  1. Well, if people who know different languages impress you, there

  2. is nothing more impressive than this next story.

  3. So here's Chris and I'm Jeff, and we are the

  4. Daily Bobb guys.

  5. Okay, so today we are doing something fun, I think. Okay,

  6. So here's what I've done about fun. Well, you have

  7. no idea what I'm about to do, no idea? Okay,

  8. here it is. I've pulled up a list on my

  9. phone that has the top ten most common fears, and

  10. I want you to try to name off the top

  11. of your head as many as you think are on

  12. this top ten list, on this one on the top ten.

  13. These are the top ten of the world.

  14. Public speaking.

  15. Oh, hang on, I guess I should have studied these first,

  16. I guess. Yes, public speaking is up there.

  17. Yes, spiders.

  18. Spiders is actually number one. Sneaks snakes is number three,

  19. public speaking was number two.

  20. By the way, Okay, oh, signailed one, two and three. Yes,

  21. what more do you need from me, dude?

  22. Well, come on heights, Yes that's number four.

  23. Speed speed yeah nay. Drowning Nope, no, like water. There's

  24. no water thing in there.

  25. No, not not well, yes, but not in the top ten. Okay,

  26. do you want me just to listen to the rest.

  27. I gave you the top four. Okay, I feel like

  28. that should count it for.

  29. Some crowded spaces or small spaces, believe it or not.

  30. It says the fear of thunder and lightning.

  31. Wow, and then the fear the top ten.

  32. Yes, who's writing this? I don't know. It's called I

  33. don't want I don't I don't want to. I don't

  34. want to even give the website. But it's just it's

  35. it is a website because I.

  36. Don't want to, you know, because everything on the internet

  37. is true.

  38. Yes, fear of germs. And by the way, this one here,

  39. there's a note that it has risen fear.

  40. Of germs moving up.

  41. It's it has moved up into the top ten. Okay,

  42. well you think about that right, yeah. So and then

  43. the fear of being alone?

  44. Oh okay, isn't that terrible?

  45. Yeah, so here's my next question for you real quick.

  46. Yeah, thanks for investing us all.

  47. Yeah, it's not depressing now.

  48. Everybody's waking up. They're just getting them the morning they

  49. listen to the podcast, going oh good, this is gonna

  50. help me today. Oh, that reminds me. I'm terrified of germs.

  51. Well, you know what about people who listen at.

  52. Night for the go to bed, Go to bed fighters?

  53. All right, okay, so here's so here's a question.

  54. I've never listened to this again.

  55. Of the fears that we mentioned, which one are you

  56. most afraid of? Oh?

  57. Man, I just need to pick one. I guess I

  58. think the one. So I'm not afraid of heights, But

  59. the one that I'd become most cautious about is the

  60. higher I go. So I just crossed the bridge, a

  61. hanging bridge in Nepal. Yeah, it's a mile long, one

  62. of those like Indiana Jones hanging ridges. Oh yeah, and

  63. it shook like that. Yeah, and I'm up about I

  64. don't know, two hundred feet and uh. Aster of fact,

  65. we had a seven hundred foot elevation game to get

  66. up and go across this bridge. We were going to

  67. this giant idol of Shiva, and it was that that

  68. turns my stomach right, So I like it. So I

  69. like scary things. Yeah me too, So I like it.

  70. But I found myself hanging on a little tighter thing.

  71. So probably heights. Out of all those that we mentioned,

  72. heights is the one that causes me to pause the moment.

  73. Have you ever jumped out of a plane.

  74. No, I haven't. I wanted to my son. Our plan

  75. always was when he turned eighteen, We're gonna mp out

  76. of a plane. And then the church has a key

  77. man policy on me, and it specifically says I can't

  78. jump out of planes or I avoid the policy.

  79. Oh, she can't do anything like that, so.

  80. I couldn't do it. Yeah, yeah, I wanted to. Pretty soon,

  81. I hope that key man policy goes away and then

  82. I can do it.

  83. Well, nobody cares about me enough, so I jumped out

  84. of a plane, so I'm not important enough to have

  85. a policy.

  86. Yeah. Yeah, Well it's all the church people are just

  87. hoping someday Jeff cashes out so that they can, you know,

  88. get several million dollars and pay off the building. There

  89. you go, there's going to be a day when I'm

  90. worth more dead than alive to the elders the here

  91. Itage Church. That that's gonna happen, but not today, hopefully

  92. not today. So anyways, Hey, that's that was a cool one, man.

  93. Yeahs ten reasons why things that people are afraid of.

  94. So one of the best things you can do is

  95. face your fears. Yes, honestly, and just pushed through it.

  96. Face your fears.

  97. I see what you did there, You turned it.

  98. Yeah, that's right, because most of the time our fears

  99. are are somewhat unreasonable. There there's a little bit of danger,

  100. but the probability of this actually being the thing that

  101. gets you is very, very small. So learning to face them,

  102. I think, is one of the best things you can do.

  103. And the second best thing you can do is google

  104. Bob Newhart Stop It.

  105. Yeah.

  106. Bob Newhart is a counselor. He plays a counselor in

  107. this bit. Yeah yeah, and it's and it's called stop It.

  108. And that's all I'm going to say. And it is

  109. one of the funniest counseling bits I have ever seen

  110. him entire life.

  111. If you ever decide you want to come and counsel

  112. with either me or Chris, you should watch that video

  113. clip first and just realize that's essentially what you're gonna

  114. get from it, right, stop it? So Okay, So we

  115. are continuing in this series on the Book of Acts,

  116. and I love the Book of Acts, and it just

  117. revs up. It takes a little while and then it

  118. starts revving up and going faster and faster with the

  119. spread of the Gospel. So Jesus has resurrected, and we

  120. read that in the end of Book of Matthew he

  121. gives them the great commission go make disciples. He tells them,

  122. I'm going to fill you with the Holy Spirit, and

  123. then you're going to go to Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, the

  124. uttermost parts of the world. And then they pray because

  125. they're not sure what's suposed to happen. Next they go

  126. in the upper room. Every problems of her problem they're praying.

  127. And then now this is the result of this a

  128. few days later. So all these first three days we've

  129. read are just a few days apart. Right, So here

  130. we go. We're gonna read the first like sixteen verses,

  131. and then we're going to jump to the end of

  132. the chapter. Because Peter preaches a long message. He's long winded,

  133. like you are, Chris. So on the day of Pentecost,

  134. all the believers were meeting together in one place. Suddenly

  135. there was a sound from heaven like the roaring of

  136. a mighty windstorm, and it filled the house where they

  137. were sitting. Then what looked like flames or tongues of

  138. fire appeared and settled on each of them, and everyone

  139. present was filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking

  140. in other languages as the Holy Spirit gave them this ability.

  141. At that time, there were devout Jews from every nation

  142. living in Jerusalem. When they heard the loud noise, everyone

  143. came running, and they were bewildered to hear their own

  144. languages being spoken by the believers. They were completely amazed.

  145. How can this be, they exclaimed, These people are all

  146. from Galilee, and yet we hear them speaking in our

  147. own native languages. Here we are Parthians, Medes, Elamites, people

  148. from Mesopotamia, Judea, Capaducia, Pontius, the province of Asia, Phrygia, Pamphilia, Egypt,

  149. and the areas of Libya around Syene, visitors from Rome,

  150. both Jews and converts to Judaism, Cretans and Arabs, and

  151. we all hear these people speaking in our own languages

  152. about the wonderful things God has done. And they stood

  153. there amazed and perplexed. What can this mean? They asked

  154. each other, But others in the crowd ridiculed them, saying

  155. they're just drunk, that's all. Then Peter stepped forward with

  156. the eleven other apostles and shouted to the crowd, listen carefully,

  157. all of you, fellow Jews and residence of Jerusalem. Make

  158. no mistake about this. These people are not drunk, as

  159. some of you are, assuming nine o'clock in the morning

  160. is much too early for that. Know what you see

  161. was predicted long ago by the prophet Joel. Then he

  162. preaches this whole message about how God had promised the

  163. Holy Spirit would come. Then he talked about Jesus dying

  164. and resurrecting, and then it comes down to in verse

  165. thirty six. So let everyone in Israel know for certain

  166. that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, to

  167. be both Lord and Messiah. Peter's words pierced their hearts,

  168. and they said to him and to the other apostles, brothers,

  169. what should we do? And Peter replied, each of you

  170. must repent of your sins and turn to God and

  171. be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the

  172. forgiveness of your sins, and then you receive the gift

  173. of the Holy Spirit. This promise is to you, to

  174. your children, and to those far away, all who've been

  175. called by the Lord our God. Then Peter continued to

  176. preach for a long time, strongly urging all his listeners

  177. save yourselves from this crooked generation. And those who believed

  178. what Peter said were baptized and added to the church

  179. that day, about three thousand in all. And then here's

  180. the descriptor of their very first church, which I love.

  181. I want to be just like this as a church.

  182. All the believers devoted themselves to the apostles teaching and

  183. to fellowship, and to sharing and meals, including the Lord's Supper,

  184. and to prayer. A deep sense of awe came over

  185. all of them, and the apostles performed many miraculous signs

  186. and wonders, and all the believers met together in one

  187. place and shared everything they had. They sold their property

  188. and possessions and shared the money with those in need.

  189. They worshiped together at the temple. Each day they met

  190. in homes for the Lord's Supper, shared their meals with

  191. great joy and generosity, all the while praising God and

  192. enjoying the good will of all the people. And each

  193. day the Lord added to their fellowship those who were

  194. being saved. Wow, yeah, definitely, Well that's the goal.

  195. Well, it's it's definitely the mentality, the sentiment, right, the

  196. attitude I'm not sure about selling everything I have and

  197. then throwing it all into the middle.

  198. Well, it's because you're not a good Christian you love

  199. things rather than.

  200. So all the multi millionaires so have they throw in

  201. the middle.

  202. It's not a command, no, I know, it's just that

  203. they loved each other so much that they were willing.

  204. To Yeah, I know, yeah, so yeah, but but yeah.

  205. They're a little bit of a legalist, and so when

  206. you read the Bible, you tend to read every word

  207. as a command to you rather than no. And this

  208. is what happens. When the spirit really impacts me by

  209. the way he's making my spirit comes on you, then

  210. you probably will.

  211. But okay, anybody who knows me knows I'm the opposite

  212. of a legalist for certain. But yeah, I love the

  213. fact that people loved each other so much that they

  214. took care of each other. And so the sentiment behind

  215. that is is that if somebody is in the church

  216. and they're hurting, that we should be able to be

  217. so close and so tight knit and and you know,

  218. be a part of their lives in such a way

  219. to where we help them.

  220. Right, and there are always people in a church who's hurting. Yeah, right,

  221. so it would be I think the point here is

  222. that they were sacrificial right right there. They were willing

  223. to sacrifice for their brothers and sisters in Christ. That

  224. was it. And by the way, it's three thousand of

  225. them at that point, right right. It was just this

  226. overwhelming thing. The other part of it was immediately when

  227. you converted to this because Christianity was just a sacked.

  228. It was a for most people, they thought it as

  229. a cult, and so they lost their homes a lot

  230. of times, they'd lose their jobs, they'd lose a lot

  231. of their their their ability to make money, income, and

  232. so there's this kind of a crisis that's happening right there.

  233. And you know, those who had resources were willing to

  234. sacrifice the resources for those who were losing resources because

  235. of the kingdom.

  236. Yeah. Yeah, So let's go back to the very beginning

  237. where it says the tongues of fire came down, So

  238. obviously there is experience was unlike ours today. They had

  239. this quite literal and physical experience of visually seeing flames

  240. come down and set upon each person, and they experience

  241. this very unique introduction in their lives by hearing other languages.

  242. So imagine if I'm speaking a language and then people

  243. have five different languages walking in. All five of those

  244. people here hear me in their own native tongue. That

  245. is what it's describing. And it is just an unbelievable miracle,

  246. is what it is. And so it's just like God

  247. to you know, introduce the Holy Spirit with this unbelievable, unexplainable,

  248. miraculous experience where where those who are you know, in

  249. act chapter two are not going to doubt it anymore,

  250. right like, because after all, you know, we receive the

  251. Holy Spirit and it may take us a little time

  252. to realize, Wow, this is beyond coincidence. You know, this

  253. is this is God working in my life. I sense,

  254. I experience, I feel the power of God in me.

  255. It made up. But they needed convinced because they didn't

  256. have any history of the Holy Spirit, right right, So

  257. God introduces the Holy Spirit to this group of people

  258. and to us with this unbelievable, miraculous, you know, out

  259. of this world kind of experience.

  260. Well, it's no secret I love the Life application study Bible.

  261. If you don't have one, get one. You can get

  262. them on an Amazon for like thirty dollars or thirty

  263. five dollars in hardback, and I just love it. I

  264. have several of them. But the notes here, there's two

  265. notes for verses three and four. It says this was

  266. a fulfillment talking about the fire, the earthquake, all that

  267. kind of stuff. This was a fulfillment of John the

  268. Baptist words about the Holy spirits baptizing with fire, and

  269. of the prophet Joel's words about the outpouring of the

  270. Holy Spirit. So this moment was a fulfillment of prophecy. Right.

  271. It wasn't a declaration that this is the way it

  272. has to happen all the time. This is what was

  273. prophesied was going to happen the first time, right, Right,

  274. And then it says why tongues of fire. Fire symbolizes

  275. God's purifying presence, which burns away the undesirable elements of

  276. our lives and sets our hearts aflame to ignite the

  277. lives of others. Right. And then at Pentecost, God confirmed

  278. the validity or Holy Spirit's ministry by sending fire, just

  279. like he sent fire for Elijah, just on Mount Carmel,

  280. just like he sent fire with Moses, with the Ten commandments,

  281. all these kinds of things. And then the next note says,

  282. God made his presence known to this group of believers

  283. in a spectacular way, roaring wind, fire, and his Holy Spirit.

  284. Would you like God to reveal himself to you in

  285. such recognizable ways. He may do so, but be wary

  286. of forcing your expectations on God. And then it talks

  287. about Elijah also needed a message from God in One

  288. Kings chapter nineteen. First came to great wind, then an earthquake,

  289. and finally a fire. But in that instance, God's message

  290. came in a gentle whisper. So God may use dramatic

  291. methods to work in your life, or he may speak

  292. in gentle whispers. Wait patiently and always listen. So God's

  293. not bound by a circumstance, or we can't require him

  294. to do a thing or another thing. God most of

  295. the time speaks in gentle whispers. Sometimes he does something dramatic,

  296. but most of the time it's that gentle whisper. Yeah,

  297. so he says and psalms, be still and know that

  298. I'm got That's great.

  299. So that's really what the what is the what happened,

  300. and it's and it was prophesied. The why did God

  301. choose to do something like this? I find it very

  302. interesting the notes in chapter two, verses nine through eleven

  303. in my study Bible as well, and it says, why

  304. were all these places mentioned? You know, all the different lands, right,

  305. there's a list of many lands from which the Jews

  306. had come to the festival in Jerusalem. These Jews were

  307. not from Palestine because their ancestors had been dispersed to

  308. other parts of the world to the captivities and persecutions,

  309. and very likely some Jews, some of the Jews who

  310. responded to Peter's message returned to their homelands with God's

  311. good news of salvation. And here's sort of the point.

  312. It says, thus God prepared the way for the the

  313. spread of the good news. And as you read the

  314. Book of Acts, you will see how that way was

  315. often prepared for Paul and other messengers by people who

  316. had become believers at Pentecost. So think about this, So

  317. the world, you know, Jesus came at the perfect time.

  318. Jesus came at the time you know. In fact, the

  319. Book of Glatian says when such a time had come right.

  320. It said when the perfect when the perfect time had come.

  321. You know, I forget the King James phrase that I'm

  322. thinking of, but anyway, but that's what it means. It

  323. means when the perfect time had come, Jesus came into

  324. the world. God sent his son. So for all the

  325. times you know in past history, you know in future history,

  326. God chose for Jesus to come down. And the world

  327. was perfectly prepared for the Gospel to spread. Number one,

  328. we know that Romans had developed a system where they

  329. conquered the world, and even the roads that led and

  330. united the different cities. It was perfectly a positioned for

  331. the Gospel to have spread easily.

  332. Not only that that was a fairly new technology. Yes,

  333. those well built roads, Yes, was kind of a new thing.

  334. Yeah. And then also Greek. Everybody spoke the Greek. There

  335. was one language. It was the business language, which means

  336. that everybody could talk with everybody of a different language

  337. because they all knew Greek. Well, here's sort of what

  338. this passage is saying. It's saying those who were present

  339. at the festival heard everything in their native language, and

  340. they would have gone home. And it was for the

  341. purpose of spreading the Gospel and spreading the news of

  342. this Christian movement that God is starting. So think about

  343. what better way to kickstart, you know, the spreading of

  344. the news than to have this great experience. And by

  345. the way, it's in everybody's language, which says everybody understands.

  346. It's so brilliant. God is so strategic. Sometimes we miss

  347. out on how God is playing. We're in life, we're

  348. playing checkers. You know what God should do? He should

  349. do this, he should do that. And God's always playing

  350. like multi level chests, right right, like from Star Trek.

  351. Yeah, multi level Chess. I am so pleased that you

  352. just throughout that reference.

  353. Yeah, it warms my heart that you talked to Trachy. Yeah,

  354. a little bit wife is too.

  355. That's great.

  356. But so in this it was incredibly strategic that Jesus

  357. died at Passover, probably because of the prophecies of it,

  358. but it also really highlights for those Jews that were

  359. looking for the answer. Jesus is the lamb of God

  360. who takes away the sins of the world, so that

  361. was important. Forty days later is the Pentecost, the Feast

  362. of Pentecost, and that's another kind of big festival. So

  363. it wasn't uncommon in those days that people would make

  364. a pilgrimage to Jerusalem. Jews that were dispersed all around

  365. the world make a pilgrimage to Jerusalem and stay from

  366. Passover to Pentecost right during that time. So all of

  367. the word about Jesus dying in this resurrection, the rumors

  368. are spreading, all this stuff is happening, and then the

  369. Holy Spirit comes only forty days later. You gotta imagine

  370. if it take you a month and a half or

  371. two months to get there. You know, they're not flying

  372. on planes, so they're riding in boats and riding on

  373. donkeys and walking, so take a couple months to get there.

  374. You'd stay a month or two and then take another

  375. month to go home. So these people are from all

  376. around the world, and God chose then on that day

  377. to be able to spread the gospel through the whole

  378. almost the entire Roman Empire at the time, all on

  379. this one day, because they're all the step up and

  380. preach the gospel. So this is the first time that

  381. the idea of tongues is introduced in the Bible. And

  382. this version of tongues is very clearly the supernatural ability

  383. to communicate the Gospel in known languages, even though it's

  384. said here these people are just Galileans. They thought of

  385. Galileans as being the most uneducated people in Israel.

  386. Right, They just the blue collar work right.

  387. Right, Well, they're thinking of it as the hillbilities of Israel. Right.

  388. That's kind of the how they treated them. It's how

  389. they treated Peter. It's how they later on are going

  390. to treat Peter and John later as you guys are

  391. unlearned men from Galilee. What in the world? And here

  392. they are again, they're amazed. These guys aren't educated. They

  393. didn't go out and learn all these languages, but they're speaking.

  394. And so it's interesting they while almost everybody could have

  395. done business in Greek, that wasn't their heart language. Their

  396. heart language was Parthian or Mead or Elamite or right that.

  397. So God made sure that with this gospel, the Gospel

  398. was not presented on a business level. It was presented

  399. in a heart language kind of way. And that's why

  400. he decided to have them all be able to speak

  401. this way. So that's really powerful. And then after Peter

  402. gets up and preaches, it just rocks their world. He says,

  403. you need to repent of your sins, turn to Christ,

  404. be baptized, and they do three thousand people. It goes

  405. from one hundred and twenty to three thousand, just like that.

  406. And then you see this incredible picture of the local

  407. church where they're sharing what they have. They're praying together,

  408. they're sharing meals together, they're worshiping together, they're sharing the

  409. Gospel together. And I love in verse forty seven says

  410. all while praising God and enjoying the good will of

  411. all the people. I want to ask our listeners today,

  412. how hard do you work for the good will of

  413. the people in your life as opposed to typing in

  414. all caps on social media or whatever. Right? And then

  415. each day the Lord added to their fellowship. Those were

  416. being saved, so they weren't trying to figure out how

  417. to grow their church. They were just being the church

  418. and God did the growing. Yeah.

  419. That's great. Yeah, By the way, I have to I

  420. can't zoom past this. Growing up in the bar business,

  421. my family owned a bar. This is the verse where

  422. it tells us, if you're wondering when is too early

  423. to get drunk? Nine am is definitely too early, because

  424. he says he's number one, they're not drunk, and number

  425. number two it's also nine in the morning. That's right,

  426. So I can't I got to mention that that's right, can't.

  427. Well, back then too, their their their wine wasn't as

  428. powerful as ours. Right, So so natural fermentation doesn't go

  429. to the level of alcohol that that we currently do,

  430. or we enhance our fermentation process. The drink a lot

  431. of So buddy, you'd have to be drinking a lot

  432. to be drunk down black.

  433. It's like those you know whatever.

  434. So you know, somebody just took notes, Oh, I shouldn't

  435. be drunk at nine in the morning. Great, well not

  436. at all.

  437. Well, I'll tell you what. In the end, we see

  438. that the churches, you know, it's moving forward. The gospel

  439. is being spread. People are being added to the church

  440. every day, and more importantly, the church is being the church.

  441. Just like you said. They weren't trying to you know,

  442. here's our massive goal. No, they were just being the

  443. church with each other. And you know what, here's a

  444. message that's compelling to people. Yes, And one of the

  445. reasons why the church grows is because it's attractive. So

  446. the church is supposed to be attractive. It's supposed to

  447. be irresistible. And when the church is functioning on all cylinders,

  448. When it's operating on all cylinders, it's supposed to be

  449. the closest thing to Heaven this side of eternity. And

  450. the church is run by imperfect people. We have bad

  451. church experiences, but there are so many times where the

  452. church functions in a sweet spot. And there's so many

  453. times where when you get a dose of the good.

  454. You know, it's like eating chicken. My professor used to

  455. tell us you spit out the bones, right, you eat

  456. the chicken. And he used to say, but oh that

  457. chicken right. He used to see it all the time.

  458. Eli harre you. He's passed now, so's it. But I

  459. know we're coming up on the at the end of
