  1. Well, today God's going to be the judge.

  2. Yeah, this is a big one. There's good news in

  3. the middle of the bad news. But judgment's coming. And

  4. so he's Chris and I'm Jeff, and we're the Bible guys.

  5. So we know that you're not only a movie buff,

  6. you're a big music person.

  7. Yeah. I like music.

  8. And who's your favorite singer?

  9. A favorite singer good gravy. I don't know.

  10. I can't even the one that everybody'd be most surprised

  11. as one of your favorite singers.

  12. Oh, well, that's an entirely different question. Well, for the

  13. fall kickoff at our church, huh, we were creating trivia,

  14. uh huh, And it was it was a race between

  15. me and you, and we said, who listens to Taylor

  16. Swift in the car?

  17. That's right?

  18. And nobody knew how to vote. Yeah, and it's like, Chris, yeah,

  19. that's right.

  20. I'm not sure that I know the lyrics to a

  21. Taylor Swift song. So I recognize her voice when she

  22. sings stuff like that, right, my daughter for little while

  23. listen to Taylor, But I don't know like any lyrics

  24. from Taylor Swift.

  25. You know some, right, Well, there's only fifty million.

  26. Yeah, but you know all of them, don't you.

  27. No, I know the popular ones.

  28. Well, we're going to find out. So, and then you've

  29. memorized the Book of Lamentations in the Bible.

  30. Right I have not?

  31. You have not, Yes, I confess. So here's what I

  32. decided to do is we're going to why I didn't.

  33. I think Desiree did, but I'm going to take credit

  34. for it. Thanks Desiree. We decided we're going to read

  35. lyrics either from a Taylor Swift song or from the

  36. Book of Lamentation. So you have to tell me Taylor

  37. Swift or Lamentations.

  38. Okay, So, just to server knows, we saw this like

  39. two seconds ago, and he decided to read it to

  40. me because I know some Taylor Swifts.

  41. I don't know any Taylor Swift songs. All right, go ahead, Okay,

  42. are you ready?

  43. Yep?

  44. Okay. So it says I remember it all the feeling

  45. of hitting bottom.

  46. I remember it all the feeling of hitting bottom. Gosh,

  47. that could be it, that could be It doesn't sound

  48. sophisticated enough to be Taylor Swift. I'm gonna say lamentations.

  49. Oh wow, yeah, yeah, you're the Bible guy. Hey, you

  50. are the Bible guy. Your instincts are good. Lamentations three

  51. twenty Okay, how about this one? Walls of insincerity, shifting eyes,

  52. and vacancy vanished when I saw your face.

  53. Yeah, that's uh, hang on, hang on, hang on, hang on.

  54. Enchanted to meet you?

  55. Okay, it's enchanted.

  56. Yes, yes, that's what the song is called. Enchanted. Okay, Yeah,

  57. it's like right, it's like the it's like the second

  58. line of the song.

  59. Yep, we've been to Helen back, we have nowhere to turn,

  60. nowhere to go.

  61. That definitely sounds like lamentations.

  62. That is Lamentations three forty seven. Yes, Uh, did you

  63. have to do this? I was thinking you could be trusted.

  64. I can't even imagine that being in lamentations because that's

  65. a direct conversation. So I'm gonna go with Taylor.

  66. Swift and want to guess a song.

  67. I don't know. I don't have no idea. Bad Blood, Oh,

  68. bad blood? You know that song? Right now? We got

  69. bad Blood?

  70. Yeah kind of kind of yes, yeah, you know that song.

  71. And we'll sing Hallelujah. We'll sing Hallelujah. Lamentations change by

  72. Taylor Swift.

  73. Oh wow, Okay, that was that was tricky.

  74. I've forgotten what the good life is like.

  75. I've forgotten what the good life is like. I'll say Taylor.

  76. Swift Lamentations three seventeen. So I went three for three,

  77. three for five. Yeah, yeah, I went.

  78. Three for three, and then I went over to Yeah.

  79. Yeah, that's great. That's a fun one. That's fun, very clever.

  80. Thank you Desiree for coming up with that one. That's

  81. a fun one to do. Uh yeah. And I could

  82. see the wheels working too. It's just a little smoky

  83. in the in the studio now, I mean.

  84. All all you quoted was I sing hallelujah.

  85. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I skipped most of the rest of it.

  86. She gave me a whole sentence. I didn't read it.

  87. I just read that part.

  88. Oh that's because you thought you was gonna give away

  89. now that the truth comes out.

  90. Okay, So Desiree was kind, and she was she was

  91. more accommodating than I am. But hey, don't mess with

  92. the guy at the microphone. That's true.

  93. That's true.

  94. Okay. So hey, now he's going to really put it

  95. out there for us. So sure, we got a laundry

  96. list of sinful things that are are horrible that have

  97. eternal consequences and are the result of us rejecting our creator. Right,

  98. So sure he already gave that. But then you got

  99. to remember there are no chapters and verses in Paul's letters.

  100. He doesn't start and then stop, and start and stop.

  101. This is all just one big long thought. So where

  102. he ends that big long list yesterday, he continues with

  103. you may think that you can condemn such people, but

  104. you're just as bad. So this is Romans chapter two,

  105. Verse one. You may think that you condemn such people,

  106. but you are just as bad, and you have no

  107. excuse when you say they are wicked and should be punished.

  108. You're only condemning yourself, For you, who judge others, do

  109. these very same things. And we know that God, in

  110. his justice, will punish anyone who does such things. Since

  111. you judge others for doing these things, why do you

  112. think you can avoid God's judgment when you do the

  113. same things. Don't you see how wonderfully kind, tolerant, and

  114. patient God is with you? Does this mean nothing to you?

  115. Can't you see that His kindness is intended to turn

  116. you away from your sin? But because you are stubborn

  117. and refuse to turn from your sin, you're storing up

  118. terrible punishment for yourself. For a day of anger is coming,

  119. when God's righteous judgment will be revealed. He will judge

  120. everyone according to what they've done. He will give eternal

  121. life to those who keep on doing good, seeking after

  122. the glory and honor immortality that God offers. But He

  123. will pour out his anger and wrath on those who

  124. live for themselves, who refuse to obey the truth and

  125. instead live lives of wickedness. There will be trouble and

  126. calamity for everyone who keeps on doing what is evil,

  127. for the Jew first and also for the gentile. But

  128. there will be glory and honor and peace from God

  129. for all who do good, for the Jew first and

  130. also for the gentile. For God does not show favoritism.

  131. When the Gentiles sin, they'll be destroyed, even though they

  132. never had God's written law. And the Jews who do

  133. have God's law will be judged by that law when

  134. they fail to obey it. For merely listening to the

  135. law doesn't make us right with God. It's obeying the

  136. law that makes us right in his sight. Even gentiles

  137. who do not have God's written law, so that they

  138. know His law when they instinctively obey it, even without

  139. having heard it. They demonstrate that God's laws written in

  140. their hearts for their own conscience and thoughts are either

  141. accuse them or tell them they are doing right. And

  142. this is the message. I proclaim that the day is

  143. coming when God through Christ Jesus will judge everyone's secret life.

  144. I like that last line, when God through Jesus, Christ

  145. will judge everyone's secret life. And so at the very beginning,

  146. we sort of opened up and I said, God's the judge, right.

  147. And so here's how I view this passage is that

  148. what he's trying to say is is really building up

  149. to the idea that like, did you ever play Monopoly?

  150. Yes?

  151. So Monopoly is my favorite game. And so there's a

  152. get out of jail free card, and the get out

  153. of jail free card is very similar to Jesus. He

  154. gives us a way to escape sin, to escape a

  155. punishment of sin, and it doesn't cost us anything. It's free.

  156. It's a free gift. The Book of Romans, Paul goes

  157. on to talk about that being a free gift, and

  158. what he's really trying to say is he's trying to say,

  159. let me talk about what you're escaping from through Jesus,

  160. because without Jesus there is no escape. Because sin has

  161. a judge, and there's a righteous God who is a

  162. righteous judge, and he judges harshly, and he's angry at sin. Right,

  163. And by the way, God makes no apology for that.

  164. In the Old Testament, you know, God says, God's a

  165. jealous God. Now God's an angry God because he's angry

  166. for our sin. God hates sin, he hates wickedness, he

  167. hates all those things. Sin demands a penalty, Sin demand's death.

  168. Like there is an absolute judge with a horrific sentence

  169. that every single one of us are guilty of.

  170. And God justly hates sin.

  171. Yeah, just right.

  172. So we look at it and go, oh, it was

  173. just a little lie. Oh I stretch the truth. Oh

  174. I just disobeyed my parents or whatever. But for God,

  175. God knows the destructiveness of sin. It ruins societies. A

  176. little bit winds up turning into a lot, and that's

  177. what we always do, and it destroys so much as

  178. a cancer. It's like, you know, if somebody broke into

  179. your house and wanted to attack your daughters. You would

  180. hate every part of that behavior, everything about it, right,

  181. And it's not that you're full of hatred, it's you're

  182. full of sin, so much love for your daughters. You

  183. hate what the destruction that that behavior coming towards your

  184. daughters is going to do. And it's the same way

  185. that God views sin. It's not that he's full of hate.

  186. He loves us so much and he sees the destruction

  187. coming our way. It's going to destroy everything good in

  188. our life if we let sin get a foothold. And

  189. so that's why he hates sin. And for godly people,

  190. we need to get a similar view. Not that we

  191. hate sinners, but we hate the consequence and the fallout

  192. from sin, and so we need to hate it as

  193. much as God hates it.

  194. Yeah. And by the way, that's not even brush past

  195. chapter two, verse number one, because you know, there are

  196. probably a lot of people in our past that we've

  197. seen that get hung up on a lot of issues

  198. of chapter of chapter one, and yet in chapter two,

  199. to your point, it's the same thought, right, right, right,

  200. He says, you may think you can contemn such people,

  201. but you're just as bad. And you know, what's so

  202. interesting is that, like you know, so, I've always I

  203. heard this. So if you tell one lie, it makes

  204. you a liar liar, And so whether you're a compulsive

  205. liar or whether you've told one small fib you're just

  206. as guilty, because the Bible says breaking some of the

  207. law is like breaking the entire live.

  208. I had a guy asked me one time. He said, well,

  209. he said, have I sinned? Yes? Am I a sinner? No?

  210. And I said, well, let me ask you this. If

  211. you rob a bank, what are you? You're a bank robber? Right?

  212. How many people do you have to kill to be

  213. a murderer? Just one?

  214. Just one? Right, it's the same one.

  215. I've only robbed one bank, I said, So it's the

  216. same there. So it's not we all want to justify ourselves.

  217. We want to make ourselves better. There's other people we

  218. know that are worse, but for sure, but we we

  219. hate this idea you're worse than me. Well probably probably,

  220. I'll admit that, because you know, Verse one tells me,

  221. I can't think that I can condemn you because I'm

  222. just as bad as you are. But so when he

  223. says this, we read, when we read through that all

  224. that list of all those sins yesterday, I'm telling you

  225. our listeners heard certain ones and went or they heard

  226. certain ones and went, yeah that's right, that's a terrible thing,

  227. right right, and then kind of you know, well, yeah,

  228. disobedient to parents, are insolent orreling, quarreling, Yeah that's about

  229. you know, Well, I'm Scottish. I just have a bad attitude.

  230. Why because I have Scottish blood in me. Oh yeah, okay,

  231. so I just have a bad attitude because funny whatever,

  232. and so so we find ways to scot right now,

  233. why why all five of our listeners just quit listening.

  234. Remember we said we had like eighty something people in

  235. Ireland that listen. So all the Irish people are like,

  236. go ahead from Scotts. But so we find reasons to

  237. dismiss why our sin is an issue? Right, Oh, it's

  238. just who I am or whatever. And what he's saying

  239. is he's not saying that you yourself do the exact sin

  240. that other people do. We all have our own proclivity

  241. for our own you know, sin preferences. What he's saying

  242. is the level of your sin is equal to the

  243. level of other people's sins, right, and so you know,

  244. you might be the one that is, you know, particularly

  245. deceptive and malicious, and somebody else is you know, and

  246. you just understand deception is just part of your job

  247. and career. You can't get ahead and in my industry

  248. without being deceptive, and so you excuse that, going, well,

  249. it's just a nature of what I have to do.

  250. But you're horrified by the backstabbers and the haters of

  251. God and the insolent, right, and you're like, oh my goodness,

  252. that's horrible. And what he's saying is, listen, if you're

  253. on the list at all, you're on the list, right,

  254. And that's what he's saying in these first verses there

  255. is if you're a sinner, you're a sinner. Quit judging

  256. other sinners at that point, right, right, So we have

  257. to get to the point where we realize we are sinners.

  258. And he's telling us here, listen, don't you see how

  259. wonderfully kind and tolerant and patient God is with you? Yeah,

  260. so he says God, which which by the.

  261. Way, brings up like some subjects of like why would

  262. God continue to bless sinful people? Right?

  263. Right?

  264. Like why do rich why do thieves continue to get

  265. rich and they're allowed to enjoy the riches. You know why,

  266. And it's because God blesses us in spite of our

  267. sins on sort of all sorts of levels.

  268. Right, It doesn't always require the favor of God. Sometimes

  269. it's just that you've chosen to do something and it

  270. benefited you, and doesn't it to be God's favor, But

  271. it is God's tolerance.

  272. Yeah, and in some cases God's mercy.

  273. Yeah, that's right. But so then he says, can't you

  274. see that his kindness is intended to turn you from

  275. your sin? So you read a passage like this and

  276. you go, oh, yeah, this is horrible. Quit reading this stuff,

  277. and Paul saying, no, no, listen, I'm not telling you

  278. this to make you feel horrible. Can't you see how

  279. good God is that even though you are a sinner,

  280. God loves you. That God's whole reason for telling you

  281. that you're a sinner is kindness that's intended to turn

  282. you from your sin. God knows, like I was saying,

  283. that person breaking into your house trying to hurt yours,

  284. you hate that behavior because you love your daughter so much.

  285. God is telling you about the consequences of sin because

  286. He loves you so much that when you finally realize

  287. how bad sin is and you begin to get a

  288. hint of it, like God understands it, then you get

  289. to understand how good he is because he's turning us

  290. away from it to a better life. And so Paul's

  291. trying to establish, yes, you're a sinner, but man, God

  292. only tells you that so you can have the good life.

  293. That's what he's saying. It's it's good news. It's just

  294. kind of wrapped in the like ugly wrapping paper here

  295. for us in this first you know few chapters.

  296. Yeah, I remember specifically one time where I was written

  297. into a situation. I'm not sure if it's gonna be

  298. a really good story. So i'll really sum it up

  299. because I don't want to mention names or situations, but

  300. I won't. But but the bottom line is is I

  301. remember one time somebody was coming up to me and

  302. they were being super super critical of something about me.

  303. Then tell us names.

  304. I'll tak the first. But this particular girl I was

  305. actually I just finished speaking and actually it was actually

  306. something that I was wearing. She didn't like what I

  307. was wearing. I loved what I was wearing right, but

  308. like she just thought it looked too country or whatever

  309. it was. So she she just went like backstage and

  310. you know, sort of like because you know, we always

  311. give each other feedback and to be positive, right, and

  312. she just sort of looked me up and down and

  313. she went like she's like and by the way, and

  314. I said what and she goes she like look up

  315. and down, and she was trying to make a statement

  316. like this really condemning statement about my clothes. And I

  317. remember in my mind going like, okay, I have a

  318. choice how to react here, like, you know, and I

  319. could just say what is your deal or you know,

  320. or be like what I like what I'm wearing, you know,

  321. whatever it is. And I remember in that moment, I

  322. just decided to just play like the most godly person

  323. but not godly to scorn her or not trying to he.

  324. Pulls a fire on her.

  325. But I was just legitimately like, well, you know what,

  326. I'm just going to give her total grace. And I

  327. gave her the most authentic grace reaction. I just looked

  328. at her, you know, and pretended like she didn't even

  329. offend me, and just kept not going on and sort

  330. of ignored it, and she really wanted to continue the conversation.

  331. She wanted to bring it up, but because of my reaction,

  332. she was like, oh, and so she moved on. But

  333. you could just tell us eating at her to say like,

  334. you need to change your shirt. Right. So here's what happens.

  335. The second service. She comes back and she goes, I

  336. felt horrible at you know, she's I'm so sorry. She goes,

  337. I just want to tell you, I just don't like

  338. your shirt. She goes, And the way I went about

  339. it was horrible, and I thought you were going to

  340. come back at me, but you were so loving and

  341. so kind. And she goes, and I just walked away,

  342. and she goes to that entire second service. I thought,

  343. I feel so bad, and you reacted so kindly to me,

  344. and so and I just and so that's what reminded

  345. me of reminds me of the fact then in spite

  346. of our you know, bad reactions and bad behaviors, like

  347. God's kindness and this mercy, you know, it's supposed to

  348. compel us to go I can't believe you're so kind.

  349. I can't believe. So maybe it was a decent story,

  350. but I wanted to say more, but I couldn't anyway.

  351. Well, I can see the parallels of you forgiving her,

  352. you know, disliking your shirt, and God forgiving you know,

  353. murderers and malicious behavior. It's very very similar.

  354. Yeah, well guess what, Jeff, if you're on the list,

  355. draw on the list, right.

  356. That's exactly right, that's exactly right. This is what I

  357. was doing, was minimizing her saying that. The reality is

  358. it's the same God says. Listen, you've broken this law,

  359. and so now you can't judge other people. Now God does,

  360. and God is clear on this. So then it's not

  361. a judgmental thing for you and me as pastors to

  362. warn people that the bridge is out down the road.

  363. We're not being judgmental or hateful when we say this

  364. is what God says. This behavior has to stop. You

  365. have to stop that behavior and go God's way. Don't

  366. indulge in the flesh, don't go down this road. It's

  367. going to ruin your life. Instead, choose to do the

  368. right thing that's not judgmental, that is being loving. As

  369. long as we don't do it in a mean spirited way.

  370. We do it in a loving way, and we say

  371. be cautious, be careful, don't go in that direction. We

  372. love people enough to tell them what is true, what

  373. is right, what is good, and what is bad. And

  374. that is a part of the good news of the

  375. Gospel is being able to identify what is the bad

  376. side as well as the good side.

  377. You know, it's easy actually when you look at it

  378. from a thirty thousand foot view, if you sort of

  379. back up, you know, and you sort of look at

  380. the concept of sharing faith. You know, whether it's a

  381. preacher who gets paid to share the good news, or

  382. whether it's somebody typing in all caps, right, just trying

  383. to trying to, you know, share their opinion about what

  384. God says. There's two extremes, right, and then you have

  385. people who don't type in all caps and they actually

  386. share in the right way. And then you have preachers

  387. who actually share in the wrong way.

  388. That's right, you know what I mean.

  389. Yeah, So you think about the complicated, you know, a

  390. demeanor in which we have in trying to communicate the

  391. truth because we're trying to communicate the truth from the

  392. posture of a perfect God in an imperfect way. And

  393. it's so funny, how I mean, really truly if we

  394. were to somehow identify our brokenness by let's just say

  395. like a color, you know, let's just say black and white,

  396. like all of our bad intentions, all of our mixed emotions,

  397. all of our brokenness, unhealthy tendencies, you know what I mean,

  398. the shadow missions. I mean, we have so much just

  399. sort of wound up and the complexity and the brokenness

  400. of who we are. We try so hard to communicate,

  401. you know, what a perfect God thinks, feels, how he acts,

  402. how he responds his intentions. We're trying to communicate absolute

  403. perfection through completely imperfect you know, imperfect ways. And so

  404. a lot of times you'll hear a preacher preach fire

  405. and brimstone in a way that feels judging, condemning. Uh.

  406. And what he's really doing is he's actually preaching the

  407. truth in a bad.

  408. Way, right.

  409. And so what he's not doing is he's not embracing

  410. the entire character of God.

  411. He's preaching it in a in a emphatic way that

  412. you're receiving in a bad way. Yeah. So sometimes it

  413. can be our own hearts that cause us to reject

  414. the delivery.

  415. Yeah, and perfection on the giver and the receiver.

  416. And the receiver both, right, yes, And so I just think.

  417. That it's it's easy to see how we can have

  418. bad impressions of people, you know, because you know, the

  419. Bible does tell us he as it's our job as

  420. Christians to point out the sin and other people's lives

  421. who we love and we're supposed to be in a

  422. loving way. So, for instance, if my brother is, you know,

  423. cheating on his wife, which you know he did not do,

  424. but if he was, and I'm like, hey, man, I

  425. think it's sort of my responsibility to step up and

  426. just say, you know, Jim, you're a Christian, you love Jesus,

  427. this isn't the right thing to do, and I'm calling

  428. you out on it. I'm not just gonna sit by

  429. and let this happen. That's what God calls us to do.

  430. And so whether it's something extreme or something small, we

  431. have that job.

  432. And yet we just have to be humble enough to

  433. admit that we're also sinners. Yes, right, So we have

  434. to recognize if I'm admitting I'm a sinner and I'm

  435. also trying to help my brother overcome his sin, then

  436. it's not judgmental for me to help point out yours

  437. while I'm acknowledging mine. Where it's judgmental is when I

  438. act like I'm all high and mighty and perfect, and

  439. you should be more like me. None of us should

  440. be more like each other. We should all be more

  441. like Christ. And that's really the goal. And so then

  442. this grace, this law. My favorite verse, the best news

  443. in this entire passage today is verse eleven that says,

  444. because God does not show favoritism, so God doesn't have

  445. his favorite people that he's gonna bless in his least

  446. favorite people. He's saying, listen, everybody that will turn from

  447. their sin and come to me, good news is available

  448. to you. The Gospel is available to you. So that's

  449. really what the rest of this book is going to

  450. be about, is you know, God shows no favoritism.

  451. So all right, well, that sounds like a great place

  452. to end our thoughts, and we will see you next

  453. time on the Bible, guys,
