-
Indeed, we have just sung one of the
-
greatest truths of the Bible that we
-
love because he first loved us.
-
And not only that, but we are to fix our
-
eyes on Jesus, the author and the
-
perfector of our faith. If you don't
-
have a sermon outline, some men have
-
come forward to the front to give one to
-
you. Simply lift your hand. If you're
-
new to us,
-
um I think it might be important for me
-
to take just a second and explain to you
-
what's about to happen.
-
Um
-
uh we we have some new folks in the life
-
of our church um and uh they they were
-
sharing with me. They said, "I've been
-
coming for a year and I I really have
-
learned to love the teaching of the
-
Bible, but I had no idea what happened
-
the very first Sunday I was here. In
-
fact, I went out to the car wondering
-
what just happened. Um what did I just
-
see? What what does it Was I in a
-
college classroom or was I in a church?
-
I'm not sure.
-
And um
-
it's because we do study the Bible.
-
Jesus said, "Come and learn of me." And
-
so what's about to happen is we're about
-
to study the Bible. We're about to study
-
it what we call expositorily, which
-
means that we're going to go through
-
section by section and sometimes it's
-
word by word or phrase by phrase, verse
-
by verse as we study. Right now, we are
-
studying
-
in Genesis. Now, um
-
not only do we study the Bible, but we
-
also at different times of the year we
-
study church history a little bit
-
because church history can be very
-
helpful. On Wednesday night in October,
-
I am going to be telling the story of
-
the Reformation. So, I'm going to be
-
teaching something called the
-
Reformation story, the events, the
-
people, and the doctrines of the
-
Reformation. Um some of you don't
-
realize that had the Reformation not
-
occurred, this service might be being
-
conducted in Latin.
-
But because
-
the Reformation occurred 500 years ago,
-
we are not singing in Latin, we are not
-
preaching in Latin when we come to
-
worship. So, some of you are a little
-
confused about what in the world does
-
Latin have to do with it. Come on
-
Wednesday night and we will be hearing
-
the exciting story of the reclamation of
-
the gospel into the life of the church.
-
But our current series is this. So, on
-
Sunday mornings we've been looking at
-
Genesis 1 through 11. We've entitled
-
this the God of everything. And as we've
-
studied this is message seven. But as
-
part of message seven, few messages ago
-
we looked at day one of creation. And
-
help me out. Let's say it together. Day
-
one was what?
-
Let there be light. We studied how God
-
is the center of creation. He's the
-
beginning of it is this. He's the first
-
subject of the Bible. He's the first
-
actor of the Bible. And listen to this,
-
the first words ever spoken in the
-
universe, that God spoke in the universe
-
was, let there be light. That was
-
Genesis 1:1. Then we came to day two,
-
preparing for life. Day two,
-
in in fact verse two is kind of a
-
strange
-
verse. It it is this picture that there
-
was a primordial, just a
-
watery presence. The earth was covered
-
in water. There was darkness. God
-
created light. And then we see God
-
separating the waters from the water. We
-
see that he's creating a heavens that is
-
there. So, that was day two. He's
-
preparing the world for life. This
-
morning we come to day three, land,
-
seas, and trees. So, I want us to see
-
this this morning as we come to this.
-
So, notice there in day one, this is on
-
your review. Go to the review. Day one
-
day one, God created light and separated
-
light from darkness. You're going to
-
notice a theme here. He separated light
-
from darkness. In day two, God separated
-
the waters from the expanse. That means
-
that he made a space between the waters.
-
This is the heavens. And so there was
-
this emphasis of separation. We see it
-
now today in day three, God makes
-
another key separation.
-
And we're going to see this is part of
-
his process. This is part of his plan,
-
and we're going to gain some things from
-
this as we study. Now, let's go to the
-
box on the page there in Genesis 1:9-13.
-
If you're watching online, you can see
-
the text will be on the screen in front
-
of you. And by the way, you can also if
-
you're bring coming to us online, you
-
can download our notes that everyone
-
here is everyone here is has a four-page
-
outline to help them
-
um study this morning. You can download
-
those notes and also follow along. Look
-
at verse nine with me.
-
And God said,
-
"Let the waters under the heavens, so
-
these are the lower waters, this would
-
be the seas, let the waters under the
-
heavens be gathered together in one
-
place, and let the dry land appear."
-
So, before this, there was not dry land.
-
Let the dry land appear. And then look
-
what it says at the end of verse nine.
-
Read it out loud.
-
Okay, that was half of you. Now, all of
-
you. Let's read it again. At the end of
-
verse nine, what does it say?
-
Excellent. This is amazing. God commands
-
it, it was so.
-
Verse 10. God called the dry land earth.
-
And the waters that were gathered
-
together, he called seas.
-
And God saw that it was good. Verse 11.
-
And God said said, "Let the earth sprout
-
vegetation, plants yielding seed, fruit
-
trees bearing fruit in which is their
-
seed, each according to its kind on the
-
earth." And what does it say there at
-
the end of verse 11?
-
And it was so. So, twice we see that in
-
day three.
-
Verse 12.
-
The earth brought forth vegetation,
-
plants yielding seed according to their
-
own kind, trees bearing fruit in which
-
is their seed, each according to its
-
kind.
-
And God saw that it was good. Verse 13.
-
And there was evening, and there was
-
morning,
-
the third day.
-
So, let's see some key things from this
-
text. First of all, notice what happens
-
on day three. This is on your outline
-
here. Notice this. The The first thing
-
that we notice is that God separates the
-
waters from the dry land. And secondly,
-
we see that God names them. And what
-
does he name them? Earth and sea.
-
And then we see that God declares them
-
good. Now, part of our noticing here
-
that God names things is this It's You
-
know, when you when you make something,
-
you get to name it.
-
And so, that's part of the authority
-
that we see here. And throughout this,
-
what we've studied so far, what we've
-
pointed out is that number one, God is
-
the center, not creation, not man. And
-
all of this narrative
-
that we see that in the very first
-
verse. What does it say? In the
-
beginning
-
God, right? In the beginning God created
-
the heavens and the earth. He created
-
everything. So, he has the authority to
-
create, he does it, we start to see a
-
little bit of how he does it. We could
-
fill the universe with volumes of of of
-
technical manuals of how he constructed
-
everything, how he created physical
-
matter to exist. We could we could go in
-
in in if he was God, he could have made
-
this entire book
-
about the physical universe and how he
-
did it.
-
But instead, what we see is that he just
-
gives us really two chapters out of
-
1,189
-
chapters of the Bible. He gives us two
-
chapters on how he did it.
-
So, that must tell us that the physical
-
creation and how he did it, while it's
-
important, it's not nearly as important
-
as your spiritual life because the rest
-
of the Bible is about your spiritual
-
life before him.
-
Really, the rest of the Bible is how you
-
relate to him. So, God separates the
-
waters from the dry land. He names it
-
because he it is good and that it is
-
right. The third thing he does is he
-
creates the various kinds of vegetation.
-
We're going to see why this is
-
important. On your outline, it says
-
procreative plants. We see that. They
-
have seeds in them.
-
They sprout growth and then they can
-
they can multiply. So, we see this.
-
That's going to come up more.
-
God declares them good as well.
-
So, when we looked at day one, we asked
-
ourselves, do you remember this? We
-
asked ourselves what creation would be
-
like without the key element that was
-
created by God on that day. And does
-
anybody remember on day one, what was
-
the key element of the universe that God
-
created?
-
It was light.
-
And so, we ask ourselves, what would
-
happen if he hadn't done that?
-
What if he created everything else, but
-
he hadn't created light?
-
Well, I
-
I I think that it it just wouldn't work,
-
right?
-
And it certainly would Would any of you
-
like to bang around life in the dark?
-
I mean, just no light? You say, "Well,
-
blind people do that." Yes, that's a
-
very few, and that's a very big
-
handicap. Some of them tremendous
-
blessings of their lives, their their
-
blindness brings about actually things
-
that many of us have never thought
-
about. God gives them the grace to do
-
that, but everyone would say, "Oh, how I
-
would hate to lose my sight. How light
-
is a help to us. How light is
-
wonderful." And we we see that the very
-
first thing that God creates in
-
everything is light.
-
And we'd hate to imagine our universe
-
without that.
-
Now again, we can ask this question.
-
Notice on your outline. Now we can ask
-
ourselves what our world would be like
-
without dry land or vegetation.
-
What would our world be like without dry
-
land or vegetation?
-
Well, we can kind of know what it would
-
be like. You say, "Really? How can we
-
kind of know?" Well, um think about this
-
with me. There are worlds like this.
-
Think of Jupiter's moon moon Europa.
-
Think of Jupiter's moon Europa. I I want
-
you to kind of notice Europa. Here's
-
Europa. And I I want you to see this.
-
Europa is a is a massive moon around the
-
massive planet of Jupiter.
-
And while it looks like a solid surface,
-
and it is solid, it's still water. It's
-
just frozen water. This is what's
-
amazing.
-
Um scientists tell us, and they do this
-
from from various probes that have gone
-
by and and conducted all kinds of tests
-
concerning the electrical conductiveness
-
of the moon. and what they said was
-
Europa is really covered with what is
-
thought to be salt water.
-
And the outer layer of Europa is ice,
-
but it's really a planet of water, or
-
excuse me, a moon of the size of a
-
planet of water. It's a liquid
-
underneath the surface. So, um when you
-
come to look at it, that's frozen ice,
-
and then there's dust and dirt that has
-
accumulated on the surface, but if it
-
were to thaw out, it would look like
-
this. The entire surface of the whole
-
thing would look like this.
-
And there's other bodies that we've
-
discovered that we we think have not
-
just a gaseous surface, but even a
-
liquid surface. Now, when we come to the
-
word of God, and we come to see this,
-
this is where it starts out.
-
That the waters were covering the earth.
-
I want you to think about this for just
-
a moment, and you can kind of almost
-
imagine a video presentation of this
-
from the movie Interstellar. Some of you
-
saw the movie Interstellar.
-
We see that the spacecraft that is there
-
traveling from world to world looking
-
for and it's interesting, they're
-
looking for options for a dying earth.
-
They're looking for other places, kind
-
of like what Elon Musk and and Jeff
-
Bezos are going after to to get to a
-
plan B for planet Earth. It's very
-
interesting that humans are thinking
-
about that, but their spacecraft goes
-
and it comes to this world
-
that is simply covered in water.
-
The whole planet is covered in water,
-
and it's covered in this case in
-
knee-deep water. They go and they say,
-
"Well, this
-
this is obviously no place
-
where we could survive. There's not,
-
apparently, there's no life here, but
-
there is water."
-
And so, we've of seen imagery like that
-
and we can just imagine what it would be
-
like if God stopped in his creation
-
process and didn't bring along day
-
three. It would just be back
-
to water to water.
-
Look on your outline though, it's more
-
than the fictional Miller's planet in
-
Interstellar. It it also the picture
-
would be
-
what if there was no vegetation?
-
Well, we also know what that would look
-
like.
-
Um
-
not ready to turn over page yet. Sorry.
-
I want you to imagine both of these. I
-
want you to imagine a world covered with
-
water and I want you to imagine a world
-
that was devoid of anything living.
-
Devoid of any planet. We know what that
-
would look like. We've sent many probes
-
to Mars.
-
We've sent rovers and they wandered
-
around from all the way back in the 70s.
-
We got pictures of what it looks like.
-
In the 80s.
-
Some areas very rocky, other areas very
-
dusty. Something that looks a little bit
-
like ET sitting there just not alive.
-
It's a rover.
-
And they sent back fantastic pictures
-
um of a lifeless planet.
-
A planet with no vegetation.
-
Um
-
this next picture is actually a false
-
color picture because the sky actually
-
should be orange um because there is no
-
ozone in that in that very very thin
-
atmosphere of Mars. There's almost no
-
atmosphere of Mars.
-
Um very very little um that is there,
-
but this is an accurate picture. This is
-
a color accurate picture of Mars. It is
-
desolate and it is red. And we ask
-
ourselves, what kind of a world would
-
any of these be? Either just completely
-
covered with water or
-
no vegetation. And then the next two
-
questions are, would you want to live
-
there?
-
Could you live there? Now, Elon Musk is
-
saying,
-
"I want to go try it out." And I'm like,
-
"Go to it, buddy."
-
I'm not interested in You know, I've
-
been to some beautiful islands before.
-
And it's funny, if you meet people that
-
live on islands islands in the Caribbean
-
or you meet people that even live in
-
Hawaii. I've been to Hawaii one time.
-
Cheryl was working there, so Marcy and I
-
went and stayed with her for a little
-
bit. And do you know what they talk
-
about even on the Big Island, the Big
-
Island of Hawaii?
-
If you talk to people who live there for
-
a while, do you know what they sometimes
-
suffer from?
-
Rock fever.
-
Do you know what rock fever means?
-
They want to get out of there.
-
They're glad to be there. I mean, they
-
live in what a lot of people think is
-
paradise. But after you've been on that
-
rock for a while, they start getting
-
antsy and they want to they want to get
-
off the island. They they want to go to
-
America. They want to go to Europe. They
-
want they want to go somewhere. They
-
want to get on a real continent.
-
Now, if you feel that way in the
-
beautiful place of Hawaii, how much more
-
would you feel that way in this place?
-
I think after a while, you might start
-
thinking, "I got to get out of here."
-
And the only problem is it's 10 months
-
back to back to Earth or whatever it is.
-
So, all of this could cause us to think
-
this. I I I want you to compare that
-
picture
-
with this picture.
-
I want you to compare the beauty of the
-
oceans and the beauty of the land
-
and the beauty of God's
-
amazing creativity in the plant life and
-
in the fruit, and in the fields
-
that he gives us.
-
So, when we look at verse three, this is
-
really important. When we when we
-
consider our world and we consider God's
-
creativity,
-
and we consider his creative power, and
-
we consider, listen to this, his
-
creative process, what we're seeing is
-
he does all things well.
-
He doesn't provide us all the tremendous
-
details. He just simply lets us see what
-
it could be like. And in this modern day
-
and time, we are privileged to live in
-
an era where we have telescopes, and
-
where we have space probes, and where we
-
have a few other things where we can
-
actually go and see what it would be
-
like had he not done what he's done.
-
And so, we see the beauty of his plan,
-
and that brings us to number two. God
-
separates the waters from the land.
-
>> [snorts]
-
>> Look with me in verse nine.
-
And God said,
-
And God said, Let the waters under the
-
heavens be gathered into one place, and
-
let the dry land appear,
-
and it was so. God called the dry land
-
Earth, and the waters that he gathered
-
together, he called seas, and God saw
-
that it was good.
-
I want you to think with me for a moment
-
about the magnitude
-
of the oceans.
-
Um it's no secret, practically every
-
sermon these days I talk about it.
-
I love the ocean.
-
I love the fact that we live not far
-
from the ocean. We live close by to the
-
sea.
-
When I get very long periods of time
-
when I'm not by the ocean, I get a
-
little antsy. I I to get to the ocean.
-
How many of you kind of enjoy the ocean?
-
You You love to go there. You love to
-
see it. And it's funny when people who
-
have not lived near the ocean, people
-
who from Oklahoma, friends friends and
-
family, and others people who have been
-
raised in other places,
-
um and we take them down to the beach
-
and we just go walk along the boardwalk,
-
you know, there's a lot of times they'll
-
just stand there and they'll just look
-
out there at the beach and and they'll
-
make all kinds of comments. They'll say,
-
"Man, it's so big."
-
They'll say, "Look at that. It's so
-
far."
-
And they'll they'll say I One guy stood
-
there and he said, "Man, that's a lot of
-
water."
-
>> [laughter]
-
>> Yeah, it is the ocean.
-
Um
-
But if you were to take a deep dive,
-
literally,
-
and think about the weight of the water.
-
Gallon of water weighs 8 lb.
-
And there's there's weight. It builds
-
up. The crushing
-
pressure of just mere depth.
-
There's tremendous power in that. The
-
power of the tides.
-
The enormous force
-
of wind and waves. It's It's really
-
amazing. In fact, I want you to see
-
these basic facts.
-
About 71%
-
of the earth is covered About 71% of the
-
earth is covered by ocean.
-
So, that's a
-
a very vast majority of the surface of
-
the earth is covered by ocean. The seas
-
are huge.
-
But not only are they huge, but they're
-
also deep. The average depth of the
-
ocean is 2.3 miles deep, 12,000
-
ft deep.
-
How many of you have a swimming pool or
-
a swimming pool in your complex?
-
How deep is your swimming pool?
-
6 feet
-
5 feet Back in the old days, 70s
-
and 80s, 60s and 80s 60s and 70s they
-
were building swimming pools that were 8
-
and 10 feet deep. They were great.
-
I don't know how we got to these wimpy
-
6-ft deep pools. Those are no fun, but
-
but the average depth of the ocean is
-
12,000
-
feet deep.
-
I mean, look at how much water
-
fills the oceans.
-
352
-
quintillion
-
gallons and many of you have never even
-
heard of a quintillion.
-
That's a lot of zeros. That's a lot of
-
water.
-
And then multiply that times eight
-
and then you know how heavy it is.
-
The deepest point of the oceans is
-
Challenger Deep in the Mariana Trench.
-
This is over by the Philippines. It's
-
36,000
-
feet deep or that's nearly 7 miles deep.
-
And at that depth, the pressure is
-
16,000
-
pounds per square inch. So, 1 square
-
inch has 16,000 pounds of pressure
-
pushing on it.
-
That's power. That's That's It's It's
-
hard to imagine
-
this. And what we see here is that if
-
all of the land
-
was even
-
if all if there were no mountains and
-
there was no valleys if all the land was
-
even, it was completely even, water
-
would cover all of the earth 1.7
-
miles deep. That's a lot of water.
-
But we we don't have it that way.
-
97%
-
of the earth's water is in the oceans.
-
Only 3% of the earth's water is in lakes
-
and rivers and streams
-
um that are around us. So, um the oceans
-
are huge and there's there's a reason
-
why God in his wisdom shows us that he
-
separates
-
and causes the land to come up to dry
-
ground. And I want us to see some things
-
here. Think about this as we as we look
-
at the magnitude of the oceans. Look at
-
Isaiah 40 and verse 12. Can you read
-
Isaiah 40 verse 12 with me? Let's read
-
it out loud.
-
Who has measured the waters in the
-
hollow of his hand?
-
The oceans of the world
-
God can hold in the hollow of his hand.
-
Look at Job 38.
-
Or who shut in the sea with doors when
-
it burst out from the womb? When I was
-
made clouds in it when I made clouds its
-
garment and thick darkness its swaddling
-
band and prescribed limits for it and
-
set bars and doors and thus said, "Thus
-
far you shall come and no further." This
-
is talking about stopping
-
the water, raising up the land. And here
-
shall your proud waves be stayed. That
-
means that they shall stay there.
-
In Psalm 104 verses 6 through 9, we see
-
similar ideas. You [snorts] covered it
-
with the deep, that's the oceans, as
-
with a garment. The water stood above
-
the mountains. At your rebuke, they
-
fled. At the sound of your trumpet, they
-
took flight. The mountains rose, the
-
valleys sank down to the place where you
-
appointed for them. Look at verse 9. You
-
set a boundary that they shall that that
-
may they may not pass so that they might
-
not again cover the earth. Now, whether
-
that is speaking in this Psalm of
-
creation or whether that would be
-
speaking
-
of the time after the flood which we are
-
going to study, either is true. We see
-
God's power over the seas and his
-
purpose. Notice this, God sets the
-
boundaries of the sea for his good
-
design and purposes.
-
He has a purpose for this. He has a
-
purpose in his preparation for life.
-
Look at verse three or or excuse me,
-
number three on page three. In verses 9
-
and 10, we see that God causes the dry
-
land to appear. Now, very often when we
-
read these passages, we just go flying
-
through them. We don't really Yeah, he
-
made light and then he did this and then
-
he did that. We don't We don't think
-
very deeply. Maybe we don't think about
-
the magnitude of the oceans.
-
Maybe we don't think about him causing
-
there to be dry land and the fact that
-
he had a purpose in this. And this is
-
why it's good for us as a church to take
-
the time to work through to walk through
-
hear these opening words of scripture
-
that show us the mighty and the majesty
-
God the mighty hand of God and the
-
majesty of God that he has the ability
-
to do these things because when we start
-
to see that he is the God of creation
-
on the massive scale of the universe and
-
our world and the oceans and the land
-
and the mountains.
-
That brings in proper perspective his
-
ability to work
-
in our little lives.
-
So, it's very important that we see and
-
gain all that we can from the Genesis
-
account. Look at this with me. In verse
-
9 it says, "And God said, 'Let the
-
waters under the heavens be gathered
-
together into one place, and let the dry
-
land appear.'"
-
And it was so.
-
Now, under under that you see that God
-
does not tell us how he accomplished
-
this.
-
But he does tell us that he did it.
-
This means no one else did it. This
-
means a process didn't do it that was
-
apart from him.
-
It is good for us to remember that when
-
you go to the mountains and you go to
-
the Cliffs of Dover in Southern England,
-
or you go to the Alps, or the Rockies,
-
or you go to the shoreline of Maine, or
-
you go to the Big Sur in California, or
-
wherever it is that you go and you see
-
the formations of the world and you see
-
the boundaries set by the oceans, you
-
can say, "My God's word tells me that my
-
God did this."
-
This beauty that I'm looking at is what
-
he did, and he did it for a reason.
-
It's a beauty
-
that translates to our lives. Notice
-
that Notice this. So, his method is not
-
as important as his sovereign command
-
and ability. He has a sovereign command
-
that he does and it happens. As we've
-
noticed here, notice that God names the
-
dry land Earth and he gathers the waters
-
and he names them
-
seas.
-
He names also, this is a good thing for
-
us to recognize,
-
um
-
one of the commentators that I was
-
looking at, um just really points this
-
out. Notice this. God names the great
-
realms. He
-
What do we mean by a realm?
-
If we If we talk about the realm of a
-
kingdom, that we we talk about that
-
entire kingdom, that domain.
-
And so, it's a big space. It's a big
-
place
-
that that's defined
-
by a certain idea. Here we see the realm
-
of the day. He calls it day. He says,
-
"The darkness." This is night, the realm
-
of the night.
-
And then there's the realm of the
-
heavens. This is the heavens both in the
-
sky that we have here on Earth, but it's
-
also the heavens that is in all of the
-
universe, the heavens.
-
He calls the dry land Earth. He names
-
that Earth. It's the realm of dry land.
-
It's a large area, even though it's only
-
30%
-
of the Earth's surface.
-
Still, you go and look across America,
-
it's big. Go look across South South
-
America, it's big. Go look across
-
Africa, it's massive. And then go look
-
all the way across Europe, 12 time
-
zones, it goes from one end to the
-
other, from Western Europe all the way
-
to the other end of Russia. It is
-
massive. It is a big place. It is the
-
realm of dry land.
-
It's good for us to remember, but here's
-
what God does in these great realms. He
-
names them, but we're going to see later
-
and he he shares his dominion
-
with Adam.
-
He allows Adam to start naming things.
-
Now, that's kind of amazing.
-
If I created the whole animal kingdom,
-
I'm not sure I'd let you name it.
-
I mean, if I came up with aardvarks and
-
anteaters and I came up with zebras and
-
everything in between
-
and all of this beauty, I'm not sure I'd
-
let other people put names on it. But,
-
you know what? That's what God does, in
-
his generosity.
-
It's kind of like when Pastor Ben is
-
working on something with Noah
-
and Pastor Ben kind of lets Noah take
-
over part of the project, lets Noah
-
decide which way the line is going to go
-
and what curve is going to be there for
-
this and how it's going to look. When
-
Pastor Ben just kind of lets him do it,
-
then then Noah is sharing under the
-
authority of Pastor Ben, his his dad,
-
working on something and Noah starts
-
doing his part with it and so there's
-
this beautiful generosity.
-
And that's what we see God
-
do with little old measly man.
-
God is generous.
-
So, we see his generosity. He shares his
-
dominion
-
with Adam. So, from the start we're
-
starting to see some some big things
-
about God.
-
That he has the authority to do it all
-
by himself, he has the authority to name
-
it, he deserves to be able to name it.
-
But, then we see a little picture of
-
what's about to come
-
when we see Adam and we see Adam given
-
the responsibilities.
-
God's generosity. All of this
-
talks about God's generosity. Look at
-
number four, God covers the land with
-
vegetation.
-
This is part of what we see in the the
-
generosity of it. Look at verse 11 and
-
12 are very interesting.
-
Uh and we're going to see this
-
progression. They they they almost
-
repeat word for word everything, but
-
there's there's one minor difference.
-
Let's look at it and see here. God said,
-
"Let the earth sprout vegetation, plants
-
yielding seed and fruit trees bearing
-
fruit in which is their seed each
-
according to its kind on the earth and
-
it was so the earth brought forth
-
vegetation plants yielding seed
-
according to their own kinds trees
-
bearing fruit in which is their seed
-
each according to its own kind and God
-
saw that it was good. So day three moves
-
from
-
forming
-
to filling.
-
Remember we [snorts] said that we we we
-
said that we're going to see that God is
-
forming the earth and then he starts
-
filling the earth.
-
And the first part that he does the
-
filling with is the vegetation.
-
So day three sees life come into
-
creation. Um you see this is the first
-
when we're talking about vegetation,
-
when we're talking about when we're
-
talking about plants, we're talking
-
about things that are alive, things that
-
have life. We go from physical science
-
to biology.
-
The study of life.
-
Notice the emphasis on progressing
-
production in both of these verses. We
-
see there's going to be sprouting
-
vegetation, there's going to be plants
-
yielding seed and there's going to be
-
fruit trees bearing fruit in which is
-
their seed.
-
You say yeah, of course that's just
-
that's just horticulture. It's not No
-
friends, listen, it's much more than
-
that. The reason this is included in
-
Genesis for us is to see the nature of
-
God's intent for life to go and to grow
-
and to progress and to not stop.
-
It's God's intention that we would fill
-
and multiply, that the plants would fill
-
and multiply on the earth. This is God's
-
design for life. This is God's beauty in
-
his plan
-
for life.
-
This is going to this is going to
-
translate into many spiritual things in
-
our lives.
-
So, in Genesis, we're seeing the
-
physical world developing, but that
-
physical world is going to show us a
-
whole spiritual world.
-
And that's why it mentions seeds
-
yielding fruit.
-
There's a bunch of spiritual principles
-
that are going to come out of this
-
for us to see that God designed our
-
whole existence to be around.
-
It's a progressing
-
production of this. Notice this life has
-
continuation
-
and reproduction built into it.
-
And notice that this life has variety in
-
various kinds
-
that come from the start.
-
And I think it's very interesting that
-
it also seems to be an immediate
-
refutation in a incipient way of
-
Darwinism from the start.
-
That this wasn't a progressive evolution
-
of these things. This is day three and
-
God does it.
-
This is day three in the plants have the
-
seeds in them to reproduce.
-
There's there's there's no talk about an
-
extended time here. This is God's start.
-
He He creates the trees with the seeds
-
to continue.
-
Notice with me number five.
-
Day three again reveals God's absolute
-
authority.
-
And that is one of the key themes
-
throughout this entire narrative.
-
That it's not a bunch of gods fighting
-
with each other, as we've said before.
-
God is inspiring Moses to write it down,
-
so God's people know, "No, it wasn't a
-
bunch of gods fighting in the heavenly
-
somewhere to create the world. Your sun
-
and your moon and your stars and your
-
land and your fruit and your fields and
-
your wheat didn't come as a result of a
-
bunch of gods either fighting with one
-
another or gods giving birth to each
-
other, and that's how So, all the
-
mythologies of those things are false
-
[snorts] gods."
-
And so, God gives Genesis to Moses, God
-
gives the beginning story to Moses, so
-
that God's people, under Moses'
-
leadership, can know clearly that it is
-
the God who is the creator of all
-
things. It's God who is the or
-
originator of all things, and we are his
-
people.
-
Now, verse 11 is really interesting. I
-
told you that they almost They're almost
-
exact, they mimic each other, and here's
-
the point. We hear God's command in
-
verse 11, and we see creation's response
-
in verse 12.
-
So, God commands it, and then creation
-
exists. God creation responds. Remember
-
we said last week, it's very interesting
-
that God speaks, he makes commands, all
-
of creation, all of physical matter obey
-
him, and God creates man, and what does
-
man do?
-
Disobeys him.
-
>> [snorts]
-
>> Really from the start.
-
Look at Psalm 33 verses 8 through 9.
-
"Let all the earth fear the Lord. Let
-
all the inhabitants of the world stand
-
in awe of him." That's the point. That's
-
the point of Genesis.
-
"For he spoke, and what?"
-
"And it came to be.
-
He commanded and what?
-
And it stood firm.
-
This is This is a beautiful
-
beautiful
-
synopsis of what we see in Genesis 1. We
-
would do well to follow creation's
-
example.
-
Number six, day three.
-
Day three is revealing the wisdom and
-
provision of God.
-
And this is so good. It it it shows us
-
God's plan. Look, God is preparing the
-
world for creatures he will make.
-
You see, before the birds, there are
-
trees. We see that in day three. Before
-
the cattle, there is grass. We see that
-
in day three. Before Adam, there is
-
food. Before Eve, there is fruit.
-
God is providing.
-
God in his wisdom and his process. Uh
-
it would be a bad idea to create Adam
-
first and have him with say give him
-
swimming lessons out there. Then okay,
-
watch out Adam, get out of the way. The
-
land is coming up out of the water.
-
Okay, stand over there on that rock.
-
Okay. Just I know you're hungry. You're
-
just going to have to wait until I
-
create food.
-
That's not what he does with Adam.
-
It's not what he does with the birds.
-
It's not what he does with the trees.
-
It's It's all in order.
-
He does it well.
-
Over and over again, it says it is good.
-
Look at Psalm 104 verse 14.
-
You cause the grass to grow for the
-
livestock and the plants for for man to
-
cultivate that he may bring forth food
-
from the earth.
-
So, we see the goodness of God. We see
-
the provision of God. We see that God
-
provides. Now, Jesus keys on this.
-
Jesus looks at creation and there's a
-
spiritual
-
lesson and reason and a profound message
-
to us.
-
From the Sermon on the Mount, when Jesus
-
says it this way, he refers to God's
-
wise provision for his people. Look at
-
verse 25.
-
Therefore, I tell you, Jesus is
-
speaking. Therefore, I tell you, do not
-
be anxious about your life,
-
what you will eat or what you will
-
drink, nor about your body, or what you
-
will you will put on. Is not life more
-
than food and the body more than
-
clothing?
-
Look at what?
-
The birds of the air. They neither sow,
-
nor do they reap, nor gather into barns,
-
yet your heavenly Father feeds them. You
-
Are you not of more worth or are you not
-
more valuable than they? Verse 27. And
-
which of you by being anxious can add a
-
single hour to his lifespan? And why are
-
you anxious about clothing?
-
Consider the lilies of the field, how
-
they grow. They neither toil nor spin,
-
so they're they're not they're not
-
making clothing.
-
Yet I tell you that even Solomon in all
-
of his glory was not arrayed like one of
-
these. Verse 30. But if God so clothes
-
the grass of the field, which today is
-
alive and tomorrow is thrown into the
-
oven, so it was used for fuel to burn,
-
will he not much more clothe you,
-
O you of little faith? Therefore, do not
-
be anxious. Third time anxiety is
-
brought up. Verse 25, verse 27, and now
-
in verse 31. Very appropriate for us in
-
2026, when anxiety is one of the biggest
-
issues in our lives.
-
Verse 31, "Therefore, do not be anxious,
-
saying, 'What shall we eat? What shall
-
we drink? What shall we wear?'"
-
Verse 32, "For the Gentiles are those
-
who don't seek God.
-
For the Gentiles seek all these things,
-
and your heavenly Father knows that you
-
need them all."
-
Now, this is the God of creation who
-
knows what you need. And this is the
-
Lord who spoke the world. He This is the
-
word say it is Jesus, word in the flesh,
-
the one who was present at at creation.
-
Jesus is saying, "You don't need to be
-
anxious about the things in your life. I
-
created the world for you. I did it the
-
right way. It was good. It is
-
Even in your fallenness, I still know
-
how to take care of you."
-
So, when you study Genesis 1, and you
-
study the days of creation, you can have
-
great encouragement that God is applying
-
the power of his creation to the power
-
of caring for the needs of your life.
-
What a beautiful thing that God would
-
bring up the birds of the fear field,
-
the lilies of the birds of the air, the
-
lilies of the field and say,
-
"Are you not worth much more
-
than them?"
-
You see, so day three also shows us
-
this. Both in verse 10 and in verse 13,
-
it repeats this statement that God saw
-
that it was good.
-
Twice we see that God's work is good in
-
day three.
-
We not only see his great power, but we
-
see his great goodness. Not only can he
-
move the magnitude of the oceans aside,
-
let the dry land appear, he has the
-
power to do all of this mass I mean, we
-
need a few feet of extra beach at
-
Hollywood, Florida, and we have to get
-
trucks and whole systems and we're
-
mining it and we're bringing it and
-
they'll work month after month. They
-
have to It'll cost millions and millions
-
and millions of dollars to move a little
-
bit of sand and God can cause one storm
-
to go by and move it all again.
-
I mean, when we were in St. Augustine, a
-
hurricane went by and I went down there
-
to check the beach after the hurricane
-
and the beach was gone.
-
I'm serious.
-
I mean, it was 150 ft of beach was gone.
-
I mean, for miles.
-
We see his power.
-
But we also see in the creation plan his
-
great goodness and his provision.
-
You see, he's he is revealing this
-
standard of things
-
being as they ought to be. That's why it
-
says, "It is good." Look at Psalm 104
-
and verse 24. I'd like to ask you to
-
read that out loud with me.
-
Let's read.
-
O Lord, how manifold are your works. In
-
wisdom you have made them all.
-
In wisdom have you made them all. Amen?
-
Let's stand together for prayer.
-
Father, we thank you this morning that
-
you are the God of creation.
-
That we were not created by a set of
-
warring gods or myths.
-
We were not created by
-
an accidental explosion.
-
We are not created by anything other
-
than a loving God of intelligence
-
and holiness and grace.
-
Father, we thank you that you created
-
the waters of the earth and then
-
separated them and gave dry land so that
-
we would have a place to live.
-
Father, I thank you that we don't live
-
in a place that looks like Mars
-
without vegetation, without food.
-
>> [music]
-
>> Lord, I thank you that you gave the
-
plants and the trees of the earth.
-
Trees after their own kind and the seeds
-
that allow them to continue to propagate
-
and grow.
-
>> [music]
-
>> Father, I thank you that you've given us
-
all of this to show us your heart of
-
provision.
-
>> [music]
-
>> And Lord, I thank you especially for
-
that Matthew passage that relates all of
-
that down to our daily lives.
-
Lord, that the God of creation is the
-
God who says, "I will take care of you
-
[music]
-
if you will listen to me."
-
Now Lord, those who don't seek you
-
continually search for all of those
-
things in their own strength,
-
known as the Gentiles or those who don't
-
know God.
-
Lord, I pray that we would not be like
-
that.
-
I pray that we would be a people [music]
-
who recognize that there's a reason you
-
did what you did.
-
And in your love and in your grace, that
-
you would not only provide our food,
-
but far more importantly, you would
-
provide our savior
-
who would wash away our sins
-
and make us ready for heaven.
-
And heaven not only someday after we
-
die, but
-
you would give us eternal life now,
-
forgiveness of sin, freedom
-
from sin. Father, we thank you for being
-
so loving
-
and gracious and wise
-
>> [music]
-
>> a God.
-
Lord, I pray for those who bear heavy
-
burdens this morning
-
and have really been nervous about some
-
things. Staying up at night, can't
-
sleep.
-
Racing thoughts.
-
Burdened hearts. Shoulders heavy with
-
a load of care. Father, I pray
-
that you would give light to their life
-
to their mind and heart to trust in you.
-
>> [music]
-
>> I pray that those who do not know the
-
grace of Christ would run to him
-
and see that he died for their sins
-
so that they don't have to be anxious.
-
[music]
-
Lord, I pray that you would come and
-
relieve us of burdens that we bear
-
as we trust in you. In Jesus' [music]
-
name.
-
Amen.
-
We're going to sing O God, the uncreated
-
one. He was from the beginning. He's the
-
author of our salvation. He wrote the
-
laws of time and space and he fashioned
-
the worlds to what? [music]
-
His design. Let's sing it with all our
-
heart this morning.
