  1. Good morning, church.

  2. It's great to be with you this morning.

  3. Good morning, my name is Chad Eckerd.

  4. I've been married to my wife, Bethany, for 18 years, and God has blessed us with six kiddos.

  5. We've attended Maranatha now since early 2023, and it has been a great privilege to be part

  6. of this church and to serve alongside all of you.

  7. The sermon series is titled, Becoming the Church, and the message today is God's people unite

  8. in prayer.

  9. Pastor David has gotten us back into Acts the last two weeks, and we've been working our

  10. way through chapter four.

  11. He provided a helpful summary by chapter, especially considering how many months we were in judges.

  12. In Acts chapter one, he pointed us to Jesus commissions his witnesses.

  13. Acts two, Jesus empowers his witnesses.

  14. Acts three, we see that Jesus works through his witnesses.

  15. In Acts four, Jesus builds his church.

  16. Two weeks ago, we looked at the arrest of Peter and John.

  17. The priests and Sadducees interrupted their message to the crowd and physically removed them

  18. and threw them into jail.

  19. It was the message that they preached, and specifically the resurrection and power of Jesus,

  20. that drew the opposition and the rage from the spiritual leaders.

  21. But despite the opposition, Pastor David pointed out that the text clearly reveals

  22. the authorities are unable to control Christ's work.

  23. As the narrative states, many believed the message that they preached, and the number of the men

  24. was about 5,000.

  25. Nevertheless, Peter and John were brought before the Sanhedrin in an official trial to answer

  26. the question that we find in verse seven of chapter four.

  27. By what power or in what name have you done this?

  28. What we see in Peter's answer is that spirit filling brings about a proclamation of God's work in Christ.

  29. The visible result was faithful, courageous, Christ-centered speech.

  30. Despite the opposition, the filling of the Holy Spirit makes the reality of Christ greater.

  31. Peter boldly points the Sanhedrin to the truth that salvation is found in Christ alone.

  32. Ponder the reality of God's grace in this moment.

  33. He's using Peter, the same guy who just weeks before fell flat on his face.

  34. In this moment, God wanted to use him.

  35. And we know God will continue to use Peter

  36. to preach his word and grow his church.

  37. It highlights the point that Pastor David made last week.

  38. When we fail, our focus doesn't mainly need to be on ourselves.

  39. It's an easy tendency to beat ourselves up when we fail.

  40. That doesn't diminish the importance of being honest,

  41. of acknowledging our failures,

  42. repenting of our sin.

  43. But the greatest need that we have

  44. is to see more of Jesus.

  45. He's at work.

  46. And he's empowering his people to do great things.

  47. Even the ones that just failed.

  48. Last week, we saw

  49. that the response and confidence of Peter and John

  50. completely astounded the Sanhedrin.

  51. This group of the most influential

  52. and highly esteemed spiritual leaders

  53. with all their education

  54. were left speechless by two fishermen.

  55. To the point that they sent them away

  56. so that they could gather their thoughts

  57. and come up with a response.

  58. What we saw was that the council

  59. was simply unwilling to accept the truth about Christ.

  60. The truth that was standing right in front of them

  61. in a healed lame man.

  62. So they ordered Peter and John

  63. to stop speaking of Jesus.

  64. And this was in direct opposition

  65. to Peter and John's commissioning.

  66. Jesus sent them out to be his witnesses.

  67. And so the response to the Sanhedrin was,

  68. as for us, we must speak.

  69. They cannot stop speaking

  70. because they're filled with the Holy Spirit

  71. and compelled to proclaim his name.

  72. They cherish Christ more than anything else.

  73. And this unified response

  74. leaves the Sanhedrin obviously angry.

  75. But they don't have as many options

  76. as they'd like

  77. to impose upon Peter and John.

  78. Which brings us to our passage today.

  79. If you're using the Pew Bibles,

  80. you're going to find our text on page 912.

  81. The focus this morning is on unity

  82. and prayer.

  83. Let's start in Acts 4, verse 23.

    Acts 4:23

  84. It says,

  85. When they were released,

  86. they went to their friends

  87. and reported what the chief priests

  88. and the elders had said to them.

  89. If you're following along in the bulletin,

  90. the first note is right here.

  91. The fellowship we share as believers

  92. is essential.

  93. The fellowship that we share as believers

  94. is essential.

  95. Our fellowship as a body

  96. at Maranatha

  97. is essential.

  98. Let's think about what Peter and John

  99. just experienced

  100. in this trial before the Sanhedrin.

  101. This was an intensely intimidating,

  102. high-stakes confrontation.

  103. The Sanhedrin were the highest legal,

  104. political,

  105. and religious council

  106. in ancient Israel.

  107. They possessed immense wealth

  108. and political influence

  109. and authority.

  110. And although the text

  111. doesn't specifically state it,

  112. we're likely safe to assume

  113. that the threats included

  114. threats of physical violence.

  115. This wasn't just a stern

  116. talking to that they received.

  117. It's probable that they threatened

  118. physical harm against Peter and John

  119. and maybe even their loved ones.

  120. And we'll see in chapter 5

  121. that that's exactly what they inflict

  122. upon the apostles.

  123. There was also likely

  124. the threat

  125. of social and religious exile.

  126. This would mean being

  127. completely outcast

  128. from the spiritual life of Israel.

  129. And also,

  130. a natural result of that

  131. would be personal ruin

  132. and business as well.

  133. The threat of death,

  134. which obviously just happened

  135. to Jesus

  136. as Peter and John witnessed.

  137. Pastor David pointed us

  138. to the parallels

  139. between the trial in Acts 4

  140. and Jesus' trial

  141. before essentially

  142. the same men.

  143. So we know that they're willing

  144. to take this step

  145. if necessary.

  146. It's also worth

  147. taking a moment

  148. just to think about

  149. what we know

  150. about Peter and John.

  151. Just to briefly focus

  152. on the reality

  153. of their lives.

  154. Peter's married.

  155. The Gospels mention

  156. Jesus visiting

  157. Peter's mother-in-law.

  158. And Paul mentions

  159. Peter's wife

  160. accompanying him

  161. on multiple trips.

  162. John has been given

  163. responsibility over Mary,

  164. Jesus' mother.

  165. And we know that

  166. his family runs

  167. what seems to be

  168. a pretty successful

  169. fishing business.

  170. There were people

  171. just like us

  172. dealing with the pressures

  173. and decisions

  174. of everyday life.

  175. And they stood

  176. before a council

  177. that had the power

  178. and authority

  179. to completely change

  180. their life.

  181. To completely change

  182. the reality

  183. that they faced.

  184. And after responding

  185. boldly and courageously

  186. to the council,

  187. Luke tells us

  188. that Peter and John

  189. return

  190. to their church

  191. or group of believers.

  192. our text says

  193. their friends.

  194. The fellowship

  195. that we share together

  196. as believers

  197. and as Maranatha

  198. Baptist Church

  199. is something

  200. that we should cherish

  201. and prioritize.

  202. It's a privilege

  203. to build community

  204. together,

  205. to share victories

  206. together,

  207. to bear one another's

  208. burdens,

  209. encourage and build

  210. one another up,

  211. to be devoted

  212. to each other

  213. in brotherly love.

  214. We need

  215. to spur one another

  216. toward love

  217. and good deeds.

  218. And we need

  219. to hold each other

  220. accountable.

  221. Jesus states

  222. explicitly

  223. in John 13, 35

  224. that it is our love

  225. for one another

  226. that bears witness

  227. to all men

  228. that we are

  229. his disciples.

  230. It's our love

  231. as a church

  232. that makes people

  233. see were his.

  234. And so I think

  235. it's very clear,

  236. even though it's

  237. a small part

  238. of our text,

  239. that fellowship

  240. as a body

  241. is essential.

  242. And we see

  243. the evidence

  244. of this reality

  245. in the fact

  246. that Peter and John

  247. immediately seek out

  248. this fellowship.

  249. The second point

  250. this morning

  251. is when God's

  252. people are united,

  253. they pray together.

  254. When God's people

  255. are united,

  256. they pray together.

  257. look at the first part

  258. of Acts 4, 24.

  259. And when they heard it,

  260. speaking of the people

  261. Peter and John

  262. returned to,

  263. they lifted their voices

  264. together to God.

  265. The New American

  266. Standard says,

  267. and when they heard this,

  268. they lifted their voices

  269. to God

  270. with one accord.

  271. Peter and John

  272. report what the

  273. Sanhedrin

  274. had threatened

  275. them with,

  276. and they unite

  277. in prayer.

  278. And we see the emphasis

  279. of their unity.

  280. The Greek word

  281. that's translated

  282. with one accord

  283. describes people

  284. who share

  285. like precious faith,

  286. creating a God-produced

  287. unity between them.

  288. Here they have

  289. the same mind

  290. because each receives

  291. the same revelation

  292. of his word.

  293. Now the New Testament

  294. uses this word

  295. 11 total times

  296. and 10 of them

  297. we find in Acts.

  298. And Luke has already

  299. used this word

  300. to describe this group

  301. of believers.

  302. The first instance

  303. that we see

  304. is in Acts 1, 13,

  305. following the ascension

  306. of Christ.

  307. starting in the first

  308. part of verse 13,

  309. it says,

  310. and when they had

  311. entered,

  312. they went to

  313. the upper room

  314. where they were staying.

  315. If you drop to 14,

  316. it says,

  317. all these

  318. with one accord,

  319. that's our word,

  320. were devoting

  321. themselves

  322. to prayer.

  323. We find it

  324. again

  325. used in

  326. Acts chapter 2.

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  327. Look at the unity

  328. described

  329. starting in

  330. verse 44.

  331. Acts 2, 44.

  332. And all those

  333. who had believed

  334. were together

  335. and had all

  336. things in common.

  337. And they began

  338. selling their property

  339. and possessions

  340. and were sharing

  341. them with all

  342. as anyone

  343. might have need.

  344. Day by day

  345. continuing

  346. with one mind

  347. in the temple

  348. and breaking

  349. bread from

  350. house to house.

  351. They were taking

  352. their meals together

  353. with gladness

  354. and sincerity

  355. of heart,

  356. praising God

  357. and having favor

  358. with all the people.

  359. What we see Luke

  360. communicating

  361. is that God

  362. is producing

  363. a special unity

  364. amongst this

  365. people.

  366. It's unity

  367. that he produces

  368. through the fruit

  369. of the Spirit

  370. working in his church.

  371. and we see

  372. that this unity

  373. produces prayer.

  374. The persecution

  375. from the Sanhedrin

  376. and all the pressure

  377. was initially

  378. directed at two men,

  379. Peter and John.

  380. Now the entire

  381. community

  382. is together

  383. and calling out

  384. to God

  385. to bear the burden.

  386. Persecution

  387. against one

  388. or all

  389. unites God's people.

  390. Now the corporate

  391. prayer life

  392. of the early church

  393. was already

  394. well established.

  395. Just in the

  396. couple chapters

  397. leading up to this,

  398. Luke highlights

  399. several instances

  400. where the same

  401. community

  402. gathered to pray.

  403. As they were

  404. waiting for the

  405. coming of the Holy Spirit,

  406. they prayed together

  407. as we just read

  408. in Acts 1,

  409. 13 and 14.

  410. When they were

  411. replacing Judas,

  412. they prayed together

  413. to seek God's will

  414. in Acts 1,

  415. 24 to 25.

  416. Right after

  417. the day of Pentecost,

  418. Acts 2, 42

  419. describes the believers

  420. devoting themselves

  421. to the apostles'

  422. teaching

  423. and the fellowship,

  424. to the breaking

  425. of bread

  426. and the prayers.

  427. By the time

  428. they faced

  429. the Sanhedrin's

  430. threats

  431. in chapter 4,

  432. corporate prayer

  433. had been established

  434. as a way

  435. to unify

  436. their hearts

  437. and seek God.

  438. It was an

  439. essential aspect

  440. right at the birth

  441. of the early church

  442. and a way

  443. to continue

  444. walking in step

  445. with Him.

  446. And that hasn't

  447. changed for us.

  448. Which brings us

  449. to the actual

  450. prayer found

  451. in our passage

  452. today.

  453. And it's the bulk

  454. of what we'll be

  455. looking at.

  456. starting in verse 24.

  457. And when they heard it,

  458. they lifted their voices

  459. together to God

  460. and said,

  461. Sovereign Lord,

  462. who made the heaven

  463. and the earth

  464. and the sea

  465. and everything

  466. in them,

  467. who through the mouth

  468. of our father David,

  469. your servant,

  470. said by the Holy Spirit,

  471. why did the Gentiles

  472. rage

  473. and the people's

  474. plot in vain?

  475. The kings

  476. of the earth

  477. set themselves

  478. and the rulers

  479. were gathered together

  480. against the Lord

  481. and against His anointed.

  482. For truly,

  483. in this city,

  484. they were gathered

  485. together against

  486. Your holy servant Jesus,

  487. whom You anointed,

  488. both Herod

  489. and Pontius Pilate,

  490. along with the Gentiles

  491. and the peoples

  492. of Israel,

  493. to do whatever

  494. Your hand

  495. and Your plan

  496. had predestined

  497. to take place.

  498. And now,

  499. Lord,

  500. look upon their threats

  501. and grant to Your servants

  502. to continue

  503. to speak Your word

  504. with all boldness,

  505. while You stretch out

  506. Your hand to heal,

  507. and signs and wonders

  508. are performed

  509. through the name

  510. of Your holy servant,

  511. Jesus.

  512. What we see first

  513. in their prayer

  514. is that they recognize

  515. who God is.

  516. They recognize

  517. who God is.

  518. The prayer begins

  519. calling out

  520. sovereign Lord.

  521. We see this term

  522. used ten times

  523. in the New Testament,

  524. and it's consistently used

  525. to underscore

  526. absolute authority,

  527. whether divine

  528. or human.

  529. In our passage,

  530. they're praying,

  531. addressing God

  532. as sovereign Lord,

  533. legitimizing their confidence

  534. in divine control,

  535. despite the hostile rulers.

  536. They're focusing

  537. on His power

  538. and His purpose

  539. in creation.

  540. God is the true authority

  541. over all human authorities.

  542. And what we see,

  543. even just in how

  544. they start the prayer,

  545. is that the courage

  546. of the church

  547. is rooted

  548. in a clarified vision

  549. of who God is.

  550. they start

  551. by reminding themselves

  552. who's in charge

  553. of their circumstances.

  554. The second thing

  555. we see

  556. is they recognize

  557. the authority

  558. of Scripture.

  559. The beginning

  560. of verse 25

  561. says,

  562. who threw the mouth

  563. of our father David,

  564. your servant,

  565. said by the Holy Spirit.

  566. It's God's decisive work

  567. evident in His people.

  568. The Scriptures

  569. are written by man,

  570. inspired by God

  571. through the Holy Spirit.

  572. It also points

  573. to their knowledge

  574. of the Word

  575. and their reliance

  576. upon it.

  577. They're about to recall

  578. Psalm 2,

  579. but there are numerous

  580. examples,

  581. again,

  582. that we see

  583. right before

  584. this chapter 4

  585. in Acts

  586. that point

  587. to their emphasis

  588. of knowing God's Word.

  589. We're not going

  590. to take the time

  591. to look at each one,

  592. but just to list them

  593. out as an example.

  594. In Peter's sermon

  595. at Pentecost,

  596. he references

  597. three Old Testament passages.

  598. He quotes Joel

  599. in Acts 2,

  600. 17-21.

  601. He quotes Psalm 16

  602. in Acts 2,

  603. 25-28.

  604. He references

  605. Psalm 110

  606. in Acts 2,

  607. 34-35.

  608. Then in Acts 3,

  609. 18,

  610. he connects

  611. the rejection

  612. of Jesus

  613. to what the prophets

  614. foretold.

  615. And the promise

  616. given to Abraham

  617. in Genesis 12,

  618. he cites in Acts 3,

  619. 25.

  620. The point is,

  621. the early church

  622. knew Scripture well,

  623. and they frequently

  624. reminded each other

  625. of God's promises

  626. and His faithfulness

  627. by referencing it.

  628. And now we see

  629. they quote Psalm 2,

  630. specifically the first

  631. two verses.

  632. The second part

  633. of verse 25,

  634. Why did the Gentiles

  635. rage

  636. and the people's

  637. plot in vain?

  638. The kings of the earth

  639. set themselves

  640. and the rulers

  641. were gathered together

  642. against the Lord

  643. and against His anointed.

  644. This psalm

  645. is quoted

  646. explicitly four times

  647. in the New Testament,

  648. and it's referenced

  649. another dozen,

  650. making it one of the

  651. most frequently referenced

  652. Old Testament chapters

  653. found in the New Testament.

  654. Psalm 2 is a call

  655. to kings

  656. and rulers

  657. of the earth

  658. to worship God,

  659. to honor Christ,

  660. and take refuge

  661. in Him.

  662. It declares God

  663. as sovereign,

  664. the true king.

  665. It tells us that

  666. He scoffs

  667. at earthly rulers

  668. and has declared

  669. Christ as king.

  670. C.H. Spurgeon

  671. notes,

  672. This psalm

  673. sets forth

  674. as in a wondrous vision

  675. the tumult

  676. of the people

  677. against the Lord's

  678. anointed,

  679. the determinate

  680. purpose of God

  681. to exalt His own

  682. Son,

  683. and the ultimate

  684. reign of that Son

  685. over all His enemies.

  686. We have in the

  687. first three verses

  688. a description

  689. of the hatred

  690. of human nature

  691. against the Christ

  692. of God.

  693. In terms of the

  694. believers recalling

  695. Psalm 2

  696. in this prayer,

  697. Spurgeon says,

  698. No better comment

  699. is needed upon it

  700. than the apostolic

  701. song in Acts 4,

  702. 27-28.

  703. And what we find

  704. in verse 27,

  705. this is called

  706. a pescher

  707. hermeneutic.

  708. I put it in your notes.

  709. I had no idea

  710. what it was

  711. before I started

  712. studying this passage.

  713. A pescher

  714. treatment of a text

  715. is a method

  716. of scriptural

  717. interpretation

  718. where an ancient

  719. prophetic text

  720. is explained

  721. as having meaning

  722. that applies

  723. directly to

  724. current circumstances.

  725. In this instance,

  726. what we see

  727. is the early believers

  728. taking groups

  729. mentioned in the Psalm

  730. and equating them

  731. with persons

  732. involved in

  733. Christ's crucifixion.

  734. You see the Gentiles

  735. and nations

  736. mentioned,

  737. those are represented

  738. by the Roman authorities.

  739. The peoples,

  740. that's the people

  741. of Israel.

  742. Kings of the earth

  743. represented by

  744. King Herod.

  745. Rulers,

  746. Pontius Pilate,

  747. the Roman governor.

  748. And the anointed,

  749. of course,

  750. that's Jesus,

  751. the Christ.

  752. Christ.

  753. What the believers

  754. are doing

  755. is recognizing

  756. continuity

  757. between the hostility

  758. that Jesus endured

  759. and the hostility

  760. it now faces.

  761. It's truly a hostility

  762. against Christ's rule.

  763. The Sanhedrin

  764. have made this

  765. quite clear

  766. as they've taken issue

  767. with who Peter

  768. and John

  769. give credit to.

  770. Remember the question,

  771. by what power

  772. or by what name

  773. did you do this?

  774. They've forbidden them

  775. to speak

  776. or teach

  777. in the name of Jesus.

  778. The fourth thing

  779. that we see

  780. in the prayer

  781. is that they recognize

  782. God's providence.

  783. verse 28.

  784. To do whatever

  785. your hand

  786. and your plan

  787. had predestined

  788. to take place.

  789. So,

  790. sitting on my shelf

  791. at home,

  792. there's a rather large book.

  793. It's got about 700 pages

  794. that I've cracked open

  795. a couple times,

  796. but this sermon

  797. led me to getting into it

  798. a little bit more.

  799. The title of it

  800. is Providence,

  801. written by John Piper.

  802. And although I was

  803. very eager

  804. to get the book,

  805. I have not read it all.

  806. And I've only referenced

  807. it a few times

  808. as I've studied

  809. different topics.

  810. My wife would say

  811. that this fact

  812. applies to far

  813. too many books

  814. on my shelves.

  815. And for now,

  816. she's not wrong.

  817. Amen.

  818. In the book,

  819. Piper's goal

  820. is that Christians

  821. would see and savor

  822. the providence of God.

  823. Now,

  824. providence is not a word

  825. that's found in Scripture.

  826. But I think the purpose

  827. of using the word

  828. will become evident

  829. as we define it.

  830. And it's exactly

  831. what John Piper does

  832. at the beginning

  833. of the book.

  834. He says,

  835. Providence

  836. is purposeful

  837. sovereignty.

  838. It's the active

  839. outworking

  840. where God

  841. applies

  842. His sovereign power

  843. to guide all things,

  844. govern creation,

  845. and successfully

  846. achieve

  847. His ultimate goal

  848. for the universe.

  849. He says,

  850. Sovereignty

  851. establishes

  852. that God

  853. has the supreme right,

  854. absolute authority,

  855. and total power

  856. to rule.

  857. Providence

  858. is the actual

  859. outworking

  860. of that power

  861. as He actively

  862. manages,

  863. sustains,

  864. and guides creation.

  865. Now,

  866. although Luke

  867. doesn't use

  868. the word providence,

  869. I think it's exactly

  870. what the believers

  871. are communicating

  872. in their prayer.

  873. Almighty God

  874. is the one

  875. that they pray to,

  876. the creator

  877. of heaven

  878. and earth.

  879. And He has used

  880. men

  881. to communicate

  882. His holy word

  883. to His people.

  884. And He's also

  885. used men

  886. to come against

  887. Christ.

  888. according to

  889. His purposes

  890. which He

  891. predetermined.

  892. What the believers

  893. recognize

  894. is that God

  895. is at work

  896. and they trust

  897. in His plan.

  898. The next thing

  899. we see in their prayer,

  900. they ask for

  901. confidence

  902. and boldness.

  903. In verse 29,

  904. it says,

  905. And now,

  906. Lord,

  907. look upon

  908. their threats

  909. and grant

  910. to your servants

  911. to continue

  912. to speak

  913. your word

  914. with all

  915. boldness.

  916. They note

  917. the threats

  918. that the

  919. priests

  920. and Sadducees

  921. have

  922. threatened them

  923. with

  924. and they ask

  925. God to give

  926. them confidence

  927. and boldness

  928. to continue

  929. to proclaim

  930. His name.

  931. This is what

  932. they have just

  933. faithfully done

  934. in verse 20.

  935. They had just

  936. done this.

  937. They recognize

  938. their need

  939. for new

  940. mercies

  941. despite

  942. previous

  943. victory.

  944. And sometimes

  945. I think this

  946. can be a

  947. stumbling block

  948. for us.

  949. Maybe a source

  950. of pride.

  951. We experience

  952. spiritual victory

  953. in some way

  954. and we lose

  955. sight that God

  956. is the one

  957. who produced it.

  958. or we start

  959. to believe

  960. that we can

  961. duplicate it

  962. ourselves.

  963. Even though

  964. Peter and John

  965. had just

  966. faithfully defended

  967. the work of

  968. Jesus before

  969. the Sanhedrin

  970. and boldly

  971. spoke in

  972. His name,

  973. we see them

  974. here along

  975. with the rest

  976. of the believers

  977. asking for

  978. boldness

  979. to proclaim

  980. His name.

  981. They don't

  982. ask for

  983. escape

  984. or removal

  985. and depending

  986. on the

  987. circumstances

  988. I'm not

  989. sure that

  990. that's

  991. wrong.

  992. In fact,

  993. Paul asks

  994. for the

  995. thorn in

  996. his flesh

  997. to be

  998. removed

  999. and Jesus

  1000. asks for

  1001. removal in

  1002. the garden.

  1003. But in

  1004. this instance,

  1005. Jesus had

  1006. commissioned

  1007. this group

  1008. of believers

  1009. to give

  1010. testimony

  1011. to Him

  1012. to the

  1013. ends of

  1014. the earth.

  1015. So when

  1016. the Sanhedrin

  1017. charged them

  1018. not to speak

  1019. in Jesus'

  1020. name,

  1021. this order

  1022. is in

  1023. direct

  1024. conflict

  1025. with Jesus'

  1026. order.

  1027. Pastor David

  1028. pointed us

  1029. clearly to

  1030. the fact

  1031. that Peter

  1032. and John

  1033. cannot

  1034. stop

  1035. speaking

  1036. and the

  1037. reason they

  1038. cannot stop

  1039. speaking is

  1040. because they're

  1041. cherishing

  1042. Christ

  1043. appropriately.

  1044. What we

  1045. see is the

  1046. believers have

  1047. a clear view

  1048. of their

  1049. circumstances

  1050. and their

  1051. dependence on

  1052. God to

  1053. work through

  1054. them.

  1055. They're asking

  1056. God to help

  1057. them to remain

  1058. faithful to

  1059. their mission

  1060. and displaying

  1061. true humility

  1062. and dependence

  1063. on Him.

  1064. next we see

  1065. that they

  1066. declare faith

  1067. that God

  1068. will continue

  1069. to work.

  1070. They declare

  1071. faith that God

  1072. will continue

  1073. to work.

  1074. Verse 30,

  1075. while you

  1076. stretch out

  1077. your hand

  1078. to heal

  1079. and signs

  1080. and wonders

  1081. are performed

  1082. through the

  1083. name of your

  1084. holy servant

  1085. Jesus.

  1086. The council

  1087. forbid the

  1088. name of

  1089. Jesus.

  1090. Jesus.

  1091. So the

  1092. church asks

  1093. God to

  1094. keep displaying

  1095. the power

  1096. of the

  1097. name of

  1098. Jesus.

  1099. They're

  1100. praying that

  1101. God would

  1102. continue to

  1103. work,

  1104. continue to

  1105. do the

  1106. work you

  1107. have purpose

  1108. to do

  1109. and help

  1110. us to

  1111. remain

  1112. faithful

  1113. to what

  1114. you call

  1115. us to

  1116. do.

  1117. The

  1118. challenge

  1119. here is

  1120. that we

  1121. don't allow

  1122. the obstacles

  1123. in life

  1124. to grow

  1125. bigger

  1126. than what

  1127. they are

  1128. in reality.

  1129. This doesn't

  1130. diminish the

  1131. challenges that

  1132. we face.

  1133. There are

  1134. many challenges

  1135. and struggles

  1136. that we are

  1137. facing every

  1138. day.

  1139. Many great

  1140. challenges even

  1141. people within

  1142. this body are

  1143. facing.

  1144. But our

  1145. God is so

  1146. much greater

  1147. than any

  1148. challenge that

  1149. we might

  1150. face.

  1151. God

  1152. has given

  1153. us his

  1154. word to

  1155. strengthen our

  1156. confidence and

  1157. illuminate our

  1158. understanding.

  1159. He's given us

  1160. his spirit to

  1161. recognize how

  1162. he is at

  1163. work and

  1164. to empower

  1165. us to be

  1166. faithful to

  1167. him.

  1168. I know I

  1169. I far too

  1170. often spend

  1171. too much

  1172. time looking

  1173. at my

  1174. problems or

  1175. looking at the

  1176. circumstances that

  1177. I'm facing.

  1178. I like to

  1179. analyze and

  1180. sometimes that

  1181. can be a good

  1182. thing.

  1183. But when I get

  1184. distracted by

  1185. analyzing the

  1186. problems in

  1187. front of me

  1188. and I delay

  1189. or I fail to

  1190. bring it to

  1191. God, what

  1192. happens is I

  1193. end up focusing

  1194. far too much

  1195. on the problem

  1196. itself.

  1197. And generally

  1198. when I do

  1199. that, the

  1200. size of the

  1201. problem gets

  1202. out of proportion

  1203. to reality.

  1204. I lose sight

  1205. of the bigger

  1206. picture.

  1207. And often

  1208. when I do

  1209. this, I'm

  1210. trying to

  1211. resolve the

  1212. issue in

  1213. my own

  1214. strength and

  1215. in my own

  1216. wisdom.

  1217. What we see

  1218. in chapter 4

  1219. is this group

  1220. of believers

  1221. immediately take

  1222. this to God.

  1223. not only

  1224. that, scripture

  1225. implores us

  1226. in the book

  1227. of James,

  1228. specifically

  1229. when we face

  1230. trials,

  1231. verse 2,

  1232. James says,

  1233. count it all

  1234. joy, my

  1235. brothers,

  1236. when you meet

  1237. trials of

  1238. various kinds.

  1239. What a

  1240. challenge that

  1241. is.

  1242. Count it

  1243. joy.

  1244. joy.

  1245. And as I

  1246. thought about

  1247. joy, I

  1248. couldn't help

  1249. but also

  1250. think about

  1251. what Hebrews

  1252. tells us

  1253. about Jesus.

  1254. I'm sure

  1255. it's familiar

  1256. to all of

  1257. you, Hebrews

  1258. 12, 2,

  1259. looking to

  1260. Jesus, the

  1261. founder and

  1262. perfecter of

  1263. our faith,

  1264. who for the

  1265. joy that was

  1266. set before

  1267. him endured

  1268. the cross,

  1269. despising

  1270. the shame.

  1271. As

  1272. believers,

  1273. when we

  1274. face trials,

  1275. it's our

  1276. joy that

  1277. is to be

  1278. evident to

  1279. others in

  1280. those moments.

  1281. And we

  1282. have that

  1283. joy because

  1284. our hope

  1285. is in

  1286. Christ.

  1287. We know

  1288. the victory

  1289. is found

  1290. in him.

  1291. And so

  1292. despite what

  1293. we face

  1294. here on

  1295. earth, we

  1296. have joy.

  1297. It's my

  1298. prayer that

  1299. God would

  1300. produce this

  1301. focus on

  1302. all of us.

  1303. When trials

  1304. appear, that

  1305. we would be

  1306. joyful, that

  1307. we would

  1308. recognize that

  1309. the trials

  1310. verify and

  1311. strengthen our

  1312. faith, that

  1313. they would

  1314. enhance the

  1315. unity we

  1316. have in

  1317. Christ as

  1318. a body.

  1319. And that

  1320. we would

  1321. be

  1322. encouraged

  1323. because it's

  1324. through the

  1325. trials that

  1326. God draws

  1327. us to

  1328. himself and

  1329. deepens our

  1330. intimacy with

  1331. him.

  1332. Each trial

  1333. is an

  1334. opportunity to

  1335. trust him

  1336. more.

  1337. Which brings

  1338. us to the

  1339. last point

  1340. this morning.

  1341. God answers

  1342. immediately

  1343. and

  1344. definitively.

  1345. God answers

  1346. immediately and

  1347. definitively.

  1348. Verse 31.

  1349. And when

  1350. they had

  1351. prayed, the

  1352. place in

  1353. which they

  1354. were gathered

  1355. together was

  1356. shaken.

  1357. And they

  1358. were all

  1359. filled with

  1360. the Holy

  1361. Spirit and

  1362. continued to

  1363. speak the

  1364. word of

  1365. God with

  1366. boldness.

  1367. God responds

  1368. by causing

  1369. the place they

  1370. were gathered

  1371. to shake.

  1372. They're all

  1373. filled with the

  1374. Holy Spirit and

  1375. speak the word

  1376. of God with

  1377. boldness.

  1378. The exact

  1379. thing that they

  1380. were praying

  1381. for.

  1382. When it says

  1383. that the place

  1384. was shaken,

  1385. it's the same

  1386. word that's

  1387. used to

  1388. describe when

  1389. the prison

  1390. was shaken

  1391. that Paul and

  1392. Silas were

  1393. imprisoned in.

  1394. The earthquake

  1395. that happened,

  1396. that's the same

  1397. word that's used

  1398. here.

  1399. This was a real

  1400. shaking.

  1401. It was

  1402. unmistakable.

  1403. God responds

  1404. immediately.

  1405. Note the

  1406. unity of the

  1407. people.

  1408. The entire

  1409. group, not

  1410. just Peter and

  1411. John, are

  1412. speaking boldly.

  1413. There was no

  1414. way to miss

  1415. that God was

  1416. at work.

  1417. The filling of

  1418. the Holy Spirit

  1419. they experienced,

  1420. this was not a

  1421. second Pentecost.

  1422. It's a fresh

  1423. filling.

  1424. The filling of

  1425. the Holy Spirit

  1426. God.

  1427. The church is

  1428. empowered for

  1429. boldness and

  1430. confident witness.

  1431. What an amazing

  1432. God that we

  1433. serve.

  1434. What a

  1435. gracious God

  1436. he is.

  1437. And as I was

  1438. contemplating the

  1439. main message in

  1440. this passage,

  1441. what we see is

  1442. that God's given

  1443. us a clear

  1444. picture of a

  1445. united people

  1446. devoted to

  1447. him.

  1448. This passage is

  1449. a pristine

  1450. example of a

  1451. group of

  1452. believers that

  1453. cherish God

  1454. rightly and

  1455. how they

  1456. pray.

  1457. I'm not

  1458. saying they're

  1459. a perfect

  1460. people, but

  1461. we do see God

  1462. working mightily

  1463. through them to

  1464. cherish him

  1465. despite the

  1466. circumstances that

  1467. they face.

  1468. and they pray

  1469. with great

  1470. faith.

  1471. My favorite

  1472. gospel is

  1473. John.

  1474. And as I

  1475. thought about

  1476. their prayer,

  1477. I couldn't

  1478. help but think

  1479. of what Jesus

  1480. tells us in

  1481. verse 13 of

  1482. chapter 14.

  1483. He says,

  1484. whatever you

  1485. ask in my

  1486. name, this

  1487. I will do,

  1488. that the

  1489. Father may be

  1490. glorified in

  1491. the Son.

  1492. If you ask me

  1493. anything in my

  1494. name, I will

  1495. do it.

  1496. We can be

  1497. confident that

  1498. when we pray in

  1499. accordance with

  1500. his will, he's

  1501. faithful to do

  1502. it.

  1503. What we've

  1504. seen in Acts

  1505. 4 is that

  1506. despite the

  1507. opposition,

  1508. God builds

  1509. his church.

  1510. And God is

  1511. still building

  1512. his church.

  1513. May we be a

  1514. body that

  1515. prioritizes

  1516. fellowship and

  1517. prayer to the

  1518. honor and praise

  1519. of him.

  1520. Let's pray.

  1521. Heavenly

  1522. Father,

  1523. we are

  1524. humbled to

  1525. be able to

  1526. approach you.

  1527. We are

  1528. humbled that

  1529. you are at

  1530. work upon

  1531. us.

  1532. We are

  1533. humbled that

  1534. we get to

  1535. experience the

  1536. power of the

  1537. Holy Spirit

  1538. working in

  1539. us.

  1540. I pray for

  1541. our church

  1542. that you would

  1543. move mightily

  1544. amongst us.

  1545. We recognize

  1546. that you have

  1547. done great

  1548. things.

  1549. Please continue

  1550. to work in

  1551. us and help

  1552. us to see

  1553. the opportunities

  1554. that you put

  1555. before us each

  1556. day.

  1557. You are still

  1558. at work.

  1559. You are still

  1560. building your

  1561. church.

  1562. church.

  1563. It is our

  1564. desire to be

  1565. obedient to

  1566. you and to

  1567. represent you

  1568. well.

  1569. I pray that

  1570. you help us

  1571. to recognize

  1572. each opportunity

  1573. that we have

  1574. in front of

  1575. us.

  1576. It's in the

  1577. great and

  1578. powerful name

  1579. of Jesus

  1580. that I pray.

  1581. Amen.

  1582. may

  1583. may
