  1. Life can wear you down. Everybody agree with that? Yeah,

  2. it really can. So that you got nothing left to give.

  3. And I'm sure that many of you will relate to

  4. this anonymous prayer request that came in. I feel like

  5. I'm in a war zone. It's just one battle after another.

  6. I argue with my wife. I clash with my kids

  7. over everything. I fight to keep my job. I struggle

  8. with our growing debt. And I'm losing the battle with

  9. my weight. Then there's the conflict inside of me. And

  10. I fight with my own fears. And I battle my

  11. own anxieties and my temper. And I'm always fighting off depression.

  12. Sometimes I'm fighting just to keep my head above water.

  13. and I'm just so tired. What does the goodness of

  14. God have to do in that kind of a situation?

  15. When I'm feeling that way, when you feel that way,

  16. when somebody else feels that way, where is the goodness

  17. of God when you're worn out? How does God lift

  18. you up when you're worn down? Psalm 23, verse five,

  19. he says, you prepare a table or a banquet before

  20. me in front of my enemies. Now, what in the

  21. world does that mean? And how can it relate to my...

  22. This was written, friends, 3,000 years ago. How could it

  23. possibly have any relevance for your life today? Well, when

  24. you understand it, it's as accurate and as relevant as

  25. the news you read or listen to every morning. It's

  26. another metaphor that needs explaining and really to unpack this

  27. for you in this message, we need to ask four

  28. questions and here they are. What kind of banquet is this?

  29. That's the first question. Second question is who are the enemies?

  30. Who are the enemies? Number three, what does this banquet symbolize?

  31. And number four, what's on the menu? And we're gonna

  32. look at all four of those, and when you see

  33. the answers to these, you're gonna realize how important this

  34. passage is to your life, how God lifts you up

  35. when you're worn down. Let's get right into it. First question,

  36. what kind of banquet is this? Well, let's just take

  37. the sentence apart word by word, okay? Now the first

  38. word is you. You, who's that talking about? It's talking

  39. about God. So I want you to write this down.

  40. In this banquet, God is the host. He's the host

  41. of the banquet. You're not a host, no human being

  42. is host. God is the host of this banquet. Not

  43. your typical party. Imagine the honor of being invited by God.

  44. If God invited you to a banquet, what would you wear?

  45. You'd probably go get your hair done. Even if you're bald,

  46. you'd go get your hair done. You'd take two or

  47. three baths. You'd stay up all night, you know, cleaning

  48. your fingernails and, well, women don't do that. You just

  49. paint them, but... I imagine they're clean under that, right?

  50. Never thought about that, you know? Guys, maybe if we

  51. painted ours, we wouldn't have to clean them. That would

  52. be very, okay. So anyway, you, God, is the host.

  53. Number two, he says you prepare. Second thing we learn

  54. about this banquet is it's well-planned. It's prepared, it's not spontaneous,

  55. it's not off the cuff, it's not a I just

  56. thought about it now, it's something that was prepared. Any

  57. of you who've had to prepare a wedding know that

  58. the banquet is probably the biggest part. It's amazing to

  59. me how little preparation actually gets spent on the most

  60. important part of a wedding. You know what it is?

  61. The vows. The vows are the most important part of

  62. a wedding. If you cut out the vows, you don't

  63. have a wedding. You have all the music, all the procession,

  64. all the refreshments and everything else, but if you don't

  65. have the vows, you don't have a wedding. And yet

  66. I can't tell you how many people who spent months

  67. and months and maybe up to a year planning the

  68. reception when it comes to vows said, whatever you think, Rick.

  69. If people spent as much emphasis on preparing their marriage

  70. as they do preparing their wedding reception, they'd have a

  71. lot more stable marriages. But he says you prepare this banquet.

  72. So it's not spur of the moment. Now, by the way,

  73. the word banquet here in the Hebrew is actually the

  74. word table. But it's not just any table. The Hebrew

  75. word here for banquet or table is shulkan. Shulkan means

  76. the king's table. It's not banquet. A portable table that

  77. you just kind of set up. It's not some Formica

  78. dinette in your kitchen. It's certainly not a TV tray.

  79. This is a giant, big, long table that a king

  80. or queen would have. It's a big, serious table. This

  81. word is used mostly in the Bible related to king's tables,

  82. and sometimes it's used to refer to the table of

  83. showbread in the Bible. in the tabernacle. So this is

  84. a table that's special, significant, and sacred. You, God's the host, prepare,

  85. it's well planned. He says, you prepare a banquet for me.

  86. Now that means, number three, write this down, I am

  87. the guest of honor. In this banquet, you are the

  88. guest of honor. The whole banquet is prepared for you,

  89. not for somebody else, and you just get to come,

  90. This banquet is in your honor, it's for you. It

  91. is all about you in this particular situation. Then he says,

  92. you prepare a banquet for me in front of. Next

  93. thing we learn about it is it's a public, not

  94. secret event. What God's gonna do here, he's planning a party,

  95. he's planning a party for you, it's specifically for you,

  96. and it is in public. He does it intentionally in

  97. front of people. It's not secret. God wants everyone to

  98. see how he's going to honor you. And then he says,

  99. you prepare a banquet for me in front of my enemies.

  100. Now that's a little catch. You weren't expecting that. You'd say,

  101. prepare a banquet for me and my friends. Prepare a

  102. banquet for me and the dignitaries you want advice. He says, no,

  103. you prepare a banquet for me in front of my enemies.

  104. So here's the last thing I want you to write

  105. it down. It's on a battlefield. This is a banquet

  106. on a battlefield. We're gonna come back and talk about

  107. that and see the reasons in just a minute. But

  108. the kind of banquet it is, God's the host, it's

  109. well planned, it's thought out, you're the guest of honor,

  110. it's in public, God wants to honor you not secretly

  111. but publicly, and it's actually on a battlefield. And your

  112. enemies are there watching this. Now the second question we

  113. ask is, well, what are the enemies? Who are the enemies?

  114. You say, well, I don't have any enemies. You ever

  115. felt picked on by anybody? You ever felt put down?

  116. You ever felt rejected? You ever felt criticized? Who are

  117. the enemies or what are the forces that oppose you?

  118. Let me put it this way. What are the forces

  119. that oppose God's best in your life? Well, the Bible

  120. says that you have three fundamental enemies. And you need

  121. to know them. Sun Tzu said in The Art of War,

  122. he said the first law of winning a battle is

  123. know your enemy. Know your enemy. Paul says in 2

  124. Corinthians chapter two, he says, we're not ignorant of the

  125. way Satan works and his tactics. He says, and I

  126. don't want you to be ignorant. You need to know

  127. who your enemy is. Can you name your three enemies? Well,

  128. let's look at them. Here's what the Bible says. Number one,

  129. the first enemy is the world around me. The Bible

  130. has a lot to say about this. The world around me,

  131. no matter what you think, no matter what you say,

  132. no matter what you do, somebody's going to oppose it.

  133. Have you figured that one out? Well, if I could

  134. just be perfect and everybody would like me, Jesus was

  135. perfect and they nailed him to a cross. Even if

  136. you were perfect, somebody's not going to like you. And

  137. it's impossible, no matter what you think, people gonna oppose you.

  138. And if evil doesn't fight you, it means you're not

  139. doing good. Hate to tell you that. If evil does

  140. not oppose you, you feel no opposition from evil, it

  141. means you're heading the same direction. That's not a good sign.

  142. Jesus said it like this, beware when all men speak

  143. well of you. You tell what a person's like, not

  144. just by their friends. You can tell a lot about

  145. a person's character, but who's their enemy? And that'll tell

  146. you a lot about the kind of person they are,

  147. who their friends are, but also who their enemies are.

  148. So you've got opposition everywhere. You can have opposition, of course,

  149. at work, people who don't like you, people who are

  150. gunning for your job, people who are trying to get

  151. you demoted or they don't like because you're a believer

  152. or whatever. Maybe they just think you dress funny. But

  153. their enemies are, you'll see opposition at work. Do you

  154. remember the opposition you used to have at school, how

  155. people would pick on you? And that wasn't any fun.

  156. You can have opposition in the neighborhood, you can have

  157. opposition from relatives. Now don't look at them, but you

  158. know who I'm talking about. By the way, did you

  159. know what the first prayer in the Bible is? The

  160. first recorded prayer in the Bible. It's Genesis chapter 32,

    Genesis 32 chapter mention

  161. and it is a prayer for protection against an angry

  162. family member. Genesis 32 verse 11, look here on the screen.

    Genesis 32:11

  163. Jacob prays to God, save me from my brother Esau,

  164. I'm afraid he'll attack me. Now, Jacob had cheated his

  165. brother out of his birthright and he'd run off and

  166. years later he's coming back and he knows he's gonna

  167. run into his brother and he says in the rest

  168. of the verse, I'm afraid my brother's gonna kill me,

  169. my family, my kids, my wife. The very first prayer

  170. in the Bible is a guy praying about protection from

  171. his own family. I don't wanna get into this, but

  172. I wanna just pause here and say, some of you

  173. have been abused by family members. I'm sorry. I'm sorry.

  174. Physically abused, verbally abused, sexually abused, I'm sorry. Read the statistics.

  175. It's not that uncommon. A lot of people get abused

  176. growing up by family members. Look at the next verse,

  177. what the Bible says. Jesus said, in this world, you

  178. will have tribulation. Circle will have. You'll have tribulation. Not

  179. you might have, you're gonna have it. Count on it.

  180. You're gonna have tribulation and trials. You're gonna have distress

  181. and frustration, but take heart because I have overcome the world.

  182. He says, don't be shocked. Don't be shocked when people

  183. oppose you in the world. Don't be shocked when you

  184. have troubles and tribulations and trials and people test you,

  185. people poke you, people prod you. Don't be surprised by this.

  186. It's gonna happen in life. Why? You ever thought about it?

  187. Why is life such a battle? Why is life so hard?

  188. And the answer is because the world's value system is anti-God.

  189. And anything that stands up for God is gonna get

  190. challenged one way or the other. You see, this world

  191. worships itself. The world worships creation and all the things

  192. God created and does not worship the creator. And whenever

  193. you have that, you're gonna have abuse, you're gonna have misuse,

  194. you're gonna have perversion, all kinds of things. Look at

  195. the next verse, 1 John chapter two. Talks about this

  196. first enemy in your life, That is the world. Now,

  197. it says, do not love the world. Stop right there.

  198. You say, wait a minute, isn't this a contradiction? Because

  199. the Bible says, God so loved the what? World. Okay,

  200. so which is it? Here we're clearly told, do not

  201. love the world, and yet the Bible says, God so

  202. loved the world that he gave his son. The difference

  203. is in the meaning of the word world. We are

  204. to love the people of the world and hate the

  205. world's value system. When the Bible says God so loved

  206. the world, he didn't love the sin in it. He

  207. didn't love the abuse in it. He didn't love the

  208. misuse of his gifts in it. God so loved the world,

  209. he loved the people. We are to love the people

  210. and hate the world's value system. You know what the

  211. problem is? We do the exact opposite. We hate the

  212. people and we love the value system. We love materialism.

  213. We love hedonism. We love secularism. We love I gotta

  214. be me. I'm gonna do it my way. It's all

  215. about me. Look at the rest of the verse. Do

  216. not love the world or all the things, that's materialism,

  217. in the world. If you love what the world offers,

  218. it shows the Father's love, the word love's missing there,

  219. the Father's love is not in you. For everything the

  220. world values, and here's the list of the world's values.

  221. There are three big ones. Doing anything that feels good

  222. and indulging every lust. That's called the lust of the flesh.

  223. Being driven by greed to always want more. That's called

  224. the lust of the eyes. And the prideful pretending to

  225. impress others. That's called the pride of life. These things,

  226. they do not come from God. The world and all

  227. the things people think are important are actually passing away.

  228. But the person who does what God says will live forever.

  229. So he says your first enemy is actually the world's

  230. value system. What everybody thinks is so important they're given

  231. statues to, you shouldn't care about. Because that's not what

  232. life is all about. It's not about having more, you know,

  233. looking good, feeling good, and having the goods. He says

  234. all these things, and so what they're natural, natural does

  235. not necessarily mean moral. Natural doesn't necessarily mean moral. I mean,

  236. it's natural if somebody hurts you, you wanna hurt them back.

  237. That's the most natural thing in the world. Is it right? No.

  238. Do you punch me in the face? My natural reaction

  239. is to punch you back. And sometimes I might wanna

  240. feel naturally to punch you first. Though it's natural doesn't

  241. mean it's moral. Lying's natural. I was watching a show

  242. the other day, it said kids learn to start lying

  243. through their eyes and things as early as two years old,

  244. that by five years old, 50% of kids know how

  245. to lie habitually, and by seven years old, 100% of

  246. kids know how to lie habitually. Lying's very, very natural.

  247. Is it right? No. So it's not moral. Sex is natural.

  248. Sex with everyone. Well, the animals do sex with everybody.

  249. Is it moral? No. Natural doesn't necessarily mean moral. Natural

  250. can sometimes be toxic. Arsenic's a natural subject. You can

  251. drink it and it'll kill you. You can see a

  252. mushroom out in the garden and say, wow, natural food,

  253. and you eat it and die. Just because something natural

  254. doesn't mean it won't harm you, it won't kill you.

  255. What am I saying? Is it because of the world's

  256. value system when a gift from God, a good gift

  257. from God, And everything in life was a gift from God.

  258. It all comes from God. When a gift becomes a God,

  259. it becomes destructive. Water is a gift from God. Too

  260. much water will drown you. Fire is a gift from God.

  261. Fire in the fireplace, in the right place, will warm

  262. your house. Fire out of control will burn down a

  263. city and even hundreds of thousands of acres. Sex is

  264. a gift from God. Out of control, not used in

  265. God's parameters, it becomes destructive. And any time we take

  266. God's gift and we abuse it and we misuse it

  267. or we pervert it, then it becomes destructive. Sex is

  268. not dirty, it's holy. It's holy. And that's why God

  269. says there are parameters for it. So the first enemy

  270. is the world around you. And you live with it

  271. all the time, but here's the point. Just as God

  272. can take a fish and put him in the ocean

  273. and that ocean is filled with salt water, it's briny.

  274. When you catch a sea bass or a ling cod

  275. or a rock cod or any kind of fish out

  276. of the ocean, and you bring them in and you

  277. skin them and then you cook them, when you cook them,

  278. the first thing you have to do is put salt

  279. on them. Why in the world do you have to

  280. do that? They've lived in salt their entire life. Shouldn't

  281. they be briny? But saltwater fish don't have salt in them. Why?

  282. They're not isolated from their culture. They're not imitating their culture.

  283. They're insulated in their culture. And if God can take

  284. a fish and keep him in a briny ocean his

  285. entire life, and then you have to put fish salt

  286. on him to eat him, God can keep you in

  287. a world with the wrong value system without him infecting you.

  288. Does that make sense? If you trust him. So that's

  289. your first enemy, the world. Second enemy, first is the

  290. world around you. The second is Satan is against me.

  291. The world is around me and the second is Satan

  292. is against me. The Bible calls Satan your adversary, your accuser.

  293. He calls the liar the father of lies, your foe,

  294. your enemy. In fact, the Bible says that Satan would

  295. like to kill you. Very clear. The Bible says the

  296. thief comes to kill and to steal and to destroy.

  297. Satan wants to kill you, steal your identity and destroy

  298. your life. Why? Why? Well, he doesn't care anything about you.

  299. But the reason he wants to kill you and destroy

  300. you is because God loves you. And because God loves you,

  301. Satan wants to hurt God. The easiest way to hurt

  302. me would be hurt my children or my grandchildren. And

  303. so Satan doesn't care anything about you. You're nothing to him.

  304. You mean nothing to him. But because God loves you,

  305. he wants to destroy you. He wants to mess you up.

  306. He wants to try to hurt God that way. Now

  307. the Bible says in 1 Peter 5, 7, be careful,

  308. watch out for attacks from the devil who is your

  309. great enemy. And the Bible says you should be aware

  310. of his tactics. So I'm going to give them to

  311. you right now. Somewhere on the outline, I didn't provide

  312. a place for this. Let me give you the tactics

  313. that Satan uses. Number one, the number one way Satan

  314. uses in your life is this, deception and suggestion. Deception

  315. and suggestion. Deception and suggestion. He tells you lies. He's

  316. suggesting them to you all the time. And he puts

  317. thoughts in your mind. When God puts a thought in

  318. your mind, it's inspiration. When the devil puts a thought

  319. in your mind, it's called temptation. Satan works in your

  320. life through the power of suggestion. And from the very beginning,

  321. he will question God's word. Did God really say don't

  322. do this? Deception and suggestion. The second tool he uses

  323. is is distraction and division. And if Satan can't get

  324. you to believe one of his lies, he'll just get

  325. you busy and he'll get you distracted from the main

  326. things in life. It's so easy, we have good forgetters

  327. that the stuff you know to do that's right and

  328. good and healthy and affirming in your life and affirming

  329. in the lives of other people, he'll just get you distracted.

  330. And if he can't get you distracted, he'll get you divided.

  331. With divided loyalties here and there, The number one tool

  332. Satan uses in churches is division in the church, and

  333. this group of people gets mad at that group of people.

  334. So there's deception and suggestion. There's distraction and division. And

  335. the third main tool he uses is discouragement and persecution.

  336. He just wants to get you down. So he'll have

  337. people say mean things to you. And Satan can use anybody.

  338. He can use me. He can use you. If he

  339. puts a thought in your mind and you fall for it,

  340. you just got used. You were a tool. You were

  341. a tool. And you could say the wrong thing and

  342. you didn't even think about it, but it was thought,

  343. thought came through your mind and it just came out

  344. your mouth. And he uses discouragement and persecution. More Christians

  345. are dying today for their faith than in any other

  346. time in history. You may not know that. Last year,

  347. there are, I think, 25 million people martyred for their

  348. faith around the world. We don't, the society and news

  349. media pays very little attention to it, except they have

  350. some in the Middle East. But that's just one place

  351. where it happens. It happens, Hindu violence against Christians in

  352. India and Buddhist violence against Christians in Asia and many,

  353. many other places. When you have people attacking you, you

  354. need to realize it's not really them. Look at the

  355. next verse, Ephesians 6, 12. Our fight is not really

  356. against people on earth, but against the forces of evil

  357. in the spiritual world. So we have the world around

  358. us and we have Satan against us. That's the big

  359. two enemies. But you got one more and this one's

  360. your biggest enemy of all. And it's not the world

  361. around me or Satan against me, it's my old nature

  362. inside me. My old nature inside me is my biggest enemy.

  363. And your old nature inside you is your biggest enemy.

  364. I mean, do you always do the right thing that

  365. you intend to do? I'll say that again. You don't

  366. have to answer. Do you always do the right thing

  367. that you intend to do? Of course not. I don't.

  368. You don't. Who caused that? The world? No. The devil? No.

  369. The devil doesn't have to bother with most of us

  370. most of the time. because we're so caught up in

  371. our old nature. Paul says it like this in Romans 7.

  372. He wrote an entire chapter in the Bible about the

  373. battle in your mind, the battle against your old ways,

  374. your old habits, your old patterns. After you become a believer,

  375. you get a new heart, you get a new identity,

  376. but then you still have that battle. And Paul says

  377. in Romans 7 23, inside me, my old nature is

  378. at war with my new mind. which wants to do

  379. what's right. Says, you know, I wanna do the right thing.

  380. You wanna do the right thing. You're obviously here at

  381. church this weekend. You want to do the right thing.

  382. Inside me, my old nature is at war with my

  383. new mind. I get a new mind when I become

  384. a believer, which wants to do what's right. But my

  385. old self fights back and keeps me struggling with my

  386. old patterns and sins. There's a very famous story of

  387. a well-known Navajo chief who became a Christian leader on

  388. the Navajo reservation and he was explaining to his people

  389. one day about this battle between your old nature and

  390. new nature and he says, in my life, he said,

  391. it's like two dogs arguing over a piece of meat,

  392. the red dog and the black dog arguing and they're

  393. fighting and there's this battle going on inside my mind

  394. and one of the young men asked him, he said, well, chief,

  395. which dog wins? He says, the one I feed the most.

  396. It's the one you give expression to in your life.

  397. The longer I live, the more I realize that I

  398. am my biggest enemy. Now let's go back to this Psalm.

  399. Everything I just said is all set up for the

  400. meaning of this verse. You prepare a banquet for me

  401. in front of my enemies. You prepare for me. A

  402. banquet for me in the presence of my enemies. Now

  403. what does that mean? Well let's talk about for just

  404. a minute what is the meaning of the banquet. In

  405. the Bible, a banquet almost always represents one of two things,

  406. either fellowship or approval. And I wanna teach you two

  407. very true statements about your life that when you're going

  408. through times when you feel like I'm getting beat up

  409. right now, I got a lot of enemies. I got

  410. a lot of forces coming against me, financial forces, I'm

  411. in a financial battle, I'm in a health battle, I'm

  412. in a marriage battle, I'm in a relationship battle, I'm

  413. in a business battle. You need to hold on to

  414. these two things because it's in the battle, the Bible says,

  415. that God prepares the banquet for you. And what does

  416. that banquet represent? Number one, write this down. First, the

  417. banquet teaches us that God wants and welcomes fellowship with me.

  418. God wants and welcomes fellowship with me. He prepares this

  419. banquet for you when you are under attack. Psalm chapter five,

  420. verse five, or chapter five, verse 11, says this. You

  421. welcome us with open arms when we run for cover

  422. This is talking about when you're in a battle. You

  423. welcome us with open arms when we run for cover

  424. to you. Let the party last all night. Stand guard

  425. over our celebration. I love that in the Message translation.

  426. He says, okay, you're gonna have a party in the

  427. middle of a battle, and you're gonna have somebody stand guard,

  428. and when we run to you for cover, I'm being

  429. beat up right now. I need you to lift me

  430. up when I'm worn down, Lord. He's talking about a

  431. party in a combat zone, a banquet on a battlefield. Now,

  432. those of you who've been in the service know that

  433. in combat, there aren't any banquets on the battlefield. There

  434. are no tables on the battlefield. A soldier who's in

  435. a combat zone is gonna eat MREs, meals ready to eat.

  436. They're cold, they're vacuum packed, and they're tasteless. And when

  437. you're in the battle, when you're in the heat of

  438. the battle, they're not calling you into the mess hall

  439. to eat. When you're in the heat of the battle,

  440. you have no table, you have no banquet. It's a

  441. quick bite of a meal ready to eat, and then

  442. you're back into the battle. That's the way the world operates.

  443. But with God, it's different. I want you to imagine

  444. a scene. Let's imagine that you are a soldier, let's

  445. just say in the Middle Ages, serving some king, the

  446. most powerful king in Europe, and you're in a battle,

  447. maybe it's one of the Crusades or something like that,

  448. and you're in a heated battle and you're tired and

  449. you're sweaty and you're scared and you're hungry. And all

  450. of a sudden, without any explanation, the captain of your

  451. division comes in and pulls you off the front line.

  452. You have no idea why you're being pulled off the

  453. front line in the heat of battle. And so you

  454. began to walk back and 500 yards back from the

  455. front line, the king has arrived. And the king has

  456. arrived and they have set up a huge banquet tent.

  457. I mean, you know, like one of those things with

  458. the turrets and everything that's just so pretty in the

  459. Middle Ages. And they've set up this huge banquet tent

  460. with a full feast and they have transported the king's

  461. table to the battlefield. Somehow they got it out of

  462. the castle and they put it on a wagon and

  463. they brought it hundreds, maybe a thousand miles to this battlefield.

  464. And the king's actual table is there and they lay

  465. out this huge feast with your favorite foods. And you

  466. look on that table, there's all your favorite foods, all

  467. that home cooking. And the king has stationed, let's say

  468. 500 guards around that table to protect you. And then

  469. the king explains to you this, he says, see all

  470. this food, this banquet, this is for you and me,

  471. nobody else. It's a banquet in the middle of a battlefield.

  472. You've been pulled off the line and they've done all

  473. this great expense, and the king says, this banquet, it's

  474. your favorite food. I did a little research. I looked

  475. it all up, and I want you to eat with

  476. all you want because I just did it for you.

  477. I wanted to hang out with you. The king says

  478. this to you. I wanted to hang out with you.

  479. So go ahead and eat all you want. You're unhurried,

  480. you're unworried, you're protected. There's no way the enemy's gonna

  481. get in here. They're out there on the battlefield. You

  482. can hear them, but they're that far away. And when

  483. you're beat up and you're away from home, there's nothing

  484. like a home-cooked meal. And there's comfort in that comfort food.

  485. And then just in case, everybody doesn't know what's going on,

  486. the king wants everybody to know what he's doing for you.

  487. You are the guest, this is your banquet, it's for you.

  488. And the king raises a banner. And this banner says,

  489. it's so big that everybody on the battlefield can see it.

  490. It says, I love, and it has your name. I

  491. love your name. And put your name up there. And

  492. I am proud of them. You realize that's exactly what

  493. this verse is saying God does for you when you

  494. are under attack. Look at this verse on the screen.

  495. Songs of Solomon 2, 4. He brings me to his

  496. banquet table and his banner over me is love. That's

  497. how much God loves you. Even if nobody else had

  498. lived on this planet, Jesus Christ still would have come

  499. and died for you because he loves you that much.

  500. This banquet is not for anybody else. It's for you

  501. and the king only. because he wants fellowship with you.

  502. He wants to hang out with you. The single most amazing, unbelievable,

  503. hard to believe truth in the universe is this, that

  504. God would wanna spend time with me. That God would

  505. wanna spend time with you, but he does. If I

  506. told you that tomorrow morning at 5 a.m. you could

  507. meet with the top 10 leaders of the world, the

  508. Prime Minister of England, the President of the United States,

  509. the President, Chairman of China and on and on and on.

  510. And they wanted to meet with you. You wouldn't even

  511. go to bed tonight. You'd stay up all night getting

  512. ready and picking out the best clothes and you'd get

  513. so ready because they wanted to meet with you? Yeah.

  514. I'm telling you, God wants to do that with you

  515. every day of your life. and you don't have to

  516. get dressed. It's called the quiet time where you spend

  517. time alone with him. God says, I just wanna hang

  518. out with you. God wants fellowship with you. If God

  519. hadn't wanted fellowship with you, he wouldn't have sent Jesus

  520. Christ to die on the cross. The whole reason Jesus

  521. came to die on the cross is so that you

  522. could have fellowship with God. If God didn't want fellowship

  523. with you, he wasted Jesus' death because he's the bridge.

  524. that paid for all your sins and made that kind

  525. of fellowship with you. God wants and he welcomes fellowship

  526. with me. You know what that's called? Okay, now we're

  527. talking about this the other day. It's hospitality. It's one

  528. of the top values of Saddleback Church. We want people

  529. to feel welcomed and wanted at Saddleback Church. That's called hospitality.

  530. When you welcome people and you want people That's called hospitality.

  531. And over in the Romans chapter 15, it says, warmly

    Romans 15 chapter mention

  532. welcome others into the church just as Christ warmly welcomed you.

  533. That's hospitality. But God is saying this first with you.

  534. I'm warmly welcoming you into this banqueting tent and I've

  535. gone to all his expense and I brought the feast

  536. to you here on the banqueting table on the field

  537. of battle. And he raises this sign and he brings

  538. me to the banqueting table and he says, this banner

  539. over me is love. That's how much God loves you.

  540. Now imagine if you're the enemy. They see all this

  541. going on. They see you pulled off the front line.

  542. They see you walk up to the king. The king

  543. embraces you. The king's got a giant banquet tent. He's

  544. got a feast laid out. The flaps are up. Everybody

  545. can see all that food there. They're hungry and sweaty

  546. and tired too. And the enemy is so dumbstruck by

  547. this scene that they all just stop fighting and stare.

  548. They just stop fighting and stare at you. You know,

  549. one of the things I've learned is that When God

  550. wants to bless your life, all the critics in the

  551. world can't stop it. You prepare a table before me

  552. in the presence of my enemies and they can't do squat.

  553. They may want to criticize you, they may want to

  554. bait you, debate you, debase you, reject you, lie about you,

  555. slander you, but you can't stop it when you have

  556. the favor of the king on your life. You prepare

  557. a table before me in the presence of mine enemies

  558. and they are dumbfounded and they just watch you get

  559. blessed and blessed and blessed and blessed because his banner

  560. over me is love. It's all because of his love.

  561. Nothing I deserve, nothing you deserve. They can't stop it,

  562. you can't stop it. Today, right now in your life,

  563. in the middle of all your battles, God is inviting

  564. you to a banquet. Look at this verse. The Bible

  565. says in Job 36, verse 16, God is gently calling

    Job 36:16

  566. you from the jaws of distress. What a beautiful picture.

  567. From the jaws of distress to an open place of

  568. freedom where he has set your table full of the

  569. best food. Job's saying the exact same thing David says

  570. in Psalm 23. He says, God is gently calling you.

  571. He's wooing you. He is coaxing you. He's saying, come on,

  572. I want to have fellowship with you. How could you

  573. not love a God like that? I want to get

  574. to know you. I want you to get to know me.

  575. I want to have fellowship with you. I want to

  576. eat together. He's calling you. And where is he calling

  577. you from? From the battle you're in, from the jaws

  578. of Remember the movie Jaws? What's chewing on you right now?

  579. What's eating you up? God is wooing you, calling you

  580. out of the jaws of distress. I don't know what's

  581. chewing on you right now, but that battle, he's saying,

  582. come off the front line and come to the party.

  583. The kingdom of God all through the New Testament is

  584. portrayed as a banquet. God says, Come to the party.

  585. Come to the party. It's all about what I'm doing

  586. for you. And others may criticize you, attack you, demean you,

  587. dismiss you, whatever. But God wants to hang out with you.

  588. And he's put an awful lot of prep in honoring you.

  589. He prepared this table. He prepared this banquet. He went

  590. to great expense to make possible fellowship with him. That's

  591. the first truth we learned. The second thing the banquet

  592. symbolizes is this, and I love this one too. God

  593. wants to bless me to show the world his goodness.

  594. That's what this verse teaches. God wants to bless me

  595. in order to show the world his goodness. That's why

  596. it's not in secret. That's why it's in front of people,

  597. in front of even my enemies. I am a trophy

  598. of God's grace. You are a trophy of God's grace.

  599. I am exhibit A of the goodness of God. God's

  600. goodness on display that he used flawed, frail people with

  601. all kinds of faults and flaws and flubs and motivations

  602. and things we don't even understand. God only used perfect people.

  603. You've heard me say it a thousand times. Nothing would

  604. get done. He only uses. He only uses imperfect people.

  605. He only blesses imperfect people because it's based on his grace.

  606. And he says, not only do I want to hang

  607. out with you, he says, I want to use you.

  608. To show my goodness to the world. And I want

  609. to bless you. And I want you to be a

  610. trophy of my grace. And I want to show the world, yeah,

  611. even your enemies, how good I am. Psalm 31 verse 19.

    Psalms 31:19

  612. Your goodness is so great. You have stored up great

  613. blessing for those who honor you. You have done so

  614. much for those who come to you for protection when

  615. you're in the battle. blessing them before the watching world.

  616. Now that verse is packed with a lot of good material,

  617. but notice this. First, you might circle the phrase stored up.

  618. He says, God, your goodness is great, and you have

  619. stored up great blessings for those who honor you. Did

  620. you know that God has stored up great blessings for you?

  621. If you're honoring him, he's stored up great blessings for you. Now,

  622. the word stored up, that clearly indicates advanced planning. You

  623. can't store up at the last second. You have to

  624. store up in advance. So God had some advanced planning

  625. going on before he has the banquet for your battleground.

  626. It's pre-thought. It's already been considered. So let's just get

  627. real clear. You're gonna love this. You know that battle

  628. you're fighting right now? It's intense. You may be fighting

  629. it with yourself. You may be fighting it in the world.

  630. You may be fighting it with an addiction. You may

  631. be fighting against the devil. You may be fighting against

  632. your thought life. You may be fighting against a habit.

  633. It's a white knuckle, bare bones battle, mano a mano.

  634. You are tired. and you're worn out because you've been

  635. fighting this battle a long time, that battle that you're

  636. fighting right now, before it even started, God was planning

  637. your victory banquet. He was storing up. He can see

  638. the end. Being confident of this thing, that he who

  639. began a good work in you, will continue it into

  640. the day of completion in Jesus Christ. God does not

  641. sponsor flops. Ultimately, he wins. I've read the last chapter,

  642. and you know if he wins, that means his kids win.

  643. In that battle you're fighting right now, God has already

  644. planned the victory party in advance. God loves to throw

  645. victory celebrations for his children. Look at this verse on

  646. the screen. The Bible says, how great is the Lord?

  647. He is pleased with the success of his servant. God

  648. is pleased with the success of his servant. God is

  649. pleased with your success. When you're trying to honor him,

  650. you don't always do it right. When you're trying to

  651. honor him, you have a tender heart, an open heart,

  652. an authentic heart. God is pleased with the success of

  653. his servant. He wants to bless you to show the

  654. world his goodness. So those are the two reasons we

  655. have this banquet metaphor. God says, I want to fellowship

  656. with you and I want to publicly approve you in

  657. front of everybody else. I want to bless you so

  658. much that even your enemies, their mouths drop. Whoa, look

  659. at that. And we can't even stop that. We don't

  660. even like her but God's hand is on her life.

  661. And watch what God is doing. So last question, what's

  662. on the menu of God's banquet? Remember this banquet's in

  663. your honor. It's for you alone. It's not for anybody else.

  664. He prepares for me a banquet in the presence of

  665. my enemies. What's on the menu of God's banquet? Write

  666. this down. Everything that God has promised in his word,

  667. that's the menu. Every single thing that God has promised

  668. in his word is on the banquet menu. There are,

  669. by many different counts, one major account says that there

  670. are 5,500 promises in this book. Every promise is a

  671. menu item. That God says, yeah, you can order that

  672. one You can order it a la carte or you

  673. can order it with five other promises too. They're all there. 5,500,

  674. some say 6,000. What am I saying? I'm saying this. Listen,

  675. don't get anything else. Get this. Your banquet is in

  676. your Bible. This is the menu. The banquet is in

  677. your Bible. All of the promises that God has given

  678. you about your money, all the promises God has given

  679. you about your relationships, all the promises God has given

  680. you about your past, your present, your future, your salvation,

  681. your heaven, you're saved from hell, all the promises about

  682. God's giftedness in your life, usability, all of the 5,500 promises,

  683. that's a bigger menu than any restaurant you've ever been to.

  684. The banquet is in the Bible. And this Bible is

  685. full of fruit and bread and milk and meat and

  686. all kinds of sweets and tons and tons of desserts.

  687. They're all in here. And the Bible itself is called

  688. the bread of life. And the Bible is called the

  689. meat of the word. And the Bible is called like

  690. honey in the honeycomb. And the Bible is called fruit

  691. that tastes good. And the Bible is, the metaphors of

  692. the Bible being called food, this is your soul food.

  693. Food for your soul. All these tons and tons of desserts.

  694. And what I'm telling you is this. You can have

  695. a feast whenever you got one of these. All you

  696. have to do is open it. Where do you think

  697. you're gonna get your strength from the Bible? Watching YouTube things? No.

  698. Watching television? No. Reading the paper, newspaper? No. Where are

  699. you gonna get your strength for your battle? When you're

  700. worn down, who's gonna lift you up? The word of God.

  701. This is the truth. So if all of the menu

  702. on the banquet of God for your life, all that

  703. good food is in this book, why in the world

  704. would you ever eat an internal or an internet granola bar?

  705. When you've got all this, I mean, you got sirloin

  706. steak in here, your Chateaubriand, we got baked Alaska, you know,

  707. we got Cinnabon, I mean, we got, I mean, whoa,

  708. it's just every page, it's dripping with food. Psalm 119, 103,

  709. look on the screen. The promises of your word taste

  710. sweet to me. And they taste sweet. The taste is

  711. sweeter than honey in my mouth. You don't have a

  712. sweet taste in your mouth, you're not spending enough time

  713. in this book. So let me ask a real quick question.

  714. How much time are you spending in God's word? A

  715. little bit every now and then? Not good enough. That'd

  716. be like eating one meal a week and fasting the

  717. rest of the week. Are you fasting instead of feasting

  718. on the word of God? That's why you're sick, that's

  719. why you're weak, that's why you don't have any, why

  720. you're a pushover for the devil. He can just whip

  721. you around. You give in to all kinds of things.

  722. You don't even see him coming, because they're camouflaged. Enemies

  723. don't just come out and say, hey, I'm the enemy.

  724. But you're malnourished while your banquet sits on the shelf.

  725. It's sitting there, ready to feed you. This is where

  726. you get your strength for the battle. The Bible is

  727. the banquet and all of the promises of God that

  728. he put in it. So you need to go get

  729. a modern translation. If you don't have one, get rid

  730. of the these and nows kind and get one that

  731. can actually read. There's lots of good translations. Look at

  732. this next verse, Psalm 34, verse eight. Learn to savor

  733. how good the Lord is. Isn't that a beautiful verse?

  734. Circle that word savor. Learn to savor how good the

  735. Lord is. The Lord is. You know, what you think

  736. of the Bible, your view of the Bible, what you

  737. think it really represents will determine whether you enjoy it

  738. or not. If you think this book, the Bible, is

  739. a textbook, does anybody enjoy reading a textbook? Very few people.

  740. enjoy reading a textbook. So if you think that this

  741. is a textbook, you're not gonna wanna go be in

  742. it on a daily basis. If you think it's a

  743. history book, it's got a lot of history about Israel

  744. and how God did things in the past and Jesus.

  745. If you think it's a history book, it's not gonna

  746. give you a whole lot Okay, if you think it's

  747. an insurance policy, fire insurance policy to stay out of hell.

  748. Have you ever read an insurance policy through? No. They're

  749. as dry as they can all get out, you'd be bored.

  750. If you thought this was your life insurance policy for

  751. heaven or your fire insurance policy to keep you out

  752. of hell, you would not read it. Let me tell

  753. you what this is. This is God's love letter to you.

  754. This is God's love letter to you. And if you

  755. realize that, you can't wait to go read it. When

  756. Kay and I got engaged, we did the dumb thing

  757. of moving to the opposite side of the world from

  758. each other. She moved to Birmingham, Alabama to work in

  759. an inner city church and I moved to Nagasaki, Japan

  760. to plant a church. And there were no cell phones

  761. in those days. And the other kind of phone was

  762. so expensive, seven, 10, $ 15 a minute. We didn't use that.

  763. So every day we wrote letters to each other that

  764. whole time. And I'd get three or four letters from

  765. her before she'd get the one that I had sent

  766. or two, three I'd sent and she'd get two or

  767. three from me and not responding to the one she had.

  768. It was always out of sync. But as a young

  769. man in love with a young woman and a letter

  770. would come in, you think I'd lay it on the

  771. counter and say, well, I'll read that in a couple days. Man,

  772. I tore that thing apart as fast as I could.

  773. I would read it. I would reread it. I would

  774. try to read between the lines. I would want to

  775. underline and memorize parts of it because that represents her

  776. love for me This is God's love letter to you.

  777. Learn to savor how good the Lord is. If you're

  778. not in this book, you are forgetting every day how

  779. much God loves you. And boy, is that easy to forget.

  780. You forget how much the creator who made you loves you.

  781. He does this whole thing, the banquets, because he loves you.

  782. Look at this next verse, Psalm 36, verse seven to nine.

  783. How precious, O God, is your constant love. We find

  784. protection under the shadow of your wings. We feast, there's

  785. that word again, we feast on the abundant food you provide.

  786. You let us drink from the river of your goodness.

  787. You are the source of all life. And because of

  788. your light, we see the light. God's love for you

  789. is the reason for the feast. It's the reason for

  790. the banquet. Now this statement, and it's just one of

  791. three in this sentence, you prepare a table, you prepare

  792. a banquet, the king's table, for me in the presence

  793. of my enemies. This has a now and future application

  794. to it. It's one of these promises that you get

  795. to use now in the word of God, But there

  796. is going to be a literal, real banquet, the banquet

  797. to end all banquets of all time that start the

  798. new age of eternity, marriage supper of the Lamb. One

  799. day is going to be the greatest banquet of all time.

  800. And who's going to be invited? The people who've put

  801. their faith in Christ, God's children, the people who've trusted

  802. him for salvation. And here's how it's going to happen.

  803. Isaiah 25, the greatest banquet of all, History is moving

  804. toward this climax one day in heaven. The Lord Almighty

  805. will prepare a feast. You know, in the Bible, feasts

  806. are commanded by God. What a God. Not just fasting,

  807. but feasting is commanded too. The Lord Almighty will prepare

  808. a feast of the finest foods for all peoples. I mean,

  809. it doesn't matter what your background is, what your race was,

  810. what your religion was. If you trusted Christ, a banquet

  811. of the best of meats and the finest wines, and

  812. on that mountain, God will destroy the shroud that enfolds

  813. all peoples and the sheath that covers all nations. What's

  814. he talking about there? Well, a shroud, I'll explain this

  815. to you. A shroud is the covering of death. You

  816. put it over a dead body. And a shroud is

  817. the covering of death. It means the gloom that hangs

  818. over people because we all know we're going to die.

  819. And it says God's going to get rid of that one.

  820. The Bible says the last enemy, I mentioned three, but

  821. you have a fourth one. The fourth enemy in your

  822. life is death, and you can't stop that one. The

  823. Bible says one day God is gonna destroy death. The

  824. final enemy will be destroyed. And he says, I'm the

  825. shroud of the covering of death. That's the gloom that

  826. hangs over us because of death. And the sheet, what's that?

  827. The sheet that covers all nations. That's the cloud of

  828. grief that we're all under because we know we're getting older.

  829. We know we're gonna die. We know we're not perfect.

  830. That's the cloud of grief. And God is gonna, in

  831. his goodness, eliminate the last enemy. Look at the rest

  832. of the verse. He will swallow up death forever. The

  833. sovereign Lord will wipe away the tears from all faces

  834. and he will remove the disgrace of his people from

  835. the earth. That means all the mean things said to

  836. you when you tried to stand for Christ, when you

  837. tried to stand for truth, when you said, that's not right.

  838. I can't do that. I can't cheat on that, that's

  839. not right, that's immoral. And all of the put downs

  840. you've had because you tried to stand for truth, you

  841. stand for truth, evil's gonna come against you. He will

  842. remove the disgrace of his people, all the persecution that

  843. have been to those who followed him from the earth.

  844. And in that day, they will say, surely this is

  845. our God. We trusted in him and he saved us, yes.

  846. This is the Lord. We trusted in him. So let

  847. us rejoice and be glad in his salvation. Let's bow

  848. our heads. That's the ultimate banquet one day. Who's invited?

  849. All who've invited Jesus into their lives. Have you met

  850. Jesus yet? Have you accepted his salvation? Are you still

  851. trying to fight all your battles on your own power?

  852. Why don't you pray this simple prayer? I invite you

  853. to pray it once again, just in reaffirmation or maybe

  854. for the first time. God, thank you that you love

  855. me this much. that you host a banquet to honor me,

  856. that you set up the king's table and you fill

  857. it with all the stuff I like to eat and

  858. I'm the guest of honor and it's in public and

  859. it's not in secret and even when I'm in the

  860. middle of a battle like I'm in right now, you

  861. come to the battlefield Lord, on my own power, I

  862. cannot defeat the enemies of the world and all its

  863. pressure to conform. And I cannot defeat Satan and I

  864. can't even defeat my own old nature. But I know

  865. if I spend time with you, you'll give me that power.

  866. Oh God, that you would want and welcome fellowship with

  867. me is too hard to believe. You know everything about

  868. me and you still want to have fellowship with me,

  869. eat with me, hang out with me. Lord, you've said

  870. in your word that you are gently calling from the

  871. jaws of distress to an open place of freedom where

  872. you have set a table full of the best food

  873. for me. You've said that you welcome me with open

  874. arms when I run to cover for you. Your goodness

  875. is so great. God, it is amazing that you've already

  876. stored up the great blessings for those who honor you.

  877. I want to be one of those people. You've already

  878. planned the victory party for the battle that I'm in

  879. the heat of right now. Thank you that you want

  880. to bless me to show the whole world your goodness.

  881. What a God you are God, forgive me for not

  882. reading the menu. Forgive me for not knowing the 5,500

  883. promises that you've made to me. I know that's insulting

  884. and I'm sorry. And I want to commit to learning

  885. to savor how good the Lord is. To spending time

  886. with you every day. Every day. to feast on the

  887. abundant food of your word and to drink from the

  888. river of goodness in the Bible. Lord, your love is

  889. too hard to understand, but as much as I know how,

  890. I ask you to accept me into your family. I

  891. wanna be one of your children. I wanna put my

  892. faith in Christ. I wanna follow him the rest of

  893. my life. I wanna not listen to what the world says.

  894. And I want to do what you say because you

  895. say those who do the will of the Lord will

  896. live forever. And thank you, Lord, that one day there

  897. will be a great feast. And at that feast, you're

  898. going to end all death and sorrow and suffering and

  899. sadness and take away all the tears. I commit my

  900. life to you. I repent to you because of your

  901. goodness to me. And I pray this humbly in Jesus' name. Amen.
