  1. Let's read from Colossians chapter 2, verses 1-7.

    Colossians 2:1–7

  2. This is Paul's letter to the Colossians, verses 1-7.

  3. !

  4. This is Paul's letter to the Colossians, verses 1-7.

  5. And we read this,

  6. For I want you to know how great a struggle I have for you,

  7. and for those at Laodicea,

  8. and for all who have not seen me face to face,

  9. that their hearts may be encouraged,

  10. being knit together in love,

  11. to reach all the riches of full assurance of understanding

  12. and the knowledge of God's mystery, which is Christ,

  13. in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.

  14. I say this in order that no one may delude you with plausible arguments,

  15. for though I am absent in body, yet I am with you in spirit,

  16. rejoicing to see your good order

  17. and the firmness of your faith in Christ.

  18. Therefore, as you received Christ,

  19. Christ Jesus the Lord,

  20. so walk in Him,

  21. rooted and built up in Him,

  22. and established in the faith,

  23. just as you were taught,

  24. abounding in thanksgiving.

  25. This is God's holy word.

  26. We turn this evening to Colossians chapter 2

    Colossians 2 chapter mention

  27. and the first seven verses,

  28. that passage that Corey read for us.

  29. Stay, don't stray.

  30. It's actually the name of a stay-put primer

  31. for concealers and eyeshadows.

  32. The advertising blurb says,

  33. this dual action power primer

  34. works 360 degrees around the eyes

  35. to make concealers and eyeshadows stay put.

  36. Concealers don't crease,

  37. eyeshadows stay vibrant and true.

  38. Well, my knowledge of female cosmetic products

  39. is, I am sure you will be glad to know,

  40. fairly limited.

  41. In fact, it's practically non-existent.

  42. But what I can gather from stay, don't stray

  43. is that it's something applied to the skin

  44. to make sure that what is put on next

  45. stays put.

  46. I imagine it to be some kind of cream or glue

  47. that keeps your eyeliner in the right place

  48. and stops it running and spoiling the effect.

  49. I'm glad I've shared that with you this evening.

  50. Well, by now you are wondering

  51. if I've lost my mind.

  52. What on earth am I doing

  53. speaking about a particular type of makeup?

  54. But it's this idea of stay, don't stray

  55. that I think helpfully sums up

  56. the message of Paul's letter to the Colossians.

  57. Paul is writing to remind these Christian believers

  58. that all they need to grow and mature

  59. as Christians is to be found

  60. in the Lord Jesus Christ.

  61. They don't need to look elsewhere.

  62. They need to keep their focus on Jesus.

  63. He needs to be at the center.

  64. They need to stay and stick with Him.

  65. And in many ways, this was the burden

  66. of Paul's work as an apostle

  67. and as a servant of Christ.

  68. He longed to see men and women

  69. come into a relationship with Jesus

  70. and find in Him their rest

  71. and their salvation.

  72. And even though in one sense

  73. the Colossian believers

  74. and those at Laodicea

  75. were strangers to him,

  76. nonetheless, Paul struggled

  77. or agonized in prayer for them.

  78. He longed to see them grow and mature.

  79. And as we noted last week,

  80. this is the great aim,

  81. really, of pastoral ministry,

  82. to present everyone mature in Christ.

  83. Paul writes here,

  84. I want you to know the struggle

  85. I have for you

  86. and those at Laodicea

  87. and for all who have not seen me

  88. face to face,

  89. that their hearts may be encouraged,

  90. being knit together in love

  91. to reach all the riches

  92. of full assurance of understanding

  93. and the knowledge of God's mystery,

  94. which is Christ,

  95. in whom are hidden

  96. all the treasures of wisdom

  97. and knowledge.

  98. Of course, as we know,

  99. there were those

  100. in and around the Colossian church

  101. that had a very different message

  102. to the Apostle Paul.

  103. Paul says in verse 4,

  104. I say this in order

  105. that no one may delude you

  106. with plausible arguments.

  107. For though I am absent in body,

  108. I am with you in spirit,

  109. rejoicing to see your good order

  110. and the firmness of your faith

  111. in Christ.

  112. These other teachers

  113. promoted a wisdom

  114. and a knowledge

  115. apart from

  116. or supplemental

  117. to the Lord Jesus Christ.

  118. Their arguments

  119. were indeed plausible.

  120. They had a lot of fine words,

  121. a lot of high-sounding phrases

  122. rolled off their tongues.

  123. They spoke of spiritual fullness

  124. and abundance.

  125. They pandered to people's pride

  126. and sense of insecurity.

  127. They offered secret knowledge

  128. and enlightenment.

  129. But Paul wanted the Colossians

  130. to stay with Christ

  131. and not move away from Him.

  132. He wanted them to remain secure

  133. in the apostolic gospel.

  134. He wanted them to keep Jesus

  135. firmly at the center.

  136. Because Christ is all

  137. that His people need.

  138. He is enough.

  139. In Him are all the treasures

  140. of wisdom and knowledge.

  141. And so, what we have

  142. in the verses that follow

  143. is Paul's exhortation

  144. to the Colossians.

  145. And one writer calls it

  146. a concise summary

  147. of the whole letter.

  148. How are they going to move forward

  149. in faith and grow to maturity?

  150. How are they going to stay,

  151. not stray?

  152. Well, we have it in verses 6 and 7.

  153. Therefore, as you received

  154. Christ Jesus the Lord,

  155. so walk in Him,

  156. rooted and built up in Him,

  157. and established in the faith,

  158. just as you were taught,

  159. abounding in thanksgiving.

  160. And it's really upon these verses

  161. that I want to land for a moment

  162. this evening.

  163. Because as I've said,

  164. these verses kind of sum up,

  165. encapsulate the message

  166. of the whole letter.

  167. Build your life on Jesus Christ.

  168. Here is Paul revealing to us

  169. the way of growth and maturity

  170. in the Christian life.

  171. How can we remain close to Jesus,

  172. even in a world where there are

  173. so many different voices

  174. clamoring for our attention?

  175. Here is how we too

  176. can stay, not stray.

  177. These words are applicable

  178. to us as individuals.

  179. I think they're also applicable

  180. to us as a church.

  181. As God's people,

  182. we must continue to press on

  183. towards growth and maturity

  184. in Christ.

  185. So let me summarize these verses

  186. under three brief headings,

  187. three key elements

  188. of Christian life and growth.

  189. Three words, as it were.

  190. The first word is the word,

  191. it is actually a word,

  192. I haven't actually made it up,

  193. relentlessness.

  194. There's a relentlessness

  195. about Christian life and growth.

  196. Therefore, as you received

  197. Christ Jesus the Lord,

  198. so walk in Him.

  199. Sometimes we say, don't we,

  200. start as you mean to go on.

  201. Here Paul says,

  202. go on as you started.

  203. Keep going in the same way

  204. that you began the Christian life.

  205. So how did the Christian life

  206. begin for the Colossians?

  207. Paul puts it very simply,

  208. very clearly.

  209. They received Christ Jesus the Lord.

  210. The word that Paul uses here

  211. for receiving Christ

  212. is a Greek word,

  213. paralambano.

  214. And it sounds like something

  215. that might be performed

  216. on Strictly Come Dancing.

  217. But no, it is not

  218. an exotic Latin American dance.

  219. The word is related

  220. to this idea of receiving

  221. a tradition from others.

  222. So what Paul is writing about here

  223. is more than just

  224. a subjective experience

  225. of receiving Christ

  226. into one's heart

  227. by the power of the Spirit.

  228. It's also about receiving

  229. the tradition

  230. or the teaching

  231. of the gospel.

  232. And you might recall

  233. that Paul writes

  234. about that gospel tradition,

  235. famously,

  236. 1 Corinthians 15.

  237. I deliver to you

  238. as of first importance

  239. what I also received,

  240. that Christ died for our sins

  241. in accordance with the Scriptures,

  242. that He was buried,

  243. that He was raised

  244. on the third day

  245. in accordance with the Scriptures.

  246. So receiving Christ Jesus,

  247. the Lord,

  248. involves both receiving

  249. the apostolic teaching

  250. about Jesus,

  251. that is the gospel,

  252. and believing it,

  253. as well as this heart submission

  254. to Jesus Christ as Lord.

  255. We receive the teaching

  256. about Him,

  257. who He is,

  258. what He has done

  259. in His life,

  260. death, and resurrection,

  261. as well as a personal union

  262. with Christ.

  263. Christ in us,

  264. the hope of glory.

  265. These two things

  266. really go together.

  267. Receiving Christ

  268. into our lives

  269. involves both doctrine

  270. and experience.

  271. The gospel

  272. that is preached

  273. and proclaimed

  274. is all about

  275. the Lord Jesus Christ.

  276. The one that we receive

  277. into our lives

  278. is none other

  279. than that self-same Jesus,

  280. the very Son of God.

  281. So becoming a Christian

  282. involves us believing

  283. certain things about Jesus,

  284. but more than that,

  285. it involves Him

  286. coming to live within us

  287. by His Spirit.

  288. The gospel,

  289. we've said this before,

  290. is not just about

  291. receiving kind of happiness,

  292. nice feelings,

  293. joy, and peace.

  294. It's all about

  295. receiving the Lord Jesus Christ.

  296. When people receive

  297. the gospel,

  298. they receive Him.

  299. To become a Christian

  300. is to receive Jesus Christ

  301. into your life.

  302. It is for Christ

  303. to come and live within you.

  304. That's how the New Testament

  305. speaks, isn't it?

  306. It's no longer I that live,

  307. says Paul,

  308. but Christ that lives

  309. within me.

  310. And this Jesus

  311. that we receive

  312. is not one of our own making.

  313. It's not a fantasy

  314. of our own thinking.

  315. He is Christ Jesus,

  316. the Lord.

  317. We receive Him.

  318. not just the parts

  319. that we like

  320. or we're drawn to.

  321. We don't get to pick and choose.

  322. Sometimes,

  323. when I was younger,

  324. I used to hear people

  325. say things like,

  326. oh,

  327. I accepted Jesus

  328. as my Savior,

  329. but not as Lord.

  330. And what they often

  331. believed by that

  332. was that they could have

  333. all their sins forgiven

  334. and then,

  335. you know,

  336. could just live

  337. any way we please.

  338. as if Jesus

  339. could be divided

  340. or separated.

  341. But Jesus Christ

  342. is always Savior and Lord.

  343. Christ and all His benefits

  344. come together.

  345. Calvin writes,

  346. the whole gospel

  347. is contained

  348. in Christ.

  349. It's all wrapped up in Him.

  350. He's at the center

  351. of it all.

  352. The Christian faith

  353. is not centered,

  354. really,

  355. on ethics

  356. or morality

  357. or philosophy.

  358. It's centered

  359. on the person

  360. of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  361. So,

  362. what Paul is saying here

  363. is that

  364. in the same way

  365. as you receive Jesus,

  366. so you are to continue

  367. in the Christian life.

  368. Walk in Him.

  369. Live in union

  370. with Jesus

  371. through faith

  372. in the gospel.

  373. You've been brought

  374. into a relationship

  375. with Jesus Christ.

  376. You have received Him,

  377. so don't deviate

  378. from that path.

  379. Don't change direction

  380. or switch to some other

  381. pattern or way of living.

  382. Don't be listening

  383. to other voices.

  384. The Christian life

  385. begins and continues

  386. with faith and trust

  387. in Jesus.

  388. It's all rooted in Him.

  389. Press on with Jesus.

  390. Keep on with Him.

  391. There is, you see,

  392. this relentlessness

  393. to Christian growth

  394. and maturity.

  395. It's a long obedience

  396. in the same direction.

  397. It's traveling

  398. with Jesus every day.

  399. As you receive Him,

  400. so go on with Him.

  401. Stick with Jesus.

  402. Be relentless

  403. in your fellowship

  404. with Him.

  405. And that's something

  406. that Jesus Himself

  407. spoke about

  408. with His disciples.

  409. Corrie read

  410. those verses

  411. as our invitation

  412. to worship.

  413. Abide in Me

  414. and I in you.

  415. As the branch

  416. cannot bear fruit

  417. by itself

  418. unless it abides

  419. in the vine,

  420. neither can you

  421. unless you abide

  422. in Me.

  423. I am the vine,

  424. you are the branches.

  425. Whoever abides in Me

  426. and I in him,

  427. He it is

  428. that bears much fruit.

  429. For apart from Me,

  430. you can do nothing.

  431. How do we grow

  432. and become

  433. productive as Christians?

  434. We abide

  435. or remain

  436. in the vine.

  437. We remain

  438. in a relationship

  439. with Jesus.

  440. We need to rest

  441. in

  442. and depend

  443. upon

  444. the Lord Jesus Christ

  445. at all times.

  446. There's an old

  447. Anglican prayer

  448. that says,

  449. Without thee,

  450. we are not able

  451. to please thee.

  452. We need to be

  453. relentless

  454. in this regard.

  455. We mustn't wander off.

  456. We need to stay,

  457. not stray.

  458. We must continue

  459. in Him,

  460. walking

  461. in Him,

  462. staying with Him

  463. and holding

  464. onto Him

  465. by faith

  466. alone.

  467. There's a relentlessness

  468. here

  469. about

  470. Christian

  471. growth.

  472. And that brings me

  473. to the second word here,

  474. steadfastness.

  475. There is a

  476. steadfastness

  477. about

  478. Christian

  479. life

  480. and growth.

  481. Look at

  482. what Paul says here,

  483. Rooted

  484. and built

  485. up in Him

  486. and established

  487. in the faith

  488. just

  489. as you were

  490. taught.

  491. So,

  492. Paul uses

  493. three

  494. separate metaphors

  495. to make this point.

  496. Rooted,

  497. built up,

  498. established,

  499. all related

  500. to this concept

  501. of stability.

  502. To grow,

  503. there must be

  504. stability.

  505. Without it,

  506. any growth

  507. may prove

  508. temporary

  509. or short-lived.

  510. And the metaphors

  511. he uses

  512. are drawn

  513. from the worlds

  514. of agriculture

  515. and architecture.

  516. He speaks

  517. of being rooted

  518. like a plant

  519. in the rich

  520. soil

  521. of Jesus Christ.

  522. A tree

  523. or plant

  524. does not flourish

  525. without being

  526. properly rooted

  527. and grounded

  528. in the soil.

  529. He then speaks

  530. of being built

  531. up in Christ

  532. and established

  533. in the faith.

  534. Here is something

  535. that is growing

  536. and being added

  537. to,

  538. and yet in order

  539. for that to happen

  540. effectively,

  541. foundations

  542. need to be

  543. established.

  544. In order for the

  545. plant to grow up,

  546. it needs roots

  547. to be put down.

  548. In order for the

  549. structure to be

  550. built up,

  551. the foundations

  552. have to be

  553. dug down.

  554. How true it is

  555. that in the

  556. Christian life,

  557. the only way up

  558. is down.

  559. to grow up,

  560. you have to dig

  561. down.

  562. Down into Christ,

  563. down into the

  564. grace of God,

  565. down into the

  566. fertile soil

  567. of the gospel,

  568. down into the

  569. bedrock

  570. of God's

  571. unchanging

  572. character.

  573. Proper roots

  574. and foundations

  575. are vital

  576. because it's

  577. these that give

  578. our lives

  579. stability and

  580. growth.

  581. If we are to

  582. grow and be

  583. built up,

  584. we need to be

  585. established

  586. in the

  587. faith.

  588. And when Paul

  589. mentions faith

  590. here, he's not

  591. referring to our

  592. action of trust

  593. and dependence

  594. on Christ.

  595. Crowley was

  596. speaking about

  597. that this

  598. morning.

  599. He's talking

  600. about the

  601. faith.

  602. That is the

  603. apostolic

  604. teaching.

  605. Jude in his

  606. letter speaks

  607. of the faith

  608. once and for

  609. all delivered

  610. to the saints.

  611. According to

  612. the New Testament,

  613. there is a

  614. body of truth

  615. that we can

  616. call the

  617. Christian faith.

  618. Luke,

  619. Acts 6,

    Acts 6:7

  620. verse 7,

  621. And the

  622. word of God

  623. continued to

  624. increase,

  625. and the

  626. number of

  627. the disciples

  628. multiplied

  629. greatly in

  630. Jerusalem,

  631. and a

  632. great many

  633. of the

  634. priests

  635. became

  636. obedient

  637. to

  638. the

  639. faith.

  640. Paul

  641. writes,

  642. Galatians

  643. 1.23,

  644. They only

  645. were hearing

  646. it said,

  647. He who

  648. used to

  649. persecute us

  650. is now

  651. preaching

  652. the faith.

  653. He once

  654. tried to

  655. destroy.

  656. From the

  657. outset of

  658. the Christian

  659. church,

  660. there has

  661. always been

  662. a recognizable,

  663. defensible

  664. gospel.

  665. There are

  666. things that

  667. are true

  668. and false

  669. about

  670. Christianity.

  671. There is

  672. only one

  673. Lord,

  674. one faith,

  675. one baptism,

  676. one God

  677. and Father

  678. of our

  679. Lord Jesus

  680. Christ.

  681. There is

  682. only one

  683. gospel.

  684. There is

  685. only one

  686. Christ.

  687. There is

  688. only one

  689. Savior.

  690. And

  691. stability and

  692. growth only

  693. come as

  694. we are

  695. established

  696. in Him

  697. and in

  698. this

  699. faith.

  700. And that's

  701. why we

  702. prize

  703. teaching

  704. highly in

  705. the church.

  706. Paul says,

  707. just as

  708. you were

  709. taught,

  710. the faith

  711. must be

  712. taught.

  713. I remember

  714. many years

  715. ago being

  716. at a

  717. conference

  718. where Dr.

  719. Jim

  720. Packer,

  721. Anglican

  722. theologian,

  723. was the

  724. speaker.

  725. And at the

  726. end there

  727. was an

  728. opportunity

  729. for

  730. questions.

  731. I was

  732. very young

  733. and so I

  734. plucked up

  735. the courage

  736. to ask

  737. him a

  738. question.

  739. And usually

  740. he asks

  741. some kind

  742. of really

  743. difficult

  744. question.

  745. So I

  746. said,

  747. I asked

  748. him what

  749. he thought

  750. the greatest

  751. need of the

  752. church was

  753. in our

  754. day and

  755. generation.

  756. That was

  757. my question

  758. to him.

  759. And without

  760. hesitating,

  761. he said

  762. this,

  763. to teach

  764. the gospel.

  765. That was

  766. his response.

  767. Teach

  768. the gospel.

  769. For God's

  770. people to

  771. grow,

  772. there must

  773. be the

  774. teaching

  775. of the

  776. gospel.

  777. All the

  778. treasures of

  779. knowledge and

  780. wisdom hidden

  781. in Christ are

  782. to be

  783. unpacked.

  784. We need to

  785. know the

  786. faith,

  787. or we

  788. will become

  789. prey to

  790. those who

  791. peddle

  792. falsehood and

  793. error.

  794. Mark

  795. Johnston,

  796. in his

  797. banner of

  798. truth commentary,

  799. shares the

  800. story of a

  801. friend who

  802. saw in his

  803. congregation,

  804. many in his

  805. congregation,

  806. delivered from

  807. a false

  808. gospel without

  809. actually having

  810. to directly

  811. criticize those

  812. who had taught

  813. it, their

  814. previous minister

  815. and others in

  816. the congregation.

  817. And when he

  818. asked his

  819. friend how he

  820. had managed

  821. to do this,

  822. his friend

  823. simply said

  824. this,

  825. if you want

  826. to show a

  827. line as

  828. crooked,

  829. just draw a

  830. straight line

  831. beside it.

  832. And that's

  833. what Paul is

  834. telling us

  835. here.

  836. The gospel

  837. is our

  838. straight line.

  839. And the

  840. word of

  841. Christ,

  842. the gospel,

  843. is vital to

  844. the health

  845. and well-being

  846. of churches

  847. and Christians

  848. because Jesus

  849. Christ himself

  850. is the very

  851. source of

  852. spiritual life

  853. and vitality.

  854. The problems

  855. and anxieties

  856. and difficulties

  857. we all experience

  858. in this life

  859. have,

  860. at the end

  861. of the day,

  862. their answer

  863. in him.

  864. Our great

  865. need is to

  866. know him

  867. better,

  868. to come

  869. to love

  870. him more.

  871. And so

  872. tonight you

  873. may be weighed

  874. down with

  875. the burden

  876. of your sins.

  877. Well,

  878. Jesus is

  879. the great

  880. burden-bearer.

  881. Maybe you're

  882. facing death.

  883. He's the

  884. firstborn

  885. from the

  886. dead.

  887. Are you

  888. weak?

  889. Christ is

  890. strong.

  891. Are we

  892. foolish?

  893. He is the

  894. wisdom of

  895. God.

  896. Are we

  897. in the

  898. dark?

  899. He's the

  900. very light

  901. of the

  902. world.

  903. Are we

  904. lost?

  905. He is the

  906. way.

  907. Are we

  908. tired and

  909. exhausted and

  910. weary?

  911. He is our

  912. rest.

  913. Are our lives

  914. stained with

  915. guilt?

  916. His blood

  917. makes the

  918. foulest clean.

  919. Of course,

  920. you do

  921. sometimes hear

  922. people say

  923. that Christianity

  924. is better

  925. caught than

  926. taught.

  927. Or as we

  928. say here in

  929. Scotland,

  930. better felt

  931. than

  932. telt.

  933. But it is a

  934. very dangerous

  935. thing to pit

  936. doctrine and

  937. experience against

  938. one another,

  939. because Christianity

  940. is both felt

  941. and telt.

  942. It's both

  943. caught and

  944. taught.

  945. Christianity

  946. that is all

  947. feelings,

  948. emotions,

  949. and experience

  950. will not

  951. long survive

  952. in this

  953. harsh and

  954. sometimes

  955. difficult world.

  956. And likewise,

  957. a Christianity

  958. that is purely

  959. cerebral,

  960. dominated only

  961. by head

  962. knowledge,

  963. will become

  964. dry and

  965. arid and

  966. stale.

  967. Martin Lloyd

  968. Jones wrote

  969. these words,

  970. to be a

  971. Christian is

  972. not only to

  973. believe the

  974. teaching of

  975. Christ and to

  976. practice it,

  977. it's not only to

  978. try to follow the

  979. pattern and

  980. example of

  981. Christ,

  982. Christ.

  983. It is to be so

  984. vitally related

  985. to Christ

  986. that His

  987. life and

  988. His power

  989. are working

  990. in us.

  991. It is to be

  992. in Christ.

  993. It is for

  994. Christ to

  995. be in

  996. us.

  997. So,

  998. Christian

  999. stability needs

  1000. both doctrine

  1001. and experience.

  1002. They go

  1003. together.

  1004. a long time

  1005. ago when I

  1006. was in the

  1007. Boys'

  1008. Brigade,

  1009. that is a

  1010. uniformed

  1011. Christian

  1012. organization

  1013. established in

  1014. 1883 by

  1015. Sir William

  1016. Alexander

  1017. Smith in

  1018. Glasgow.

  1019. That's for

  1020. those of you

  1021. who are not

  1022. in Scotland

  1023. or Northern

  1024. Ireland or

  1025. England.

  1026. England,

  1027. and in

  1028. the Boys'

  1029. Brigade,

  1030. the badge

  1031. is an

  1032. anchor.

  1033. And we

  1034. would sometimes

  1035. sing a

  1036. song based

  1037. on the

  1038. brigade

  1039. motto drawn

  1040. from Hebrews

  1041. 619,

  1042. sure and

  1043. steadfast.

  1044. I won't

  1045. sing it to

  1046. you.

  1047. You'll be

  1048. glad to

  1049. know.

  1050. Sure and

  1051. steadfast,

  1052. the brigade

  1053. boys'

  1054. motto,

  1055. clear.

  1056. That's our

  1057. watchword when

  1058. trouble and

  1059. trials are

  1060. near.

  1061. Friends,

  1062. that's the

  1063. idea.

  1064. The Christian

  1065. believer is

  1066. to be sure

  1067. and steadfast.

  1068. Stability.

  1069. So that even

  1070. when trouble

  1071. and trials

  1072. arise,

  1073. come near,

  1074. faith will

  1075. not be

  1076. uprooted or

  1077. destroyed.

  1078. Through our

  1079. union with

  1080. Christ and

  1081. by the

  1082. Holy Spirit,

  1083. Jesus

  1084. communicates

  1085. His life

  1086. and strength

  1087. to His

  1088. people.

  1089. through the

  1090. teaching of

  1091. the gospel,

  1092. we are

  1093. strengthened

  1094. and established

  1095. in this

  1096. faith.

  1097. Our

  1098. understanding

  1099. of the

  1100. person and

  1101. work of

  1102. Jesus grows,

  1103. deepens,

  1104. and expands,

  1105. and we are

  1106. built up

  1107. in Him

  1108. to become

  1109. more like

  1110. Him.

  1111. What will

  1112. keep you

  1113. steady?

  1114. What will

  1115. make you

  1116. steadfast?

  1117. Christ,

  1118. the way

  1119. of progress

  1120. in the

  1121. Christian

  1122. life,

  1123. is not

  1124. by leaving

  1125. or abandoning

  1126. the gospel

  1127. of Christ

  1128. or by

  1129. looking

  1130. somewhere

  1131. else or

  1132. to some

  1133. other

  1134. teachings.

  1135. It is

  1136. by more

  1137. firmly

  1138. rooting and

  1139. establishing

  1140. ourselves

  1141. in Jesus

  1142. Christ and

  1143. in His

  1144. gospel.

  1145. The life

  1146. of Jesus

  1147. in our

  1148. hearts,

  1149. the truth

  1150. of Jesus

  1151. in our

  1152. minds.

  1153. As we

  1154. were singing

  1155. this morning,

  1156. He is

  1157. our sure

  1158. and steady

  1159. anchor

  1160. in a

  1161. world of

  1162. unbelief

  1163. and lies.

  1164. So,

  1165. there is a

  1166. relentlessness

  1167. here about

  1168. Christian

  1169. growth,

  1170. and there is

  1171. a steadfastness

  1172. about Christian

  1173. growth,

  1174. and then

  1175. thirdly here,

  1176. there is a

  1177. thankfulness

  1178. about Christian

  1179. life and

  1180. growth,

  1181. abounding

  1182. in

  1183. thanksgiving

  1184. to Him.

  1185. The word

  1186. for abounding

  1187. here literally

  1188. means

  1189. overflowing.

  1190. Commentators

  1191. speculate that

  1192. this may have

  1193. been one of

  1194. the catchwords

  1195. used by the

  1196. false teachers

  1197. in Colossae.

  1198. And so,

  1199. Paul may be

  1200. repeating it

  1201. here to

  1202. underline his

  1203. point that the

  1204. authentic Christian

  1205. life flows

  1206. out of union

  1207. with Jesus

  1208. Christ,

  1209. and indeed

  1210. it overflows

  1211. with thanksgiving

  1212. to Him.

  1213. again,

  1214. if I can

  1215. quote a song

  1216. from my

  1217. childhood

  1218. Sunday school,

  1219. running over,

  1220. running over,

  1221. my cup's

  1222. full and

  1223. running over.

  1224. There are

  1225. actions,

  1226. but I'm not

  1227. going to do

  1228. them.

  1229. Since the

  1230. Lord saved

  1231. me,

  1232. I'm as

  1233. happy as

  1234. can be,

  1235. my cup's

  1236. full and

  1237. running over.

  1238. And that's

  1239. what Paul

  1240. is referring

  1241. to here.

  1242. Lives so

  1243. brimful of

  1244. thanksgiving to

  1245. God that they

  1246. are running

  1247. over.

  1248. And this

  1249. note of

  1250. thanksgiving is

  1251. a great feature

  1252. in so many

  1253. of Paul's

  1254. writings.

  1255. It tells the

  1256. Thessalonians,

  1257. 1 Thessalonians 5,

  1258. 18,

  1259. give thanks in

  1260. all circumstances.

  1261. In the very

  1262. next chapter,

  1263. chapter 3,

  1264. that we'll look

  1265. at next month,

  1266. verses 15 through

  1267. 17, this is what

  1268. he says.

  1269. Let the peace

  1270. of Christ rule

  1271. in your hearts,

  1272. to which indeed

  1273. you were called

  1274. on one body,

  1275. and be thankful.

  1276. Let the Word of

  1277. Christ dwell in

  1278. you richly,

  1279. teaching,

  1280. admonishing one

  1281. another in all

  1282. wisdom,

  1283. singing psalms,

  1284. hymns,

  1285. and spiritual songs

  1286. with thankfulness

  1287. in your hearts

  1288. to God.

  1289. And whatever you

  1290. do in word or

  1291. deed, do

  1292. everything in

  1293. the name of

  1294. the Lord Jesus,

  1295. giving thanks to

  1296. God the Father

  1297. through Him.

  1298. thankfulness is

  1299. a key ingredient

  1300. for Christian

  1301. growth.

  1302. An attitude of

  1303. gratitude is

  1304. vital.

  1305. So, as the

  1306. Lord's people,

  1307. we're not to be

  1308. consumed with

  1309. resentment and

  1310. bitterness.

  1311. We're not to be

  1312. known as

  1313. grumblers and

  1314. complainers.

  1315. We're not to be

  1316. a bunch of

  1317. moaning minis.

  1318. Our lives are to

  1319. be running over

  1320. with thankfulness.

  1321. Now, that's not

  1322. always easy or

  1323. natural for us to

  1324. do, is it?

  1325. And you may be

  1326. saying or you may

  1327. be thinking,

  1328. yeah, but how can

  1329. I be thankful

  1330. after what's

  1331. happened to me,

  1332. what's happened in

  1333. my life?

  1334. Friends, there are

  1335. always things we

  1336. can be thankful

  1337. for, always.

  1338. there's a story

  1339. in the book,

  1340. The Hiding

  1341. Place,

  1342. that says

  1343. Corrie

  1344. Ten Boom's

  1345. account of

  1346. her and her

  1347. sister Betsy.

  1348. And part of that

  1349. account is the

  1350. time they spent

  1351. in a concentration

  1352. camp in

  1353. Ravensbrook for

  1354. helping Jews

  1355. escape the

  1356. Nazis.

  1357. and they

  1358. were placed

  1359. in a cramped,

  1360. what you would

  1361. call flea-ridden

  1362. accommodation with

  1363. hundreds of other

  1364. women.

  1365. I could paraphrase

  1366. it, but I'll just

  1367. read the part of

  1368. the story.

  1369. Corrie started

  1370. up, striking

  1371. her head on the

  1372. cross slats

  1373. above.

  1374. Something had

  1375. bitten her leg.

  1376. Fleas, she

  1377. cried.

  1378. Betsy, the

  1379. place is

  1380. swarming with

  1381. them, descending

  1382. from the

  1383. platform,

  1384. edging down a

  1385. narrow aisle.

  1386. They made their

  1387. way to a patch

  1388. of light.

  1389. Hear another

  1390. one, Corrie

  1391. wailed.

  1392. Betsy, how can

  1393. we live in

  1394. such a place?

  1395. Show us, show

  1396. us how, Betsy

  1397. said matter-of-factly.

  1398. It took Corrie

  1399. for a moment to

  1400. realize that her

  1401. sister was

  1402. praying.

  1403. Corrie, Betsy

  1404. then exclaimed

  1405. excitedly, he's

  1406. given us the

  1407. answer.

  1408. Before we asked

  1409. as he always

  1410. does, in the

  1411. Bible this

  1412. morning, where

  1413. was it?

  1414. Read that part

  1415. again.

  1416. Corrie checked

  1417. to see that

  1418. there were no

  1419. guards nearby,

  1420. drew from a

  1421. pouch a small

  1422. Bible that

  1423. she'd managed to

  1424. smuggle into the

  1425. concentration camp.

  1426. It was in

  1427. 1 Thessalonians,

  1428. she said, finding

  1429. the passage in

  1430. the feeble

  1431. light.

  1432. Here it is.

  1433. Comfort the

  1434. frightened, help

  1435. the weak, be

  1436. patient with

  1437. everyone.

  1438. See that none

  1439. of you repays

  1440. evil for evil,

  1441. but always seek

  1442. to do good to

  1443. one another and

  1444. to all.

  1445. Rejoice

  1446. always, pray

  1447. constantly, give

  1448. thanks in all

  1449. circumstances for

  1450. this is the

  1451. will of God in

  1452. Christ Jesus.

  1453. That's it, Betsy

  1454. interrupted.

  1455. That's his

  1456. answer.

  1457. Give thanks in

  1458. all circumstances.

  1459. That's what we

  1460. can do.

  1461. We can start

  1462. right now to

  1463. thank God for

  1464. every single

  1465. thing about this

  1466. barracks.

  1467. Corrie stared

  1468. at her

  1469. incredulously.

  1470. Then around the

  1471. dark, foul-smelling

  1472. room, such as,

  1473. she inquired.

  1474. Such as being

  1475. assigned here

  1476. together.

  1477. Corrie bit her

  1478. lip.

  1479. Oh yes, Lord

  1480. Jesus, such as

  1481. what you're holding

  1482. in your hands.

  1483. Corrie looked

  1484. down at the

  1485. Bible.

  1486. Yes, thank you,

  1487. dear Lord, that

  1488. there was no

  1489. inspection when we

  1490. entered here.

  1491. Thank you for

  1492. all the women

  1493. here in this

  1494. room who will

  1495. come to meet

  1496. you and its

  1497. pages.

  1498. Yes, agreed

  1499. Betsy.

  1500. Thank you for

  1501. the crowding

  1502. here.

  1503. Since we're

  1504. packed so close,

  1505. many more will

  1506. hear.

  1507. She looked at

  1508. her sister

  1509. expectantly and

  1510. prodded.

  1511. Corrie,

  1512. all right,

  1513. thank you for

  1514. the jammed,

  1515. crammed,

  1516. stuffed,

  1517. packed,

  1518. suffocating

  1519. crowds.

  1520. Thank you,

  1521. Betsy continued

  1522. on, for the

  1523. fleas and

  1524. for, that was

  1525. too much for

  1526. Corrie.

  1527. She cut in

  1528. on her

  1529. sister.

  1530. Betsy,

  1531. there's no

  1532. way even

  1533. God can

  1534. make me

  1535. grateful for

  1536. a flea.

  1537. Give

  1538. thanks in

  1539. all circumstances,

  1540. Betsy

  1541. corrected.

  1542. Doesn't say

  1543. in pleasant

  1544. circumstances.

  1545. Fleas are

  1546. part of this

  1547. place where

  1548. God has put

  1549. us.

  1550. And so

  1551. they stood

  1552. between the

  1553. stacks of

  1554. bunks and

  1555. gave thanks

  1556. for fleas.

  1557. Though on

  1558. that occasion,

  1559. Corrie thought

  1560. Betsy was

  1561. surely wrong.

  1562. Weeks

  1563. passed and

  1564. Betsy told

  1565. Corrie,

  1566. you know,

  1567. we've never

  1568. understood why

  1569. we had so

  1570. much freedom

  1571. in the big

  1572. room for

  1573. Christian

  1574. ministry.

  1575. Well,

  1576. I find out.

  1577. This afternoon

  1578. there was

  1579. confusion in

  1580. my knitting

  1581. group about

  1582. sock sizes,

  1583. so we

  1584. asked the

  1585. supervisor to

  1586. come and

  1587. settle it,

  1588. but she

  1589. wouldn't.

  1590. She wouldn't

  1591. step through

  1592. the door,

  1593. and neither

  1594. would the

  1595. guards.

  1596. And do you

  1597. know why?

  1598. Betsy

  1599. could not

  1600. keep the

  1601. triumph from

  1602. her voice,

  1603. as she

  1604. exclaimed,

  1605. because of

  1606. the fleas.

  1607. That's what

  1608. she said.

  1609. That place

  1610. is crawling

  1611. with fleas.

  1612. Corrie's

  1613. mind raced

  1614. back to their

  1615. first hour in

  1616. the barracks.

  1617. She remembered

  1618. Betsy bowing

  1619. her head and

  1620. thanking God

  1621. for creatures

  1622. that Corrie

  1623. could see no

  1624. use for.

  1625. Isn't that an

  1626. astonishing

  1627. story?

  1628. Overflowing

  1629. with

  1630. thanksgiving.

  1631. They were in

  1632. a Nazi

  1633. concentration

  1634. camp.

  1635. You see,

  1636. thankfulness is

  1637. such a crucial

  1638. spiritual

  1639. discipline.

  1640. We need to

  1641. constantly be

  1642. reminding ourselves

  1643. of God's

  1644. goodness and

  1645. grace towards

  1646. us.

  1647. We need to

  1648. be feeding

  1649. our faith

  1650. with fresh

  1651. memories of

  1652. Christ's goodness

  1653. and mercy

  1654. towards us.

  1655. Because in a

  1656. way,

  1657. thankfulness is

  1658. what will keep

  1659. us tied to

  1660. Jesus Christ.

  1661. It's the

  1662. super glue

  1663. that sticks us

  1664. close to Him.

  1665. it's part of

  1666. the function

  1667. as we

  1668. celebrated this

  1669. morning,

  1670. the Lord's

  1671. Supper.

  1672. We remember

  1673. and celebrate

  1674. our Lord

  1675. Jesus Christ

  1676. and all that

  1677. He has done

  1678. for us,

  1679. especially in

  1680. His death

  1681. on the cross.

  1682. We fellowship

  1683. with Him

  1684. and with one

  1685. another in the

  1686. power of the

  1687. Spirit.

  1688. That's why in

  1689. some traditions

  1690. the Supper is

  1691. known as the

  1692. Eucharist.

  1693. The word

  1694. just means

  1695. thanksgiving.

  1696. It was

  1697. Shakespeare's

  1698. King Lear

  1699. who famously

  1700. declared how

  1701. sharper than

  1702. a serpent's

  1703. tooth it is

  1704. to have a

  1705. thankless

  1706. child.

  1707. And Corey

  1708. told a story

  1709. this morning

  1710. about a

  1711. thankless

  1712. son.

  1713. There's a

  1714. story from

  1715. long ago

  1716. on the

  1717. island of

  1718. Mauritius

  1719. of a mother

  1720. and a daughter

  1721. who were

  1722. slaves.

  1723. And the

  1724. mother saved

  1725. and worked

  1726. tirelessly

  1727. over the

  1728. years to

  1729. get enough

  1730. money to

  1731. buy their

  1732. freedom.

  1733. But she

  1734. could only

  1735. accumulate

  1736. enough funds

  1737. to obtain

  1738. freedom for

  1739. one.

  1740. She couldn't

  1741. do it for

  1742. herself.

  1743. She could

  1744. only purchase

  1745. her daughter's

  1746. freedom and

  1747. she did it

  1748. gladly and

  1749. willingly.

  1750. And then

  1751. sometime later

  1752. the women

  1753. had the

  1754. occasion to

  1755. enter a

  1756. room where

  1757. her daughter

  1758. was sitting.

  1759. And she

  1760. went across

  1761. and she sat

  1762. down beside

  1763. her.

  1764. And the

  1765. daughter became

  1766. furious and

  1767. angry.

  1768. She rebuked

  1769. her mother.

  1770. How dare you

  1771. sit in my

  1772. presence.

  1773. You're just a

  1774. slave.

  1775. I am a

  1776. free woman.

  1777. What appalling

  1778. ingratitude.

  1779. She'd forgotten

  1780. the price that

  1781. had been paid

  1782. and who had

  1783. paid it for

  1784. her.

  1785. Friends, we

  1786. dare not do

  1787. the same.

  1788. Don't be a

  1789. thankless child

  1790. of God.

  1791. Never forget

  1792. the price that

  1793. has been paid

  1794. for your

  1795. freedom or

  1796. the one who

  1797. paid it for

  1798. us.

  1799. We need to

  1800. ask God to

  1801. lead us ever

  1802. to Calvary and

  1803. to the cross.

  1804. because at

  1805. the end of

  1806. the day,

  1807. that will

  1808. keep us

  1809. drifting away

  1810. from Jesus

  1811. Christ.

  1812. It's looking

  1813. to the cross

  1814. of Christ

  1815. that helps

  1816. us to stay

  1817. and not

  1818. stray.

  1819. Jesus paid

  1820. it all.

  1821. All to

  1822. Him I

  1823. owe.

  1824. Sin had

  1825. left a

  1826. crimson stain.

  1827. He washed

  1828. it white

  1829. as snow.

  1830. I love

  1831. that answer

  1832. of the

  1833. evangelist

  1834. Gypsy

  1835. Smith at

  1836. the end

  1837. of his

  1838. life.

  1839. When he

  1840. was asked

  1841. the secret

  1842. of his

  1843. long and

  1844. fruitful

  1845. ministry,

  1846. he replied,

  1847. I never

  1848. lost the

  1849. wonder of

  1850. it all.

  1851. And what

  1852. is that

  1853. if it is

  1854. not

  1855. thankfulness?

  1856. We need

  1857. to stay,

  1858. not stray.

  1859. How do

  1860. we do it?

  1861. Relentlessness.

  1862. Keep pressing

  1863. on.

  1864. Be

  1865. relentless

  1866. in abiding

  1867. in Jesus.

  1868. Steadfastness.

  1869. Keep digging

  1870. down.

  1871. Be

  1872. steadfastly

  1873. anchoring

  1874. your faith

  1875. in Jesus

  1876. Christ.

  1877. Thankfulness.

  1878. Keep

  1879. looking

  1880. up.

  1881. Be

  1882. ever

  1883. thankful

  1884. for all

  1885. that Christ

  1886. has done

  1887. for you.

  1888. By God's

  1889. grace,

  1890. may these

  1891. three hallmarks

  1892. be evidenced

  1893. in our

  1894. Christian lives

  1895. and experience

  1896. that we

  1897. too

  1898. will be

  1899. a people

  1900. who will

  1901. stay

  1902. and not

  1903. stray.

  1904. Let's pray

  1905. together.

  1906. Amen.

  1907. God,

  1908. our Father,

  1909. we thank you

  1910. for all that you

  1911. have given

  1912. to us

  1913. in your

  1914. Son,

  1915. our Lord

  1916. Jesus Christ.

  1917. Christ,

  1918. we thank you

  1919. that in him

  1920. are all the

  1921. treasures

  1922. of wisdom

  1923. and knowledge.

  1924. Lord,

  1925. we pray that

  1926. by your

  1927. Holy Spirit

  1928. you would

  1929. help us

  1930. be

  1931. relentless

  1932. in our

  1933. Christian lives,

  1934. walking

  1935. with Jesus,

  1936. that you

  1937. would be,

  1938. help us

  1939. to be

  1940. steadfast

  1941. in the

  1942. faith,

  1943. and that

  1944. you would

  1945. help us

  1946. always

  1947. to be

  1948. thankful

  1949. for all

  1950. your

  1951. goodness

  1952. towards us,

  1953. that we

  1954. may grow,

  1955. that we

  1956. may mature,

  1957. and that we

  1958. may bear

  1959. fruit for

  1960. your glory.

  1961. We pray

  1962. this in

  1963. Jesus'

  1964. name.

  1965. Amen.
