  1. Hey, everybody, we're the Bibble guys, and if you're just

  2. tuning in recently, just know that we are showing a

  3. little bit of reruns for a few months and then

  4. we'll be back bigger and better than ever on August

  5. thirty first, because behind the scenes, we're taking a hiatus

  6. to do some very important things.

  7. Yeah, we're building building out a new studio and we've

  8. got some new structure. Super excited about it. So August

  9. thirty first, brand new content. But in the meantime, enjoy

  10. some of our greatest hits.

  11. So today we're talking about fighting against God, or at

  12. least the idea of it.

  13. Yeah.

  14. So he's Chris, I'm Jeff, and we're the Daily Baba guys.

  15. All right, okay, dude, So hey, you know what, we

  16. were trying to shake up the format a little bit,

  17. and so we thought we would start off by actually

  18. just reading you something that someone else wrote.

  19. Yeah, So, are you familiar with The Babylon But I'm

  20. really not, you're not really The Babylon b is a

  21. satire website that does all kinds of fake news stuff,

  22. but from a it's all satire, okay, and it's led

  23. by Christians. So there's a lot of Christian funny things

  24. in there. It's not all Sometimes they do politics, sometimes

  25. they do social commentary, but there's always almost every time

  26. they publish, there's something funny about Christianity. So this one

  27. today is what your favorite book of the Bible says

  28. about you.

  29. Yeah right, So we're just going to read through a

  30. few of them.

  31. It says, here's what your favorite book of the Bible

  32. says about you. If your favorite book is Song of Solomon,

  33. that means you're a teenage boy.

  34. Yeah, well, because it's kind of a racy book, right right.

  35. Definitely tell me that when you were a teenage boy

  36. you didn't giggle at least once reading through the Book

  37. of Song of Solomon.

  38. Yeah, yeah, a few times.

  39. If Joel is your favorite book, it's because your name

  40. is Joel.

  41. And then this one says two Corinthians. That means you're

  42. a huge fan of the Bible, maybe the biggest fan ever.

  43. No one has done more for Christianity than you.

  44. You hate fake news.

  45. There was a certain famous politician who said two Corinthians

  46. instead of second Crithians.

  47. Huge. He was uge, he was so popular, that's right,

  48. that's right.

  49. He was the best he's the greatest of all time.

  50. So hulbak. I thought that was funny.

  51. If if Hubacic is your favorite book, it's because you

  52. like to shut down people who say, so, what's your

  53. favorite book of the Bible, because you know they didn't

  54. read habakk.

  55. That's great, it says uh, it says I. If your

  56. favorite book is Leviticus, that means you're a rabbi or

  57. maybe amish. I guess that's it. There's only two things.

  58. Yeah, yeah, that's the only two that you could be.

  59. If Ruth is your favorite book, every time you close

  60. your eyes you dream about Boas.

  61. Hmmm, Bos. Wow. So it says it's romantic, Yes, yes, yeah.

  62. Because you know everybody loves the name Bos.

  63. That's right.

  64. If you're Esther, it means you're a huge fan of

  65. historical fiction novels, will strong female league characters sett in

  66. Bible times.

  67. Yeah, yeah, there you go. That's so funny.

  68. So Psalms, right, yeah, this is a true one. By

  69. the way, this isn't a joke.

  70. This is true.

  71. A lot of people who say that they're spiritual but

  72. not religious say that the Book of Psalms is their favorite.

  73. Yeah, so that's kind of funny.

  74. And then this one says if you don't have a

  75. favorite book, they're all just so good.

  76. It just says you're a teacher, you're the teacher's pet.

  77. That's really good. Yeah, yeah, so those are funny.

  78. Anyways, what's your favorite book in the Bible?

  79. Book of James, Book of James. Yeah, because it's short,

  80. you can get to it quick. That would be incorrect.

  81. Okay, thank you, because because he's always the one worried

  82. about us reading too many verses on the podcast, because

  83. it takes up so much time.

  84. That is not even close. It's not, no misunderstood.

  85. Yeah, maybe so is it, because it just takes a

  86. long time for you want to get to the point

  87. and you don't want people to have to just.

  88. No, not even it's not even a time issue. It's not.

  89. It's an issue content issue. Yeah.

  90. So my issue is less is more when it comes

  91. to talking about, you know, the topic. So instead of reading,

  92. for instance, a whole chapter, time is not the issue

  93. at all.

  94. It is.

  95. It is if we're only going to be talking about

  96. let's just say twelve verses in that chapter, only read

  97. the twelve verses. Because what you're doing is is you're

  98. you're adding information that doesn't add to the concentrated topic

  99. of conversation. So for me, it's all about the study strategy.

  100. So less is more, meaningless is more. Just because you

  101. throw more verses in there doesn't mean it is better.

  102. In my opinion, less is more, all right.

  103. Yeah, so we were going to read Acts five seventeen

  104. through forty two, but now let's just read seventeen.

  105. Just very severe things. Officials who are sadducees were filled

  106. with jealousy. Let's talk about that. No, Okay, I get

  107. what you're saying. Okay, big jerk.

  108. I get well, I've poked fun at you in the

  109. past over there, and I thought that this was a

  110. great opportunity to cover that because I think it is

  111. fair for you to say, you know, sometimes it's not

  112. necessary to read fifty two verses if we could have

  113. covered the same major content in selective fifteen verses, right,

  114. that makes total sense to me. So, in all fairness,

  115. that poked fun. Yes, but I think that was a

  116. very good.

  117. So you're throwing me a bone of bone of seriously.

  118. No, no, no, I think that's that's a good thing. Yeah,

  119. I thought it was a good thing for you.

  120. To explain that. Okay.

  121. So anyways we are reading now. In Acts chapter five,

  122. we mentioned.

  123. Yesterday, Wait, what's your favorite book? Oh, my favorite book? Yeah?

  124. So I love Ephesians. Yeah, and I'm.

  125. I really yeah, And let me just say Ephiesians. Ephesians

  126. be my favorite book. Ephesians in luke, it would be

  127. my two favorites.

  128. You can't get two, I said favorite, Well, I said Ephesians.

  129. Ephesians is my favorite book. Okay, Okay? Is that? Okay?

  130. Yep, move on, Okay, man, I feel like I'm being

  131. grilled here. Grilled yeah, yeah, yeah, like I'm on a

  132. stand and you're just coming after me or something.

  133. No, you're the one that put fun of me. I

  134. didn't put fun of you at all. Okay. I just

  135. wanted to say two. You'll let me say one. Okay.

  136. So Act chapter five, we've already said that persecution was

  137. getting ready to ramp up, and there's been a little

  138. bit of pushback up to this point, but now the

  139. heat's really going to get turned up. And from this

  140. point to the end of the Book of Acts it's

  141. pretty rough, and then for the next one hundred and

  142. fifty years it's going to be rough. For the Christians.

  143. So here's what it says. In verse seventeen. The High

  144. Priest and the officials, who were sadducees, were filled with jealousy.

  145. They arrested the apostles and put them in the public jail.

  146. But an angel of the Lord came at night, opened

  147. the gates of the jail and brought them out. Then

  148. he told them go to the temple and give the

  149. people this message of life. So at daybreak the apostles

  150. entered the temple as they were told, and immediately began teaching.

  151. When the High Priest and his officials arrived, they convened

  152. the High Council, the full assembly of the elders of Israel.

  153. Then they sent for the apostles to be brought from

  154. the jail for trial. But when the temple guards went

  155. to the jail, the men were gone. So they return

  156. to the council. Report of the jail was surely securely locked,

  157. with the guards standing outside, But when we opened the gates,

  158. no one was there. When the captain of the Temple

  159. guard and the leading priests heard this, they were perplexed,

  160. wondering where would all end. Then someone arrived with startling news.

  161. The men you put in jail, are standing in the

  162. temple teaching the people. The captain went with his temple

  163. guards and arrested the apostles, but without violence, for they

  164. were afraid that people would stone them. Then they brought

  165. the apostles before the High Council.

  166. Were the high.

  167. Priests confronted them. Didn't we tell you never again to

  168. teaching this man's name, he demanded. Instead, you filled all

  169. Jerusalem with your teaching about him, and you want to

  170. make us responsible for his death. But Peter and the

  171. apostles replied, we must obey God rather than any human authority.

  172. The God of our ancestors raised Jesus from the dead

  173. after you killed him by hanging him on across. Then

  174. God put him in the place of honor at his

  175. right hand as Prince and savior. He did this the

  176. people of Israel would repent of their sins and be forgiven.

  177. We are witnesses of these things, and so is the

  178. Holy Spirit, who is given by God to those obey him.

  179. When they heard this, the High Council was furious and

  180. decided to kill them. But one member, a Pharisee named Gamelio,

  181. who was an expert in religious law and respected by

  182. all the people stood up in order that the men

  183. be sent outside the council chamber for a while. Then

  184. he said to his colleagues, men of Israel, take care

  185. of what your planning to do to these men. Some

  186. time ago there was that fellow, Theudius or Theudas, who

  187. pretended to be someone great.

  188. About four hundred.

  189. Others joined him, but he was killed, and all his

  190. followers went their various ways. The whole movement came to

  191. nothing after him. At the time of the census, there

  192. was Judas of Galilee. He got people to follow him,

  193. but he was killed too, and all his followers were scattered.

  194. So my advice is leave these men alone, let them go.

  195. If they're planning and doing these things merely on their own,

  196. it'll soon be overthrown. But if it is from God,

  197. you will not be able to overthrow them. You may

  198. find yourselves fighting against God. The others accepted his advice,

  199. and they called in the apostles and had them flogged.

  200. Then they ordered them never again to speak in the

  201. name of Jesus, and let them go. The apostles left

  202. the High Council rejoicing that God had counted them worthy

  203. to suffer disgrace for the name of Jesus. And every

  204. day in the temple and from house to house they

  205. continue to teach and preach this message. Jesus is the Messiah.

  206. There is what a cool ending to the story, but

  207. let's let's let's start with the beginning.

  208. Yeah, So I love, I love whenever somebody is bold

  209. enough to you know, not be intimidated or not be threatened.

  210. And you know, here are.

  211. The Sadducees and and all the religious leaders. They were

  212. just you know, just trying their very best to intimidate

  213. and and their response is, you know, your opinion matters

  214. nothing compared to God's opinion.

  215. Yeah right, it's just great.

  216. So just as a reminder, the High Priests and his officials,

  217. they were Sadducees, they remind you they were Sadducees and

  218. Pharisees to kind of two parties within the Jewish religious system.

  219. The Pharisees were deeply religious. The Sadducees were highly political,

  220. not very religious, and they had aligned themselves with Rome.

  221. So really they were being enriched by using their religion

  222. to control the people to submit to Rome. That's really

  223. what was happening. And so these guys are going around

  224. preaching about Jesus, making them look really bad because the

  225. people are listening to the apostles and to the rest

  226. of the Christians and going, yeah, you're right, that Jesus guy,

  227. he really did raise from the dead. What do we

  228. do about that? And they all start turning to faith

  229. in Christ. These miracles that were happening, we read about

  230. them yesterday. Even Peter's shadow just passing over sick people,

  231. would heal them? All these incredible miracles that are happening.

  232. Where evidence is to all the people that the resurrection

  233. was real, what they saw happened with Jesus Christ was real,

  234. and that the power the Holy Spirit is real and

  235. we want that. And the Sadducees are like, dude, this

  236. is going to turn over the apple cart and we're

  237. going to lose our power in our money unless we

  238. stop these guys.

  239. Yeah, And so they bring them in front of the council.

  240. They're basically saying, you know, we've already commanded you not

  241. to do this, you continue to do it. Then, of

  242. course Peter responds, I just reference that, right. He says,

  243. we're not going to obey we have to obey God,

  244. and his authority, not yours. And then, by the way,

  245. he reiterated what they just accused him of. They said,

  246. you're blaming us for his death. And he said, let

  247. me tell you, the God of our ancestors raised from

  248. the dead, whom you put on the cross, right, So

  249. he says it right back in their face.

  250. And then and and I love Gameleio.

  251. So so the apostle Paul actually trained under Gameleeel.

  252. Before we get to GAMELLEO, can we can we pause

  253. just for a second, because I don't I don't want

  254. to miss this. They had done miracles, the apostles. Yea,

  255. all these miracles were happening, yeah, everything, and and God

  256. gave them courage to face off with the most powerful

  257. people in their world at the time. These sadd season

  258. the high priests and the note you know we love

  259. that Life Application Study Bible. It says the apostles for

  260. seven teen and eighteen. It says the apostles experience power

  261. to do miracles. They did great boldness in preaching and

  262. God's presence in their lives. Yet they were not free

  263. from hatred and persecution. They were arrested, put in jail, beaten,

  264. and slandered by community leaders. And then here's the sentence.

  265. Faith in God does not make troubles disappear. It makes

  266. troubles appear less frightening because it puts them in the

  267. right perspective.

  268. What a great phrase.

  269. Don't expect everyone to react favorably when you share something

  270. as dynamic as your faith in Christ. Some will be jealous, afraid,

  271. or threatened. Expect some negative reactions, and remember that you

  272. must be more concerned about serving God than about the

  273. reactions of people. So we think man alive. When we

  274. trust Jesus, all our problems are go away. And in reality,

  275. faith in God lets us be able to face these

  276. struggles with a different perspective. They're not so scary when

  277. you have a God as big as our God to

  278. trust in.

  279. Right. So that's it.

  280. That's why he was able to say the one that

  281. you killed has risen from the dead. And then now

  282. begin to Gameleio. Being this kind of voice of reason

  283. a little bit is pretty amazing. So you said, Paul

  284. studied under a Gameleia.

  285. Yeah. And by the way, let me just tell you

  286. real quick.

  287. It came to my mind when you were talking about

  288. not worrying about what people think, and you know, It's

  289. not like we want to get in people's face and

  290. rub God's word in a negative way and in a

  291. wrong judgy way, you know, and then say.

  292. We don't care about what you think.

  293. That's not the heart of it all. It's talking about

  294. doing what is right and then you know, going up

  295. against people who oppose that which is right. Yes, so

  296. I was actually thinking my senior year, we were going

  297. around the room and we were talking about for some reason,

  298. it wasn't a teacher sanctioned thing, but it was a

  299. bunch of kids in study hall. We were talking about

  300. our first time having sex, and we were talking about

  301. the idea of like waiting and being a virgin until

  302. you're married. I'm the only one in the entire crowd,

  303. the only one, and every and every and everybody's making

  304. fun of me, and they're laughing and they're just cracking up.

  305. Not not that even necessarily.

  306. That I even was, but the fact that I that

  307. I thought that that was a good idea to.

  308. Be to hold yourself back until marriage. Yes, so, like

  309. you're an advocate.

  310. For abstinence, what I was saying.

  311. Yes, thank you, thank you for saying it plainly. Yes,

  312. So I had said that I was dating my girlfriend

  313. and they were talking about sex, and I said, no,

  314. my goal is not to have sex until after marriage.

  315. That's what I said.

  316. And and so basically they were just all, uh, you know,

  317. just cracking me up. And they said why. So it

  318. wasn't the fact that ohaha, you know, it was more

  319. like why, and I said because, And I tried to

  320. share my beliefs, and so I was basically sharing my

  321. beliefs and then they all started making fun of the fact.

  322. And it's so stupid and so outdated it's a religious

  323. book that is so old fashioned and all these different things.

  324. And that was a case where it's like, man, I

  325. presented myself loving, I took a stand. Everybody was against me,

  326. and I actually remember in that moment thinking, I am

  327. proud to be the one standing up, and I'm proud

  328. to be persecuted, made fun of and everything else, because

  329. I wasn't going to back down.

  330. Man.

  331. I almost wore it like a badge of honor, right,

  332. And I was like, man, I'm glad to say this,

  333. I'm glad to stand up for Christ. I'm glad to

  334. be the one that has enough guts to do this.

  335. I was so proud of myself in that moment, for

  336. I have enough guts to say, yes, this is what

  337. I believe. Right, And so you know, Peter or you know,

  338. these guys coming out of the prison who got flogged,

  339. they said that they were counting it. They were rejoicing,

  340. you know, that they had counted themselves worthy, God kind

  341. of them.

  342. Worthy, you know, for the pursuit, worthy to disgrace.

  343. Yeah, so most of us don't think that that's a

  344. good thing. Yeah, right, for Christ, most of us would

  345. fear that we would be afraid of having people mock us,

  346. or that we might lose our job, or that people

  347. would look down on us or will get over looked

  348. for promotion. You know, these guys have been put in prison,

  349. and then when they were let the angels let them

  350. out of prison, which.

  351. Is super cool, by the way. We just kind of

  352. blew over that.

  353. Super cool that the angel lets them out of prison.

  354. And then they go out and start preaching immediately, and

  355. then they get arrested again, and then they're like, well, hey,

  356. we're going to obey God rather than men. And then

  357. they get beat again and then released, and these guys

  358. are like, hey, it's a privilege to suffer for Christ.

  359. You know, our savior suffered for us. It's a privilege

  360. to suffer for him. If that's what we have to do, right, right,

  361. that's awesome.

  362. None of us want to suffer.

  363. But they looked at it totally different than you and

  364. I would look at it, and maybe maybe it would

  365. be better for us if we had the kind of

  366. faith they had, if we would grow up in our

  367. faith and say, you know what, whatever it takes to

  368. get the good news of the message of Jesus Christ out,

  369. I'm going to do it now. They weren't fighting over

  370. political positions, they weren't fighting over social issues. Were What

  371. they were pushing back on was Jesus Christ is the

  372. only way to heaven. Jesus Christ's sacrifice is the only

  373. way to get your sins forgiven. That's what they were

  374. pushing on. They weren't making political fights, right, so, they

  375. weren't being put persecuted because of who they were going

  376. to vote for.

  377. They weren't being.

  378. Persecuted for their position on some social issue that you

  379. disagree with, you know, with the person across the street.

  380. They're here suffering persecution, specifically for the gospel.

  381. Of Jesus Christ.

  382. And they count it great worthy, you know, a great

  383. honor to suffer disgrace for the name of Jesus.

  384. Yeah.

  385. So the the Bible note says, have you ever thought

  386. about persecution as being a blessing? As something worth rejoicing about?

  387. You know, it is a really great question for us.

  388. Yeah.

  389. And so anyway, when I was going back to Gamaliel,

  390. I was just referring to the fact that when Paul

  391. studied he actually, you know, when he became Saul, or

  392. excuse me, when he was Saul and became Paul. It

  393. was a point in time where he actually studied under Gamaliel.

  394. And so keep in mind that Gamaliel, you know, was

  395. intertwined with these religious people, so is Paul. Paul is

  396. a Pharisee. Paul was right there with that crew and Gimaliel.

  397. It is no wonder why he's such a great teacher,

  398. because he's demonstrating incredible wisdom, because he's saying, listen, you

  399. think they're a sham, but what if they're not? And

  400. if God is real, could you imagine fighting against God?

  401. And he's saying, he's saying, so leave them alone, because

  402. if you end up fighting against God, you're gonna lose.

  403. You know, historically, Goammelliel was one of the at the time,

  404. one of the premier Bible teachers. He was one of

  405. the premier religious leaders. He sat on the High Council,

  406. which would be the highest It would be like their

  407. version of the Supreme Court. Right, what did they call

  408. the High Council, by the way, Yeah, the Sanhedrin. Man

  409. as John a blank there. So he sat on the Sanhedrin.

  410. This is one of the most respected guys. And then

  411. among the Sanhedrin, he was, you know, a man among

  412. among boys. At that point, he was even elevated above

  413. everybody else, and so he becomes an unexpected ally to these,

  414. you know, to Peter and the rest of the disciples,

  415. not because he was supporting their position, but rather, you know,

  416. he was saying, I'm understanding that you know, various quote

  417. unquote messiahs have sprung up, and he mentions a couple

  418. of incidences where people had gotten up and said, hey,

  419. I'm the Messiah, I'm the promised one. And when that

  420. guy dies, eventually his followers just disperse. And so he

  421. was saying, hey, listen, I'm an old man. I've seen

  422. this happen. A bunch of times the founder is dead.

  423. Just let it run.

  424. It'll run out of gas. There's no reason. So what

  425. he's trying to do is trying to not trying to

  426. encourage the Sanhedron and the rest of leaders to not

  427. expose themselves to some kind of uprising. Ignore it and

  428. it'll go away. So he wasn't endorsing their position. He

  429. was just saying they're of no consequence. Ignore them, and

  430. this whole thing will go away unless it's of God.

  431. And I think it's a tongue in cheek statement he's

  432. making here. I don't think he thinks it's of God.

  433. I think he's saying, if it's of God, hey, then

  434. we're going to fight against God. But come on, it

  435. always goes away.

  436. That's what he's.

  437. Saying right here, And sure enough, they wind up going, okay,

  438. there's some wisdom in that, we don't need to stir

  439. the pot. And they just beat these guys and say

  440. you can't speak in Jesus name anymore.

  441. Yeah, it's actually fun to think about what Gamellel really

  442. did think because the phrase that it reads, well, you know,

  443. it's translated in different ways in different books, but the

  444. way it translates here is you may even find yourselves

  445. fighting against God. Well, there's a part of me that

  446. likes to believe that maybe he did think perhaps it

  447. could be true. He gave no indication to your point, right,

  448. no indication, But there's a part of me that maybe

  449. hopes kind of like Nicodemus, you know, Nicodemus, you know,

  450. never really truly turned the corner. But we find Nicodemus,

  451. you know, a religious leader that Jesus approached in John

  452. chapter three, right, and he gave the most famous version

  453. all the Bible to Nicodemus, John three sixteen, the most

  454. famous verse and explained in Nicodemus. And Nicodemus was not

  455. ready to leave his position as a religious leader and

  456. follow Jesus. But after Jesus died, Nicodemus went to the tomb, right,

  457. And so we know that he was a believer and

  458. follower in Jesus. And so yeah, so I just sort

  459. of view Gamaliel as like a not as far along

  460. maybe perhaps as Nicodemus, right, but maybe perhaps you know,

  461. who knows.

  462. Maybe you never know here, but I do know what

  463. he's doing, and I think that we as Christians should

  464. be this similar in this He's showing tolerance to a

  465. religious viewpoint that's not violent, right, They're not oppressive, they're

  466. not trying to overthrow a government. But they're saying, hey,

  467. there's no reason to fight these people just because of

  468. their beliefs. And there's some wisdom in that for all

  469. of us today to offer a little bit of tolerance.

  470. If you're not talking about violence and hurting other people

  471. and they have a different opinion from mine, I can

  472. make room for them in a free society.

  473. And so I think that in.

  474. His wisdom, in his age, in his experience, he was like, guys,

  475. let's not fight about stuff that's not worth fighting about.

  476. So there's a lot of wisdom I think in that

  477. you're not you're not endorsing another viewpoint just because you

  478. allow that viewpoint to exist, right, Right.

  479. So as we wrap up our time, I think that

  480. the good thing to take away from today is let

  481. us not be afraid to stand up for God to

  482. you know, if we consider ourselves being persecuted, maybe it's

  483. time and you know, made fun of whatever, whatever, it's

  484. time to start thinking like Peter and John and saying

  485. this is actually a blessing right that God has considered

  486. me worthy to stand up, make a difference and take

  487. a stand for the truth in this situation.

  488. Yeah, and and count yourself worthy, right, Let God count

  489. you worthy in that. So tomorrow we're going to pick

  490. up with some some organizational difficulties that they're having within

  491. the church, and then the first martyr in Christian in Christianity, Stevens.

  492. So it's going to be a really powerful, i think

  493. discussion tomorrow. So that's what we're gonna be talking about tomorrow,

  494. So join us then,
