  1. In the beginning, the spirit moved.

  2. He moved with power. Power over the

  3. darkness.

  4. Power over the deep.

  5. Power that speaks.

  6. And chaos obeys.

  7. Fire from heaven. Tongues of fire. Gifts

  8. of power falling in the upper room. Not

  9. just on the leaders,

  10. but on every heart. It lit the church

  11. ablaze.

  12. He rushed in like a mighty wind. Wind

  13. that shatters silence. Wind that breaks

  14. chains. Wind that fills lungs. Wind that

  15. wakes the sleeping soul.

  16. The same spirit

  17. lives in us.

  18. That same fire,

  19. that same wind,

  20. and the same gift.

  21. [music]

  22. [singing]

  23. Wind that breaks [music] chase. Wind

  24. that feels lost. Wind that breaks love.

  25. Sleeping [music]

  26. soul

  27. that breaks.

  28. Wind that

  29. breaks down.

  30. >> Wind that feels

  31. wind.

  32. >> Given to build,

  33. given to serve,

  34. given to speak,

  35. given to heal.

  36. So stir it [music] up. Stir the fire.

  37. Stir the gift.

  38. Open your mouth

  39. and let his power flow.

  40. >> Winds.

  41. >> Hey, I'm Jeremiah. This is Maddie. This

  42. is Banks. This is Wyatt. And this is our

  43. story.

  44. >> I've been a part of Elevation for 24

  45. years. [music] And Maddie's been a part

  46. of Elevation for 15 years.

  47. >> A couple years [music] into being

  48. married, we wanted to start a family.

  49. And for most people, that's quite

  50. simple. But little did we know the

  51. complicated journey that we were going

  52. to be on to start that. We were told

  53. that most likely wouldn't happen on our

  54. own, and we would need to do IVF and go

  55. down that path. But in that [music] same

  56. appointment, it was exactly 2 weeks

  57. later, we found out we were pregnant.

  58. Not only with one baby, but two.

  59. >> With two.

  60. And after the journey that we had been

  61. on, we just felt like, wo, like life

  62. could not be any better. We had a 24-w

  63. week scan and that's sort of when the

  64. story started to fall apart. So we get

  65. to the hospital, they do some more

  66. checks. You could, you know, give birth

  67. at any time and if you're still pregnant

  68. on Monday, like we'll talk about it.

  69. From there, I was just told I was not

  70. going to be leaving that hospital until

  71. the babies came out. By the end of the

  72. second week, things were not looking so

  73. good. By that same time, the next day,

  74. the twins were born. As we're having

  75. cuddles, a doctor comes in and he's

  76. like, "Oh, we're gonna have to have a

  77. family meeting later." Instantly, we

  78. just knew that something wasn't right.

  79. They both had a brain scan. Whites

  80. [music] presented normal. And then they

  81. said, "But Banks came back with some um

  82. complications and the doctors explained

  83. to us that that meant was that we didn't

  84. know what her future was going to hold."

  85. They then gave us the option that we can

  86. either like keep her alive and to see

  87. how she goes or basically we could turn

  88. off her life support.

  89. Straight away we were like, "No, we're

  90. fighting through this. We're trusting

  91. God through it all." I was saying to

  92. God, "God, she's your daughter.

  93. If she's going to be healed and healthy,

  94. you can take her [music] up to heaven,

  95. but if you know, you'll grace us with

  96. her on earth. We know that she's going

  97. to be 100% healed and 100% okay." We

  98. started to write the declarations on the

  99. wall.

  100. We got lock in and he did some worship

  101. and [music] sung over the kids. We got

  102. Isaac Lenton in and he prayed for the

  103. kids.

  104. >> Basically, when she had her brain bleed,

  105. she ended up developing um a condition

  106. where her brain was filling up with

  107. fluid and it wasn't draining on its own.

  108. Every day we just prayed that that fluid

  109. would start to drain on its own and her

  110. brain would

  111. >> work the way that God originally

  112. designed it to

  113. >> and she ended up having three of these

  114. needles and after the third one instead

  115. of her head circumference growing quite

  116. quickly um it actually shrunk and her

  117. brain is doing exactly what it's

  118. supposed to do. We were 5 days out from

  119. her coming home. We knew something

  120. wasn't right with her. She just wasn't

  121. breathing properly and things just

  122. weren't good. And then overnight we got

  123. a phone call saying that her breathing

  124. wasn't getting any better and they

  125. weren't really sure what was going on.

  126. 4:00 a.m. we get another phone call and

  127. they've told us that Banks has gone back

  128. to NICU and there's a surgeon in there

  129. standing over her assessing her whether

  130. she needs emergency surgery.

  131. >> She was not looking good to be honest.

  132. How could she go from off everything to

  133. now being back right back to the

  134. beginning? Actually even worse than when

  135. she first went there. I sat with her for

  136. the hour and just kept declaring all

  137. these scriptures and praying.

  138. And at this time, they hadn't put her

  139. medication back on yet to help with her

  140. blood sugars. And pretty much over the

  141. next week, her blood sugars stabilized.

  142. And then it was crazy to see like our

  143. original prayer of her to come home

  144. without medication happened. And what

  145. felt like the worst thing in the world,

  146. now we look back and think, God, it was

  147. actually such a blessing. Banks' story

  148. like I think a lot of the time we think

  149. of miracles [music] as like happening

  150. like you pray they're healed and it

  151. happens straight away but her healing

  152. has been over time allowed us to heal as

  153. well to see God's promises continually

  154. happening and this was over like a

  155. course of a year we ended up going to

  156. one of their milestone appointments and

  157. the same doctor who had to deliver the

  158. information about [music] her brain

  159. bleeds um did this assessment with us at

  160. the end of the appointment I said so

  161. [music] where are we at like is she

  162. showing signs of disability she showing

  163. signs of cereable pausy and the same

  164. doctor confirmed to my face that there

  165. are zero signs.

  166. >> And it was just such a

  167. surreal like full circle moment to

  168. have these two like polar opposite

  169. conversations. And for me on this

  170. journey, I feel like I learned that you

  171. can pray [music] those crazy audacious

  172. prayers that God will come through, that

  173. he is trustworthy and his promises will

  174. always stand.

  175. >> Is that the first time you seen last

  176. year?

  177. >> Yeah, I'd say so.

  178. >> Come watch this video.

  179. >> Do you have a story to tell?

  180. >> Sure.

  181. Do you want to say that you're having a

  182. baby?

  183. >> Having a baby brother?

  184. >> You excited?

  185. >> Yeah.

  186. >> Come on. Praise God.

  187. [applause]

  188. Not sure how you're supposed to preach

  189. after that.

  190. It's okay to admit, man, it was uh lots

  191. of sinuses in this room. heard people uh

  192. sniffing how good's our God

  193. and as you could have told we are

  194. stepping into a uh a new series called

  195. Powerhouse. If we've not had the

  196. opportunity to meet yet my name is Luke

  197. and get the privilege of being one of

  198. the associate pastors here and just get

  199. the privilege of serving this beautiful

  200. community. Uh we're just ordinary people

  201. that love an extraordinary God. And if

  202. you don't have a place to call home, if

  203. you don't have a local church where you

  204. go to weekly, could I encourage you to

  205. find one? Uh we think this one's pretty

  206. good uh because the people are pretty

  207. good and we serve an extraordinary God

  208. and we think uh we love him and uh we

  209. love the people in this house. And so

  210. I'd encourage you find a local church.

  211. The reason I bring that up is um when we

  212. do these series, this is not a once-off

  213. message. We actually build week upon

  214. week and so consistency matters. I

  215. encourage you be in church, be there

  216. consistently. Um every week we are going

  217. to step into a new topic. And so I get

  218. the privilege of sort of setting a

  219. foundation, a platform from where we can

  220. launch on for the next few weeks.

  221. The series as we've done every October,

  222. November will not just be on the power

  223. and the presence of the Holy Spirit, but

  224. ultimately how we can increase our faith

  225. this year for the miraculous.

  226. And so my aim therefore is to create

  227. this foundation for the rest of the

  228. series,

  229. helping us increase

  230. in the faith for the miraculous. But

  231. before we go on, I want to address a few

  232. things. Before we step through the

  233. scriptures, I want to highlight a few

  234. things.

  235. The first thing I want to highlight is

  236. within this series, what we're not going

  237. to be able to cover is everything when

  238. it comes down to the sovereignty of God.

  239. There's a reality that no one truly can

  240. understand

  241. why we see some miracles and why we

  242. don't see others. Why some prayers go

  243. answered and why others don't.

  244. And so I'm mindful as you sit in this

  245. room and even online that there will be

  246. people in this room that are sitting in

  247. the pain and the hurt of unanswered

  248. prayer.

  249. That they have not had their miracle

  250. yet.

  251. That they still carry the confusion and

  252. the pain of that that they believed so

  253. dearly in their heart for.

  254. And friend, my only consolation is this

  255. is that we serve a God that is sovereign

  256. and just.

  257. And we've got to find an understanding

  258. in the fact that his ways are above our

  259. ways. So much so Isaiah 55:8-9 tells us

    Isaiah 55:8–9

  260. that. Says, "For my thoughts are not

  261. your thoughts, and neither are your ways

  262. my ways, declares the Lord. For as the

  263. heavens are higher than the earth, so

  264. are my ways higher than your ways, and

  265. my thoughts than your thoughts." But my

  266. pastoral heart is this, that it doesn't

  267. diminish

  268. or or or sort of make you feel like

  269. what's happened to you in the past or

  270. the fact that you've not seen your

  271. miracle. I'm not trying to diminish any

  272. of that. But what I am trying to say is

  273. that no matter how you've landed in the

  274. service today, that God can and still

  275. wants to through the power of the Holy

  276. Spirit see the miraculous happening and

  277. through your life.

  278. The second thing I want to raise before

  279. we continue is this. I'm mindful that

  280. many of you would be would you would you

  281. you would see the uh Gez, that was a

  282. tongue twister. [laughter]

  283. I'm mindful that many of you would have

  284. seen the powerhouse series coming up.

  285. And if you've got to be honest with

  286. yourself, you've got a lens of

  287. skepticism as you enter the room.

  288. Because many of us will say, Luke, well,

  289. I believe the Bible.

  290. So, I believe that Jesus performed

  291. miracles. Luke, I'd even concede the

  292. fact that I believe the fact that the

  293. apostles perform miracles through the

  294. power of the Holy Spirit. I'll concede

  295. that, Luke. But beyond that, I'm not

  296. sure if he still wants to do that.

  297. Well, church history time and time again

  298. tells us that he is able and willing.

  299. 400 years after the death and

  300. resurrection of Christ Jesus, we see

  301. that St. Augustine says this of

  302. miracles.

  303. So this is the fifth century says this

  304. of miracles which they of miracles which

  305. were wrought that the world might

  306. believe in Christ. Now listen miracles

  307. that have not seized since the world

  308. believed that have not seized.

  309. The 13th century St. Thomas Aquinus

  310. reports of a woman being healed of

  311. hemorrhage. This is in Bible in church

  312. history time and time again during the

  313. great awakening of the year 1743. There

  314. was a lady by the name of Hannah Wheeler

  315. who was bedridden with a trophied

  316. muscles, couldn't get up, needed

  317. assistance to do everything, listened to

  318. a message in her house, and she reports

  319. the fact that through the power of the

  320. Holy Spirit, started to feel her body

  321. shake, stood up out of bed, and was

  322. completely healed.

  323. Time and time again, we see it.

  324. 2022 October,

  325. the 12th of October,

  326. a 5-day old boy lied in Westme Hospital.

  327. Doctors walking into the room telling

  328. his parents, "Hey, you better get

  329. ready."

  330. Get ready for what? Get ready for the

  331. worst. Because your son's 5 days old and

  332. we don't know how to treat a 5-day old

  333. baby. We don't know what's wrong. We

  334. just know he's dying. So, get ready for

  335. the worst.

  336. 12 hours later,

  337. that father and his baby would walk out

  338. of the doors of Westmeat, confusing

  339. doctors and himself alike.

  340. Within 12 hours, I sat in that hospital

  341. room. And I watched doctors take off

  342. heart monitors, and I'm going, "Why

  343. don't take that off?" Like, we're not

  344. done.

  345. And it started to confuse doctors

  346. because they kept taking off heart

  347. monitors cuz he no longer used it. that

  348. that that boy who was told he was going

  349. to die now runs through these foyers and

  350. through these classrooms

  351. through the miraculous power. So it's

  352. hard for you to convince me

  353. as I watched my son go from death to

  354. life in the space of 12 hours that God

  355. isn't able or willing to perform

  356. miracles.

  357. And so my goal today is simply this. Is

  358. to help you increase your faith and your

  359. understanding

  360. that you are loved and the presence of

  361. the Holy Spirit is here

  362. and we can see the miraculous happen in

  363. and through our lives. So we're going to

  364. pray and we're going to jump into some

  365. scripture

  366. and then we're going to get into it.

  367. Amen.

  368. >> We good?

  369. >> Buckled up. I'm ready to preach. I'm

  370. only preaching two services today. So,

  371. I'm leaving the I'm leaving it all here.

  372. Whether you're coming or not, I'm going.

  373. So, here we go. Jesus, we just thank

  374. you, Lord, for the privilege and honor

  375. it is to come around your word. I pray,

  376. Lord, that we would never grow familiar

  377. with your presence, but rather that

  378. you'd call out to us, Lord. Help us

  379. understand what it is you're calling us

  380. to even right now in this moment. Lord,

  381. where people need a miracle, Holy

  382. Spirit, I pray where they sitting right

  383. now that power in the name of Jesus

  384. would flow through these pews

  385. that we'll see testimony upon testimony

  386. of healing and restoration and chains

  387. being broken and addictions being

  388. broken. In the name of Jesus,

  389. we believe

  390. that you are able and willing

  391. to do the miraculous.

  392. So, we thank you, Jesus. And all God's

  393. people said, "Amen." What I want to do

  394. over the next few minutes we've got to

  395. get together is simply do this. I want

  396. to read you an account within the Bible

  397. across two gospels. And I want to

  398. highlight two things for you. two things

  399. that I've identified that prevents

  400. people from stepping into all that God's

  401. calling them to when it comes to the

  402. power of the Holy Spirit and the

  403. miraculous. And the second thing I want

  404. to do is then give you three keys, tools

  405. that you can take into your day-to-day

  406. life about how we can confidently then

  407. step into the miraculous. So, if you've

  408. got your Bible with you, would you open

  409. with me to Mark 9 vers 14? We're going

  410. to read a bit of scripture if that's

  411. okay.

  412. It's where I feel comfortable.

  413. To be honest, I'll just stand up here

  414. and just read scripture all day long.

  415. But

  416. thank you, baby.

  417. All right, here we are. Mark 9 vers 14

  418. says this. And when they came to the

  419. disciples, they saw a great crowd around

  420. them and scribes arguing with them. And

  421. immediately all the crowd when they saw

  422. him were greatly amazed and ran up to

  423. him and greeted him. And he asked them,

  424. "What are you arguing with them?" And

  425. someone from the crowd answered,

  426. "Teacher, I brought my son to you, for

  427. he has a spirit that makes him mute, and

  428. whenever it seizes him, it throws him

  429. down, and he foams and grinds his teeth

  430. and becomes rigid." So I asked your

  431. disciples to cast it out, and they were

  432. not able. That's important to note. And

  433. he answered them, "Oh faithless

  434. generation, how long am I to be with

  435. you? How long am I to bear with you?

  436. Bring him to me. And they brought the

  437. boy to him. And when the spirit saw him,

  438. immediately it convulsed the boy and he

  439. fell on the ground and rolled about.

  440. There is power in the name and the

  441. presence of Christ. Friends, remember

  442. that. And Jesus asked his father, "How

  443. long has this been happening to him?"

  444. And he said, "From childhood." And he

  445. has often cast him into fire and into

  446. water to destroy him. But if you can do

  447. anything, have compassion on us and help

  448. us. And Jesus said, this is important.

  449. If you can, all things are possible for

  450. one who believes. And immediately the

  451. father of the child cried out and said,

  452. 'I believe, Lord, but help my unbelief.

  453. Man, that's powerful. And when Jesus saw

  454. that, a crowd came running together. He

  455. rebuked the unclean spirit, saying, "You

  456. mute and deaf spirit, I command you.

  457. Come out of him and never enter him

  458. again." And after crying out and

  459. convulsing him terribly, it came out.

  460. And the boy was like a corpse, so that

  461. most of them said, "He is dead." But

  462. Jesus, took him by the hand, and lifted

  463. him up, and he rose. And when he had

  464. entered the house, his disciples asked

  465. him privately, "Why could we not cast it

  466. out?" And he said to him, "This kind

  467. cannot be driven out by anything but

  468. prayer." There's a parallel verse or or

  469. scripture that we see in Luke, so excuse

  470. me, in Matthew 17.

  471. where Mark's traditionally writing to

  472. the Gentiles, Matthew typically is is

  473. noted in writing to the Jewish culture.

  474. And so Matthew highlights something

  475. slightly different that that Jesus says

  476. as well in Matthew 17:14-21.

    Matthew 17:14–21

  477. It says this, then the disciples came to

  478. Jesus about the same account and story.

  479. Then the disciples came to Jesus and

  480. said, why could we not cast it out? And

  481. he said to them, "Because of your little

  482. faith. For truly I say to you, if you

  483. have faith like a grain of mustard seed,

  484. you will say to this mountain, move from

  485. here to there, and it will move, and

  486. nothing will be impossible for you." Two

  487. things that I'd love to highlight and

  488. address that I see within scripture that

  489. prevents us from seeing the miraculous

  490. in our life. Here's the first one. You

  491. could have guessed it. It's unbelief. If

  492. ever there was a statement that

  493. highlighted and summarized human faculty

  494. and you human nature, it's this. I

  495. believe,

  496. but help my unbelief.

  497. I believe,

  498. but help my unbelief, Lord.

  499. Lord, I've heard about the miracles.

  500. I've seen the miracles with my own eyes.

  501. I watched the testimony videos. I heard

  502. the funny pastor with a mustache tell me

  503. his story. I've heard it all, Lord. So,

  504. I believe, but help my unbelief.

  505. You see, the enemy's goal is not to try

  506. and

  507. encourage you to believe that miracles

  508. don't happen. He knows he doesn't have

  509. power there because it's written.

  510. His

  511. goal is to make you think that you're

  512. not worthy enough of receiving it and

  513. that he won't do it for you.

  514. And so unbelief is rooted in doubt

  515. that makes us think not that Jesus is

  516. enabled, but makes us think that he's

  517. not willing to do it for us.

  518. I'm here to remind you friends that

  519. there's no way that you can earn the

  520. love and the grace of Christ Jesus.

  521. Romans 8:38 tells us that that nothing

    Romans 8:38

  522. separates us from the love of Christ.

  523. For I am sure that neither death nor

  524. life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things

  525. presence, nor things to come, nor

  526. powers, nor height, nor depth, nor

  527. anything else in all creation will be

  528. able to separate us from the love of God

  529. in Christ Jesus. You are as loved as you

  530. will ever be. And here's the good thing

  531. for us. Our God is no respector of man.

  532. If he's done it before, he can do it

  533. again.

  534. Yes. The second thing that I see that I

  535. notice that prevents people when it

  536. comes to seeing the Holy Spirit work for

  537. us, it's this.

  538. We read in Matthew that Jesus says, "If

  539. you have faith the size of a mustard

  540. seed that you could say to the mountain,

  541. move."

  542. The problem with this verse is so often

  543. it's misinterpreted

  544. and we think the onus of faith

  545. is on us.

  546. Maybe not you, but I know growing up I

  547. was like, Lord, I'm pretty sure I've got

  548. that like that amount of faith.

  549. But then it started working up against

  550. me because I was like, Lord, I've been

  551. praying like I'm pretty sure I have a

  552. little bit amount of faith. Like why am

  553. I not seeing the miracle? Lord,

  554. why am I not seeing it for my life?

  555. Lord, you said all I need is faith this

  556. big. Almost fell off the stage

  557. so passionate. I wanted to sit with you

  558. guys. I need faith this small.

  559. And I said, Lord, why is it not

  560. happening to me? And the problem is when

  561. we don't read and study our Bible is

  562. that we miss contextually what's

  563. happening.

  564. Because it's not about the measure of

  565. faith, it's about the object of faith.

  566. It's saying that no matter how big your

  567. faith is, even faith this small directed

  568. towards Christ will move mountains. And

  569. so we can't earn or change or increase

  570. his willingness by believing more. We

  571. just got to take what we have and direct

  572. it towards him. And so it's not about

  573. the measure of faith we have. It's about

  574. the object of our faith. And so my

  575. question to you to you today is

  576. what's the object of your faith? two

  577. things that I see preventing us from

  578. stepping into all that God has when it

  579. comes to the power of the Holy Spirit

  580. and seeing the miraculous. So now let me

  581. give you three things that we can do

  582. about it.

  583. Simple things to say. I say this often.

  584. Not always simple to do. Here we go.

  585. Here's the first one.

  586. We've got to ask.

  587. Matthew 7 7-11 says this. Ask and it

  588. will be given to you. Seek and you will

  589. find. Knock and it will be open to you.

  590. For everyone who asks receives, and the

  591. one who seeks finds, and to the one who

  592. knocks, it will be opened. Or which of

  593. you, if his son asks him for bread, will

  594. give him a stone? Or if he asks him for

  595. a fish, will give him a serpent? If you

  596. then, who are evil, know how to give

  597. good gifts to your children, how much

  598. more will your father, who is in heaven,

  599. give good gifts to those who are asking.

  600. There's a parallel verse of this in Luke

    Luke 11:9–13

  601. 11:9-13

  602. where Luke specifically focus on the

  603. gift of the Holy Spirit and the power of

  604. the Holy Spirit that's on access to us.

  605. So it's there that we and we can ask the

  606. problem again when we read scripture

  607. just at face value in the English

  608. language is we lose power contextual

  609. power because in the Greek we actually

  610. call this ask knock and seek. We call it

  611. the uh present imperative tense which

  612. means that it's not just ask, knock and

  613. seek. It's actually an ongoing

  614. action. So it's not ask, stop, seek,

  615. stop, knock, stop. It's keep asking,

  616. keep knocking, keep seeking, keep

  617. asking, keep knocking, keep seeking.

  618. It's not asking when I don't see, stop.

  619. And so you think about the father that's

  620. brought his son to Jesus.

  621. He's embodied this because the Bible

  622. says that his child has had it for a

  623. long period of time

  624. and he's probably tried everything he

  625. could.

  626. Then he hears about the disciples that

  627. are coming

  628. and he goes, "I'm going to ask again."

  629. Goes to the disciples, the Bible says

  630. that they couldn't they couldn't see the

  631. miracle app in that moment. I don't know

  632. about you, but I would slightly feel

  633. discouraged like Lord, I I went to your

  634. people and they couldn't perform it.

  635. But he doesn't ask stop. He doesn't

  636. knock stop. He doesn't seek stop. He

  637. keeps asking and keep knocking. And

  638. that's when he finds himself at the feet

  639. of Christ and saying, "Lord, I need I

  640. need help." He says to the Lord, I

  641. believe, but help my unbelief.

  642. In asking Jesus, he understood his

  643. inadequacy.

  644. Would you have compassion on my

  645. unbelief, Lord?

  646. Lord, I need help, but help my unbelief.

  647. I need I need help, but I need help from

  648. the place of doubt. I need help and

  649. compassion from my place of unbelief.

  650. Which leads us to the second point,

  651. which is guess what? Believe.

  652. So, we ask and then we believe.

  653. Lord, I believe, but help my unbelief.

  654. Lord, that I've heard you've done it

  655. before. I've seen you do it before, but

  656. would you help my unbelief for me, Lord?

  657. Will it do it for me?

  658. Will he do it for me? Is the question

  659. that we plague ourselves with daily.

  660. You see, the issue with unbelief is that

  661. it's rooted in distrust and skepticism.

  662. And if I going to be honest, if we're

  663. all going to be vulnerable, many time

  664. unbelief is rooted in past hurt and

  665. pain. And so we tell ourselves

  666. that I've not seen it before. So I can't

  667. afford to have hope

  668. because I'm worried that if I hope one

  669. more time, I'll get hurt one more time.

  670. Unbelief is built in and rooted in

  671. distrust and skepticism of what he's

  672. able to do and his willingness to do it

  673. for you.

  674. Mark 9:23 says, "If you can, all things

    Mark 9:23

  675. are possible for one who believes."

  676. There's a statement. We need to ask

  677. Jesus to increase our faith in order to

  678. continue to believe for miracles in our

  679. lives, in our world, even when we've not

  680. seen it before.

  681. So, we ask,

  682. then we believe.

  683. Sounds kind of simple. Here's

  684. the third one.

  685. And this is where it matters. We

  686. contend.

  687. We need to contend for miracles. We ask

  688. for miracles. We believe for miracles.

  689. And then we contend for miracles. That

  690. sounds cool, Luke. But how

  691. how do I contend?

  692. Mark 9:28-29 says this. And when he had

    Mark 9:28–29

  693. entered the house, his disciples asked

  694. him privately, "Lord, why could we not

  695. cast it out and he said to them, "This

  696. kind cannot be driven out by anything

  697. but by but by prayer."

  698. You see, contending for the miraculous

  699. actually starts with submission in

  700. prayer.

  701. See, prayer brings you into alignment

  702. with the perfect will of God. Being in

  703. the will of God then ultimately helps

  704. you understand what prayers to pray, how

  705. to pray.

  706. We're called to contend for miracles,

  707. not just allowing the world to happen to

  708. us. Imagine that father just went, "I

  709. guess this is my lot."

  710. You know the thing I didn't mention

  711. about those 12 hours.

  712. They were probably the felt like the

  713. most longest 12 hours of my life.

  714. It was just after co

  715. no visitors allowed. One parent in a

  716. room

  717. with the beeping of a heart monitor

  718. being the cadence to every breath I

  719. took.

  720. Just sitting there alone, I had two

  721. choices.

  722. Could have sat and allowed the world to

  723. happen to my son

  724. or I could have contended.

  725. It's all I did.

  726. I prayed the most simple prayers I could

  727. fathom up and must up.

  728. It was the moment I've never been as

  729. brave as I could.

  730. Took all the faith I had, every ounce of

  731. energy and strength just to pray a

  732. prayer of boldness.

  733. Not your will, but not my will, but

  734. yours, Lord, but I'll contend until I

  735. see it happen.

  736. See, prayer also doesn't just stir up

  737. the power of God. It brings us closer to

  738. the one that has the power.

  739. Brings us into the will of God. And

  740. Awtoer,

  741. I love this quote by him, says this.

  742. Says, I believe in the kind of miracles

  743. that God gives to his people who live so

  744. close to him that answers to prayer are

  745. common.

  746. And these miracles are uncommon.

  747. So my question to us all is

  748. when lost, were you willing to ask,

  749. believe, and contend for the miraculous

  750. in your life?

  751. The thing that I find that prevents us

  752. is because we think we own the outcome

  753. of the prayer.

  754. Here's a bit of insight into a pastor.

  755. Uh we also get nervous praying prayers

  756. when you come up to us.

  757. I've just had to learn to deal with it.

  758. I remember a couple of years somebody

  759. came up to me and said the simple line

  760. to me and it changed the way I I

  761. approached praying and it changed the

  762. way that I approached the miraculous. He

  763. simply said, Luke, you don't you don't

  764. give yourself the credit when you see

  765. the miraculous.

  766. So why would you give yourself the

  767. credit for the unanswered prayer?

  768. And I wonder if we if we entered prayer

  769. for the miraculous with the heart that

  770. whatever the outcome might be, we don't

  771. own it.

  772. If we would have the boldness to contend

  773. more than we do.

  774. You see, we need to have the confidence

  775. that this is what God's called us to.

  776. Acts 1:8 says, "But you will receive

    Acts 1:8

  777. power when the Holy Spirit comes upon

  778. you." Power.

  779. You see, Ephesians 1:13, I encourage you

    Ephesians 1:13

  780. to go read it, tells us that at the

  781. point of salvation that we are sealed

  782. with the Holy Spirit, and the Holy

  783. Spirit comes to dwell within us.

  784. But then we believe that there's a

  785. second infilling of the Holy Spirit, a

  786. baptism of the Holy Spirit. Luke 3:16

    Luke 3:16

  787. tells us that John the Baptist [music]

  788. tells us that Jesus will baptize with

  789. fire and with spirit. And so, there's a

  790. second infilling. And we see this happen

  791. on the day of Pentecost in the in Acts

  792. two. But then we sit sometimes wondering

  793. what we do with this power.

  794. But thankful for scriptures, the living

  795. breathing word of God. In in 1

  796. Corinthians 12, Paul tells us how to

  797. approach this. And one of the ways that

  798. the spirit manifests through us is

  799. through the miraculous. And so have the

  800. confidence that this is not a man-made

  801. concept.

  802. That's what the word of God says.

  803. I want to contend for miracles.

  804. If ever I want to have naivity is for

  805. this,

  806. that my God can and is able. And I'll

  807. believe it. Not that it always works

  808. out, but I'll believe it. I'll have the

  809. boldness and courage to know I don't

  810. answer and I don't own the miraculous.

  811. And so I don't own the unanswered

  812. prayer. and I won't allow my pride to

  813. step in the way from me walking up to an

  814. altar and believing that in a moment God

  815. can change things for me.

  816. So, as I land this plane, I want to

  817. leave you with something I've been

  818. pondering over the last few weeks on one

  819. of my favorite verses around faith and

  820. many of you would know it out of the

  821. faith chapter in Hebrews 11 simply

  822. starts by saying this.

  823. It says, "Now faith is the assurance of

  824. things hoped for, the conviction of

  825. things not seen. For by it the people of

  826. old received the commendation." And I

  827. was [music] thinking and studying this

  828. verse and I came across a commentary

  829. that really just stirred my heart. A

  830. commentary on this verse, Matthew

  831. Henry's commentary says this, and I want

  832. to leave you with this. A definition of

  833. grace, a definition of the grace of

  834. faith in two parts. It is the substance

  835. of things hoped for. Faith and hope go

  836. together and the same things that are

  837. the object of our hope are the object of

  838. our faith. Faith is a firm conviction

  839. and expectation that God will fulfill

  840. all [music] he has promised to us in

  841. Christ. And when believers exercise

  842. faith, they are filled with joy

  843. unspeakable and full of glory. It is

  844. also the evidence of things not seen.

  845. See, faith demonstrates to the mind the

  846. reality of those things that cannot be

  847. discerned by the physical sight. And

  848. here is the the line that got

  849. faith. It is intended to serve the

  850. believer in the place of sight and to be

  851. to the soul and to be to the soul

  852. all that the senses are to the body.

  853. So my simple question to us all today is

  854. this. As we step through the next four

  855. weeks together into the rest of the

  856. year, as we believe for the miraculous,

  857. as we ask, believe, and content, [music]

  858. not just for ourselves, but for one

  859. another in this room,

  860. who's the object of your faith?

  861. Is your object unbelief?

  862. Is the object of your faith trying to

  863. increase the measure of faith you have?

  864. Or is the object of your faith

  865. the pioneer and perfector of your faith

  866. Christ Jesus?

  867. Ask, believe, and contend.

  868. a willingness and a boldness to be

  869. uncomfortable

  870. with every head bow and eye closed.

  871. I said that um the Bible tells us in

  872. Ephesians 1:13 that we are sealed by the

    Ephesians 1:13

  873. Holy Spirit at the point of salvation.

  874. that when we accept Jesus as a Lord and

  875. Savior of our lives, that the Holy

  876. Spirit dwells within us.

  877. There are people in this room, I

  878. believe, that need to come into right

  879. standing with Jesus.

  880. I want to pray for two groups of people.

  881. The first is you're saying, "Luke, I've

  882. never said yes to Jesus. If I got to be

  883. honest, Luke, I've been coming to church

  884. for a while, but I've never actually

  885. accepted Jesus to be the Lord and Savior

  886. of my life. Not a moral compass, but the

  887. Lord of my life.

  888. Second group of people I want to pray

  889. for is that one time you allowed him to

  890. be the Lord and Savior of your life, but

  891. you know in your heart that you've

  892. turned away from him. Friends, there's

  893. no condemnation for those who are in

  894. Christ Jesus.

  895. You can never run too far from him. No

  896. height, no depth

  897. can separate you from the love of God.

  898. Friends, today is the day of salvation.

  899. Today is the day you come into right

  900. standing. [music] If that's you, on the

  901. count of three, if you'd be bold enough

  902. just to put your hand up high enough and

  903. long enough for me to see. I'll ask you

  904. to slip it straight back down and we'll

  905. say a prayer together. One friend, know

  906. that Jesus loves you so, so much that

  907. even if you were the only person on

  908. planet Earth, God would have sent his

  909. son for you. Bible says that for the joy

  910. that was set before you before him, he

  911. endured the cross and he hung there on

  912. that cross with you in mind, with

  913. relationship with you in mind.

  914. Three, if that's you, would you have the

  915. confidence just to raise your hand high

  916. enough and say yes to Jesus? You don't

  917. say yes to me

  918. saying yes to Jesus either for the first

  919. time

  920. or you're recommitting your life to the

  921. Lord.

  922. Thank you for that hand. Thank you. Come

  923. on.

  924. Anybody else want to say yes to Jesus?

  925. Bible says that today is [music] the day

  926. of salvation.

  927. As a church family, whether you raised

  928. your hand or not, we're going to say

  929. this prayer out together.

  930. We do this because we are family. But

  931. listen, church, for one second, every

  932. eye focusing on me, I pray we'd never

  933. take this moment too lightly or just

  934. something that we do. The Bible says

  935. that when even one sinner comes into

  936. right standing with God, that with one

  937. unbeliever, with one person who felt

  938. like they are far from God, when one

  939. person [music] comes into right standing

  940. with God, that the heavens celebrate.

  941. But we never take this for granted, this

  942. [music] moment right here. So, as a

  943. church family,

  944. we're going to say it from our hearts to

  945. God's ears. and we're going to support

  946. our brothers and sisters that have made

  947. a decision today to follow Christ. So

  948. repeat after me. Say, "Dear Lord Jesus,

  949. thank you for dying on the cross for me.

  950. I pray you'd forgive me of my sins.

  951. Lord, I invite you to be the Lord and

  952. Savior of my life.

  953. not just a moral compass

  954. but to be Lord and Savior

  955. of all of who I am.

  956. Would you guide me? Would you guard me?

  957. Would you give me peace in Jesus mighty

  958. name? And all God's people said, "Come

  959. on, let's celebrate with those
