  1. Shalom, wonderful family, and welcome to today's morning glory devotion.

  2. We are happy to be presenting to you a script

  3. written by our brother, Deacon Joshua Amavialor, from the Harvest

  4. Chapel International, Denyame Kumasi. Let us kindly share a word

  5. of prayer. Father, We thank you for your goodness and

  6. kindness towards us this day. Lord, we pray and commit

  7. our time in your word into your hands. Please build

  8. over us, refresh us, and empower us. Cause your light

  9. to shine on our hearts through your word and transform

  10. us in Jesus' name. Amen. Let us kindly take a

  11. confession today from Joshua chapter 1 verse 8. Joshua chapter

    Joshua 1:8 Joshua 1:8

  12. 1 verse 8. This book of the law shall not

  13. depart out of my mouth, but I shall meditate in

  14. it day and night, that I may observe to do

  15. according to all that is written in it. For then

  16. I will make my way prosperous, and then I will

  17. have good success. Amen. The title of today's devotion is,

  18. Do Not Despair. Do Not Despair. And this is the

  19. first part of a two-part series written by our brother,

  20. Deacon Joshua Amavialo. Our scripture reading is taken from Isaiah

    Isaiah 61 chapter mention

  21. chapter 61, the verse 1 to 3. Isaiah 61, the

  22. verse 1 to 3. I will be reading from the

  23. New Living Translation. The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is

  24. upon me, for the Lord has anointed me to bring

  25. good news to the poor. He has sent me to

  26. comfort the brokenhearted and to proclaim that captives will be

  27. released and prisoners will be freed. He has sent me

  28. to tell those who mourn that the time of the

  29. Lord's favor has come, and with it the day of

  30. God's anger against their enemies. To all who mourn in Israel,

  31. he will give a crown of beauty for ashes, a

  32. joyous blessing instead of mourning, festive praise instead of despair.

  33. In their righteousness, they will be like great oaks that

  34. the Lord has planted for his own glory. The Lord

  35. add his blessing to the reading and hearing of this word.

  36. Thanks be to God. Amen. Do not despair. Part 1. Beloved,

  37. despair comes at the tail end of hope when all

  38. is lost and there does not seem to be a

  39. way forward. There are many things that can lead us

  40. to despair, including failure, loss, misfortune, loneliness, guilt, shame, betrayal,

  41. abject lack, and social pressure. Without an anchor for our

  42. souls beyond ourselves, each and every one of us can

  43. become an easy prey for despair. Sometime in August this year,

  44. news came out about a professor at Cambridge University in

  45. the UK who resigned and was found dead a few

  46. days later. suspected of having committed suicide as a result

  47. of accusations of plagiarism in his PhD thesis from a

  48. while ago. According to reports, he found the public scrutiny,

  49. the harsh accusations, and the constant disparaging public remarks overwhelming.

  50. And for days before his death, he could not even

  51. bring himself to leave his house. This was a man who,

  52. just a few years prior to that, upon his appointment

  53. as a professor at Cambridge, gained academic and social acclaim

  54. as the youngest ever black professor at one of the

  55. oldest and most respected institutions of learning in the world.

  56. But despair led this man to the conclusion that his

  57. only option for escape and relief was death. Though they

  58. may not have made the news in the same manner

  59. in which the professor's death did, according to the World

  60. Health Organization statistics, despair led 1,999 other individuals from across

  61. various parts of the world to the same conclusion on

  62. that day, suicide or death. Beloved, it takes a certain

  63. weight of despair to make one decide to bring their

  64. life to an abrupt end. Despair comes with an illusion

  65. of finality that makes death look like the only viable

  66. option or answer to one's circumstances. The truth and the

  67. good news, however, is that there is an answer to despair,

  68. and that answer is Jesus Christ. In our scripture reading today,

  69. The prophet Isaiah prophesies about a man who, among other things,

  70. has the power and the ability to take away despair

  71. and replace it with praise. In Luke chapter 4, our

    Luke 4 chapter mention

  72. Lord Jesus clearly identifies himself as that man. Reading Luke

    Luke 4 chapter mention

  73. chapter 4, the verse 17 to 21, it says, The

  74. scroll of Isaiah the prophet was handed to Jesus. He

  75. unrolled the scroll and found that place where this was written.

  76. The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, for he

  77. has anointed me to bring good news to the poor.

  78. He has sent me to proclaim that captives will be released,

  79. that the blind will see, that the oppressed will be

  80. set free, and that the time of the Lord's favor

  81. has come. He rolled up the scroll, handed it back

  82. to the attendants, and sat down. All eyes in the

  83. synagogue looked at him intensely. Then he began to speak

  84. to them. The scripture you have just heard has been

  85. fulfilled this very day. Amen. Beloved, what are you going

  86. through that is making the voice of despair louder and

  87. louder to you every passing day? What experiences and circumstances

  88. have held your thoughts captive, giving you no room to

  89. see the glorious possibilities that God has made available to you?

  90. Have you unintentionally given room to despair, to color the

  91. lens of your perspective of life and reshape it into

  92. an unbearable state of being that must readily and abruptly

  93. be escaped from, rather than an opportunity and vehicle for

  94. eternal gain and reward Beloved, there is good news for

  95. you today, and that good news is the person of

  96. Jesus Christ. When you feel poor and lonely, when you

  97. feel like you have been held captive with no escape,

  98. when you have lost your vision and lost sight of

  99. your hopes and ambitions, when you feel oppressed and bound

  100. in the midst of sorrow and mourning, before despair wins

  101. you over to its deception, come to Jesus Christ. Please

  102. come to the one who is able to give you

  103. a crown of beauty for ashes, a joyous blessing instead

  104. of mourning, and a festive praise instead of despair. Come

  105. to Jesus. Amen. Let us kindly take our memory verse

  106. for today. Our memory verse shall be taken from Isaiah

    Isaiah 61 chapter mention

  107. chapter 61 the verse 3. Isaiah 61 the verse 3.

  108. I will be reading from the New Living Translation. To

  109. all who mourn in Israel, He will give a crown

  110. of beauty for ashes, a joyous blessing instead of mourning,

  111. festive praise instead of despair. In their righteousness, they will

  112. be like great oaks that the Lord has planted for

  113. His own glory. To all who mourn in Israel, He

  114. will give a crown of beauty for ashes, a joyous

  115. blessing instead of mourning, festive praise instead of despair. In

  116. their righteousness, they will be like great oaks that the

  117. Lord has planted for His own glory. Amen. Let us

  118. kindly share a word of prayer. Father, we thank you

  119. for your word that has come to us today. We

  120. thank you for your faithfulness and kindness towards us. We

  121. thank you for the eternal hope we have in you.

  122. Please help us remember you and come to you even

  123. when despair comes knocking and screaming at us. No matter

  124. how desperate and hopeless our situation may be, help us

  125. to hold on to the hope we have in you

  126. until you show yourself strong on our behalf. We thank

  127. you that you have heard and answered us. In Jesus'

  128. name we pray with thanksgiving. Amen. Beloved, please come to Jesus.
