  1. Hey, everybody, we're the Bible guys, and if you're just

  2. tuning in recently, just know that we are showing a

  3. little bit of reruns for a few months, and then

  4. we'll be back bigger and better than ever on August

  5. thirty first, because behind the scenes we're taking a hiatus

  6. to do some very important things.

  7. Yeah, we're building building out a new studio and we've

  8. got some new structure. Super excited about it. So August

  9. thirty first, brand new content. But in the meantime, enjoy

  10. some of our greatest hits.

  11. Well today it is out with the old and in

  12. with the new.

  13. This is going to be a great discussion, it is.

  14. I think it's going to be amazing. So he's Chris

  15. and I'm Jeff and we're the Bible guys. Well, I

  16. think I set the bar pretty high there. It's going

  17. to be amazing. Yeah, sure, yeah, I don't let us down. Chris,

  18. think it's something good to say. Man, oh on me. Okay.

  19. So here's what we like to do these segments sometimes

  20. that try to recall great your amazing ability to recall that. Yes,

  21. and so today here's what we thought we've done this

  22. before Psalm or pop song. Right, so we take phrases

  23. from the Book of Psalms or a phrase from a

  24. pop song. Well, today you know the most.

  25. And you're gonna read these to me.

  26. Yes, today may be the most surprising lyrics in the

  27. whole Bible are in the Book of Song as Solomon.

  28. Oh so, so I'm gonna it's song as Solomon or

  29. pop song. You have to tell me it's song of

  30. Solomon or pop song.

  31. Okay, I'm gonna botch this up.

  32. Okay, here you go. Ready, So here's the first one.

  33. I look and stairs so deep in your eyes.

  34. Oh, that could be either one, but I'll go with

  35. pop song.

  36. Yes, do you know who?

  37. No?

  38. Crazy in Love by Beyonce. Okay, let me see playing

  39. outside in the street kissing in plain view of everyone

  40. and no one thinking anything of it.

  41. Wow, gee whiz, I'm gonna say song of Solomon.

  42. Oh you're right, Chapter eight, verse one. All right, what's

  43. he talking about? Okay, here you go. The fire of

  44. love stops at nothing, it sweeps everything before it.

  45. Oh, that's definitely song Solomon.

  46. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, Song of Solomon eight, verse seven.

  47. I look at my kingdom. I was finally there.

  48. Oh the heck you go either way. It sounds like

  49. Song of Solomon. But that's that's gonna be like a

  50. like a like a that's some bait there. You know what,

  51. I'm gonna go against my instinct. I'm gonna say, pop song.

  52. Dude, you're four for four. That's a fresh Prince of

  53. bel Air theme song.

  54. Oh that's hilarious.

  55. You know, there's a whole bunch of forty five fifty

  56. year old people going, oh, that's for Prince.

  57. Yes, Yeah, okay's hilarious.

  58. Well, dude, you went four for four. That's all I've got.

  59. Wow.

  60. Yeah, yeah, that's amazing. Well, I don't think anybody's ever

  61. done that on this show.

  62. Wow, look at that right. Yeah, I'm saying.

  63. This is what I'm saying. This is why we love

  64. it when you do these games. Yeah.

  65. Whatever, that's hilarious. That's so good.

  66. So Song of Solomon was as a kid was quite

  67. a shocking. I mean it's it's PG thirteen plus. Yeah.

  68. Well you know, so listen, I became a Christian, you

  69. know a little bit later in my teenage years, and

  70. then didn't decide to go into ministry until almost I

  71. was ready to go to college, and then went straight

  72. into college. And so as I was in college, people

  73. were like, my very first day of college, my Old

  74. Testament professor said, Okay, come prepared on Wednesday, just having

  75. memorized all sixty six books of the Bible. And out

  76. of the two hundred people in the class, everybody was

  77. like ha ha ha. And everybody had already memorized it.

  78. They laughed because they all grew up in church. I

  79. think I might have been among the small five percent

  80. that I was like, oh no, like I've got to

  81. memorize this, right, So I was hearing in Old Testament

  82. history the stories for the very first time in the

  83. Old Testament.

  84. Oh yeah, it was like it.

  85. Was like fascinating anyway, all that to say this because

  86. I was so new to the Bible. In Bible college.

  87. My wife had grown up in church. We were engaged

  88. to be married, right, and we would write letters because

  89. back then there's no FaceTime. There's letters. There's handwritten letters

  90. and written and she would she would use like sexy

  91. verses and like, and so it was like it was

  92. this way of like sort of being godly right, because

  93. you don't want to be like, you know, too like

  94. inappropriate in that right. Sure, she'd sort of like write

  95. a verse and I'm like, oh, this is like a

  96. flirting kind of a thing, right, and then I write it.

  97. Then I write went back.

  98. You know, all from the song is all from the

  99. song of so.

  100. So all that to say, we quoted the song of

  101. solov It back and forth to each other as a

  102. way to sort of, you know, you know, sort of

  103. prepare for our wedding night. But we did it biblically, right.

  104. So let's take a second on this, because a lot

  105. of people have grown up believing that you know, romance,

  106. are flirting or any of those things. Those are you know,

  107. somehow kind of bad. We shouldn't so they are certainly adult, right.

  108. But God made romance. God made the delights and the

  109. pleasures of that of the married relationship, right, and so

  110. as the closer you're getting to your wedding night, obviously

  111. the delight and the enthusiasms and the joys of that

  112. are perfect find and God made that that way, right,

  113. So then this is why he put you know, some

  114. of the biblical scholars and ancient times questioned whether that

  115. should be in the Bible, right, as if maybe romance

  116. and love are inappropriate for being in the Bible, and

  117. God's like, no, not only that, I'm going to push

  118. it right to the edge of public appropriateness in this

  119. love song between these the you know, the groom and

  120. the bride, and God delights in us expressing romance to

  121. the spouse that He's given us right, right, and it's

  122. it's a beautiful thing, not a non negative thing. So

  123. it is funny though when you compare some of those

  124. phrase is to you know, pop songs.

  125. Yeah that's very funny.

  126. Yeah, yeah, that's great. So anyways, let's pick up. We're

  127. going to start in second critne these chapter three, and

  128. this chapter really is to me, it's just a delight.

  129. It's such a good as opposed to all those undelightful chapters.

  130. Right like the Book of Numbers.

  131. Well, even Paul apologized for some of his previous writings,

  132. but this is a really good one here. So it's

  133. just so if you remember, he ended the last one

  134. saying that God watches us, right and knowing that God

  135. is watching over us, and so then he says, are

  136. we being beginning to praise ourselves again? Are we like

  137. others who need to bring you letters of recommendation or

  138. who ask you to write such letters on their behalf.

  139. Surely not The only letter of recommendation we need is you yourselves.

  140. Your lives are a letter written in our hearts. Everyone

  141. can read it and recognize our good work among you. Clearly,

  142. you are a letter from Christ showing the result of

  143. our ministry among you. This letter is written not with

  144. pen and ink, but with the spirit of the Living God,

  145. is carved not on tablets of stone, but on human hearts.

  146. We are confident of all this because of our great

  147. trust in God through Christ. It is not that we

  148. think we are qualified to do anything on our own.

  149. Our qualification comes from God. He was enabled He has

  150. enabled us to be ministers of His New Covenant. This

  151. is a covenant not of written laws, but of the spirit.

  152. The old written covenant ends in death, but under the

  153. New Covenant, the spirit gives life. The old Way, with

  154. laws etched in stone, led to death. Though it began

  155. with such glory that the people of Israel could not

  156. bear to look at Moses's face, for his face shone

  157. with the glory of God, even though the brightness was

  158. already fading away. Shouldn't we expect far greater glory under

  159. the New Way? Now that the Holy Spirit is giving life.

  160. If the old way which brings commendation was glorious, how

  161. much more glorious is the new way, which makes us

  162. right with God. In fact, that first glory was not

  163. glorious at all compared with the overwhelming glory of the

  164. new way. So if the old way which has been

  165. replaced was glorious, how much more glorious is the new

  166. which remains forever. Since this new gives us such confidence,

  167. we can be very bold. We're not like Moses, who

  168. put a veil over his face so the people of

  169. Israel would not see the glory, even though it was

  170. destined to fade away. But the people's minds were hardened,

  171. and to this day, whenever the Old Covenant is being read,

  172. the same veil covers their minds, so they cannot understand

  173. the truth. And this veil can be removed only by

  174. believing in Christ. Yes, even today, when they read Moses' writings,

  175. their hearts are covered with that veil, and they did

  176. not understand. But whenever someone turns to the Lord, the

  177. veil is taken away. For the Lord is the Spirit.

  178. Wherever the spirit of the Lord is there is freedom.

  179. So all of us who have had that veil removed,

  180. can see and reflect the glory of the Lord. And

  181. the Lord, who is the Spirit, makes us more and

  182. more like him as we are changed into his glorious image.

  183. So when you read verse seventeen, were you singing it? Yes,

  184. where the spirit of the Lord is there is free you.

  185. Such a good song.

  186. So there's a lot in here, oh boy. And the

  187. first is he talks about, hey, we don't need to

  188. write recommendations for ourselves, because you know, our power is

  189. with God, not in ourselves. And he's he's referring to

  190. the false teachers who actually claim, uh actually they were

  191. walking around with these false letters of recommendation to falsely

  192. verify or or you know, give validity to their claims

  193. of having, you know, being empowered. And so Paul wrote

  194. a couple of recommendations, one to Phoebe, one to Timothy.

  195. Uh So he actually wrote recommendations before. And what he's

  196. really saying here is he's saying like, hey, I don't

  197. I'm not like one of those guys that walks around

  198. and says, hey, if you don't believe me, here's here's

  199. this letter of recommendation. So he's written them before, but

  200. he's What he's really saying is he's saying like, hey,

  201. our power is evident through God, not in our you

  202. know of ourselves.

  203. And the proof of the effectiveness of our ministry is

  204. your changed lives.

  205. Right, Right.

  206. Have you ever sat the listening to a quote unquote expert.

  207. They wrote a book and they sold a bunch of

  208. copies and now they're getting trotted out on stage as

  209. the expert, and then you go, dude, you have like

  210. zero results. There's a particularly famous author that I think

  211. about every time for whatever reason, I've wound up being

  212. around them, and they're a theorist, but they talk like

  213. they're an expert. There's a big difference between being a

  214. theorist and being an expert.

  215. Right, So people are like, oh, we should all go

  216. do it, he.

  217. Says, and I'm like, he has no fruit. It's a

  218. neat idea. Somebody should try the idea. But you can't

  219. just suddenly overturn all of what you've been doing based

  220. on this idea because he's an expert, just because he

  221. has a PhD after his name or whatever. So what

  222. Paul is saying is, it's not about the recommendations. It's

  223. not about the paper I have hanging on the wall,

  224. or my degrees or all the commendations I can get.

  225. The proof of the fact that God is moving is

  226. your changed lives. And so I think one of the

  227. most important things, as we have so much information available

  228. to us, sometimes people just get big social media platforms

  229. or big promotional platforms and they've they suddenly come out

  230. of nowhere as some kind of expert. My question always is,

  231. whether it's in marriage, or it's in raising your kids

  232. or managing your finances, is what's the proof?

  233. Right?

  234. Where? Where is their results? I don't care what you're claiming.

  235. I want to see your results.

  236. You know. It reminds me so much of long A

  237. while back, somebody wanted to wanted me to hire somebody,

  238. and they kept on coming to me with this guy's resume,

  239. and they said, oh, this guy is going to be

  240. a great like number two for you, and he's he's

  241. just awesome, and here's here's here's why he's so awesome.

  242. And I and and I just like rebuttaled and and

  243. I just said, well, then how come nobody follows him?

  244. Just tell me that, right, because he looks good on paper, right.

  245. But the fact remains is that the fruit of his

  246. life is that his resumes may say one thing, but

  247. it's just not the case.

  248. He's a great leader. He just has no followers.

  249. He's a great leader of no one. So it's like,

  250. it's like and listen, it's just what it is, right.

  251. I'm sure, I'm sure like he has other things happening

  252. in his life, just not that particular job description, right,

  253. And that's fine because we all have different roles. But anyway,

  254. but that's what arises me because it's not about the resume.

  255. It's not about the letter of recommendation. It's about the

  256. you know, just like you said, it's got to be fruit.

  257. It's got to be you know, changed lives, it's got

  258. to be results.

  259. I got I got interested, you know, I do goofy things,

  260. get interested in weird things. And I was trading global

  261. currencies and I love the four X concepts and it's

  262. always interesting to me. But I was doing it on

  263. a trader account. It wasn't I wasn't using money. I

  264. was just practicing learning how to do it. And so

  265. I was doing tons of research and I'd read like

  266. five books on this and all this, and I came

  267. across this guy that I liked his ideas. Ideas were

  268. really really interesting. And he had this course that he's

  269. selling for you know, a thousand dollars or but right now,

  270. if I hurry right away, I can get it for

  271. two hundred dollars. And there's all this stuff. And then

  272. I was very interested in it. And then he set

  273. himself up as a world class expert, and he had

  274. this massive social media following. But when I got the

  275. digging into it, I discovered that, sure, he made a

  276. couple million dollars last year, but almost no money trading.

  277. When you finally found his trading numbers, he barely beat

  278. the norm, right, barely beat it. But he was making

  279. millions of dollars selling his course. Right. Well, dude, the

  280. fruit is so if I want to learn how to

  281. sell a course, I should take your course.

  282. Right.

  283. But that's hilarious.

  284. Right, And so he's kind of challenging this idea that, hey,

  285. we don't need any proof other than the actual results

  286. of God's changed you know, God changing your life. So

  287. then he gets into comparing the beauty and the glory

  288. of the law. And sometimes I think those of us

  289. that love the grace of God, we kind of shoot

  290. down and make negative the law right in such a

  291. horrible way. And he's talking about it was beautiful. It's

  292. just that grace is even more beautiful, right, And that's

  293. a real challenge for us to keep those two things

  294. in perspective.

  295. Well, I love his I love his comparison of the veil,

  296. you know. And it's great because he says, just like

  297. Moses when he comes down off the mountain, and he's

  298. referring to the story of Moses would actually meet with

  299. God and then when he came down off the mountain,

  300. his face would glow. Think about this, I mean, we

  301. read about it. You may know the story from you know,

  302. from you know, learning about it as a kid, but

  303. just think about like what that must have been like.

  304. And it says that he his face would glow because

  305. he talked with God so much they had to actually

  306. put a veil on his face. And so everybody who's

  307. listening to Paul, they know that story. And so he's

  308. talking about that veil and then he sort of uses

  309. that as a comparison and says like it's just like,

  310. you know, think about it. It's it's he's referring to

  311. a veil that that sort of hides God's glory. Now

  312. they did it because it was so bright. But but

  313. but still the purpose of that veil was to get

  314. in the way of the viewer to see the glory

  315. of God. And so he's using that as a veil.

  316. And he's saying like, hey, it's those people who hear

  317. the word of God and and and they reject the gospel.

  318. It's like there's a veil. And he says, and when

  319. when they when they trust Christ, that veil is removed, right,

  320. But but for now they just can't see it. They

  321. just can't see it. And some of these veils, if

  322. you think about it, they're self imposed, right, Like we

  323. can we can put up a you know, today I

  324. would say instead of a veil, I would say, people

  325. put up a wall, right, And it's just the wall

  326. of doubt or the wall of skepticism, or the wall

  327. of like being angry with God or you know, we

  328. built all sorts of kind of walls. Well, Paul is

  329. talking about veils, and uh, and I thought that was

  330. really cool.

  331. Yeah, So you know, Moses' proximity to God changed him.

  332. That's what it was. That he got so close to

  333. God and nobody else was that close. He got so

  334. close to God it it changed him. And so then

  335. he covered himself because people couldn't look at him. It

  336. was too shocking. But we do know that that glory

  337. faded over.

  338. Time because he said, naturally it was going to face.

  339. Yeah.

  340. Yeah, so he keeps he keeps this veil so people

  341. don't see the fading of this this radiance. And what

  342. he's referencing here is the beauty of the law. God

  343. gave the people of Israel the best way to live.

  344. That that that's what he did. So there are all

  345. the laws with regard to sacrifices, certainly, and that was

  346. a religious law, but he also gave them a ton

  347. of laws about social guidance, about health, about just how

  348. to manage, you know, the the business of life as well.

  349. And what he was saying was listen when you when

  350. I codified these things for you, if you will follow them,

  351. you're going to have a peaceful society. You're going to

  352. have an equitable society. You're going to have a society

  353. that works for the betterment of everybody, not just yourself.

  354. But you're going to be able to prosper because you're

  355. going to be free. But what happened was people then

  356. began to make the law the point. And then what

  357. he says now is instead this when the law became

  358. the point, suddenly everybody realizes there's no way I can

  359. keep this whole law. It's impossible. So then there's all

  360. this guilt, there's all this oppression. What was supposed to

  361. be beautiful became too heavy of a burden. And then

  362. he says, but the new way, through Christ his grace

  363. takes us to a whole other level. Now no longer

  364. is it about us trying to keep every letter of

  365. every rule. Instead it's about living every moment of our

  366. life to please God.

  367. Yeah.

  368. And he said that this brings us to a whole

  369. other level of glory. Yeah.

  370. And it's so interesting about the law because even today,

  371. if you walk around to a person and you know,

  372. if a person doesn't know how to get to heaven,

  373. and if a person is just you know, under the

  374. belief system that you know, at the end of our life,

  375. are good has to outweigh our bad, right, those people

  376. who don't realize that it's not in trusting in ourselves

  377. and our good behavior. The Bible goes out of its

  378. way to say that it's just about trusting in Jesus

  379. and the sacrifice that was done for us. So anyway,

  380. all that to say, those people have a tendency to say, well,

  381. you know, I've lived a good life and I've tried

  382. to keep the Ten Commandments, and they sort of keep

  383. the Ten Commandments as the bar. What's so interesting is

  384. is that over and over the Bible tells us that

  385. the law was actually given to us to show us

  386. that we're sinful. The law was actually given. It says

  387. the purpose of the law was to show us that

  388. we're sinners, that we can't make it to heaven by ourselves,

  389. that there's absolutely no way to keep the full law.

  390. That's the purpose of the law. And then it says

  391. that you know, it led to death. It actually talks

  392. about how the over and over he says the old

  393. law was death. And what he's meaning is not to

  394. your point, not not the beauty of the law. He's

  395. referring to. It leads to death, meaning you can't perform

  396. to get your way into heaven, and so you're going

  397. to leading to death means you're going to fail every

  398. single time. It's a it's a separation from God. It's

  399. it's it's.

  400. Not the answer, and so which wasn't a mistake on

  401. God's part. As a matter of fact, in the Book

  402. of Romans, Paul says God did that on purpose to

  403. show us how bad we needed God's grace, right right,

  404. He took it. He took a performance away from us.

  405. It's not possible for us to perform perfectly. He took

  406. that away from us so that we knew we needed

  407. God's grace. You know.

  408. It's also great about this veil thing, is that uh,

  409. those who were you know in the first century when

  410. Paul was writing, knew that that Herod's temple had a veil,

  411. and and and so you know there's you know, and

  412. by the way, we're going to get into next uh tomorrow,

  413. we're going to get into I think or tomorrow the

  414. next day where Paul talks about how our bodies are

  415. like earthly tents, right and and so so it's like

  416. a so there's like the law of there's the tent

  417. of the meeting place, which is what Moses was a

  418. part of. And then Solomon built uh, you know somewhere

  419. around in chronicles, I guess the tent was, you know,

  420. somewhere around uh Uh, you know, Leviticus or so, and

  421. then chronicles, they get instructions. They build. Solomon's temple lasts

  422. for about five hundred years. Uh, gets ransacked by Nebukid Nezar,

  423. and then Zerubabul comes along, right, and then he decides

  424. to sort of reconstruct one that wasn't as glorious at all, right,

  425. and that lasted for a little bit, but then that

  426. get trembled, you know, and then uh, and then five

  427. hundred years later Herrod builds this temple and in the

  428. inside the middle of the temple was the Holy holies,

  429. and the veil was the thing. And of those of

  430. us who know, and you read the New Testament, when

  431. Jesus was on the cross on the ninth houry cries out,

  432. he gives up the ghost. And then what happens is

  433. it says the veil was torn in two, and the

  434. veil represented the separation between God and man. So God

  435. existed as an as one place as you know. It's

  436. just he had an address. God had an address, right,

  437. and the veils ripped into meaning like God is now everywhere,

  438. you know, everybody has access to the Holy of Holies. Hebrews,

  439. I think nine talks all about that, And so think

  440. about just the absolute brilliance of Paul talking about this veil.

  441. Not only is it a veil that separates us from

  442. seeing God's glory according to Moses, but it's also a

  443. veil that separates us symbolically from going into God's presence

  444. as made possible by Jesus's death. Now we can do it.

  445. It's the veil Herod's veil. Isn't that cool?

  446. And so then the Holy Spirit leads us into God's presence, right,

  447. And that's what So that's why he says, where the

  448. spirit of the Lord is, there's freedom. This freedom isn't

  449. just freedom now to run amuck and do whatever you

  450. want to do. As a matter of fact, this freedom

  451. makes us more and more like Jesus as we are

  452. changed into his glorious image. God's goal as we're free

  453. from this law of death, his goal is now for

  454. us to become more and more and more like Jesus.

  455. And that's one of the benefits of spending time every

  456. day in God's words.

  457. Yeah, that's great. Well, I think that is a great

  458. place to end. And tomorrow we're going to be talking

  459. about jars of clay.

  460. It's going to be amazing.

  461. We'll see you then.
