-
This world tends to celebrate a certain kind of wisdom.
-
The sharp negotiator, the person who always has the perfect comeback, the leader who gets results no matter who gets stepped on along the way.
-
We're taught to admire cleverness, confidence, and the ability to win.
-
But James draws a hard line between that kind of wisdom and the kind that actually comes from God.
-
The difference has nothing to do with intelligence, it has everything to do with character.
-
James 3.17 says, But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure, then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere.
-
Notice that purity comes first on the list, before peace, before gentleness, before mercy.
-
The world's version of wisdom often prizes being right, being strategic or coming out ahead.
-
Heaven's wisdom starts somewhere else entirely, with a heart that is generally undivided before God.
-
From that purity comes a wisdom that is willing to yield, quick to show mercy, and free from favoritism or hidden agendas.
-
This is wisdom measured not by how forcefully it wins at an argument, but by the fruit it leaves behind in relationships.
-
Jesus, you are wisdom itself.
-
In your life display perfect purity alongside perfect gentleness, never sacrificing one for the other.
-
Thank you that your wisdom toward us is full of mercy, meeting our mistakes with grace rather than harsh judgment.
-
Now ask the Holy Spirit to reveal where your own version of wisdom has been more concerned with being right, being peaceful or merciful.
-
Pray that the Holy Spirit will give them wisdom that is pure, peace-loving, and full of mercy.
-
Pray for reconciliation in any relationships currently marked by conflict, asking for heavenly wisdom to guide the way forward.
-
We ask for wisdom that is pure, peaceful, and merciful.
-
Amen.
