  1. Amen. You may be seated. Kids, you're excused to your King's Kids classes.

  2. ! And if you would open up your Bibles to John chapter 16, 1 through 15.

    John 16 chapter mention

  3. I'll be preaching 1 through 15 this morning.

  4. It's on page 1072 of your pew Bible.

  5. And as you're turning there, got a question.

  6. Have you ever imagined what it would be like if Jesus remained?

  7. Physically present with us today?

  8. That He didn't leave.

  9. That He stayed.

  10. That He was with us.

  11. We'd hear His voice.

  12. We'd see His facial expressions.

  13. We'd belly laugh with Him at the dinner table.

  14. That's a glorious thought.

  15. We'd feel His hug, His embrace.

  16. The people that we love who've got questions about Jesus, we'd just bring them to Jesus.

  17. Let Jesus speak for Himself.

  18. People who have cancer, people who have mental illness, we'd bring them to Jesus.

  19. Jesus would heal them.

  20. It seems like the best possible situation would have been if Jesus just stayed physically present with us.

  21. That's what it'll be like in the new heavens and the new earth.

  22. When we will be with Him, we'll see Him face to face.

  23. So why would Jesus leave?

  24. Because in this passage that we're looking at today, Jesus is going to say repeatedly,

  25. I'm leaving, I'm going.

  26. Why would He say that?

  27. And then why would He say,

  28. It is to your advantage that I go away.

  29. It's better for you that I go so that I can send to you the helper.

  30. He's speaking of the Holy Spirit.

  31. The third person of the Trinity.

  32. It's better that I go so that I can send Him to you.

  33. What advantage is the Holy Spirit to us today?

  34. Maybe even more finely tuned,

  35. What advantage is the Holy Spirit for?

  36. To what end?

  37. To what purpose?

  38. And maybe here's a question.

  39. How do you even know that the Holy Spirit is actively at work within a local church?

  40. How do you know?

  41. Well, we've been looking at the farewell discourse for the last couple weeks.

  42. We're talking about an extended teaching Jesus gave within hours of His death.

  43. And He has been preparing His disciples for His coming departure.

  44. Not just His death and resurrection, but His ascension.

  45. He's leaving the earth.

  46. And I just want you to see in 15, 26 and 27,

  47. The ending of the passage before what we're looking at today.

  48. Jesus talks about the helper coming.

  49. And then this helper will bear witness about me.

  50. And then He turns to His disciples and He says to them,

  51. You also will bear witness to Jesus.

  52. What we're looking at.

  53. The advantage of the Holy Spirit has everything to do with our bearing witness to Jesus.

  54. We know what it's like to experience shunning for Jesus.

  55. Did you know the Holy Spirit can give you joy in that?

  56. We know what it's like to have family members who are not Christians yet.

  57. And we start to think like,

  58. Are they just beyond God's ability to save?

  59. We can become discouraged.

  60. We can become hopeless.

  61. And in this world, we can become disoriented.

  62. And the Spirit advantageously not only gives us joy,

  63. but He gives us courage and He gives us the clarity of truth.

  64. And all of that together gives us boldness.

  65. Do you know what happens when Christians who are seeking to bear the fruit of the Spirit

  66. and bear witness to Christ?

  67. Start feeling overly fearful from the world.

  68. And we start feeling like,

  69. God's not going to save anybody in my family.

  70. Or we start thinking things like,

  71. Man, maybe the world's got a point.

  72. Maybe I should just check out and check into the world.

  73. Do you know what starts happening?

  74. We start drifting.

  75. Check out, blend in, ease up.

  76. But Jesus warns about it in 16.1.

  77. He talks about it as falling away.

  78. About stumbling.

  79. So Jesus, into our witness and into the temptation to fall away,

  80. He speaks a word of advantage for us, brothers and sisters.

  81. It's better that He goes away, that He can send the helper.

  82. So here, chapter 16, 1 through 15.

  83. I have said all these things to you to keep you from falling away.

  84. They will put you out of the synagogues.

  85. Indeed, the hour is coming when whoever kills you will think he's offering service to God.

  86. And they will do these things because they have not known the Father nor me.

  87. But I have said these things to you that when their hour comes,

  88. you may remember that I told them to you.

  89. I did not say these things to you from the beginning because I was with you.

  90. But now I'm going to Him who sent me.

  91. And none of you asked me, where are you going?

  92. But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart.

  93. Nevertheless, I tell you the truth, it's to your advantage that I go away.

  94. For if I do not go away, the helper will not come to you.

  95. But if I go, I will send Him to you.

  96. And when He comes, He will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment.

  97. Concerning sin, because they do not believe in me.

  98. Concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father and you will see me no longer.

  99. Concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.

  100. I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now.

  101. When the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all the truth.

  102. For He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears, He will speak.

  103. And He will declare to you the things that are to come.

  104. He will glorify me.

  105. For He will take what is mine and declare it to you.

  106. And all that the Father has is mine.

  107. Therefore, I said that He will take what is mine and declare it to you.

  108. This morning, I want to look at three challenges to our witness to Christ.

  109. Our testifying to who Jesus is and what He has done.

  110. And see how the Holy Spirit is the advantage in these challenges.

  111. Our advantage.

  112. So, challenge number one.

  113. Being shunned.

  114. In verses 1-4, Jesus echoes what we were looking at last week.

  115. And last week, at the end of John 15, I tried to convince you of something from the Scriptures.

  116. This is what Jesus was trying to sober us up towards.

  117. That the result of abiding in Jesus and bearing fruit to the glory of God will very well get you hated by the world.

  118. And we're being told here we are to be witnesses to the very people that will hate us on account of Jesus' name.

  119. In 16-2, we read, they will put you out of the synagogues.

  120. They is another way of talking about the world.

  121. Now, the planet Earth doesn't hate you.

  122. It's sinful humanity and organized rebellion against God that will hate you.

  123. And they might not hate you to your face.

  124. They just might be polite about it.

  125. But the world, Jesus is telling his disciples, they're going to put you out of the synagogues.

  126. It's social shunning.

  127. It's a kind of ostracizing and isolating and alienating, casting out of you do not belong here.

  128. You don't fit.

  129. Back in John chapter 9, when the man who was born blind was healed, the Pharisees couldn't believe it.

    John 9 chapter mention

  130. And so they call his parents in.

  131. And in 9-22, we are told the parents wouldn't, they wouldn't even come close to confessing Jesus as the Christ.

  132. Because the Pharisees had threatened everyone that they'd be put out of the synagogues if they did.

  133. Now, today, we're not living in fear of being put out of our synagogues, are we?

  134. We fear a different kind of shunning, whether that's online, or whether that's in your family or in your workplace, your kids' athletics teams.

  135. We fear getting pushed out.

  136. We fear of being the object of ridicule of other people.

  137. We fear being shunned.

  138. And that's not all Jesus has to say here.

  139. He goes even further.

  140. He says, indeed, the hour is coming when whoever kills you will think he's offering service to God.

  141. Did you know that 10 of the 11 disciples that Jesus is speaking to right here died martyrs' deaths,

  142. proclaiming Jesus is the Christ, died and was raised?

  143. And the 11th, John, who's writing this, was apparently boiled in oil, but survived it.

  144. Why would the world want to kill the disciples?

  145. And it's not just disciples way back in the first century.

  146. We have brothers and sisters all around the world who are being killed today for Christ.

  147. By people who think that they're offering worship to God.

  148. Jesus says that is happening because they have not known the Father nor me.

  149. They don't have a relationship with the living God.

  150. They are in darkness.

  151. They are blinded.

  152. They're living in a delusion.

  153. Now, imagine if you are one of the disciples hearing this at this moment.

  154. And I'm guessing, like if you're Matthew, you turn to Peter and you'd be like,

  155. did he just say, whoever kills you?

  156. Kill?

  157. I can get shunned.

  158. But killed?

  159. In just minutes from Jesus speaking this,

  160. his disciples, Jesus' disciples will abandon him.

  161. They will abandon Jesus out of fear for their own lives.

  162. Jesus knew what would happen.

  163. But he also says in 16.1, he says,

  164. I have said all these things to you to keep you from falling away,

  165. to keep you from stumbling.

  166. And so here they, in just minutes, they will flee Jesus.

  167. But in a matter of days,

  168. there will be an incredible transformation that takes place.

  169. These fearful disciples who are hiding from those who may kill them,

  170. they are radically changed.

  171. And soon after Pentecost,

  172. the falling of the Holy Spirit upon the local church,

  173. they are transformed from being cowardly to being courageous.

  174. They go from being fearful to bold and faithful.

  175. And not just bold and faithful, joyful.

  176. I've referenced Acts 16 a few times,

  177. where Paul and Silas are in a Philippian jail cell,

  178. feet in stocks,

  179. and they're singing at midnight.

  180. Joyful.

  181. That they get to suffer for the name of Jesus.

  182. What does that?

  183. Who does that?

  184. Who changes a person's heart from being fearful to joyful in the midst of being shunned?

  185. It's the advantage.

  186. It's the Holy Spirit.

  187. The Holy Spirit is the one who does these things.

  188. So, when Jesus says in 1511,

  189. I have spoken to you that my joy may be in you,

  190. and that your joy may be full,

  191. that abiding in the vine results in fruitfulness and fullness of joy,

  192. that's taking place even when you're being shunned

  193. shunned for the name of Jesus.

  194. So, this first challenge that we're looking at here is

  195. the challenge of being shunned,

  196. being put out.

  197. But what the Holy Spirit, our advantage, does

  198. is He gives us joy in the moment.

  199. The second challenge that we face,

  200. we see in verses 4 through 11,

  201. the second half of verse 4 through 11,

  202. and that happens when we're feeling powerless

  203. and a bit hopeless

  204. when it comes to other people in our lives

  205. that are not yet Christians.

  206. We start thinking,

  207. there's just no way

  208. that they're going to become Christians.

  209. There's no way

  210. they're going to confess Jesus as their Lord.

  211. In verses 4 through 7,

  212. Jesus repeatedly tells His disciples,

  213. He is going away.

  214. Multiple times,

  215. I'm going, I'm leaving.

  216. Verse 6,

  217. He tells His disciples,

  218. I know that sorrow has filled your hearts.

  219. They're not happy that Jesus is leaving

  220. to go back to His Father.

  221. They are sad.

  222. They are fearful of being shunned

  223. of these weighty words that Jesus has said.

  224. Whoever kills you?

  225. These are weighty words.

  226. Of course they're going to be sorrowful

  227. that their leader is leaving.

  228. You know what?

  229. These words that Jesus says to them and to us,

  230. whoever kills you,

  231. going to be put out of the synagogues,

  232. we typically want to kind of run

  233. from those kinds of words.

  234. But they're really good words to linger on.

  235. Because they get at things like,

  236. am I willing?

  237. Am I willing to be shunned?

  238. Am I willing to step into hardship

  239. on account of Jesus' name?

  240. You can fill your heart with sorrow

  241. and joy

  242. even when you're feeling powerless.

  243. And so when Jesus says that He's leaving,

  244. in verse 7,

  245. Jesus reveals that someone is coming in His stead.

  246. Look at verse 7.

  247. Nevertheless,

  248. I tell you the truth,

  249. it is to your advantage that I go away.

  250. For if I do not go away,

  251. the helper will not come to you.

  252. But if I go,

  253. I will send Him to you.

  254. Who is this helper?

  255. Jesus has already referenced Him twice

  256. in the farewell discourse.

  257. He's referenced Him in 14, 25, and 26,

  258. and 15, 26, and 27.

  259. The helper is the Holy Spirit,

  260. the third person of the Trinity.

  261. Remember,

  262. I gave you a crash course

  263. in the Holy Spirit a couple weeks ago.

  264. He is a person.

  265. He is God present with us.

  266. And He comes to dwell with us

  267. the moment we believe in Jesus.

  268. He is fully God.

  269. He is a person.

  270. He is a who, not an it.

  271. He's present.

  272. He's powerful.

  273. He's a life giver.

  274. And not only a life giver,

  275. He brings peace, shalom.

  276. And what Jesus is saying,

  277. if I don't go,

  278. the Holy Spirit's not coming,

  279. so it's better that I go

  280. so that the Holy Spirit comes,

  281. He will help you.

  282. Help them with what?

  283. Well, in this context,

  284. it's witnessing,

  285. bearing witness to Jesus.

  286. And not just to the original disciples,

  287. to 21st century disciples,

  288. to you and me.

  289. The Holy Spirit will help us

  290. in our witness.

  291. He advantages us in our witness.

  292. It's good and right for you

  293. to feel like this

  294. when it comes to

  295. a non-believing relative or friend.

  296. There is nothing in and of yourself

  297. that you can do

  298. that this person will go

  299. from death to life.

  300. There's not enough force

  301. of your will

  302. to change someone's eternity.

  303. You can't be smart enough

  304. and persuasive enough

  305. to convince somebody

  306. into the kingdom of God.

  307. We bump into our limits

  308. real quick.

  309. But look what the Spirit

  310. is able to do

  311. in verse 8.

  312. And when He comes,

  313. He will convict the world

  314. concerning sin

  315. and righteousness

  316. and judgment.

  317. You can't not do that.

  318. You don't have the power

  319. to do that.

  320. Only the Spirit of God

  321. has the power to do that.

  322. When we're talking about

  323. conviction,

  324. we're talking about

  325. having an area of sin

  326. or wrong exposed in you

  327. and not just exposed.

  328. You personally become convinced

  329. that this area of wrong

  330. is wrong against God.

  331. That's the kind of conviction

  332. we're talking about.

  333. That not only is it exposed,

  334. but I'm convinced

  335. that this is grievous

  336. in God's sight.

  337. That something needs to change.

  338. It's like this.

  339. When a prosecutor

  340. is seeking to

  341. convince a jury

  342. that this person

  343. who's been charged

  344. with a crime

  345. is actually guilty,

  346. they're going to expose it.

  347. They're going to try to

  348. bring as much facts to bear

  349. in order to convince

  350. that jury

  351. that that person is guilty.

  352. What the Holy Spirit does

  353. is He convinces us

  354. of our own guilt.

  355. That something must change.

  356. convince the world,

  357. convict the world,

  358. sinful humanity

  359. and organized rebellion

  360. against God.

  361. The Holy Spirit

  362. is able

  363. to change

  364. the hearts

  365. of those

  366. who make up the world.

  367. We were once

  368. in the world,

  369. but we're no longer

  370. of the world

  371. because we've been called

  372. out of the world

  373. in order to bear witness

  374. to the world.

  375. the Spirit

  376. will come

  377. and convict

  378. the world of sin.

  379. And then Jesus

  380. unpacks that

  381. in verse 9.

  382. There's a particular

  383. kind of sin

  384. He has in mind.

  385. He says,

  386. concerning sin

  387. because they do not

  388. believe in Me.

  389. The Holy Spirit,

  390. when He comes,

  391. He will convict

  392. sinners

  393. dead in their sin

  394. who are part

  395. of the world,

  396. He will show them,

  397. expose them

  398. and convince them

  399. that they were wrong

  400. to not believe in Jesus.

  401. He will expose

  402. that in them.

  403. If you're a Christian

  404. in the room,

  405. He has done that

  406. in you.

  407. That instead of

  408. not believing in Jesus,

  409. you must believe

  410. in Jesus.

  411. because He's

  412. your only hope.

  413. He's God

  414. in the flesh

  415. who died on the cross

  416. for your sins.

  417. So He convicts

  418. the world of sin

  419. and in verse 8

  420. we read that He convicts

  421. the world of righteousness

  422. and He spells that out

  423. in verse 10.

  424. It could be

  425. a righteousness

  426. that is a false righteousness.

  427. Like what Isaiah

  428. talks about

  429. when he compares

  430. the righteous deeds

  431. of Israel

  432. to filthy rags.

  433. That could be

  434. the case here.

  435. I tend to think

  436. what's being talked

  437. about here

  438. is more positively

  439. stated.

  440. A positive righteousness.

  441. Because in verse 10

  442. we read this.

  443. Concerning righteousness

  444. because I go to the Father

  445. and He will see me

  446. no longer.

  447. With Jesus'

  448. departure

  449. there is not

  450. this

  451. physical presence

  452. and demonstration

  453. of righteousness

  454. in front of them.

  455. And so what the Spirit

  456. does is not only

  457. does He expose

  458. and convince

  459. of guilt

  460. He exposes

  461. and demonstrates

  462. the goodness

  463. of righteousness.

  464. This is what you want.

  465. Not hate

  466. but love.

  467. Not to be served

  468. but to serve.

  469. In both of these cases

  470. whether it's

  471. conviction

  472. of sin

  473. or conviction

  474. of righteousness

  475. brothers and sisters

  476. our hope

  477. our confidence

  478. is not in ourselves

  479. when we witness

  480. it's in the Spirit

  481. of God.

  482. And then we read

  483. in verse 8

  484. He's coming to convict

  485. the world of judgment

  486. and He unpacks that

  487. in verse 11.

  488. He says

  489. the ruler

  490. of this world

  491. the devil

  492. has been judged.

  493. If you remember

  494. Saddam Hussein

  495. Saddam Hussein

  496. was the

  497. dictator of Iraq

  498. in March 2003

  499. his government

  500. was toppled

  501. in Baghdad

  502. and he went

  503. on the loose.

  504. December 2003

  505. he was captured

  506. November 2006

  507. he was convicted

  508. and December

  509. of 2006

  510. he was executed

  511. by hanging.

  512. He was a bad dude.

  513. And what

  514. Saddam Hussein's

  515. being toppled

  516. captured

  517. convicted

  518. and then

  519. eventually executed

  520. it demonstrates

  521. is it took a while.

  522. It was a process.

  523. When Jesus Christ

  524. died on the cross

  525. and was raised

  526. from the dead

  527. at that moment

  528. Satan was cast down

  529. conquered

  530. dominion changed

  531. there's a new king

  532. with a new kingdom

  533. in town.

  534. But just like

  535. Saddam Hussein

  536. who ran amok

  537. for a little bit

  538. the devil

  539. is running amok.

  540. He's been toppled

  541. but he has yet

  542. to be thrown

  543. into the lake of fire.

  544. But his doom

  545. is sure.

  546. In a similar way

  547. what we're being

  548. told here

  549. is that the Holy Spirit

  550. will convict

  551. certain people

  552. in the world

  553. that this

  554. domain of darkness

  555. is doomed.

  556. That the devil

  557. his days

  558. are numbered.

  559. That this

  560. is not

  561. what you want

  562. to be living for.

  563. It gets exposed

  564. and then

  565. they're convinced

  566. and then they're like

  567. I gotta change.

  568. I gotta move

  569. from the domain

  570. of darkness

  571. into the kingdom

  572. of the beloved son

  573. and it's only

  574. through Jesus

  575. that you can get

  576. flipped.

  577. That you can get

  578. repoed.

  579. That you can get

  580. delivered from

  581. the domain of darkness

  582. into the kingdom

  583. of the beloved son.

  584. And so in all

  585. of these ways

  586. the Holy Spirit

  587. is convicting

  588. the world

  589. of sin

  590. righteousness

  591. and judgment.

  592. It's a huge

  593. a huge event

  594. when the Spirit

  595. brings us

  596. to bear

  597. in somebody's

  598. heart.

  599. How does

  600. the Spirit

  601. do this?

  602. How does

  603. the Holy Spirit

  604. convict

  605. people of

  606. sin,

  607. righteousness

  608. and judgment?

  609. Well it's not

  610. apart from

  611. the Bible.

  612. People

  613. know what

  614. sin is

  615. because the

  616. Bible

  617. defines

  618. what sin

  619. is.

  620. People

  621. know what

  622. righteousness

  623. is

  624. because the

  625. Bible

  626. spells out

  627. righteousness.

  628. The Bible

  629. people know

  630. about judgment

  631. because of

  632. what the Bible

  633. says about

  634. judgment.

  635. So the

  636. Holy Spirit

  637. in tandem

  638. with God's

  639. word

  640. convicts the

  641. world

  642. of sin

  643. righteousness

  644. and judgment.

  645. Can any

  646. of you do

  647. that on your

  648. own?

  649. No.

  650. So the

  651. Spirit of

  652. God is

  653. our hope

  654. and

  655. in the

  656. face

  657. of

  658. hopelessness.

  659. There might

  660. be many

  661. in the

  662. world

  663. but we've

  664. got one

  665. Holy Spirit

  666. and He

  667. is all

  668. we need.

  669. He is

  670. the one

  671. who is

  672. able

  673. powerful

  674. to change

  675. the human

  676. heart

  677. from being

  678. dead

  679. to giving

  680. it new

  681. life.

  682. You know

  683. to that end

  684. I'm going

  685. to shamelessly

  686. say it's

  687. not too

  688. late to

  689. sign up

  690. for the

  691. evangelism

  692. class.

  693. Right out

  694. those doors

  695. it's going

  696. to be

  697. great.

  698. That's

  699. challenge

  700. number two.

  701. When we

  702. feel powerless

  703. there is

  704. courage

  705. because of

  706. the Holy

  707. Spirit's

  708. power.

  709. The third

  710. challenge

  711. comes from

  712. being in

  713. the world.

  714. we are

  715. often

  716. challenged

  717. by the

  718. world.

  719. We can

  720. get

  721. disoriented

  722. even

  723. distracted.

  724. We need

  725. clarity.

  726. Clarity

  727. of the

  728. truth.

  729. Clarity

  730. of purpose.

  731. You know

  732. there will

  733. be times

  734. when we

  735. let our

  736. guards

  737. down.

  738. There will

  739. be times

  740. maybe even

  741. seasons when

  742. you become

  743. disoriented

  744. or distracted

  745. by the

  746. desires of

  747. the world.

  748. your heart

  749. suffers.

  750. You become

  751. dull.

  752. And then

  753. because God

  754. is so patient

  755. and kind

  756. he kind of

  757. snaps you out

  758. of it.

  759. He brings

  760. you around.

  761. I said

  762. this earlier

  763. but if

  764. the world

  765. is sinful

  766. humanity

  767. and organized

  768. rebellion

  769. against God

  770. we once

  771. were in

  772. and of

  773. the world

  774. but we

  775. are of

  776. the world

  777. no longer.

  778. we have

  779. been called

  780. out of the

  781. world.

  782. Jesus chose

  783. us out

  784. of the

  785. world.

  786. We are

  787. in the

  788. world

  789. but not

  790. of the

  791. world.

  792. We've

  793. been called

  794. out of

  795. the world

  796. in order

  797. to bear

  798. witness

  799. to the

  800. world.

  801. To bear

  802. witness

  803. to the

  804. world

  805. of who

  806. Jesus is

  807. and what

  808. he's done.

  809. and when

  810. we are

  811. bearing

  812. fruit

  813. and

  814. bearing

  815. witness

  816. it

  817. becomes

  818. a

  819. compelling

  820. witness.

  821. The

  822. disciples were

  823. listening to

  824. Jesus say

  825. this.

  826. You can

  827. imagine what

  828. they're

  829. thinking.

  830. Wait,

  831. you're

  832. leaving?

  833. Who's

  834. going to

  835. lead us?

  836. Who's

  837. going to

  838. guide us?

  839. And in

  840. verse 12

  841. Jesus tells

  842. his disciples

  843. he's got

  844. more to

  845. say to

  846. them but

  847. they're

  848. not able

  849. to hear.

  850. Not

  851. right now.

  852. Tells

  853. them

  854. he's

  855. leaving.

  856. You've

  857. got more

  858. to tell

  859. us but

  860. you're

  861. taking

  862. off?

  863. Verse

  864. 13

  865. When the

  866. spirit of

  867. truth comes

  868. he will

  869. guide you

  870. into all

  871. the truth.

  872. For he

  873. will not

  874. speak on

  875. his own

  876. authority but

  877. whatever he

  878. hears he

  879. will speak and

  880. he will

  881. declare to

  882. you the

  883. things that

  884. are to

  885. come.

  886. Just like

  887. Jesus did

  888. not speak on

  889. his own

  890. authority but

  891. only spoke

  892. what he

  893. heard from

  894. his father.

  895. So the

  896. spirit doesn't

  897. speak on

  898. his authority

  899. but he

  900. speaks only

  901. what he

  902. has heard

  903. from the

  904. son and

  905. the father.

  906. And that

  907. spirit of

  908. God,

  909. the spirit

  910. of truth,

  911. he is

  912. going to

  913. be the

  914. proxy

  915. teacher

  916. guide of

  917. the

  918. disciples

  919. upon

  920. Jesus'

  921. departure.

  922. He is

  923. going to

  924. lead them.

  925. He is

  926. going to

  927. lead us.

  928. And in

  929. verse 13

  930. he's going

  931. to declare

  932. the things

  933. that are

  934. to come.

  935. I love

  936. the book

  937. of

  938. Revelation.

  939. I love

  940. it.

  941. It is so

  942. encouraging.

  943. And it

  944. speaks of

  945. the things

  946. that are

  947. to come.

  948. Do you

  949. know it

  950. was the

  951. Holy Spirit

  952. who

  953. declared

  954. that,

  955. spoke

  956. that to

  957. the

  958. apostle

  959. John,

  960. the same

  961. guy that

  962. wrote the

  963. gospel of

  964. John,

  965. but he

  966. declared it

  967. down the

  968. line,

  969. the things

  970. that are

  971. to come.

  972. Your book

  973. of Revelation

  974. is the

  975. fulfillment of

  976. what Jesus

  977. is saying

  978. here.

  979. The things

  980. that are

  981. to come.

  982. In verses

  983. 14 and

  984. 15,

  985. Jesus says

  986. two times,

  987. the Spirit

  988. will take

  989. what is

  990. his,

  991. what is

  992. mine,

  993. and declare

  994. it to

  995. you.

  996. the Spirit

  997. will take

  998. the truth

  999. of who

  1000. Jesus

  1001. is,

  1002. and what

  1003. he's done,

  1004. is what

  1005. he's doing,

  1006. what he

  1007. will do,

  1008. and he

  1009. will declare

  1010. it to

  1011. you.

  1012. And he's

  1013. speaking to

  1014. his original

  1015. disciples.

  1016. He's going

  1017. to make it

  1018. known to

  1019. them.

  1020. We learn

  1021. from earlier

  1022. in the

  1023. farewell

  1024. discourse

  1025. that the

  1026. Spirit

  1027. will

  1028. cause,

  1029. bring to

  1030. mind,

  1031. bring to

  1032. remembrance

  1033. to the

  1034. apostles

  1035. what Jesus

  1036. has said.

  1037. And here

  1038. we're learning

  1039. that the

  1040. same Spirit

  1041. of truth

  1042. is going

  1043. to declare

  1044. to them

  1045. the things

  1046. that Jesus

  1047. has yet

  1048. to say,

  1049. but wants

  1050. to say,

  1051. even things

  1052. that are yet

  1053. to happen.

  1054. What we're

  1055. talking about

  1056. here is

  1057. the faith

  1058. passed on

  1059. to the

  1060. apostles

  1061. and to

  1062. us.

  1063. In Jude,

  1064. it's a

  1065. little book

  1066. right before

  1067. the book

  1068. of Revelation.

  1069. In Jude

  1070. 3 we

  1071. read,

  1072. Beloved,

  1073. although I

  1074. was very

  1075. eager to

  1076. write to

  1077. you about

  1078. our common

  1079. salvation,

  1080. I found

  1081. it necessary

  1082. to write

  1083. appealing to

  1084. you to

  1085. contend for

  1086. the faith

  1087. that was

  1088. once for

  1089. all delivered

  1090. to the

  1091. saints.

  1092. Once and

  1093. for all,

  1094. the faith,

  1095. the body

  1096. of doctrine

  1097. and teaching

  1098. about who

  1099. Jesus is,

  1100. about the

  1101. church,

  1102. about justification

  1103. and union

  1104. with Christ,

  1105. the nature

  1106. of the

  1107. church,

  1108. end times,

  1109. this faith

  1110. was passed

  1111. down once

  1112. and for

  1113. all from

  1114. the apostles

  1115. to the

  1116. church.

  1117. And it's

  1118. the Holy

  1119. Spirit

  1120. that impressed

  1121. upon,

  1122. declared to

  1123. them

  1124. the faith.

  1125. truth.

  1126. We have

  1127. in the

  1128. Bible

  1129. what God

  1130. wants us

  1131. to have.

  1132. It's the

  1133. Spirit

  1134. declaring

  1135. truth.

  1136. Through this

  1137. passage,

  1138. there's such

  1139. an emphasis

  1140. on the

  1141. Spirit

  1142. declaring

  1143. the words

  1144. of Jesus

  1145. to the

  1146. apostles.

  1147. One of the

  1148. things that

  1149. I'm sure

  1150. you've noticed

  1151. among

  1152. evangelicals

  1153. is you

  1154. tend to

  1155. have

  1156. kind of

  1157. this

  1158. split

  1159. of

  1160. churches.

  1161. You've

  1162. got the

  1163. Bible

  1164. churches,

  1165. word

  1166. churches,

  1167. and then

  1168. you have

  1169. the Spirit

  1170. churches,

  1171. the passionate

  1172. churches.

  1173. And so

  1174. it's either

  1175. word or

  1176. Spirit,

  1177. but that

  1178. is not

  1179. what we're

  1180. reading here.

  1181. What we're

  1182. reading here

  1183. is not

  1184. either or,

  1185. it's both

  1186. and.

  1187. It's

  1188. word and

  1189. Spirit.

  1190. it's

  1191. what the

  1192. good

  1193. doctor,

  1194. D.

  1195. Martin

  1196. Lloyd

  1197. Jones,

  1198. would

  1199. call

  1200. doctrine

  1201. on

  1202. fire.

  1203. We

  1204. want to

  1205. be

  1206. biblically

  1207. robust

  1208. and

  1209. spiritually

  1210. aflame.

  1211. And there

  1212. is a

  1213. focus

  1214. that this

  1215. truth

  1216. narrows

  1217. in on

  1218. one

  1219. person.

  1220. In

  1221. John

  1222. 16,

  1223. 14,

  1224. Jesus

  1225. says,

  1226. of the

  1227. Holy

  1228. Spirit,

  1229. He

  1230. will

  1231. glorify

  1232. me.

  1233. His

  1234. declarative

  1235. work

  1236. is going

  1237. to

  1238. spotlight

  1239. Jesus.

  1240. So we've

  1241. seen three

  1242. challenges.

  1243. What is

  1244. the advantage

  1245. of the

  1246. Holy

  1247. Spirit

  1248. to us?

  1249. Joy,

  1250. when shunned.

  1251. It's

  1252. courage,

  1253. because of

  1254. His power

  1255. to change

  1256. people,

  1257. not our

  1258. own.

  1259. And it's

  1260. truth.

  1261. Truth,

  1262. the Spirit

  1263. of truth.

  1264. And you

  1265. know what

  1266. happens when

  1267. you take

  1268. all that

  1269. together?

  1270. when you

  1271. have joy

  1272. and you

  1273. have courage

  1274. and truth

  1275. that the

  1276. Holy Spirit

  1277. is working

  1278. at among

  1279. us?

  1280. Do you

  1281. know what

  1282. that does?

  1283. It makes

  1284. you bold.

  1285. It makes

  1286. you willing

  1287. to say

  1288. things and

  1289. do things

  1290. that you

  1291. may not

  1292. otherwise.

  1293. But wait,

  1294. hold on,

  1295. time out!

  1296. How is

  1297. that better

  1298. than Jesus

  1299. being with

  1300. us?

  1301. Couldn't

  1302. Jesus just

  1303. do that?

  1304. Why is

  1305. it that

  1306. it's to

  1307. our advantage

  1308. that the

  1309. Holy Spirit

  1310. comes?

  1311. Because Jesus

  1312. could have

  1313. done that.

  1314. He does

  1315. that too!

  1316. When the

  1317. second person

  1318. of the

  1319. Trinity,

  1320. the eternally

  1321. existent

  1322. second person

  1323. of the

  1324. Trinity,

  1325. the Word

  1326. when he

  1327. took on

  1328. flesh,

  1329. when he

  1330. became a

  1331. man,

  1332. he took

  1333. on flesh

  1334. fully

  1335. and finally

  1336. and forever.

  1337. He

  1338. purposefully

  1339. limited

  1340. himself

  1341. to a

  1342. place.

  1343. Do you

  1344. know what the

  1345. advantage is?

  1346. Jesus

  1347. said,

  1348. I gotta

  1349. go,

  1350. I'm

  1351. limited to

  1352. a place.

  1353. But the

  1354. one I'm

  1355. sending

  1356. is

  1357. unlimited

  1358. by space.

  1359. He's

  1360. not bound

  1361. by a

  1362. body.

  1363. He is

  1364. able to

  1365. radically

  1366. change

  1367. people from

  1368. the inside

  1369. out,

  1370. all around

  1371. the world

  1372. at any

  1373. time and

  1374. in any

  1375. place.

  1376. Simultaneously.

  1377. Do you

  1378. know what the

  1379. advantage is?

  1380. The Holy

  1381. Spirit?

  1382. This is a

  1383. missional

  1384. advantage.

  1385. It's

  1386. strategic.

  1387. strategic.

  1388. It's

  1389. about

  1390. bearing

  1391. witness to

  1392. the nations

  1393. and not

  1394. being limited

  1395. to one

  1396. place.

  1397. It's

  1398. about

  1399. empowering

  1400. the church

  1401. to bear

  1402. witness

  1403. to Christ

  1404. all over

  1405. the world.

  1406. That's

  1407. the end.

  1408. That's

  1409. the purpose.

  1410. The more

  1411. and more

  1412. people who

  1413. are currently

  1414. dead in

  1415. their sin

  1416. and blind

  1417. to God

  1418. will be

  1419. given new

  1420. life by

  1421. the Holy

  1422. Spirit.

  1423. They'll be

  1424. convicted of

  1425. their sin,

  1426. righteousness,

  1427. and judgment

  1428. and they

  1429. will behold

  1430. and they

  1431. will believe

  1432. and they

  1433. will be

  1434. given

  1435. eternal

  1436. life in

  1437. Christ

  1438. all around

  1439. the world.

  1440. The

  1441. Spirit's

  1442. work is

  1443. unlimited

  1444. in its

  1445. scope.

  1446. He is

  1447. at work

  1448. all over

  1449. the place

  1450. and that's

  1451. the advantage

  1452. and his

  1453. aim is

  1454. always

  1455. to glorify

  1456. Christ

  1457. through our

  1458. witness.

  1459. Do you

  1460. remember that

  1461. little phrase

  1462. in 1614,

  1463. he will

  1464. glorify me?

  1465. Jesus is

  1466. speaking of

  1467. the Holy

  1468. Spirit,

  1469. he will

  1470. glorify me.

  1471. This might

  1472. be a little

  1473. over simplistic

  1474. because the

  1475. Holy Spirit

  1476. does a lot

  1477. but I find

  1478. those four

  1479. words,

  1480. he will

  1481. glorify me

  1482. to be one

  1483. of the

  1484. most clear

  1485. and helpful

  1486. statements

  1487. on what

  1488. the Holy

  1489. Spirit is

  1490. seeking to

  1491. accomplish

  1492. at this

  1493. time,

  1494. in this

  1495. unique period

  1496. between

  1497. Jesus'

  1498. first coming

  1499. and his

  1500. second coming.

  1501. He will

  1502. glorify me

  1503. and that

  1504. should put

  1505. strength in

  1506. you.

  1507. J.I.

  1508. Packer,

  1509. you might be

  1510. familiar with

  1511. him,

  1512. he's a

  1513. prolific author,

  1514. since died,

  1515. he wrote a

  1516. little book

  1517. called

  1518. Keeping in

  1519. Step with

  1520. the Spirit

  1521. and he

  1522. tells a

  1523. story of

  1524. him going

  1525. to a

  1526. Baptist

  1527. church in

  1528. Vancouver

  1529. to preach

  1530. on these

  1531. four words,

  1532. he will

  1533. glorify me.

  1534. And he

  1535. got there

  1536. for a

  1537. classic

  1538. evening

  1539. Sunday

  1540. service

  1541. at a

  1542. Baptist

  1543. church

  1544. and it

  1545. was

  1546. dusk

  1547. and he

  1548. didn't

  1549. have an

  1550. opening

  1551. illustration.

  1552. So he's

  1553. a little

  1554. panicky

  1555. and he's

  1556. walking up

  1557. this hill

  1558. to this

  1559. Baptist

  1560. church

  1561. and all

  1562. of a

  1563. sudden

  1564. it's

  1565. dusk

  1566. and he's

  1567. like,

  1568. got my

  1569. illustration

  1570. because there

  1571. on the

  1572. side of

  1573. the building

  1574. of this

  1575. church

  1576. was an

  1577. illuminated

  1578. cross.

  1579. And he

  1580. goes,

  1581. there it

  1582. is.

  1583. There's

  1584. the

  1585. illustration

  1586. I've been

  1587. looking for

  1588. because

  1589. your gaze

  1590. from that

  1591. spotlight

  1592. was not

  1593. to the

  1594. spotlight.

  1595. The

  1596. spotlight

  1597. was drawing

  1598. your gaze

  1599. to the

  1600. cross

  1601. of

  1602. Jesus

  1603. Christ.

  1604. He will

  1605. glorify

  1606. me.

  1607. So whether

  1608. it's in our

  1609. bearing of

  1610. fruit or

  1611. bearing of

  1612. witness,

  1613. the Holy

  1614. Spirit is

  1615. eager to

  1616. spotlight

  1617. Jesus.

  1618. Which brings

  1619. me to a

  1620. question.

  1621. How do you

  1622. know when the

  1623. Holy Spirit is

  1624. actively at

  1625. work in a

  1626. local church?

  1627. What?

  1628. Is Jesus

  1629. being

  1630. spotlighted?

  1631. Is Jesus

  1632. being exalted

  1633. and magnified?

  1634. Are people

  1635. bearing the

  1636. fruit of the

  1637. Spirit, which

  1638. is very

  1639. Christ-like?

  1640. Are they

  1641. boldly

  1642. proclaiming who

  1643. Jesus is and

  1644. what he's

  1645. done?

  1646. That's how

  1647. you know.

  1648. How do we

  1649. respond?

  1650. We respond

  1651. in humility.

  1652. we respond

  1653. in prayer.

  1654. And I'm

  1655. going to pray

  1656. a prayer,

  1657. and would

  1658. you pray

  1659. with me in

  1660. response to

  1661. what Jesus

  1662. has shown

  1663. us this

  1664. morning?

  1665. Spirit of the

  1666. living God,

  1667. would you

  1668. fall afresh

  1669. upon us?

  1670. Would you

  1671. fill us,

  1672. give us

  1673. joy even

  1674. under worldly

  1675. pressure?

  1676. Would you

  1677. give us

  1678. power even

  1679. when the

  1680. odds are

  1681. stacked against

  1682. us?

  1683. And would

  1684. you give

  1685. us clarity

  1686. of truth,

  1687. the truth

  1688. about Jesus

  1689. that will

  1690. give us

  1691. not just

  1692. deepening

  1693. conviction,

  1694. but deepening

  1695. boldness?

  1696. Spirit of the

  1697. living God,

  1698. would you

  1699. bear fruit

  1700. in us and

  1701. bear witness

  1702. through us

  1703. in order

  1704. that Jesus

  1705. would be

  1706. spotlighted

  1707. in this

  1708. little slice

  1709. of the world

  1710. that we're

  1711. living in?

  1712. Lord,

  1713. would you

  1714. be pleased

  1715. to gather

  1716. for yourself

  1717. men and

  1718. women

  1719. from all

  1720. different walks

  1721. of life in

  1722. our city

  1723. through the

  1724. powerful witness

  1725. of the

  1726. spirit

  1727. in us?

  1728. In your

  1729. name we

  1730. pray,

  1731. amen.

  1732. Amen.

  1733. Amen.

  1734. Thank you.
