-
Well, Jeff, today, this is the chapter that gives us
-
all hope for these earthly bodies wasting away.
-
One day they'll be better than they are right now.
-
I hope I get a body like Superman.
-
Oh, that'd be great.
-
All right, we'll find out. So I'm Jeff and he's Chris,
-
and we're the Bible guys. Okay, Chris, Yes, So it's
-
going to be this or that.
-
That's the segment.
-
Yes, So I'm going to give you a choice between
-
one thing or another thing.
-
And I haven't read these yet, and you have.
-
To decide which is the best. Yes, go ahead, Okay,
-
Marvel or DC.
-
This could also be a segment of what made Chris mad.
-
So it is Marvel, because almost everything about DC.
-
Makes Chris madly.
-
Oh, DC's horrific outside of well, okay, there are exceptions.
-
I'm just so disappointed in the majority of DC because
-
if you think about it, DC has like the best heroes.
-
They do, they do, they have the best heroes. It
-
was the Justice League growing up, right, I know. And
-
somehow they just can't seem to quite get it right. Right,
-
So so I think it isn't that they're just I
-
guess horrific is a strong word.
-
I'm just so angry at the.
-
Fact that like you have this, you have this most
-
potential handed to you, and it's like, man, you have
-
the opportunity to make.
-
Something fantastic, that's right, and they just can't get it right.
-
Outside of Wonder Woman Part one, which was like a
-
ten out of ten, right, And I would say that
-
the Christian Bale Batman's Yeah, Michael Keaton was good. In
-
the nineteen eighty nine version, it was good.
-
But those are more cartoon versions. Batman. Yeah, you know,
-
you know, the Dark Knight thing was Yeah.
-
The Dark Knight was really good.
-
Yeah.
-
Yeah.
-
And then and I would say Man of Steel was
-
really good part one, and then I would say after that,
-
I'm trying to think of another one that's good.
-
Wow, you take in the serious dude.
-
Yeah, well Shazam uh is a is a that's a
-
DC thing.
-
So you emphatically said Marvel. But now we've spent two
-
minutes talking about DC. Well, how good these DC things are?
-
Yeah, well, Marvel's fantastic.
-
Yeah. The Bible says that a double minded man is
-
unstable in all of his ways.
-
It does say that it does and by the way.
-
That has nothing to do at all with my response.
-
I'm just saying, but Marvel, Marvel is incredible, Marvel amazing.
-
Okay, here's the next one. Read a book series or
-
watch a movie marathon. That's a no brainer. I know
-
that one. For you.
-
Yeah, it's gonna be always a movie marathon for me. Yeah,
-
although for you, I'm sure it's a book serious.
-
Did you you accidentally read a book once? Didn't you?
-
I read? I read the Bible today, words on a page.
-
Go camping or stay at a luxury resort, Oh.
-
No question, no question for me. I'm a luxury resort
-
guy all the way.
-
Let's listen. It could be it could it could be
-
go camping.
-
Or sleep in the backseat of your car, and I
-
would choose the car.
-
Yeah, no, camping.
-
Camping is just not my thing.
-
Okay. Be spontaneous or plan out everything ahead of time?
-
Honestly, I guess it depends on the responsibility factor. But
-
as long as there's no consequences of responsibility, always spontaneous,
-
spontaneous so we are on vacation, nothing mattered. And you
-
were to ask me both of those things. Even though
-
I do plan, if somebody else planned for me, you know,
-
and just said, like, today's a free day, and you.
-
Could do one of these ten things. I would much
-
prefer that.
-
Yeah. Would you rather here? This is a really important one.
-
Would you rather talk like Yoda or breathe like Darth
-
Vader for the rest of your life?
-
Talk like Yoda? I would, because breathing is a constant.
-
Yeah.
-
Actually that's a horrible choice. Yeah, yeah, I know that's
-
a horrible Would.
-
You rather well this or that? Oh, Jeff, yes, yeah,
-
I think maybe Yoda Yoda?
-
Yeah, I know both are awful.
-
You're a public speaker. Oh that's true. It would probably
-
change your career.
-
Yeah you think.
-
Yeah. Okay, So I'm going to run through Marvel for
-
me over DC.
-
Read a book over by the way, Do you feel
-
just a strong Marvel and DC that I do?
-
No?
-
Oh?
-
Really?
-
You like you like d C.
-
No, I'm just not as big of a movie guy.
-
So whatever movie's planes the movie I'm watching.
-
Okay, okay, okay.
-
And I said, okay, but I like the Marvel. I
-
thought that the Marvel universe, they did a good job
-
developing that whole storyline, so that was good. Usually read
-
a book series, over watch a movie marathon. But I
-
watch a lot of shows, so I don't know that
-
that's that might be. My preference would be read a
-
great book series, go camping by far Ye yeah, yeah,
-
that's so. It's funny. So if we're staying home, like
-
we're not leaving town right, being spontaneous as high like
-
me like to live my life. If we're going to
-
a new city, I want to have a big picture
-
plan for each day, like even for each half of
-
the day. So Okay, in the morning, we're going to
-
go to the Louver and in the evening we're going
-
to go to the Eiffel Tower and eat dinner, you
-
know that kind of thing. I like to have a
-
plan of some sort, but I don't plan, you know,
-
down to the hour or those kinds of things. I
-
just like to know what I'm supposed to do that day.
-
And then for me, Darth Vader over Yoda, I think, yeah, yeah, I.
-
Thought more about that. It's really tough, but at least
-
Darth Vader people be like, dude, he is awesome, you
-
know what I mean, So that that probably would be.
-
You know, it's so funny because you and I are very,
-
very very alike. We are we are like in so
-
many ways, and yet we were almost polar opposites on.
-
On three of the five.
-
Three of the five. Yeah, like you are by far
-
camping guy.
-
I'm not. You're a book guy. I'm more of a
-
movie guy. That's really funny.
-
Yep, so well, in my mind a vacation. The reason
-
why I like camping is you get away from it
-
all right, and from everybody. It turns out my phone
-
doesn't work out in the woods, you know. I love that.
-
I love to just be completely disconnected. And then I
-
love nature anyways. I like sleeping outside, I like all
-
that kind of I think one.
-
Of the funniest things you've ever said that as far
-
as I'm concerned. As in our previous podcast, when you said,
-
how would you like the story of your life, the
-
movie of your life to end, and you said, would you.
-
Say get lost, get lost in the jungle?
-
You said, disappear into the jungle. That's how you want
-
your movie to end, which means.
-
Your life to end.
-
Everybody just wondering what happened.
-
I was just thinking to myself, like, I cannot imagine
-
an ending. It's so polar opposite of anything that I
-
would want for my life.
-
That's just so funny, dude.
-
So he was looking for the Holy Grail and just
-
disappeared into the jungle. Last adventure. Yeah. So hey, before
-
we get into the Bible discussion today, subscribe on the

So make sure you do that and that'll help our
-
algorithms a little bit and it'll keep you in connection
-
with what's happening with the Bible.
-
Guys for sure.
-
So we are continuing on two Corinthia's chapter five, and
-
we're going to read verses one through ten. So this
-
is kind of a short passage today. That's why we
-
took a little bit extra time finding out where Chris's
-
preferences lie. But and Jeff's and mine. That's right, So
-
here we go. For we know that when this earthly
-
tent we live in is taken down, that is, when
-
we die and leave this earthly body, we will have
-
a house in heaven, an eternal body made for us
-
by God himself and not by human hands. We grow
-
weary in our present bodies and we long to put
-
on our heavenly bodies like new clothing. For we will
-
put on heavenly bodies. We will not be spirits without bodies.
-
While we live in these earthly bodies, we grown and sigh.
-
But it's not that we want to die and get
-
rid of these bodies that clothe us. Rather, we want
-
to put on our new bodies so that these dying
-
bodies will be swallowed up by life. God himself has
-
prepared us for this, and as a guarantee, he has
-
given us his Holy Spirit. So we are always confident,
-
even though we know that as long as we live
-
in these bodies, we are not at home with the Lord,
-
for we live by believing and not by seeing. Yes,
-
we are fully confident, and we would rather be away
-
from these earthly bodies, for then we'll be at home
-
with the Lord. So whether we are here in this
-
body or away from this body, our goal is to
-
please Him, for we must all stand before Christ to
-
be judged. We will each receive whatever we deserve for
-
the good or evil we've done in this earthly body.
-
There it is, there, you go. I love his tent illustration.
-
Yeah, and Paul again, the King of visual aids.
-
Ye, yep.
-
So every chapter so far that we've spent this entire
-
week has been a comparison to a visual aid. Yeah.
-
And so in this case, he's using a temporary tent.
-
And you know, for us, we just talked about camping,
-
and most of our association with tents is just for
-
you know, recreation, But for them it was very much
-
a you know, integral part of life because not everybody
-
had a permanent structure, and there were people who actually
-
would you know, pitch tents, like for instance, shepherds who
-
sometimes would go on a year journey and they would
-
have to carry their tents with them or really have
-
a person carry them for them, and then they would
-
pitch a tent and then they would you know, stay
-
there temporarily and then wrap it up and then move
-
on to the next place. And of course, you know,
-
tents also have to get replaced because they you know,
-
are subject to the weather versus a permanent.
-
Structure, right.
-
And so this is just a fantastic illustration because once
-
again Paul is talking about these temporary, wasting away bodies
-
that get worn out, right, versus a permanent structure that
-
is fixed, that is, you know, impenetrable in some cases,
-
especially back then, and so it's just a great picture.
-
Have you ever been in any of the desert tent
-
like the Bedouins or the people. Have you ever been
-
in any of their tents before?
-
The only tents that I've been in are like in Egypt,
-
you know, when we went in to go eat, you know,
-
their whole structure was like a big, huge tent. In Israel,
-
it was like a restaurant that was in a tent,
-
and it was a very large tent, but it was
-
so thick it almost seemed, you know, like it was
-
pretty impressive, you know what I mean.
-
We were in a tent outside of Abu Dhabi in
-
the Arabian Peninsula, and we had gone way way, way,
-
way way out into the desert and we were doing,
-
you know, dune bashing and four wheelers and stuff like that.
-
And we come into these guys home and I was talking.
-
They had their hunting and they had their falcons and they,
-
I mean, they were genuine Bedouin people and they would
-
move their camp every once in a while based on
-
food and we're availability to water and those kinds of things.
-
And I was talking to this guy because I mean,
-
we were three hours away from the city in the
-
middle of just desert, and I asked him about it
-
and he said, I said, have you been in the
-
big cities, the air conditioning, all that kind of stuff
-
at higher right, And he said, oh yeah. He said
-
I could never live in a city, and I was
-
like why, and he reached out and just you know,
-
the tent just like carpets, right, they're so thick, heavy.
-
He says, this is home. He said, I'm free here,
-
this is home. I'm comfortable. And you know, for a
-
lot of us, I think and for me, I can't imagine.
-
There's sand blowing everywhere, and it's hotter than you know
-
all get out out there and all these things. But
-
for him, that was home, and so he had this comfortability.
-
He couldn't imagine moving somewhere else where it could be
-
more comfortable because this was home. And then he would
-
talk about how soft the city people are versus how
-
strong the people who live outside the city.
-
Which I have no doubt, Yeah, yeah, that's right.
-
And so he wanted to be a strong free man
-
instead of a soft city man. That was kind of
-
his perspective. And then he took me back and we
-
got to see his hunting dogs and he showed me
-
how his falcon hunts, and it was just it was
-
really fabulous how he's living this traditional life still. And
-
then we sat down, we had dinner. It's really incredible.
-
But when I read this passage, isn't it funny? We
-
try so hard to hang on to this body and
-
to this life, because it turns out this is the
-
tent we're comfortable in right, right, And Paul is trying
-
to differentiate between this tent that's going to wear out
-
versus these eternal homes that are going to be so glorious, right,
-
And he's trying to send a message in the previous chapter, right,
-
we're not looking at things that are here, because these
-
are soon going to be gone. We're looking into eternity.
-
And he said, it's even the same thing with our bodies.
-
This body is eventually going to run out of gas,
-
it's eventually going to wear out, but we're going to
-
step into these new eternal bodies. He's trying to challenge
-
us with this idea. It's going to be so much
-
better on the other side, So it doesn't matter what
-
struggle we go go through. Now, for Christ's Kingdom. We're
-
going to live for eternity in glorious benefit on the
-
other side of this life. So only the only thing
-
we should be doing is using this life for moving
-
the king of got forward.
-
Yeah.
-
Here, and that's the challenge there is, man, if you
-
could just imagine how great it's going to be. We
-
don't live by sight, we live by faith.
-
Yeah.
-
And it's also important to recognize that Paul was writing
-
to a group of people who were indoctrinated. The Greeks
-
didn't believe in resurrected bodies.
-
That's right, they didn't believe in that.
-
They believe that actually that the soul was being sort
-
of trapped and then when the bodies died, so it
-
was just let free and that was the end of it.
-
But Paul was actually explaining something by the way that
-
was beyond his knowledge. So he's writing about something that
-
is to come that you know, it was not taught
-
by Jesus that we know of.
-
It was not talked about.
-
It was being revealed to God, or excuse me, to
-
Paul by God. This illumination of him just sort of
-
letting us know that, hey, here's what's going to happen
-
in the future, we're gonna have resurrected bodies or permanent bodies,
-
you know, when we get to heaven.
-
So that illustration, that idea of oh, I would rather
-
live in this tent because it's what I'm comfortable with.
-
I think we get the same way that we start
-
to think that this planet, this world is home and
-
it is the point without an idea of the resurrection
-
in the future. And I have a sense it's kind
-
of like there was a little while my wife's grandmother
-
gave Bonnie and I Toyota Turceell and it was like
-
nineteen ninety five Toyota Tursseell. Basically it was a go
-
kart on you know, with windows. That that's what was.
-
It was something else, and I can only imagine, no, no, no,
-
this is the car I want to drive for the
-
rest of my life because it's the one I'm comfortable
-
with when there's a brand new Mercedes available to us.
-
And that's kind of the differentiation he's trying to say,
-
is it's so glorious when you finally sit in a
-
nice soft Corinthian leather in the front seat, you got
-
nice burled wood, all these things. That is so spectacular.
-
But because we can't envision it and we're comfortable with
-
what we currently have. We're afraid of what's coming in
-
the future.
-
That reminds me. Did you know this.
-
I'm not sure if I ever told you this, but
-
my very first car was a nineteen seventy seven black Vet.
-
Oh nice.
-
It had red interior, red pin stripe and it was
-
actually my first car was.
-
A black bet Did you know.
-
No, I didn't know that. It was a Chavette oh Chevette,
-
but it had leather interia.
-
It did.
-
It was all ripped up with the floorward missing and
-
it had It was just a terrible Chavette.
-
But anyway, that's where it rough me up. So it's
-
a VET versus a VET, right.
-
I have a sense that we're riding around with these
-
vehicles because you are not your body. Yeah, right now,
-
we should take care of our bodies and all that,
-
but you are not your body, and so you were
-
riding around in this vehicle, right And that's what he's
-
trying to say, is you're you're you're living in this
-
temporary tent. You and I are riding. We would say,
-
we're riding around in this vehicle and right now we
-
are in chavettes. Actually, I think I said a while back,
-
I feel like I'm in a duck boat. You ever see,
-
like like the dug boat tours and the big cities
-
and stuff. It's a it's a boat with wheels essentially
-
that you can drive on the street and then it
-
goes down the water and stuff. And it doesn't look
-
like it doesn't look right on the street, and it
-
doesn't look right in the water.
-
Right.
-
But he's saying, man alive, if you could just understand
-
the ferrari that's coming for you. Yeah, right on the
-
other side of.
-
It, you know.
-
Later on in the Book of Hebrews, I think it's nine,
-
but it talks about how Jesus was the one who
-
had a more perfect tent, right, and that and that
-
he he gave his life for us and and and
-
and then one day we'll be like him, which is
-
now the glorious body. And and it's just it's just
-
a theme that is beautifully woven throughout the Bible.
-
And uh, and again it.
-
Just gives us just a little bit more of a hope. Yeah,
-
it reminds me of that's song, Baby Shark, Baby Shark,
-
And then and then and then and.
-
Now you put that ear whorm and everybody's head they're
-
gonna be long.
-
And then it says shark attack.
-
I'm not sure if this is how the song goes,
-
but do you say it like this where it says
-
lost a leg, dun d lost a leg. I don't
-
know if we made it up or whatever. And then
-
we say, uh, go to heaven. Uh. And then we
-
say because you know, the almost drownd and then uh,
-
CPR didn't work, and then and then and then we
-
say go to heaven and then we say.
-
Get leg back, that get laid back. So it's just
-
it's the idea that like when we get to heaven
-
we get the leg back. You know.
-
So my friend Kevin Valentine, who has a prosthetic limb,
-
there you go, he says, I can't wait to get
-
to heaven and get my leg back.
-
So then Paul goes on and he reminds us that
-
we're not going to be ghosts, right, We're actually gonna
-
have physical, perfect physical bodies. We're not ghosts. I think
-
that it's important for Christians. Sometimes we get caught up
-
watching you know, TV and whatever, we start believing in
-
ghosts and all these kinds of things. So he says,
-
here to be absent from the bodies, present with the Lord.
-
That's what he says. Right, So, yeah, he said this
-
idea of of us being ghosts, We're not just going
-
to be spirits. We're going to physical bodies. That's true
-
for believers and unbelievers both. And so you know when
-
people are claiming to see ghosts and I don't know
-
what they're seeing, but they're not seeing former humans. Right,
-
So you step out of this life, current life, into
-
eternity immediately, and then either you're with the Lord or not.
-
But he says, he says, then we can. He says,
-
for then when we when we are away from these
-
earthly bodies, then we will be at home with the Lord.
-
There's no intermediary, there's no middle space, there's no waiting
-
for some kind of unfinished business. It's you're here, then
-
you're there. It's you go to sleep here, you wake
-
up there.
-
Yeah, And it really did depends on where you believe
-
the authority lies. If you believe the authority lies in
-
the scripture, or you believe that somebody in a church
-
has the authority to speak on behalf of God. These
-
days you know and have that be equal with God,
-
you know, in his words. But we believe the Scripture
-
is the authority, and so there's nowhere in the Bible
-
that talks about it in between place. There's nobody in
-
the Bible that talks about either a purgatory or like
-
a waiting room or anything like that. There's nothing like that.
-
You know, in this case, to be absent from the body,
-
to be present with the Lord. It's a really comforting
-
thought to know that we'll go to sleep and wake.
-
Up, you know.
-
It's it's sort of like after a surgery. Do you
-
have ever have a surgery where you were knocked out?
-
Yeah?
-
Oh, it's just you know, you know what's coming, right,
-
And it's like old people are fearful of surgery. And
-
when you really realize, like, how could you be fearful
-
of surgery?
-
I could.
-
I could be fearful of the recovery recovery, right, but
-
not the surgery.
-
Because I've had two meniscus surgeries on my knee.
-
And count backwards from ten ten nine.
-
Right, right, yeah, And that's what that's the way it is.
-
And you're like ten nine and all of a sudden
-
you're like, oh, how do you go, doc, Yeah, and
-
that's your surgery experience. That part is not scary, rights,
-
it's the pain of the recovery afterwards.
-
Well, you know in.
-
This case, you know you you know, you pass away
-
and then you wake up with Jesus.
-
It's like, well, jeez, that experience is going to sort
-
of be like that.
-
Yeah, And that's what he's trying to say, is he said,
-
when you really get a real eternal perspective, then he said,
-
we'd rather be away from these earthly bodies for then
-
we will be at home with the Lord. So whether
-
we're hearing this body or away from this body, our
-
goal is to please him because we must all stand
-
before Christ to be judged.
-
Yeah. Well that's that's a whole other sermony all together
-
right there.
-
Absolutely. Yeah, So we live for him because we're going
-
to give account for our life, right right.
-
Well, I think that that's really great. I think that's
-
a good place to end.
-
What do you think I think so too.
-
Yeah, So we will see you tomorrow as we talk
-
talk about being ambassadors for the country of God, and
-
we'll see that on the Bible.
-
Guys,
