a lady and

  319. she's bleeding out of her throat right and and it's

  320. just a horrific scene and and and the windows are

  321. crashed and rolled over and things like this. So he

  322. runs over and he says, can I help you? Can

  323. I help you? And then on the other side of

  324. the car, somebody runs up and peeks in and says,

  325. put your hand right here in her throat, and so

  326. he did it, and he goes, no, no, move down,

  327. and he moved down, and he goes, okay, right there,

  328. and he goes, now, pushed as hard as you can.

  329. And Mark's doing this, and of course, I mean we're

  330. talking trauma like er kind of stuff here, right, So

  331. Mark stops this bleeding and and and he said, he goes,

  332. that's right, he goes, just hold it right there. So

  333. then Mark's holding it, and then Mar's asks a question

  334. and then looks up and the person's gone. And within

  335. one second there was a policeman in an ambulance that

  336. had come up. They just both arrived at the same time.

  337. And Mark looks this way and there's no cars and

  338. it's on the side of the road, you know, there's

  339. like woods. And he looks over it this way and

  340. there's an ambulance and police car behind him. And it

  341. was one second ago, and and and he says to

  342. the I don't know who was one of one of

  343. the gentlemen. And he said, where's the other person, where's

  344. the guy who was on the other side of the car.

  345. And both guys go, there's nobody on the side of

  346. the car except for you. And he goes, he was

  347. on the other side of the car. He was on

  348. that side of the window. And he goes, no, there

  349. was nobody there. He goes, we pulled up behind you.

  350. He was there like two seconds ago. And he goes,

  351. we were behind you like for a full minute and

  352. there were's nobody there. And that's his story. And so

  353. you you hear that. And again I'm a skeptic, right,

  354. So I'm like, I'm like, Okay, what's the explanation for that.

  355. There's a homeless guy camping in the woods?

  356. I'm joking, right, but I mean, you know, I mean

  357. it's it's it's just interesting. So Mark, Mark thinks, Oh,

  358. there's no doubt in my mind God sent an angel

  359. to save this woman.

  360. Yeah, you know, I wish the story God also sent Mark.

  361. That's right, that's right.

  362. So yeah, the context here's hospitality.

  363. Yes, of course. Yeah, we were just getting past the

  364. first one. Yeah.

  365. Yeah, So the context is in that one is is

  366. a hospitality thing. And and he says that, you know, take.

  367. Care of strangersality with angels.

  368. Yeah, yeah, take care of strangers. And some people have

  369. have you know, hosted angels unaware and you know, the

  370. Bible mentions Abraham met with angels and at the beginning

  371. didn't realize that Gideon didn't realize who he was talking

  372. to at the beginning. You know, there's Manoah, there's people

  373. in the Bible who met angels or served angels and

  374. then later on discovered you know, who they were. So

  375. there's that, and you know, I just think about it's

  376. just kind of encouragement. What he's trying to do is say, one,

  377. think about your brothers and sisters who are in prison.

  378. Care about them. Then he says, take care of people,

  379. be hospitable if they need a place to stay, even

  380. if all you have as a table in the chair, man,

  381. somebody's gonna be happy to spend time with you and

  382. have a table in the chair, So take care of them.

  383. So he's kind of as he's buttoning up this book,

  384. he's just kind of giving them one off statements about

  385. things that they should be doing. As a Christian, you

  386. should care about people who are suffering, and you should

  387. think of it as if you were suffering or people

  388. that you love suffer, and then be hospitable and take

  389. care of people. And by the way, hey, sometimes people

  390. take care of angels not knowing it. Right then he

  391. moves on down. He just keeps moving along. Give honor

  392. to marriage. That's kind of out of place unless you

  393. just realize he's giving you these one off statements. Oh,

  394. I wanted the comment on this. I wanted the comment

  395. on this. I wanted the that's what he's doing, right.

  396. Have you ever written a letter? Remember back?

  397. I have several times I've written the actual life.

  398. Yeah. Have you ever back in the day when we

  399. used to have to handwrite letters, You'd write and write

  400. and write and write and write, and then towards the

  401. end you're just like, jeez, this just get so long,

  402. and the sentences get shorter. Did you do that? I

  403. did it because my handwriting's not well or not very good,

  404. and then I get tired writing, And so I think

  405. that's what's happening here is this is a pretty intense book.

  406. For twelve chapters. I'm very thorough and then suddenly you

  407. got this last chapter. He's got Listen, man, there's a

  408. million things I want to say. I'm not going to

  409. unpack them. So he says, be hospitable, be concerned about

  410. people who are suffering, honor marriage. Right, none of those

  411. are connected, but it's just there. And then he's encouraging

  412. to be a good Christian. Right, he's saying live. Well, yeah, yeah,

  413. that's what I'm saying. Is I have all these other

  414. things I want to write about, but I'm not going

  415. to write whole chapters on each of these topics, and

  416. so he's just kind of highlighting it. But then he

  417. gets to this, don't love money. Be satisfied with what

  418. you have, for God has said I will never fail you,

  419. I will never abandon you. And then he says, because

  420. of that promise, we can say with confidence the Lord

  421. is my helper, so I will have no fear. What

  422. can here people do to me? And I think that

  423. this is a big issue. I think a lot of

  424. people spend their life. You know, it used to be

  425. everybody spend all of their time planting food, harvesting food,

  426. processing food, prepping food, cooking food, eating food, make babies

  427. go to sleep, wake up in the morning, plant food,

  428. harvest food, process food. You know, prep food, cook food,

  429. eat food. That was you just lived your whole life.

  430. It was just survival and it's all you could think

  431. about is preparing and taking care of yourself and your family. Well,

  432. now most of us aren't suffering and struggling over food,

  433. and yet we still live in a very similar grind

  434. of just more, more, more, more more, and believe it

  435. or not, that turns into this consumerism turns into for

  436. a lot of people worry. It's because we get overextended.

  437. Sometimes we start to worry about it. And so he's saying, man,

  438. when you love money, you're going to struggle with worry.

  439. But if you are content with what you have, if

  440. you're satisfied with what you have, you're going to feel

  441. God's presence. If you're satisfied, you'll feel God's presence because

  442. he promised He'll never leave you, no for sake.

  443. Yeah, I think it's a really powerful thing to attach

  444. the promise I will never fail you, I will never

  445. abandon you to money and provision, right and back then,

  446. of course, you know, just sort of what you said.

  447. Everybody spends all day worrying about the next meal, processing

  448. food and getting water, collecting water. And today we don't

  449. necessarily have that kind of worry, but we worry about

  450. future things. And you know, by the way, I'm only

  451. talking about my bubble and my world.

  452. Yeah, right, you worry about the future financially.

  453. Well, I'm talking about like I just realize what I said.

  454. I just spoke like a spoiled American, right, saying, Oh,

  455. we don't have that kind of worry, But most of

  456. our audience probably don't have that kind of worry. They

  457. turn on the faucet and water.

  458. Comes out right in the west, in the for the West.

  459. And yeah, so I know that a lot of the

  460. world is still there, right, But the idea that God

  461. will never fail you, so I just think that I

  462. don't think that that always means you're always going to

  463. have enough money for everything you want, right, right, And

  464. and sometimes we do go without, and sometimes we are,

  465. you know, challenged, and sometimes we question, and sometimes we

  466. wonder and we thank God. I'm you know, there's so

  467. many people friends of mine who say, I'm not where.

  468. I where all my friends are in life. I should

  469. be here, and now I'm not there, and something's happened

  470. and I lost my job and then I couldn't get one,

  471. and this is this is not you know, this is

  472. not great. But I think that regardless of how our

  473. finances play out, in terms of our future and our

  474. you know, grain that we have stores in our barns,

  475. I think that it's important to understand that God is

  476. always going to be with us. There's not a single

  477. need that God is not aware of. And God will

  478. never fail on his promises. He will always be there

  479. to take care of us, even if sometimes we question

  480. when and how.

  481. Yeah, that verse is a quote, I will never fail you,

  482. I will never abandon you. The author of Hebrews is

  483. quoting the Book of Deuteronomy there right, you.

  484. Know, I was looking for a note in my study

  485. Bible and it quotes the next verse. It says the

  486. next verse comes from Solvient, but I couldn't find Deuteronomy.

  487. Here yes, Deuteronomy thirty one to five.

  488. Huh, yeah, my Bible doesn't say it.

  489. Yeah. So in the In the King James, he says,

  490. I will never I will never leave you. Right, Yeah,

  491. I will never forsake you, is what he says. And

  492. then because of this promise, I will never leave you,

  493. I will never forsake you, I will never fail you,

  494. I'll never abandon you. Because of that promise, then the

  495. author of Hebrews connects us to Psalm one eighteen, where

  496. he says, the Lord is my helper. Not only is

  497. God hanging around you, God's presence is near you. God

  498. is also willing to intervene for you. Right, And the

  499. author of Hebrews is connecting those two ideas. He's present

  500. and he'll intervene. He's not just present and watching. Gee,

  501. I wonder what's going to happen next, But he'll step

  502. in and he'll be your helper. And so because God

  503. will never abandon me, and because God will be my helper,

  504. then I don't have to have any fear. And then

  505. he says, what can mere people do to me? That's

  506. similar to the Book of Romans. You know, who can

  507. be against me? If God's for me who can be

  508. against me? And that should give us a tremendous amount

  509. of confidence. So, hey, if you're struggling financially, listen, God's

  510. not going to fail you. It's never going to be you,

  511. and he will help you. But you have to decide

  512. you're going to be satisfied with what you do have

  513. and stop putting all of your focus on what money

  514. can do for you and instead put your focus on

  515. what God promises to do for you. And then at

  516. that point there's a certain amount of satisfaction that comes

  517. with that decision. And when you come to that place

  518. where you're satisfied with what God has promised, then he says,

  519. I'll be your helper.

  520. And on the negative side, don't love money to such

  521. a degree to where you spend wasted energy and time

  522. and everything else because you're pursuing the wrong thing. Well,

  523. that's great, that's a good place to end. And so

  524. we will see you tomorrow for another promise on the Bible.

  525. Guys,
