  1. You're listening to The Bible Guys, a podcast where a

  2. couple of friends talk about the Bible in fun in

  3. practical ways. Hey guys, thanks for tuning into the Bible Guys.

  4. Whether it's your first time or the first time in

  5. a long time, we're gonna ask that you please take

  6. a moment and share maybe perhaps this link with a

  7. friend or to promote the Bible Guys on social media.

  8. Just help us out.

  9. I'm excited about it. This is gonna be a good

  10. day as you're looking through stuff. Yeah yeah, yeah, yeah, so.

  11. You are Chris.

  12. That had nothing to do with anything, but I'm excited

  13. about it.

  14. Yeah. So I can't quite seem to get my voice

  15. in sync.

  16. You're even raspier than normal.

  17. I don't know why, but anyway, we want to go

  18. ahead and say that we're in the middle of a

  19. series called well, we're talking about the Beatitudes. I'm not

  20. sure we have a title for it. But before we

  21. get to that, we have a segment that really is

  22. this is sort of the first time the desiree has

  23. formulated this segment this way. Yes, we've had this premise,

  24. but not in this way. So she's calling this segment

  25. monkey rich, and she says, Chris will tell a story,

  26. Jeff will interrupt every ten seconds with a random word

  27. that the storyteller must immediately incorporate in the story. Yes,

  28. so we've sort of done something like this, but not this.

  29. What was what did we do last time? That was

  30. like that? How did it go? It was?

  31. I can't remember, but it wasn't this did I?

  32. Yeah, I can't remember. It was I injected things into

  33. your story. I just don't remember how how. But I

  34. like this better because it's like these crazy random words

  35. a sentence yes, yes, yes, and then you had to

  36. finish it. That's it. This is better because it's gonna

  37. go quicker because that was kind of the issue with

  38. the other one. Is it kind of plodded along a

  39. little bit? Okay?

  40. So all right, So did I ever tell you here

  41. comes the story? You ready? So you're still looking at stuff?

  42. I got it?

  43. Okay? Did I ever tell you the time when I

  44. was a little boy, I was walking to the convenience

  45. store and along the way I saw a guy with

  46. a leaf blower in his front yard. But the strange

  47. thing is the squeaky shoes blowing leaves. He was blowing

  48. squeaky shoes, and every time he blew them, they squeaked.

  49. And the closer he got the leaf blower to the

  50. squeaky shoes, the louder the shoes squawked.

  51. Yeah, walkie talkie, And so I.

  52. Thought to myself, that sounds exactly like my dad's walkie talkie,

  53. you know the kind that he has in the back shed.

  54. Holy guacamole.

  55. Every time that I would go in the back shed,

  56. it would be so dirty. I would say, holy guacamole.

  57. And I would look for different things.

  58. And I came across these walkie talkies inflatable kayaks.

  59. And I have to move the inflatable kayaks to the side,

  60. and you know those ducks that they would float in

  61. the water if all this hunting gear. But I would

  62. get to these walky talkies and I would think, to myself,

  63. this sounds just like these inflatable shoes. That's what I

  64. thought in the moment as I was walking my dog

  65. to the convenience store.

  66. You see Grandpa's face Facebook post.

  67. They didn't have Grandpa's fish back in those.

  68. Days, but if he did, I thought.

  69. I did, because as I was walking to the store,

  70. I was actually getting something that my grandpa. My grandpa's

  71. Facebook post talked about he actually posted the.

  72. Fact unsupervised toddlers licorice? Did you say unsupervised toddlers?

  73. He wanted licorice? And so I thought to myself, Okay,

  74. I'm gonna go buy some liquorice because we ran out

  75. because I gave my bag of licorice to a group

  76. of unsupervised toddler. So because he posted about it and

  77. he wanted it, I knew that we ran out. So

  78. I thought to myself, I'm gonna go get it.

  79. Emotional support lama.

  80. So therefore I was turning the corner where this guy was,

  81. you know, blowing leaves, and I came across this pen

  82. and it was filled with believe it or not, emotional

  83. support lamas. Oh wow, where they were just there? So

  84. I stopped to say hi to them, and I realized

  85. that they were very used to people. I was worried

  86. at first they were going to spit on it clip

  87. on tie, but they didn't. And the reason why they

  88. didn't spit on me is because oh she whizz is

  89. because they were trained. But I knew I was passing them,

  90. so I purposefully wore a clip on tie just in case,

  91. because I had they spit on me, I would have

  92. protected my shirt with this car.

  93. I see spaghetti.

  94. But anyway, I walked all the way over to the store,

  95. and as I was getting to the store, I realized

  96. they had a sale on spaghetti newdles. And I thought

  97. to myself, should I buy my licorice or should I

  98. buy the spaghetti noodles? Because you know my mom is Italian, yes,

  99. and she works very hard. And I thought to myself,

  100. I could delight my mom with spaghetti noodles.

  101. Instead suspicious castle.

  102. So I decided to go ahead and buy the spaghetti

  103. noodles instead, knowing that I might disappoint my grandpa because

  104. of his Facebook post. So I brought them home and

  105. I gave them to my mom and in hopes that

  106. she would make my favorite disc spaghetti. But instead I

  107. came home the next day after school, Jeff, and instead

  108. of making spaghetti, I saw this suspicious looking castle role

  109. on the table filled with noodles. I had no idea

  110. what was underneath.

  111. So the moral of the story, the moral.

  112. Of the story is, Jeff, just go ahead and do

  113. the good deed and buy your grandpa what he wants.

  114. Because when you go shopping, just buy what you're wanting

  115. to buy, no matter how many distractions of beaf blowers

  116. and squeaky shoes and lamas, right, just buy what you're

  117. gonna go there for. And it all ended up being

  118. score and good, you know, and mixed.

  119. Up glitter tornado. That's your last one.

  120. I thought I was wrapping up, okay, okay, And I

  121. remember that day very well because that was the day

  122. that a tornado came through the the the barn in

  123. the back. It actually hit the barn and one thing

  124. that my mom was a was a huge craft maker,

  125. you know, she used to knit and make crafts, and

  126. I remember it hit the barn and glitter just got

  127. sucked up in the tornado and it just spread. And

  128. did you know that, for the next two years we

  129. found glitter in the.

  130. Gut, I believe you. Yeah, eactly.

  131. So we refer to that event as the glitter tournail,

  132. which is why I remember every detail of that day.

  133. That's incredible, Chris, Thank you well. You know, I think

  134. it's one of the things our listeners love is having

  135. the opportunity to just learn more about your life and

  136. you know, those kinds of things. Now that glitter tornado

  137. thing gives me nightmares. Yeah, I hate glitter. Yeah, I

  138. hate it. I think it should be outlawed. How do

  139. you think that did? It was really good, Chris. I

  140. enjoyed it.

  141. Yeah, although you threw me some pretty tough.

  142. One tough ones.

  143. Yeah, I was like, wow, that's those are I mean glitter?

  144. Well, Ted GPT helped me out with that because I

  145. was I was struggling this a little bit coming up

  146. with good ideas. But glitter tornado was from h and

  147. spaghetti were from desire.

  148. Oh were they?

  149. Yeah?

  150. All right, well oh she gave you suggestive words, yes,

  151. h huh oh wow, well hey, I think I think

  152. I jump made it make sense.

  153. So you were telling me before we started that you

  154. and your buddy used to make these stories. Yes, like

  155. that right?

  156. You used to be one of my favorite things to do. Uh.

  157. Me and my buddy would sit in biology and we

  158. would like write a sentence and then like start the

  159. next sentence and then fold down the paper so so

  160. they couldn't see the previous sentence and you would have

  161. to just make another sentence based on just a few words,

  162. and then then you would you know, do the same thing,

  163. and we would full, full, full, for full, we do

  164. the whole paper, and then at the end we would

  165. literally unravel it and then read the story. And it

  166. was one big run on sentence, you know, or sometimes

  167. we would you know, start a new sentence, and we

  168. used to cry laughing, and they were just outlandis stories

  169. and we loved it, and it was something that passed

  170. the time. When the teacher was being boring.

  171. I was gonna say, you were doing this not in

  172. English class, you were doing this in biology class. You

  173. were doing a writing exercise in biology.

  174. Just pay attention. So that's good man like biology. And

  175. I certainly didn't like the lady who was teaching biology

  176. at the time. You know, we didn't like her at all.

  177. So the only thing I remember from college biology class

  178. I had. I had a maybe he was a nice man,

  179. but maybe the single most boring voice I've ever heard

  180. in my life. It was a deep voice. He had

  181. been a lawyer before he became a professor, and he

  182. this very deep voice and completely monotone. So he go,

  183. homogeny recapitulates phylogeny. Wow, And that's the only It was

  184. one of the funnies things because I had just complained

  185. about his voice. Bonnie my wife, now, she was my

  186. girlfriend then we were sitting next to each other in

  187. biology class and I had just told her, I said this,

  188. this guy has the most boring voice I ever heard

  189. in my life. And she was laughing about that. And

  190. as soon as I said those words, he goes homogeny

  191. recapitulates phylogyny, and I just lost it. I started laughing,

  192. so I couldn't stop it. Yeah, so I remember that.

  193. That's the only thing I remember from that biology class.

  194. Wow, that's great.

  195. Yep, it was great.

  196. We are moving on to our segment, and she wiz,

  197. I actually I would say this. You know what, it

  198. takes a pure heart to be able to take words

  199. and tell a very clean and innocence.

  200. Does it? Does? It takes well? Good news for you then,

  201. because about Jesus said blessed of the peer and heart,

  202. because they're going to see God's.

  203. Good for me.

  204. Who would have thunk?

  205. Yeah?

  206. Yeah, So here's what Jesus says. We've been doing the

  207. beatitudes in Matthew chapter five, and he gives us whole

  208. list of things of what God promises to bless right

  209. and when he talks about blessing he's talking about, you'll

  210. be happy, you'll be fulfilled, you'll have God's favor on

  211. your life, right, that all these things and so this

  212. one phrase he says, God blesses those whose hearts are pure,

  213. for they will see God. And that's it today, that's

  214. what we're talking about. And it's not really just about

  215. being pure enough to be able to tell a nice story. No,

  216. so we probably should unt pack that.

  217. Well, I mean, you said at the end of my story,

  218. you made a comment and said, we just want to

  219. get to know you better. I thought to myself, what

  220. if somebody tuned in late or fast forwarded the YouTube

  221. or hit fast forward and they actually think that was

  222. a true story or me lying about my childhood.

  223. Yeah, yes, it was so thank goodness, because I mean, yeah,

  224. all those emotional support lamas running around it really would

  225. make the thing confusing for people. So, uh, I just

  226. thought I would jump into this. I looked up the

  227. word pure, right, what does he mean pure in heart? Well,

  228. I was curious because there's a lot of different Greek

  229. words that get translated as pure. So this is Katharo's

  230. is the word, and it means clean, It means unmixed,

  231. and it means undivided. Isn't anything you ever you ever

  232. hear the word cathartic. That was cathartic, and and usually

  233. what that means it kind of cleansed my soul. When

  234. when I did that, it kind of cleansed me clean.

  235. It's it's where we get that word right, And so

  236. it's not just the The general meaning behind katharos isn't

  237. just moral cleanliness. It's right. It's a single hearted devotion

  238. to right.

  239. So a lot of times, like for flips too, when

  240. it says be like minded, yes, and he's talking about

  241. the church not being divided in their thinking right to

  242. be of one accord, you think it's sort of.

  243. That way when when you are dialed in all in

  244. on God and God's ways, you are going to wind

  245. up living a more pure life. You're going to have

  246. a more pure heart.

  247. Divided mind. Would be somebody who lives in the world

  248. and then also lives in God's work, right, Yeah, somebody

  249. who hasn't officially abandoned.

  250. This is why Jesus said you can't serve both God

  251. and money. You need to choose right. This is why

  252. at the very end of this message he preaches in

  253. Matthew Chapter seven. The very end, he goes, Listen, you

  254. have a choice here. You can either build your life

  255. on the sand, or you can build your life on

  256. the rock. Yeah. Right, And and so if you're foolish,

  257. you're just gonna keep building your life on the sand,

  258. and when the storms comes, gonna fall. If you're wise

  259. and you're going to do and you do what I say,

  260. then you will build your life on a rock, and

  261. then when the storms come, it'll stand. And so it's

  262. the same. You can't build on the rock and the sand. Right,

  263. That's what he's really with this whole message. He's kind

  264. of driving a wedge between trying to have your cake

  265. and eat it too, where you want God to answer

  266. all your prayers and to be your good luck charm,

  267. but you want to live like the rest of the

  268. world lives all the time. And Jesus, through the whole message,

  269. is separating that your religion is not checking all the

  270. boxes so you can be right with God. So stop

  271. thinking that. Instead, understand, be single minded, be all in

  272. with God. But when you are, you're going to start

  273. seeing the world from the perspective he sees it, and

  274. you're going to have a different, a different mindset. I

  275. remember I had a friend who watched a documentary about

  276. food and suddenly couldn't go to McDonald's anymore. Well, yeah,

  277. up right, because he had new new information the famous movie.

  278. Yeah yeah, yeah, So he had new information and he's like,

  279. I can never go and he said, you should watch

  280. that movie. I said, I will never watch that documentary.

  281. I don't want to be changed, right, but for him,

  282. But for him, when he adopted the viewpoint of that

  283. filmmaker and he genuinely believed the information he was given

  284. been given, he built a different life. So we always

  285. used to go to McDonald's together. Suddenly he's never going

  286. to McDonald's again. And it changed him. Whereas for me,

  287. I know about it, but I'm not embracing it, right,

  288. And so I stopped McDonald's on the way to work today, right.

  289. And And there is something to that when you really

  290. genuinely believe what God has said and you're aligning with

  291. his principles, it's not that you're still wanting He doesn't

  292. want McDonald's anymore, right, It's not like, oh, dude, you

  293. know what, level love to go get me a big

  294. mac right now? He's like, do you know what a

  295. big mac's gonna do to you? Right? Do you want

  296. a large friend is gonna do to you that? That's

  297. a he's horrified. Yeah, that I would go. And that's

  298. that's what it means to be single minded with God

  299. is once you align with God's thoughts. It's not that

  300. now you're constantly fighting with Oh my gosh, it's so

  301. hard not to keep doing those old things. It's, oh

  302. my gosh, you know what that's gonna do to you?

  303. Right?

  304. Right?

  305. Yeah, that's good. And that's a heck of an introduction.

  306. Before we read the verse.

  307. I did read the verse. I read it twice. Oh

  308. you already read it twice.

  309. Oh, I thought you were referring to it.

  310. I read it twice.

  311. Okay, read it.

  312. But that's okay, let me let me do it again. Yeah,

  313. Blessed are those whose hearts are pure, For they will

  314. see God.

  315. That's three times longer.

  316. That's three times.

  317. That's so funny. So, uh, that's three times.

  318. That's good though. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I'm gonna drive this

  319. one home.

  320. Yeah yeah, well, you know, so when he says for

  321. they will see God, that's a different promise, isn't it? Right?

  322. Because the other ones where they will be satisfied, they

  323. will be comforted. You know, the Kingdom of Heaven is

  324. theirs that it talks about an inheritance, right, But this

  325. one says for they will see God. That's interesting is that. Yeah,

  326. the reward of that of being pure and hard or

  327. like minded or going fully devoted to God's way, will

  328. see God. So I don't literally take it as seeing God,

  329. because we know that the Bible says that no man

  330. can look upon God and live right, right, So Moses

  331. couldn't look upon God.

  332. And some people would say this must mean go to heaven.

  333. But none of these verses mean go to heaven. No,

  334. not a single one of them means go to heaven.

  335. Because you can see God in you know people, you

  336. can see God glorified, right, you can see God through

  337. any Christian so so, but or you can see God

  338. in a way that you haven't seen him before.

  339. Have you ever heard the phrase we don't lose sight

  340. of God because he's hiding from us. We lose sight

  341. of God because our heart gets cloudy. You've ever heard that?

  342. That was I've heard that multiple times. I heard a

  343. whole message preached on that, And that's part of it

  344. is in those moments. Okay, today we woke up and

  345. it was foggy, really foggy. Right, Well, I couldn't see

  346. to the end of my street. Yeah, right, So when

  347. things get cloudy, you can't see very far when and

  348. all that is is water vapor coming in from off

  349. the lake that we live near. Right, the ice is melting,

  350. and so there's all this water vapor, temperature and all

  351. that kind of stuff, and it gets in the way

  352. and it starts a cloud. You can't see normally. I

  353. turned the corner and on the street leading out of

  354. my sub it's a half mile long street, I see

  355. all the way to the end, just about right. And

  356. it's the same thing when you are really clear and

  357. everything is blown out of the way, there's a nice breeze,

  358. everything's blown out of the way, nothing is blocking your view.

  359. You can see and you can see God moving. We

  360. can't see God. It's because we've allowed things to creep

  361. in that make that cloud up our view and we

  362. get distracted. The Book of James says a double minded

  363. man is unstable in all of his ways. Right, This

  364. idea being double minded makes it very difficult for me

  365. to focus on anything. I had a friend, This is funny.

  366. I had a friend that had both of his eyes

  367. went slightly opposite. Did you ever see somebody with one

  368. lazy eye? Yeah, the new Superman, so he had that's true. Uh,

  369. he had two lazy eyes, both of them went slightly

  370. He had these special things that they were. They tried

  371. to fix it, but it was always you were always

  372. trying to figure out as he's looking at me, you know,

  373. and somehow he could see, he could he could see,

  374. but they weren't significant. It wasn't like they were, you know,

  375. opposite directions, but they were just off from each other.

  376. And anytime I think of this, a double minded man

  377. is on the stable waist. If you're looking at two things,

  378. you're not actually focusing on anything, right, And that's what

  379. we want to do. We think we're good multitask and

  380. there's a ton of research on it. We're not good multitaskers. Right.

  381. Everything we do then it winds up being about seventy

  382. percent of our very best that we could do. If

  383. we just focused on one thing, we get way less

  384. done when we're trying to do more things. But when

  385. you have focused I was just talking with one of

  386. our leaders here at Heritage Church. He's on staff. He's

  387. got a big team and a big budget, has a

  388. lot of pressure and a lot of deadlines. And so

  389. I was talking with him that his entire team does

  390. all the work, and I said, I really think what

  391. you need he has two really good leaders. I said,

  392. I think you need to divide it and have one

  393. of your guys paying attention to this group of thoughts

  394. and one of your guys in that team thinking of

  395. this group of thoughts, because what they're doing is they're

  396. going back and forth. I need to work on this

  397. chord progression. I need to make sure that I got

  398. volunteers scheduled. We've got to design this thing. We've got

  399. to get this video out, we've got to write. And

  400. when you're thinking about one hundred things, it's hard to focus.

  401. But when you're thinking, Okay, I've got some volunteers, I've

  402. got chord charts and vocals that I need to arrange.

  403. I need to make sure that we get the songs

  404. in place and that the graphics are right. That's a

  405. very different thing from and I've got to do nine

  406. million other things. And so when you bring focus, you

  407. wind up also accomplishing way more.

  408. So.

  409. This is really what I think this peer and heart

  410. means is when your focus is clear on God, everything

  411. else begins to fall away, and you actually accelerate your

  412. walk with God. You accelerate your growth when you're focused

  413. on just Him. David said keep your eyes straight forward.

  414. Solomon says the same thing, keep your eyes straightforward, don't

  415. look to the right or the left.

  416. Yeah.

  417. Right.

  418. And you know this also aligns with one of the

  419. best and most famous prayers of all time. Do you

  420. remember Ben Stiller and Meet the Parents, But he says, oh,

  421. Lord of Hosts, three things we pray never he goes

  422. to see THEE more clearly, to love THEE more dearly.

  423. Remember I don't remember. It's hilarious.

  424. So anyway, I was just thinking, obviously, yeah, I'd like

  425. to think that.

  426. It is.

  427. It is symbolic of and it's also consistent with all

  428. the different times in the scriptures when it does say

  429. see God right like you'll you'll see God and people

  430. will see God in you. I mean, there's multiple references

  431. of that, and and and seeing God is is sometimes

  432. it's seeing God in a whole different way, right, Like

  433. for instance, remember when Moses you know, stood at the

  434. end of the sea, and they all said, oh, no,

  435. we're gonna die because Pharaoh's armies coming. And he says,

  436. do not panic, right, because Moses saw God in a

  437. way that they hadn't seen God. And then then he

  438. raises his staff. They walk upon dry land, the waters

  439. crashing on the on Pharaoh's army. And then it says,

  440. and then on the other side, then they knew God,

  441. right or or you know, or when Jesus calmed the storms,

  442. it says, they got to the other side, and it says,

  443. and then they said, what manner of man is this?

  444. That that the wind and the waves should even obey him?

  445. They saw God in a different way. But they saw

  446. Jesus in a different way than they than they saw

  447. him before. Right, And so blessed to the pure in heart,

  448. for they will get to know God and to see God,

  449. you know, in a different way. Because isn't it true

  450. that when God asks us to, you know, go a

  451. little bit further, It's like it's like Peter, Hey, Peter,

  452. can you can you step into the boat and then Peter,

  453. can you shove off, you know, shore just a little

  454. bit further? And then hey, Peter, can you throw the

  455. net over the side of the boat. It's like it's like,

  456. the more we step out in faith, the more we

  457. see God. Right, So we trust God in the little

  458. things and we see him come through, so that when

  459. God asks us for the bigger things in life, like,

  460. we're like, ok, I see him in a whole different way.

  461. So I think that I think it could be you

  462. know some So this idea of undivided clear focus is

  463. really at the core of this Catharsos, right, Catharos, which

  464. is where we get the word pure from. So let

  465. me go back to my driving analogy. Have you ever

  466. driven for a long distance and suddenly realize your entire

  467. windshield is just covered in bugs? Yeah? Right, it's just dirty. Yeah,

  468. that's the difference. You can just see farther and clear

  469. when the windshields clean. So I think that's what we're

  470. talking about, is keep our windshield clean right as much

  471. as possible. And and Ben Franklin said, I can't keep

  472. a bird from landing on my head, but I can

  473. keep him from building a nest in my hair, right,

  474. And that's such a great phrase. That's the idea. So

  475. temptation happens distractions happen. Just keep it clean, Just just

  476. clean it off, clean it off. You keep cleaning it off,

  477. and you'll be able to see God. You'll be able

  478. to keep following him and keep drawing closer to Him.

  479. It'll accelerate your spiritual growth. And I think that's what

  480. it means when he says, blessed the pearent heart, because

  481. they'll see God. You're gonna see God moving, you're gonna

  482. see God working, you're gonna see where God's going, and

  483. you're gonna be able to stay close.

  484. Yeah, that's awesome. Well, hey, that's our time, so hopefully

  485. we'll see tomorrow on the Bible guys. Mhm hm h
