  1. Hey, everybody, we're the Bible guys, and if you're just

  2. tuning in recently, just know that we are showing a

  3. little bit of reruns for a few months, and then

  4. we'll be back bigger and better than ever on August

  5. thirty first, because behind the scenes we're taking a hiatus

  6. to do some very important things.

  7. Yeah, we're building building out a new studio and we've

  8. got some new structure. Super excited about it. So August

  9. thirty first, brand new content. But in the meantime, enjoy

  10. some of our greatest hits.

  11. So today we're continuing on the story of the Italian

  12. Stallion Cornelius.

  13. Yes, because you said that because he was the centurion

  14. in charge of the Italian Regiment. Is that why he

  15. said that? Yes, the Italian Stallion. Okay, well he's Chris

  16. and he is Italian, and I'm Jeff and we're the

  17. Bible guys. Boom, it's got that big explosion at the end.

  18. It does it does? It lasts too long? Hey, So

  19. last week you asked me a segment and you said,

  20. what made Chris mad this week?

  21. Yeah, that was very enlightening. You were mad about shopping carts.

  22. Shopping carts, Yes, and I said that anybody who doesn't

  23. return their card is not a nice person. Yeah.

  24. Yeah, it's implied they might not even be on the

  25. way to heaven.

  26. Okay, so this week it's appropriate that I turn around

  27. for this segment and ask you what has made you mad?

  28. Oh? So what made Jeff mad this week?

  29. Yeah?

  30. Oh you know what? So I have a problem. Well

  31. we all know that, Yes, I mean, well, this is

  32. a bad problem.

  33. Which one?

  34. So I get angry? Do you get angry?

  35. Uh? I don't think I do? My daughter?

  36. Does I do? I? And so I feel bad because

  37. for some reason, I don't know, I just got really

  38. out of sorts with Bonnie, my wife, this last week.

  39. And she's like, I just think we need some time apart.

  40. Yeah, and she didn't mean mad, not separate, now separated, just.

  41. Jeff, you need to go get somebody and calm yourself down.

  42. Yeah, there we go. Okay.

  43. So I just remember, it's like everything said, every decision

  44. anybody around me was making just made me mad. It's

  45. just stupid. Everything was stupid, just made me mad. I

  46. didn't know why. So then I go and I can't remember.

  47. I had a taco or something, and then everything was better.

  48. Everything better.

  49. So I don't know why I get angry, but I do.

  50. And everything irritates me. I'm serious. The color of this

  51. guy irritates me. The breeze on my face here, everything

  52. makes me angry. And then you know it just takes

  53. a little sandwich or a little sandwich everything better.

  54. Yeah, i'd be honest, I don't think, But then again

  55. I probably wouldn't know, so you'd have to ask my wife.

  56. Yeah, oh, I know, I can tell like I'm just

  57. getting out of control. Yeah, you can tell your shay

  58. I'm spiraling. Okay, So I thought you were saying you

  59. could tell. I'm like, get away from me. I just

  60. want to growl it over.

  61. Yeah, I don't think I want to go on record

  62. and say I don't think I get angry at all.

  63. So what makes Jeff mad? I think the answer is

  64. not having lunch.

  65. A late lunch, not having food, that's right, A.

  66. Late lunch makes me angry, that's funny. So I'm sorry, Bonnie,

  67. and I'm glad that she let me sleep indoors. That

  68. very nice, very nice. So once I had a sandwich,

  69. I was fine. So we are containing hey real quick? Yeah?

  70. Yeah, do you make your own sandwiches most of the time,

  71. or does Bonnie make them for you?

  72. Oh? I demand them.

  73. A woman.

  74. Yeah, I'm making myself. I do not all, but I

  75. do a lot of the cooking. Yeah, I love it.

  76. Well, that wasn't like a wife homemaker reference.

  77. Yeah, but you set me up for it. I had

  78. no choice.

  79. Well, no, no, I don't care about that. I mean

  80. I care about the fact that every home has their

  81. own system.

  82. Yes, right, that's what I was meaning.

  83. So you have your own system, you make most of

  84. the food, so therefore you lot sandwiches. Well, in my house,

  85. my wife is the one who grew else.

  86. Oh yeah.

  87. And I don't know why people have to share. I've

  88. always thought I've always thought, yeah, you my wife can

  89. share grilling recipes. I've always thought that that I would

  90. do the grilling. But then she just sort of did

  91. it one day, and then she likes it, and I

  92. was like, well, that's okay. I don't really have that

  93. big of a desire to do it. So I think

  94. that consequently, she just makes better sandwiches than I do.

  95. Oh wow, she just does.

  96. So I just so a lot of times, you know,

  97. she won't even tell me what she's making.

  98. It's super convenient that you're able to be so complimentary

  99. about how amazing she isn't making sandwiches.

  100. It is convenient.

  101. That's a that's a tremendous strategy. Young men, all of

  102. you brand new married men, just compliment your wife on

  103. how amazing she is. You're so much better than I

  104. am making these amazing sandwiches. Okay, you keep doing that.

  105. Nobody can do this like you. I cannot put this

  106. meat down on this bread. Not possible. I cannot put

  107. the slices in between these stupiece of bread.

  108. Leg Are you doing voodoo in the kitchen? Oh, it's brilliant.

  109. You are a genius.

  110. Thank you.

  111. You're an evil genius.

  112. You're awesome. I love you.

  113. That's great.

  114. So, by the way, she's in the bathroom right now,

  115. putting on her makeup for going to work, is listening

  116. to this.

  117. Yeah, okay, every day, every day, every day? Yeah? All right, Well,

  118. now you know one of his secrets, Liz. Don't let

  119. him get away.

  120. With it, Okay, okay.

  121. So we are finishing up the story of Cornelius, right,

  122. and he's the leader of the Italian regiment. He's a centurion.

  123. He's a good guy. But even good guys need Jesus right,

  124. and so good guy, but he still was separated from God.

  125. And so God sends Peter. God has to overcome Peter's biases,

  126. and Peter goes, I'm not comfortable being here. You know,

  127. I'm not supposed to be here, but God told me

  128. to be here. And so Peter walks through the door.

  129. And then here's the rest of the story. So we're

  130. going to start in verse thirty four in Acts, chapter ten,

  131. and it just says, Then Peter replied, I see very

  132. clearly that God shows no favoritism in every nation. He

  133. accepts those who fear Him and do what is right.

  134. This is the message of good news for the people

  135. of Israel, that there is peace with God through Jesus Christ,

  136. who is Lord of all. You know what happened throughout Judea,

  137. beginning in Galilee after John began preaching his message of baptism,

  138. and you know that God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with

  139. the Holy Spirit and with power. And then Jesus went

  140. around doing good and healing all who were oppressed by

  141. the devil. For God was with him. And we apostles

  142. are witnesses of all he did throughout Judea and Jerusalem,

  143. and they put him to death by hanging him on

  144. a cross. But God raised him to life on the

  145. third day. Then God allowed him to appear not to

  146. the general public, but to us, whom God had chosen

  147. in advance to be his witnesses. We were those who

  148. ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead,

  149. and he ordered us to preach every everywhere and to

  150. testify that Jesus is the one appointed by God to

  151. be the judge of all the living and the dead.

  152. He is the one all the prophets testified about, saying

  153. that everyone who believes in him will have their sins

  154. forgiven through his name. Even as Peter was saying these things,

  155. the Holy Spirit fell upon all who were listening to

  156. the message, and the Jewish believers who came with Peter

  157. were amazed that the gift the Holy Spirit had been

  158. poured out on the Gentiles too, for they heard them

  159. speaking in other tongues and praising God. Then Peter asked,

  160. can anyone object to their being baptized now that they've

  161. received the Holy Spirit just as we did. So he

  162. gave orders for them to be baptized in the name

  163. of Jesus Christ, and afterwards Cornelius asked him to stay

  164. with them for several days. Wow, that's so cool. So,

  165. as far as we know, this is the first gentile convert,

  166. non Jewish convert, as far as we know, it's the first,

  167. first one mentioned in the Bible.

  168. Yeah, it's an accuracy and making an.

  169. Emphatic statement that this is the first gentile that became

  170. a Christian in the book.

  171. Okay, he's saying that because we because the heading on

  172. our note says Cornelius is the first gentile convert. And

  173. I made a comment, and here's the comment. And this

  174. comment is irrefutable, by the way I'm laying irrefutable. I'm

  175. laying the line.

  176. There's an open minded person, please tell us.

  177. Well, no, I mean facts are facts. Yeah, this table

  178. is would Yeah, okay, and it's this the first gentile convert.

  179. I said, well, it's actually the first gentile convert convert

  180. mentioned in the Bible. Yes, right, So unless the Bible

  181. goes out of its way to say, hey, just Crnelius

  182. was the first John, I agree.

  183. I just said it.

  184. Yeah, he said it the way you told me to

  185. say it, did you. Yes, Just now I think we

  186. should rewind the tape on that one. Oh no, no, you

  187. said he's the first gentile.

  188. Convert that we know of in the Bible.

  189. I said it that way, Okay, all right, So anyway,

  190. I'm I have this.

  191. I feel like sometimes you just want to fight, just

  192. to fight.

  193. Well, you beat me at the fall kickoff, and I

  194. feel still bitter about it. So let me just say this.

  195. I do have a little bit of a thing. Yes,

  196. and so I could just talk about this for two secs.

  197. Why I brought it up.

  198. Yeah, So anybody who attaches something that isn't in the

  199. Bible irritates me. So for instance, there was a speaker

  200. at my old church and he was talking about a

  201. lot of these Jewish customs and mentalities. And the woman

  202. who touched Jesus' garment, remember that, he said, Jesus turned around.

  203. He goes, let me tell you why Jesus turned around,

  204. And the why wasn't because of the power drained. It

  205. was something else. And then he said and then he

  206. noticed blah blah blah. And I actually thought to myself

  207. and I said this to him later, which he did

  208. not appreciate. I said, are you literally telling me that

  209. you know the why behind jesus motives, what he was thinking,

  210. what he was feeling, what his motives were. When it's

  211. not given in the Bible. Now, all of it could

  212. be completely be okay. With one single tiny tweak. You

  213. can say this, he probably turned around for that reason,

  214. or it's.

  215. A good maybe, or maybe yeah, have you ever thought

  216. maybe he turned around?

  217. But if you want to lean toward confidence, you could

  218. say there's a good chance. Right, So you can say

  219. all those things, but you have to you have to

  220. not You can't say definitively that Cornelius is the first

  221. convert in the Bible, because there's a good chance that

  222. maybe he was.

  223. Right the first gentile convert.

  224. Here's where it makes sense. It makes sense that, you know,

  225. the Holy Spirit gets poured out to the gentiles afterwards,

  226. it makes sense that Cornelius is this huge influence because

  227. of his position as a Roman centurion. Makes sense that

  228. he would have been the first convert.

  229. Well, the next chapter also Peter gets hauled in for

  230. leading a gentile to Christ and has to justify why

  231. you baptized him. That's great, right, so the consequences, Yeah, so.

  232. Then there's probably, yeah, very.

  233. Likely, so he is the first gentile convert in the Bible, right,

  234. we just don't know that he's the first gentile convert

  235. in christ in the history of christian.

  236. And the history. Yeah, so my big tweak for pastors

  237. and teachers isn't a big tweak at all. Just say

  238. most likely or probably, or I believe, even I believe

  239. is subjective.

  240. Right, Well, this is the reason why I want to

  241. bring this up is because you know you'll hear us say.

  242. Sometimes you hear me say when I'm speaking. The reason

  243. why I want to use more scripture and less of

  244. Jeff's words is because Jeff's opinions don't matter any more

  245. than anybody else's opinions. What the words of God say

  246. in the Bible, that's what matters. So if the words

  247. say it, we believe those words. If the words leave

  248. stuff out, well then we shouldn't. We can try to

  249. connect the dots and fill in the gaps, but we

  250. can't definitively say that God said those things because the

  251. words of the Bible don't say he was the first

  252. convert in all of Christianity, the first gentile convert. But

  253. he appears to be, at least in the storyline of Scripture.

  254. He's the first one mentioned, and it sure seems like

  255. it stirs up pot afterwards, and so evidences are Cornees

  256. was probably the first gentile convert. But the Bible doesn't

  257. specifically say that, so it's fair to kind of wrestle

  258. with it a little bit. And I think I think

  259. that your your opinion on that is very solid. Be

  260. careful about saying things the Bible doesn't say. Just say

  261. the things the Bible does say, right.

  262. And so there isn't I don't remember where this is.

  263. I think it might have been in Deuteronomy, where it says,

  264. and it has the weirdest words. It says, don't add

  265. a jot or a tittle to God's word. And a

  266. jot and a tittle were the smallest marks. They were

  267. sort of like equivalent to today is like apostrophes or

  268. right or commas. That's how small they were jots and

  269. tittles in that language. And so but it would say

  270. don't add a jot or a tittle, in other words,

  271. don't add a single thing that isn't there. So it

  272. just it just is a great challenge for all of

  273. us to say. And by the way, you could say,

  274. I fully believe with all my heart this thing. And

  275. that's fine if you want to go strong on something.

  276. So that being said, and I just really want to

  277. spend it because we spent a big time yesterday on

  278. this story a little bit, but I wanted to cover that.

  279. I thought that was a great idea. But what you

  280. have here now is Peter explains the gospel. Now, the

  281. gospel is not just you all people need Jesus. That's

  282. not the gospel. The gospel is we're sinners all y'all

  283. people need Jesus. Right, that's not the gospel. Your opinion

  284. that people need to be Christians is not the gospel.

  285. Our idea that more people need to pray or go

  286. to church, that's not the gospel. The gospel is we're

  287. all sinners separated from God. Jesus died on the cross

  288. and rose again, and if we'll have faith in Him,

  289. we can have forgiveness of sins. We repent of our

  290. sins and place our faith in him, we can have

  291. forgiveness of sins and eternal life with God in heaven.

  292. And this is basically the storyline that he's telling it.

  293. And then he says, and we were witnesses of the

  294. fact that he died and rose again. Right, So this

  295. is the gospel presentation that he's making. Cornelius and the

  296. others they received Christ, and the Holy Spirit falls on

  297. Cornelius and the other listeners at that point. So Peter

  298. isn't just giving his own opinions here. He's explaining the

  299. gospel from a biblical the actual events of the death

  300. baron resurrection of Christ.

  301. So let me tell a real quick story. Yesterday I

  302. did a funeral and I officiated a funeral. And it

  303. wasn't a family that I knew. It was a funeral

  304. home that needed a non denominational pastor. Apparently, she the deceased,

  305. was ninety six years old, by the way, So that's

  306. a pretty good long life, isn't it. So she grew

  307. up in the Great Depression. It's pretty fascinating you're.

  308. Ninety six years old. It doesn't matter if she'd gotten

  309. hit by a bus. It was still natural causes. Right

  310. at that point, you've lived a long time.

  311. Right. So she has one daughter and a son in law,

  312. and they were my contacts, and we were collecting information

  313. about her life and things, and so you know, it

  314. was a hodgepodge where the dad was Catholic, she was

  315. a Presbyterian, and the daughter was Methodist. It was pretty crazy,

  316. so they called me. So anyway, I go in there

  317. and I sit down with this gentleman and his first

  318. name was Dave, and Dave said, Dave said two things

  319. that stood in my mind. The first thing he said

  320. is he said, well, I grew up in a certain

  321. faith that taught me that it's that all the other

  322. faiths are bad and mine's the only faith. And so

  323. he had this sort of issue at the fact that

  324. you know that I was even there, right, And he says,

  325. if you're not of this faith that I grew up in,

  326. then then you're not You don't you don't count. And

  327. I laughed, and I said, you know what's so funny,

  328. Dave is I was sort of taught the same thing

  329. growing up. And I said, it took me a long

  330. time to sort of unlearned that. And it really depends

  331. on where you believe the authority comes from, because if

  332. you believe the authority lies with man commissioned by God,

  333. you know, and the church has the authority to speak

  334. on behalf of God, then you know that's that's a

  335. whole different story. But if you believe the authority with

  336. the word of God that I'm going to tell you

  337. that Nowhere in the Bible does it say that. And

  338. he said, really, doesn't say that in the Bible. I

  339. said no. So that was his first thing. He was like, huh,

  340. I've never heard. I've never heard that. I always had

  341. the Bible said that, and I said, no, doesn't say

  342. that in the Bible. Okay. First thing. Second thing was

  343. whether that's extremely relevant to Cornelius, right, being brainwashed by people? Right?

  344. And then and then the second thing was I stood

  345. up there and I gave the gospel, which is exactly

  346. what Peter did with in Corneus's home, and I said,

  347. you know, Jesus Christ died in the cross for only

  348. one reason, to pay for your sins and mine fully completely.

  349. And finally, and then and I said, most people believe

  350. they get to heaven based on their good versus they're bad.

  351. But we just have to believe in what was done

  352. for us at the cross of cavalry. So we get done.

  353. And you know, and I only share like five or

  354. six minutes some comforting promises of the scriptures. We get done.

  355. And now, granted, you have to understand they're they're playing

  356. a last song, they're going to do final respects. People

  357. have come up and passed by the casket, like there's

  358. still more funeral to happen, Right, So I get up

  359. and I walk out. This dude gets up and follows me, leaves,

  360. the funeral comes and follows me in the hallway and

  361. he goes. I have never heard that, And so what

  362. he was really saying was and all of his time

  363. associated and he got offended by the church in nineteen

  364. sixty nine hadn't been back. But in all the time

  365. growing up, he had never heard his claims where he

  366. had never heard plainly that that's how you get to heaven.

  367. Wow.

  368. Yeah, And I thought that's unbelievable.

  369. Well, this is the story of Cornelius.

  370. Right.

  371. Cornelius was a good man who did a lot of

  372. good things. He might have been the best Roman soldier

  373. as far as morality goes, but he still needed the

  374. Gospel to penetrate his life. He still needed his sins forgive,

  375. and he still needed to place his faith in Jesus Christ. Right,

  376. there's so many good people, people who do good things,

  377. but you can't get into heaven just good deeds. Cornelius

  378. wasn't on his way to heaven until responded to the

  379. good news that Jesus paid the price for our sins

  380. right and rose again. And so what a powerful thing

  381. for many people when they discover there's no way to

  382. heaven except through Jesus Christ. Right, it's not your good deeds.

  383. So this is Peter back to the very first verse

  384. we read. He said, I see very clear that God

  385. shows no favoritism. This kind of goes back to the

  386. conversation we had a little bit yesterday. The racial thing,

  387. the social thing, all those things, and then God accepts

  388. those who fear him. That's really the issue. Some of

  389. us reject God, reject Christ. And God's fine, I'll let

  390. you do your own thing. But if you fear Me

  391. and you come to me, then I will receive you.

  392. I'll accept you. And this is what's happening in this context.

  393. And then what do they do. The Holy Spirit comes

  394. on them at salvation, so there's not some other secondary thing.

  395. It's at the moment they trust Christ, the Holy Spirit

  396. comes on them. And then Peter goes, we need the

  397. baptizem or is anybody going to objective I baptize these Gentiles. Now,

  398. most of the Christians would have objected, probably right, But

  399. because Peter goes, nobody's gonna object here are they. Right.

  400. Peter's using kind of his apostolic authority and his influence

  401. in the church, being maybe the most influential Christian leader

  402. at the time. He's going, nobody's gonna argue me, argue

  403. with me about baptizing Cornelius. And this this is a

  404. very significant moment. So he orders them to be baptized

  405. in the name of Jesus Christ, and then he stays

  406. and teaches Cornelius for a little while.

  407. You know, another thing that we can learn from this

  408. passage is it says that as Peter said these things,

  409. the Holy Spirit came down. And then it says the

  410. Jewish believers who came with Peter were amazed at the

  411. gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out on

  412. the Gentiles too too. Right, Also, what like like the

  413. same God for me is for them.

  414. So here's here's shocking when when you have the awareness

  415. that God loves your enemies as much as he loves you, Right,

  416. that's a that that messes you up.

  417. So so here's here's the lesson for us here's another Yeah,

  418. another lesson hidden in this passage. Don't underestimate the power

  419. of influence. Don't underestimate the fact that Peter led the way,

  420. and that those who were thinking the same thing that

  421. Peter was thinking when he was praying on a flat

  422. rooftop and God shows him in a vision clearly that

  423. you know that God shows no favoritism. You know, those

  424. other guys didn't have the dream. Those other guys didn't

  425. you know, here's what happened. They watched Peter show no favoritism.

  426. They watched Peter preach the gospel, and then they saw

  427. God working in gentiles, and so they were influenced by Peter,

  428. who led the way. And you know what it is.

  429. It is an amazing thing when you see someone take

  430. a stand in the moment and then watch other people

  431. finally who are afraid to take a stand finally say oh,

  432. thank goodness that person took a stand so I can

  433. align with them or voice my opinion, you know, because

  434. it all it takes is just you know, it's like

  435. that movie I'm famous for movie quote, say we bought

  436. a zoo? Yes, okay, remember twenty seconds of courage? No

  437. what Okay? Doesn't matter.

  438. I saw the movie.

  439. Okay, So Matt Damon said, I watched.

  440. A movie and like fifteen minutes later, I don't remember anything.

  441. Okay. Well, the premise was all you need is twenty

  442. seconds of courage that could change your life. And it

  443. was the twenty seconds of courage that he ran and

  444. asked his wife out for a date that set his legacy.

  445. So anyway, that's the point. And so for you to

  446. take a stand when nobody else is taking a stand,

  447. or speak up or do what is right, or to

  448. actually just say, you know what, I kind of disagree

  449. with everybody in the room, or I believe this, or yes,

  450. I do have these values in my life. You can

  451. make fun of me all you want, but I'm going

  452. to say it out loud. And if you take that stand,

  453. watch how many other people who were afraid to align

  454. that way fall right behind you because they're thinking that

  455. they're feeling it. But all they need is a leader. Yeah,

  456. and it doesn't take much to lead.

  457. I think a lot of words are said about equality

  458. and about favoritism and bias and all these things, and

  459. I think one of the best things that can happen

  460. is anybody who has any influence. Parents, the best thing

  461. rather than preaching to your kids about accepting other people,

  462. demonstrate it, live it right right, leverage your influence, advocate

  463. on behalf of those who don't have a voice, those

  464. kinds of things where you just model it and you

  465. show this is what we do and this is how

  466. we behave. We're not going to get caught up in

  467. the fights. We're not going to get caught up in

  468. the arguments. We're not going to argue polemics, We're not

  469. gonna argue all these things. Instead, I'm just going to

  470. model the fact that I don't show favoritism to other people. Right,

  471. we treat everybody the same. And the modeling of it

  472. was huge here. And because he didn't pick a fight,

  473. he does ask is anybody going to object? But he's

  474. pretty much letting them know nobody's going to object. That's

  475. what he's doing right, right, And he leverages his influence

  476. and they baptize them. So for some people, there's this

  477. big holy spirit moment right in this moment, for Cornelius

  478. and his other people, for the apostles in the upper room,

  479. there's a big, huge holy spirit moment. Did you notice

  480. there was no giant Holy Spirit moment. For Paul, there's

  481. never a time where it goes and there was a

  482. mighty rushing wind and he begins to speaking tongues right, right,

  483. So something he did have scales phosph Yeah, but it

  484. wasn't the Holy Spirit moment. It doesn't say anying about

  485. the Holy Spirit there. So so we do know from

  486. Cornelius the story you receive the Holy Spirit at salvation.

  487. Right.

  488. Sometimes it's dramatic, sometimes it's not, and both are okay,

  489. right now, go live in the power. The Holy Spirit

  490. really is the is the answer, and that's always going

  491. to be producing the fruit of the Holy Spirit, love, joy, piece,

  492. all those kinds of things and God's God's going to

  493. do in your life, and also going and making other

  494. believers operating. You will be my witnesses, right, and so

  495. that's really cool.

  496. Well, that's a great place to end, and we will

  497. see you next time on the Daily Bible, guys,
