  1. Hey, everybody, we're the Bibble guys, and if you're just

  2. tuning in recently, just know that we are showing a

  3. little bit of reruns for a few months, and then

  4. we'll be back bigger and better than ever on August

  5. thirty first, because behind the scenes, we're taking a hiatus

  6. to do some very important things.

  7. Yeah, we're building building out a new studio and we've

  8. got some new structure. Super excited about it. So August

  9. thirty first, brand new content. But in the meantime, enjoy

  10. some of our greatest hits.

  11. So today we're talking about the apostle Peter calling a

  12. bunch of people a bunch of names.

  13. Wow.

  14. So he's Chris, I'm Jeff, and we're the Dayta Bible guys.

  15. So listen, here's what we want to do today. We

  16. would love to invite our listeners, huh, to be a

  17. part of what we're calling a mail bag segment.

  18. Mail bag segment, although not we're going to read mail

  19. from our listener.

  20. Yeah, but from our listener the one. But we don't

  21. want physical mails, right, This isn't from the nineteen eighties,

  22. this is this would be email, right, So the email

  23. is going to be listed right here on the screen

  24. and it's info at bibbleayes dot com.

  25. That's right.

  26. And so when you email in and here's what we

  27. want you to do. We want you to ask us

  28. about us. So this is more like I get to

  29. know you kind of a thing.

  30. So in the past, the enigma that is Chris Tarba. Yes,

  31. if you just start peeling back the laber.

  32. If anybody cares about such things.

  33. Wow, but it's your mom and my mom. There's the

  34. two listeners.

  35. Well, here was the idea behind the brainstorm behind these

  36. meetings is that in the past we started off podcasts

  37. just by asking each other random questions.

  38. Yeah, that was the fun.

  39. Yeah, that was just goofy. So the question is this,

  40. if you if someone else could ask a question, what

  41. would they ask? Oh yeah, right, or what would they

  42. want to know? So I'll give you an example.

  43. So you look up to well, I mean people, yeah.

  44. Yeah, so somebody I don't know. Let's just take that

  45. somebody I don't know. So I was thinking about this.

  46. I was thinking about Aerosmith Steven Tyler. One of the

  47. things that I would ask him is about his voice.

  48. Did you know that the very popular and most popular

  49. song they sing dream on right. Did you know that

  50. was the very first time that Steven Tyler used his

  51. high voice ever, And everybody told him, well, according to

  52. his interviews, is that everybody told him that don't use

  53. that voice. It wasn't didn't It didn't sound like his

  54. normal voice. So that's why at the beginning of the

  55. song he actually sings pretty low register. If you listen

  56. to all his recent hits, he stays up in that

  57. speech kind of a thing. Well, that's the reason why

  58. that song sounds so different. When he starts, he starts

  59. in low register. Then he went up and he used

  60. it and became such a hit. It became his sort

  61. of trait, his sgnature. And he lived in that well,

  62. so and saw him in concert. And this guy's at

  63. the Palace in Detroit, and he was probably sixty six

  64. years old.

  65. Wow.

  66. And I was actually with a friend of mine, Brian

  67. bell Knapp, who had like front row center tickets, kid

  68. you not, And so he was literally standing right next

  69. to me as close as you are to me.

  70. We're sorry for saying your name, Brian. We don't know

  71. if you want to be associated with Chris or not, but.

  72. Yes he does. Yeah, he's my good friend.

  73. Okay, So anyway, you do that all the time, you

  74. say people's names. I'm like, I hope they don't mind

  75. was saying their names.

  76. Yeah, well I know Brian, So anyway I know people too.

  77. Go ahead.

  78. In other words, he's not gonna mind. So anyway, Steven

  79. Tyler is as close to me as you are, and

  80. he's singing dream On and he has his microphone look

  81. in his handheld, yeah, giving him a rose. He had

  82. a huge microphone stand right, ok, like scarves on it,

  83. and he's singing dream On and he's holding it out

  84. like this out of the stage and it's literally right

  85. above me. So I'm looking up and he's But here's

  86. my point. My point is he's sixty six and he

  87. still hits every single note. So one of the things

  88. I would ask him, what is your voice? What is

  89. your what is your training? What's your regimen? What are

  90. your rules? How do you do that right? Because I'm

  91. very concerned about my voice sometimes I don't, you know,

  92. treat it well, my vocal courts, and so I would

  93. ask him that.

  94. Well, okay, so if you are thinking Chris Starbaugh is

  95. a lot like Stephen Tyler, and you want to learn

  96. everything you can learn about how connect those like Tyler?

  97. Like wants to learn about Tyler, then send an email

  98. to info at the Bible guys dot com.

  99. That's not what I meant And yeah, yeah.

  100. Yeah, So you just want to learn interesting things about

  101. Chris Arbo?

  102. So, right, what would you ask to somebody? Oh?

  103. You know what, I so, I'm terrible at that. I

  104. don't really think through those kinds of questions very often.

  105. But I was with a guy here recently who has

  106. established like fourteen different ETFs and uh, you know, he

  107. struck the gavel like seven times at the Dow Jones thing.

  108. Really great investor, been very successful investing, and I just

  109. couldn't get enough of asking questions and talking to him

  110. about investing and stuff like that. I'm not good at it.

  111. I'm not you know, I'm not an expert investor. But

  112. I'm just very intrigued by the kind of courage and

  113. the strategy behind that. So I asked him a bunch

  114. of questions that it was really interesting. So I was

  115. just interested into finding out how does he do what

  116. he does right? And I think that's what you're asking, right,

  117. is send in funny questions. Anything funny questions, fun questions, Hey,

  118. why do you do this?

  119. How do you think about this?

  120. Or could it be serious as well?

  121. Yeah?

  122. Yeah, and mail bag kind of questions. So we already

  123. have the stump the pastor serious Bible questions, so this

  124. would be different from that. Right, So, if you want

  125. to do the stump the pastor, send in in your

  126. in your the subject the subject line stump the pastor,

  127. and that would be like a tough by question. But

  128. if you just wanted to ask a fun, goofy question,

  129. ask a mailbags question.

  130. Yeah, in the subject we get to know your question. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

  131. So we took a long time on that, but just

  132. kind of establish it. We'd like to have this be

  133. a segment, So send it to us. Send us those

  134. things and I think it'll be fun. Take the time.

  135. Okay.

  136. So we are in Acts chapter four, and this is

  137. a continuation of the previous story where Peter and John

  138. heal this guy that has been crippled for a long

  139. time and then there's a big crowd and so they

  140. get up and they begin to preach the gospel during

  141. this crowd. So then in verse in chapter four, the

  142. authorities get involved with this, going, Hey, this shouldn't be

  143. going on. So here's where we are. In verse one,

  144. we're reading from the New Living Translation. It says while

  145. Peter and John were speaking to the people, they were

  146. confronted by the priests, the captain of the Temple Guard,

  147. and some of the Sadducees. These leaders were very disturbed

  148. that Peter and John were teaching the people that through

  149. Jesus there is a resurrection of the dead. Sadducees didn't

  150. believe in the resurrection.

  151. So you joke.

  152. Yeah, they were sad.

  153. You see, that's why they were sad.

  154. You see, that's right.

  155. So it's very good.

  156. Remember I said, I said, you knew a lot of

  157. lame jokes. They arrested them and since it was already evening,

  158. put them in jail until morning. But many of the

  159. people who had heard their message believed it. So the

  160. number of men who believe now totaled about five thousand.

  161. The next day, the council of all the rulers and

  162. elders and teachers of religious law met in Jerusalem. Annes,

  163. the High Priest, was there, along with Caiaphas, John Alexander,

  164. and other relatives of the high priests. They brought in

  165. the two disciples and demanded, by what power or in

  166. whose name have you done this? Then Peter, filled with

  167. the Holy Spirit, said to them, rulers and elders of

  168. our people, are we being questioned today because we've done

  169. a good deed for a crippled man? Do you want

  170. to know how he was healed? Let me clearly state

  171. to all of you, into all the people of Israel,

  172. that was healed by the powerful name of Jesus Christ

  173. the Nazarene, the man you crucified, but whom God raised

  174. from the dead. For Jesus is the one referred to

  175. in the scriptures where it says the stone that you

  176. builders rejected has now become the cornerstone. And he makes

  177. a very clear statement. He said, there is salvation in

  178. no one else. God has given no other name under

  179. heaven by which we must be saved for now. The

  180. members of the council were amazed when they saw the

  181. boldness of Peter and John, for they could see that

  182. they were ordinary men with no special training in the scriptures.

  183. They also recognized them as men who had been with Jesus.

  184. But since they could see the man who had been

  185. healed standing right there among them, there was nothing the

  186. council could say, so they ordered Peter and John out

  187. of the council chamber and conferred among themselves. What should

  188. we do with these men, they asked each other. We

  189. can't deny that they've performed a miraculous sign, and everybody

  190. in Jerusalem knows about it. But to keep them from

  191. spreading their propaganda any further, we must warn them not

  192. to speak to anyone in Jesus name again. So they

  193. called the apostles back in and commanded them never again

  194. to speak or teach in the name of Jesus. But

  195. Peter and John replied, do you think God wants us

  196. to obey you rather than him? Cannot stop telling about

  197. everything we've seen and heard. The council then threatened them further,

  198. but they finally let them go because they didn't know

  199. how to punish them without starting a riot, for everyone

  200. was praising God for this miraculous sign, the healing of

  201. a man who'd been laying for more than forty years.

  202. You know, I think this story fits my personality. Yeah,

  203. it does every time that I hear this story. And

  204. by the way, we covered this way back in February.

  205. That was a very long time ago. But every time

  206. I hear this story, I get rebbed up, I get

  207. charged up. It makes me want to charge all the

  208. square gun. It makes me want to Like, as long

  209. as i know that I'm doing what's right and I'm

  210. standing up for what is right, then I'm not afraid

  211. to say anything. And you know, listen, I've been through

  212. my series of events, even in the last couple of years,

  213. where I've said some very tough things to some people

  214. who you know, had leverage over me, and I was

  215. never afraid to say them, which is part of my problem. Yeah,

  216. well there is that, But if you know it's right

  217. and you do it in a way that is like

  218. obviously here Peter is just being bold. He's not being disrespectful, right,

  219. So he's not being he's not he's not he's didn't

  220. call them a bunch of names or anything. What he's

  221. really doing is is he's saying, hey, listen, we're not careful,

  222. we're not going to calculate our answers, we're not going

  223. to fear you politically, even though this were probably some

  224. of the same council members that put Jesus to death, right,

  225. so now he's looking at them from the same thing

  226. about this from the same people that Peter ran from.

  227. You know, just when Jesus was crucified just a few

  228. chapters ago. In terms of timeline, right.

  229. Now, he's looking at them directly.

  230. Months later, months later, it's a few months.

  231. He's caught in their crosshairs. Now it's him, but after

  232. everything he's experienced, these.

  233. Guys could get Jesus killed. They can certainly get Peter killed.

  234. Yes, And so he looks at them and says, we're

  235. not even careful. Let me. I love it because he

  236. says this, let me be clear, I'm gonna speak slow

  237. so all of you can understand what I'm about to say.

  238. I'm gonna enunciate.

  239. And then when they threaten him further, then he says,

  240. do you actually think that God wants us to obey

  241. you rather than him? We're not going to do it.

  242. So just before you let us go, I'm announcing to

  243. you we're not going to do it. It's amazing to me.

  244. Well, let's say set the stage here.

  245. So it says that while they're preaching there, they're preaching

  246. that message that we talked about yesterday. While they're preaching

  247. this message, they're confronted by the priests. These would have

  248. been probably these priests would have been probably relatives of

  249. the high priest. That's that's how that all worked anyways.

  250. And then the captain of the Temple guard, the captain

  251. of the Temple guard would have been the most powerful

  252. military quasi military guy engaged with the priests and the Pharisees,

  253. the Saducees, and then it was also the Sadducees. So

  254. the Sadducees, you remember, there were two different sects. There

  255. were the Pharisees, and the Pharisees were very religious and

  256. very wholly acting in their life. The Sadducees were very secular,

  257. very worldly, very Romanesque in the way that they live

  258. their lives. And they were the ones who had compromised

  259. and stood to gain financially from the Roman government by

  260. cooperating with them. So they had They were a small group,

  261. but they were very powerful, and they didn't believe in

  262. the resurrection. So it's incredibly embarrassing that they were part

  263. of getting Jesus killed. They knew he resurrected from the dead,

  264. they just didn't believe in it. It wasn't part of their system.

  265. And so it's this group that goes, hey, you can't

  266. talk about the resurrection. If they were just talking about Jesus,

  267. they wouldn't have cared. But they're talking about we saw

  268. him rise from the dead. That's what was in chapter three.

  269. And so now they're coming back going, whoa, dial it

  270. back here, guys, you're teaching some other god other than

  271. the Roman gods, and you're teaching this resurrection idea. You

  272. can't do that anymore, and so he goes. So when

  273. they're confronting them, Peter goes, are we in trouble for

  274. doing a good thing? Is that we hear guys?

  275. Right?

  276. Which is such a cool way to confront them. Are

  277. we here because we healed a crippled guy? Is that

  278. the issue? Of course, that's not the issue. What you're

  279. wanting to know is how did we do it?

  280. Well?

  281. Let me be as clear as I can. It was

  282. the mighty power, the name of Jesus Christ.

  283. That's right.

  284. Yeah.

  285. Yeah. So the great thing is here is that it

  286. indicates that the reason why they let them go is

  287. because there was power in the people. Yeah, And it

  288. says they didn't know how to punish them without causing

  289. a riot. Right, And so if you think about it,

  290. the irony of Peter and John not wanting to play

  291. politics at all, right, and and ye, at the same time,

  292. the reason why they were let go is because the

  293. council were now the ones behind the politics. They're the

  294. ones afraid of the politics.

  295. Right.

  296. So I think it's just really ironic and almost like

  297. a sense of like the tides have turned because Jesus

  298. has risen from the grave and all of a sudden,

  299. now the power is sort of given back to Peter

  300. and John in this moment. Any I think it's very cool.

  301. So they say, he's the man that you crucified, but

  302. God raised from the dead. So they keep driving this

  303. even though they're being told not to talk about it.

  304. They drive that issue in verse ten, and then by

  305. verse twelve he says there is salvation.

  306. And no one else.

  307. God has given no other name under heaven by which

  308. we must be saved for a lot of people. That

  309. seems really narrow minded, right, But this comes from and

  310. he's only just quoting Jesus from John chapter fourteen, verse six.

  311. For Jesus, I'm the way the truth in life. No

  312. one comes to the Father. I am the way, the

  313. truth and the life. No one comes to the Father

  314. except through me, right and he now Peter is essentially

  315. saying the same thing. Jesus is the only way. And

  316. for a lot of people who want to be, you know,

  317. very open minded, they would say that's a very close

  318. minded thing. But Christianity didn't establish this. Peter wasn't the

  319. one who establishes. Jesus is the one who declared it.

  320. So either Jesus is who he says he is or

  321. he's not right. But Jesus said I'm the only way, which,

  322. by the way, there's another time when Jesus said broad

  323. is the way to Hell, narrow is the gate to Heaven, right, right,

  324. And what he's saying is He's the only way.

  325. Yeah. So I think I said this with Wesley back

  326. when we did podcasts the other week with him, but

  327. I took this actually from Andy Stanley. He says that

  328. people think that Christianity is narrow minded, but when you

  329. consider all of the other world religions, he said, Christianity

  330. is the is the only world religion that can claim

  331. these three things. Number One, everyone is invited. That's not

  332. the case with a lot of other world religions. Right.

  333. Number Two, everyone can meet the requirements everyone and then

  334. number three, everyone gets in the exact same way. So

  335. it's not based on performance, it's not based on anything else.

  336. So no other religion and system that you can find

  337. anywhere else that people buy into can claim those three things.

  338. So in that sense, it is the most inviting and

  339. inclusive not exclusive invitation of all time. Yeah, so everyone's invited,

  340. everyone can meet the requirements. Everyone gets in the exact

  341. same way.

  342. I was just at the second one of the holiest

  343. I think they claim it to be the second holiest

  344. Hindu temple in the world in Katmandu, and there was

  345. a place where we from that point on, since we

  346. weren't Hindus, we weren't.

  347. Allowed to go into. Right it was isolated.

  348. Oh sorry, you're not Hindu, and we were treated like

  349. second class citizens. We weren't allowed to come in in that.

  350. I was in Dubai and they let us know, this

  351. is the mosque that non Muslims can visit, but you

  352. can't visit these other mosques. Right, So there were mosques.

  353. Was very clearly stated it's not for you. You can't

  354. come into this mosque. You can go into that one instead.

  355. But that just doesn't exist. The concept. Jesus doesn't say, well,

  356. I'm for these Jewish people, or I'm for these European people,

  357. or I'm only for these Central Asian people. Jesus is

  358. available to everybody all the time. He doesn't isolate and

  359. treat some like second class citizens and others insiders.

  360. It's for everybody.

  361. It reminds me of that Billy Graham clip. And he says,

  362. Jesus belongs to the world.

  363. Yeah, that's right, that's right, nineteen seventy one, Chicago. Yeah

  364. so great, Yeah, that was great.

  365. So I was just gonna mention real quick that Peter

  366. quotes Psalm one eighteen twenty two when he says, Jesus

  367. is the one who referred into the scriptures when it

  368. has said the stone that you builders rejected has now

  369. become the cornerstone. And so at the very beginning of

  370. the podcast, I said, tongue in cheek he calls people names.

  371. It's really not name calling. What he's really doing is

  372. is he saying, by the way, you were the you

  373. were the enemies, you know, way back in the Psalms,

  374. when the scriptures that by the way, you know, and

  375. you have memorized, you know, and you realize that there

  376. are people who reject the cornerstone. Well, the cornerstone was

  377. you know, everybody knows, any builder knows that the cornerstone

  378. is the most important piece because it sets the right

  379. angle for the entire building right right, and without at.

  380. The score, and brings the two walls together.

  381. Yeah, and brings the two walls together, and without that

  382. stone being number one, perfect has to be absolutely perfect.

  383. But also it's foundational, and so the cornerstone is the

  384. foundation and perfection for our religion. That's who Jesus is.

  385. And so you know, for someone to reject the cornerstone

  386. would mean you know, it would mean everything, honestly, And

  387. that's what Peter's trying to say to the Pharisees.

  388. So then when he says there's salvation and no one else,

  389. that salvation is available to everybody, but it's only through Jesus,

  390. then it says in verse thirteen, the members of the

  391. council were amazed when they saw the boldness of Peter

  392. and John, for they could see that they were ordinary

  393. men with no special training as Christians. Remember just a

  394. few days ago we were talking about when the Holy

  395. Spirit came on them. They're all preaching, all these languages

  396. and they're going, these guys are from Galilee.

  397. Yeah, yeah, the abilities of Israel.

  398. And in this one they're going, there's no special training.

  399. Because you got to remember the priests, Sadducees. These guys

  400. were elite. They were the best educated in the country, right,

  401. And they're dumbfounded by these ordinary uneducated men, right, and

  402. they're going, we can't beat them.

  403. They what what?

  404. So these guys are quoting scripture, they're walking around in

  405. the power of God. It's funny how elite people will

  406. set themselves up because of their pedigree or because of

  407. some people they have on the wall. And Peter and

  408. John did not have any of those things. They just

  409. happen to have the power of God on them, and

  410. they knew God's words, and the Holy Spirit just gave

  411. them this authority. You don't have to wait around for

  412. somebody to give you some kind of pedigree.

  413. You don't. I think that there's there's there's it's a

  414. good idea.

  415. To demonstrate that you have the character to fulfill your

  416. responsibilities and your duties, certainly with regard to education. But

  417. your power does not come from a piece of paper

  418. on the wall, and it doesn't come from some ordination

  419. council or some group that finally approves of you.

  420. Right, it comes from the Holy Spirit.

  421. So these guys who are uneducated step up, and the

  422. power Holy Spirit confound the smartest intelligentsia in Israel at

  423. the time. And then they go on and say, it's

  424. really clear that the whole country can see that this

  425. man has healed and he's standing right here.

  426. How do you fight that results speak for themselves?

  427. That's right. Well, when I read verse thirteen when it

  428. says they were amazed because they realized that they were

  429. unlearned and ignorant men, it reminds me of that scene

  430. in Goodwill Hunting when the genius of Matt Damon and

  431. then Robin Williams says he's from Southee. He's like right here,

  432. from Southee, right. In other words, like no genius could

  433. ever rise up from this area, right right right, And

  434. that's really what it is. Yeah, you're describing the exact

  435. same sort of scenario.

  436. So Paul says later in his writings, which we'll get

  437. to injected through this series as soon as we get

  438. in Paul. But Paul says that God delights in using

  439. the simple things of the world that confound the wise. Right,

  440. that's great, and God loves that. He uses the weak

  441. ones to defeat the strong ones David and Goliath. He

  442. uses the simple ones to confound the wise ones.

  443. God delights in.

  444. So if you feel like you don't have what it takes,

  445. you're the perfect kind of person God wants to use

  446. if you're just surrendered to him, right, and let God's

  447. spirit work.

  448. In you and through you. So you have that.

  449. And then they say get out of the council and

  450. no longer, okay, you can go around. They didn't say

  451. you can't do any more miracles. Isn't it interesting They

  452. don't say, hey, stop healing lame people. They don't say that.

  453. They just say, you can't teachers speak in Jesus name anymore, right, right.

  454. Because we're trying to squash the movement that we tried

  455. to squash when we kill.

  456. Them, right, right, So stop it right.

  457. This is about ready to get out of hand, is

  458. what they're so stop talking about Jesus. And isn't that

  459. amazing how many of us feel intimidated at work or

  460. at school. We feel like we can talk about any topic,

  461. topics that in historically have been taboo are perfectly acceptable

  462. to talk about in school now, but you just not

  463. talk about Jesus. Topics that you would never have thought

  464. would come up in your work environment. Those are now,

  465. there's seminars about them. You have to sit in through

  466. these things, but you just not allowed to talk about Jesus.

  467. And I would say, in all of those things, have

  468. the boldness, be willing to have the boldness of Peter

  469. and John. Make sure you're walking in the power of

  470. the Holy Spirit. But then they just speak up and say,

  471. do you think God wants us to obey.

  472. You rather than him?

  473. We cannot stop telling about everything we've seen and heard.

  474. If you've seen how Jesus changes lives, if you've heard

  475. about the good news of the Gospel, then you cannot

  476. stop talking about these things. So don't be afraid of

  477. the threats. Just keep moving forward with the good news

  478. of the Gospel of Jesus.

  479. Well, that's a good place to stop and obeying God

  480. rather than man. Yeah, so we'll see you next time.

  481. As with the Bible, guys,
