  1. Hebrews chapter 3. If you found your

    Hebrews 3 chapter mention

  2. place, if you'll stand in honor of God's

  3. word, we'll read it together. Hebrews

    Hebrews 3 chapter mention

  4. chapter 3. Our text this night this

  5. evening will come uh from verses 1

  6. through verse 6. It's been a couple

  7. weeks since we've been here. So, I'll

  8. just remind you and there'll be a little

  9. bit of tiein here as we move into

  10. chapter 3 to chapters 1 and two. But the

  11. author here is establishing the

  12. greatness the glory of Jesus the son of

  13. God uh over the angels in particular in

  14. the last chap uh two chapters that we've

  15. seen and then uh toward the second half

  16. of chapter 2 we saw that uh about the

  17. condescension of the son of god how he

  18. came from um how he came down from um

  19. heaven as the son of god and became

  20. robed in human flesh. Um, we're in

  21. Hebrews, so let's put the slide up

  22. there. Everyone's gonna continue staring

  23. at it, distracted. So, let's get the

  24. Hebrews on up there. There we go. All

  25. right. And my clock restarted. So, that

  26. means that none of that time just passed

  27. in real life. So, I do have a clock. If

  28. it goes long, it's because the clock's

  29. not up there, which has happened the

  30. last two Sundays. So, that's why we've

  31. had hourlong messages. Anyways, chapter

  32. two, the condescension of the son of

  33. God. He became a man to share in our

  34. sufferings, to know our experiences,

  35. to make us his brethren, to bring us to

  36. glory. We saw in chapter 2, he uh came

  37. to sanctify us. He came to defeat the

  38. devil who holds the power of death and

  39. deliver us from the fear of death. And

  40. he came, of course, to serve as our

  41. faithful high priest. He made

  42. reconciliation

  43. for our sins, brought us closer to God,

  44. and for that we give him praise and

  45. thanks. The reason why I review that is

  46. because chapter 3 starts with the word

  47. wherefor. And so this is directly

  48. connected to what he has said in

  49. chapters uh one and two. And so they're

  50. tied in here and we'll see how just that

  51. is. So Hebrews chapter 3 verse 1.

    Hebrews 3:1

  52. Wherefore holy brethren, partakers of

  53. the heavenly calling, consider, there's

  54. the command to us tonight. We need to

  55. consider

  56. something particular about Jesus Christ.

  57. He says, "Consider the apostle and high

  58. priest of our profession, Christ Jesus,

  59. who was faithful to him that appointed

  60. him, as also Moses was faithful in all

  61. his house. For this man was counted

  62. worthy of more glory than Moses, in as

  63. much as he who hath builded the house

  64. hath more honor than the house. For

  65. every house is builded by some man, but

  66. he that built all things is God. And

  67. Moses verily was faithful in all his

  68. house as a servant, for a testimony of

  69. those things which were to be spoken

  70. after. But Christ as a son over his own

  71. house, whose house are we if we hold

  72. fast the confidence and the rejoicing of

  73. the hope firm unto the end. The title of

  74. our message tonight is God's son is more

  75. glorious than God's servant. God's son

  76. is more glorious than God's servant. May

  77. God bless his word. You can be seated

  78. and we'll explain this passage.

  79. Who is the greatest of all time? Who is

  80. the greatest of all time? In some

  81. contexts,

  82. uh the answer to that question is

  83. somewhat debatable. Who is the greatest

  84. actor of all time? We're probably gonna

  85. have different opinions on that. Uh, who

  86. is the greatest president of all time?

  87. Some might say George Washington. Just

  88. go with the first one. There hasn't been

  89. a great one since, right? Or you might

  90. say Ronald Reagan, or you you might say

  91. uh um, you know, some president of

  92. oldtime past, Abraham Lincoln, or

  93. something like that. But people are

  94. going to debate. Everybody's going to

  95. have their opinion on it. Uh, when you

  96. ask who is the greatest basketball

  97. player of all time, it typically comes

  98. down to a contested debate between

  99. Michael Jordan and LeBron James. And

  100. this group in here, I am confident,

  101. would all say Michael Jordan. Pretty

  102. sure because Luke's not here. He might

  103. say he's that generation that doesn't

  104. know Michael Jordan. My daughter knows

  105. it's Michael Jordan because she's been

  106. taught correctly.

  107. So, there are some contexts where the

  108. the greatest of all time can be debated.

  109. But then there are certain contexts

  110. where the debate is settled. To be

  111. honest,

  112. there's no debate that Wayne Gretzky is

  113. the best hockey player of all time. Even

  114. the greatest ones of our generation have

  115. not come close to the statistics that he

  116. put up, including an over 80 goals in

  117. one season. the it's it's it's amazing

  118. if you get to 50 goals and he went over

  119. 80 goals in one season. Just remarkable.

  120. He's the best hockey player of all time.

  121. Although I'm a fan of Peyton Manning and

  122. John Elway, I cannot allow my orange

  123. colored glasses to keep me from

  124. admitting that Tom Brady is probably

  125. unequivocally the best quarterback of

  126. all time. As much as it pains me to say

  127. that,

  128. um, it's difficult to deny that Lionel

  129. Messi is the greatest soccer player of

  130. all time. There might be some who debate

  131. that, but the vast majority would say

  132. that Messi is. And then Jack Nicholas,

  133. the greatest golfer of all time. Tiger

  134. Woods was on track, but he didn't quite

  135. make it there. Uh, and then perhaps that

  136. Muhammad Ali is the greatest heavyweight

  137. boxer of all time. Those are those are

  138. ones that where the debate is really

  139. settled. There's not a whole lot of

  140. debate surrounded surrounding it. Well,

  141. I want to say to you tonight that there

  142. is no debate that the title of the

  143. greatest leader of God's people is Jesus

  144. Christ. He is the greatest. The Bible

  145. sets forth some great leaders. leaders

  146. like Abraham,

  147. Joseph.

  148. Of course, you have kings like David,

  149. Solomon, Hezekiah, Josiah. They were for

  150. the most part good kings and they were

  151. great leaders in some of the best times

  152. of Israel's history. And yet, they each

  153. had their shortcomings. But rising to

  154. the top of the greatest leaders of

  155. Israel. If we set aside Jesus Christ,

  156. probably every one of us would say

  157. Moses. That Moses was the greatest

  158. leader for Israel. Think about it. We've

  159. studied this in Exodus, Leviticus, and

  160. Numbers. See if any of these things ring

  161. a bell that he stood before Pharaoh

  162. during the plagues. God see God work

  163. miraculously in that way. He led Israel

  164. through the Passover.

  165. through the Red Sea on dry ground and

  166. onto Mount Si. He was able to go up into

  167. Mount Si into the cloud of God's glory

  168. and he was able to see a portion of

  169. God's glory and he lived. He ate with

  170. the elders of Israel in a fellowship

  171. meal before God in Mount Si.

  172. He received the law of God directly from

  173. his mouth. He went into the tabernacle

  174. when the cloud of God's glory descended

  175. on it and the glory of God was present

  176. in it. God personally called Moses my

  177. servant six times and he is mentioned

  178. throughout scripture over 41 times as

  179. the servant of the Lord. And throughout

  180. the Bible he is upheld as highly exalted

  181. and glorious in the sight of God's

  182. people. Moses is certainly

  183. great.

  184. And that is the appeal for the believers

  185. that this letter is written to

  186. that while they are facing persecution

  187. for identifying with Jesus Christ, they

  188. were not facing persecution while

  189. identifying with Moses. And so their

  190. propensity here is to shrink back from

  191. Jesus and go toward Moses once again.

  192. But here the author of Hebrews settles

  193. the debate once and for all that God's

  194. son is more glorious than God's servant.

  195. This text calls us to consider

  196. why Christ is more glorious than Moses

  197. was. And the reason that that matters is

  198. because how you view the glory of God's

  199. son will affect how you respond to him

  200. and what he says. Isn't that what we've

  201. seen Hebrews about? God said that he

  202. hath in these last days spoken unto us

  203. by his son. And so the whole message is

  204. a call for them to hear, to heed, to

  205. hold fast to the son of God. And this

  206. argument now shifts to the fact that the

  207. son is more glorious than the servant.

  208. And so I want to show you here first of

  209. all why Christ is more glorious than

  210. Moses. But then I want to show you by

  211. way of application how we should respond

  212. to him in light of his glory. I want you

  213. to notice first of all with me that

  214. God's son is the appointed apostle and

  215. high priest of our profession. That's

  216. what we see in verse one. And verse one

  217. is really a transitional uh statement

  218. here that summarizes where we've been in

  219. Hebrews, but then points us forward to

  220. where we're going uh in Hebrews. Notice

  221. this with me. First of all, it says in

  222. verse one, "Wherefore, holy brethren,

  223. partakers of the heavenly calling." Now,

  224. think about this for a minute. Holy

  225. brethren, partakers of the heavenly

  226. calling. This points us back to chapter

  227. 2, what we were just looking at a couple

  228. of weeks ago, when it says that Jesus is

  229. not ashamed to call us brethren. It says

  230. that he has sanctified us. That means

  231. that he's made us holy. And so you have

  232. this idea that because of the sufferings

  233. of Christ, we who have placed our faith

  234. in him have become holy brethren with

  235. Jesus. That means we are brothers and

  236. sisters together. That's why

  237. occasionally you might hear me call

  238. someone brother so and so. You hear

  239. somebody say sister so and so. It's just

  240. a way of communicating that we are

  241. family in Jesus Christ. That's what it

  242. calls us here. We're brethren who are

  243. made holy by the blood of Jesus Christ.

  244. And then notice it says that we are

  245. partakers of the heavenly calling. The

  246. heavenly calling takes us back to

  247. chapter 2 10 where it says that Jesus

  248. Christ is the captain of our salvation

  249. and that he is bringing many sons to

  250. glory. That speaks of the heavenly glory

  251. that we will one day share with Jesus

  252. Christ in heaven with God. And so you

  253. can see right off the bat that he is

  254. summarizing

  255. who we have become through the

  256. suffering, the death and resurrection of

  257. Jesus Christ. We have become a holy

  258. family of God and we are partakers of a

  259. heavenly calling. But then notice what

  260. he says to us. Consider

  261. consider that we need to think

  262. reflectively

  263. on something here particularly

  264. about Jesus. Why? Because how we think

  265. about Jesus will ultimately shape the

  266. direction we go. these believers, uh,

  267. these Hebrew believers that are facing

  268. persecution, if they don't think Jesus

  269. is on the same level as Moses,

  270. then why would they stick with Jesus

  271. when it's bringing persecution instead

  272. of going back to Moses where there was

  273. no persecution? And so, how they view

  274. Jesus makes an impact on the direction

  275. that they will go here. Here I want to

  276. say the same thing to you that if you

  277. don't think that Jesus is more glorious

  278. than a man then you will go for that man

  279. and follow that teacher and follow that

  280. philosopher or that professor in college

  281. you will follow them if you don't think

  282. Jesus is more glorious than them. That

  283. is the matter that he wants to settle

  284. here. Who is Jesus? Notice first of all

  285. it says that he is the apostle

  286. and high priest of our profession. Now

  287. we see the word apostle. We think of the

  288. twel apostles. We think of the apostle

  289. Paul. Let's think about their ministry

  290. for a moment. What was their role in

  291. that apostolic office? They were

  292. authorized and commissioned by Jesus to

  293. carry his message to the nations to

  294. fulfill his purposes of expanding his

  295. kingdom. That's what an apostle does.

  296. But here Jesus is called an apostle.

  297. Who has authority over Jesus?

  298. No one but the father. Though Jesus is

  299. equal with God, he submits himself to

  300. the plans and the purposes of his

  301. father. And so, uh, when it says that

  302. he's the apostle, what it means is he is

  303. the one that God has authorized to go on

  304. his behalf to fulfill his purposes and

  305. carry his message. That is what Jesus

  306. has done. And what we notice is that

  307. that is exactly what he has done

  308. according to chapter 2. What we have

  309. studied remember it said that God made

  310. him Jesus a little lower than the angels

  311. for what reason? The suffering of death

  312. that he might bring many sons to glory.

  313. And so what that means is if we are holy

  314. brethren and if we are partakers of the

  315. heavenly calling, does that not then

  316. mean that Jesus fulfilled his mission?

  317. That if that was why he was sent, if he

  318. became lower than the angels to suffer

  319. for our sin and to bring us to glory

  320. through his death and resurrection, then

  321. if we are holy brethren, we are

  322. partakers of the heavenly calling,

  323. Christ has done everything the father

  324. sent him to do. He has carried the

  325. message of God. Now that's key because

  326. what do we remember from the first two

  327. verses of this letter that the God who

  328. spoke in past times in a variety of ways

  329. by the mouths of the prophets has spoken

  330. to us in these last days by his son. And

  331. so what that means is that Jesus is the

  332. divinelyapp appointed messenger of God.

  333. He establishes that he's the apostle of

  334. God. He came to fulfill God's purpose

  335. and to carry God's message. So in other

  336. words, he is the mouthpiece of God.

  337. Isn't that what uh the first four verses

  338. of Hebrews told us? That he is the

  339. express image of his person that God has

  340. spoken by his son. And so Jesus is the

  341. apostle. But then it says he's also the

  342. high priest. This was introduced at the

  343. end of chapter 2 when it talks about how

  344. Jesus uh condescended, took on human

  345. flesh, was made lower than the angels

  346. for the suffering of death. It tells us

  347. in verses 17 and 18 that the specific

  348. reason he did that was to make

  349. reconciliation for sins. Make

  350. reconciliation is a word that means to

  351. uh remove the enmity or the hostility

  352. that stands in the way.

  353. your sin stands between you and God.

  354. It's it's just like if somebody does you

  355. wrong and there's friction in your

  356. relationship. It's the same thing

  357. between you and God. Our wrongdoing, our

  358. offenses against him leave enmity and

  359. hostility between us, which is why we

  360. can't enter God's presence. It's why we

  361. can't commune in fellowship with him in

  362. our sin. The high priest must come pay

  363. the price of death, remove our sin, and

  364. thereby become our merciful and faithful

  365. high priest. The one who goes between us

  366. and God on our behalf. That's who Jesus

  367. is. But notice it says that he's the

  368. apostle and high priest of our

  369. profession.

  370. Profession there is not talking about

  371. what you do for a living. This is a word

  372. that means to say the same thing

  373. together. It's got all of that involved.

  374. You might hear how there are confessions

  375. of faith. Our our statement of faith is

  376. another way to say that. If you go on

  377. our website, you look at our statement

  378. of faith. It is initially born from the

  379. New Hampshire Baptist confession of the

  380. 1600s. That confession is a systematized

  381. way of communicating our theology. what

  382. we believe about God and about Jesus

  383. Christ. My mind goes to the lyrics to

  384. the song of the saints. This we believe

  385. that we have a savior, Jesus the Christ

  386. for our sin crucified. Yes, we believe

  387. that on the third morning, God was the

  388. stone for he rose back to life. Forever

  389. he reigns. Let his praise fill the sky.

  390. Glory to God the Father. Glory to Christ

  391. the risen one. All hail the king with

  392. heaven sing hallelujah. Amen. That's a

  393. statement of faith.

  394. He says that Jesus is the apostle

  395. and the high priest of our profession.

  396. He is the object

  397. of our faith. That's what this is

  398. saying. We confess that he is the one

  399. sent from God to pay the price for our

  400. sin to accomplish redemption and send

  401. the message into the far reaches of the

  402. world. That that is who we believe Jesus

  403. is. But what in particular

  404. do we need to consider

  405. about him? Look at verse number two.

  406. Who was faithful to him that appointed

  407. him. Who is that? That's God the Father.

  408. He appointed him the apostle and high

  409. priest of our profession. But notice it

  410. says, "As also Moses was faithful in all

  411. his house." And so initially here, it's

  412. as if the author is placing Jesus and

  413. Moses on the same level in terms of

  414. glory. That's how this initially uh uh

  415. is seen here. And his point is really

  416. understood in in recognizing that he is

  417. quoting from scripture here where it

  418. says that Moses was faithful in all his

  419. house. You know what this takes us back

  420. to? Numbers 12. Do you remember what

  421. happened there? No. Let me remind you.

  422. In Numbers chapter 12, Niriam and Aaron

    Numbers 12 chapter mention

  423. had beef with Moses about his Ethiopian

  424. wife, right? Is that ringing a bell? So,

  425. what did they do? The Bible says they

  426. came and they spoke against him. You

  427. remember what God did? No. Let me remind

  428. you. God called all three of them to the

  429. tabernacle. I don't know about you, that

  430. doesn't sound good. God says, "All

  431. right, we're going to have a meeting.

  432. Let's get you three together. You ever

  433. have done that with your kids? Let's get

  434. you all together. we're going to sit

  435. down and settle this once and for all.

  436. He brings Moses and Miriam and Aaron to

  437. the tabernacle and he he speaks to Aaron

  438. and Miriam and he tells them, "When I

  439. speak to a prophet, I'm going to speak

  440. to them in visions and in dreams."

  441. But then he said, "But my servant Moses

  442. is not." So

  443. with him I will speak mouthto mouth or

  444. face to face as we might say it. With

  445. him I will speak plainly not in dark

  446. speeches.

  447. And he says that how he says he beholds

  448. my similitude my my likeness.

  449. What is that talking about? When God

  450. showed him his glory,

  451. he says, "That's who Moses is.

  452. Moses is not an average man. He's not an

  453. average prophet. He is my servant to

  454. whom I speak plainly, face to face, to

  455. whom I show my glory." That's who Moses

  456. is. And it's in that context that he

  457. says that he refers to Moses as being

  458. faithful in all my house. This is what

  459. it says in Numbers 12:6. Moses is

    Numbers 12:6

  460. faithful. in all my house. So think

  461. about this for a moment. That is set in

  462. the context

  463. when God has spoken to his people by his

  464. servant [clears throat] Moses.

  465. He's spoken to them. What are they

  466. doing? Speaking against him.

  467. Who made you a judge over us? That's

  468. what they said to him. And so what

  469. they're doing is they are rejecting

  470. God's word from the mouth of Moses. Now,

  471. how about that contextual setting when

  472. it's quoted here in Hebrews? Because God

  473. is saying now through this author that

  474. his son is now his mouthpiece. He's no

  475. longer speaking by his servant Moses. He

  476. is speaking by his son Jesus.

  477. And if you do not listen to him, this is

  478. where he's going in this chapter. We're

  479. going to see it uh not next week, but

  480. the week after. He's going there in this

  481. chapter that that the generation in the

  482. wilderness fell because they did not

  483. believe what Moses said and they did not

  484. obey what Moses said. And so in this

  485. context from Numbers 12 when he says

  486. that Jesus is faithful just as Moses was

  487. faithful in all my house, he's warning

  488. them that you need to consider

  489. what he has to say.

  490. You need to listen. You need to heed my

  491. word from my son. Why? He's faithful in

  492. all mine house. And so at this point, it

  493. seems like he's he's putting uh Jesus

  494. and Moses on this same level of glory.

  495. But what we find next is that he's very

  496. quick to uh display that that Jesus

  497. transcends Moses in glory. And he does

  498. so by demonstrating the difference in

  499. their rank. Let's see if we can follow

  500. the logic here. Would you look at verse

  501. number three? He says, "For this man,"

  502. speaking of Jesus,

  503. "was counted worthy of more glory."

  504. Question, who counted him worthy of more

  505. glory?

  506. His father did.

  507. His father did not just say that my son

  508. is on the same level as Moses, but no,

  509. my son is more glorious than Moses. God

  510. counted him more worthy of glory than

  511. Moses. How so?

  512. in as much as he who hath builded the

  513. house hath more honor than the house.

  514. What's going on here is he's stating his

  515. case that Christ is worthy of more glory

  516. than Moses by using the illustration of

  517. building a house. Now, when we are out

  518. canvasing as a church, I've often been

  519. struck by the beauty and the design of

  520. some of these multi-million dollar

  521. houses uh that we come across. Whether

  522. uh we're talking about the materials

  523. that are used, the architectural style

  524. or the rooftop decks and and the the

  525. large walls of picture windows that peer

  526. out at the flat irons. I mean, they're

  527. just beautiful at times. Could you

  528. imagine what it'd be like sitting in one

  529. of those homes eating dinner around the

  530. table looking out seeing the sunset over

  531. the flat irons and just like it is a

  532. beautiful house. But let me ask you,

  533. where does the glory of that house

  534. really belong

  535. to the wood structure

  536. to the stones there as if this house

  537. came into being all by itself?

  538. Or does the glory go to the master

  539. tradesmen who put those stones in place?

  540. Who aligned that framing perfectly plum

  541. and square?

  542. But how about even more glory goes to

  543. the one who had the ingenuity, the

  544. vision, and the mind to draw out these

  545. plans to see this is the way the house

  546. needs to sit so that it looks directly

  547. at those mountains so they can enjoy a

  548. beautiful dinner on their rooftop deck

  549. taking in the glory of the sunset. the

  550. the the real glory belongs to the

  551. architect, the builder of that house.

  552. That is the argument that the author is

  553. making here about the glory of Jesus. He

  554. says that he is worthy of more glory by

  555. this simple fact. Moses

  556. is part of the house,

  557. but Jesus is the builder of the house.

  558. Because what we notice at the end of

  559. verse two, it says Moses was faithful in

  560. all his house. In other words, picture a

  561. house. Moses is in the house. Moses is

  562. of the house. Moses is part of the

  563. house. But Jesus is the one who is the

  564. builder of the house. Therefore, he is

  565. more glorious than the man who is a part

  566. of the house. That's that's his point

  567. here. But then notice the glory of

  568. Christ's deity in verse four. It says,

  569. "For every house is builded by some man,

  570. but he that built all things is God. Who

  571. has been described as the builder?"

  572. The son. Now in verse four, who is

  573. described as the builder? God. You know

  574. what that means? The son is God. Isn't

  575. that what we saw in chapter one? That he

  576. is the express image of God's person

  577. that God made the worlds by him. Is that

  578. not what it said? Look back. I don't

  579. think you believe me. Look back at

  580. chapter one verse uh number three uh

  581. verse number two, excuse me. says, "Hath

  582. of these last days spoken unto us by his

  583. son, whom he hath appointed heir of all

  584. things, by whom also he made the worlds,

  585. who being the brightness of his glory

  586. and the express image of his person, and

  587. upholding all things by the word of his

  588. power." That is who Jesus is. That while

  589. he is the son of God, he also wields all

  590. of the power and divine person of God.

  591. And so Moses is a man

  592. But Jesus is God. And so you can see the

  593. what he's establishing here that while

  594. Jesus was just as faithful as Moses was,

  595. the reality is Moses was faithful in

  596. God's house. He was a part of God's

  597. house. But Jesus is the builder of God's

  598. house. And that makes him more glorious

  599. than Moses.

  600. And so because of who we have become in

  601. Christ, holy brethren, partakers of the

  602. heavenly calling, we need to consider

  603. Jesus worthy of more glory than Moses

  604. because first of all, he's the builder

  605. of God's house. But then we notice

  606. number two that God's son is also the

  607. appointed ruler over God's house. these

  608. these prepositions and adverbial

  609. phrases, these are very key to

  610. understanding his point in these texts.

  611. You'll notice a lot of uh Moses is in

  612. God's house. He's in God's house, but

  613. Jesus is over God's house. There's a

  614. difference between being in something

  615. and being over something. If you are in

  616. an airplane, you're just flying. If you

  617. are flying the airplane, you are over

  618. it. You are the captain. You are in

  619. charge. There's a difference there

  620. between the pilot and a passenger, is

  621. there not? And that's the argument that

  622. he's making here. There's a difference

  623. between a servant

  624. and a son. Let's see it together. Look

  625. at verse number five. It says, "And

  626. Moses verily truly was faithful." Look

  627. at this. In all his house. So there it

  628. is again. Moses is inside of the house

  629. of God. But notice how as a servant.

  630. As a servant. And so Moses is a servant

  631. of God. But I want to point out here

  632. that this particular word translated

  633. servant is not what you would typically

  634. find translated servant, which is a word

  635. that refers to a household slave, which

  636. would be a low status, a low rank in the

  637. household estate of a rich master.

  638. That's the word dulos. That's the most

  639. common word translated servant or slave.

  640. This is a is is the word therapon

  641. which is a servant of nobility,

  642. a servant of high ranking. And so what

  643. he's doing here is he's not diminishing

  644. who Moses is. He's actually raising the

  645. level of Moses's glory. That he was not

  646. a standard slave. He was a ranking

  647. authoritative slave. He was like the

  648. right hand of the master. He was the one

  649. to whom all the other servants in the

  650. household answered to. That's who the

  651. therap was. The duloses, if I can say it

  652. that way, answered to the therap. And so

  653. if you get the picture here, you have

  654. the nation of Israel and the nation as a

  655. whole are the servants

  656. of God. But Moses is my servant as God

  657. calls him. He is the the right-hand man

  658. of God at this point to whom all of

  659. Israel answers. That's his point here.

  660. Moses is a servant. So the question then

  661. is what role is Moses serving here as

  662. the highest ranking servant. Notice that

  663. it says for he's he's been appointed a

  664. servant for this purpose for a testimony

  665. of those things which were to be spoken

  666. after. Notice again that word spoken.

  667. That is one of the most key words in

  668. this entire book because it's all about

  669. how God has spoken to us by his son. And

  670. so he says that Moses came to speak and

  671. to testify of things that would be

  672. spoken after him. What is this referring

  673. to? Deuteronomy 18:1 18 says this. God

    Deuteronomy 18:1

  674. says this to Moses. I will raise them up

  675. a prophet from among their brethren like

  676. unto thee, and will put my words in his

  677. mouth, and he shall speak unto them all

  678. that I shall command him. And it shall

  679. come to pass that whoever will not

  680. hearken unto my words, which he shall

  681. speak in my name, I will require it of

  682. him. You know what God was telling

  683. Moses? I'm going to raise up another man

  684. from the nation of Israel who's going to

  685. serve in a sense like you have. He's

  686. going to be like you. As I have put my

  687. words in your mouth, I'm going to put my

  688. words in his mouth.

  689. And just as if they have not listened to

  690. you, I will require it of them. If they

  691. will not listen to him, I will require

  692. it of them. And so that's what he's

  693. saying. Moses served this role

  694. of pointing them forward to another

  695. prophet who would come, another who

  696. would speak the words of God. This is

  697. speaking of the Lord Jesus Christ is

  698. what the book of Acts would tell us.

  699. That's interpreted to speak of the

  700. prophet, priest, and king Jesus Christ.

  701. And and so those are the words that

  702. Moses pinned that God would raise up a

  703. prophet speaking of his son Jesus. And

  704. so Moses was appointed to serve in God's

  705. house to testify of what Jesus, his son,

  706. would say.

  707. And so that's who Moses is. He is a

  708. servant, a high ranking servant in God's

  709. house. But notice what it says of Christ

  710. in verse six. but Christ

  711. as a son

  712. over his house. You see the difference

  713. there?

  714. The son. This takes us back to chapter

  715. one. We just read a minute ago, so we

  716. don't need to go back, but it speaks of

  717. how God appointed his son the heir of

  718. all things. So in this economy, you have

  719. the rich, wealthy master who owns it

  720. all. He appoints his son to be his heir.

  721. And in that world, the heir for more for

  722. all intents and purposes carries the

  723. full authority and controlling stake

  724. over all that belongs to his father. He

  725. shares like equal control over it

  726. because when his father dies, it's going

  727. to become his. Now, God cannot die. And

  728. so, that's where every illustration with

  729. God falls short because he's infinite.

  730. But the point the author is making here

  731. is that God has already appointed who

  732. his heir is and that is his son. His son

  733. is the heir of all things. Which means

  734. this everything God has belongs to the

  735. son. Everything in the father's house

  736. belongs to the son. And therefore Jesus

  737. is not like Moses in the sense of being

  738. a servant in God's house. He is a son

  739. over God's house.

  740. You know what that means? That Jesus is

  741. not only the builder of God's house, he

  742. is also the God-appointed ruler of God's

  743. house. So then the question is,

  744. what is the house? That's the one

  745. question that hasn't been answered yet

  746. by this text until now. What does it say

  747. there in verse six? Whose house are we?

  748. Whose house are we? Who is the we? Holy

  749. brethren, partakers of the heavenly

  750. calling. That is those who put their

  751. faith and trust in the Lord Jesus

  752. Christ. You become a part of God's

  753. house. In other words, the house that he

  754. is speaking of in this text is not a

  755. building.

  756. It is a group of people.

  757. It is his household of faith. to which

  758. by the way Moses also belonged the

  759. household of faith. See nobody was saved

  760. if we put it that way. Nobody was saved

  761. simply because they were a Jew.

  762. Being a part of Israel did not mean you

  763. were automatically born again. You

  764. shared in the covenant blessings, but

  765. you too had to put your faith in the

  766. redemptive promises and purposes of God

  767. to come in the person of Jesus Christ.

  768. They were saved then the same way that

  769. we are saved now. They looked forward to

  770. the Savior by faith through the

  771. sacrifices that they offered. We look to

  772. the Savior who's already come as

  773. portrayed by the sacrifices that they

  774. offered. That's the difference. The

  775. cross stands in the middle of God's

  776. redemptive timeline. You're either

  777. looking by faith to the cross or you're

  778. looking by faith from the cross. But

  779. either way, we all come to God through

  780. faith in Jesus Christ. And what Hebrews

  781. has told us is when you believe on the

  782. son of God, when you hear his voice,

  783. when you heed his word and trust him by

  784. faith,

  785. he is not ashamed to call you brethren.

  786. Isn't that what we saw in chapter 2 11?

  787. You can check it out yourself. He's not

  788. ashamed to call them brethren. He's he's

  789. bringing many sons to glory. Sons there,

  790. the children of God. That is what Jesus

  791. is doing. And so what he says here is

  792. that you

  793. become a part of God's household

  794. by faith. You belong to that household.

  795. But notice there

  796. the one condition.

  797. What does he say?

  798. If

  799. we hold fast, if we hold fast to the

  800. confidence of and rejoicing of the hope

  801. firm unto the end. The confidence here,

  802. it's a word that means frankness or

  803. outspokenenness.

  804. It would be the opposite of being

  805. ashamed of Christ because that's what's

  806. going on in their lives right now is is

  807. because the persecution they're

  808. experiencing under Christ, they are

  809. becoming ashamed of him. They are

  810. shrinking back and they are turning over

  811. to Moses. Holding fast to the confidence

  812. means I don't care what I'm facing here.

  813. I stand with Jesus openly, publicly,

  814. frankly. I belong to him. And then the

  815. rejoicing there is a word that means to

  816. to boast or to to take pride in. And not

  817. in like a sinful way, but the idea is

  818. this. Like if my wife was up here and I

  819. put my arm around here and said, "This

  820. is my wife

  821. taking pride in her." That's the idea

  822. that it's communicating. I if if firm

  823. unto the end,

  824. you have your arm around Christ and you

  825. say, "He's my savior.

  826. The son is the one to whom I belong. I

  827. am He's not ashamed to call me his

  828. brother. I'm not ashamed to call him my

  829. lord and my savior. That's what he's

  830. talking about here. That if you hold

  831. fast to your confidence and your

  832. rejoicing in the hope, what is the hope?

  833. Being brought to glory through Christ.

  834. That's the hope. And so, do you get what

  835. he's saying here? that if you belong to

  836. God's household,

  837. you are going to persevere in your faith

  838. no matter what to the very end.

  839. The perseverance of the saints is a

  840. biblical doctrine.

  841. Not in the sense that you can ever lose

  842. your salvation,

  843. but in the sense that if your faith was

  844. saving faith in Jesus Christ, that

  845. saving faith will also be keeping faith

  846. to the very end. That you will not lose

  847. your faith in Jesus Christ if you are

  848. genuinely born again. If you genuinely

  849. belong to him, because notice the

  850. language that it says here in this text.

  851. It does not say whose house we can be

  852. if we hold firm to the end. Is that what

  853. it says? Whose house we can be? That as

  854. if it leaves it up in the air like we

  855. don't really know, but if you hang on

  856. until the end, then you you can be. No,

  857. it says whose house are we? That's a

  858. present reality

  859. that if you hold firm to the end, here's

  860. what it proves. You are

  861. right now a member of God's household.

  862. That's what it means. And so then

  863. the what what's going and because this

  864. is where people get tripped up. We're

  865. going to run into this throughout

  866. Hebrews.

  867. The whole point of Hebrews I I just

  868. remember, you know, growing up and and

  869. we would talk to people about salvation

  870. and I remember several people in my my

  871. life saying something like this. Now,

  872. you're so secure in your salvation

  873. that even if you didn't want to be saved

  874. anymore, and even if you walked away

  875. from your faith in Christ, you would

  876. still be saved.

  877. Hebrews

  878. would be very contentious with you in

  879. saying that

  880. because the only assurance that you have

  881. of salvation

  882. is if your faith remains in Christ all

  883. the way to the end.

  884. Because what is he calling them to do?

  885. Consider.

  886. You need to consider something. Why?

  887. Because they are in danger of shrinking

  888. back away from their faith in Christ.

  889. And what he says, you shrink back away

  890. from your faith in Christ and you turn

  891. from your faith in Christ. He's going to

  892. say this later in in chapter six that

  893. for those who have tasted of the

  894. heavenly gift, those who have come so

  895. close, those who have played the role,

  896. those who have taken communion, those

  897. who have been faithful in church, when

  898. they fall away, it's impossible to renew

  899. them again under repentance.

  900. Why? Because it was all right there and

  901. they turned away.

  902. And so, we're going to come across

  903. constant warnings. And I want to make it

  904. crystal clear from the start that what

  905. Hebrews is not teaching is that if you

  906. genuinely got saved and then you lose

  907. your faith later on that that you lost

  908. your salvation. That's not what Hebrews

  909. teaches. Hebrews teaches that those who

  910. who genuinely trusted in Jesus Christ,

  911. those who were genuinely born again,

  912. those who genuinely received the Holy

  913. Spirit, they will remain faithful until

  914. the end. And so he's just calling them

  915. to this fact. If you don't, what

  916. assurance do you have?

  917. And this is in keeping with some of the

  918. things that Jesus said. Let me quote the

  919. verses so that I don't mess them up

  920. here. But in Matthew chapter uh 10:22,

  921. Jesus said this, "And ye shall be hated

  922. of all men for my name's sake.

  923. Follow me and you'll be hated by all."

  924. That's what Jesus told his disciples.

  925. But then he said this, "But he that

  926. endureth to the end

  927. shall be saved." That's what Jesus said.

  928. That if you endure the hatred and the

  929. spite and the rejection of men and you

  930. remain steadfast to my name, you will be

  931. saved. Why? Their faith remains all the

  932. way through. In Matthew chap 24 verse 12

  933. and 13 speaking of the end of of the

  934. days uh the end of this age he says

  935. because iniquity shall abound the love

  936. of many shall wax cold but he that shall

  937. endure unto the end shall be saved. And

  938. so Jesus said this but let's also think

  939. about this for a moment. this because

  940. this is probably something that maybe

  941. has puzzled you over time. When Jesus

  942. talks about the wheat and the tears that

  943. it's a parable that when he returns, he

  944. is going to separate the wheat from the

  945. tears and the tears will be burned up in

  946. the oven. Okay? So, we tears is the the

  947. the the thorns and the thistles. They

  948. all grow in the same field here. And

  949. what Jesus is going to do is he's going

  950. to separate them. And they're all people

  951. in the same field. They're all people in

  952. the same church. But we're going to come

  953. to the end of time when Jesus returns.

  954. And he is going to separate those who

  955. were genuine believers from those who

  956. were nominal believers. They claimed

  957. Christ, but they turned away from their

  958. faith. Or or maybe they were even

  959. claiming Christ to the very end, but

  960. their faith in Jesus was not real real.

  961. And so Jesus is going to do that. He

  962. gives the parable of the the sheep and

  963. goats judgment that sheep and goats

  964. generally are in the same flock, but

  965. they're different. And Jesus says at the

  966. end, I am going to separate them and my

  967. sheep hear my voice, but the goats will

  968. be turned away.

  969. But then also

  970. um Jesus speaks of um how uh there will

  971. be some who come to him and say Lord

  972. Lord but I will say depart from me I

  973. never knew you.

  974. This is what Jesus is talking about is

  975. what the author of Hebrews is saying

  976. here. That there are going to be some

  977. who at one point in their life claimed

  978. and professed faith in Jesus Christ,

  979. but they're not going to endure to the

  980. end. They're going to turn away from

  981. Christ. Whether it's because someone

  982. hurt them, someone betrayed them, or

  983. because of a failure on their part, or a

  984. moral failure. Or it might be that they

  985. come to a place where where they they

  986. just give up on church altogether

  987. because of a hard circumstance in their

  988. lives. Listen, that they're turning away

  989. from Christ doesn't indicate they lost

  990. their salvation. It indicates they never

  991. had it in the first place. Because

  992. that's what John says in 1 John chapter

    1 John 4 chapter mention

  993. 4. When when that that church was

  994. struggling with, well, we have these

  995. people who were stalwarts in our church,

  996. but now they're they're gone. John said

  997. to them, "They went out from us that it

  998. might be manifest that they were not of

  999. us."

1000. Ultimately, in the end, God brings to

1001. light what's in the darkness.

1002. He brings to light whether or not

1003. someone's faith is real. And that is the

1004. idea of tribulation and trials. It

1005. purges us and purifies us in our faith

1006. so that we might know, are we genuinely

  1007. believers? That's where they're at right

  1008. now. They're persecuted. They're weak.

1009. They're feeble in faith. And the author

1010. is saying, "Listen, this is how glorious

1011. Christ is, even compared to someone as

1012. glorious as Moses. And you're you're in

1013. danger of turning away from Christ and

1014. turning back to Moses." But he says, "I

1015. want you to know Jesus is more glorious

1016. than him." And if you needed to heed

1017. what Moses said, how much more do you

1018. need to heed what Jesus said? Because

1019. Moses was God's servant, but Jesus is

1020. God's son. Moses was in God's house, but

1021. Jesus is over God's house. Because he is

1022. more glorious. You need to consider

  1023. his glory. Why?

  1024. How you view Jesus

1025. will determine which direction you go.

1026. It'll determine whether you go to him or

1027. whether you run from him.

1028. And so what this what this text is

1029. getting across is that Christ is worthy

1030. of more glory than Moses because he is

1031. the builder and ruler over God's house.

1032. That is what the point of the text is.

1033. Now here's the question. What difference

1034. does that make in our lives today? What

1035. difference does that make? The fact that

1036. Christ is more glorious than Moses.

1037. Here's the difference that it makes.

1038. Because Christ is more glorious than

  1039. Moses,

  1040. we

1041. should give him glory with our lives.

1042. Because God has given him the glory.

1043. Because God has counted him more

1044. glorious. We too must count him more

1045. glorious. Therefore, we must give him

1046. glory with our lives. Now, here's the

1047. question, and we're almost done here.

1048. How do we glorify the son as God has

1049. glorified him? I think the call of the

1050. text is pretty clear and it's really

1051. twofold. Number one, you glorify him

1052. with your faith. You glorify him with

  1053. your faith.

1054. First of all, the call is to trust Jesus

1055. Christ as your personal savior.

1056. The call is to see him as the apostle

1057. and high priest of the Christian faith,

1058. the divine messenger of God, the divine

1059. priest of God who reconciles us back to

1060. God. It starts with putting your faith

1061. in Jesus Christ. And if you have not yet

1062. done so, I would encourage you to

1063. tonight. There's no greater way to give

1064. glory to Christ that belongs to him than

1065. accepting his payment for your sin on

  1066. the cross.

1067. But then number two, if you are saved,

1068. if you are a believer in Jesus Christ,

1069. then how you give glory to God, to Jesus

1070. is by continuing to stand fast in your

1071. faith no matter what you face in life.

  1072. It's when you It's when you're linking

1073. arms with Jesus and you're saying, "Even

1074. through the medical crisis I'm dealing

1075. with right now, even through the

1076. financial stress, even through through

1077. the direct persecution that I'm facing

1078. in my life, he's my Savior. He's my

1079. Lord. He's my King. I'm not going

1080. anywhere from him. I'm holding fast to

1081. him." You know what that shows to others

1082. when they see you holding fast to Christ

1083. in a challenging time in your life? That

1084. he's also worthy for me to trust in him

1085. and to hold fast to him no matter what I

  1086. face in my life.

1087. My mind goes back to a young lady that

1088. was a student at Heartland. I believe

1089. that she was friends with Ivonne uh and

1090. his circle of friends. Her name is Dalia

1091. Johnson. But she was young, young young

  1092. lady, 19-year-old girl, student at H

  1093. Heartland Baptist Bible College,

1094. training for ministry, diagnosed with a

1095. severe case of cancer that took her life

1096. in just a matter of a few months. I

1097. mean, just just tragic thing. But I

1098. remember I had no idea who she was, but

1099. I remember following her journey on

1100. Facebook and she through all the pain,

1101. she always had a smile. She always gave

1102. glory to God. She depended and trusted

1103. and spoke of his sustaining grace

1104. through that deep trial in her life. And

1105. I guarantee you that there were many

1106. other people who as a result of that

1107. looked at her story and said, "I'm not

1108. going through anything close to what

1109. she's going through. And if she can

1110. trust him, if she can hold fast to her

  1111. faith, then why can't I?"

1112. You can be that kind of testimony to

1113. others who are going through the ringer.

1114. So I want I want to challenge and

1115. encourage you. whatever you might be

1116. going through, the best way you can give

1117. glory to God and to Jesus Christ is by

1118. continuing to hold fast to him no matter

1119. what you are facing. And so, number one,

1120. you give glory to God or glory to Christ

1121. through your faith. But then number two,

1122. you give glory to Christ through your

  1123. obedience.

1124. Through your obedience. Once again,

1125. think of that context of Numbers chapter

    Numbers 12 chapter mention

  1126. 12.

1127. God was telling Miriam and Aaron,

1128. "My servant Moses is faithful in all my

1129. house. I speak to him face to face. I

1130. put my words in his mouth. He's seen my

  1131. glory."

1132. Moses is glorious. Why was he telling

1133. him that? Well, he asked them a

1134. question. Why were you not afraid to

  1135. speak against him?

1136. You know, he's calling them to

1137. submission and obedience to his

  1138. authority.

1139. And if God is using that example here,

1140. the Holy Spirit is using that example to

  1141. speak of Jesus,

1142. then doesn't that mean that the son of

1143. God is worthy of more obedience than the

1144. servant of God? Isn't the one who is

1145. over the house more worthy of obedience

1146. than the one who is in the house?

1147. We give glory to Christ by conforming

1148. our lives to his word and his

1149. commandments. by giving heed to what he

1150. says and who he is.

1151. Because when when people some people may

1152. see you as a radical, they may see you

1153. as being too harsh, too strict in your

1154. stances. They may hear a message like on

1155. Sunday from Daniel when we talked about

1156. not defiling yourself like it's just

1157. food. I mean, what's the big deal here?

1158. You you might experience some of that.

1159. But here's the reality. Your obedience

1160. to Christ demonstrates to others that

1161. he's so glorious to you, that he's

1162. worthy of even radical changes in your

  1163. life.

1164. That he's so good and he's done so much

1165. for you, that he's worthy of your full

  1166. submission.

1167. That you would not only confess your

1168. faith in him as savior, but that you

1169. would confess your submission to him as

  1170. Lord. As Lord.

1171. He is the son God appointed over his

1172. house. It means that as a church,

1173. everyone who lives in the house answers

  1174. to him.

1175. Every brother and sister in Christ,

1176. we as a church as a whole answer to the

1177. son of God. Why? God made him the

1178. builder and the ruler over his entire

  1179. household. Colossians chapter 1 verse 18

    Colossians 1:18

1180. says this of Jesus, "And He is the head

1181. of the body, the church. Who is the

1182. beginning? The firstborn from the dead,

1183. that in all things he might have the

  1184. preeeminence.

  1185. Preeminence means first rank.

1186. Isn't that who the author of Hebrews

1187. says God counted Jesus to be supreme in

1188. rank? And so if we're going to give

1189. glory to him that God has given to him,

1190. number one, We need to give him our

  1191. faith in salvation

1192. and in every circumstance of life. But

1193. then also if we're going to give glory

1194. to him that God has given to him, then

1195. we need to bring our life into full

1196. obedience and submission to him.

1197. He's more glorious as the son of God

1198. than the servants of God was. And

1199. therefore, he's worthy that we would

1200. glorify him with our lives. So let's do

1201. just that. Give him our faith. Give him

1202. our obedience. And shine his glory to

1203. the world that needs him. Let's pray.

1204. Heavenly Father, I thank you for the

1205. time in your word. And I thank you for

1206. displaying for us tonight the greatness

1207. of Christ's glory and his majesty.

1208. And I pray that you would help us to

1209. really take this message to heart, to

1210. see him worthy of more glory, not just

1211. than Moses, [music] but than everything

1212. else. In the Jewish perspective here,

1213. Moses was the right-hand man of God.

1214. There was no one above [music] him until

1215. Christ came and we saw him in all of his

1216. [music] glory. And so now that we know

  1217. and consider

1218. Christ more glorious than all, would you

1219. help us to give him our faith and our

1220. obedience? In Jesus name I pray. Amen.

1221. Let's give a few moments here to respond

1222. to what we've heard tonight. I encourage

1223. you to just lay your heart down and

1224. [music] surrender both in faith and in

  1225. obedience to Christ.

  1226. >> [music]

  1227. [music]

1228. >> Heavenly Father, we want to thank you

1229. again for the time together. Thank you

1230. for your word, for its precious truth. I

1231. pray that you would send us with your

1232. strength and your grace and the renewal

1233. of your word and of your spirit that we

1234. might give glory to Christ in every area

1235. of our lives. I pray that you'd bring us

1236. back on Sunday refreshed and ready to

1237. worship you and to seek your face

1238. together. We ask these things in [music]

  1239. Jesus name. Dave.
