  1. Hey, everybody, we're the Bible guys, and if you're just

  2. tuning in recently, just know that we are showing a

  3. little bit of reruns for a few months, and then

  4. we'll be back bigger and better than ever on August

  5. thirty first, because behind the scenes, we're taking a hiatus

  6. to do some very important things.

  7. Yeah, we're building building out a new studio and we've

  8. got some new structure. Super excited about it. So August

  9. thirty first, brand new content. But in the meantime, enjoy

  10. some of our greatest hits.

  11. So, Jeff, Today we're receiving Paul's final instructions as he

  12. finally wraps up his letter to the Church of Rome.

  13. Yeah, he's been wrapping this thing up for a while,

  14. hasn't he. So this is a good preacher. We love

  15. to just close and close and close. And that's what

  16. he's saying, Paul, that's right. So he's Chris and I'm Jeff,

  17. and we're the Bible guys.

  18. So Jeff, Yes, today we're supposed to be doing a draft.

  19. I like I like it when we do these drafts.

  20. Too, So it's uh, I'm just gonna read it how

  21. it's written.

  22. It says today, we're going to do a draft list

  23. of your top tier favorite actors. Think that if they're

  24. in a movie, then you're going to go and see

  25. it just because of the actors. Do rock paper scissors

  26. to see who gets the first pick, and then go

  27. until you each have five actors.

  28. Oh five, okay, just for the sake of just being

  29. on the.

  30. Top of our brains, just for to make it easier,

  31. let's just pick male actors.

  32. Okay, just the top male actors. Okay, just because I can't.

  33. I can't. My brain can't work that hard. Okay.

  34. So one shoot one two three shoot Ready one two three.

  35. Shoot one two three, shoot one two three shoot.

  36. Yes, yes, okay.

  37. So my first one would be My favorite actor is

  38. Harrison Ford.

  39. Okay, that's good. My favorite actor is Tom Hanks.

  40. Oh really?

  41. Yes? Yeah, makes believe it or not. I always am

  42. curious every time I see John Krasinski in a in

  43. a movie or a TV show or something.

  44. I really like him.

  45. Yeah, okay, My second one is Tom Cruise.

  46. I thought you said Tom Cruise was your first one,

  47. Tom Hanks. You said Tom Cruise first.

  48. I did not.

  49. I'm almost positive you did.

  50. We can roll the everybody who's listening is laughing because they.

  51. You said Tom Hanks first.

  52. I read it. I read it.

  53. Yeah, yeah, I don't think you said it right. I'm

  54. gonna go back with him later. Okay, so my number three.

  55. Hey, by the way, I'm now speaking to Jeff listening later.

  56. Got you.

  57. That's not true. We didn't roll it back yet.

  58. No, I know. I'm talking to you like a week

  59. from now.

  60. Yeah, yeah, okay, well we'll see, okay, let me see.

  61. Let me see. Who's the guy who did the Born series,

  62. Mad Dame Mad Damon, Yeah.

  63. Matt Damon. Okay, Uh, he's on my list as well.

  64. I'm gonna say Denzel.

  65. Oh I love Denzel oh Man. Okay, so what are

  66. we at now? Number three?

  67. Number four? So number four?

  68. Uh, anytime I see who, I want to watch that movie? Ah, dude,

  69. I don't watch movies often enough to know. Uh, well,

  70. we're doing a lot of action movies, aren't we, So

  71. we should change Kevin Costner.

  72. Yeah, he's on the back end.

  73. But yeah, but you know all time, like like I

  74. like to draft day, hey, like some of those machines machine.

  75. He's doing a thing on Yellowstone.

  76. Now called Yellowstone.

  77. It's in Yellowstone Park. Oh he's yes, he's narrated Yellowstone

  78. I think that'd be right off your head.

  79. Thought you're talking about the TV show.

  80. Oh no, okay, okay. So my other, my fourth one

  81. would be Paul Rudd.

  82. Oh that's a good one.

  83. I love.

  84. Yeah, Paul Rudd, he's good. Let me see.

  85. And then this is the last man.

  86. So this is the last one.

  87. Out of all of the people. See, I would have

  88. done Tom Hanks. Uh, let me see. I can't think

  89. of it. I can't think of one.

  90. How about if I give you four or five, you

  91. can choose, probably Robert de Niro, Anthony Hopkins, Sean Connery,

  92. Leonardo DiCaprio, Jacky Nicholson, Will Smith.

  93. Actually Jack Black. Jack Black's the one I'm gonna pick

  94. for my fifth draft choice.

  95. Oh gosh, that's so great.

  96. After I read like the greatest actors of all time,

  97. you're like Jack Black in the moment, all right, out

  98. of that remaining because I wrote down like ten actors

  99. that I liked, I'm and I have this list, by

  100. the way, from something else. I'm gonna say that the

  101. one I'm gonna choose is very hard. But I'm actually

  102. gonna say Will Smith.

  103. Oh wow, yeah, Will Smith. So he's my fifth.

  104. I'm going to take one big step back from you.

  105. Stay out of arms reach.

  106. I don't mimic his slab pay well.

  107. I don't know. I'm just afraid.

  108. Now. Christian is great.

  109. He's a good actor.

  110. Yeah, yes, very good.

  111. Well today we're going to wrap up the Book of

  112. Romans in the letter that Paul is writing to the

  113. church he's never been to and he's giving final instructions.

  114. Okay, so well let's just pick up here because remember

  115. yesterday we talked about how he's not taking shots at

  116. other Christians, right, right, But he does say this, and

  117. then this is why we stopped, he says. And now

  118. I make one more appeal, My dear brothers and sisters,

  119. watch out for people who cause divisions and upset people's

  120. faith by teaching things contrary to what you've been taught.

  121. Stay away from them. Such people are not serving Christ,

  122. our Lord. They are serving their own personal interests. By

  123. smooth talk and glowing words, they deceive innocent people. But

  124. everyone knows that you are obedient to the Lord, and

  125. this makes me very happy. I want you to be

  126. wise and doing right and to stay innocent. Of any wrong.

  127. The God of Peace will soon crush Satan under your feet.

  128. May the grace of our Lord Jesus be with you. Timothy,

  129. my fellow worker, sends you his greetings, as do Lucius,

  130. Jason Suscipator, and my fellow Jews. I Tertius, the one

  131. writing this letter for Paul, send my greetings too, is

  132. one of the Lord's followers.

  133. I love that he slipped that in.

  134. I love it in between Paul sentences, Yeah.

  135. Exactly, I'm going to say I too. He's never mentioned me,

  136. he never even said my name. I'm gonna let you

  137. know I'm writing there for you. Gais says hello to you.

  138. He's my host and also serves as host to the

  139. whole church. Erastus, the city Treasurer, sends you his greetings,

  140. and so does our brother Cordus. Now all glory to God,

  141. who's able to make you strong. Just as my good

  142. News says this message about Jesus, Christ has revealed his

  143. plan for you gentiles, a plan kept secret from the

  144. beginning of time. But now, as the Prophet's foretold and

  145. as the eternal God is commanded, this message is made

  146. known to all gentiles everywhere, so that they too might

  147. believe and obey him. All glory to the only Wise

  148. God through Jesus Christ forever.

  149. Amen.

  150. Amen.

  151. I love that.

  152. So there's some some belief or some indication that Paul

  153. had a lot of trouble with his eyesight, and so

  154. he used writers because if you remember in some of

  155. the other epistles that he uh said or that he

  156. wrote at the end, he'd say, hey, now you can

  157. see I'm signing this in my own handwriting.

  158. Look how big it is?

  159. Right.

  160. He mentioned that a couple of times Galatians. Yeah, that

  161. he's signing with his own hand and his big So

  162. I love how the Book of Romans ends. It's just

  163. and I think the Holy Spirit just allowed it. It's

  164. a giggle in the Bible where what's the name Gaeish goes,

  165. I'm signing.

  166. My name too, I can't read it.

  167. That's so funny.

  168. It's just the best.

  169. Yeah. And uh and so the beginning, the beginning, and of.

  170. Course Paul's covered this topic and so many other parts

  171. of his you know, the other book that he's written.

  172. But he talks about false teachers. He talks about.

  173. Those teaching contrary to what you know, and he says,

  174. stay away from them. So there's no there's not a

  175. new thought to say stay away from false teachers.

  176. But then I love how.

  177. He expands and says, such people are not serving Christ,

  178. our Lord, and they are serving their own personal interests

  179. by smooth talking, glowing words that deceive innocent people.

  180. And you know, it's.

  181. Interesting how there are people who not just preachers, not

  182. just famous people, not just people with titles, right, you know,

  183. I mean, obviously people with titles who try to manipulate

  184. and say send your money in and all these different

  185. things that we've.

  186. Seen in the past.

  187. But even I think there's a group of Christians I

  188. think that seem to somehow.

  189. I don't know how to say this.

  190. I should have thought more before I spoke, But have

  191. you ever met a person who seems to leverage Christianity

  192. to make themselves look better? Like they come and they

  193. play church and they play godly and they make themselves

  194. look better.

  195. And it just sort of reminds me of that group

  196. of people too. They don't really love God somebody, they

  197. love how they look when.

  198. They're you're saying, somebody who's clearly pursuing celebrity Christianity, Yeah, maybe.

  199. That's a good way to say, look at me, pay

  200. attention to me. And I know that's not the warning,

  201. that's not the warning.

  202. He's warnering false doctrine.

  203. But there are Christians or people who claim to be Christians,

  204. who are really very self centered.

  205. And that's what I thought of what you said through

  206. smooth talk and selfishness and deceitfulness. I thought, you know,

  207. there really is a subculture of every once in a while,

  208. you'll run into that type of person. And I think

  209. that it's important to realize that there are broken people

  210. that walk into churches, right, And so when you run

  211. into somebody like that.

  212. It doesn't mean the church is bad, right, And it also.

  213. Doesn't mean that whenever you see a bad preacher who

  214. teaches false doctrine and tries to get monetary gain, it

  215. doesn't mean that the whole church is bad. It just

  216. means that, listen, this world is filled with broken people. Yeah,

  217. and you and I are going to make mistakes.

  218. There's bad school teachers, there's bad coaches, there's bad politicians,

  219. there's bad bakers, there's bad chefs. That's right, right, And

  220. yet that doesn't turn us off from going back to

  221. a baker. I'm going to stop and have another donut

  222. when I want one, You know what I mean, Just

  223. because there are some bad people out in the world

  224. doesn't give us the justifications just totally shut off the world.

  225. But that's a word that I think a lot of

  226. people probably need to hear.

  227. Yeah, but he is telling us here, where's it, he says,

  228. He's telling us to them to be careful about being wise.

  229. Oh yeah, yeah.

  230. Here in verse nineteen, he says, but everyone knows that

  231. you're obedient to Lord. This makes me very happy. I

  232. want you to be why in doing right and to

  233. stay innocent of any wrong right. And this should be

  234. our goal. A lot of us we want to be

  235. wise on all the bad and the evil stuff. Why

  236. do we get sucked to the bad headlines in the news?

  237. Why do we get sucked into the bad stories and

  238. the bad podcasts, you know, and all the murder and

  239. all the rape and all of the bad things that

  240. are happening in the world. And he said, man, that's

  241. just our nature. Our nature is to move towards all

  242. the bad headlines. And he said, listen, what I want

  243. you to be someone should be innocent, man, You run

  244. towards innocence.

  245. Keep your mind clean and pure, don't.

  246. Get distracted by all these bad things, and instead focus

  247. on those things that are good. And then he says,

  248. the God of peace right will soon crush, stating on

  249. his feet.

  250. So, hey, the.

  251. God of peace, he'll give you peace when you choose innocence.

  252. You choose keep an innocent mind, and God will crush.

  253. The evil one.

  254. That's what he's saying, right, And so you know, we

  255. don't have to run around constantly diving headfirst into all

  256. the bad that's going on in the world. Instead, lets

  257. us bee innocence as much as possible. We don't have

  258. to be informed on that and let God deal with

  259. it instead.

  260. Yeah, and I think that it's also really cool that

  261. Paul uses the word wise to be wise. So you

  262. know that the word wisdom in the Bible that in

  263. the Old Testament they refer to wisdom as.

  264. A her as a personality.

  265. Yeah.

  266. Yeah, it says whoever gains wisdom and finds her has

  267. has done a great thing.

  268. So wisdom is held up.

  269. As something that is to be desired above almost anything else.

  270. And to use wisdom is something that is just unbelievable.

  271. And I remember hearing a story actually hang on a

  272. sermon series. And by the way, when I went down,

  273. so I lived in Georgia and I drove forty five

  274. minutes north and I went to Andy Stanley's church, North

  275. Point Church. And it was actually originally the series was

  276. called Don't Be a Fool and had like a Jester's

  277. hat and all the people in the parking lot had

  278. jester hats, right, But then it eventually when it got released,

  279. they said that was a negative thing, and so they

  280. changed it to what is the wise thing to do?

  281. And the whole series was based on asking that question.

  282. So think about this the next time you're in a

  283. situation where you're wondering whether or not it's a.

  284. Good idea to do A or B.

  285. You're like, should I do A or should I be

  286. safe and do B? Just ask yourself, Okay, what's the

  287. wise thing to do? And wisdom will dictate the answer.

  288. A lot of times. It doesn't have to be Oh

  289. is there reverse for that? You know what I mean?

  290. What it could be is like asking that question brings

  291. about everything.

  292. It's all encompassing.

  293. It brings about godly principle, it brings about earthly consequence,

  294. it brings about just practicality. It also brings about commandments,

  295. it brings about just about everything, and just say, what

  296. is the wise thing to do? I think that wisdom

  297. is something to be desired. After all, Remember when God

  298. asked Solomon and said, I'll give you one thing, what

  299. do you want?

  300. Like a magic genie? Right? Think about that?

  301. If God whether the one like a genie that says,

  302. what would you desire us all?

  303. And says wisdom?

  304. And God says, because you have asked for this, I'm

  305. going to make you the wisest man who's ever lived.

  306. And nobody before you and nobody after you will ever

  307. ever be as wise as you.

  308. And I'll give you all the other things. I'll give

  309. you peace in your land, I'll give you wealth, I'll

  310. give you right I sparre to all those other things,

  311. because that's where all that comes from, is from wisdom. Right,

  312. So God gave it to him.

  313. Yeah, it's pretty amazing.

  314. Yeah, it's really interesting.

  315. So there isn't an issue here. I think that we

  316. should bring up.

  317. Some Christians run around pointing out the problems in everybody else,

  318. and Paul warns against that, and some Christians have exactly

  319. the flip side. Oh, everybody's wonderful. Everything's wonderful. We just

  320. accept everything right. And Paul kind of splits the difference here,

  321. and so Paul just spent a chapter and a half saying, man,

  322. you guys are great, My friends are great. All the

  323. stuff that's going on, and the Kingdom of God is great,

  324. all the churches are greeting you.

  325. This is all great.

  326. And then he pauses and says, oh, hey, by the way,

  327. be really careful because there's some bad guys out there too.

  328. So Paul isn't on the side of everybody's bad. He

  329. spends way more time in all of his letters complimenting

  330. and saying good about all the godly people than he

  331. does anything bad. But he's not on the other side

  332. where everything is good and that there's nothing to watch

  333. out for. And so he is saying, even in your

  334. Christian world, the world that you're living in, there are

  335. people who are false teachers, and you got to watch

  336. out for that false teaching. And the only way that

  337. you can really do that is to know what is true.

  338. You don't study falsehood to know what's false, because there's

  339. so many ways to make something false. You study truth, right,

  340. and because falsehood is always a deviation from the truth.

  341. As a matter of fact, it's almost like falsehood's not

  342. a thing.

  343. Truth is.

  344. And then falsehood is a reflection of a bad reflection

  345. of a truth, right right, right, And so so you

  346. study the truth, you get the best way to know

  347. what is false is to spend a substantial amount of

  348. time in the truth. And then the Bible says that

  349. God will use this Holy Spirit to teach you what

  350. is true. And then God also uses other believers around

  351. you to remind you of what is true. So the believers,

  352. your pastors, your other leaders, your other Christian friends that

  353. are also astute at knowing what is true in scripture,

  354. they can remind you of what is true. The Holy

  355. Spirit convinces you of what is true, and God's word

  356. is true. And so that's where if we spend our

  357. time there, then we don't have to worry about studying

  358. all the falsehoods. We can clearly know what is true

  359. from God's word.

  360. Yeah, you know what that you know, that reminds me

  361. of earlier when you said, Paul spent so many chapters

  362. saying these are good people. You know, everything's good, but

  363. you know the strong warning is beware of the bad

  364. but it had to be there because it's a danger.

  365. But yet that wasn't the heart of the focus.

  366. That's like verses I think five verses.

  367. So you know what it reminds me of is that

  368. think about football. So you love football? I love football.

  369. Can you imagine if two football teams playing against each

  370. other on the on the field spent all their time

  371. concentrating on the penalties you're right, as opposed to as

  372. opposed to, like, okay.

  373. Let's make sure not to do the penalties guys, right, right, But.

  374. That will free us up to having a fantastic, joyful, meaningful,

  375. wonderful experience of playing this game that we all know

  376. and love.

  377. So you focus on the heart of the game.

  378. You can't win a game if the only thing you

  379. do is practice not committing a penalty. Right.

  380. You have to have plays so to move the ball.

  381. That's how you win the game.

  382. So the Christians, the Christians who are walking around just

  383. pointing out everything bad, they're like, really bad refs that

  384. won't allow the players to play the game right.

  385. And you know it's so funny.

  386. Nobody nobody gets at the end of a game and says,

  387. oh man, I'll tell you what, man, it was so

  388. good how we didn't commit past.

  389. Interference exactly, like did you see that one play? Man?

  390. We didn't commit past interference. And it reminds me of

  391. the church that I grew up in. Honestly, it felt

  392. like it felt like everything was about.

  393. You better not, you better not, you better not, you

  394. better not. Watch out, don't do this. You kind of

  395. did that. Oh you hit it toward that. Don't do that.

  396. It's so evil and it's it's like I spent so

  397. much time in that denomination just talking about the rules

  398. and the heaviness and the evil and the you're such

  399. a loser, and it's like, yeah, you sure you ran

  400. ten yards, you know, but if you were better, you

  401. could have run twenty.

  402. You know. It was just that's the way it felt.

  403. And it's like I had to spend honestly, like ten

  404. years of my life under that kind of mindset to

  405. realize there's a better way, there's a better way to live.

  406. Like rules are just as important now for me, They're

  407. just as important.

  408. Yeah, I get to you know. I went to the

  409. Pro Bowl just this past week weekend.

  410. Two weekends ago, I went to Las Vegas where they

  411. played the Pro Bowl, and everybody thought that it was

  412. going to be terrible because it was only flag football, right,

  413. you're talking about people like, Oh, that's gonna be terrible.

  414. Wound up being fun to watch.

  415. It was fun to watch because they had so much

  416. fun without helmet. You can see the joy in their faces.

  417. And what was happening is they're all a hot dog

  418. in two just a show off game.

  419. And it didn't matter, which means it was so fun.

  420. You know, they did these plays, you know, and somebody

  421. would run and dive and then everybody just starts cracking up.

  422. They were belly rolling and they were picking each other

  423. up and laughing. And I'm thinking, man, you never see

  424. that happen because you can't even see the players faces, right,

  425. and you could see the joy of the game, And

  426. it's like, that's what we're talking about here, Paul is saying.

  427. Paul is saying, No, when the church functions and it

  428. runs on all cylinders, it's supposed to be the closest

  429. thing this side of heaven.

  430. So you were not You weren't watching the broadcast. You

  431. were in the stands, so you didn't know this. The

  432. commentators got really hung up, and because there were you

  433. know what three games, right, they played three games. Yeah,

  434. the commentators got really hung up in one of the

  435. games that the refs kept calling penalties when the when

  436. the quarterback would run outside the box and then move

  437. the ball down the field in an illegal way. Well,

  438. it turns out they couldn't do that play in the box,

  439. but they could do that play outside the box.

  440. That was the rules.

  441. But for whatever reason, the refs kept calling it the

  442. other way to play, to run that play. They kept

  443. calling that blowing the whistle. Now they were consistent with it,

  444. they called it every time, But the commentators got hung

  445. up on the rule, and it kind of got tedious

  446. listening to them because I'm watching all the players.

  447. They didn't care. They were having fun. They were moving

  448. the ball down the field. There's only what a forty

  449. yard field the field they was.

  450. So their bombing, They're running like crazy stuff. The players,

  451. the joy on their face and the fun that they

  452. were having moving the ball all and trying to score

  453. was way better than the commentators getting hung up on

  454. the fact that the refs.

  455. Were So I had an entirely different experience than you.

  456. Yeah, yeah, yeah, it was the middle game. It was

  457. the middle game.

  458. Yeah yeah, yeah, I'm they're live, you're at home, and

  459. you're hearing. All you're hearing is all the focus on

  460. the rules.

  461. So now the commentators weren't wrong, the commentators were right correct,

  462. But the players were just playing the game that was

  463. being called, and so they played within those rules, and deep.

  464. Down inside, whether you knew it or not, what you

  465. wanted to say is can we just stop talking.

  466. And can I just flag football game?

  467. Can I just enjoy the game?

  468. Yeah? Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah yeah.

  469. So the obsession with the rules in that moment kind

  470. of took away from the joy of the goofy game.

  471. Yeah yeah, right, which I didn't.

  472. I didn't, which, by the way, I think I should

  473. announce to our listeners that we happen to stumble upon

  474. sitting right next to Ed McCaffrey, Christian McCaffrey's oh yeah, yeah,

  475. a father who played for the Denver Broncos with John

  476. Elway as wife, received with Lisa McCaffrey, and so the

  477. we sat like three seats away from us, and eventually

  478. we moved toward them, and for like sixty minutes we

  479. were sitting right next to the fun They talked to

  480. us the whole time.

  481. Yeah, Christian's great, great football player too.

  482. So anyways, that's a good place to wrap up.

  483. Don't so the rules are important, right, but don't make

  484. the rules. Don't let the rules take away the joy

  485. of what we're all about.

  486. That's right, that's right. So we will see you next

  487. time on the Bible, guys,
