  1. Hey, everybody, we're the Bible Guys, and if you're just

  2. tuning in recently, just know that we are showing a

  3. little bit of reruns for a few months, and then

  4. we'll be back bigger and better than ever on August

  5. thirty first, because behind the scenes, we're taking a hiatus

  6. to do some very important things.

  7. Yeah, we're building building out a new studio and we've

  8. got some new structure. Super excited about it. So August

  9. thirty first, brand new content. But in the meantime, enjoy

  10. some of our greatest hits.

  11. You're listening to The Bible Guys, a podcast where a

  12. couple of friends talk about the Bible in fun, in

  13. practical ways. Good morning, good morning, Wow, we talk good moaning,

  14. good morning.

  15. Do you wow? That''s amazing. But we have to hurry

  16. today because you got to go work out.

  17. Uh what you're gonna say jet on TV?

  18. Yeah? Wow, So don't we have to hurry?

  19. Okay, well, at least explain.

  20. It to hurry now because you're gonna go work out

  21. because you're buff. First of all, you're getting so ripped.

  22. That that is not even close to being I work

  23. out with physical therapy for old people.

  24. So what is what what is it? What is your

  25. what is your trainer? What is her specialty old people?

  26. That's what you say. That's not true at all.

  27. You know what, though, I didn't have some like bulging

  28. discs and everything, and come and find out my trainer

  29. is somebody who was a physical therapist, which is such.

  30. A rare combination.

  31. That's what I'm saying.

  32. Yeah, so what she does is she's able to actually

  33. like help me both in physical therapy and also give

  34. me exercises that are the perfect ones.

  35. Yes. So Heritage Church, the church we work at, we

  36. also have a gym. A lot of people don't know that, right,

  37. HFE hundred people are so really engaged with the gym,

  38. and we have some really great trainers. And Mandy is

  39. your trainer, and she is an expert in old people

  40. and stop that in physical therapy, those two things. If

  41. you need a gentle uh, gentle trainer. If you want

  42. to get fit, you want to go with one of

  43. the other guys. But if you want somebody to be

  44. gentle with you and tell you you're doing a good job,

  45. pretty soon you're gonna start talking about prunes.

  46. I'm telling you, Hey, by the way, fiber so I

  47. gets so much fierious.

  48. Usually whenever you see me just wearing like a T shirt,

  49. it's because I'm recording on a day.

  50. But right afterwards I go and have.

  51. A So here we are, we got a hustle, That's

  52. what I'm saying.

  53. No clock is the clock?

  54. Well, I was thinking maybe we could warm you up,

  55. get you working into a good sweat before you go

  56. to the work clock to stretch. So hey, Chris, Yes,

  57. Tomorrow September twenty eighth, Yes, is National Chris Day, which.

  58. I did not know.

  59. By the way, hey, I looked it up. By the way,

  60. I looked up National Chris Day.

  61. Did you really?

  62. I did it because I was like, come on, are

  63. you flipping serious? And it says mark your calendar is

  64. because September twenty eighth is National Chris Day, a day

  65. dedicated to celebrating all those with the name Chris. It

  66. originated in two thousand and eight.

  67. I wonder if there's a National Jeffday.

  68. I'm sure there is, Well I doubt it. So here's

  69. some ways they even give ways to celebrate National Chris Day.

  70. One host to Christine party.

  71. Oh it'd be great.

  72. Writ inrite all your friends named Chris to a party

  73. and the.

  74. Say this, I gotta say this. So I'm Chris.

  75. My daughter Sarah married Brandon, but his legal name is

  76. Christopher Brandon Drew. So she married a Chris. And then

  77. my daughter is almost engaged. Right, they're talking about engagement.

  78. And his name is also Chris. It's Chris dos is

  79. his real name. They call him Chris. So I'm Chris.

  80. He's Chris and Chris as you, guys could have a

  81. Chris themed part.

  82. We could do it by ourselves.

  83. You could send handwritten notes to all the Chris's you know,

  84. yes right, thanking them for being a part of your life,

  85. celebrating their name. You could create a Chris themed playlist,

  86. Chris Stapleton, Chris Brown, whatever. Uh. You could attend a

  87. Chris themed event. Maybe find a Chris named comedian. You

  88. could volunteer to charity with Chris in a name.

  89. Should Should I eat it?

  90. Ruth?

  91. Chris's I think you should?

  92. Yeah? Yeah. And here's why we love National Chris Day.

  93. It's a day to celebrate our friends and family members

  94. named Chris. That's one. There's so many other famous and

  95. influential people named Chris. Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Chris Martin,

  96. Chris Stapleton. I mean, just you go on and on

  97. lots of famous chris is, and then Chris is a

  98. popular and timeless name, and we just want to celebrate

  99. the fact that it has popularity, enduring popularity and charm.

  100. Wow is what it says.

  101. So the segment that Desire wrote is Chris because since

  102. tomorrow is all about you, if you could have the

  103. perfect day, what would it look like?

  104. Yes, and so I thought.

  105. That's what we want to know. So here's more than

  106. anything we want to know.

  107. So the perfect day would be get up very early

  108. from my castle in Orlando that I've rented out as

  109. an airbnb, okay, and then to go to all four

  110. Disney parks with a Disney Park Hall passer or you

  111. know what I mean, sorry, hopper.

  112. Pass one day. Yeah we all you've never done that. No, oh, yeah,

  113. it's great.

  114. I've only been to Disney twice, okay, and I've only

  115. been to the main theme park.

  116. Okay, okay, just stop talking.

  117. Okay, go ahead, let the big boys.

  118. Talk about this.

  119. So so anyway, so if you buy a park opper pass,

  120. you can like you know, spend a couple hours in

  121. one and then take the ferry over, take the bus

  122. or whatever. And then at each Disney park, the major

  123. theme park, Beau, there's four of them. I would choose

  124. my four celebrities to hang out with my family. So,

  125. in other words, it's just my favorite celebrity and he

  126. would meet me at the theme park and we'd hang

  127. out for maybe three hours hours, well no.

  128. Not a maybe perhaps why not, because that's that. But

  129. it didn't say a christ Day. It just said what

  130. is your perfect day? So I wouldn't be limited to

  131. the Chris's.

  132. No, No, you're right.

  133. I would just say whoever I want to hang out with,

  134. we would just choose one and then they would just

  135. join us and we would.

  136. Just hang out. Okay, And I don't know who those

  137. four celebrities would be.

  138. I at this think about that. Listeners know who celebrities?

  139. No, they wouldn't. No, they do not, and by the way,

  140. you'd be wrong. You'd be wrong. They would not make

  141. my top.

  142. But but I would think long and hard, and I

  143. would choose for celebrities and they would hang out with

  144. my whole fan that's your day, well, I mean, and

  145. eat well and eat well.

  146. Right, So in other words, like the Disney.

  147. The worst thing about Disney is there they have terrible food,

  148. but they do have like one or two restaurants like

  149. the be Our Guest Restaurant that is like fine dining.

  150. So I would say every meal would have to be

  151. in a fine dining type restaurant.

  152. That sounds uh, you should pay something. You said something

  153. that's your perfect day?

  154. Well, I mean it's one of them.

  155. Okay, well all right, if I'm talking about you a

  156. well of incredible information and ideas, yes, I don't know.

  157. So we just keep peeling back the onion. We keep

  158. peeling back layers of the onion, discovering who you really are.

  159. Truth be told, I don't think too many of the

  160. people would agree with that day.

  161. No, I wouldn't. Yes, I know this sounds like hell,

  162. like like I've died, I've been sent to purgatory.

  163. But the celebrity part, you'd like you, No.

  164. I wouldn't. I don't talk to celebrities when I see them.

  165. Oh well, yeah, well do I. You probably don't get

  166. the chances.

  167. I just don't do it.

  168. If you had a real down to earth one sent.

  169. Right next to celebrity one time at a restaurant, he

  170. owned and I didn't say boot literally right next to my.

  171. First Well, if you said boot, you get arrested.

  172. Bro.

  173. Yeah yeah, it was crazy. Yeah, I just don't do it.

  174. Hey, I've talked to plenty of celebrities, probably a couple dozen.

  175. Oh look at me. I hang out with celebrity.

  176. No, I just find reason to be near them. And

  177. almost everyone was completely, like, completely nice.

  178. Yeah.

  179. Yeah. The worst one was Kid Rock in terms of, like,

  180. you know, being rude. Sorry about that, Kid Rock.

  181. Oops.

  182. Oops, I just said that I loud, Yes you did.

  183. I didn't.

  184. Now he's gunning for you. I should He's going to

  185. send his posse to come and get you.

  186. Uh uh.

  187. And probably one of the nicest ones was she's not

  188. quite a celebrity, but I would say Ammy Grant. Okay,

  189. set right next to Amy Grant, talk to her like

  190. celebrity thirty minutes at Christmas time? Yeah, okay, wow, Chris, Yeah,

  191. what a day.

  192. There you go. Well, hey talking about celebrities. King David, yep,

  193. there you go about how much he loved God. Where

  194. to go, buddy, So we're David at this point is

  195. the King of Judah. We already established that, and he's

  196. trying to figure out to establish his kingdom. There's some struggles,

  197. and we've already established the fact that while he was

  198. a great warrior and a great king and leader, he

  199. also was an artist and he had this other side.

  200. And there's something to celebrate about being a renaissance kind

  201. of a person where you have a breadth to you,

  202. not just a you know, one one trick pony, but

  203. have some real skill and depth. And so he's writing

  204. out his prayers and putting them to songs, and the

  205. theme behind Psalm chapter twenty four is that everything belongs

  206. to God right. And so here's what he says. He's says,

  207. the earth is the Lord's and everything in it, the

  208. world and all its people belong to him, For he

  209. laid the earth's foundation on the seas and built it

  210. on the ocean. Depths who may climb the mountain of

  211. the Lord, who may stand in his holy place, Only

  212. those whose hands and hearts are pure, who do not

  213. worship idols and never tell lies. They will receive the

  214. Lord's blessing and have a right relationship with God, their savior.

  215. Such people may seek you and worship in your presence,

  216. Oh God of Jacob, open the gates, or open up

  217. ancient gates, Open up ancient doors, and let the King

  218. of Glory enter, who is the King of Glory, the

  219. Lord strong and mighty, the Lord invincible in battle. Open

  220. up ancient gates, open up ancient doors, and let the

  221. King of Glory enter, who is the King of Glory,

  222. the Lord of Heaven's armies. He is the King of Glory.

  223. And that reminds me of a worship song that was

  224. quite popular.

  225. Yes, King Glory, Yeah yeah.

  226. So yeah, So it is a great thing, I think,

  227. to spend time proclaiming God's greatness, declaring God's greatness, and

  228. that is exactly what this psalm does. In fact, I

  229. don't know if you read this already, because I was

  230. reading ahead on some of these notes.

  231. But one of this.

  232. Subtitles says everything belongs to God, the glorious eternal King.

  233. Let us worship him and welcome his glorious reign. And

  234. did you read that already?

  235. I didn't read it out loud, okay, so I read

  236. it quietly to myself.

  237. So you know, if this reminds me of which is

  238. very relevant for our lives, and that is at one

  239. time heard a pastor teach on the Lord's Prayer, and

  240. we did a series that was sort of based on that,

  241. right where we sort of walked through the Lord's Prayer adhritage, remember,

  242. and it was yes, you were there, you taught at

  243. it actually, but basically a lot of people I grew

  244. up learning how to recite the Lord's Prayer, you know.

  245. The Catholics would say, they call it our father right where,

  246. you know, and sometimes you would get assigned, you know,

  247. to say a certain number of our fathers, you know,

  248. depending on your penance and everything else.

  249. You go in and say, you know, anyway, it doesn't matter.

  250. The point is is that people have grown up being

  251. taught to recite it and then also to use it

  252. as a formulated prayer. And by the way, I think

  253. that's a good thing. I think reciting prayers is a

  254. good thing. Quoting psalms which were prayers is a good thing.

  255. So there's nothing wrong with that. However, on the flip

  256. side of that coin, I do not think that the

  257. Lord's Prayer was given to us as something to memorize

  258. and recite always as our main prayer.

  259. Do you believe that as well?

  260. Yes, I don't believe that he gave it to us

  261. as our main prayer, but as a model.

  262. So as a model, so what would a mean?

  263. He would establish, these are the typical elements that would

  264. be in an effective prayer.

  265. Right, And so anyway, all that to say would be

  266. the very first line in that prayer is declaring God's greatness.

  267. So he says, our Father, who are in heaven, hallowed

  268. be thy name, and a more modern version would say

  269. great is your name.

  270. And that's what it means.

  271. And so and here's the part that I'm trying to

  272. get at when thinking about Psalm twenty four, and which

  273. is all about declaring God's majesty and his rule. Is

  274. Jesus himself when he taught us to pray. The very

  275. first thing that he suggested that we do is declaring

  276. God's greatness, our Father, who are in heaven.

  277. Great is your name.

  278. And one of the things that I heard was I

  279. think perhaps one of the reasons why he did that

  280. is to remind us just who it is we're praying to,

  281. because most of the time, what do we do We say,

  282. Dear God, Okay, let me get right to my needs,

  283. wants and wishes, right, And what he's saying is like, hey, listen,

  284. I know you have needs and wants and wishes. But

  285. before you get to that, spend just a little bit

  286. of time in declaring and recognizing just who it is

  287. you're praying to. Because when you posture your heart and

  288. say God, you are God and I am not, then

  289. maybe by the time you get to your needs and

  290. wants and wishes, you'll have a lot less anxiety over them.

  291. Maybe you'll have a lot more confidence in believing that

  292. God can take care of these things, or or trusting

  293. that God will do what he's going to do and

  294. it's going to be best regardless of how he answers.

  295. So just spend time. And the answer is, well, how long?

  296. How long should I spend there? You know, because Jesus's.

  297. Prayer to our Father only takes thirty seconds to pray, right,

  298. like you could run through the Our Father in thirty

  299. seconds or less, right, So how long should I pray?

  300. Does that mean my prayer should only be thirty seconds?

  301. And honestly, my answer has always been as long as

  302. it takes, like as long as it takes for your

  303. heart to get there? You know, Oh Lord, you know

  304. how it would be your name, Like as long as

  305. it takes for your heart to wrestle and get there

  306. in your posture, to take rest and refuge in the

  307. fact that God's in control, that he's great, that you're

  308. going to the King of the universe with your needs,

  309. wants and wishes declaring his greatness like Psalm twenty four

  310. is doing, declaring his majesty and just announcing that he

  311. is God. There's a lot of comfort in that, and

  312. it's also comforting knowing that we should always start our

  313. prayers with things like this.

  314. Yeah, I think that's really powerful, the remembering that these

  315. were songs sung at the temple. It's interesting there's two

  316. pieces to this song. There's the first part just declaring

  317. that God is the ruler over everything, and then there's

  318. this interlude, and then there's open up ancient gates, right

  319. and one of the cool things. I don't know if

  320. you saw this, but in the Notes of Life Application

  321. Study Bible, it says this psalm, often set to music,

  322. was probably used in corporate worship. It may have been

  323. re enacted many times at the temple. The people outside

  324. would call out to the temple gates to open up

  325. and let the King of Glory in from inside. The

  326. priests or another group would ask who is the King

  327. of glory outside? The people would respond in unison, the

  328. Lord Strong and mighty, the Lord invincible in battle, claiming

  329. his great power and strength, and the exchange would then

  330. be repeated. You know, that's what happens. It's repeated twice

  331. there and then it says and the temple gates would

  332. swing open, symbolizing the people's desire to have God's presence

  333. among them. And this would have been a great important

  334. lesson for the children who were participating. Right, So this

  335. was a common thing within tradition that the people would

  336. be outside calling, and the tradition is that this was

  337. probably the first worship song of the week in the temple,

  338. by the way, So it's kind of neat that this

  339. would be a thing. They would call out, who's the strong,

  340. Who's the Lord Strong and mighty? Right, they go back

  341. and forth. So I love that that this is corporate worship,

  342. corporate singing, and the Bible talks a lot about worship.

  343. So I spent fifteen years as a worship leader. I

  344. have a degree in music, particularly focused on worship, and

  345. the Bible says that we're supposed to worship Him with

  346. our songs. We're supposed to sing new songs to the Lord,

  347. supposed to use all the instruments and all the voices,

  348. all those things. And God delights in our individual worship.

  349. He delights in our corporate group worship. It's one of

  350. the great benefits of the gathered church. It's one of

  351. the things that you can't do privately, is worship in

  352. a large group. Right. So that's there. But then he

  353. says to worship Him in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs.

  354. There are worship songs, There are praise songs, there are

  355. testimony songs. Right, and so this one the earth is

  356. the Lord's and everything that, this is a worship song. God,

  357. You're big, You're God, and I'm not. That's a worship song.

  358. Right.

  359. Most of the songs we sing lately on Sunday mornings,

  360. it seems like in a lot of churches are more

  361. praise songs. God, You're just really good, right, You're the

  362. way maker. You're the one who who solves my problems.

  363. You're the one who takes care of me when I

  364. was afraid I didn't know where to go. You're the one.

  365. Those are praise songs, right, So those are are those

  366. so if you're thinking psalms, psalms are thought of as prayers. Typically,

  367. worship hymns oftentimes are praise. They're the ones that are

  368. saying praise God from whom all blessings flow. Kind of

  369. a song, right, God, you are the one that provides

  370. for me. And then spiritual songs are usually testimony kind

  371. of songs. I was lost and you found me. I

  372. didn't know what to turn and you and you showed

  373. me the way. I was broken and you fixed me right.

  374. Amazing grace is kind of a mix of those two things.

  375. So testimony songs have a way of what like telling

  376. your story, identifying my story, humanity, right, journey.

  377. My story was resolved by God. Whereas a worship song

  378. is God's God. Right, Wow, we're going to worship you

  379. because you're God. A praise song is God, you do

  380. good things and that you're powerful, you can do anything

  381. you make the way. And then spiritual songs are going

  382. to be those things that either are talking about biblical things.

  383. You know, Father Abraham had many sons, right, so it's

  384. gonna be that it's just a biblical idea biblical literacy

  385. kind of songs or their testimony songs saying this was

  386. my life and this is what God did in my life. Right,

  387. my life is only because of Him, and so I

  388. think it's important. Then Paul highlights those three. You see

  389. all of those in the Book of Psalms, along with confession. Right,

  390. that's the other one that's not mentioned that Paul mentions.

  391. But David also confesses sin in there. So those would

  392. be maybe the four major areas. And we all tend

  393. to go, we tend to gravitate if we're not careful

  394. towards look what God did for me, or I'm trusting

  395. God to do good things for me. But before we

  396. ever get to the praise side, I think we should

  397. spend more time in the worship side. God's God and

  398. I'm not. He's just right. Yeah, And this is what

  399. David is doing in this one. There's not a lot

  400. of praise in here. There's not a lot of testimony

  401. in here. It's just God, You're God, and you're worth

  402. worshiping because of who you are. Yeah.

  403. And by the way, name can you can you name

  404. a song off the top of your head, whether current

  405. or super old, that sticks out in your mind as

  406. a true worship song that just says God, You're God.

  407. Yeah, man, I'm put on the spot there. I bet

  408. our listeners could.

  409. Yeah.

  410. I just thought that maybe, you know, I think I

  411. remember the Phillips Kraigndeine worship song you Are God Alone.

  412. Oh yeah, yeah, I remember that. I went back in

  413. the day. That was probably what fifteen years ago, twenty

  414. years ago? Yeah, yeah, that's the one that's been in

  415. my mind ever since we've been reading this. Okay, this thing,

  416. but a current worship song, there are many, There are

  417. many that go there as opposed to the praise songs.

  418. Are you know remember the song you are so Good?

  419. Remember Chris Tomlin, you are amazing God? Like that one

  420. when and he says, you know the author of creation?

  421. How great is our God? These are the types of songs, right,

  422. just talking about how God is great?

  423. God is God.

  424. Then praise songs are man, you take good care of me, right,

  425. so your God is worship, You take good care of me,

  426. praise what you provide everything I need? And then the

  427. testimony stuff is you've changed me, right, this is this

  428. is how You've changed me? Or biblical literacy kind of stuff.

  429. So the praise songs could be that praise is the

  430. water that my enemy is drowning.

  431. What song is that?

  432. Yeah?

  433. Yeah, so I I brought that.

  434. I brought that up to poke fun because because sometimes

  435. there are lyrics that just come out of the blue

  436. every once in a while that.

  437. You look and go what.

  438. Yeah, well it's a biblical literacy. It's a teaching moment,

  439. right to be able to come back and go, hey,

  440. by the way, that's referencing when uh, the Egyptians drowned.

  441. You know, so the Israelites passed through on dry land

  442. and then the Red Sea flooded off the the Egyptians.

  443. But that that has nothing to do with praise though,

  444. Well you praise in the fact that God delivered me. Okay,

  445. that's that's that's what.

  446. That that's what it's supposed to be.

  447. But it says, praise is the water that my enemy's

  448. drying sometimes yeah symbolic, Yeah, oh, that that's I give

  449. a reason to praise.

  450. The Lord muscle. That's what that's a uess. Okay, So

  451. that's interesting.

  452. So wow, what a what a great what a great

  453. little course there? What do I want to say, master

  454. master class on worship, which is pretty cool.

  455. And so having balance in those areas, right, I've been

  456. talking with the worship leader a little bit at our

  457. church here about Hey, okay, we're doing really good in

  458. this area, what about what about some of these other

  459. things let's not let's not miss them and different you know,

  460. songwriters and different people that everybody else is listening to.

  461. They put out their songs what's going on in their

  462. life at the time. But it's important for us to

  463. also remember, Hey, we have to have our own song,

  464. and we have to have our own our own ability

  465. to sing a new song to the Lord, and what's missing.

  466. So if everything lately has been praised, then hey, we

  467. should get back to worship or or what about a

  468. testimony song, or what about a biblical literacy type of

  469. a song. You know, Martin Luther, when he was kicking

  470. off the Reformation during his ministry, he wrote over five

  471. thousand songs. Did you know that a thousand songs? He

  472. wrote more songs than he did pages on doctrine? Real, right, Yeah,

  473. it's pretty pretty incredible, And he felt like music was

  474. the best conveyance for teaching doctrine to his people. So

  475. if you think of of you know, Almighty Ford, this

  476. is our God, think of the doctrine that is in

  477. that song. He's really building it out of the Book

  478. of Psalms, the concept, but there's so much doctrine, and

  479. he would take popular tunes from the taverns, he would

  480. take popular tunes that everybody knew, and he would put

  481. theological depth to it to teach people the words of God.

  482. And it's amazing how much of our doctrine is developed

  483. by songs. And we have to be careful if we

  484. start wondering, why do our children only think that God

  485. is our good luck charm and he provides everything we want?

  486. It might be because we're only singing praise songs.

  487. Right right.

  488. We need more breadth to our worship. That's great because

  489. you remember though, you remember a song way longer than

  490. you remember a message.

  491. Right right.

  492. I agree with that. I agree with that.

  493. Okay, well, hey, that is our time. And what a great,

  494. great unpacking of Psalm chapter twenty four. And there's so

  495. many different types of Psalms, and I'm sure we'll be

  496. touching on many more of along the life of David

  497. as we continue our series now that David is king,

  498. as we walk through the Old Testament. Hopefully we'll see

  499. you Monday on the Bible guys,
