  1. [SPEAKER_00]: All right, so tonight we're going to be headed into Luke chapter number four.

  2. [SPEAKER_00]: We'll be reading about Jesus being tempted by Satan and the wilderness.

  3. [SPEAKER_00]: But before we jump into that and read it, I want to back up a little bit, just a little bit.

  4. [SPEAKER_00]: And it's now we're from context around the passages because Luke in his narrative really sets the story up in a super interesting way, I think.

  5. [SPEAKER_00]: So question for the group.

  6. [SPEAKER_00]: super entertaining, talking about, prepare, John the Baptist, preparing the way for Jesus to come on to the scene, right?

  7. [SPEAKER_00]: In the story ends with Jesus being baptized by John.

  8. [SPEAKER_00]: Gonna go ahead and read that, Luke chapter 3, verse 21, the dead's with, when Jesus also have been baptized and was praying, the heavens were opened and the Holy Spirit descended on him and bodily form like a dove.

    Luke 3:21

  9. [SPEAKER_00]: The voice came from heaven saying, you are my beloved son, with you, I am well pleased.

  10. [SPEAKER_00]: Pay attention to that word, son, because I'm coming back to that throughout this lesson.

  11. [SPEAKER_00]: And then, before narrating what happens next, they'll look to the whole story about John preparing the way, Jesus is getting baptized, and then before continuing to say what Jesus did next, Luke takes a pause, and if you see it open nearby, it will, there's this long list of names.

  12. [SPEAKER_00]: It's Jesus's genealogy, so he starts with Jesus and he works his way all the way through Israel, all the way back to Adam.

  13. [SPEAKER_00]: I'm not gonna read,

  14. [SPEAKER_00]: that whole genealogy, because I would butcher a lot of the names, although I am in search of baby names, so that could be useful.

  15. [SPEAKER_00]: But I'm going to like breeze through a little bit and just kind of stop at some hotspots where we kind of know the names.

  16. [SPEAKER_00]: So starting the verse 23 through 38, we have the genealogy.

  17. [SPEAKER_00]: It says, Jesus, when he began his ministry, was about 30 years of age.

  18. [SPEAKER_00]: Being the son, as was supposed, of Joseph, the son of Heli, the son of Mehmet.

  19. [SPEAKER_00]: First 31, the son of Nathan, the son of David, we don't have King David, first 32, the son of Jesse, the son of Obed, the son of Boaz, he married Ruth, I don't remember that's where in the Bible.

  20. [SPEAKER_00]: The son of Salah, I looked it up and he met ended up marrying Ray had in the Bible.

  21. [SPEAKER_00]: And then the son of Nashon, I like him up, he's the chief leader of the tribe of Judah in the wilderness, which is kind of cool.

  22. [SPEAKER_00]: Son of Nashon.

  23. [SPEAKER_00]: First 33, the son of Judah, 34, the son of Jacob, Isaac Abraham.

  24. [SPEAKER_00]: We know those names.

  25. [SPEAKER_00]: Now we're going to really old.

  26. [SPEAKER_00]: First 36, the son of Noah.

  27. [SPEAKER_00]: And finally, at the end of verse 38, says, the son of Adam, the son of God.

  28. [SPEAKER_00]: See Luke starts with Jesus and works with it all the way back to the history, ending with Adam.

  29. [SPEAKER_00]: And notice how it ends.

  30. [SPEAKER_00]: It says, Adam, the son of God.

  31. [SPEAKER_00]: Luke starts.

  32. [SPEAKER_00]: And Jesus' baptism, God speaking from heaven and saying, this is my beloved son.

  33. [SPEAKER_00]: And then he traces back to Jesus' family line, all the way back to Adam, where he's called the son of God.

  34. [SPEAKER_00]: This brings us to our first point tonight.

  35. [SPEAKER_00]: The first thing we're gonna look at, it's gonna be a topic of the sons who fell short.

  36. [SPEAKER_00]: We'll take a quick look at this long line of sons, beginning with the story that started it all.

  37. [SPEAKER_00]: But before we do that, I'm gonna go ahead and pray.

  38. [SPEAKER_00]: Join the Father, thank you for today.

  39. [SPEAKER_00]: Tonight, thank you for this evening.

  40. [SPEAKER_00]: Pretty that you help call my nerves, help me teach this lesson clearly.

  41. [SPEAKER_00]: Speak to you in your word.

  42. [SPEAKER_00]: Pretty that you will just, yeah, help me speak clearly.

  43. [SPEAKER_00]: Pray for those listening that they can listen with open ears and find an understanding in your scripture.

  44. [SPEAKER_00]: We know that we require you, Lord, to work in our heart, to help us understand scripture, to help us understand your ways and what you've done.

  45. [SPEAKER_00]: So I pray that you open up eyes tonight and to open up ears to hear your words.

  46. [SPEAKER_00]: And here in Amripe, Amripe.

  47. [SPEAKER_00]: So the sons who fell short.

  48. [SPEAKER_00]: All the way, I thought I was going to go back a little bit sad some context.

  49. [SPEAKER_00]: Well, all the ways I get to the beginning, God created that on.

  50. [SPEAKER_00]: And he's made out of what the purpose to be given this image and he gave him authority.

  51. [SPEAKER_00]: And he was supposed to subdue and have dominion over the earth.

  52. [SPEAKER_00]: But then you guys know the story.

  53. [SPEAKER_00]: The surface comes along.

  54. [SPEAKER_00]: Intense?

  55. [SPEAKER_00]: not true.

  56. [SPEAKER_00]: But then they ended up beating of the fruit.

  57. [SPEAKER_00]: They got per base.

  58. [SPEAKER_00]: Adam fell.

  59. [SPEAKER_00]: Adam fell short.

  60. [SPEAKER_00]: And sin entered into the world.

  61. [SPEAKER_00]: Adam needs got kicked out of the garden out of God's presence.

  62. [SPEAKER_00]: You see Adam, the son of God fell short.

  63. [SPEAKER_00]: And from that point on, the Old Testament becomes this long story of people who keep falling short.

  64. [SPEAKER_00]: It leaves us with the question, will anybody remain faithful to God?

  65. [SPEAKER_00]: Will anyone defeat the serpent?

  66. [SPEAKER_00]: From here, things get really bad.

  67. [SPEAKER_00]: Really bad.

  68. [SPEAKER_00]: You've got Adam's own sons, Cain and Abel.

  69. [SPEAKER_00]: That did not end well.

  70. [SPEAKER_00]: Murder in the family.

  71. [SPEAKER_00]: Cain murdered Abel.

  72. [SPEAKER_00]: In the world, eventually they are, it becomes so filled with violence and corruption that God says he's just gonna wipe everything out.

  73. [SPEAKER_00]: It's so wicked, it grieves God's heart.

  74. [SPEAKER_00]: But then there's Noah, who's found righteous in the eyes of God.

  75. [SPEAKER_00]: And Noah, pervert, there's right Noah and his family.

  76. [SPEAKER_00]: And the flood comes, but everyone's laughing.

  77. [SPEAKER_00]: It almost looks like there's a fresh start.

  78. [SPEAKER_00]: Maybe Noah is the new Adam and he'll make things right.

  79. [SPEAKER_00]: But he doesn't.

  80. [SPEAKER_00]: Noah ends up falling short as well.

  81. [SPEAKER_00]: In Jenner's past, and God ends up choosing a man-made Abraham or Abraham.

  82. [SPEAKER_00]: And he promises him that he's going to give him a great family, make our nation out of his family, and that through this family, all the families of the world will be blessed.

  83. [SPEAKER_00]: And then you get Abraham, had a son, Isaac, and Isaac had a son, Jacob.

  84. [SPEAKER_00]: God, meaning, Jacob, the Israel, Israel has 12 sons.

  85. [SPEAKER_00]: Those 12 sons end up in Egypt.

  86. [SPEAKER_00]: You guys probably know the story.

  87. [SPEAKER_00]: Do Joseph, and then the promise comes true.

  88. [SPEAKER_00]: They start turning into a, they start growing and growing and growing another of the size of a nation, but then they're in captivity in Egypt.

  89. [SPEAKER_00]: And then Moses stepped on to the sea.

  90. [SPEAKER_00]: And God called Moses to lead his people out of Egypt.

  91. [SPEAKER_00]: He got through Moses, rescues him from Pharaoh, he brings the people through the Red Sea, and he leads him into the wilderness.

  92. [SPEAKER_00]: But, I mean, full bird walk, one in epic stories, the epithesis, it's like one of my favorite.

  93. [SPEAKER_00]: You got the awesome plays in the party through the Red Sea, and Moses is confronting Pharaoh, like the ruling empire of the region, Egypt, and it's just a showdown between God and all of the lower case guys of Egypt, and it's just an awesome story.

  94. [SPEAKER_00]: God rescues his people from there and we've got something really important here for our story tonight.

  95. [SPEAKER_00]: So listen to what God, God telling Moses at the burning bush, hey Moses, I'm calling you to go rescue my people.

  96. [SPEAKER_00]: And he tells Moses to tell this to Pharaoh when he meets him.

  97. [SPEAKER_00]: Exist 422 says, Then you Moses shall say to Pharaoh, this is God talking.

  98. [SPEAKER_00]: Thus says the Lord, Israel is my first born son.

  99. [SPEAKER_00]: And I say to you, let my son go that he may serve me.

  100. [SPEAKER_00]: There's that word again, subtle, right?

  101. [SPEAKER_00]: We looked at Adam, the son of God, and now God calls the nation of Israel, his son.

  102. [SPEAKER_00]: So God brings his son, Israel, through the reti and to the wilderness.

  103. [SPEAKER_00]: And for 40 years, again, I'm sorry, Israel is tested.

  104. [SPEAKER_00]: They get really hungry, and they complain, and sometimes they fail to trust God.

  105. [SPEAKER_00]: They're tempted by the other gods around them.

  106. [SPEAKER_00]: They make fail, or they make that golden cat really early on, that they're tempted by other gods,

  107. [SPEAKER_00]: They become afraid and dissatisfied, they have to put God to the test, and we see through this story that ultimately Israel, God's Son falls short, and the pattern that just keeps continuing.

  108. [SPEAKER_00]: No one was a righteous man that walked with God himself, but he fell short.

  109. [SPEAKER_00]: Abraham was the man of incredible faith, but he fell short.

  110. [SPEAKER_00]: Moses spoke with God and did incredible things, amazing epic things, but he fell short.

  111. [SPEAKER_00]: Samson was incredibly strong, David was a great king and a man after God's own heart.

  112. [SPEAKER_00]: Solomon was incredibly wise, but every single one of them may be catching on now, they fell short.

  113. [SPEAKER_00]: And that brings us all the way back to where we are in the story of Luke.

  114. [SPEAKER_00]: So remember where we left off, God had just spoken from heaven and called Jesus, my beloved son.

  115. [SPEAKER_00]: after the baptism.

  116. [SPEAKER_00]: Then Luke traces fit Jesus' family line all the way back to Adam, the son of God.

  117. [SPEAKER_00]: And the pattern we've seen is Adam, the son of God, was tempted, and he fell short.

  118. [SPEAKER_00]: Is your God's son was tempted in the wilderness, and they fell short?

  119. [SPEAKER_00]: And that brings us all the way back to what we are at, sorry, in Luke chapter 4 verse 1.

    Luke 4:1

  120. [SPEAKER_00]: Now, watch what happens to Jesus.

  121. [SPEAKER_00]: So, we've seen Israel, we've seen Adam, let's see what happens to Jesus.

  122. [SPEAKER_00]: Luke, chapter 4, verse 1.

    Luke 4:1

  123. [SPEAKER_00]: In Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan where He was baptized and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness.

  124. [SPEAKER_00]: For 40 days, being tempted by the devil.

  125. [SPEAKER_00]: Does any of that sound familiar to you?

  126. [SPEAKER_00]: Based on the big recap we just went through.

  127. [SPEAKER_00]: We've got the Son of God, we've got the wilderness, we've got the word 40 or the number 40, and we've got temptations by the devil.

  128. [SPEAKER_00]: Just the shadow there, what's happening to Adam, what's happening to Israel, the wilderness, and now Jesus is here, stepping into almost the same situation.

  129. [SPEAKER_00]: And Luke sets this scene, and now the question is, what will this son do?

  130. [SPEAKER_00]: Will this son be faithful?

  131. [SPEAKER_00]: And while that brings us to our second point, the faithful son.

  132. [SPEAKER_00]: See, Jesus is going to face temptation just like Adam.

  133. [SPEAKER_00]: He's going to experience hunger and testing in the wilderness, just like Israel, and let's see what happens.

  134. [SPEAKER_00]: Let's read, continue on, or just continue starting over.

  135. [SPEAKER_00]: First, number one, and Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan, and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness for 40 days, being tempted by the devil.

  136. [SPEAKER_00]: And he ate nothing during those days, and when they were ended,

  137. [SPEAKER_00]: Now that no gusts in the gospel math here mentioned use in the wilderness fasting, so he's purposely not eating food.

  138. [SPEAKER_00]: He's fasting, perhaps praying, meditating on God's word, baby.

  139. [SPEAKER_00]: Um, likely meditating and thinking about the ministry that he's about to go down the passing epic three-year journey.

  140. [SPEAKER_00]: Um, he's praying and fasting in the wilderness and he's not eating and 40 days ago.

  141. [SPEAKER_00]: Bye.

  142. [SPEAKER_00]: That's a long time.

  143. [SPEAKER_00]: I've never gone close to that, from without eating.

  144. [SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I imagine something you could get home from school and you're like, ma, I'm starving.

  145. [SPEAKER_00]: But we got here, Luke's just saying, 40 days, and probably hungry.

  146. [SPEAKER_00]: That seems like a pretty big understanding to be hungry, definitely hungry.

  147. [SPEAKER_00]: And so the devil comes up to him.

  148. [SPEAKER_00]: Seems like an opportunity in time and says, if you are the son of God, command this stone to become bread.

  149. [SPEAKER_00]: And Jesus answered him, it is written.

  150. [SPEAKER_00]: by bread alone.

  151. [SPEAKER_00]: Okay, so I had a pause on the time when I think about it, because what exactly is the temptation here?

  152. [SPEAKER_00]: It's not wrong to eat bread.

  153. [SPEAKER_00]: When Jesus says amen for 48, it's certainly hungry.

  154. [SPEAKER_00]: It's not wrong for Jesus to, it's not necessarily wrong for Jesus to use his power to do miracles.

  155. [SPEAKER_00]: So what is actually going wrong here?

  156. [SPEAKER_00]: Well, the answer for that, I think it's just clearly when you look at Jesus's answer.

  157. [SPEAKER_00]: He says, it's written man shall not live by bread alone.

  158. [SPEAKER_00]: And Jesus points at the answer there.

  159. [SPEAKER_00]: And I think of one word, trust.

  160. [SPEAKER_00]: You see, Satan is tempting Jesus to satisfy his hunger on his own terms rather than trusting for his father to provide.

  161. [SPEAKER_00]: This takes us right back to Israel in the wilderness again.

  162. [SPEAKER_00]: In fact, pretty much immediately.

  163. [SPEAKER_00]: They parted the refugees or got parted the Red Sea.

  164. [SPEAKER_00]: They went through into the wilderness.

  165. [SPEAKER_00]: And some days ago, by I think I'm not gonna have this one we get this first story about too.

  166. [SPEAKER_00]: And they are English, they're English, they're English, even they're grumble and they're like, we are starving Moses, you brought us out here to die.

  167. [SPEAKER_00]: We want food.

  168. [SPEAKER_00]: Oh, we just just go back to Egypt.

  169. [SPEAKER_00]: You should have left us an Egypt.

  170. [SPEAKER_00]: They had bread and meat pops and leeks.

  171. [SPEAKER_00]: They're just like,

  172. [SPEAKER_00]: craving a weird vegetable.

  173. [SPEAKER_00]: I think there's just less of this flavor we had to.

  174. [SPEAKER_00]: This is horrible.

  175. [SPEAKER_00]: That's their first like big thing that's going on here and they were not trusting God.

  176. [SPEAKER_00]: They were grumbling and complaining all the way.

  177. [SPEAKER_00]: God is trying to teach Israel something through their hunger though.

  178. [SPEAKER_00]: See this full verse, due to around 83, that's where Jesus is court and says this.

  179. [SPEAKER_00]: Moses is talking to children of Israel about their time in the wilderness, and he humbled you and let you hunger, and he fed you with manna, that he might make you know what man does not live by bread alone, that's what Jesus quoted, but man lives by every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord.

  180. [SPEAKER_00]: See, Moses is teaching in the fair life, what is being preserved by the bread or the man that comes down from this guy?

  181. [SPEAKER_00]: It wasn't the bread, it wasn't the food.

  182. [SPEAKER_00]: It was God's word.

  183. [SPEAKER_00]: God was sending that man a down with his word.

  184. [SPEAKER_00]: God was gonna provide for them.

  185. [SPEAKER_00]: God had, they just needed to trust God.

  186. [SPEAKER_00]: That was the point of this testing in the wilderness.

  187. [SPEAKER_00]: But the children of Israel, they failed that testing.

  188. [SPEAKER_00]: They fell short.

  189. [SPEAKER_00]: And Jesus was ultimately saying here by rejecting the devil's plea, the temptation, to make your own provision.

  190. [SPEAKER_00]: He's saying, I'm gonna trust my father instead.

  191. [SPEAKER_00]: I'm gonna depend on my father for what he provides for.

  192. [SPEAKER_00]: So we see that when Israel's hungry new wilderness, they failed to trust God.

  193. [SPEAKER_00]: And when Jesus was hungry in the wilderness, he remained faithful.

  194. [SPEAKER_00]: Let's keep reading.

  195. [SPEAKER_00]: First number five.

  196. [SPEAKER_00]: Okay, the devil says, so that devil takes him up and shows him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time.

  197. [SPEAKER_00]: All right, pause real quick.

  198. [SPEAKER_00]: Cause that verse sounds epic to me.

  199. [SPEAKER_00]: I don't know what you do.

  200. [SPEAKER_00]: Just really guess my mind thinking like, what is even happening here?

  201. [SPEAKER_00]: The devil picks him up and says, in Matthews, picks him up to a mouth and top and shows him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time.

  202. [SPEAKER_00]: Now, I can't exactly answer what exactly was going on there, but we can kind of brainstorm a little bit and just make it fun.

  203. [SPEAKER_00]: You could either be seeing all the kingdoms of the world at that moment in time and you can see their authority in their glory, maybe like the kingdom of Rome when the kingdom of...

  204. [SPEAKER_00]: But I also draw on all the kingdoms of the world, but I could think I was going on there.

  205. [SPEAKER_00]: in one moment and he's seeing all these things.

  206. [SPEAKER_00]: I don't know what it is.

  207. [SPEAKER_00]: I would love to be going to see it, but I don't, I wouldn't want to double the taking up to see it, but I would love to see it.

  208. [SPEAKER_00]: So we've got this.

  209. [SPEAKER_00]: That will pick some up, show them all the things in the world in the moment of time.

  210. [SPEAKER_00]: And he says to him, to you, Jesus, I will give all this authority and all their glory for it has been delivered to me, and I give it to whom I will.

  211. [SPEAKER_00]: If you then, will worship me, it will all be yours.

  212. [SPEAKER_00]: Satan is offering Jesus all the Kingdoms of the world.

  213. [SPEAKER_00]: There's a bit of a half lie, half truth, they ignore it on there.

  214. [SPEAKER_00]: Satan is called the Prince of this world.

  215. [SPEAKER_00]: He does have some dominion over these Kingdoms, but they're not his to give as he says.

  216. [SPEAKER_00]: God is ultimately in control.

  217. [SPEAKER_00]: That's the side of the point.

  218. [SPEAKER_00]: Satan's offering Jesus.

  219. [SPEAKER_00]: until a short cut to the kingdom.

  220. [SPEAKER_00]: See, it's interesting because Jesus actually came, John about to support paying Jesus away, and Jesus came to declare and establish the kingdom of God.

  221. [SPEAKER_00]: That's Jesus' purpose.

  222. [SPEAKER_00]: He's coming to set up this kingdom.

  223. [SPEAKER_00]: And things like, OK, Jesus, we're here for a kingdom.

  224. [SPEAKER_00]: I'll give him a month, you.

  225. [SPEAKER_00]: What do you guys do?

  226. [SPEAKER_00]: He's back, and we're here for you.

  227. [SPEAKER_00]: And that short cut would be a sin if Jesus took it, right?

  228. [SPEAKER_00]: It's basically a short cut to gaining kingdoms.

  229. [SPEAKER_00]: but it's without following his father's path to get there.

  230. [SPEAKER_00]: There is no suffering, there's no cross.

  231. [SPEAKER_00]: He's saying, Jesus, do you just have to bow down to me?

  232. [SPEAKER_00]: But let's see how Jesus responds, first aid.

  233. [SPEAKER_00]: And Jesus answered him, it is written, you shall worship the Lord of God, and him only shall you serve.

  234. [SPEAKER_00]: Once again, that takes us right back to Israel in the wilderness.

  235. [SPEAKER_00]: And Jesus could straight from Deuteronomy.

  236. [SPEAKER_00]: I see when the children of Israel are going through it, well then if they have lots of other nations around them, they just came out of Egypt where they have lots of other gods as well.

  237. [SPEAKER_00]: The nations around them worship other gods and it's probably pretty convenient to fit in with the people around you.

  238. [SPEAKER_00]: As they traveled throughout the land, they probably would get pretty snout with some of their neighbors.

  239. [SPEAKER_00]: They weren't supposed to be, but they had time to go to a friend with my friends and Mary and their neighbors.

  240. [SPEAKER_00]: And then it can be pretty easy just to be like, okay, I'll worship the God that you worship.

  241. [SPEAKER_00]: I'll go out of the church or the temple that you go to.

  242. [SPEAKER_00]: And suddenly you see the tune of Israel falling away, breaking the commandment to worship only God, and they worshiping all these other gods.

  243. [SPEAKER_00]: And so that's the backstory of what's happening in Deuteronomy at the time, or what Moses is talking about.

  244. [SPEAKER_00]: And we see ultimately the Israel, God's son, they failed to worship God alone.

  245. [SPEAKER_00]: I mean, even think of like, immediately in the wilderness, Moses goes up to get to think of commandments and they pull all other jewelry together and make a statue, golden calf.

  246. [SPEAKER_00]: They turned away.

  247. [SPEAKER_00]: Israel, God's son, failed to worship God alone.

  248. [SPEAKER_00]: But when Satan offers Jesus all the kingdoms of the world.

  249. [SPEAKER_00]: Pretty convenient, just an exchange for his worship, for him to bow down and submit to the authority or recognize even to the authority.

  250. [SPEAKER_00]: Jesus refuses.

  251. [SPEAKER_00]: He will worship and serve his father alone.

  252. [SPEAKER_00]: Jesus remained faithful.

  253. [SPEAKER_00]: And now the last one, verse nine.

  254. [SPEAKER_00]: And he took him, Jesus, to Jerusalem, and set him on the pinnacle of the temple and set to him.

  255. [SPEAKER_00]: If you are the son of God, throw yourself down from here.

  256. [SPEAKER_00]: For it is written, he will command his angels concerning you to guard you and another quote.

  257. [SPEAKER_00]: On their hands, they will bear you up, last you strike your foot against the stone.

  258. [SPEAKER_00]: Okay, so kind of a lot to unpack there.

  259. [SPEAKER_00]: But basically, taking pictures up to the top of the temple, temples are really big, structure like the biggest by far.

  260. [SPEAKER_00]: I think that looks good up this way.

  261. [SPEAKER_00]: There did a 40-story building, essentially, but nothing you do in the mirror, I introduced them.

  262. [SPEAKER_00]: So they're really high up, overlooking the big city of Jerusalem, and Satan, cracking, starts quoting the scripture.

  263. [SPEAKER_00]: The scripture that's actually about the prophesied Messiah, Jesus, he's like, the scripture says this, says God's going to command His angels about to guard you.

  264. [SPEAKER_00]: And they're going to bear you up with their hands and last year's, yeah, it's with the rest of us coming to three, I can't say it better than Tom's.

  265. [SPEAKER_00]: On their hands, they will bear you up unless you strike your foot against the stone.

  266. [SPEAKER_00]: He's quoting Tom 91, basically saying, okay fine, you say you trust your father, I get it.

  267. [SPEAKER_00]: So then let's see, jump down, have him catch you with the danger.

  268. [SPEAKER_00]: God promises to protect you after all in his scripture.

  269. [SPEAKER_00]: Well, let's see how Jesus responds to that situation.

  270. [SPEAKER_00]: First 12, and Jesus answered him, it is said, you shall not put the Lord your God to the test.

  271. [SPEAKER_00]: Once again, Jesus quotes the record from Deoderonomy that helps to get context of what's happening here.

  272. [SPEAKER_00]: Deoderonomy 16, you shall not put the Lord your God to the test.

  273. [SPEAKER_00]: As you test it, him, that Massa.

  274. [SPEAKER_00]: Massa, that's the neck of this, in the wilderness.

  275. [SPEAKER_00]: they weren't hungry, but they were thirsty this time, they're like, we don't have water, we're gonna die, why did you take this out here?

  276. [SPEAKER_00]: I mean, they've already seen a ton of miracles, but it's kind of a demon.

  277. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, so this is really, we need water, we're gonna die, Moses, what are you doing to us?

  278. [SPEAKER_00]: And then they took it a step further.

  279. [SPEAKER_00]: is the Lord even among us, like, God, I even dare do it.

  280. [SPEAKER_00]: There you would give us water right now.

  281. [SPEAKER_00]: That's testing God.

  282. [SPEAKER_00]: That's not trusting the God things they care of you.

  283. [SPEAKER_00]: That's saying, God, prove yourself.

  284. [SPEAKER_00]: Prove that you're there.

  285. [SPEAKER_00]: And that's what the Tronor Vizier will do it.

  286. [SPEAKER_00]: Is your put God to the test?

  287. [SPEAKER_00]: and Satan will Jesus to do this very same thing.

  288. [SPEAKER_00]: Make your father prove himself to you, force him to protect you.

  289. [SPEAKER_00]: But Jesus doesn't need to make his father prove anything.

  290. [SPEAKER_00]: He trusts him.

  291. [SPEAKER_00]: So is your tested government wilderness and they felt short?

  292. [SPEAKER_00]: Jesus tested, Jesus has tested in the wilderness, and he remained faithful.

  293. [SPEAKER_00]: First 13 ends it, and when the devil had ended every temptation, he departed from him until an opportune time.

  294. [SPEAKER_00]: And Matthew's account has an interesting part that, after saying these, got some of the angels to minister to him.

  295. [SPEAKER_00]: So in the end, his father did provide for all his needs, which is pretty awesome.

  296. [SPEAKER_00]: But stepping back, let's take a look at what just happened in the big picture.

  297. [SPEAKER_00]: See, the serpent came to Adam, and the garden full of food and surplus.

  298. [SPEAKER_00]: Intempted him, and Adam failed to trust to God.

  299. [SPEAKER_00]: While Jesus started being in a wilderness, 40 days without food, the devil tempted him to make some bread.

  300. [SPEAKER_00]: And Jesus, dead, trusted his father.

  301. [SPEAKER_00]: It's just about 40 years in the wilderness.

  302. [SPEAKER_00]: They were hungry and thirsty.

  303. [SPEAKER_00]: They failed to trust God.

  304. [SPEAKER_00]: They turned aside and they worshiped other gods.

  305. [SPEAKER_00]: They put God to the test over and over again.

  306. [SPEAKER_00]: But then Jesus, he spends 40 days in the wilderness.

  307. [SPEAKER_00]: When he's hungry, he trusts his father.

  308. [SPEAKER_00]: When he's tempted to worship other gods, he chooses just to worship his father.

  309. [SPEAKER_00]: And he refuses to put God to the test.

  310. [SPEAKER_00]: Adam fell short, is your a fell short, but Jesus, he remains faithful.

  311. [SPEAKER_00]: And this wasn't just two of these three temptations.

  312. [SPEAKER_00]: It does say after all that Satan left him until an opportune time.

  313. [SPEAKER_00]: Jesus continued to face temptations and hardship throughout his life.

  314. [SPEAKER_00]: There's some big ones near the end of his life.

  315. [SPEAKER_00]: But really, you see, Jesus just living a full life, and you can imagine all that goes along with that.

  316. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, ultimately we see that Jesus he never gave in.

  317. [SPEAKER_00]: Jesus lived his entire life without sin.

  318. [SPEAKER_00]: He perfectly trusted and obeyed and remained faithful to his father.

  319. [SPEAKER_00]: Jesus is finally the faithful son.

  320. [SPEAKER_00]: That long line of sons that fell short has been broken.

  321. [SPEAKER_00]: The faithful son has come.

  322. [SPEAKER_00]: So, what does this all mean for us then?

  323. [SPEAKER_00]: but like Adam and if you're on all the fun back to them, we too, me and you have fallen short.

  324. [SPEAKER_00]: From a state 23 for all have sinned and false short of the glory of God.

  325. [SPEAKER_00]: We're all in that big predicament.

  326. [SPEAKER_00]: When I begin meditating on this chapter, I look.

  327. [SPEAKER_00]: The first verse that came to my mind was from Hebrews chapter 4.

    Hebrews 4 chapter mention

  328. [SPEAKER_00]: Actually, how did I prepare on the screen?

  329. [SPEAKER_00]: I'm going to read one verse backwards, and we're going to get to the screen first.

  330. [SPEAKER_00]: First 14 says, since then, we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast to our confession.

  331. [SPEAKER_00]: He's saying, Jesus, now are high priest, and this is super awesome, great news because verse 15, for we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin.

  332. [SPEAKER_00]: Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

  333. [SPEAKER_00]: See, Jesus experienced all the hardships of life throughout his journey and this fallen world.

  334. [SPEAKER_00]: And it leads us to our third and final point, which is John Nier to the Sun, the actionable thing.

  335. [SPEAKER_00]: There are two things I want to focus on from these verses, Mercy and Grace.

  336. [SPEAKER_00]: Remember, unlike Jesus, we've all fallen short.

  337. [SPEAKER_00]: We've given into temptation, we disobey God, we've all sinned, not separate us from God.

  338. [SPEAKER_00]: But doesn't a bad place, if we're going to place deserving of judgments, the wages of sin is dead.

  339. [SPEAKER_00]: And sometimes when we sinned, our instinct is to do the exact opposite of what this first tells us to draw in here.

  340. [SPEAKER_00]: We have the instinct that we see in the garden,

  341. [SPEAKER_00]: But that's the opposite of what our pastor saw this to do.

  342. [SPEAKER_00]: This first tells us to draw a near and why?

  343. [SPEAKER_00]: Because when we come to him, we find mercy.

  344. [SPEAKER_00]: The mercy means that although we deserve a judgment of punishment, because of our sin, God has compassionate towards us, and He doesn't give us the judgment that we deserve.

  345. [SPEAKER_00]: And ultimately, Jesus can offer that mercy because he had the faithful son took the judgment of all the unfaithful sons upon him.

  346. [SPEAKER_00]: Jesus who never sent, went to the cross for sinners.

  347. [SPEAKER_00]: That's me, that you.

  348. [SPEAKER_00]: So when you fall short, don't run away from do this.

  349. [SPEAKER_00]: Don't run away from God, drawn near to Jesus, and receive mercy at His throne.

  350. [SPEAKER_00]: The verse promises, you're going to find mercy.

  351. [SPEAKER_00]: That's awesome news.

  352. [SPEAKER_00]: And as a side, if you haven't truly done it before, you can't recall a time where you've approached the throne of Christ.

  353. [SPEAKER_00]: asking for mercy.

  354. [SPEAKER_00]: I just hope that this sticks in your heart and you really think about it today.

  355. [SPEAKER_00]: Because if you're not truly done this before, then you are dire need of that very mercy that Jesus is freely offering to you.

  356. [SPEAKER_00]: Because the first time who comes before Jesus asking for mercy, he grants it and you get to stand justified before him for all eternity.

  357. [SPEAKER_00]: That is the best news, ever, the gospel goodness.

  358. [SPEAKER_00]: But then there's a second one, Grace.

  359. [SPEAKER_00]: See, mercy is what we need because we follow, short?

  360. [SPEAKER_00]: Grace is what we need when we are weak, because we're weak, and when we face the patient.

  361. [SPEAKER_00]: See, look at the end of verse 16 again.

  362. [SPEAKER_00]: It says, Grace, to help in time of need.

  363. [SPEAKER_00]: See, when you're going through a hardship,

  364. [SPEAKER_00]: or you're being tempted, you don't have to go through alone.

  365. [SPEAKER_00]: Jesus is going to be there with you.

  366. [SPEAKER_00]: He's going to fight with you.

  367. [SPEAKER_00]: You don't have to fight it by yourself.

  368. [SPEAKER_00]: Draw a nearer to Jesus the verse is saying, and notice why he resides, we can come beforehand with confidence.

  369. [SPEAKER_00]: See, it says, we have a high priest that can sympathize with our weaknesses.

  370. [SPEAKER_00]: As he was tempted in every way, just as we are.

  371. [SPEAKER_00]: Jesus knows what it's like to live in this fallen world.

  372. [SPEAKER_00]: He was a child, and he grew up and had to obey his parents who weren't perfect, by the way.

  373. [SPEAKER_00]: He was a teenager who had to grow and learn the experience tongue, exhaustion, rejection, grief, pain, and temptation.

  374. [SPEAKER_00]: He saw the brokenness of this world all around him

  375. [SPEAKER_00]: And the gospel say in quite a few places that he was moved with compassion when he came across the fallen state of our world.

  376. [SPEAKER_00]: He saw the results of sin and all around him.

  377. [SPEAKER_00]: And it filled them with compassion, a love for those around them to fix it.

  378. [SPEAKER_00]: The stories in the Bible were just positive people are coming to Jesus to touch them so they can be healed.

  379. [SPEAKER_00]: And I can only imagine it's taking hours to get through these huge, longest hordes of people.

  380. [SPEAKER_00]: And Jesus is fighting through exhaustion because He's moved it compassion for these people.

  381. [SPEAKER_00]: I think I'm in another story, Jesus had friends and one of the particular died of Lazarus.

  382. [SPEAKER_00]: And Jesus shows up after he died and he sees the pain and the torment that's going on with the friends there.

  383. [SPEAKER_00]: Mary Magdalene and all the other ones around and John 1135, quick version you can memorize if you ever try to get a pretty useless list.

  384. [SPEAKER_00]: But it's really short, Jesus weft, John 1135.

  385. [SPEAKER_00]: But it's such a cough of ours because it's showing that Jesus didn't just walk through this world like, oh, no effect on me, I'm not going to say, and I don't need to touch anything that's been corrupted.

  386. [SPEAKER_00]: Jesus didn't just breathe through it and not involve himself.

  387. [SPEAKER_00]: No, Jesus was not living on bothered.

  388. [SPEAKER_00]: He was in it.

  389. [SPEAKER_00]: He put himself there.

  390. [SPEAKER_00]: He was moved to tears.

  391. [SPEAKER_00]: Weeping over this law.

  392. [SPEAKER_00]: He's seen all of this happen.

  393. [SPEAKER_00]: He's seen Abraham and Moses and Isaac and Jacob and David and Solomon.

  394. [SPEAKER_00]: He's seen it all and he's seen the horrible effects of sin and he's here and he's living in it with his friend Lazarus but it's just died and he's seen the horrible effects and he's moved the tears that we, he's just knows.

  395. [SPEAKER_00]: He's lived that full life honor.

  396. [SPEAKER_00]: So he's tempted and he suffered in all the ways that we are too.

  397. [SPEAKER_00]: It may seem like a small thing, but Jesus is going to understand this first sense.

  398. [SPEAKER_00]: Jesus understands our high praise, He understands everything that we can go through.

  399. [SPEAKER_00]: And that's why it's such an awesome verse, just to draw near to Him, He understands.

  400. [SPEAKER_00]: When you're struggling, draw near to Jesus, pray, ask Him for help because He understands.

  401. [SPEAKER_00]: And he was promises that at his throne, you will find grace at that time of lead.

  402. [SPEAKER_00]: What wonderful and awesome news that really is, let's pray.
