  1. Hey, everybody, we're the Bible guys, and if you're just

  2. tuning in recently, just know that we are showing a

  3. little bit of reruns for a few months and then

  4. we'll be back bigger and better than ever on August

  5. thirty first, because behind the scenes we're taking a hiatus

  6. to do some very important things.

  7. Yeah, we're building building out a new studio and we've

  8. got some new structure. Super excited about it. So August

  9. thirty first, brand new content. But in the meantime, enjoy

  10. some of our greatest hits.

  11. Well, Jeff, the Law is the Law.

  12. Wow, that's what we're talking about today. He's Chris, I'm Jeff,

  13. and we're the Bible guys.

  14. So every once in a while we do a segment

  15. called mail Bags, and mail Bags is basically going through

  16. email those you know, mail bags would have been like

  17. David Letterman would have had physical letters, right, that's right,

  18. But we're going through emails.

  19. All of our twenty year old listeners and like what's

  20. a man? Right?

  21. But anyway, So, by the way, incidentally, if you want

  22. us to discuss any question that you have that you

  23. would like us to discuss, just for fun, we would

  24. love it if you would email us at info at

  25. the Bible guys dot com.

  26. But this one comes from David S.

  27. And he asks this question, what's the best prank you've

  28. ever pulled on someone?

  29. Yeah?

  30. Were you a prankster? And are you a prankster?

  31. The troublemaker more than a prankster for me? Yeah, yeah.

  32. Pranks require planning, and I'm not much of a planner.

  33. Yeah.

  34. Yeah.

  35. Do you remember the guys when I moved offices that heritage,

  36. they actually hooked up into the ceiling vent, into the

  37. air conditioning vent, they put the Hazer, which.

  38. Is like you know the smoke machine on stage, the.

  39. Smoke machine or the fog machine on stage, and they

  40. actually put it into my thing and trays like.

  41. Goes, let's go in your office. I want to I

  42. want to talk to you about something.

  43. And all of a sudden, I look up and all

  44. this fogstar's coming to my office.

  45. But you thought it was smoked.

  46. I thought it was a legitimate problem, and so I

  47. took it out and I started videoing it to show Chad,

  48. which is our executive Yeah, and they were all laughing.

  49. So they were all filming me and laughing. Then they

  50. tried to hold me in the office and eventually my

  51. whole office.

  52. Can fill with smoke. Right, hilarious.

  53. That's a good one. Well, so Bonnie had been talking

  54. about getting a tattoo for a while. Oh yeah, and so, hey,

  55. if you have a tattoo, I don't think it's wrong

  56. or whatever. I'm just not a huge fan of tattoos.

  57. So Bonnie wants to get a tattoo and I'm like, oh,

  58. I don't know. I'm trying to talk her out of it.

  59. And so she goes out with one of her friends

  60. who attends Heritage ivon you know who you are, and

  61. they sent me a picture of Bonnie sitting in a

  62. thing and she's almost done with a tattoo. This guy's

  63. like on the thing like that, and she said, hey,

  64. will she were here or something. She sends me this

  65. text and it was on her birthday and I'm like,

  66. oh my gosh. Well now I'm thinking, well, I have

  67. to be kind, I can't, you know. So I'm just

  68. like wow, but I am like freaking out about this.

  69. Like what in the world I thought we settled on

  70. her arm? Yeah yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, like mom on

  71. her arm or something like that. Well, it turned out

  72. the guy. They went in and paid this guy to

  73. draw it on her arm, color it all in and

  74. then just be you know, sitting there with the thing.

  75. It was so funny, funny. So when I finally realized,

  76. because I'm just doing my best to be kind and decide,

  77. but I'm pretty much losing it because I thought we'd decided,

  78. let's a crank on you. Yeah, that was a prank

  79. on me. I'm not really much of a prankster, Okay.

  80. Jenna called me one time, my daughter to tell me

  81. that Bunny had been arrested because I've been trying to

  82. get a hold of her, and Jenna's crying and really

  83. making it real, like very real, and I was freaking

  84. out about that. So people pull pranks on me, But

  85. I don't do a lot of pranks.

  86. Wow, So I do. I used to do a lot

  87. of pranks.

  88. I remember in college we was it was Baptist Bable

  89. College BBC's what we called it. And there was a

  90. guy who's still a missionary, a friend of mine. I

  91. see him on Facebook, but his name is Lance Gocher. Okay,

  92. so Lance, uh one time made us mad, and actually

  93. specifically he made my friend mad, Jeff, and so Jeff

  94. wanted to get him back, and Lance was really just

  95. like he harped on Jeff, and by the way, with

  96. good reason in a lot of ways, right, but man,

  97. he just got us all sort of like wound up,

  98. like this guy is just he has.

  99. A common Well come on, Lance, right, come on Lance.

  100. So here's here's what happened. We actually carried his furniture

  101. from his dorm. We're talking like a couch, a desk, right, lamps, everything, right,

  102. and we carried it down.

  103. Three floors down the dorm room, three floors.

  104. All the way across the co odd and we actually

  105. laid it on the middle of the of the of

  106. the field, the grassy knoll, in front of the cafeteria.

  107. And everybody gets out of call, you know, classes at

  108. the same time. They all head to the cafeteria. Every

  109. he's there sort of around noon ish, and the entire

  110. school is pretty much in this cafeteria. So we knew

  111. that he was going to be coming across the lawn

  112. and we were going to be watching him. So we

  113. carried everything down. We're talking underwear, everything, clothes, everything, And

  114. it took us like an hour and a half with

  115. the team of people, and we carried it all the

  116. way down and across the campus, and then we put

  117. a sign of that said, uh BBC Patriots yard sale.

  118. Oh no, right, Patriots was your mascot. He was.

  119. He was a singing Okay, singing group was called a Patriot.

  120. Okay, but they are the BBC Patriots, so like the

  121. basketball team is called the Patriots.

  122. So for whatever reason.

  123. So you took everything he owned, put it out in

  124. the yard and had a yard sale of his stuff.

  125. I literally, in my mind can still visual like he

  126. was wearing a blue shirt when he was coming over

  127. the lawn.

  128. The wind was blowing. He had a red tie.

  129. With poka dots on him, and it was actually blowing

  130. in the wind, and he had a suit jacket on.

  131. He was carrying a briefcase and he was looking down

  132. because it was windy. And so because he was looking down,

  133. he come over the lawn and the entire cafeteria was

  134. all glass, And I kid you not, there was like

  135. eighty people pressed against that window watching his reaction, right,

  136. and there's two sets of glass doors, so he couldn't

  137. even really see us.

  138. Because of the reflection.

  139. And he comes over the thing and he's looking down

  140. and he and he sort of sees like this huge,

  141. like you know.

  142. Like garage shell on the lawn.

  143. And he looks over and he looks back down. He

  144. almost walks by it. Then all of a sudden, he

  145. looks back over and he notices like something that looks familiar.

  146. And then all of a sudden, you can just see

  147. the look on his face and he drops his you know, briefcase,

  148. and he looks and immediately he just starts grabbing his

  149. stuff and running towards the dorm, you know, as if

  150. he's going to carry everything up by himself. And so

  151. we actually laughed super hard, and then believe or not,

  152. we all went out and helped him carry back up.

  153. Yeah right, So we had our you know, our laugh

  154. at his expense.

  155. Oh my goodness.

  156. Then we had a team of people helped him back up.

  157. Yeah, that's hysterical. So note to self, don't mess with

  158. Chris and his friends. Well, hey, sorry, sorry, Lance.

  159. And by the way, I've had I have several other

  160. pranks that I do not want to say.

  161. Yeah, okay, okay, I was thinking about the time that

  162. you did that roast on me and then I sent

  163. you to a really bad part of Havana oh yeah,

  164. for sure. Yeah, so yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah I

  165. did that one, but that's a whole other story I

  166. don't want to tell today.

  167. Yeah yeah, yeah, some things.

  168. Are best left buried. Yes, so that's a fun one.

  169. Well hey, thanks David S.

  170. Yeah, for sure, that's a good one.

  171. Now we know a little bit more about Zarba's character.

  172. Just don't cross him.

  173. Wait a minute, you're hard on me, and you don't

  174. want to tell the prank that you played on me.

  175. Nope, nope, I'm good.

  176. Come on, Jeff, No, we're good. Come on, Jeff, here

  177. we go.

  178. So.

  179. Uh. In Romans chapter two, we're reading, you know, if

  180. you're on the list drug, we're reading in verse seventeen,

  181. and we're going to just read, I think, to the

  182. end of the chapter here and now he's speaking to

  183. the Jews and explaining the law because so many people

  184. in Paul's day believed, yes, the Gentiles are bad because

  185. they don't have any law, any spiritual law, and they're

  186. just sinners. But we have a spiritual law, so we're good.

  187. And so he's going to unpack that. He says, you

  188. who call yourselves Jews are relying on God's law, and

  189. you boast about your special relationship with him. You know

  190. what he wants, You know what is right because you've

  191. been taught his law. You're convinced that you're a guide

  192. for the blind and a light for the people who

  193. are lost in darkness. You think you can instruct the

  194. ignorant and teach children the ways of God, for you

  195. are certain that God's law gives you complete knowledge and truth. Well, then,

  196. if you teach others, why don't you teach yourself. You

  197. tell others not to steal, but do you steal? You

  198. say it's wrong to commit adultery, but do you commit adultery?

  199. You condemn idolatry, but do you use items stolen from

  200. pagan temples. You're so proud of knowing the law, but

  201. you dishonor God by breaking it. No wonder, the scriptures

  202. say the gentiles blasphem the name of God because of you,

  203. the Jewish ceremonials. Circumcision has value only if you obey

  204. God's law. But if you don't obey God's law, you're

  205. no better off than an uncircumcised gentile. And if the

  206. gentiles obey God's law, won't God declare them to be

  207. his own people. In fact, uncircumcised gentiles who keep God's

  208. law will condemn you Jews who are circumcised and possess

  209. God's law, but don't obey it, for you are not

  210. a true Jew just because you were born of Jewish parents,

  211. or because you've gone through the ceremonial circumcision. Now, a

  212. true Jew is one whose heart is right with God.

  213. But in true circumcision is not merely obeying a letter

  214. of the law. Rather, it is a change of heart

  215. produced by God's spirit. And a person with a changed

  216. heart seeks praise from God, not from people. Yeah, so

  217. he's starting to blend the lines here between Jews and

  218. Gentiles based on not just obeying the rules, but on

  219. the heart, what's going on on the inside.

  220. So somebody who's new.

  221. The scripture, if they read like, let's just say these verses,

  222. you know, and that's their daily devotion for the day,

  223. they may think to themselves, what in the world do

  224. these verses.

  225. Have to do with me?

  226. Because it sounds very much like their thing right and

  227. their culture, you know, is Paul's writing specifically to a

  228. group of people talking about two different cultures. What does

  229. that have to do with me? What could I even

  230. get out of this? What would you say? What was

  231. your first instinct?

  232. Well, I think everything in the Bible has application for

  233. us today. It's why it was important enough that God

  234. decided that needs to be in there, So we should

  235. dig in and find out why. Why is it there

  236. for me?

  237. Right?

  238. Because it's here for everybody, not just for them. So

  239. what do you The principle, the general principle. There's two

  240. big principles I think here. One, if you are claiming

  241. to try to teach people to do right, you should

  242. also follow your own own your own teaching right. There's

  243. a lot of people who are willing to step up

  244. and lord it over everybody else and make all kinds

  245. of rules for.

  246. Everybody else as I do.

  247. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I had a significant leader in my

  248. life at one time that had very strict rules about

  249. a certain lifestyle element. But then I went out with

  250. one of his sons and were in his car, and

  251. it turns out the guy who made all those rules

  252. broke all the rules personally. Yeah, And I was shocked

  253. by it.

  254. It was a music thing.

  255. Up until that time. Up until that time, I just

  256. felt like, well, everybody follows the rules, We're all struggling

  257. through this. Okay, I don't like the rule, Okay, but

  258. then when I found out the guy who makes the

  259. rules doesn't follow any of those rules, I thought total

  260. fraud because I'd heard him talk about the reasons why

  261. these are so important and all this stuff, and I'm like,

  262. he's a fraud. And so Paula is saying here, if

  263. you're living a fraudulent life, you're saying one thing but

  264. doing another. You're claiming that you will obey God, but

  265. then you're clearly disobeying him in a certain area. He said,

  266. this is why non believers hate God. Is not that

  267. they hate God, It's that they hate the people who

  268. claim to follow God.

  269. Yeah, and so really it's the topic. You could put

  270. the topic of hypocritical Christians in there.

  271. Oh, that's exactly. That's the first several verses we read

  272. was that, and then the second principle he's talking here about.

  273. So then he decides to get a specific element, which

  274. for the Jewish people in the law, the foundational element

  275. was that the male Jews were circumcised, and that was

  276. a demonstration of a personal physical sacrifice to God, right,

  277. and that this symbolized the covenant that the people of

  278. Israel had with God. And so he's going, Okay, let's

  279. go to this basic element that you all brag about

  280. all the time. Well, here's the issue. You can follow

  281. the rule, specifically the rule, but if your heart is

  282. not towards God, it doesn't matter. So then the heart

  283. is God's initial thing, that's really his thing that he's

  284. going after. So that means that you can have people

  285. who have not gone through that ceremony they have a

  286. right heart with God, and you're gonna have people who

  287. did go through the ceremony who have a bad heart

  288. for God. And so he said the ceremony is just

  289. a symbol, but it's really about what's going on in

  290. your heart. So those are the two big principles. He's

  291. speaking specifically with cultural elements for their circumstance. But you

  292. can take the principles and go, Okay, you know what, Yes,

  293. I should obey God's law, but I shall also do

  294. it with a good heart, right heart towards God.

  295. Yeah.

  296. And by the way, it reminds me very much of

  297. the Sermon on the Mount, you know, when Jesus was

  298. trying to let the Pharisees and the religious leaders know

  299. like they're just as sinful as everybody else, right, And

  300. he says, like, you know, for instance, when he says,

  301. you know, you pride yourselves because you don't commit murder, right,

  302. because that's like a really big sin. But you guys

  303. sin too, in fact, when you call each other fool,

  304. it's what he says. He says, you're just as guilty

  305. if you're on the list. You're on the list, right,

  306. And he says, you know, you pride yourself or not

  307. having adultery committing adultery, but if you look at a

  308. woman and lust after, you commit adultery in your own heart,

  309. and so both sins are still sins, right, right, you're

  310. on the list. And so he's talking about that. And

  311. so it's this idea that when people are condemning others,

  312. they don't realize that they too are condemned. And the

  313. hypocritical Christians a whole different category as well, because the

  314. hypocritical Christian is the one who condemns somebody and then

  315. secretly does it, you know, but they think they do

  316. it in secret, but everybody knows.

  317. Yeah, you know, I've heard multiple things. I think Gandhi

  318. had a minister friend, a Christian friend, and they communicated

  319. all the way to Gandhi's death. They loved each other

  320. as friends, and he commented one time that he felt

  321. like the issue wasn't with Jesus. The issue with was

  322. what the people claimed to be following Jesus. Right, it

  323. was hard to follow Jesus when I look at the

  324. people who follow Jesus. Yeah, and he was kind of

  325. implying it. That's not the quote. I don't remember the

  326. exact quote, but that's the sentiment behind what he had communicated. That,

  327. you know, we do, I think, need to be conscious

  328. of the fact that if we wear Jesus' name, we

  329. represent him period, all the time, at our best moments

  330. and our worst moments. So we need to make sure

  331. that we are putting our best foot forward with the

  332. way that we're choosing to live our life, That we

  333. do the things we say, that we behave the way

  334. that Jesus would behave, That we don't make excuses for

  335. our sins, that we keep a short account with the

  336. people that we are around, that we don't live a

  337. hypocritical life, because he says, it's no wonder the scriptures

  338. say that the Gentiles blasphem the name of God. Because

  339. of you. So even God's aware of the fact that

  340. man sometimes they don't hate God, they hate the followers

  341. of God, and they're like, I just don't even want

  342. to be like that. And I think that this is

  343. maybe the most important thing in this passage for me

  344. today is to be contemplating the idea of does my

  345. life make people feel inspired to say, hey, he has

  346. something I don't have. I want to know the God

  347. he knows, or do they look at me and go

  348. what he claims he has doesn't make any difference at all,

  349. and he's a total fraud, and so I don't need

  350. anything that he has. Right, That's really a big part

  351. of it. Our testimony really does matter. I don't do

  352. it to please people. I do it to please God.

  353. But I'm aware of the impact on people with the

  354. things that I live in my life.

  355. You know, I think it's important for any any of

  356. our listeners to realize that, you know, if you know,

  357. none of us are perfect, right, none of us are perfect.

  358. But it's one thing to be an.

  359. Imperfect Christian and to know it to walk around in

  360. humility and just say, hey, I'm not perfect. I know

  361. I mess up. And then when you encourage others or

  362. talk about others. You know, that's different than what's being

  363. talked about here. Right, what's being talked about here is hypocrisy,

  364. saying do as I say, not as I do. Right,

  365. Here's here's my thought. My thought was, I do I

  366. do funerals, and I've done like over the course of

  367. my career, like eight hundred few and so you know,

  368. sometimes the funeral will call me, and they'll call me

  369. because the family has some connection to church, so they

  370. want a pastor to do a funeral, but they don't

  371. have connection to church enough to have a specific pastor

  372. to call. So the funeral will call me and say, hey,

  373. they want some sort of faith based funeral, so I'll go.

  374. And I'm I kid you not when I say this,

  375. This is just my personal observation, Like from my life.

  376. I would bet you upwards of eighty five to ninety

  377. percent of people will say, yeah, I believe in God personally,

  378. but none of us go to church. And I would

  379. say that of that eighty five to ninety percent who

  380. say that, I would say more than half of them.

  381. So they stopped going to church because of hypocrites.

  382. And so it's like, so we have to understand like

  383. the damage that this causes. I think a lot of

  384. times we're tempted to think that, hey, it's my choice,

  385. my life, you know, my decision. Don't tell me how

  386. to live my life, you know, because everybody you know,

  387. don't don't get into my business. Faith should be private.

  388. But yet the Bible tells us that faith is actually

  389. not private. Faith is actually communal, right, and.

  390. It's personal, it's between you and God, yes, but it's

  391. not private.

  392. No, it's not private at all, right.

  393. And your decisions and the way that you live your

  394. life matter because if you're going to you know, boast

  395. about Christ and invite people to church, and you know

  396. where your church gear on, your on your sweatshirt, and

  397. you're going to do all those different things, and if

  398. you're living a lifestyle that's entirely different, just know this. Hey,

  399. I'm not condemning you because you're an imperfect person, but

  400. you have to realize there is damage that is being

  401. caused for the name of Christ because of it.

  402. Yeah, you know, in the next couple of chapters, Paul,

  403. it's going to say the fact that we're all sinners

  404. is not an excuse, right, So for for a Christian

  405. for somebody who's a follower of Christ who is claiming

  406. the grace of God in their life to go, well,

  407. you know, we're all sinners, so it that's non excuse.

  408. He said, what should He's going to say this in

  409. just a couple chapters. So then what should we just

  410. keep on sinning so that grace will abound? He goes, No,

  411. God forbid. So he's making it clear, we don't use

  412. the fact that we're sinners as an excuse to just

  413. keep misbehaving. Now that you're a godly person, you've been

  414. set free from sin, so stop it, right, that's the thing.

  415. And we should be grieved when we do sin. There

  416. should never be a time when we go, ah, well,

  417. you know, I'm just a sinner. Thank goodness for God's grace.

  418. We should be grieved when we sin. That's a part

  419. of the whole repentance thing, coming back to God, keeping

  420. a short account with God, confessing our sins those things.

  421. That's incredibly important. But the difference is here, the hypocritical

  422. side is hypocrisy does so much more damage. And you

  423. know what, I've never heard I've never one time heard

  424. a person say, you know what my problem is I'm

  425. just a hypocrite. We never think that we're the hypocrites.

  426. We think that other people's behaviors hip it or critical.

  427. We almost never think our own is. And so I

  428. think this is a little bit of a challenge, quite honestly,

  429. to them to measure yourself. Here are you measuring up

  430. to what you're claiming? If you're not measuring up to

  431. what you're claiming, you're probably doing damage to Jesus' testimony

  432. and jesus reputation to the people around you. So whenever

  433. I read these things, I don't come away feeling like, man,

  434. I'm a bum. I come away going am I living

  435. up to what I'm claiming? If I'm not? I just

  436. want to be better. I want to be better, and

  437. through His grace I can be God can empower me

  438. be better. It's not impossible to be a better representation

  439. of Jesus yesterday than I what or tomorrow than I

  440. was yesterday.

  441. Right.

  442. So, yep, yesterday was wrong. Yesterday I misbehaved, I did something.

  443. God forgive me. I don't want that to be who

  444. I am. I want to be more like Jesus. Help

  445. me to be at a representation of you today and

  446. tomorrow and you go forward. God's grace is enough. He'll

  447. carry you through. It's not an excuse. It should inspire

  448. us to go, Hey, if I can hurt Christ's testimony

  449. in reputation in the community, that means I can also

  450. help it.

  451. Yeah.

  452. Right, So there's a flip side to this negative, and

  453. that is if I choose to not be a hypocrite

  454. and I choose to truly be a person on my

  455. word and a person who is honestly living out their

  456. faith and grace and truth, that can be a benefit

  457. to God's reputation in the community. Yeah, the equal response

  458. to the other side.

  459. Yeah, So all those principles are radically true, and we

  460. need to keep in mind at the same time that

  461. the reaction to that challenge should never be try harder,

  462. It should be submit more to Christ. Yes, so try

  463. harder means you have the strength to obey, you know,

  464. and be a better boy or a better girl. And

  465. the bottom line is is like, yeah, we do in

  466. a lot of ways. We can make decisions and we

  467. can make choices, but the reality is is that the

  468. big crime, in my opinion, the big crime of the

  469. church is putting it on the person and saying like

  470. you need to be better, do better, behave, quit it,

  471. stop it. You know you're a bad person. And the

  472. reality is is like, yeah, okay, wait a minute, let's

  473. really get a perspective on here. The reaction isn't try harder.

  474. The reaction is to submit and say, God, I know

  475. I don't have the power to be what you want

  476. me to be. So therefore I submit to you, and

  477. I'm asking you to give me the power and the

  478. strength to say no or to say yes to the

  479. good things. You know, give me the strength to make

  480. the right choices because in my own power, I'm gonna

  481. try really hard, but I'm going to fail. And the

  482. only way I'm not going to fail is if I'm

  483. living in your power.

  484. Right, Yes, Yeah, So there's there's a there's the element

  485. of character, which is always a day, that's a daily,

  486. moment by moment choice. And there's also the element of

  487. total dependence on God's grace to do what we cannot do.

  488. That's right, But I don't expect God to step in

  489. and do something I could do. Right, That's unreasonable, Yeah

  490. for sure. Right. So if I when I'm faced with

  491. a lie right now, I choose to lie. I don't

  492. choose to lie, and I don't necessarily need God to

  493. supernaturally intervene to prevent my lie. I can just choose

  494. to tell the truth. I can. So there is that

  495. character element, and then there's also the total dependence on

  496. God's provision and grace to overcome those things that I

  497. can't possibly overcome my own. And there's kind of this

  498. mutual partnership in this developing the character of Christ in

  499. our life. And that's the struggle. And I think sometimes

  500. when people misunderstand, it's because they've taken the opposite side

  501. of the meaning of what we're trying to say sometimes

  502. on those but I think it's a perpetual struggle. That's

  503. why we're working out our faith, as Paul says in

  504. one of the other books. But at the same time,

  505. His grace is enough, and so that that's we have

  506. to live in that tension all the time.

  507. You know, you use the example of making a choice

  508. to tell a lie. I think the thing that we

  509. hardly ever do with ourselves is to actually ask yourself,

  510. why are you telling the lie?

  511. Why would you tell a lie in the first place.

  512. It's probably more so where you have to go to

  513. God and say, help me change that in my life,

  514. because that's the thing that I don't have the power

  515. to change myself in your strength. Well, that's a good

  516. place to end and we will pick up tomorrow on

  517. the Bible.

  518. Guys,
