  1. You're listening to The Bible Guys, a podcast where a

  2. couple of friends talk about the Bible in fun in

  3. practical ways.

  4. Good morning morning. I was hoping talk the whole not

  5. through good morning, good morning? Do you? Yes? All right?

  6. Love it? They coming in. You're the percussion. There we go. Yes, well,

  7. I was trying to do that like the tap dancing.

  8. But oh oh I see, I see, I see. Percussion

  9. is good? Well, I mean, isn't tap dancing?

  10. Sure?

  11. Absolutely? Yes? Okay, well, hey, good morning everybody. I was

  12. just hoping, just I was hoping, beyond hope that today

  13. was the day you would sing to us us that's

  14. so funny.

  15. Hey, well, we are the Bible guys. We want to

  16. welcome you here, and we are starting off a segment

  17. called guess the word Yes.

  18. And so this is very similar to if you know

  19. the game the party game Taboo. Yes, It's very similar

  20. to that, where there is a word that I want

  21. you to guess, but there are five words I cannot

  22. say to get you to guess that.

  23. Man, if you happen to be watching on video instead

  24. of just listening, we are going to hopefully put the

  25. words that Jeff cannot say, on the screen right here,

  26. so that you can play at home.

  27. That's right. And if you're playing at home and you're watching,

  28. every correct answer you get is worth a point, if

  29. your point. If you're listening, if you're listening on the

  30. podcast and you cannot see those words, every quick answer

  31. gets worth ten thousand points. So that would you know

  32. what that would make me do?

  33. That would make me hit pause on the video and

  34. then go look it up on Spotify, Okay, because I

  35. want to score more points?

  36. You want more points? Yeah, there you go. Because you're

  37. a winner, Chris, I'm a winner. Okay, So here's the

  38. first one. Right, I'm going to give Chris close to see,

  39. but you can guess the bold keyword. I'm not allowed

  40. to say any of the italicized words on my sheet

  41. here dog on of people like me? Okay, good, they do,

  42. they do? Okay. It's the noise okay that a tom

  43. makes to get the attention of a hen. That are

  44. what makes Tom makes to get the attention of a hen. Cluck?

  45. Oh almost, it's a different. Oh, it's a thing gobble gobble.

  46. There you go. Correct. That was allowed to say eat

  47. turkey food or devour? What the heck? Is a tom.

  48. That's the male turkey. So you know this because you're

  49. a hunter. I thought people, Yeah, I thought people knew

  50. that is that a hunting thing? When you were a kid,

  51. didn't you have to make like turkey things outline your hand,

  52. make a turkey and they called it you know what,

  53. they called it? Turkeys? Yeah, okay, okay, yeah, I guess

  54. maybe I grew up. I grew up on a you know,

  55. on a homestead, and we had I don't know, I

  56. don't know. I just thought everybody knew that a tom

  57. is that. I'm just wondering if it's a hunting thing.

  58. So so a male turkey that has not is not

  59. old enough to breed yet, he doesn't have a big

  60. beard yet. Yeah, that he's called a jake. And then

  61. when he's able to breed, he grows a longer beard

  62. and he's called a tom. You could have threatened me

  63. with death and I wouldn't have known it. Okay, congratulations,

  64. you got to gobble. That was that was the important thing.

  65. Because that was like cluck and you were like a

  66. different burden. I was like, what are you talking about?

  67. I was like, oh, it's a thanks gobbling.

  68. Yeah, gotcha. I was just in the woods a couple

  69. weeks ago, and the turkeys were gobbling like crazy. This Yeah,

  70. it was really neat. Okay. This next one is when

  71. the king sits down at his giant table. He's sitting

  72. down for a feast. Feast. That is correct. I wasn't

  73. allowed to say Thanksgiving, food, eat, banquet, or famine. Oh wow? Okay. Uh.

  74. These people were the original Europeans that came to America.

  75. You were correct. Pilgrims, progress, Plymouth, Mayflower, Indians, and travelers.

  76. Those are the words I was not allowed to use. Wow. Yeah,

  77. that was a tough one. Okay, this one's difficult. Okay.

  78. So when you have meatki, No, when you have meat cooking, oh,

  79. I'm not allowed to say cook? Oh okay, okay. When

  80. you have meat in the oven and you don't want

  81. it to dry out, you pull it out and you

  82. put more liquid on it based it. There you go. Yes, yes,

  83. I wasn't allowed to say cook. I just lost ten thousand,

  84. lost thousand. Wait a minute, I'm reading it. So it's

  85. only one point. Oh that's true. That's true. And we're

  86. on video. Yeah there, we got my video. Yeah, we

  87. saw myself a video. Excellent okay, and here's the last one.

  88. Those original Europeans arrived in the United States. No, no,

  89. what did they ride on? Horses? Know when they came

  90. across the water, there's the mayflower. There you go the mayflower.

  91. You should yes, well, I and say ship, pilgrims, flower

  92. Atlantic or voyage. Oh you could have said sale, sled.

  93. Oh I could have said sailed. Yeah, yeah, okay, Yeah,

  94. I'm like horses, you're like, not across the water. Goofball

  95. dumb dum. Okay, they go gobble feast, pilgrims, based and

  96. mayflower were the words. Okay, congratulations Chris. Yes, and I'm

  97. sorry for blowing it on based.

  98. Yeah.

  99. Well, you know I've done that a time or two

  100. as well. Okay, riveting, riveting, segment, riveting, riveting. Everybody is

  101. on the edge of their seat. And I'm sure we

  102. have a few of our of our listeners that have

  103. ten thousand points or five thousand, five thousand points, fifty thousand.

  104. We gave ten thousand points piece, yeah, fifty thousand, I bitch,

  105. we got people got fifty thousand points, do you think so? Yeah?

  106. Our viewers somebody got five congratulations. Somebody's in Tanzania right now.

  107. They're like changed, it changes in check e Cheese. That's right,

  108. you just you used to work in check e Cheese.

  109. Yeah, you bring all the all the tickets in and

  110. then you get a Frisbee exactly.

  111. I remember being so disappointed after having what I thought

  112. was a good jillion tickets and go up and go, okay,

  113. here's the section that you can pick from. I'm like,

  114. I want that TV. No, you get these.

  115. You get this top David Butchers, which is an adult

  116. chucky cheese. You know, you build it up on that card,

  117. you know, and it feels like forever. You can just

  118. even save the card. And they're like, you have fourteen

  119. thousand points.

  120. You're like what And you walk in there and you're

  121. like and.

  122. You look at the top shop and it goes and

  123. it says it's like three hundred thousand points, and you're

  124. like what.

  125. Right, Okay, So for your fourteen thousand, you can order

  126. out of this box right here. You can get this

  127. pez Dispenser, right. You can get this fen.

  128. Put a squiggly head on it, which includes the chick lits,

  129. just not including the Erasis.

  130. Yep. Okay, So anyways, that's a movie quote. Oh really

  131. nineteen seventy nine.

  132. Oh wow, it is Martin In, the jerk, the jerk,

  133. he says, step right up and win some crap, he says.

  134. Oh no. I went and saw Steve Martin and Martin

  135. Short at the Fox Theater a couple weeks ago. What

  136. it was amazing. Oh my goodness, I can't believe it.

  137. They came and went and they were here. Bonnie and

  138. I sat like on the eighth row in the center. Okay,

  139. it was amazing. There is never fund a.

  140. Time where you ever attended anything where I've been more

  141. jealous ever.

  142. They were circles. So you got these two guys, you know,

  143. Steve Martin seventy nine, Martin Shorts seventy four. The energy,

  144. the humor, the physical comedy that they did for two

  145. hours was unbelievable. Are they still here? No, they were

  146. only here for two nights. I am angry at myself.

  147. Well they told me, they said. Marty says, hey, don't

  148. tell Zarball we're here. Is what he says, like, Oh okay, Marty.

  149. Yeah, Marty, and I go back the ways, all the

  150. way back to innerspace.

  151. Yeah, he said. And Steve Martin had to say, well,

  152. the last time it just got weird. I said, okay,

  153. I won't tell our probather you guys. So it was

  154. a secret, that's only only only like ten thousand other

  155. people knew that they were here. And that'll be the

  156. last time he's on tour. I'm sure I don't know

  157. the touring every every year. So here we go.

  158. Anyways, I would consider, by the way, traveling to another city,

  159. I would drive all these Chicago to see them.

  160. Well, they're on a tour. I can't believe I missed them.

  161. I'm so angry, sorry about that. Okay. So Proverbs chapter eight,

  162. Chapter eight, this is now, Uh, Solomon is writing, by

  163. the way, Jeff, as if Wisdom is talking. You were so.

  164. Clever in giving those answers and so, but not as

  165. clever as Solomon is, who was about to give us advice.

  166. Oh there you go, Yes man, that was a good one, Chris,

  167. thank you. Good transition. Promise the listeners. So clever, because

  168. the reason why it's clever is because he's writing as

  169. if Wisdom is speaking to his children. You know, sometimes,

  170. which is clever on top of clever, it's super clever,

  171. clever clever, it's it's cleverly clever, yes, So sometimes kids

  172. can't hear their parents' voice. It just sounds like Charlie

  173. Brown's teacher, right. But isn't it amazing that if a

  174. kid has a coach or a teacher or somebody that

  175. they really like, all of a sudden, that coach or

  176. teacher can say the same thing mom and Dad said,

  177. and now, all of a sudden, it's the smartest thing

  178. they've ever heard in their life. So Solomon is kind

  179. of using that ploy. He's using a third person, he's

  180. using wisdom itself to speak to his children. And it's

  181. very clever. Which is just a wise thing for moms

  182. and dads to get some good adult allies that you

  183. can trust, get a good youth pastor get good coaches

  184. and align with them and say, hey, I need you,

  185. my son really likes you. Make sure you reinforce this

  186. idea that we're working on at home, you know. And

  187. so anyways, so he says in Proverb chapter eight, listen

  188. as wisdom calls out here as understanding raises her voice

  189. on the hilltop along the road, she takes her stand

  190. at the crossroads by the gates at the entrance to

  191. the town. On the road leading in, she cries aloud.

  192. I call to you, to all of you, I raise

  193. my voice to all people. You simple people, use good judgment,

  194. You foolish people, show some understanding. Listen to me, for

  195. I have important things to tell you. Everything I say

  196. is right, for I speak the truth and to test

  197. every kind of deception. My advice is wholesome. There is

  198. nothing devious or crooked in it. My words are plain

  199. to anyone with understanding, clear to those with knowledge. Choose

  200. my instruction rather than silver, and knowledge rather than pure gold.

  201. For wisdom is far more valuable than rubies. Nothing you

  202. desire can compare with it. I wisdom live together with

  203. good judgment. I know where to discover knowledge and discernment.

  204. All who fear the Lord will hate evil. Therefore I

  205. hate pride and arrogance, corruption and perverse speech. Common sense

  206. and success belong to me, Insight and strength their mind

  207. because of me. King's reign and rulers make just decrees.

  208. Rulers lead with my help, and nobles make right to judgments.

  209. I love all who love me. Those who search will

  210. surely find me. I have riches and honor, as well

  211. as enduring wealth and justice. My gifts are better than gold,

  212. even the purest gold. And my wages are better than

  213. sterling silver. I walk in righteousness and paths of justice.

  214. Those who love me inherit wealth, I will find their treasuries.

  215. I will fill their treasuries. The Lord formed me from

  216. the beginning, before he created anything else. I was appointed

  217. in ages past, at the very first, before the earth began.

  218. I was born before the oceans were created, before the

  219. springs bubbled forth their waters, before the mountains were formed,

  220. before the hills. I was born before he had made

  221. the earth and fields and the first handfuls of soil.

  222. I was there when he established the heavens, and when

  223. he drew the horizon on the oceans. I was there

  224. when he set the clouds above, and when he established

  225. springs deep in the earth. I was there when he

  226. set the limits of the seas so they would not

  227. spread beyond their boundaries, And when he marked off the

  228. earth's foundations. I was the architect at his side. I

  229. was his constant delight, rejoicing always in his presence. I

  230. and how happy I was with the world he created.

  231. How I rejoice with the human family, And so my

  232. children listen to me. For all who follow my ways

  233. are joyful. Listen to my instruction and be wise, don't

  234. ignore it. Joyful are those who listen to me, watching

  235. for me daily at my gates, waiting for me outside

  236. my home. For whoever finds me finds life and receives

  237. favor from the Lord. But those who miss me injure themselves.

  238. All who hate me love death. Wow.

  239. When I think of wisdom, and I've often, you know,

  240. been pretty fascinated that Solomon talks about wisdom from the

  241. standpoint that you know it's a she. But when I

  242. think of wisdom in my mind, I always think of

  243. this chapter. I I've always been fascinated with the visual

  244. aids of like, you know, this ancient being who was

  245. there before the world's began, which, of course is God.

  246. God is the one who existed before the earth was form. Right,

  247. God is the one who existed from all eternity past.

  248. But God had wisdom, So what so.

  249. What is wisdom? God is wisdom of.

  250. Course, yes, of course and and uh and he has

  251. wisdom and his wisdom, and he has love and his love.

  252. But anyway he uh uh so anyway, when when but wisdom,

  253. talking as a person, says, I was here long before

  254. you know the earth was created all of a sudden.

  255. You try to picture wisdom as this ancient being, you know,

  256. and and and all of a sudden. Now you think, okay,

  257. if wisdom is obtainable, because obviously it is right and

  258. he's saying, obtain it, obtain me and uh and guess

  259. what I'm worth more than gold and rubies and sterling

  260. silver and uh and and guess what I've been around.

  261. It makes you feel like you're tapping into this this

  262. this magical thing. But then you have to think about

  263. it like that's the same with God in.

  264. Us, right, right right? Have you ever heard.

  265. Francis Chan one time gave a message and he talked

  266. about how he's like, man, when I get to Heaven,

  267. he goes, I'm going to go up to Moses and

  268. he's and I'm going to say to Moses, man, tell

  269. me what it was like. What was it like to

  270. see and talk to God in the form of a

  271. burning bush? That must have been incredible. And Moses is

  272. going to look back at you and say, yeah, it

  273. was really cool.

  274. But let me ask you a question. What was it

  275. like to have God inside of you?

  276. Like the power of God within you to be able

  277. to tap into the power of Christ who lived inside

  278. of you. Because let me tell you something, I didn't

  279. have that. I remember thinking like, okay, that's a cool thought, right,

  280. And so you know, I get fascinated with this whole

  281. ancient being before the foundations of the world.

  282. I'm thinking, oh, wait, that's what we have every day God,

  283. that's God in us. Right, we have access to the

  284. God's wisdom. And they're crazy. And he's establishing the fact

  285. that wisdom is not situational and it's not cultural, right,

  286. that that it predates humanity, it predates godly wisdom. That

  287. is not a situational thing to go all. Well, back

  288. in old fashioned times, that's what they believed. But now,

  289. well that's a really.

  290. Good point because people say certain values are outdated and culture.

  291. Right, So so God's wisdom is it transcends all cultures

  292. in all ages. I think that's That's what I'm trying

  293. to say. So, sure there are cultural things. Should we

  294. wear robes or should we wear pants? Right? That that

  295. that's a cultural thing. That's not a wisdom. I don't know,

  296. if it's really hot, maybe that that robe again, but

  297. you know, some of those things, would you prefer hummus

  298. or potato or French fries. Right, that that's just a

  299. cultural thing. And so sure, those things change. But when

  300. it comes to the wisdom of the ages, how to

  301. live your life, how to manage money, how to navigate relationships,

  302. how the idea that integrity and rightly being an honesty

  303. will always build a society, and corruption and violence and

  304. evil will always tear down a society. Those things, those

  305. are pre established before the foundation of the world, and

  306. they don't change. It's not like, oh, that's an old

  307. fashioned idea. It doesn't. I don't know why, but I

  308. was just I just read a thing here recently. There's

  309. over one hundred thousand laws in America, and yet it

  310. seems like everybody who runs for office has a new

  311. law they want to bring. Is that what we need?

  312. We need more laws, really, And it's kind of the

  313. same way with regard to every generation thinks that they're

  314. wiser than the last generation. And while they may have

  315. more information or while they have more technology, I don't

  316. know that every generation is more wise, right, And so

  317. getting back to those foundational ideas of how to live,

  318. I think that's one of the reasons why he highlights

  319. so long that wisdom existed before anything else did.

  320. Yeah, I love how I love how Solomon is describing

  321. how to recognize good wisdom. Right, and so he says,

  322. for I speak the truth and detest every kind of deception.

  323. So if you're wondering whether or not when you hear

  324. piece of advice, whether it's wisdom, then ask yourself, Okay,

  325. you know, is this other piece of advice that my

  326. friend is giving me doesn't involve any type of deception?

  327. You know? Because I mean that is a that is

  328. a telling thing.

  329. Sometimes we think because something is clever, right, you know

  330. that maybe it's wisdom, and just because it's clever, if

  331. it involves deception of any kind, then it's it's definitely

  332. not wholesome. Because he said my advice is wholesome the

  333. very next verse and verse eight, and there's nothing devious

  334. or crooked in it my words.

  335. And then listen to this.

  336. My words are plain to anyone with understanding, clear to

  337. those with knowledge. So so in other words, anybody who

  338. has basic understanding can recognize wisdom, is what he's saying.

  339. So I think it's you know, have you ever been

  340. talking with somebody and somebody would tell you already know

  341. the right thing to do. You've probably said that to somebody, sure, absolutely,

  342. like you already know the right answer, right, I'm just

  343. I'm just here to remind you.

  344. And that's really what Solomon is saying.

  345. Solomon is saying, like you could recognize with them as

  346. soon as you hear it, you already know the right thing.

  347. Well, so I'm reminded in that verse nine, my words

  348. are playing to anyone with understanding. I'm reminded. There's another proverb,

  349. or Solomon says in a multitude of words, there's no

  350. shortage of sin. And it makes me think of our

  351. extraordinarily litigious society today. My wife and I just closed

  352. on a new home, and we signed how many good

  353. jillion documents? Right? Most of them? Most of the documents

  354. I signed were full of so many words that created

  355. so many loopholes for the lending agency to get out

  356. of the situation, to give them more control and take

  357. control away from me. That's most of it. Or to

  358. where nobody else is responsible except me for all these things. Right,

  359. the more words it takes to get a thing done,

  360. the less likely it is that it has integrity in it. Right. Right,

  361. So I had a friend. We were going to write

  362. up a contract to do a project with somebody, and

  363. so I wrote up an MoU and it had like

  364. eight big ideas and then we refined it a little bit,

  365. but it was eight things that we were agreeing to

  366. work on. And then somebody goes, oh, that needs to

  367. go to the attorneys. The attorneys need to look at it.

  368. The attorneys came back and what was one page, and

  369. very crystal clear, they came back with eighteen pages eighteen

  370. one page, eighteen pages. So then you know, I'm a

  371. little bit of a lawyer in my head. I argue words.

  372. You know, we joke about that I've got this thing.

  373. Why would I say this thing in four sentences when

  374. I could have said it in one sentence? Right? So

  375. I started critique. The lawyer got a little upset with me,

  376. and I said, don't these three paragraphs say the same

  377. thing as this one sentence? And he goes, yes, but

  378. this gives you more outs. So oh, so I'm writing

  379. this for loopholes for me, as opposed to two people

  380. having some integrity and coming in and seeing the plain words.

  381. I said, so, if I don't have your three paragraphs

  382. and I only have that one sentence. So are you

  383. saying I can't protect myself with that one sentence? And

  384. he goes, no, No, it means the same thing. I said, Well,

  385. then why do we need to And so I refuse

  386. the eighteen page document because more words just creates more fights.

  387. Let's be simpler and make sure that we're in clarity.

  388. I'm not saying you shouldn't sign contracts. I'm not saying

  389. that you shouldn't protect yourself. I'm not. But because not

  390. everybody's honest and integrity, but if you're working with somebody

  391. that has honesty and integrity, I think simply written words.

  392. The more words somebody else puts on a page, the

  393. more diligent you have to be to read and understand

  394. those words. That's what I'm trying to say. Yeah, because

  395. usually somebody's trying to shoot a move with the more

  396. words they have on there.

  397. Well, you know when Apple comes out with an update

  398. and it says you can't download the new software without signing,

  399. and it says read and sign, and you're literally going

  400. you literally have to scroll the whole page like nine times.

  401. We own you and your children and right everything that

  402. you think now is our property. So what percentage of

  403. the population who signed it read it. They don't that

  404. many people, right, Yeah.

  405. There may be a dozen people in the world that

  406. actually sit down and read that, because my guess is,

  407. if you read it and you actually understand it, you

  408. probably wouldn't sign it.

  409. You know, there was a time when a man's word

  410. was his bond, when a handshake would really get business

  411. done and two men standing. My dad grew up. It's

  412. so funny. I think of old time business being done

  413. over the pickle barrel because there was a general store

  414. picklebar Yeah. Well, there was a general store in our

  415. community that all the old farmers in our community would

  416. go down and they had they made sandwiches behind the counter,

  417. and there was a general store and they had two

  418. pickle barrels that had checkers boards on the thing. They

  419. men to sit around play checkers and do business and

  420. it was like a daily thing and they would work

  421. it out. Hey, so you plant the hay this year,

  422. and we'll plant the alfalfa. He's going to raise the cows,

  423. and they're going to plant the corn. And they would

  424. kind of work out all of this and everything we've

  425. done by a handshake. Yeah, sure, I'll loan you my

  426. tractor and in the meantime, I'm going to need to

  427. borrow your hay Baylor. Right, And they would just do

  428. everything with a handshake. And it's because they trusted each other,

  429. They went to church together, they knew each other well,

  430. they didn't take advantage of each other and understood that

  431. society requires that people keep their word. And then we

  432. get into a litigious society where the expectation the longer

  433. the contracts are, the less society believes that keeping our

  434. word is essential. Right. As a matter of fact, the

  435. reality is, you sign those contracts and you know, you know,

  436. I signed a lease on a car a while back,

  437. and the guy behind the countrect he said, you know,

  438. these things aren't worth the paper they're written on. You

  439. can get out of it, so can we. Well, then

  440. why did I just sign twenty two pages? Right? It's

  441. because we're currently living in a society doesn't believe in

  442. the value of the word. And I just think that

  443. there's something to that that godly men and women should

  444. be people of their word. You say a thing, you

  445. should follow through on that thing?

  446. Well sure r yeah, Well, I mean James says, let

  447. your yesp yes, and you know, b.

  448. No, yeah, yeah, exactly. That's what godly people do. That's

  449. kind of the advice he's giving here is be really

  450. careful if people use too many words or whatever.

  451. So, yeah, that's great, all righty. Wisdom is uh is

  452. the essence of who God is.

  453. Yeah right, absolutely.

  454. So, and let's recognize it and when we see it,

  455. let's hang on to it more than we crave gold

  456. or riches.

  457. Wisdom is far more valuable than rubies. Nothing you desire

  458. can compare with it. That's awesome.

  459. All right. Well, that's a good wrap up and we

  460. will see you next time, hopefully on the Bible Gush
