  1. So, Jeff, remember yesterday how I said the Gladiator quote

  2. about Roman citizenship.

  3. Yes, I might have gett a little ahead of myself.

  4. Well, this is a very exciting story and it's all

  5. running together.

  6. Yeah, I thought we were going to actually include that.

  7. Well today the only thing that the really crowd knows

  8. is that he's a Jewish person, right, that's right, And

  9. now today he's going to actually launch into the Roman

  10. citizenship part of.

  11. His Yeah, but as soon as he brings that up,

  12. he turns into a hot potato. Nobody wants to touch

  13. you after that point. So that's what we're talking about.

  14. He's Chris and I'm Jeff, and we're the Bible guys.

  15. So, mister Jeff, we have given to us. They're calling

  16. it this or.

  17. That, this or that.

  18. What would you rather pick?

  19. Okay, so here's the first question, fun and then we

  20. just needed to talk about it, you know, whether we

  21. have commonality or.

  22. I haven't read any of these I have not ever

  23. seen them, so either.

  24. The first one said, when visiting a new place, would

  25. you rather have a tour guide or be your own

  26. tour guide and then find things slash places yourself.

  27. I'd rather be my own tour guide. Yeah, I think.

  28. It depends on where you are. I think in Israel,

  29. like we're going to Israel in a couple of months,

  30. I think that it's absolutely necessary to have your own

  31. tour guide. I saw the value of it last time when.

  32. I went in nine.

  33. Yeah, but I would say other than that, I would

  34. probably want to be my own tour guide.

  35. Yeah. It depends on how much time you have. Like

  36. I love to when I travel, I like always everywhere

  37. we go by a lonely planet guide. So there's a

  38. guide there, and it's time to eat at these restaurants,

  39. check these places out, here's how much it costs for

  40. that museum, whatever. But I would rather not have somebody

  41. because the other side of it is those guides always

  42. want to take you to their cousin's shop to go

  43. buy souvenirs. Right, there's kind of this thing so frustrates me.

  44. But I was just in Luxor, Egypt, about a month

  45. and a half ago, and you know, there's the Valley

  46. of the Kings where King Tut's tomb is, and there's

  47. Luxor Temple and Karnak Temple all that kind of stuff.

  48. But we only had one day, Right, we only had

  49. one day. Well, at that point, there's so much to

  50. cover that we decided let's hire a professional guide. And

  51. he just gave us the height We said, hey, we

  52. want to do these five things, just give us the highlights.

  53. And it was perfect because he had a very precise

  54. knowledge of how far away things were and how much

  55. time we could spend in each place. And he did

  56. a great job. That was fantastic. So on that day

  57. when we were really tight, using a guide was good.

  58. That's cool.

  59. Yeah, but normally I'd rather do it myself.

  60. Okay.

  61. Number two, if you had a free cruise, would you

  62. rather go to Alaska or the Caribbean?

  63. Alaska?

  64. Me too?

  65. Yeah, well only because I've been to the Caribbean several times.

  66. Oh I haven't, and and it's a bucket list for

  67. me to see the northern lights.

  68. Oh yeah I have. I haven't. I haven't been to Alaska.

  69. Yeah, and I would.

  70. I mean I haven't been to Caribbean either. Yeah.

  71. Yeah. So number three, well, hey, hey I've been somewhere

  72. you haven't.

  73. Yeah, yeah, I haven't.

  74. No. I love that. Number three.

  75. Would you rather live on the East coast or live

  76. on the West coast?

  77. Two?

  78. Right, right?

  79. So all of our listeners in California and in Jersey

  80. are like, oh, thanks, man, man, I would rather.

  81. It's like asking all that, would you rather live in

  82. Michigan or Indiana?

  83. Right, it's true, you're right, okay, but you got to choose.

  84. Would you question East Coast? I think so too, But

  85. it's only because I feel like everybody who lives in

  86. the West Coast.

  87. It's in another way if I feel like they're on

  88. a different planet. I really do. I feel like it's

  89. like it's like I love it.

  90. I've been to California several times, but it seems so

  91. far removed from the reality in which I love and live, right,

  92. it just seems like, you know, I know it's only

  93. a plane ride away, but still all right, how about.

  94. This one number four? If you could time track?

  95. Oh this is a good Would you rather be able

  96. to experience the past or to experience and see the

  97. future the past? Why you can get a sports almanac.

  98. That you give it yourself? Yeah, yeah, exactly. Uh No,

  99. I think, uh the future is an adventure to me,

  100. But I've read so much about the past I'd like

  101. to go see it. So I like the mystery of

  102. what's happening tomorrow.

  103. Okay, all right, I think I think my answer is

  104. also the past, but not because I'm fascinated with all

  105. of my reading and information of the past. I think

  106. it's because I I would want to affect the future.

  107. But that's really not the question.

  108. Was It's not the question.

  109. Oh yeah, okay, would you rather just experience experiencing them?

  110. Okay, then I'm.

  111. Sorry, I'm changing my answer. Yeah, I'm going to go

  112. to the future.

  113. Go to the future, yeah, okay, okay.

  114. Yeah, just just to know it's and then I can

  115. come back to the president and be like invest in.

  116. Crypto. Right, So there it is, So here we go.

  117. So I think I think we can put that one

  118. to Ben. I like that. I like the would you rather?

  119. Yeah? Those are fun? Those are fun? So those are

  120. those are the four questions?

  121. That's it. So, I mean, I could invent my own

  122. if you want. You ready for this?

  123. I was when I was a youth pastor. We actually

  124. had a book put out by Doug Fields called.

  125. Would you Rather?

  126. And I only remember a few of them, but I

  127. would ask my youth group, which is high school students

  128. in middle school all the time these questions. You know,

  129. there's also like you know, would you rather freeze to

  130. death or burned to death?

  131. Those kind of.

  132. Questions we have to die, right right?

  133. But my, but my, one that I always asked was

  134. would you rather have your hand nibbled on by a cannibal?

  135. Or would you rather eat a Hamberger in front of

  136. a starving child?

  137. That's terrible.

  138. This is a terrible question.

  139. Terrible.

  140. That's probably why I remember them.

  141. Yeah, man, well both of those are bad choices. Yes,

  142. I think if nobody is watching I eat a hamburger.

  143. Terrible, Jeff, terrible. I know. No matter no matter what

  144. you choose, you lose, right Yeah.

  145. Yeah, So I mean if if you have to choose

  146. between hurting somebody or hurting yourself, well then you choose

  147. to let the cannibal nibble.

  148. Actually I messed that question up, not that anybody cares,

  149. but I'm going to tell you anyway.

  150. Okay, I mixed two of them up.

  151. Oh no, no, it was supposed to be would you

  152. rather eat a hamburger in front of a starving child?

  153. Or kick a puppy?

  154. Oh yeah, you asked me that one before.

  155. Yeah, yeah, And then the hand on the cannibal?

  156. Uh? One was would you rather get your hand nibble

  157. by a cannibal or get poked in the eye with

  158. a hot poker.

  159. Oh yeah, nibbled, yes, an easy one. Yeah yeah, Okay,

  160. it's so weird.

  161. I can't help what I read.

  162. I'm glad the desert is the one who picks these

  163. normal questions.

  164. I agree. I agree. So we're nine chapter twenty two.

  165. Okay, yeah, and Paul has you know again, he's been

  166. carried away from the mob by the Romans. He pleads

  167. to the crowd, he gives them his story, slips in

  168. the gospel, yeah, and identifies and builds common ground. And

  169. then he's continuing.

  170. So you know, we've spent some time in some of

  171. the letters Paul wrote, and they're pretty theological, right, So

  172. we've had a lot of these daily devotions where it's

  173. just theology. And then you know, we pivot. Now we're

  174. in this narrative. There's this storyline going, and the stories

  175. are for our example. So then what we're looking for

  176. when you read a story in the Bible is not

  177. what is the theology of that story. What you're looking

  178. for is what is the example to me in this story?

  179. And so we'll just pick up in verse twenty four

  180. and read on through chapter twenty three, verse eleven, He

  181. says the commander brought Paul inside and ordered him lash

  182. with whips to make him confess his crime. He wanted

  183. to find out why the crowd had become so furious

  184. when they tied Paul down to lash, and Paul said

  185. to the officer, standing, there is for you to whip

  186. a Roman citizen who hasn't even been tried. When the

  187. officer heard this, he went to the commander and asked,

  188. what are you doing? This man is a Roman citizen.

  189. So the commander went over and asked, Paul, tell me,

  190. are you a Roman citizen. Yes, I certainly am, Paul replied,

  191. I am too. The commander muttered, and it cost me plenty.

  192. Paul answered, but I am a citizen by birth. The

  193. soldiers who were about to interrogate Paul quickly withdrew when

  194. they heard he was a Roman citizen, and the commander

  195. was frightened because he'd ordered him bound and whipped. The

  196. Next day, the commander ordered the leading priests into session

  197. with the Jewish High Council. He wanted to find out

  198. what the trouble was all about, so he released Paul

  199. to have him stand before them, gazing intently at the

  200. High Council, Paul began, brothers, I've always lived before God

  201. with a clear conscience. Instantly, ANNONI as the high priests,

  202. commanded them those close to Paul to slap him in

  203. the mouth. But Paul said to him, God will slap you,

  204. you corrupt hypocrite. What kind of judge are you to

  205. break the law yourself by ordering me struck like that?

  206. Tho was standing. Paul said to him, do you dare

  207. to insult God's High Priest? I'm sorry, brothers, I didn't

  208. realize he was the high priest. Paul replied, for the

  209. scriptures say you must not speak evil of any of

  210. your rulers. Paul realized that some members of the High

  211. Council were Sadducees and some were Pharisees, so he shouted, brothers,

  212. I'm a Pharisee, as were my ancestors, and I am

  213. on trial because my hope is in the resurrection of

  214. the dead. This divided the council, the Pharisees against the Sadducees,

  215. for the Sadducees say there is no resurrection or angels

  216. or spirits, but the Pharisees believe in all these things.

  217. So there was a great uproar. Some of the teachers

  218. of religious law, who were pharisees, jumped up and began

  219. to argue forcefully, we see nothing wrong with him, and

  220. they shouted, perhaps the spirit and Angel spoke to him.

  221. As the conflict grew more violent, the commander was afraid

  222. they would tear Paul apart, so he ordered his soldiers

  223. to go and rescue him by force and take you

  224. back to the fortress. That night, the Lord appeared to

  225. Paul and said, be encouraged, Paul. Just as you have

  226. been a witness to me here in Jerusalem, you must

  227. preach the good news in Rome as well.

  228. Right as if as if there wasn't enough ruckus going on.

  229. Here that you know that he just rolls a grenade

  230. in the middle of the room. Oh, by the way,

  231. I'm a pharisee.

  232. Yeah, and uh, you know it's so great because if

  233. you think about what Paul is doing here, Paul is

  234. first of all, he let himself start to get whipped, right,

  235. so Paul could have easily said I'm a Roman citizen

  236. before they threw the first lash.

  237. So what is he doing.

  238. He's putting them in the spot on purpose. Yes, he's like, oh,

  239. by the way, I'm a Roman citizen. So now it

  240. says the commander's fearing. The commander is fearful.

  241. And then and then then he's when he notices that

  242. some are Pharisees and Sadducees. What does he do?

  243. He says the perfect sentence to cause uproar and so

  244. that they're divided. And he knew their theology and he

  245. knew by saying what he said, it was going to

  246. cause them to be divided.

  247. So Paul is throwing.

  248. Grenades everywhere, which is great, and he calls Anonius a

  249. hypocrite until he finds out that he he's Antonius.

  250. And then I think there's a big lesson there for

  251. us when he finds out the Anonius is the high priest.

  252. At that point he backpedaled just a little bit, you know.

  253. So he thought this was just some common guy that

  254. was being a jerk to him, right, and so he

  255. was kind of infuriated by the bad treatment. But then

  256. he realized this is the high priest who has authority,

  257. and then he backpedaled, Oh wait, I should have been

  258. more respectful. And you know, sometimes we can we don't

  259. respect the person, but we should always respect the office, right,

  260. And that's that's what you guys talked about it in Romans.

  261. You know, God is the one who ordains our leaders,

  262. and so hey, if that's the leader that's in charge,

  263. then we should at least respect that office. And he

  264. does that. But he's perpetually just stirring the pot. And

  265. it was I think he did that with the with

  266. the Pharisees and the Sadducees because he knew this wasn't

  267. going to go anywhere. This is not the goal anyways, right,

  268. He's trying to get to Rome. And so there's not

  269. a sense that hey if this, if I go through

  270. a full trial with these With the Sanhedrin, he was

  271. a member probably of the Sanhedron, or at least he

  272. was probably at least a clerk for the Sanhedrin, and

  273. so he knew the ins and outs. This is like

  274. trying to take a defense attorney to trial. It's going

  275. to be a month, two months. This is gonna be

  276. a long thing, and it's going to be useless. It's

  277. probably gonna be a hung jury anyways. Because he knows

  278. the intricacies of this court and he knows it's not

  279. going to get him what he needs. And so that's

  280. why he appeals and goes, hey, by the way, I'm

  281. a Roman citizen. Roman citizens could not be punished without

  282. a trial, and not not only without a trial, without

  283. being convicted in the trial, and the whole process for

  284. a Roman citizen was much more complicated than it would

  285. have been for a subject of Rome. And so then

  286. this soldier says is Commanders goes, oh, yeah, I'm a

  287. citizen too. I bought my citizenship. Paul goes, yeah, I

  288. was born a citizen. And the difference in the quality

  289. of citizenship between a guy who buys it versus a

  290. guy who was born it was this really intimidated this guy.

  291. And so the whole thing's just the mess for everybody involved, right,

  292. which really kind of lets you know, none of this

  293. should have ever happened anyways, right, right, This is just

  294. the This is just evil that's happening, and Paul's trying

  295. to navigate through as best you can.

  296. Yeah, well, Paul, I mean, what's Paul's crime. Preaching the

  297. Gospel and inviting gentiles and Jews to receive the good news?

  298. That's his crime.

  299. That's right, that's right.

  300. And so.

  301. I want to point out also that I'm going to

  302. ask you a question, Jeff, put you on the spot.

  303. Verse number eleven, it says that night the Lord capital

  304. l appeared to Paul and said, be encouraged, Paul, just

  305. as you've been a witness to me and jerusalemus preaching

  306. good news in Rome as well.

  307. What it says the Lord appeared to him.

  308. It's the same question I have and acts chapter number

  309. whatever it is, you know, eighteen or so or whatever,

  310. during the plagues of Egypt, where it says, you know,

  311. people always say the Angel of Death came down and

  312. went through and killed the firstborns and the land of

  313. the post, but the scripture doesn't say that. The scripture

  314. actually says the God said.

  315. I will come down. I will come down and come through.

  316. And so it says when it says the Lord appeared,

  317. I'm thinking, Okay, is this God the Father? Is this

  318. the Lord as in Jesus has appeared before him again,

  319. or or is it him sending an angel And he's

  320. just saying the Lord appeared, But it's as if the

  321. Lord appeared because he's sending an angel.

  322. Yeah, I think uh luke is pretty because remember this

  323. isn't Paul telling the story. This is Luke telling the story.

  324. Luke is pretty tight on when it's an angel, right,

  325. an angel came and sat Peter free while he was

  326. in the in the jail. He's really tight on that.

  327. And then when it's not, then I think he would

  328. have said it was an angel if it was an angel.

  329. So here I think he's talking about Jesus, is what

  330. I think I think Paul is said. I think Luke

  331. is saying that Paul spent time with Jesus there and

  332. that Jesus came and told Paul You're going to go

  333. to Rome.

  334. So if you think about that, that's pretty awesome, Yeah,

  335. because it doesn't normally we would just hear that and

  336. be like, oh cool, he heard a word from the Lord.

  337. But he didn't say that. It says he appeared to him.

  338. And so just the idea that Paul would go through

  339. all of that and then spend time face to face

  340. with Jesus is pretty incredible.

  341. You know, it changes the whole visual, doesn't it.

  342. Yeah? Yeah?

  343. And uh, and by the way, Luke was a doctor

  344. by profession, right, right, so he was very he was

  345. precision oriented.

  346. Uh.

  347. You know when you say he was pretty tight. It's

  348. because his whole life was that way.

  349. Right, right, he was very detailed.

  350. Yeah, and one of the just as an aside, archaeologists

  351. and historians would say Luke is one of the most

  352. precise ancient historians that exist. Even even we're talking about

  353. historians that aren't Christians, would say, there aren't very many,

  354. if any Oh, this is two days in a row.

  355. Yeah, very exciting. Wow, I think it's Dusty in here?

  356. Is this a new segment?

  357. Now, I'm just kidding, it's not Dustin there. I don't

  358. know why. It's easy.

  359. Yeah. So anyways, he's a very precise historian, and that

  360. kind of I think is one of the reasons why

  361. it Also it refers to be encouraged Paul. Just as

  362. you've been a witness to me here in Jerusalem, you

  363. must preach the good news in Rome as well. But

  364. he says, you've been a witness to me, right, So

  365. he's saying, this is I think Jesus talking, because Paul

  366. never was, you know, testified of an angel. He always

  367. was testifying of what Jesus did in his life. So yeah,

  368. and this is a unique moment. We don't see this

  369. happening in Paul's life all the time, right, right, Paul

  370. had the engagement with Jesus on the road to Damascus.

  371. He spent three years in the Arabian Peninsula being taught

  372. by Jesus according to the Book of the Galatians, and then

  373. this encounter here they seem to be the three with Jesus.

  374. So it wasn't all the time, but this was. And

  375. this is a pretty big deal because Jesus is basically saying,

  376. you are going to Rome, right, and you know, all

  377. those prophecies are going to come true. Right.

  378. And by the way, it's also the timing is hilarious

  379. because after all of that, after having gone through this,

  380. you know, big ordeal, Jesus like.

  381. Hey, good job, do it again, right, which is great?

  382. Yeah, you know, now it's interesting. You know how we

  383. always talked about how much we love the Life Affication Bible. Sure,

  384. sometimes Life Affication Study Bible has, you know, just a

  385. great insight into Hey, it connects this passage to that

  386. passage when you read the study notes at the bottom.

  387. But sometimes they'll give you some really great historical pieces

  388. and verses two through five and chapter twenty three it

  389. says Josephus. We already referenced Josephus before, Right, he was

  390. the one who wrote about the Egyptian guy that led

  391. four thousand assassins. Right. So Josephus, a respective first century historian,

  392. described to Anonius this high priest as profane, greedy, and

  393. hot tempered. Right, So that's what it tells us about

  394. Anonius that this is a pretty bad guy. He wasn't

  395. a good religious leader. And so in that context, now

  396. this is a secular historian. This isn't some Christian guy

  397. who goes, we don't like Anonis because he's vain and

  398. hot tempered and greedy. This is a secular Roman historian saying,

  399. this is a pretty bad guy. And you know, this

  400. happens within all organized organizations in the world, whether you're

  401. talking about school teachers or firefighters, or you know, working

  402. at your in your office, or post office workers or

  403. church workers or whatever. There's a bad seed almost everywhere. Right.

  404. And yet Paul, as soon as he found out that

  405. Anonius was the high priest, back to this other point,

  406. he stepped back and said, I'm going to honor the

  407. position even though this was a bad guy. Right.

  408. Well, the guy ordered those who were standing next to

  409. paula slapman his face. Yeah, so, so in other words,

  410. what he's saying is is he's saying, I don't want

  411. to officially order the Roman commander to continue to whip

  412. you because that would be illegal.

  413. Right, you know?

  414. Is not illegal? Hey, you that are standing there, what's

  415. your name? Fred? Punch him?

  416. Right?

  417. And so what does Paul say? He calls him a

  418. hypocrite and says God will judge you and slap you

  419. in the face for slapping me in the face.

  420. And he mentioned it was illegal.

  421. So yeah, So Anonius's character is shown just by that

  422. one command that he gave by doing something like that.

  423. And then this moment where he realizes, oh, wait a minute,

  424. I've got a room full of Sadducees and Pharisees. I'm

  425. going to get them fighting and take their focus off

  426. of me. This was, I believe, a supernatural insight that

  427. Jesus gave, or that God the Holy Spirit gave to

  428. Paul in that moment to take the focus off of Paul.

  429. This trial is not going to go anywhere, and ultimately

  430. the Romans are going to have to step back in

  431. and rescue him because God's goal was not for it

  432. all to be finished in Jerusalem. God's goal was to

  433. get have Paul take the Gospel all the way to

  434. the Roman emperor.

  435. Yeah, and keep in.

  436. Mind as well for our listeners actually as who I'm

  437. speaking to, keep in mind that Paul was a Pharisee himself,

  438. so he knew everything there was to know here and

  439. he thought, oh, I have the knowledge to get these

  440. guys going. And it just as a reminder to us,

  441. just like you mentioned before, So this is a narrative

  442. that we need to look as an.

  443. Example to us.

  444. It's an example that tells us that God has perfectly

  445. placed Paul for this job. He's perfectly qualified, he's perfectly gifted.

  446. Paul.

  447. God is using his you know, his knowledge, he's leveraging

  448. his gifts, his background. In this case, you know, he

  449. told his history, his story, which gained favor with the crowd.

  450. So anyway, all that to say, it's amazing how God

  451. can place you perfectly where you are.

  452. To make the biggest difference.

  453. I believe there are people who are you know, at

  454. their workplace and their cubicle or at a desk or

  455. in an office somewhere, or you know, just a part

  456. of a group of people and they don't think that

  457. they have the right kind of influence to make a

  458. difference spiritually. But I would argue you and say, just

  459. don't ever doubt the fact that God has placed you

  460. where you are. Leverage your influence to make a difference.

  461. Did I ever tell you when we went to Cuba?

  462. Because you and I went to Cuba together. I brought

  463. Eddie Nappenberger is a good friend of mine and he

  464. used to actually, uh, one of the only people that

  465. I even know in my whole life that dabbled in this.

  466. Uh.

  467. I guess, I guess it's it's not it's not a religion,

  468. but it's a Santa Ria and it's it's really just

  469. a combination of voodoo and Catholicism. That was It just

  470. happened to the island of Cuba, right, It just developed

  471. over the centuries because the Spaniards were there and they

  472. and they brought the Catholicism and.

  473. Then there was a voodoo and everything else.

  474. Anyway, So the point is is that I invite Eddie

  475. to Cuba, not even knowing he had this background.

  476. Well, the people on the island, a lot of them have.

  477. Santa Ria, and by the way it's a kind of weird,

  478. weird kind of thing to get statues with, you know,

  479. crying with blood and all these weird things. And so anyway,

  480. we're visiting a house together and I'm trying to get

  481. through this guy and this guy is just looking at

  482. me like, you know, whatever, dude, whatever your whatever you

  483. And then all of a sudden, Eddie leans forward and says,

  484. so I noticed.

  485. And all of a sudden he starts talking.

  486. He's like, so, what you're referring to is the is

  487. the ocean coming up to thea And he starts mentioning

  488. all these different people and all these different steps everything else,

  489. and all of a sudden, this guy leans forward and

  490. he goes yes. He says, well, let me tell you

  491. why Jesus, you know, saved my life and all this

  492. kind of things. That guy leaned into that, And I

  493. thought to myself, now, who knew that that God wanted

  494. me to ask Eddie the perfect guy for this moment.

  495. Right right, because of the commonality with both of them

  496. understanding century on a level you can't even comprehend, like

  497. you stumbled through even what it is.

  498. Well, I was I was trying to be respectful to you, but.

  499. They have all these figurines and statues with different names.

  500. The city of it is unbelievable, and the demonic work

  501. within it is pretty substantial.

  502. Yes.

  503. And so for Eddie to be able to communicate directly

  504. with that guy, yes, on a level, not on an

  505. academic level, but on a practical I lived your life.

  506. Yes, and it was. It was.

  507. It was brilliant to watch, but it was literally in

  508. that moment, I kid you not. I just I recognized

  509. the bigness of God here and I thought, man, way

  510. back three months ago, when God just said, hey, ask him,

  511. he'd be good for him.

  512. I had no idea that he was going to be

  513. the most qualified person in this room at this moment,

  514. which was great.

  515. And there's some mom listening who goes, oh, I don't

  516. have some extravment. Yes, but you're a uniquely positioned to

  517. reach moms. There's there's some tool and Die guy who

  518. I'm not a ministry. Yeah, but you can reach tool

  519. and Die guys right right. God has positioned you specifically

  520. to reach the people that you're around. He's not waiting

  521. for Chris and Jeff to show up to lead them

  522. to Jesus. He sent you to go lead them to.

  523. Jeth right or an invitation to a Christmas service.

  524. That's right, Yep, that's right. So it's pretty great. God's

  525. in control. That's what this whole thing's about.

  526. Well, that's probably a great place to end, and so

  527. we will see you next time, hopefully on the Bible.

  528. Guys,
