  1. I want to be with honor and joy to preach God's word to you. After nearly two years, we have finished the book of Matthew.

  2. So this morning, turn with me in your Bible for the book of Ruth. If you don't have a Bible, please wave your hand. We'll give you a copy that you can use while you're here and take one with you.

  3. How did I know what James said?

  4. Ruth is situated after the book of Judges and before the book of 1 Samuel. And that location between those two books is deliberate and ancient.

  5. Ruth 1.1 begins, in the days when the Judges ruled, there was a famine in the land.

  6. If you turn back one page from the beginning of Ruth to the end of the book of Judges, you'll find this summary of what the days of the Judges were like in Judges 21-25.

  7. In those days, there was no king in Israel. Everyone did what was right in his own time.

  8. So then the days of the Judges were lawless times.

  9. I don't know why that hasn't changed.

  10. A time when everyone did as they saw fit and did abide by God's word.

  11. It was a time when there was no king to rule and guide the people of God according to the will of God.

  12. It is therefore no coincidence that the book of Ruth, which comes right after Judges, begins with that verse, Ruth 1.1, and then ends with a genealogy that says,

  13. Boaz fathered Obed, Obed fathered Jesse, and Jesse fathered David.

  14. That's the same King David that we know so well.

  15. This is one of the main purposes of the book of Ruth, to explain the origin of the Davidic royal dynasty.

  16. That's why it's preceded by the book of Judges and followed by the book of 1 and 2 Samuel, which chronicle the rise and reign of David.

  17. We're never told who the author of the book of Ruth is.

  18. We can't know for sure.

  19. But Jewish tradition, as recorded in the Babylonian Talmud, holds that Samuel, Prophet Samuel, was the author.

  20. Some people think that Samuel was too early to have been the author of Ruth, since he died before David ascended to the throne.

  21. However, since Samuel is the one who anointed David as king in 1 Samuel 16,

  22. and it was according to Samuel's prophecy that David eventually did rise to the kingship of Israel,

  23. I personally think that Samuel is as good a guest as any.

  24. With the man who had anointed King Saul, but later said that God had rejected and has chosen David to be king instead,

  25. wouldn't he want to explain that to some people?

  26. Who is this David?

  27. Perhaps when Samuel got to meet David's family when he went over to anoint him,

  28. he got to hear this story about his ancestors and decided to pen it for the sake of Progeny.

  29. But I speculate and digress.

  30. Whether Samuel is the author or not, the apparent purpose of the Book of Ruth,

  31. which is to explain the origin of the Davidic dynasty,

  32. it would date around the time of the Davidic dynasty, which is around 1000, 1000 BC.

  33. Ruth is a beautiful and compelling love story.

  34. It is told with remarkable tenderness and artfulness and delicacy.

  35. It is a literary masterpiece about which Rudolf Alexander Schroeder,

  36. the 20th century German poet and a five-time Nobel laureate in literature,

  37. he once said,

  38. no poet in the world has written a more beautiful short story.

  39. In this book, you will find no great wars or spectacular miracles.

  40. God does not thunder from a fiery mountain, nor does he split the Red Sea.

  41. There are no awe-inspiring building projects like the tabernacle or the temple.

  42. There are no larger-than-life kings, prophets, priests.

  43. Ruth is a humble story about two widows

  44. and how God redeems them from their loss and widowhood

  45. through Ruth's marriage to Boaz and the birth of Obed.

  46. But if, for that reason, you deem that, well,

  47. nothing really important happens in Ruth,

  48. then you'd be badly mistaken.

  49. If not for the steadfast love and covenant loyalty of Ruth

  50. to her to see her husband, Nellon,

  51. and to her mother-in-law, Naomi,

  52. there would be no King David.

  53. And if there's no King David,

  54. down the line there is no King Jesus,

  55. the Son of David.

  56. The very redemption history

  57. and the plan of God hangs in the balance

  58. in this humble story of two widows and their small family.

  59. Our world doesn't celebrate women like Ruth.

  60. Think about it.

  61. From a worldly perspective,

  62. Ruth didn't accomplish very much.

  63. Some might truly dismiss her as saying

  64. all she did was get married and have a kid.

  65. Our world thinks that that's a waste of a woman's gifts and talents

  66. and that a woman can only realize her full potential

  67. when she does something other than that.

  68. This week, while I was studying Ruth,

  69. I saw a quote from a Bible scholar

  70. who criticized the book of Ruth

  71. as a, quote,

  72. pernicious, exploitative trap.

  73. Because, according to her,

  74. it promotes a patriarchal culture

  75. where women's primary goal is to bear children.

  76. That's a narrow and cynical perspective.

  77. But that's how much of our world thinks.

  78. Our society doesn't celebrate women like Ruth,

  79. but God does.

  80. God wrote a whole book in the Bible

  81. to recount her story

  82. so that wherever God's words proclaimed

  83. in the whole world

  84. that what she has done

  85. will be told in memory of her.

  86. Ruth is the only non-Israelite

  87. who has a book in the Bible named after her.

  88. Ruth is named in the very genealogy

  89. of our Lord and Savior, Jesus himself,

  90. in Matthew 1.

  91. So let us labor instead

  92. to have God's perspective

  93. and not man's perspective

  94. on these matters.

  95. I hope that's enough of an introduction

  96. to wet your appetite for the series.

  97. This is completely underrated.

  98. Oh, actually kind of related.

  99. These illustrated note-take notes,

  100. notebooks for the book of Ruth.

  101. I know some of you guys collect these

  102. and get one for every sermon series you do.

  103. Elena, of her own court,

  104. she used her own money

  105. to purchase some of these

  106. and she has some extra.

  107. So if you want some,

  108. go talk to Elena.

  109. Can you raise your hand?

  110. Yes, yes.

  111. All right.

  112. And thank her

  113. because she thought that herself.

  114. Please, let me read Ruth 1,

  115. but before I do,

  116. let me pray and ask God for her.

  117. Heavenly Father,

  118. your word is wiser

  119. and more powerful

  120. than anything we can imagine

  121. to come up with ourselves.

  122. Would you please,

  123. by your word,

  124. humble us in our pride,

  125. exalt your mercy

  126. and grace and salvation,

  127. and fix our eyes

  128. on your son, Jesus Christ,

  129. our Lord and Redeemer.

  130. Do that this morning

  131. in Jesus' name,

  132. we pray.

  133. Amen.

  134. Please stand so we can honor God

  135. as we read from his word again.

  136. I'm going to read

  137. the whole first chapter.

  138. Let's read the chapter.

  139. Let's read the chapter.

  140. In the days when the judges ruled,

  141. there was a famine in the land,

  142. and a man of Bethlehem in Judah

  143. went to sojourn in the country of Moab,

  144. he and his wife and his two sons.

  145. The name of the man was Elimelech

  146. and the name of his wife, Naomi.

  147. And the names of his two sons

  148. were Melon and Kilion.

  149. They were Ephrathites

  150. from Bethlehem in Judah.

  151. They went into the country of Moab

  152. and remained there.

  153. But Elimelech,

  154. the husband of Naomi,

  155. died,

  156. and she was left with her two sons.

  157. These took Moabite wives.

  158. The name of the one was Orpah

  159. and the name of the other, Ruth.

  160. They lived there about ten years.

  161. And both Melon and Kilion died

  162. so that the woman was left

  163. without her two sons and her husband.

  164. Then she arose with her daughters-in-law

  165. to return from the country of Moab.

  166. For she had heard in the fields of Moab

  167. that the Lord had visited his people

  168. and given them food.

  169. So she set out from the place

  170. where she was with her two daughters-in-law

  171. and they went on the way

  172. to return to the land of Judah.

  173. But Naomi said to her two daughters-in-law,

  174. Go, return each of you to her mother's house.

  175. May the Lord deal kindly with you

  176. as you have dealt with the dead and with me.

  177. The Lord grant that you may find rest,

  178. each of you,

  179. in the house of her husband.

  180. Then she kissed them

  181. and they lifted up their voices and wept.

  182. And they said to her,

  183. No, we will return with you to your people.

  184. But Naomi said,

  185. Turn back, my daughters.

  186. Why will you go with me?

  187. Have I yet sons in my womb

  188. that they may become your husbands?

  189. Turn back, my daughters.

  190. Go your way.

  191. For I am too old to have a husband.

  192. If I should say,

  193. I have hope,

  194. even if I should have a husband this night

  195. and should bear sons,

  196. would you therefore wait till they were grown?

  197. Would you therefore refrain from marrying?

  198. No, my daughters,

  199. for it is exceedingly bitter to me

  200. for your sake

  201. that the hand of the Lord

  202. has gone out against me.

  203. Then they lifted up their voices

  204. and wept again.

  205. And Orpah kissed her mother-in-law.

  206. But Ruth clung to her.

  207. And she said,

  208. See,

  209. your sister-in-law has gone back

  210. to her people and to her gods.

  211. Return after your sister-in-law.

  212. But Ruth said,

  213. Do not urge me

  214. to leave you

  215. or to return from following you.

  216. For where you go,

  217. I will go.

  218. Where you lodge,

  219. I will lodge.

  220. Your people

  221. shall be my people

  222. and your God,

  223. my God.

  224. Where you die,

  225. I will die

  226. and there will I be buried.

  227. May the Lord do so to me

  228. and more also

  229. if anything but death

  230. parts me from you.

  231. And when Naomi saw

  232. that she was determined

  233. to go with her,

  234. she said,

  235. No more.

  236. So the two of them

  237. went on until they came

  238. to Bethlehem.

  239. And when they came

  240. to Bethlehem,

  241. the whole town was stirred

  242. because of them.

  243. And the woman said,

  244. Is this Naomi?

  245. She said to them,

  246. Do not call me Naomi.

  247. Call me Mara.

  248. For the Almighty

  249. has dealt very bitterly

  250. with me.

  251. I went away full

  252. and the Lord

  253. has brought me back

  254. empty.

  255. Why call me Naomi

  256. when the Lord

  257. has testified against me

  258. and the Almighty

  259. has brought calamity

  260. upon me?

  261. So Naomi returned

  262. and Ruth,

  263. the Moabite,

  264. her daughter-in-law

  265. with her,

  266. who returned

  267. from the country

  268. of Moab

  269. and they came

  270. to Bethlehem

  271. at the beginning

  272. of barley harvest.

  273. This is God's

  274. holy and authoritative

  275. word.

  276. Please be seated.

  277. The story begins

  278. with an all too

  279. common tragedy.

  280. There's a famine

  281. in the land

  282. so that a limelight

  283. decides to up

  284. and move his family

  285. out of Bethlehem

  286. to sojourn

  287. in the country

  288. of Moab.

  289. A cross-country move

  290. which is fraught

  291. with risks

  292. their migrants,

  293. immigrants.

  294. Elimelech's

  295. initial plan

  296. was to sojourn

  297. there a temporary

  298. stay,

  299. a brief stay

  300. to outlast

  301. the famine

  302. in Bethlehem

  303. and then to move

  304. back.

  305. But one year

  306. turns to two years,

  307. two years

  308. turns to three years.

  309. For one reason

  310. or another

  311. their stay

  312. gets extended.

  313. He says in verses

  314. two to three

  315. they went into

  316. the country

  317. of Moab

  318. and remained

  319. there about

  320. ten years.

  321. Naomi

  322. has two sons

  323. take

  324. Moabite wives

  325. and indication

  326. that they're

  327. assimilating

  328. and settling

  329. down in the country.

  330. But during

  331. those ten years

  332. Naomi's husband

  333. dies

  334. then both

  335. of her sons

  336. die

  337. leaving her

  338. with only

  339. her two

  340. Moabite

  341. daughters-in-law.

  342. And verse

  343. five summarizes

  344. her

  345. for one's fate

  346. so that the

  347. woman

  348. was left

  349. without

  350. her two

  351. sons

  352. and her

  353. husband.

  354. Most of us

  355. haven't suffered

  356. half as much

  357. as Naomi

  358. at least

  359. not yet.

  360. We can discern

  361. Naomi's grief

  362. and bitterness

  363. in the things

  364. that she said

  365. in this passage.

  366. She says to her

  367. daughters-in-law

  368. in verse 13

  369. Later in

  370. verses 19

  371. to 20

  372. when they

  373. returned to

  374. Bethlehem

  375. the whole town

  376. is above us.

  377. Imagine

  378. someone

  379. from our

  380. church

  381. or someone

  382. from Boston

  383. leading

  384. and coming

  385. back

  386. for ten years

  387. and the

  388. woman of the

  389. town

  390. are wondering

  391. is this

  392. Naomi?

  393. And that's

  394. probably a

  395. loaded question

  396. is this

  397. really Naomi?

  398. Can this

  399. really be the

  400. Naomi

  401. who left

  402. town

  403. ten years

  404. ago?

  405. Is this

  406. the Naomi

  407. who left

  408. with her

  409. husband

  410. and two

  411. sons

  412. looking for

  413. better days

  414. and better

  415. future?

  416. What happened?

  417. Where's her

  418. family now?

  419. Her suffering

  420. has probably

  421. taken a

  422. physical toll

  423. on her body.

  424. Her wrinkled

  425. face and her

  426. white hairs

  427. probably tell

  428. the tale of

  429. the hardship

  430. and grief

  431. that she

  432. endured in

  433. Moab.

  434. Can this

  435. really be

  436. Naomi?

  437. Naomi?

  438. And Naomi

  439. responds

  440. curtly.

  441. Do not

  442. call me

  443. now.

  444. Call me

  445. Mara

  446. for the

  447. Almighty

  448. has dealt

  449. very bitterly

  450. with me.

  451. The name

  452. Naomi

  453. if you have

  454. footnotes

  455. in your

  456. Bible

  457. it probably

  458. tells you

  459. Naomi

  460. means pleasant.

  461. To highlight

  462. the word

  463. play we

  464. can translate

  465. that as

  466. sweet.

  467. But she

  468. says call

  469. me Mara

  470. instead which

  471. means bitter.

  472. Don't call

  473. me sweet.

  474. Call me

  475. bitter.

  476. The Almighty

  477. has made

  478. my life

  479. very bitter.

  480. That old

  481. me that you

  482. knew ten

  483. years ago

  484. is gone.

  485. My innocence

  486. gone.

  487. My youth

  488. gone.

  489. My optimism

  490. gone.

  491. My family

  492. gone.

  493. Don't call

  494. me sweet.

  495. Call me

  496. Mara.

  497. Bitter.

  498. That's my

  499. name from

  500. her life.

  501. Naomi is

  502. beginning to

  503. lose her

  504. very sense

  505. of identity.

  506. She's

  507. going to

  508. even

  509. bitter

  510. her.

  511. And pay

  512. attention to

  513. the way

  514. Naomi

  515. speaks of

  516. God.

  517. She says

  518. the hand

  519. of the

  520. Lord

  521. has gone

  522. out

  523. against

  524. me.

  525. She's

  526. not wrong.

  527. She seems

  528. to have a

  529. good understanding

  530. of the

  531. sovereignty

  532. of God.

  533. The Lord

  534. says in

  535. Deuteronomy

  536. 32 39

  537. see now

  538. that I

  539. even I

  540. am he

  541. and there

  542. is no

  543. God

  544. beside me.

  545. I kill

  546. and I

  547. make alive.

  548. I wound

  549. and I

  550. heal

  551. and there

  552. is none

  553. that can

  554. deliver out

  555. of my

  556. hand.

  557. And in

  558. Isaiah 45

  559. 6-7

  560. I am

  561. the Lord

  562. and there

  563. is no

  564. other.

  565. I form

  566. light and

  567. create

  568. darkness.

  569. I make

  570. well-being

  571. and create

  572. calamity.

  573. I am

  574. the Lord

  575. who does

  576. all these

  577. things.

  578. The Lord

  579. is in

  580. control of

  581. all these

  582. things of

  583. both well-being

  584. and calamity

  585. and it is

  586. his prerogative

  587. to do so

  588. as the

  589. creator who

  590. exercises

  591. worship over

  592. all of his

  593. creatures and

  594. creation.

  595. So she

  596. gets the

  597. sovereignty of

  598. God but

  599. her understanding

  600. of the

  601. character of

  602. God,

  603. his love,

  604. his mercy,

  605. his justice

  606. is profoundly

  607. wrong.

  608. Look at the

  609. way she uses

  610. the title of

  611. God,

  612. the Almighty

  613. in verse 20.

  614. The Almighty

  615. has dealt

  616. very bitterly

  617. with me.

  618. That title,

  619. Almighty,

  620. El Shaddai,

  621. is a title

  622. that is the

  623. key word in

  624. the book of

  625. Genesis and

  626. it's used

  627. over and

  628. over again

  629. in places

  630. where God

  631. is making

  632. covenant

  633. promises

  634. specifically of

  635. fertility.

  636. I'm going to

  637. give you a

  638. people,

  639. sons and

  640. daughters,

  641. progeny.

  642. So the use

  643. of the title

  644. here is quite

  645. cutting.

  646. Look at what

  647. the Almighty

  648. has done

  649. for me.

  650. He's taken

  651. away my

  652. husband and

  653. both of my

  654. sons.

  655. See how

  656. fertile and

  657. fruitful he's

  658. made me.

  659. Now it

  660. continues in

  661. verse 21.

  662. I went

  663. away full,

  664. but the

  665. Lord has

  666. brought me

  667. back in

  668. a day.

  669. Note the

  670. symmetry of

  671. that sentence.

  672. Naomi doesn't

  673. say the

  674. Lord sent

  675. me away

  676. full and

  677. the Lord

  678. brought me

  679. back empty.

  680. No, she

  681. says I

  682. went away

  683. full, but

  684. the Lord

  685. brought me

  686. back empty.

  687. The fullness

  688. she once

  689. had, she

  690. attributes to

  691. herself, my

  692. family, my

  693. husband, my

  694. children, I

  695. went away

  696. full.

  697. But all

  698. her loss, all

  699. her tragedy, she

  700. attributes to

  701. the Lord.

  702. Bitterness

  703. and sin

  704. doesn't have a

  705. way of skewing

  706. our perspective,

  707. okay?

  708. And we

  709. see that

  710. that's in

  711. full force in

  712. Naomi's

  713. perspective.

  714. What do you

  715. mean you

  716. went away

  717. full, Naomi?

  718. You

  719. literally left

  720. Bethlehem

  721. because you

  722. have no

  723. food to

  724. you.

  725. Because of

  726. the family,

  727. you left

  728. empty.

  729. Oh, you

  730. mean your

  731. family, you

  732. had family

  733. back then,

  734. your husband

  735. and sons

  736. then, is

  737. that what

  738. you mean?

  739. But what

  740. do you

  741. mean that

  742. the Lord

  743. has brought

  744. you back

  745. empty?

  746. How rude.

  747. I don't

  748. know if

  749. you've

  750. ever

  751. this

  752. happened.

  753. It's

  754. like you

  755. agreed to

  756. meet some

  757. friends at

  758. the gathering

  759. and you

  760. go to the

  761. gathering and

  762. your friend's

  763. calling somebody

  764. and it's

  765. like, oh,

  766. who's there?

  767. And I was

  768. like, oh,

  769. no one's

  770. here.

  771. It's like,

  772. whoa.

  773. Sorry for

  774. giving no

  775. one.

  776. Ruth is

  777. right there

  778. with the

  779. mother-in-law,

  780. right?

  781. And later

  782. in chapter

  783. four, the

  784. woman of

  785. the town

  786. will say

  787. of Ruth,

  788. your

  789. daughter-in-law

  790. who loves

  791. you, who

  792. is more

  793. to you

  794. than seven

  795. sons.

  796. That's the

  797. kind of

  798. precious and

  799. value the

  800. woman and

  801. Ruth is.

  802. She's brought

  803. Ruth back

  804. with her to

  805. this new

  806. country and

  807. yet she

  808. said, no,

  809. the Lord

  810. brought me

  811. back empty.

  812. Sorry,

  813. Ruth.

  814. Our

  815. griefs and

  816. sufferings have

  817. a way of

  818. making us

  819. either bitter

  820. or humble.

  821. When I was

  822. a student at

  823. seminary, I

  824. attended a

  825. debate between

  826. a Christian

  827. apologist and

  828. a Christian

  829. apostate.

  830. The

  831. apostate had

  832. grown up in

  833. evangelical

  834. circles.

  835. He claimed

  836. to have had a

  837. born-again

  838. experience as a

  839. high schooler,

  840. went to what

  841. he calls a

  842. fundamentalist

  843. Bible college,

  844. eventually got a

  845. Ph.D. in New

  846. Testament studies

  847. and became a

  848. Bible professor,

  849. but eventually

  850. he lost his

  851. faith because,

  852. according to

  853. his words,

  854. he couldn't

  855. resolve the

  856. problem of

  857. evil in his

  858. mind.

  859. If God is

  860. all power from

  861. all good,

  862. why is there

  863. much evil

  864. in suffering

  865. in the world?

  866. He became a

  867. very vocal

  868. and famous

  869. atheist and

  870. wrote a book

  871. entitled

  872. God's Problem,

  873. How the Bible

  874. Fails to

  875. Answer Our

  876. Most Important

  877. Question,

  878. Why We

  879. Suffer.

  880. Recounting

  881. how he

  882. lost his

  883. faith because

  884. he couldn't

  885. make sense of

  886. the suffering

  887. in the world

  888. in that

  889. whole book.

  890. That debate

  891. that I

  892. attended was

  893. on that

  894. very topic

  895. of suffering

  896. and evil

  897. in the world

  898. and this

  899. was part of

  900. the promotional

  901. circuit to

  902. promote that

  903. very book.

  904. After watching

  905. the debate,

  906. I exchanged

  907. a couple

  908. emails with

  909. him.

  910. He was

  911. academic

  912. whose email

  913. wasn't hard

  914. to find.

  915. Be warned,

  916. all you

  917. academics.

  918. I

  919. concluded

  920. the email

  921. by gently

  922. nudging him

  923. and encouraging

  924. him to

  925. reconsider the

  926. book of

  927. Ruth.

  928. Because I

  929. believed then,

  930. as I still

  931. do now,

  932. 16 years

  933. later,

  934. that it

  935. offers a

  936. compelling

  937. answer to

  938. the problem

  939. of evil

  940. and suffering

  941. in the world.

  942. And what

  943. was interesting

  944. was that by

  945. his own

  946. admission,

  947. this man

  948. hadn't

  949. suffered much

  950. at all in

  951. his life.

  952. And yet,

  953. he lost his

  954. faith because

  955. of other

  956. people's

  957. suffering

  958. that he

  959. himself had

  960. never

  961. experienced.

  962. But throughout

  963. the world,

  964. so often,

  965. people who

  966. have suffered

  967. the most

  968. find their

  969. faith in

  970. God strengthened

  971. and deepened.

  972. Our brother

  973. Daniel Jenkins

  974. once told me

  975. about a book

  976. entitled,

  977. When Sorrows

  978. Like Sea

  979. Billows

  980. Roll.

  981. It's a

  982. memoir written

  983. by a friend

  984. of his,

  985. Brad Franklin.

  986. It's a

  987. memoir about

  988. the sudden

  989. death of

  990. Franklin's

  991. wife,

  992. who became

  993. ill and

  994. died shortly

  995. after giving

  996. birth to

  997. their seventh

  998. child,

  999. leading Brad

  1000. Franklin as

  1001. a widower

  1002. and a single

  1003. dad of seven

  1004. children,

  1005. one of them

  1006. an infant.

  1007. Franklin,

  1008. as you can

  1009. imagine,

  1010. endured

  1011. unimaginable

  1012. grief and

  1013. hardship.

  1014. But he

  1015. didn't have

  1016. a crisis

  1017. of faith.

  1018. Instead,

  1019. his experience

  1020. deepened his

  1021. faith and

  1022. trust in God.

  1023. He writes,

  1024. I so

  1025. desperately

  1026. wanted God

  1027. to be glorified

  1028. and healing

  1029. men.

  1030. That didn't

  1031. happen.

  1032. But he was

  1033. glorified in

  1034. ways I

  1035. didn't

  1036. anticipate.

  1037. He says

  1038. he took

  1039. things one

  1040. day at a

  1041. time.

  1042. If you still

  1043. love God

  1044. and want to

  1045. serve him,

  1046. that day is

  1047. a success.

  1048. Whatever else

  1049. happened that

  1050. day, God

  1051. has kept

  1052. you.

  1053. That's a

  1054. good day.

  1055. such a

  1056. study in

  1057. contrast.

  1058. Extreme

  1059. pressure can

  1060. crush and

  1061. collapse rocks

  1062. and mills,

  1063. but that

  1064. same extreme

  1065. pressure also

  1066. makes diamonds.

  1067. Nathaniel

  1068. actually brought

  1069. a copy of the

  1070. book, I

  1071. think, right?

  1072. If you guys

  1073. want to borrow

  1074. it, first

  1075. come first

  1076. to the

  1077. copy.

  1078. Naomi doesn't

  1079. have that

  1080. perspective yet.

  1081. God adjusts

  1082. her perspective

  1083. by revealing

  1084. his faithfulness

  1085. and steadfast

  1086. love and

  1087. mercy toward

  1088. her throughout

  1089. the book,

  1090. and I think

  1091. she gets

  1092. there by

  1093. the end

  1094. of the

  1095. book, but

  1096. she doesn't

  1097. have that

  1098. perspective

  1099. yet.

  1100. And I

  1101. think,

  1102. I was

  1103. going to

  1104. share this

  1105. example.

  1106. The reason

  1107. why her

  1108. perspective

  1109. is so

  1110. skewed is

  1111. because she

  1112. thinks that

  1113. she doesn't

  1114. deserve anything

  1115. that's

  1116. happening to

  1117. her.

  1118. She sees

  1119. herself as

  1120. blameless.

  1121. I don't

  1122. deserve this

  1123. God.

  1124. My family

  1125. didn't do

  1126. anything to

  1127. deserve this.

  1128. And it's

  1129. that mindset

  1130. that ultimately

  1131. leads to

  1132. bitterness,

  1133. isn't it?

  1134. But her

  1135. perspective,

  1136. once again,

  1137. is skewed.

  1138. God has

  1139. specifically

  1140. stipulated when

  1141. he made

  1142. his covenant

  1143. initially with

  1144. Israel,

  1145. that if they

  1146. sin against

  1147. him, that

  1148. he will

  1149. withhold rain

  1150. so that the

  1151. land does

  1152. not produce

  1153. fruit.

  1154. You can

  1155. find that in

  1156. Leviticus 26,

  1157. 18 and 20,

  1158. and Deuteronomy

  1159. 28, 23, 24.

  1160. There is not

  1161. only a

  1162. meteorological

  1163. reason for the

  1164. famine, but

  1165. there is a

  1166. theological

  1167. reason for the

  1168. famine.

  1169. It's the

  1170. Lord God who

  1171. brings rain and

  1172. makes the

  1173. heavens give

  1174. showers.

  1175. And remember

  1176. during the

  1177. time of the

  1178. judges, the

  1179. lawless times

  1180. when people

  1181. did whatever

  1182. they saw fit

  1183. and were

  1184. following the

  1185. whims of

  1186. their own

  1187. wicked hearts.

  1188. Is it any

  1189. wonder then

  1190. that the

  1191. Lord God

  1192. struck them

  1193. with famine?

  1194. Moreover,

  1195. now you

  1196. should not

  1197. have left

  1198. Bethlehem in

  1199. the first

  1200. place.

  1201. Abraham

  1202. once sojourned

  1203. in Egypt

  1204. because of

  1205. a famine and

  1206. bad things

  1207. happened to

  1208. him there.

  1209. Isaac once

  1210. sojourned

  1211. among the

  1212. Philistines

  1213. because of a

  1214. famine and

  1215. bad things

  1216. happened to

  1217. him there.

  1218. the story

  1219. of the

  1220. patriarchs

  1221. reminded us

  1222. over and

  1223. over again

  1224. that you're

  1225. not supposed

  1226. to leave

  1227. the promised

  1228. land,

  1229. Cain,

  1230. unless the

  1231. Lord himself

  1232. tells you

  1233. to leave.

  1234. You're not

  1235. supposed to

  1236. go to

  1237. Moab.

  1238. Moabites

  1239. are the

  1240. ones who

  1241. refused

  1242. Israel

  1243. passage when

  1244. they came

  1245. out of

  1246. Egypt.

  1247. Moabites

  1248. are the

  1249. ones who

  1250. seduced

  1251. the Israelites

  1252. into idolatry.

  1253. Moabites

  1254. are the

  1255. ones who

  1256. conquered

  1257. and oppressed

  1258. the Israelites

  1259. in Judges 3,

  1260. 15-30.

  1261. They're the

  1262. ones of

  1263. whom Moses

  1264. specifically

  1265. said in

  1266. Deuteronomy

  1267. 23,

  1268. 3-4,

  1269. no

  1270. Abonite

  1271. or Moabite

  1272. may enter

  1273. the assembly

  1274. of the

  1275. Lord,

  1276. even to

  1277. the tenth

  1278. generation.

  1279. None of

  1280. them may

  1281. enter the

  1282. assembly of

  1283. the Lord

  1284. forever

  1285. because they

  1286. did not

  1287. meet you

  1288. with bread

  1289. and with

  1290. water on

  1291. the way

  1292. when you

  1293. came out

  1294. of Egypt

  1295. and because

  1296. they hired

  1297. against you

  1298. Balaam,

  1299. the son of

  1300. Baor,

  1301. from

  1302. Pethor of

  1303. Mesopotamia,

  1304. to curse

  1305. you.

  1306. Naomi's

  1307. family's

  1308. actions are

  1309. far from

  1310. innocent.

  1311. There are

  1312. several

  1313. workways in

  1314. this passage,

  1315. in the names

  1316. of this

  1317. passage.

  1318. The name

  1319. Bethlehem,

  1320. the name

  1321. of the

  1322. town,

  1323. literally

  1324. means the

  1325. house of

  1326. bread or

  1327. the house

  1328. of food.

  1329. It's the

  1330. same word

  1331. in Hebrew.

  1332. So Naomi

  1333. is literally

  1334. leaving the

  1335. house of

  1336. bread to

  1337. the land

  1338. of Moab,

  1339. the land

  1340. that refused

  1341. Israelites'

  1342. bread when

  1343. they were

  1344. coming out

  1345. of Egypt.

  1346. Naomi's

  1347. husband's

  1348. name means

  1349. Elimelech,

  1350. which means

  1351. God is

  1352. king.

  1353. God is

  1354. still king

  1355. there in

  1356. Bethlehem,

  1357. and instead

  1358. of submitting

  1359. to him,

  1360. they are

  1361. moving to

  1362. a land

  1363. that worships

  1364. the god

  1365. Chemosh,

  1366. who is no

  1367. god and

  1368. no king

  1369. at all.

  1370. It's from

  1371. Israel that

  1372. God will

  1373. raise up

  1374. a deliverer.

  1375. He will

  1376. raise up

  1377. King David.

  1378. It's from

  1379. Israel that

  1380. God will

  1381. raise up

  1382. King Jesus,

  1383. and yet,

  1384. here you are

  1385. leaving the

  1386. promise.

  1387. In Amos

    Amos 4:6–8

  1388. chapter 4,

  1389. verses 6-8,

  1390. the Lord

  1391. said to

  1392. his people,

  1393. I gave

  1394. you lack

  1395. of bread

  1396. in all

  1397. your places,

  1398. yet you

  1399. did not

  1400. return to

  1401. me.

  1402. I also

  1403. withheld

  1404. rain from

  1405. you,

  1406. yet you

  1407. did not

  1408. return to

  1409. me.

  1410. The word

  1411. return is

  1412. the same

  1413. Hebrew word

  1414. that is

  1415. sometimes

  1416. translated as

  1417. repent,

  1418. and that

  1419. key word

  1420. is used

  1421. 15 times

  1422. in the

  1423. book of

  1424. Ruth,

  1425. 12 times

  1426. in chapter

  1427. 1 alone.

  1428. That's

  1429. the point

  1430. of the

  1431. passage.

  1432. Ruth,

  1433. Naomi,

  1434. return from

  1435. Moab to

  1436. Bethlehem.

  1437. That's why

  1438. the passage

  1439. keeps mentioning

  1440. Bethlehem

  1441. five times

  1442. in those

  1443. passages.

  1444. That's

  1445. where you're

  1446. supposed to

  1447. be.

  1448. That's

  1449. where the

  1450. promises of

  1451. God are.

  1452. That's

  1453. where the

  1454. Lord God

  1455. is king

  1456. over you.

  1457. The proper

  1458. response to

  1459. famine is

  1460. not to

  1461. flee,

  1462. but to

  1463. repent,

  1464. to return

  1465. to

  1466. Yah.

  1467. That's

  1468. why verse

  1469. six is

  1470. such a

  1471. turning point

  1472. in this

  1473. narrative.

  1474. Then

  1475. Naomi arose

  1476. with her

  1477. daughters-in-law

  1478. to return

  1479. from the

  1480. country of

  1481. Moab,

  1482. for she

  1483. had heard

  1484. in the

  1485. fields of

  1486. Moab that

  1487. the Lord

  1488. had visited

  1489. his people

  1490. and given

  1491. them food.

  1492. Where

  1493. would the

  1494. Lord visit

  1495. his people

  1496. and give

  1497. them bread?

  1498. In

  1499. Bethlehem,

  1500. of course,

  1501. the house

  1502. of bread,

  1503. she needs

  1504. to return

  1505. to the

  1506. land and

  1507. the people

  1508. that have

  1509. the favor

  1510. of the

  1511. Lord.

  1512. Brothers

  1513. and sisters,

  1514. when you

  1515. fall upon

  1516. hard times,

  1517. when things

  1518. are not

  1519. going your

  1520. way,

  1521. when you

  1522. struggle in

  1523. the loneliness

  1524. of your

  1525. singleness,

  1526. in the pain

  1527. of infertility,

  1528. in the

  1529. nagging effects

  1530. of chronic

  1531. illness,

  1532. do you

  1533. flee elsewhere?

  1534. Or do you

  1535. turn to

  1536. the Lord?

  1537. To whom

  1538. do you

  1539. turn?

  1540. Do you

  1541. try to

  1542. numb yourself

  1543. emotionally

  1544. by refusing

  1545. to confront

  1546. these issues

  1547. and escaping

  1548. to substances

  1549. or to

  1550. shows or

  1551. even to

  1552. your work?

  1553. Do you

  1554. just try to

  1555. tough it out

  1556. or go

  1557. through life

  1558. like a

  1559. zombie

  1560. carried along

  1561. by your

  1562. grief,

  1563. rather than

  1564. carrying your

  1565. griefs and

  1566. sorrows to

  1567. the Lord?

  1568. When push

  1569. comes to

  1570. shove,

  1571. when the

  1572. lower

  1573. gets to

  1574. throne,

  1575. what are

  1576. the

  1577. functional

  1578. gods

  1579. in your

  1580. life

  1581. that you

  1582. turn to

  1583. for help

  1584. and for

  1585. rescue?

  1586. There are

  1587. no gods

  1588. at all.

  1589. Is it

  1590. your own

  1591. industry

  1592. and

  1593. intelligence?

  1594. Your own

  1595. resourcefulness?

  1596. Is it

  1597. your parents,

  1598. your boss,

  1599. your spouse,

  1600. your boyfriend,

  1601. or girlfriend?

  1602. Do you

  1603. take things

  1604. into your

  1605. own hands

  1606. by packing

  1607. up and

  1608. moving to

  1609. Moab

  1610. when the

  1611. Lord calls

  1612. you to

  1613. stay and

  1614. to pray

  1615. and to

  1616. wait on

  1617. the

  1618. Lord?

  1619. That's the

  1620. point of

  1621. this passage.

  1622. Even in

  1623. your bitter

  1624. circumstances,

  1625. return and

  1626. cling to

  1627. the Lord.

  1628. Recall

  1629. what David

  1630. did in

  1631. Samuel,

  1632. 2 Samuel

  1633. 24.

  1634. David takes

  1635. a census

  1636. that he's

  1637. not supposed

  1638. to take.

  1639. He's

  1640. supposed to

  1641. trust in

  1642. the Lord,

  1643. not in

  1644. the number

  1645. of his

  1646. soldiers.

  1647. And after

  1648. recognizing

  1649. what he

  1650. has done,

  1651. he says

  1652. David's

  1653. heart struck

  1654. him so

  1655. that he

  1656. acknowledged

  1657. his sin.

  1658. And

  1659. prophet Gad

  1660. offers him

  1661. three options

  1662. as God's

  1663. judgment.

  1664. Three years

  1665. of famine,

  1666. three months

  1667. of fleeing

  1668. before enemies,

  1669. or three

  1670. days of

  1671. pestilence.

  1672. And David

  1673. says,

  1674. I am in

  1675. great distress.

  1676. Let us

  1677. fall into

  1678. the hand

  1679. of the

  1680. Lord,

  1681. for his

  1682. mercy is

  1683. great.

  1684. But let

  1685. me not

  1686. fall into

  1687. the hand

  1688. of man.

  1689. So he

  1690. chooses the

  1691. three days

  1692. of pestilence.

  1693. I don't

  1694. want to,

  1695. even for

  1696. three months,

  1697. be pursued

  1698. by men,

  1699. by enemies.

  1700. The Lord

  1701. is merciful.

  1702. I will

  1703. fall into

  1704. his hands.

  1705. Give me

  1706. the pestilence

  1707. for three

  1708. days.

  1709. And he

  1710. was correct

  1711. to throw

  1712. his lot

  1713. in with

  1714. the Lord.

  1715. Because

  1716. while the

  1717. pestilence is

  1718. raging in

  1719. Israel,

  1720. it says

  1721. that the

  1722. Lord

  1723. relented

  1724. from the

  1725. calamity and

  1726. said to the

  1727. angel who was

  1728. working destruction

  1729. among the

  1730. people,

  1731. is enough.

  1732. Now stay

  1733. your hand.

  1734. How was

  1735. David able

  1736. to make that

  1737. choice?

  1738. How did

  1739. David know?

  1740. Because David

  1741. knows,

  1742. not just

  1743. theoretically,

  1744. but experientially

  1745. and viscerally,

  1746. that the

  1747. Lord is

  1748. merciful and

  1749. gracious.

  1750. because he

  1751. knows what

  1752. Hosea says

  1753. in 11

  1754. to 8

  1755. when God

  1756. says,

  1757. how can I

  1758. make you

  1759. like Adma?

  1760. How can I

  1761. treat you

  1762. like Zebulun?

  1763. My heart

  1764. recoils within

  1765. me.

  1766. My compassion

  1767. grows warm

  1768. and tender.

  1769. I will not

  1770. execute my

  1771. burning anger.

  1772. I will not

  1773. again destroy

  1774. Ephraim,

  1775. for I am

  1776. God and

  1777. not a

  1778. man.

  1779. A man

  1780. would pursue

  1781. you to

  1782. your destruction.

  1783. God is

  1784. too compassionate

  1785. and merciful

  1786. for that,

  1787. so he will

  1788. not do

  1789. that and

  1790. David knows

  1791. that about

  1792. him.

  1793. So he

  1794. says,

  1795. I'll take

  1796. the best

  1797. of us.

  1798. Hasn't

  1799. God done

  1800. enough to

  1801. prove himself

  1802. worthy of

  1803. our trust

  1804. and hope?

  1805. What

  1806. shall we

  1807. say to

  1808. these things?

  1809. If God

  1810. is for

  1811. us,

  1812. who can

  1813. be against

  1814. us?

  1815. He who

  1816. did not

  1817. spare his

  1818. own son,

  1819. but gave

  1820. him up

  1821. for us

  1822. all,

  1823. how will

  1824. he not

  1825. also with

  1826. him

  1827. graciously

  1828. give us

  1829. all things?

  1830. If God

  1831. gave his

  1832. only son

  1833. for us,

  1834. can we

  1835. expect him

  1836. to give

  1837. anything

  1838. more?

  1839. Is there

  1840. anything

  1841. more God

  1842. can give

  1843. to prove

  1844. his love

  1845. for us?

  1846. His

  1847. steadfast

  1848. love for

  1849. us?

  1850. Has he

  1851. not proven

  1852. that he

  1853. is trustworthy

  1854. and worthy

  1855. of our

  1856. world?

  1857. Can we

  1858. say,

  1859. as Job

  1860. said,

  1861. though you

  1862. slay me,

  1863. I will

  1864. yet hope

  1865. in you.

  1866. I will

  1867. yet trust

  1868. in you.

  1869. Where

  1870. our brothers

  1871. will say,

  1872. if the

  1873. Lord strikes

  1874. you one

  1875. day with

  1876. dementia,

  1877. and you

  1878. can't

  1879. remember

  1880. any of

  1881. the new

  1882. things you're

  1883. learning,

  1884. you can't

  1885. form any

  1886. new memories,

  1887. and you

  1888. can still

  1889. say to

  1890. the people,

  1891. well then,

  1892. I will

  1893. rely on my

  1894. old memories

  1895. to praise

  1896. the Lord.

  1897. Well then,

  1898. I can't

  1899. remember any

  1900. new things

  1901. I've learned

  1902. about my

  1903. God,

  1904. but I

  1905. will then

  1906. relearn that

  1907. same thing

  1908. over and

  1909. over again

  1910. and praise

  1911. Him.

  1912. Where

  1913. are my

  1914. sisters who

  1915. say,

  1916. when you

  1917. get into

  1918. a car

  1919. accident,

  1920. and you

  1921. become a

  1922. quadriplegic,

  1923. and you

  1924. still say,

  1925. well,

  1926. I cannot

  1927. raise my

  1928. arms to

  1929. worship God,

  1930. yet still

  1931. I lift up

  1932. my soul

  1933. and my

  1934. heart to

  1935. Him,

  1936. and praise

  1937. Him,

  1938. because He

  1939. is worthy

  1940. of it.

  1941. those are

  1942. diamonds that

  1943. are precious

  1944. to the Lord

  1945. God.

  1946. And so,

  1947. Naomi turns

  1948. back,

  1949. and that

  1950. brings them

  1951. to a fork

  1952. on the road,

  1953. because now

  1954. her two

  1955. daughters-in-law,

  1956. Lord Phi and

  1957. Ruth,

  1958. have to make

  1959. a decision

  1960. about whether

  1961. they will go

  1962. with her

  1963. or not.

  1964. And

  1965. even though

  1966. Naomi tells

  1967. them to go

  1968. back and

  1969. find rest,

  1970. go find a

  1971. husband,

  1972. go back to

  1973. your mother's

  1974. house,

  1975. help her

  1976. find a

  1977. husband,

  1978. ask her

  1979. to find a

  1980. new husband

  1981. for you.

  1982. They say,

  1983. no,

  1984. we will

  1985. return with

  1986. you to

  1987. your people.

  1988. It's a

  1989. hard and

  1990. cheap scene.

  1991. Lots of

  1992. mutual affection,

  1993. care,

  1994. and tears.

  1995. But Naomi

  1996. insists,

  1997. turn back,

  1998. my daughters,

  1999. why would

  2000. you go with

  2001. me?

  2002. Have I

  2003. yet sons

  2004. in my womb

  2005. that they

  2006. may become

  2007. your husbands?

  2008. Turn back,

  2009. my daughters,

  2010. go your

  2011. way,

  2012. for I'm

  2013. too old

  2014. to have

  2015. a husband.

  2016. If I

  2017. should say

  2018. I have

  2019. hope,

  2020. even if I

  2021. should have

  2022. a husband

  2023. this night

  2024. and should

  2025. bear sons,

  2026. would you

  2027. therefore wait

  2028. till they

  2029. will grow?

  2030. Would you

  2031. therefore refrain

  2032. from Mary?

  2033. See what

  2034. she's saying?

  2035. Daughters,

  2036. if you

  2037. throw in

  2038. your lot

  2039. with me,

  2040. you forfeit

  2041. your future.

  2042. there is

  2043. no prospect

  2044. for marriage

  2045. and happiness

  2046. and progeny.

  2047. Children,

  2048. if you

  2049. stay with

  2050. me,

  2051. off you

  2052. come.

  2053. Orba is

  2054. smart.

  2055. She knows

  2056. a hopeless

  2057. case when she

  2058. sees one.

  2059. So she

  2060. leaves,

  2061. she kisses

  2062. her mother

  2063. and nod

  2064. it by

  2065. and goes.

  2066. She's too

  2067. young to

  2068. throw away

  2069. her life

  2070. like that

  2071. and idealism

  2072. and loyalty.

  2073. And then

  2074. Naomi says

  2075. to Ruth,

  2076. see look,

  2077. your opa,

  2078. your sister

  2079. is gone.

  2080. Verse 15.

  2081. She has

  2082. gone back

  2083. to her

  2084. people

  2085. and to

  2086. her gods.

  2087. Return

  2088. after your

  2089. sister-in-law.

  2090. That's what

  2091. it says

  2092. in verse 15.

  2093. Ah,

  2094. now we

  2095. really see

  2096. what's at

  2097. stake.

  2098. Once again

  2099. the word

  2100. return

  2101. is significant

  2102. here,

  2103. there are

  2104. two possible

  2105. returns,

  2106. not one.

  2107. You can

  2108. either join

  2109. Naomi's

  2110. return to

  2111. Bethlehem,

  2112. to her

  2113. people and

  2114. to her

  2115. god,

  2116. or you

  2117. can join

  2118. Orba's

  2119. return to

  2120. Moab and

  2121. to her

  2122. people and

  2123. to her

  2124. gods.

  2125. The first

  2126. return is

  2127. repentance.

  2128. The second

  2129. return is

  2130. apostasy or

  2131. regression.

  2132. But Ruth

  2133. is an

  2134. ex-bornary

  2135. woman.

  2136. He says

  2137. in verse

  2138. 14,

  2139. Orba

  2140. kissed her

  2141. mother-in-law

  2142. get by,

  2143. but Ruth

  2144. clunged her.

  2145. Mentioned

  2146. this in

  2147. Charles and

  2148. Shirley's

  2149. wedding recently.

  2150. By the way,

  2151. Charles and

  2152. Shirley are

  2153. married now.

  2154. You guys

  2155. get that.

  2156. Thank you.

  2157. That word

  2158. clunged is

  2159. the same

  2160. Hebrew word

  2161. that is used

  2162. in Genesis

  2163. 2.

  2164. 2.

  2165. 24 to

  2166. describe the

  2167. marriage of

  2168. them.

  2169. Therefore,

  2170. a man shall

  2171. leave his

  2172. father and

  2173. his mother

  2174. and hold

  2175. fast to

  2176. his wife,

  2177. and they

  2178. shall become

  2179. one flesh.

  2180. Hold

  2181. fast.

  2182. That same

  2183. word is the

  2184. word cling,

  2185. to clean.

  2186. It's the

  2187. word that's

  2188. used in Isaiah

  2189. 41.7 to

  2190. refer to a

  2191. metal worker,

  2192. welding metal

  2193. together,

  2194. that one

  2195. flesh union.

  2196. Ruth is

  2197. saying,

  2198. When I

  2199. married your

  2200. son Malam,

  2201. I left my

  2202. people and

  2203. my gods

  2204. behind.

  2205. That old

  2206. me is

  2207. gone.

  2208. I may

  2209. have vowed

  2210. to Malam

  2211. until death

  2212. do us part.

  2213. And even

  2214. though death

  2215. has parted

  2216. us, and

  2217. my burial

  2218. obligation is

  2219. fulfilled, I

  2220. still have an

  2221. obligation to

  2222. you as my

  2223. mother-in-law.

  2224. I have thrown

  2225. in my love

  2226. with your

  2227. people and

  2228. with your

  2229. God, and

  2230. I am not

  2231. leaving.

  2232. For where

  2233. you go, I

  2234. will go.

  2235. Where you

  2236. lodge, I

  2237. will lodge.

  2238. Your people

  2239. shall be my

  2240. people, and

  2241. your God, my

  2242. God.

  2243. Where you

  2244. die, I

  2245. will die, and

  2246. there will I

  2247. be buried.

  2248. May the

  2249. Lord do so

  2250. to me, and

  2251. more also, if

  2252. anything but

  2253. death parts

  2254. me from

  2255. you.

  2256. That's a

  2257. marriage.

  2258. Forbearer

  2259. for worse,

  2260. for richer

  2261. for poorer,

  2262. in sickness

  2263. and in

  2264. death.

  2265. That's why

  2266. Baraz later

  2267. called Ruth

  2268. a woman of

  2269. kindness, in

  2270. chapter 3,

  2271. verse 10,

  2272. to hear the

  2273. word.

  2274. which means

  2275. steadfast love

  2276. or loving

  2277. kindness, the

  2278. same word

  2279. associated with

  2280. the Lord God

  2281. himself in

  2282. verse 8, the

  2283. word used to

  2284. describe the

  2285. eternal character

  2286. of God.

  2287. In Exodus

  2288. 34, the

  2289. Lord, the

  2290. Lord of God,

  2291. merciful and

  2292. gracious, slow

  2293. to anger and

  2294. abounding in

  2295. steadfast love

  2296. and faithfulness.

  2297. A constant

  2298. love, a love

  2299. that sticks by

  2300. you through

  2301. thick and thin.

  2302. This is an

  2303. extremely selfless

  2304. and sacrificial

  2305. act on

  2306. loose part.

  2307. Notice that

  2308. Ruth himself,

  2309. loose part

  2310. doesn't think

  2311. that she has

  2312. great prospects

  2313. back in

  2314. Bethlehem.

  2315. She doesn't

  2316. say, I'll

  2317. go where

  2318. you go,

  2319. where you

  2320. have food,

  2321. I'll have

  2322. food, where

  2323. you thrive,

  2324. I will thrive.

  2325. No, she

  2326. says, where

  2327. you die, I

  2328. will die.

  2329. For you're

  2330. buried, I

  2331. will be

  2332. buried.

  2333. That's what

  2334. awaits her

  2335. in Bethlehem.

  2336. Bethlehem.

  2337. That's what

  2338. she says.

  2339. And yet, she

  2340. says, I will

  2341. throw in my

  2342. lot with

  2343. the eye,

  2344. because the

  2345. Lord is

  2346. merciful and

  2347. gracious.

  2348. That's

  2349. exactly the

  2350. kind of

  2351. repentance that

  2352. the Lord

  2353. seeks from

  2354. all of us.

  2355. Remember,

  2356. Ruth is a

  2357. Moabite,

  2358. and the

  2359. narrator will

  2360. not let you

  2361. forget that

  2362. throughout the

  2363. book.

  2364. Again and

  2365. again, he

  2366. will refer to

  2367. Ruth as

  2368. Ruth the

  2369. Moabite,

  2370. Ruth the

  2371. Moabite,

  2372. Ruth the

  2373. Moabite.

  2374. You really

  2375. have to keep

  2376. saying that?

  2377. Can you

  2378. just, I

  2379. know I'm

  2380. a Moabite.

  2381. I don't

  2382. want the

  2383. whole world

  2384. to know

  2385. I'm a Moabite.

  2386. You know

  2387. how Moabites

  2388. came to be?

  2389. In Genesis

  2390. 19, 30 to

  2391. 38, after

  2392. Lot and

  2393. his two

  2394. daughters

  2395. escape the

  2396. judgment

  2397. destruction of

  2398. Sodom and

  2399. Gomorrah,

  2400. they take

  2401. refuge in a

  2402. cave.

  2403. And while

  2404. living in a

  2405. cave with

  2406. no civilization

  2407. around, the

  2408. daughters

  2409. realize, you

  2410. know, if we

  2411. sit here, we're

  2412. just going to

  2413. get old and

  2414. die, and

  2415. there's no

  2416. hope for a

  2417. future for

  2418. us, we

  2419. need to

  2420. have kids.

  2421. And so

  2422. they decide

  2423. to take

  2424. matters into

  2425. their own

  2426. hands, and

  2427. they get

  2428. their father

  2429. drunk, and

  2430. they sleep

  2431. with him.

  2432. And it's

  2433. through that

  2434. incestuous

  2435. union that

  2436. they have

  2437. two sons,

  2438. and the

  2439. first son's

  2440. name is

  2441. Moab,

  2442. who is the

  2443. father of all

  2444. the Moabites.

  2445. It was the

  2446. Moabite woman

  2447. who seduced the

  2448. Israelite man,

  2449. and led them

  2450. to idolatry,

  2451. numbers 25.

  2452. Yet how

  2453. gracious and

  2454. merciful of our

  2455. God that he

  2456. receives even

  2457. Ruth and

  2458. Moabite into

  2459. his kingdom,

  2460. into his

  2461. assembly.

  2462. A thousand

  2463. years later,

  2464. once again, in

  2465. Bethlehem, a

  2466. king will be

  2467. born as was

  2468. prophesied in

  2469. Micah 5, 2,

  2470. and that

  2471. king is

  2472. Jesus.

  2473. And I

  2474. mentioned to

  2475. you briefly

  2476. earlier the

  2477. genealogy of

  2478. Matthew, the

  2479. genealogy of

  2480. Jesus in

  2481. Matthew 1.

  2482. It only

  2483. mentions, it

  2484. only names

  2485. four women

  2486. besides Mary,

  2487. the mother of

  2488. Jesus, and

  2489. those four

  2490. women that

  2491. he names,

  2492. they are all

  2493. Gentiles.

  2494. All people

  2495. who had no

  2496. business being

  2497. in the

  2498. genealogy of

  2499. the Jewish

  2500. Messiah.

  2501. All whose

  2502. people are a

  2503. symbol of

  2504. sin and

  2505. shame and

  2506. evil and

  2507. injustice.

  2508. Why do you

  2509. think God

  2510. does that?

  2511. That's the

  2512. kind of thing

  2513. that people

  2514. will hide.

  2515. Well, let's

  2516. leave that one

  2517. up.

  2518. The next

  2519. one.

  2520. Why does

  2521. God do

  2522. that?

  2523. It's as if

  2524. he's inviting

  2525. us.

  2526. Where have

  2527. you been,

  2528. friend?

  2529. What is

  2530. your family

  2531. history?

  2532. What are

  2533. the skeletons

  2534. in your

  2535. closet?

  2536. What are

  2537. your sins

  2538. and your

  2539. shame that

  2540. you carry

  2541. every single

  2542. day and

  2543. you don't

  2544. know whether

  2545. you'll be

  2546. received in

  2547. Bethlehem or

  2548. not, in

  2549. the house of

  2550. bread or

  2551. not, in

  2552. the kingdom

  2553. of God

  2554. or not,

  2555. and you

  2556. come with

  2557. fear and

  2558. trembling.

  2559. And yet

  2560. when you

  2561. come, you

  2562. find that

  2563. God has

  2564. made a

  2565. way for

  2566. you in

  2567. Jesus

  2568. Christ by

  2569. sending that

  2570. promised king

  2571. and that

  2572. he died on

  2573. the cross to

  2574. pay for

  2575. your shame,

  2576. pay for

  2577. your sin,

  2578. so that

  2579. Moabites,

  2580. Gentile

  2581. sinners,

  2582. can come

  2583. and find

  2584. salvation,

  2585. forgiveness,

  2586. acceptance.

  2587. That's

  2588. the amazing

  2589. story

  2590. of the book

  2591. of the book.

  2592. So brothers and

  2593. sisters,

  2594. where,

  2595. with whom,

  2596. with what are you

  2597. throwing in your

  2598. lot?

  2599. God, it's

  2600. always a good

  2601. idea to

  2602. throw in your

  2603. lot with

  2604. the gracious,

  2605. merciful Lord.

  2606. No matter

  2607. how hard

  2608. your situation

  2609. is, even

  2610. in the

  2611. bitterest of

  2612. circumstances,

  2613. return and

  2614. cling to the

  2615. Lord your

  2616. God.

  2617. Let's pray.

  2618. O Father,

  2619. yes,

  2620. though you

  2621. slay us,

  2622. yet we

  2623. will

  2624. hold you.

  2625. No matter

  2626. how hard

  2627. our lives

  2628. get,

  2629. no matter

  2630. how

  2631. persistent,

  2632. lingering,

  2633. and longer

  2634. our suffering

  2635. is,

  2636. O Lord,

  2637. we will,

  2638. we will

  2639. rather be a

  2640. doorkeeper

  2641. in your

  2642. house than

  2643. dwell in

  2644. the tents

  2645. in the

  2646. quick end.

  2647. We will

  2648. rather suffer

  2649. and wait

  2650. on you and

  2651. still throw

  2652. our lot

  2653. in with you

  2654. because you

  2655. are not

  2656. like a

  2657. man.

  2658. you are

  2659. gracious,

  2660. compassionate,

  2661. slow to

  2662. anger,

  2663. abounding

  2664. in steadfast

  2665. love.

  2666. Would you

  2667. please reveal

  2668. more of your

  2669. character

  2670. to all of

  2671. us, your

  2672. children,

  2673. my brothers

  2674. and sisters

  2675. in Christ?

  2676. God,

  2677. if David

  2678. had reason

  2679. to throw

  2680. in his

  2681. love with

  2682. you,

  2683. how much

  2684. more do

  2685. we would

  2686. have seen

  2687. your

  2688. full,

  2689. the fullness

  2690. of your

  2691. revelation,

  2692. of your

  2693. love in

  2694. Jesus Christ.

  2695. Help us

  2696. to trust you,

  2697. to hope in

  2698. you,

  2699. through all

  2700. our days.

  2701. In Jesus'

  2702. name we pray.

  2703. Amen.

  2704. Amen.

  2705. Amen.

  2706. may
