-
Now let's hear the message. Now, before I jump
-
into this morning's talk as we kick off a new
-
series, I want to bring somebody out on stage
-
to encourage you. Now, I had no idea that this
-
person was going to be here, so I'm super excited
-
about it. In fact, in my opinion, this person
-
is one of the most influential communicators
-
in this area for our generation. So this was
-
a big surprise. So I'm going to try to welcome
-
him out. Can we give him an HTV welcome? Come
-
on. Come on. You don't want to. I think they
-
need a little more. Come on. Come on. Come on.
-
Oh, here they are. All right. Look at that. You
-
see you. There you go. Look at that. Does everybody
-
see themselves? Everyone's thinking, Chris, seriously?
-
Like, are you kidding me? Is that in anybody's
-
eyes? Oh, it is? I guess you really needed to
-
see it. Now, the funny thing about this is, remember
-
what I said. I want you to welcome one of the
-
most influential communicators and speakers of
-
our generation. And I grabbed that mirror and
-
I said, can you see you? So I want to ask you,
-
who talks to you more than you? Who influences
-
you more than you? Think about it. Who decides
-
where you go or where you won't? What you'll
-
eat and what you won't eat. What you post and
-
what you won't post more than you. You are an
-
influential communicator. You are a powerful
-
communicator. As a matter of fact, you're not
-
just one of the greatest communicators you've
-
ever heard. You're the greatest communicator
-
that you're always hearing. You are always hearing
-
a voice inside of you speaking to you about you.
-
So who are you talking to? See, I'm fully aware
-
that although I'm doing everything in my power
-
this morning to share God's truth with clarity
-
and precision, there's also another voice that
-
you hear. I'm fully aware of that fact. And what's
-
most important is not just what I'm saying to
-
you, it's what you're saying to you about you.
-
See, that voice is what is critical. That voice
-
is what is important. Because this morning I
-
could be saying to you, you're a masterpiece.
-
You could be thinking in your mind, well, I certainly
-
don't feel like one today because my life is
-
not beautiful and I'm certainly not beautiful.
-
I could be saying that God is going to use your
-
pain that you're currently going through for
-
a purpose to form you into the image of Jesus
-
and impact the lives of others. And you could
-
be thinking in your mind, then how come nothing's
-
changed, Chris? I shouldn't be going through
-
this anyway. See, it's the inner dialogue that
-
will always navigate the direction and trajectory
-
of your life. So who are you talking to? How
-
are you talking to you? I mean, just being honest
-
here, some of you would be offended and ready
-
to fight a person if they talk to you the way
-
that you talk to yourself. So what are you saying
-
to yourself? What is the inner voice communicating?
-
Because that's the voice that is most critical.
-
See, we have to realize negative self -talk is
-
like looking into a carnival house mirror. Right?
-
You know, the mirror that's all weird, out of
-
shape. It's real. But the reflection is all distorted.
-
You see yourself as bigger, smaller, weaker,
-
uglier, more broken than you really are. And
-
see, that's what happens when we listen to our
-
fears, our failures, our doubts, our insecurities
-
instead of God's truth. The enemy doesn't always
-
have to destroy you. He just has to distort how
-
you see yourself. You'll rarely rise above the
-
words you repeatedly speak of yourself. And I'm
-
convinced that life is little about the external
-
battles that we face every day and everything
-
about the internal conversation that we're having
-
with ourselves. So who are you talking to? That
-
brings us to our text today in 1 Samuel chapter
1 Samuel 17 chapter mention
-
17 as we kick off a new series called Bloodlines
-
for the month of October. And this month we'll
-
be discussing four different character studies
-
from the family line of Jesus. We'll be looking
-
at their faith, their failures, their victories,
-
and the choices that became a part of Jesus'
-
story that we are now a part of. Now some of
-
you, when you heard the text that I was sharing,
-
you're thinking, for real? I got up today for
-
David and Goliath? I would have slept in in this
-
rain. Yes, it's true. We'll be discussing David
-
and Goliath. It's a classic story. If you went
-
to Sunday school one time in your entire life,
-
you know David and Goliath. And perhaps that's
-
the problem. That's the problem. I think it's
-
our familiarity with this passage that actually
-
robs us of the revelation and the truth that's
-
in it. And I want us to look at David and Goliath
-
today through a new set of lens. Fresh eyes.
-
To see the vision that maybe there's something
-
deeper that God wants to speak to all of us.
-
See, I'm convinced that within this passage,
-
the fight, the battle, has little to do with
-
the fight and everything to do with the conversations
-
that happened before the fight. Who they were
-
talking to. We have made this passage about the
-
fight. between David and Goliath, but there's
-
so much more. I mean, think about it. The fight
-
can be summed up in four sentences. He hit him
-
with a rock. He fell down dead. He cut off his
-
head. Hallelujah. That's it. That's the whole
-
fight in four simple sentences. It's over. Church
-
is out. Let's go. So if that's it, then tell
-
me why there are 58 verses in 1 Samuel chapter
1 Samuel 17 chapter mention
-
17. It's all the talking. It's all the interaction.
-
It's the conversations. See, when we read about
-
Goliath, the first thing we notice, he's not
-
cutting off anyone's head. He's not even swinging
-
his sword. All he is doing is talking. And what
-
he is saying paralyzes the army with fear. So
-
this morning, I want to talk to you about five
-
critical conversations that David had before
-
he got to the fight. And I believe these truths
-
from these five conversations can apply to your
-
life and supernaturally and radically change
-
you and push you further in your relationship
-
with Jesus. Are you ready to do this? All right,
-
look at your neighbor, high five him and say,
-
this one's for you. This one's for you. So here
-
we go. We're jumping into our first conversation.
-
Humility isn't thinking less of yourself. It's
-
thinking of yourself. Less. 1 Samuel 17, jumping
-
in one day, Jesse said to David, take this basket
-
of roasted grain and these 10 loaves of bread.
-
Carry them quickly to your brothers. Give these
-
10 cuts of cheese to their captain. See how your
-
brothers are getting along and bring back a report
-
on how they are doing. So David left the sheep
-
with another shepherd and set out early the next
-
morning with the gifts as Jesse has directed
-
him. This is the first conversation David had
-
before the fight. You can call this conversation
-
door -dash dialogue. Right? It seems like a real
-
small request. No big deal. Just go deliver some
-
charcuterie board to your brothers. It's a small
-
thing. But how many even know it's a real big
-
thing? See, this is a profound conversation because
-
if David rejected this request from his father,
-
he would have never been positioned for the battle.
-
He would have never won the battle that he was
-
ordained to fight. It looks so small. It looks
-
so simple, but it's actually huge. And see, I've
-
personally learned that supernatural breakthrough
-
is packaged in small requests from God. Will
-
you be obedient? As I was reflecting on these
-
verses this week, God took me back to New Year's
-
Day 2010. Back on New Year's Day 2010, our community
-
of faith, which was a small community of faith
-
back then, probably 150 people, about 25 of us
-
gathered down at Riverbottom. January 1st, we
-
were giving away hot chocolate and coffee to
-
all the crazy people that were doing the polar
-
bear plunge. Right? I was sitting there serving,
-
you know, just giving away hot chocolate coffee
-
to people that were preparing to be frigid as
-
they jumped into that cold water. And then suddenly
-
I heard the voice of God say to me, hey, Chris,
-
you need to get in that water. And when I heard
-
that audible voice, I quickly said, get behind
-
me, Satan. And we all laughed, but that voice
-
kept coming back. You need to get in the water.
-
You need to get in the water. So then I quickly
-
began to realize if it keeps coming back, it
-
must not be Satan. It must be God. And as much
-
as I was fighting it because I despise cold water,
-
I quickly became obedient, grabbed a Batman costume,
-
threw it on from the October Fall Fest, ran and
-
jumped in the freezing cold water, and I was
-
cold. You say, Chris, why the Batman suit? Because
-
I was insecure, man. I wasn't getting in that
-
water, just me. And that was part of my problem.
-
See, for four years, I had been planning this
-
church, and I quickly realized that God was trying
-
to show me that I was more worried about what
-
people thought of me and what people thought
-
of the church than what God wanted to do through
-
me. And he had to humble me, and he had to break
-
me, and he had to say, hey, Chris, it doesn't
-
matter. It doesn't matter what people say. Will
-
you be obedient to me? And I quickly put on that
-
Batman suit and jumped in. Because see, quite
-
often the mountains that everybody wants God
-
to move generally require for us to take a step
-
of faith. And God wants to see how we steward
-
the little things. How do you steward the small
-
things that God gives you? Imagine if David would
-
have said no to his dad's request. Hey, take
-
this cheese, this bread to your brothers. What
-
if he would have said no? See, this was a critical
-
conversation, especially when you consider what
-
happened in 1 Samuel chapter 16 when we read
1 Samuel 16 chapter mention
-
this. The prophet Samuel came to Jesse's house
-
and said, I'm looking for the next king. Bring
-
me all your sons. In the same way, all seven
-
of Jesse's sons were presented to Samuel, but
-
Samuel said to Jesse, the Lord has not chosen
-
any of these. Then Samuel has to ask Jesse a
-
question that you shouldn't have to ask any father.
-
Are these all your sons? Oh yeah, there's the
-
youngest one that's out in the fields watching
-
the sheep and goats. Send for him at once. Notice
-
what Samuel says here. We will not sit down and
-
eat until he arrives. I mean, Samuel's the man.
-
He makes all seven of David's younger brothers
-
straight up stand in rejection until David arrives.
-
And think about how long it took David to get
-
from the fields to the house. They're just standing
-
there like, I just can't believe this is happening.
-
So Jesse sent for him. He was dark and handsome
-
with beautiful eyes. And the Lord said, this
-
is the one anoint him. See, this was a destiny
-
moment in David's life. Samuel anoints his king,
-
right? He knows he's going to be king. And then
-
he get a request from his father. Remember, he's
-
out in the fields and he gets another request.
-
And I wonder if David thought, all right, he's
-
going to apologize for not inviting me to meet
-
Samuel. He's going to say, I'm sorry. I'm sorry
-
I didn't believe you were worthy to be the next
-
king. But that's not what he says. He says, hey,
-
can you go serve your brothers some cheese and
-
some bread? And let's be honest, for you and
-
me, if we knew we were going to be the next king,
-
I believe for many of us, our response would
-
be, do you know who you're talking to? Do you
-
know I'm the next king of Israel? I mean, don't
-
you see the oil literally dripping off of my
-
beard? And you want me to deliver a door dash
-
order to my brothers? I'm the king. But David
-
doesn't say that. What does David say? He straight
-
up pulls a Chick -fil -A on us and he says, my
-
pleasure. If my father, that's funny right there.
-
If my father has a request for me, my pleasure.
-
Whatever my father wants me to do, it's my pleasure.
-
David was saying, I'm not too prideful to deliver
-
this cheese and this bread to my brothers, even
-
though I'm going to be the next king of Israel.
-
What is David teaching us in this conversation?
-
Church, we need to have a heart of humility.
-
So ask yourself, when God requests something
-
of you, is your response my pleasure? Or is it,
-
who are you talking to, God? You want me to serve
-
in church? I don't like to get up early. It's
-
my day off. You mean serve kids? What do you
-
mean? Hold a door, take out the trash, my pants
-
might get dirty. No wonder God can't move in
-
your life when we're so full of pride. And unfortunately,
-
here's the problem. Some people will never step
-
into their purpose, not because they can't knock
-
down a big giant named Goliath, but it's because
-
they can't knock down a big giant named pride.
-
And that's why Paul reminds us in Philippians,
-
don't be selfish, don't try to impress others.
-
Church, be humble. Think of others as better
-
than yourselves. Don't look out for your own
-
interests, but take an interest in others too.
-
Who have you taken an interest in this past week?
-
David is showing us that a heart of humility
-
when he tells his father, if this is what you
-
want me to do, it's my pleasure, I'll do it.
-
Even though I'm the next king of Israel and have
-
been anointed king, I will deliver this food
-
to my brothers. And look what happens when he
-
drops it off. He drops off the order to his brothers.
-
And after he drops it off, right at that moment,
-
it so happens that Goliath comes out and he starts
-
taunting the children of Israel like he'd been
-
doing for 40 days. And as soon as David sees
-
it, he's like, wait a minute. What's going on
-
here? Which leads us to our second conversation.
-
See, godly vision inspires victorious living.
-
Continuing in 1 Samuel, And isn't it interesting?
-
that David heard the exact same words that the
-
other soldiers heard, but he had a completely
-
different response. See, what caused the soldiers
-
to be stuck in fear caused David to rise up to
-
the moment. And when you've been talking to God
-
and are full of the Holy Spirit, you walk into
-
rooms differently. When you know who you are
-
and whose you are, I'm telling you, you respond
-
differently. And David was responding because
-
his ear was tuned in to what I call the frequency
-
of faith. When you are walking by faith and not
-
by sight, you respond differently than other
-
people. And David was like, wait a minute. This
-
is a problem. There's no way I'm going to let
-
this Philistine talk about my God that way. David
-
heard the same thing, but had a different response.
-
And when you're tuned in to God, And when you're
-
tuned in and all that God wants to do through
-
you, like David was, remember, what was David
-
doing? He was in the fields, right? He was a
-
shepherd. He was constantly communicating with
-
God, worshiping God, writing and recording Psalms.
-
He was in close connection. And that's why David
-
then turns to the soldiers and says this, 1 Samuel
-
17, 26 to 27, David asked the soldier standing
-
nearby, what will a man get for killing this
-
Philistine and ending his defiance of Israel?
-
Who is this pagan Philistine anyway that he's
-
allowed to defy the armies of the living God?
-
And these men gave David the same reply. They
-
said, yes, that is the reward for killing him.
-
And of course the reward was they would be seated
-
with the king. David hears Goliath talking and
-
his immediate response is, what is going to be
-
done for the man that defeats him? In other words,
-
David already sees himself defeating the giant.
-
He doesn't have... To just have a heart of humility.
-
See, he has a vision for victory. He wasn't stuck
-
in fear. He already sees himself defeating the
-
giant. So he goes, hey, I want to know what the
-
man gets for defeating the giant because I'm
-
that man. He knew it. I don't know who this is
-
for today, but God told me to tell you, you got
-
to have a godly vision for victorious living.
-
If you're struggling today, chances are your
-
vision is too small. And for many of you here
-
today, facing giants, you're being defeated by
-
the giant because you can't see the victory on
-
the other side. David already saw it. The soldiers,
-
they were focused on something else. In fact,
-
the writer in 1 Samuel, he goes into great detail
-
explaining Goliath's helmet, his armor, and his
-
shield. And the reason he goes into great detail
-
is because he's trying to show us what the soldiers
-
have been focusing on. They've been focusing
-
on fear. Goliath the Bible tells us was covered
-
from head to toe in bronze scales. That was his
-
armor. You know what else is covered in scales?
-
A serpent. And in Hebrew the word bronze references
-
a poisonous snake. See the author doesn't want
-
us just to see a small guy versus a big guy.
-
They want us to realize that daily, church, we
-
are staring down an enemy, a serpent that wants
-
to steal, kill, and destroy. We have to realize
-
whatever we focus on the most, that's what's
-
going to grow in our life. And David says, I
-
don't care about his shield, his sword, or his
-
armor. I just know one thing, that the God I
-
serve is able to take him down so he saw himself
-
winning the battle. He had a vision for victory.
-
Can I ask you something? Do you see yourself
-
winning? When you gather in worship, do you extend
-
your arms and say, yes, God, I'm winning. I worship
-
you. Do you see your marriage being restored?
-
Do you see your children coming back to God?
-
Do you see it? Because if you don't see it, it's
-
going to be hard to step into it. Proverbs 20,
-
19, where there is no vision, the people perish.
-
You've got to have a vision for victory. And
-
church, ever since 2010, when I jumped into that
-
water, God has been doing miracles in our community
-
of faith. 20 years ago, we planted this church,
-
right? And we've seen the miraculous and the
-
supernatural happen time and time and time again.
-
We've seen thousands baptized in the name of
-
the Father and the Son of the Holy Spirit. We
-
broke ground on a building at the height of COVID
-
when everyone told me it was stupid and you shouldn't
-
do it. In 2025, we were out of parking and we
-
began to pray for land. And guess what? God moved
-
a mountain and we got land. We're out of space
-
in our building. God provided a way and we now
-
have a balcony. The point is, God is getting
-
our attention. He's on the move in our community
-
of faith. He's working in people's lives. And
-
he desires for all of us to grab a hold of a
-
vision to reach people. who are broken and forgotten,
-
need hope. And our heart needs to break for them
-
so that we can begin to live victorious lives.
-
If you're not living a victorious life, chances
-
are your vision's too small. And I want to remind
-
you tonight, I'm doing a four -week class, six
-
o 'clock every Sunday night in October called
-
Naturally Supernatural. And the theme for tonight
-
as I kick off this four -week teaching class
-
is the vision of Jesus. So if you need some renewed
-
vision, show up tonight at six, your life will
-
be radically changed. Even beyond what God's
-
gonna do in your life this morning. Because in
-
your mind right now, some of you are thinking,
-
well, wait a minute. I'm struggling financially.
-
My marriage is on the rocks. My job is meaningless.
-
My children are struggling. There's all these
-
giants around me, Chris. How do I get this vision?
-
Well, you gotta realize you're a son or daughter
-
of the king. And because you're a son or daughter
-
of the king, you're an heir, Romans 8. For his
-
spirit joins with our spirit to affirm that we
-
are God's children. And since we are his children,
-
we are his heirs. In fact, together with Christ,
-
we are heirs to God's glory. But if we share
-
his glory, we also must share his suffering.
-
Yes, Jesus told us there's going to be trouble.
-
But if you're in a relationship with Jesus, you're
-
God's heir. That means you are rightfully entitled
-
to receive an inheritance, a position, a promise
-
from God. And the Bible says this about your
-
life. You're more than a conqueror. Which means
-
when we experience an overwhelming sense of fear
-
and doubt when faced with a giant, we can also
-
experience overwhelming victory, not merely surviving
-
trials or giants, but defeating them. And it
-
signifies that through God's love, hardships
-
are transformed into purpose, making believers
-
victors over fear, sin, death, doubt, anxiety,
-
rather than being a victim. It's time to change
-
our outlook. Let's get a godly vision that leads
-
us to victorious living, which leads us to our
-
third conversation. Church, you need to identify
-
the real enemy. Continuing in 1 Samuel 17, but
-
when David's oldest brother Eliab heard David
-
talking to the men, he was angry. What are you
-
doing around here anyway, he demanded. What about
-
those few sheep you're supposed to be taking
-
care of? I know about your pride and deceit.
-
You just want to see the battle. What have I
-
done now? David replied, I was only asking a
-
question. And you know Eliab is speaking bad
-
when he's talking about how little David's sheep
-
are, right? Who cares about your little sheep
-
in the field? Have you ever had somebody just
-
disqualify you from something because you're
-
just little, unimportant, insignificant? Where
-
have you left those little sheep? Eliab's angry
-
with David. And then he blames him, accuses him
-
of being prideful. I know the pride in your heart.
-
You just came here to see the battle. And it's
-
amazing what David says back to him. He says,
-
man, what have I done now? In other words, this
-
isn't the first time that Eliab had done this.
-
And I love the Bible because the Bible gives
-
us clues as to why Eliab was jealous. Don't forget,
-
when Samuel came to anoint the next king, Guess
-
who the first person he looked at was? 1 Samuel
-
16, when they arrived, Samuel took one look at
-
Eliab and thought, he's the Lord's anointed.
-
But the Lord said to Samuel, don't judge by his
-
appearance or height, for I've rejected him.
-
The Lord doesn't see the things the way you see
-
them. People judge by outward appearance, but
-
the Lord looks at the heart. And we have to realize
-
when someone that is close to us speaks words
-
of negativity and death over us, it can stay
-
with us for a lifetime. When we hear words like,
-
you'll always be a loser. You're such a disappointment.
-
You're drunk and will always be a drunk. Right?
-
Those words can destroy us. And that's the thief's
-
purpose. That's the serpent's purpose is to steal,
-
kill, and destroy. And when death has spoken
-
over us, we have to respond like David responded.
-
What did he do? Did he fight back? Did he make
-
a post? He just turned away. He just turned his
-
back on Iliam. And he's proving that he identified
-
his real enemy. See, he understands his brother,
-
Iliab. It's not his real enemy. The enemy was
-
the giant behind Iliab. You know, the giant,
-
the snake, the serpent that uses other people
-
to attack us. David just turned his back because
-
he knew his real enemy. And hear me, this is
-
important. Church, we have to identify the real
-
enemy. And let me remind you, another Jesus follower
-
is not your enemy. 1 John 4, 20, if someone says,
-
I love God, but hates a fellow believer, that
-
person is a liar. For we do not love people.
-
For if we do not love people, we can see. How
-
can we love God whom we cannot see? See, there's
-
a bigger devil to fight. And I pray, it's my
-
prayer that the church would wake up, the church,
-
big C church, and stop fighting each other and
-
pointing fingers at each other and wasting all
-
their energy towards fighting an enemy that isn't
-
real. The enemy is trying to steal, kill, and
-
destroy. And if we would focus all our efforts
-
on tearing him down, then change would happen.
-
David would have missed his destiny if he would
-
have grabbed his sling and five stones and began
-
to swing him at his brother. Because that fight
-
would have taken him out of the fight that he
-
was supposed to have with Goliath, which leads
-
us to our fourth conversation. God's armor is
-
your advantage in this battle. 1 Samuel 17, continue.
-
Don't worry about this Philistine, David told
-
Saul. I'll go fight him. Don't be ridiculous,
-
Saul replied. There's no way you can fight this
-
Philistine and possibly win. You're only a boy.
-
He's been a man of war since his youth. And it's
-
so funny here. Have you ever had somebody project
-
their own fears onto you? Right? It happens every
-
day. Just because they were scared to do it,
-
now they want to try to tell us how we can't
-
do it. Saul, he starts giving David a history
-
of Goliath. He's been killing people since he
-
was young. And that's what the enemy will do.
-
He'll start giving you a history of the giants
-
in your family's history and the things that
-
have taken other people out. You'll never be
-
successful. You didn't even graduate from college.
-
How can you be a good father? You never even
-
saw a good example. You can't defeat alcoholism.
-
Do you know how many people in your family it's
-
taken out? Saul starts giving him a history of
-
Goliath. But David, because he knew who he had
-
been talking to, he had a history with God. His
-
relationship was based on Jesus, which was his
-
first priority. And David's saying, well, I got
-
a history with God. And that's all that matters.
-
Continuing in 1 Samuel 17, David persisted. I've
-
been taking care of my father's sheep and goats,
-
he said. When a lion or a bear comes to steal
-
a lamb from the flock, I go after it with a club
-
and rescue the lamb from its mouth. And if the
-
animal turns on me, I catch it by the jaw and
-
club it to death. I've done this to both lions
-
and bears, and I'll do it to this pagan Philistine
-
too, who has defied the armies of the living
-
God. The Lord who rescued me from the claws of
-
the lion and the bear will rescue me from this
-
Philistine. And finally, Saul consented. All
-
right, go ahead, he said, and may the Lord be
-
with you. David had history with God. He said,
-
I'm convinced the same God that helped me defeat
-
the lions and the bears in those battles will
-
help me defeat this giant. And Saul sends him
-
out. And as he sends him out, though, he pauses
-
and he says, oh, wait, wait, wait. You should
-
put on my armor. Go out there and fight this
-
giant with my armor. And just imagine for a second,
-
put yourself in David's shoes. David's life has
-
been spent in the fields. Right? All he knew
-
was animals. And now he's standing in front of
-
the king. And the king literally puts his armor
-
on David. It's the equivalent of me walking in
-
to the Ravens locker room today. And Lamar taking
-
his jersey off and putting it on me. And saying,
-
lead us to victory. Just like I did against the
-
Cowboys last week. Just kidding. And we laugh.
-
Right? We laugh. But that's the equivalent. I
-
mean, David probably looked in the mirror and
-
it's just like glowing. I've never seen armor
-
like this. I've never fought a giant like this.
-
I've never had a bigger battle. Maybe I need
-
to try this armor. But let's continue. David
-
put it on, strapped his sword over it, and took
-
a step or two to see what it was like, for he
-
had never worn such things before. I can't go
-
in these, he protested to Saul. I'm not used
-
to them. So David took them off again. He picked
-
up five smooth stones from a stream and put them
-
into a shepherd's bag, then armed only with a
-
shepherd's staff and sling, he started across
-
the valley to fight the Philistine. See, church,
-
here's the truth that we all need to understand.
-
We can't grab our own weapons until we stop trying
-
to be someone else. We have to stop trying to
-
be someone else because God has given each and
-
every one of us weapons and giftings and talents,
-
but so many people, they want to be someone else.
-
And listen, I'm a horrible Stephen Furtick. I'm
-
not a real good John Wimber, but I'm the best
-
Chris Schlatterbeck you've ever seen in your
-
life because I'm the only one, right? And anytime
-
I get in a battle, I gotta use my weapons, right?
-
I can't use your weapons. I gotta use my weapons.
-
And somebody, what weapons do I have? Well, Ephesians
-
6 says, be strong in the Lord and his mighty
-
power, put on all of God's. Armor so you can
-
stand firm against strategies of the devil. You're
-
not fighting against flesh and blood enemies,
-
but against evil rulers and authorities in the
-
unseen world, against mighty powers in the dark
-
world, and against evil spirits in heavenly places.
-
Church, put on every piece of God's armor. Then
-
after the battle, you'll be able to stand firm.
-
And I want to challenge you. Are you prioritizing
-
your relationship with Jesus? Because if you're
-
not, then you have no armor. You're walking through
-
life bare and weak, and it's got to become a
-
part of who we are, which leads us to our fifth
-
and final conversation. There was power in the
-
name. Use it. Continuing in 1 Samuel 17, Goliath
-
walked out toward David with a shield bare ahead
-
of him, sneering in contempt at this rudy -faced
-
boy. Am I the dog he roared at David that you
-
come at me with a stick? And he cursed David
-
by the names of his How many of you know the
-
enemy loves to mock you? Right? His native language
-
is lying. And if he had a second language, it
-
would be mocking. And David is feeling the mocking
-
of the giant. Come over here. I'll give your
-
flesh to the birds and wild animals. Goliath
-
yelled. David replied to the Philistine, you
-
come to me with sword, spear, and javelin, but
-
I come at you in the name of the Lord of heaven's
-
armies, the God of the armies of Israel, whom
-
you have defied. And David says to him, And this
-
is the conversation. This is the conversation
-
that many of you need to hear today. You come
-
at me with sword and spear, but I come at you
-
in the name of the Lord God Almighty. Then he
-
threw the rock, which got me thinking this week.
-
Did David throw a rock? Or did David throw a
-
name? Because it makes sense to say, you come
-
at me with sword and spear. I come at you with
-
my slingshot. But he doesn't say slingshot. He
-
said, I come at you in the name of the Lord God
-
Almighty. He threw the rock. So did he throw
-
a name or did he throw a rock? Some people would
-
just say it was a rock. And there's actually
-
some scientists that's really amazing, believe
-
it or not, who look at scripture through a scientific
-
lens and many of them debate the truthfulness
-
of this story. In fact, they say it's false.
-
They say there's no possible way that a boy could
-
have killed a giant with a rock and they have
-
a whole report that you can find for yourself.
-
on how it's impossible. Listen to some of the
-
aspects of the report. They said to David, with
-
the rock the size of a baseball and with the
-
slingshot, the fast that he could have released
-
it would have been with the trajectory of about
-
90 miles per hour. That's pretty fast. And if
-
you take a projectile going 90 miles per hour
-
and use Newton's second law of motion and take
-
into effect coefficient of restitution, a projectile
-
at that size at 90 miles per hour would generate
-
about 3 ,000 pounds of force. as it was released.
-
That is, if it was traveling the distance of
-
a pitcher to whom played, which is 60 feet, 6
-
inches. But since Goliath is at least twice the
-
distance, one also has to take into effect the
-
drag of the distance of the ball that's working
-
against the velocity of the force. Therefore,
-
since he's further away, what was generally related
-
at 3 ,000 pounds now has been reduced itself
-
arguably to 1 ,000 pounds because of the distance.
-
That is, if David is throwing it straight. The
-
problem is Goliath is taller than David, which
-
means the angle of the projectile from which
-
he launched it had to be at least 45 degrees,
-
which means that now the rock is working against
-
gravity, which has also reduced the force that
-
the rock has been released. So what was 3 ,000
-
pounds of force has now been arguably reduced
-
to about 500 pounds of force. But you must remember,
-
there's an armor bearer who stands in front of
-
Goliath. who would have lifted the shield to
-
take the projectile off course, which would have
-
reduced the force to at least 50 pounds and taken
-
it off course to the direction headed toward
-
Goliath's head. But if David could throw it,
-
and if it did work against the drag, if it did
-
counter the weight, and if it did go against
-
the coefficient of restitution, if it was not
-
off course and still aimed at Goliath's head,
-
Goliath is wearing a helmet. And the projectile
-
that started with 3 ,000 pounds of force ended
-
up hitting the bronze helmet with only 50 pounds
-
of force, and that's not enough to kill a giant.
-
So, how can a young boy with one rock, working
-
against gravity, working against Newton's law
-
of motion, working against the coefficient of
-
restitution, working against their drag, being
-
deflected by an armor -bearer, hitting a bronze
-
helmet, how could he kill a giant? And I came
-
to tell you and all the scientists. He didn't
-
just throw a rock. He also threw a name. And
-
there's power in that name. So whatever you're
-
facing today, don't just practice humility. Don't
-
just have a vision of victory. Don't just know
-
your enemy or put on God's armor. You need to
-
have a name that you throw, a name that is higher
-
than every other name. And you better throw that
-
name against fear. And you better throw that
-
name against worry and anxiety and doubt. And
-
you better throw that name against your giant,
-
just as David did. 1 Samuel 17. Goliath moved
-
closer to the attack and David quickly ran out
-
to meet him, reaching into the shepherd's bag
-
and taking out a stone. He hold it with a sling
-
and hit the Philistine in the forehead. The stone
-
sank in and Goliath stumbled and fell face down
-
on the ground. See, long before David had this
-
confrontation, there were conversations that
-
preceded this confrontation. But when ultimately
-
it got down to it, he knew the power that was
-
above every other name. And Philippians tells
-
us that God elevated him to the place of highest
-
honor and gave him authority that the name above
-
every other name, at the name of Jesus, every
-
knee will bow in heaven, on earth, and under
-
the earth. And if you call on that name today,
-
no matter what you are facing, what you are going
-
through, he's able to save you. He's able to
-
heal you and he's able to deliver you. And how
-
do I know that? Let's go to the New Testament.
-
Peter said, I don't have any silver or gold for
-
you, but I'll give you what I have in the name
-
of Jesus Christ of Nazareth. Get up and walk.
-
And my challenge to you today is this. Get up
-
and walk in abundance. Get up. Come on, stand
-
up. Get up. Get up. Get up. Get up and walk in.
-
Abundance. Now, humor me by a show of hands.
-
Who's going through a battle or facing a giant
-
right now? Put them up. Put them up real high.
-
You're facing a giant right now. Okay, keep them
-
up. All right, church, you see everybody? Men
-
with men, women with women. We're not praying
-
until you get with someone. Let's go. Keep your
-
hands up until someone puts a hand on their shoulder.
-
Thank you. Come on, let's go. Move. Walk in abundance.
-
When someone puts their hand on your shoulder,
-
put your hand down. I got a gentleman back here.
-
I got two gentlemen back here. Let's go. Move.
-
I got a gentleman over here. I got a bunch of
-
gentlemen. Come on, gentlemen. I got a gentleman.
-
You got Bill? All right, put your hand down,
-
Bill. You're confusing me. Thank you. I got a
-
lady here that needs prayer. Thank you. Is everyone
-
covered? I need a lady over here on my right.
-
Somebody, please, lady. Lady? Somebody? You got
-
her? Right here on my right. Thank you. Right
-
here on my right. It's Angela. Anybody else?
-
We got it? Over here. Over here. Is it a lady?
-
I need a lady over here on my left. Somebody.
-
Got it? All right. Thank you. All right. Here
-
we go. Holy Spirit, come. Now, if you're getting
-
prayer, I want you to start speaking the name
-
of Jesus. Because there's power in that name.
-
So speak to that giant in Jesus' name. We speak
-
against the mountains, the giants that each person
-
is facing today. Radically change lives, God.
-
May there be testimonies from this Sunday morning
-
of radical life change that inspires others to
-
not only want to pursue you, Jesus, but to continue
-
to do the stuff. We're grateful, God, for how
-
you move in this place, that this is a house
-
of miracles, God. And we pray that those giants
-
are torn down in Jesus' name. We speak hope,
-
meaning, purpose, and love into each and every
-
heart. In Jesus' name, and we said together,
-
amen. Amen. All right. Now, this is the first
-
Sunday of the month. We're going to share in
-
communion. So if you need an element, quietly,
-
we're not done. If you need an element, put one
-
hand up. Trinity's coming around. People are
-
coming around. Just keep your hand up. We'll
-
make sure you get it. One hand up so we can get
-
you the element. Thank you. Now, some of you
-
are thinking, well, Chris, what's communion have
-
to do with this talk? This has everything to
-
do with this talk because communion, the broken
-
body and the shed blood is what gives us the
-
name above every other name. That if Jesus wouldn't
-
have died on the cross, we wouldn't then have
-
the Holy Spirit living inside of us so that we
-
can overcome and tear down giants. Amen? So that's
-
why I remind you every time we share communion
-
together, there's power in communion. Because
-
Jesus told us, he said, church, remember my broken
-
body. Remember my shed blood. Search your heart
-
and make it right so that you can then walk in
-
abundance. So in the night he was betrayed, Jesus
-
took bread. He broke it. He gave it to his disciples
-
and said, take, eat. This is my body, which is
-
broken for you and do it in remembrance of me.
-
Let's eat. Likewise, after supper, he took a
-
cup of wine, said, this is my blood, which is
-
shed for you and for many for the forgiveness
-
of sins. And when you drink it, do it in remembrance
-
of me. Hold on. Search our hearts, God. Reveal
-
to us any pride, any sin, any judgment, any unforgiveness
-
in our heart, God. Reveal to us, reveal it to
-
us, God, so we can get right with you. Forgive
-
us, God, for not walking in obedience to you.
-
God, restore. my relationship with you. In Jesus'
-
name, let's drink. God, I'm grateful for this
-
community of faith. I'm grateful for the life
-
change we experienced today. Before we go, I
-
have several words of knowledge I want to share
-
with you. Stay in a sense of prayer. If you're
-
here and you're struggling with anger, you have
-
pain on the outer side of your left hip, possibly
-
need hip replacement surgery. You have a right
-
shin that's fractured. The inner side of your
-
left foot is painful. You have migraines so bad
-
that you can't see straight. You're experiencing
-
pain just below your left knee. You're struggling
-
with itchy and watery eyes that makes it hard
-
to see. You have a skin situation on your hand
-
that's making your skin white like dandruff.
-
So if any of those are you, our prayer team will
-
be on my left and my right to pray for those
-
needs. But before we go, before we go, I want
-
to pray a simple prayer like I pray every single
-
week because here's the reality. You can't defeat
-
any giant or go anywhere in your life without
-
a relationship with Jesus. And if you're here
-
this morning, no matter what brought you here,
-
a van, a car, a family, or a friend, and you're
-
not in a relationship with God, this is your
-
opportunity. This is your opportunity to tear
-
down any giant in your life because you'll then
-
have the power of God living inside of you. Amen?
-
Let's pray. Jesus, I'm broken. I'm full of doubt,
-
shame, regret, sin. Change me. Forgive me. I
-
believe you're God's son. I believe you died
-
for me. I believe you're alive today. Make me
-
new. Set me free. Fill me with your spirit. Help
-
me, God, to serve others. In Jesus' name, amen.
-
So if you prayed that prayer for the first time,
-
listen, see me, see Rudy, go to the Welcome Hub,
-
do something. Today is Start With Why directly
-
after this service. If you're new and want to
-
learn about our church, I'd love to meet with
-
you. Go to the Welcome Hub. This is going to
-
be a great series. God bless you guys. I'm going
-
there. Let me get to the door. Love you.
