  1. Today's uh message uh as we kick off

  2. this series I will yeah you is all about

  3. the topic the subject matter the theme

  4. of God's will this idea that there is a

  5. God who exists he is real and that he

  6. has a plan he has a purpose and that he

  7. has a will not just for the world

  8. generally speaking but also for our

  9. world and our lives personally and

  10. specifically speaking but I find it

  11. interesting how in our culture the

  12. culture of Ireland where you're born

  13. here or have come here uh Everyone can

  14. be Irish. It's a spirit. And in this

  15. culture of Ireland, it's like we love

  16. doing things or saying things or being

  17. oxymoronical like almost being being uh

  18. you know uh what's the word you know uh

  19. contradicting ourselves in how we speak.

  20. So for example, if you ask an Irish

  21. person when they went to an event and

  22. they didn't like or wasn't good, how did

  23. it go? They will say it was great. Yeah.

  24. Translation, it was crap. It wasn't

  25. good. Um, you think about, for example,

  26. an event, you're doing a birthday party,

  27. a wedding. The French gave us the RSVP,

  28. right? Which is like respond play,

  29. respond please. And when you get an RCP

  30. invitation, there's two options. Can you

  31. make it to my birth anniversary event?

  32. Yes

  33. or no? But the Irish come along and say,

  34. well, actually, we're going to invent a

  35. third category. Maybe. Maybe I'll go. In

  36. fact, all over Ireland right now in all

  37. different kinds of WhatsApp chats,

  38. there's all sorts of polls and RV RSPs

  39. and there's yes, no, and then there's

  40. maybe because we don't like to commit to

  41. things unless we unless we're absolutely

  42. sure we want to go. And sometimes what

  43. happens is you say to Irish person, hey,

  44. will you come along? Will you go to that

  45. thing? Will you? And they say, maybe

  46. yeah, which means what? I'm not going.

  47. Maybe. Yeah, more than likely not. And

  48. of course, there's the classic, I will.

  49. Will you bring out the rubbish? Will you

  50. do your homework? Will you go to bed

  51. early? Will you be there on time? Will

  52. you? I will. Yeah. Translation, "No, I

  53. won't." And of course, where I'm from in

  54. car, we used to say, "I will I will I

  55. Peter say, "Hey, will you do your mat

  56. tonight?" I will I will you pick a bed?

  57. I will I will you in town will I?

  58. Meaning, no, I won't. And the reason for

  59. this is actually because I did some

  60. research this week is because in the

  61. Irish language there's no definitive way

  62. to say yes or no. Uh usually Irish

  63. language takes the verb of the of the

  64. question and expresses a negative or

  65. positive onto that. So we kind of

  66. translate that into English by doing

  67. almost like a double negative. I will.

  68. Yeah. Meaning no I won't. Now this is

  69. funny as a cultural observation but it

  70. gets quite serious when it comes to our

  71. relationship with God. Because when it

  72. comes to a relationship with God, there

  73. is this idea that I have my will, my

  74. way, my plans, what I want, and they

  75. live in contention or oppose to what

  76. God's will is, what God's wants are,

  77. what God's plan is for life. And if

  78. you're not a Jesus follower and you're

  79. new, you're very welcome. Today is an

  80. opportunity for you to sneak peek into

  81. what are these Jesus followers supposed

  82. to do in relation to what God's will is.

  83. And if you are a Jesus follower, I want

  84. to hopefully clarify today and help you

  85. in this series to see that God's will

  86. when you understand it is actually not

  87. just God's arbitrary random separate to

  88. your plans will. But actually it is the

  89. best way to live your life. Now behind

  90. this is is a battle of wants. What I

  91. want versus what he wills. And part of

  92. the uh tensions we uh incorrectly assume

  93. that what he wills is not what I want.

  94. But if you stop for a second and think

  95. of this, imagine if you're not Jesus

  96. follower, if you are, think of this.

  97. God, the supreme being of the universe,

  98. created you on purpose and for a

  99. purpose. And he put into you value

  100. systems, destiny. He put into you this

  101. idea of the the desires. They aren't

  102. self these desires aren't the the

  103. superficial selfish ones or the deep

  104. ones. Well, who is best positioned as

  105. your creator to deliver on the very

  106. things that are deep in your soul? The

  107. answer he is. Sometimes what we really

  108. really want is actually what he really

  109. really wills. Because our heavenly

  110. father is exactly that. He is a good

  111. father. He is a kind father. He is a

  112. generous father. He hasn't come to spoil

  113. our fun. He hasn't just randomly take

  114. out his anger and vengeance on us

  115. because he himself is a ball of rage.

  116. You know, he is a he is a trustworthy

  117. father and he has put in us things that

  118. we don't understand yet in terms of

  119. desires. But actually, as we journey

  120. with him, we realize the true

  121. fulfillment of everything I want is to

  122. be found in my own ability to

  123. manufacture my destiny. but to walk with

  124. him as he wills it. God isn't seeking

  125. anything from us, but he wants the best

  126. for us. And if there are seasons or

  127. times where there's boundary lines or

  128. there's best practice or wisdom that

  129. says, "Hey, that probably isn't wise or

  130. good. You shouldn't go that way." They

  131. think it's not because God's reign our

  132. parade. It's because he wants the best

  133. for us. Now what happens is especially

  134. with those of us who are Jesus followers

  135. is when it comes to trying to figure out

  136. what's God's will for my life should I

  137. go to this college that university

  138. [snorts] for many of our leave students

  139. like what which what should I put top of

  140. the CEO uh form should I go out with

  141. this guy or that guy should I commit

  142. should I get married should I move

  143. should I stay should I go should I go up

  144. should I go down should I get in the

  145. property market out of property market

  146. should advance my business business be

  147. conser like we have all these questions

  148. and the challenge is sometimes we tend

  149. to overspiritualize

  150. what God is actually thinking for us. We

  151. kind of think it's this weird, you know,

  152. random uh voodoo dudoo kind of thing

  153. where some going to intuit it God's

  154. will. We to have smoke and mirrors and

  155. all these things and we we we simply

  156. over complicate how simple God's will

  157. is. The other thing we can do is we can

  158. overanalyze it. We just like, oh my

  159. gosh, is it this? Is it that? What if

  160. that? If I this if God's will is a real

  161. thing and I miss it, does that mean my

  162. whole life is over? And so we trap

  163. ourselves like decision paradas thinking

  164. my gosh how am I supposed to know? But

  165. the one thing we all do for sure is we

  166. also tend to us underestimate

  167. how good God is, God's plans, God's

  168. will, God's promises, and God's

  169. faithfulness for our lives. So for the

  170. next few weeks, what we're going to do

  171. is we're going to unpack this idea of

  172. how do we uh not fall into this trap,

  173. but this earn or simply put understand

  174. how do I understand what God's will is

  175. for my life. And again today in part

  176. one, I want to lay a foundation. I want

  177. to put in some pillars. I I want I want

  178. to put something in a base in today that

  179. we can build from for the next couple

  180. weeks to give the understanding of what

  181. God's will is. But ultimately speaking,

  182. we're talking about my life. What is

  183. God's specific personal will for us? So

  184. today we'll keep the foundation. Next

  185. week we'll get into detail what that

  186. looks like. Now when it comes to God's

  187. will, one of the reasons why God's will

  188. can be confusing why it can seem

  189. overwhelming is because by nature the

  190. fact that he is God meaning he is

  191. outside time. He is not limited by our

  192. mortality. He's not limited by gravity.

  193. He's not limited by our economy. He's

  194. not stuck in the limitations that we all

  195. share. Therefore, as that is his person,

  196. what he wills is equally complex. For

  197. example, there are actually four aspects

  198. to the will of God. We tend to ask the

  199. question in one aspect. The fourth ones

  200. I come to the end, but actually there's

  201. four aspects to God's will there. Number

  202. one, God's reigning will. Now, if you

  203. look at uh books, you read, you know,

  204. study theologians say, scholars, they

  205. talk about this. This reigning will re

  206. refers to God's supremacy. that if God

  207. is real, if there truly is a supreme

  208. being who's in control of all things,

  209. then his will, what he wants, he gets

  210. because he is reigning. We can't stop

  211. ultimately what God's plan and purpose

  212. is for the world. But number two,

  213. there's also God's revealed will. That

  214. is the part of his will that he makes

  215. known to us. The primary way we know it

  216. is through his word. He instructs, he

  217. guides, he tells here's the best way to

  218. live in the world I created based on my

  219. reigning will. Then number three, to

  220. make things even more confusing, there

  221. is God's permissive will, which means

  222. God also allows things for a momentary

  223. period of time to happen outside what he

  224. wants is best. And number four, the

  225. question we're all interested in, but

  226. what's God's personal will for me in our

  227. list? And to answer that, what's God's

  228. personal will? We got to have at least

  229. have a basic understanding of what one,

  230. two, and three are. So here's number

  231. one, God's reigning will. Scholars often

  232. rec call this or term it God's sovereign

  233. will because he is God because he's

  234. ultimate because he is supreme. He is

  235. the sovereign. God does not have an

  236. opinion on how things should go. God

  237. does not change his mind. God is not

  238. moody. God doesn't say ask me on

  239. Thursday and then I'll decide. God does

  240. not wait to see what the weather is like

  241. before he commits. He has a plan that is

  242. an action that is outside time for

  243. everything inside time. Well, he created

  244. the cosmos and the planets and people

  245. and land and seas and mountains and all

  246. the things. Everything was created

  247. according to his plan. And he tells us

  248. in his word in Isaiah 46:10,

    Isaiah 46:10

  249. everything I plan will come to pass.

  250. Everything I plan will come to pass.

  251. intention is as is captured in Proverbs

    Proverbs 19:21

  252. 19:21 when it comes to us. We also have

  253. plans. But the difference is everything

  254. God plans comes to pass but not

  255. everything we plan comes to pass. It

  256. says many are the plans in a man's heart

  257. but it is the Lord's purpose that

  258. prevails. We all have aims, goals,

  259. desires. We have things that are

  260. important to us. We're trying to achieve

  261. certain things personally or in sport or

  262. on our career or financially or security

  263. or relationally. We have many plans.

  264. They come and they go. Some work, some

  265. don't. But ult at the end of day, when

  266. all of time has stood the test of time,

  267. it will be ultimately the plan of God

  268. that prevails. It is unstoppable.

  269. It is unavoidable.

  270. And it is inevitable. We can choose to

  271. live our life in ignorance of God's

  272. sovereign will. We can choose to live

  273. our lives in rebellion to God's

  274. sovereign will. We can choose to, you

  275. know, uh pretend like there isn't this

  276. this reality happening. That's okay. We

  277. have that choice. But our lack of

  278. belief, our disinterest, our rejection,

  279. our rebellion, our not wanting does not

  280. take away the fact at the end of the

  281. day, God's plan is this. Every knee will

  282. bow and every tongue will confess that

  283. Jesus Christ is a son of God and savior

  284. of the world. That will happen cuz that

  285. is God's plan. That we may always

  286. understand it. We may not like it. We

  287. may not accept it. But he's daddy and

  288. daddy calls the shots. That is his

  289. sovereign plan. Now the second kind of

  290. aspect of God's will is God's revealed

  291. will.

  292. God's revealed will is often called by

  293. scholars his moral will. And his moral

  294. will is revealed to us in his word. This

  295. is his best practice for how we do this

  296. thing called life. And upon first

  297. reading, sometimes we fall into the trap

  298. of thinking, my gosh, all God wants to

  299. do is steal all the fun and make us all

  300. boring religious types. But actually

  301. when you act actually deep you know dive

  302. into the truth of God's God God's word

  303. and how it applies to us. What God's

  304. word is saying is that we ultimately

  305. every single person are called to be

  306. like his son his son Jesus. Well who is

  307. Jesus? Well Jesus is kind and he's

  308. compassionate and he's generous and he's

  309. merciful and he's gracious and he's

  310. patient and he could had self-control.

  311. He was sacrificial. He loved other

  312. people. He was incredible. I think that

  313. we think even without thinking we think

  314. that every person in the world would

  315. make the better world if we were all

  316. more like Jesus. If all of our spouses,

  317. our kids, our employers, our employees,

  318. our government officials, if everyone in

  319. the world was a little bit more like

  320. Jesus, perhaps the world would be a

  321. better place. That's what it means. We

  322. talk about God's moral will revealed in

  323. his word. God's moral will is uh in

  324. essence very clear. There's no

  325. ambiguity. When you read the word, you

  326. see it. It is very consistent. It

  327. doesn't change Old Testament to new this

  328. or that author's verices. And number

  329. three, it is unchanging. Which means

  330. what God's moral will tells may suit our

  331. particular prevailing cultural moment.

  332. It may be acceptable. It may even be

  333. popular. But a lot of times God's clear

  334. and consistent and unchanging revealed

  335. will for us is usually countercultural.

  336. Usually requires us as Christ followers

  337. to be uncompromising in our commitment

  338. to him at the expense of our own

  339. ridicule of people laughing at us and

  340. thinking we're crazy. We don't get a

  341. vote. We don't get an ask. It is his

  342. revealed moral will for mankind. Now,

  343. what is what is a what how can I

  344. summarize that with a scripture? Well,

  345. in 1 Thessalonians chapter 4 and:e3, the

    1 Thessalonians 4 chapter mention

  346. Apostle Paul said this, and we just sang

  347. about it. God's will for you is to be

  348. holy.

  349. Holy. And you go, really, Jamie? Holy? I

  350. I don't think I'm the holy type. Well,

  351. neither am I. The part part of the

  352. reason part of the problem we we push

  353. back is because we actually have a

  354. misconceived idea of what holy means.

  355. The word holy in the Greek language with

  356. which the apostle Paul wrote this letter

  357. is the word hagios. Hagios. And it means

  358. set apart. Set apart. For example, how

  359. many of you when you go to your fast

  360. food restaurant of choice, whether it be

  361. Burger King, KFC, or McDonald's, you get

  362. your tray of food. How many of you now

  363. even realizing this have a way a

  364. methodology for how you consume all that

  365. good stuff that is pretty predictable?

  366. By that I mean this let me do let's

  367. let's do a little a survey. How many of

  368. you if you're in McDonald's or place

  369. with a burger you eat your burger before

  370. your fries? Hands up. Burger before your

  371. fries. These crazy people there only a

  372. few of them here. Thank God. How many of

  373. you eat your burger and your fries at

  374. the same time? All South Americans

  375. going, "Yep, of course." Pretty cool.

  376. Yeah. You think, "Oh, we're so unique."

  377. Not really. Uh, how many of you eat your

  378. fries and then your burger? These are

  379. God's people right here. These are the

  380. chosen ones.

  381. Well, in case you can't tell, I'm in the

  382. latter group. I have a very kind of

  383. systematic way of consuming my

  384. McDonald's. So, usually goes like this.

  385. I order a quarter pounder meal because a

  386. quarter pounder is the best thing since

  387. sliced bread. It has sliced bread in it.

  388. It's even better. Uh, then I have my

  389. large fries. And because, you know, we

  390. want to enjoy and savor the moment and

  391. it isn't very filling, we might go for

  392. some onion rings or some, you know, a

  393. cheese bites. Me, I love chicken

  394. nuggets, McDonald's chicken nuggets. And

  395. I also get like a mayonnaise dip and a

  396. curry dip. And I dip nuggets in both.

  397. Don't judge it until you've tried it.

  398. It's very liberating. And how I eat is

  399. I'll eat my fries first, nuggets second,

  400. and and before I even start eating, I

  401. have I open the sauces, pour out the

  402. fries, p the nuggets, bit of salt, no

  403. ketchup for me. I take the burger and I

  404. set it apart. It comes off the tray

  405. somewhere safe. Not too far. It's

  406. unsafe. Safe enough that if you want to

  407. get it, you got to come to me to get it.

  408. But it isn't going to be in the way of

  409. what I'm doing because it is the point.

  410. It is everything in the fries and

  411. nuggets is preparation

  412. for what's about to happen next. It is

  413. the cherry on the cake. I love once

  414. everybody's gone, they going, "Oh, my

  415. food's gone. Oh, wait. I have a burger.

  416. I'm just enjoying that burger. It is to

  417. me a holy thing." Thinking that's crazy.

  418. You can't make a quarter pounder holy by

  419. Yes, I can. That's what the word means.

  420. Set apart. When scripture teaches about

  421. God is holy, it means he is set apart.

  422. Set apart meaning he is different than

  423. us. Set apart meaning he is worthy of

  424. our devotion. Set apart meaning we

  425. should be dedicated to him. All set

  426. apart means is that we as his when he

  427. created the world, the mountains, the

  428. oceans, the valleys, he set us apart for

  429. a specific purpose. And when we become

  430. his followers, by definition, by

  431. becoming his followers, living

  432. counterculturally, we're no longer on

  433. the tray. We're in the world of the

  434. world, we are different. We are devoted.

  435. And again, devoted can get a bad rap

  436. because devoted sounds so old school and

  437. so, you know, uh, religious, but

  438. actually, let's be honest, we want more

  439. devoted people in the world. We want as

  440. employers devoted employees who love

  441. their job, who work hard, who are

  442. honest, and on time, right? employers.

  443. We want as employees employers who are

  444. equally to vote, making sure that we get

  445. what we deserve in terms of our pay on

  446. time, right? Especially when it's

  447. overtime.

  448. But more importantly, in the context,

  449. for example, of marriage, you don't

  450. understand the value of devotion until

  451. it's not there anymore. If you've been

  452. through betrayal and heartbreak or

  453. walked through with someone you know and

  454. love, you see firsthand just how

  455. devastating it is when a person makes a

  456. commitment like marriage and promises to

  457. be devoted but falls short of the

  458. devotion. It is devastating. But when

  459. people despite all the failures and

  460. flaws we have as human beings over time

  461. remain devoid for the long hall. It's

  462. incredible to see the kind of family and

  463. legacy and future that is built not just

  464. for them but for their kids and

  465. grandkids when they're devote. God wants

  466. us as his people. If you're a Christ

  467. fathers I'm talking to you right now.

  468. God wants us because we're different

  469. because we're called of him to be

  470. devoted and to live out lives of

  471. dedication that he comes first. It won't

  472. always be easy

  473. to live wholeheartedly for Jesus in this

  474. world. But what I can say with certainty

  475. is it will always be worth it. It's not

  476. easy to live out and live according to

  477. God's revealed will in this world right

  478. now. It won't be easy. But let me tell

  479. you this. As you trust him and live

  480. wholeheartedly for him, what you will

  481. see with time is it is always worth it.

  482. So God's reigning will, God's reveal.

  483. Number three, God's permissive will.

  484. Here's one the here's here's where it

  485. kind of gets interesting. Here's where

  486. we get pushed back in tension and

  487. sometimes confusion. Cuz God has this

  488. reigning will that just exists and we're

  489. not always aware of. We don't understand

  490. how it fully works, but it is. We have

  491. God's revealed will which we see in his

  492. word. But there's also this idea that

  493. inside God's reigning and revealed will

  494. is space. Because God isn't a

  495. controlling God. He isn't a manipulative

  496. God. He gives us freedom to make

  497. choices. This is so important because

  498. when we see people who are supposed to

  499. res represent God, but they are trying

  500. to control you, control your life,

  501. control your behavior, control your

  502. choices, if God is not controlling, then

  503. those people do not represent God. Next

  504. slide, please.

  505. You with me? If God is not controlling,

  506. then people who pretend to represent

  507. God, when they try to control you,

  508. they're not representing God because God

  509. [clears throat] doesn't control you.

  510. God's will will prevail at the end of

  511. the day. And God has shown us through

  512. his through his word the best way to

  513. live our lives. But God does not

  514. manipulate, coercse, or control us into

  515. living our lives his way. He gives us

  516. the freedom of choice. But here's the

  517. problem. With every choice, there are

  518. consequences.

  519. And with the choices given to mankind,

  520. we must accept the consequences.

  521. Sometimes people say, "Pastor Amy, if

  522. God is real and if God is good and if

  523. God is loving, then why is it that so

  524. many people right now are starving

  525. across the world?"

  526. Now, I'll say, "Well, it isn't because

  527. God isn't good. God is good." They go,

  528. "How do you mean?" Well, God gave us an

  529. earth that creates enough food for

  530. everybody in it.

  531. The problem is people in their free will

  532. have made choices that hurt other

  533. people. Meaning some parts of the world

  534. have so much food that they don't just

  535. eat what they need. They throw away the

  536. excess. And again, our country is sadly

  537. one of those. I'm the kind of person

  538. where I didn't grow up with very much.

  539. So in my house when it comes dinner

  540. time, I can't stand people throwing out

  541. food. Any with me? It just it just I oh

  542. my soul. So, like last night we're out

  543. having dinner and we're after eating and

  544. one of the kids didn't finish their

  545. their their curry and rice. There's a

  546. few spoons left. I was like, "You better

  547. finish that curry and rice." Like, "It

  548. needs to get in your belly right now.

  549. This is We're not leaving this place.

  550. That's in you. It's leaving in you." You

  551. know what I'm saying? It's not leaving.

  552. We're not leaving here. And of course,

  553. Lord's like, "Yo, don't he fine? He's

  554. going to explode and get belly aches."

  555. I'm like, "He can get a belly ache, but

  556. that food is going in his belly." Why?

  557. Cuz I come from a household where there

  558. wasn't always food on the table. So, I

  559. have this weird PTSD thing where like I

  560. I can't throw food out. It's like sinful

  561. to me. It's like wrong. And how crazy is

  562. it in our world as as difficult as

  563. things may be for our lives that we

  564. still live in Ireland in a country of

  565. excess when right now people starving?

  566. There's enough food for everybody in the

  567. world two times over. Oh, what about,

  568. you know, resources or education

  569. opportunities or all these things? When

  570. you pull the thread on the consequences

  571. of pain in this world, it isn't God's

  572. fault is that men and women have made

  573. choices that hurt other men and women.

  574. If the world was more like Jesus, there

  575. would be kindness. There'd be

  576. generosity. There'd be no debt. There'd

  577. be grace and service. But because we

  578. want to live our lives anti-Jesus, the

  579. consequence is we live in a world that

  580. looks nothing like Jesus. Now, you may

  581. say, "Well, still that seems like, you

  582. know, too simple." Like, if God were go

  583. if God were real, God would intervene.

  584. Hang on a second. What do you want? Do

  585. you want a God who controls you or not?

  586. Do you want a God who's so involved in

  587. the world, dictating your choices, your

  588. plans, your future, controlling you that

  589. his will prevails all the time? Or do

  590. you want to live in a world where you

  591. actually have free will and choice? But

  592. I think the problem is you don't like

  593. the consequences of your choice. So you

  594. want God to give you freedom in your

  595. choices, but you want daddy to come and

  596. clean up the mess when the consequences

  597. arrive. Which do you want? A God is in

  598. control all the time, our God that gives

  599. us free will. The truth is God gives us

  600. free will.

  601. And yet, even though we're free to

  602. choose and we can choose the right

  603. thing, the wrong thing, a good thing, a

  604. bad thing, the wise thing, the unwise

  605. thing, when we choose the wrong, the

  606. bad, the wise, God is so gracious, so

  607. kind. He doesn't just leave us in our

  608. mess. He comes to our rescue. The

  609. Apostle Paul in 1 Corinthians 10:23, he

    1 Corinthians 10:23

  610. says this to the church. He says, well,

  611. they were said to him, you say, I am

  612. allowed to do anything. It's true. You

  613. can do whatever you want. It's a free

  614. country. You can do whatever you want.

  615. Just because everything is permissible,

  616. the Apostle Paul says not everything is

  617. beneficial.

  618. Just because you can doesn't mean you

  619. should. Let me give you an example of

  620. this. I love the full Irish breakfast.

  621. It's brum on full Irish breakfast.

  622. Seriously, it is. Come on. It's worthy.

  623. It's worthy of a bullet. We don't have a

  624. lot going for us in Ireland, but man,

  625. the full Irish breakfast is worthy of

  626. international respect. And and don't

  627. talk about this English breakfast

  628. nonsense, okay? Don't even go there.

  629. It's a full It's not full. It's a full

  630. Irish. They took everything from us.

  631. They're not taking our breakfast as

  632. well. It's our breakfast, right? I love

  633. it. I love I love the black pudding.

  634. Black pudding is like a heavenly reward

  635. for all the rain we get. Like, oh, the

  636. poor Irish. Let's give them black

  637. pudding. Thank you, Jesus, [laughter]

  638. for I just love a full Irish breakfast.

  639. I love a full Irish breakfast so much

  640. that I know places where you can get one

  641. after breakfast hours.

  642. Last night at 6:00 in the evening, I had

  643. a full Irish breakfast. Didn't make it

  644. myself. I bought it in a restaurant. I

  645. won't tell you where. Those in the inner

  646. circle know

  647. I love I appreciate just it's good for

  648. my soul. like nothing beats on a cold

  649. dark rain a full Irish breakfast and a

  650. cup of tea. It's just honestly however

  651. even though I love a full Irish

  652. breakfast and I appreciate and I can eat

  653. if I wanted to a full Irish breakfast

  654. every meal I have every day for the rest

  655. of my life. I can do that. That's my

  656. choice. God's not going to control me.

  657. Jamie, you shouldn't eat the breakfast.

  658. But the consequence is if I eat a full

  659. Irish breakfast every meal for the rest

  660. of my life, the rest part won't be very

  661. long, will it?

  662. I'm bringing that timeline way forward.

  663. Is that God's will? What is that? Well,

  664. let me ask a question. Is a full Irish

  665. breakfast good? If you're vegan,

  666. vegetarian, you're gonna say, "No,

  667. forgive us. Please forgive us." But if

  668. you're not, yes, it's good. It's good

  669. for us to enjoy the things of this

  670. world. But when does a good thing become

  671. bad? I'll tell you when when when it

  672. controls us more than we're controlling

  673. it. When I can say, do I want yes or no?

  674. Should I have yes or no? I'm in control.

  675. But when I can't help myself, when it

  676. becomes an addict, I have to have it.

  677. That's where a good thing becomes a bad

  678. thing. It begins to control us.

  679. Eventually what's given as a blessing

  680. becomes a subject matter of abuse and

  681. hurts us and those that we love. And on

  682. again that this is obviously just a

  683. funny story but but seriously speaking

  684. when it comes to our life our choices,

  685. relationship choices, addiction choices,

  686. career choices, uh vengeance choices,

  687. the things we choose to keep secret.

  688. Those things can be far more serious

  689. than whether I should have a full Irish

  690. breakfast three days in a row.

  691. >> Yeah,

  692. >> that's the challenge. The challenge is

  693. God has given us freedom to choose. But

  694. which choice can consequence? Here's the

  695. good news. The good news is that God our

  696. father in Christ Jesus can redeem all

  697. the pain, all the brokenness, and all

  698. the fallout from our poor choices. In

  699. fact, he promises us that we come to him

  700. like last week. Come to me all of you

  701. who are weary and hated evident and I

  702. will give you rest. The call, the

  703. invitation of the good is the gospel is

  704. that even though we're broken, even

  705. though we've made, and even though we're

  706. living in the consequence, the fallout

  707. of some pretty stupid decisions, even

  708. those God can redeem. There's God's

  709. reigning will. There's God's revealed

  710. will, God's permissive, and lastly, the

  711. one we want to get to, God's personal

  712. will. And we talk about God's personal

  713. will, we mean it's personal. God's will

  714. for you. And if you're not a Christ

  715. follower, Jesus follower, someone has

  716. faith, let me encourage you. God

  717. believes in you even if you don't

  718. believe in him. And he does have a

  719. purpose for your life. In fact, we as a

  720. church are are just so passionate about

  721. helping people find and live out their

  722. purpose that we've built the whole thing

  723. around that idea. One of my favorite

  724. scriptures is found in Ephesians chapter

    Ephesians 2 chapter mention

  725. 2 and verse 10. The apostle Paul the

  726. author again writing to a church like

  727. ours in a city called Ephesus which

  728. exists in modern day Turkey. He says in

  729. verse 10 for we are God's handiwork.

  730. That word handiwork in Greek is the word

  731. poua where we had the English word poem

  732. which simply means masterpiece.

  733. Like when God was busy creating the

  734. valleys, the mountains, the seas, the

  735. stars, the plants, all the complexity of

  736. creation, the very pinnacle of

  737. everything he made, at the very top of

  738. all his creation, I visualize it as

  739. almost like your photograph. There's a

  740. photograph of you, his kid. He loves

  741. you. And we as humanity are the are the

  742. the kind of uh the masterpiece of his

  743. creation. But we weren't just created to

  744. sit on a shelf and look good. There's a

  745. purpose created in Christ is to do good

  746. works for God prepared the vance for us

  747. to do. We call this in our church your

  748. extraordinary purpose that we are

  749. ordinary ordinary broken people trying

  750. to figure this thing out and at the same

  751. time ordinary people in an ordinary

  752. world God has an extraordinary purpose

  753. for our lives. There's a reason for our

  754. being here. The problem is how do we

  755. find it? I love this scripture in the

  756. book of Psalms verse 38 verse 32 forgive

  757. me in verse 8 where it says this

  758. [snorts]

  759. it [clears throat] says I will instruct

  760. you and teach you in the way you should

  761. go. I will counsel you with my loving

  762. eye on you. What God is saying to us is

  763. essence when it comes to his will is

  764. that he's not going to leave us alone to

  765. fumble through life and try to figure

  766. this thing out by ourselves. No, he

  767. promised that if our heart is open to

  768. him, if we do come to him, he says, "My

  769. yoke is easy. My burden, I will teach

  770. you. I will show you. I will counsel

  771. you. And all the while, I will keep my

  772. loving eye on you." Understand God's

  773. eyes towards you are not vengeful. God's

  774. eyes towards you, not disgust. God's

  775. eyes towards you, not ones of rejection

  776. and hatred. God loves you, and his

  777. loving eye is on you. And like any

  778. parent father in the world, I if if

  779. you're willing to trust, he wants to

  780. lead. He wants to show. He wants to

  781. guide us into our extraordinary purpose.

  782. Now, over the next three weeks, that's

  783. we're going to unpack in great detail.

  784. What does it look like for us to live

  785. out God's personal will for my life? In

  786. other words, how do I understand what

  787. God's will for my life is? Well, very

  788. simple. Don't overspiritualize.

  789. Don't overanalyze

  790. and simply don't underestimate the

  791. goodness of God. When you want when you

  792. don't understand God's hand, trust God's

  793. heart. He's a good father. So how we do

  794. it? Well, in essence, when it comes to

  795. God's reigning will, the pervasive will

  796. of God is going to happen regardless. We

  797. get to trust God's reigning will that he

  798. is God. He is in control. He is supreme.

  799. When it comes to what God's revealed to

  800. us in his word, we got to choose to obey

  801. what God has revealed his word, knowing

  802. that what he has called us to do and be

  803. is good for us and good for the world.

  804. When it comes to asking questions like

  805. why do bad things happen to good people

  806. and why are there consequences? We have

  807. to accept that God's permissive will

  808. makes room for people to make choices.

  809. And people's choices don't just affect

  810. them. They affect the world around them.

  811. And if that person is a president or a

  812. leader of a country, it can affect the

  813. whole world because we have free will.

  814. And lastly, as we set the series, when

  815. it comes to God's personal will, let's

  816. make a decision to walk out and walk in

  817. God's personal will for our lives. As I

  818. close, let me finish this because I

  819. understand that we live in a day and age

  820. in Ireland where there's so much

  821. complexity and so much uncertainty. And

  822. a lot of people, a lot of us, including

  823. myself, all of us, all occasions, we're

  824. living under this weight, this weight of

  825. anxiety like what should I do? Should go

  826. up, down, left, right? You know, should

  827. I buy, not buy? Should I save? Should I

  828. spend? Should I invest? Should I hold on

  829. to? Like there's just so much and and so

  830. many people are living under the burden,

  831. the pressure of that anxiety, of that

  832. uncertainty. And when it comes to God's

  833. will, you think, "Oh my gosh, here's one

  834. more thing that I could screw up and

  835. ruin my whole life." I want you to know

  836. that God's will for life isn't a burden

  837. you carry. Jesus promised us that he is

  838. the one carrying the weight, the burden

  839. of this, but we are invited into

  840. obedience to him and to walk with him

  841. through this life. It's a bit like

  842. traveling with a GPS. Now, I'm old

  843. enough to remember what life was like

  844. without a GPS. Anyone with me? I

  845. remember when Next slide, please. I

  846. remember when uh back in the day when

  847. you were going somewhere, you had in the

  848. glove box multiple maps. There was the

  849. all Ireland map, there was the east of

  850. Ireland map, there was the Dublin city

  851. map which was the hardest to read.

  852. There's all these and usually what

  853. happened is if you had both parents, one

  854. person's map reading and the other

  855. person's driving. And usually, just to

  856. make life even funnier, the person doing

  857. the driving was better the map reading

  858. and the person that the map read is

  859. better than the driving. Don't ask me

  860. why that is. That's just a thing for a

  861. reason. I don't know. It's like a

  862. phenomena. Okay. Uh, and then of course

  863. the internet came along and I can

  864. remember the first time I ever drove to

  865. Naven County Me. I was trying to figure

  866. out how do I get there? There was no M9.

  867. There was no M3. And I remember having

  868. to go on to Google and type in where I

  869. want to go. And Google printed for me on

  870. three pages step by step. That's how you

  871. navigate. You go to junction XY Z turn

  872. left drive for 20 km turn. That's how I

  873. first nav. And of course satnavs came

  874. out which were very funny because it

  875. never worked. The amount of cars that

  876. drove off cliffs into the lakes was

  877. hilarious. And eventually we get to

  878. where we are now where your phone has

  879. don't take for granted everybody. Your

  880. phone is GPS. Okay,

  881. but a GPS is a good analogy for this.

  882. Why? Because what happened? You you

  883. punch in I want to go to X place and it

  884. says, you know, there's the route. You

  885. press go and you're driving along and

  886. all of a sudden you get distracted.

  887. You get bullied out of your lane. You

  888. miss a sign. Whatever. You take a wrong

  889. turn. What happens when you're driving

  890. along and you take a wrong turn? Does

  891. your GPS say something like, "You are an

  892. idiot. You are the worst driver I've

  893. ever worked with since my creation. You

  894. are such a disgrace. You should pull the

  895. car, give up your keys, and take public

  896. transport for the rest of your life."

  897. [laughter]

  898. Now, the GPS doesn't understand what

  899. we're thinking about ourselves in our

  900. insecure moments.

  901. Does GPS say you're so bad at this, I'm

  902. switching off now and go blank? No. What

  903. does it do? It says you've obviously

  904. chosen a different path than what was

  905. best recommended.

  906. Not not not the the consequence isn't

  907. now you're cut off or by your over to

  908. you. You don't want my help. Okay, I

  909. won't help you. Now GPS isn't going to

  910. have a bad ad to us. It just simply says

  911. recalculating.

  912. is going to find out based on where you

  913. are from the consequence of your choice

  914. how best to get back on track. Now, you

  915. may need to drive down some country

  916. roads. Yeah, it's worth celebrating God.

  917. Yeah. [applause]

  918. You may be met with a couple of cows on

  919. the way. You may have to deal with the

  920. consequences momentarily of your but

  921. ultimately there is hope that you can

  922. get back on track. That is who the Holy

  923. Spirit is.

  924. >> God does not leave us lost down some

  925. side roads saying, "Well, you chose it.

  926. you deal with it when you reverse all

  927. the way back and you'll find where you

  928. left me. God never leaves leaves us.

  929. >> As soon as you return your heart to me,

  930. I will guide you out of this mess and

  931. back. So, what I'm saying is don't feel

  932. overwhelmed

  933. by the will of God. It isn't an

  934. overwhelming thing. Why? Because you

  935. don't carry it. He does. But there is an

  936. invitation through Jesus, which we'll

  937. unpack next week, to take steps towards

  938. living that will out. But in the

  939. interim, wherever you find yourself

  940. today, whether you're far from God,

  941. close to God, lost, secure, uncertain,

  942. wherever you are in life, there is a

  943. recalculating,

  944. a recalibrating, a redirecting, an

  945. invitation to come to me, all of you who

  946. are weary and heavy, and I will give you

  947. rest. So as we close today, my prayer

  948. for you is that as you open your heart

  949. to him, his voice, his presence will

  950. begin to niggle, whisper, just lead you

  951. along the right path. What seems like a

  952. baby steps because think about as well

  953. when you type in, you know, I want to go

  954. to like X place. It doesn't give you all
