  1. So we are going to be in Matthew chapter 16.

    Matthew 16 chapter mention

  2. It's going to be a lesson on priorities.

  3. We'll start in verse 21.

  4. It says,

  5. Then said Jesus unto his disciples,

  6. So our discussion today is going to be about priorities

  7. and how it's an integral part of your everyday life.

  8. Jesus set an example of placing the will of God first and foremost in his life.

  9. And in this lesson, we'll see how his forceful rebuke of Peter's seemingly well-meaning attempt

  10. to get him off track from his duty to God and fallen mankind.

  11. So by the end of today, we should know a couple things.

  12. First, we should understand that God has a fundamental purpose for every person's life.

  13. Next, we should realize that self-denial is a requirement of following God's purpose.

  14. And then lastly, we should choose to place God's will as the ultimate first priority in our own lives.

  15. So you've probably heard it said before that to get things done, you need to organize, deputize, and supervise.

  16. And while that's true, there's another word that should be included, and that's prioritize.

  17. It's always important to get things done, but it's even more important to get them done in the right order.

  18. In my classroom, I have printed off on big, bold letters.

  19. I had to be kind of sneaky about it because it's a Bible verse, so I didn't include the reference.

  20. But, so that's me being sneaky.

  21. And it just says, we will do everything decently and in order.

  22. And it's something I've been really pushing on my class because with eighth graders or, you know, how organized is a middle school classroom.

  23. So, that's something that we say almost like a mantra every day.

  24. We will do everything decently and in order.

  25. What's most astounding to me about the moment in Peter's life that we're about to learn from,

  26. which would include a sharp rebuke from the Lord, is that it came right after one of the boldest declarations from Peter,

  27. saying, thou art the Christ, the son of the living God.

  28. And, of course, Peter knew that Jesus was important, but evidently Peter still had more to learn.

  29. The education of a disciple is never quite finished.

  30. So, in this passage, we learn that to live by the best priorities requires denying ourselves as we seek to do God's will for our lives.

  31. In John 4.34, it says,

  32. Jesus saith unto them, my meat is to do the will of him that sent me and to finish his work,

  33. telling them that even above the earthly need for food, the first priority is to complete God's will.

  34. So, we see here, first, a devotion to duty.

  35. In all aspects of life, Jesus is the paramount example for every believer.

  36. The central theme of all that he did on earth was simply this, that he came to fulfill the will of his Father.

  37. Even on the night before his crucifixion, we see him praying that exact thing, not my will, but thine be done.

  38. At the age of 12, Jesus had told Mary and Joseph and Luke, and he said unto them,

  39. How is it that you sought me? Wist ye not that I must be about my Father's business?

  40. And he kept this priority in its proper place throughout his entire life here on earth.

  41. In John 17.4, it says,

  42. I have glorified thee on earth. I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do.

  43. So, we see that Jesus had to go.

  44. In Matthew and Mark, Jesus taught his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem,

  45. that he must suffer, and he must be rejected, and that he will die.

  46. And we know that every detail, and we know that all the details of the excruciating path that laid before him.

  47. Luke chapter 9, verse 51 actually adds a detail.

    Luke 9:51

  48. It says,

  49. It came to pass, when the time was come that he should be received up,

  50. he steadfastly set his face to go to Jerusalem.

  51. This was literally his sacred duty,

  52. and he walked towards it with, as the Bible says, a steadfast determination.

  53. So, Christians must understand there are times when Christ calls us to go places

  54. where we might have to go suffer or pay a price for our faith.

  55. Though our human reaction is to look for an easy way out.

  56. And we think of Jonah. You know, God told him to go to Nineveh.

  57. And instead of going to Nineveh, where did he go?

  58. Tarshish.

  59. So, we must instead be willing to do the Lord's will, no matter what.

  60. In the Christian life, there will be times of hardship and suffering.

  61. Jesus actually promised that.

  62. You know, there's lots of promises in the Bible.

  63. People like to skip over that one quite a bit.

  64. John chapter 16, verse 33 says,

    John 16:33

  65. Patriarchs, prophets, and apostles all went through times of intense hardship.

  66. Severe and even deadly persecution carried on through the days of the early church,

  67. the dark ages, through all the different reformations that were happening,

  68. and into many countries even today.

  69. You know, I think of what's happening in Nigeria over these last couple months,

  70. where there's been really a mass, and there's no other way to describe it,

  71. so forgive me for being a little crass,

  72. but slaughter of Christians in their home and in their churches.

  73. And for a while, it was so bad that if you got on Google Images,

  74. and you just went over where churches were located in Nigeria,

  75. where you could see the dirt stained red from the blood of believers

  76. that were just slaughtered in the middle of their church services.

  77. Because terrorist groups, mainly Islamic terrorist groups,

  78. refused to allow them to worship the Lord.

  79. However, in 2 Timothy chapter 3, verse 12,

    2 Timothy 3:12

  80. it says,

  81. Today, Christ is looking for faithful soldiers of the cross

  82. who will go where he wants them to go.

  83. When we follow the Lord's commands, we please our Savior.

  84. Paul describes this in 2 Timothy chapter 2, verses 3 and 4,

    2 Timothy 2:3

  85. writing to Timothy there,

  86. He's telling them it's not going to get any easier.

  87. The more you serve the Lord,

  88. the more people are going to oppose you.

  89. He says,

  90. No man that woreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life,

  91. that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier.

  92. This type of soldier will receive the ultimate praise of,

  93. Well done, thou good and faithful servant.

  94. You know, this year marks 25 years since September 11th.

  95. Over 400 firefighters and law enforcement officers

  96. died trying to save others in the World Trade Center in New York City.

  97. The vast majority were not there in normal courses of their day

  98. or responding to a crisis in the immediate call to duty.

  99. Well, the Twin Towers inhabitants were fleeing.

  100. These heroes were running past them into the burning building,

  101. doing everything they could to save as many lives as possible,

  102. carrying all of the rescue equipment that they could handle

  103. as they ran up the stairs while others were rushing down.

  104. They could not have explained why they didn't stop to think about it.

  105. It was simply their job,

  106. and they did it with full acceptance of the risks.

  107. You know, following the Lord in the United States,

  108. we kind of have it pretty good.

  109. You know, we don't experience the things like they are in Nigeria

  110. or other parts of the world.

  111. But undoubtedly, you know, that time will come,

  112. so we need to be prepared for it.

  113. So, real quick, turn over to 1 Peter 4,

  114. and we're going to see what it means to suffer for Christ's sake.

  115. You know, the Bible talks a lot about suffering,

  116. and Peter, you know, writing this

  117. after he's experienced so much and learned so much from the Lord,

  118. it's easy as you read through the Gospels

  119. and then read Peter's own writings,

  120. you can almost hear the growth that he had

  121. from being, you know, quick to speak, slow to understand,

  122. probably a little arrogant.

  123. And when you read the two books that he wrote,

  124. 1 to 2 Peter,

  125. you find someone who is really thoughtful,

  126. slow to speak, understand.

  127. He's lived some life, and it's pretty evident.

  128. Starting in verse 12 in chapter 4,

  129. the rest of this chapter,

  130. it's kind of divided into two parts.

  131. So, starting in verse 12,

  132. and going down all the way through verse 19,

  133. we're not going to read all of it,

  134. but this is Peter's discussion here

  135. about the Christian and suffering.

  136. It says,

  137. Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial,

  138. which is to try you,

  139. though as some strange thing happened to you.

  140. But rejoice,

  141. inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ's suffering,

  142. that when his glory shall be revealed,

  143. ye may be glad with exceeding joy.

  144. If ye be reproached for the name of Christ,

  145. happy are ye,

  146. for the spirit of glory and of God resteth upon you.

  147. On their part,

  148. he is evil spoken of,

  149. but on your part,

  150. he is glorified.

  151. Now, he continues here,

  152. because he has a contrast between suffering for Christ's sake,

  153. which, that's a good thing.

  154. We can glory in that.

  155. And then he has a quick note in here,

  156. one sentence,

  157. where he talks about,

  158. there is another kind of suffering,

  159. because you want to be a dum-dum,

  160. you don't glory in that kind of suffering.

  161. It says,

  162. But let none of you suffer as a murderer,

  163. or as a thief,

  164. or as an evildoer,

  165. or as a busybody in other man's matters.

  166. Yet, if any man suffer as a Christian,

  167. let him not be ashamed,

  168. but let him glorify God on this behalf.

  169. So, you know,

  170. there's a lot of times

  171. when we give the devil

  172. a little too much credit

  173. for what's going on.

  174. You know, we can,

  175. in our own arrogance,

  176. think we're doing what we're supposed to be doing,

  177. and then suffer because of that,

  178. when it was never part of God's plan.

  179. And then we get all spiritual,

  180. and you know,

  181. we come to church,

  182. well, you know,

  183. it's been hard,

  184. but we're praying through it.

  185. Well, it probably wouldn't be hard

  186. if you just listened to God in the first place.

  187. So, don't give the devil more credit

  188. than he's due.

  189. Suffering for Christ's sake

  190. is a good thing,

  191. but suffering because

  192. we want to do something stupid

  193. is not anything to glory of.

  194. So next we see

  195. that Jesus had to die.

  196. Throughout time,

  197. God has required death

  198. in order for there to be a life,

  199. in order for there to be life.

  200. Since Genesis chapter 3,

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  201. we saw God slay an innocent animal

  202. to provide covering for Adam and Eve.

  203. blood has always been

  204. the only way of salvation.

  205. We saw it in the,

  206. when the Israelites

  207. were going to leave Egypt,

  208. you know,

  209. for the Passover,

  210. they had to slay an animal

  211. and put blood on the doorposts.

  212. In Hebrews chapter 9,

    Hebrews 9:22

  213. verse 22,

  214. it says,

  215. and almost all things

  216. are by the law

  217. purged with blood,

  218. and without the shedding of blood

  219. is no remission.

  220. Jesus' mission on earth

  221. was to die

  222. and shed his pure,

  223. innocent blood

  224. for the sin of mankind.

  225. Had he refused,

  226. we couldn't be forgiven

  227. of our sins

  228. and we would die

  229. without hope.

  230. We see in Romans chapter 5,

    Romans 5 chapter mention

  231. but God commendeth his love

  232. toward us

  233. in that while

  234. we were yet sinners,

  235. Christ died for us.

  236. Much more than being now

  237. justified by his blood,

  238. we shall be saved

  239. from wrath through him.

  240. For if,

  241. when we were enemies,

  242. we were reconciled to God

  243. by the death of his son,

  244. much more being reconciled,

  245. we shall be saved

  246. by his life.

  247. Now,

  248. it's a hard thing to remember,

  249. especially,

  250. you know,

  251. it's easy

  252. to care for someone

  253. when it's easy

  254. to care for someone.

  255. When you hear on the news

  256. about these people,

  257. like the Lindsay Clancy trial,

  258. you know,

  259. it makes me so,

  260. mad

  261. to see people

  262. celebrating what happened.

  263. But we still got to remember,

  264. Jesus died even for those people.

  265. And that he loves them

  266. just as much as he loves us

  267. sitting here in a church service.

  268. The people blaspheming

  269. God on the street corner,

  270. God still loves them

  271. and he still died for them.

  272. So that's something

  273. we got to remember.

  274. That

  275. they don't hate us,

  276. they hate God,

  277. but God loves them

  278. and we still need to share

  279. the love of Christ with them.

  280. Whether or not they accept it

  281. is up to them.

  282. That's not our job

  283. to make them believe,

  284. but it's our job

  285. to tell them.

  286. John chapter 12,

    John 12:23

  287. verses 23 and 24,

  288. And Jesus answered them saying,

  289. The hour has come

  290. and the Son of Man

  291. should be glorified.

  292. Verily, verily,

  293. I say unto you,

  294. except a corn of wheat

  295. fall to the ground and die,

  296. it abideth alone.

  297. But if it die,

  298. it bringeth forth

  299. much fruit.

  300. Christ knew there could be

  301. no salvation

  302. without sacrifice.

  303. In his song,

  304. Ten Thousand Angels,

  305. Ray Overholt

  306. was scripturally correct

  307. when he wrote that

  308. Christ could have called

  309. ten thousand angels

  310. to free him,

  311. but instead willingly went

  312. to the cross

  313. to suffer death.

  314. See that in Matthew

    Matthew 26:53

  315. chapter 26,

  316. verses 53 and 54.

  317. Thinkest thou that I cannot

  318. now pray to my Father

  319. and he shall presently give me

  320. more than twelve legions

  321. of angels?

  322. But how then

  323. shall the scripture

  324. be fulfilled

  325. that thus it must be?

  326. Christ lived and died

  327. fulfilling scripture.

  328. This was one reason

  329. he had to go to the cross.

  330. You know,

  331. Peter made a mistake

  332. that the Pharisees made

  333. just about every single time

  334. they would talk to Jesus.

  335. You know,

  336. the Pharisees weren't dumb.

  337. They were very smart people.

  338. And if we got into

  339. a biblical debate

  340. just based on like

  341. biblical knowledge,

  342. they would probably smoke us

  343. because they had

  344. almost the entire

  345. New Testament memorized.

  346. Now,

  347. did they apply it correctly?

  348. No.

  349. But if we had a sword

  350. drill competition,

  351. boom,

  352. they'd have it right there.

  353. And Jesus asked them

  354. multiple questions

  355. and it was usually

  356. the same question.

  357. So I need some volunteers here.

  358. Let's see,

  359. one,

  360. two,

  361. three.

  362. I need four volunteers

  363. to read a couple verses

  364. if you get anyone.

  365. Okay,

  366. you're going to have

  367. Matthew,

  368. be ready

  369. because I'm going

  370. to yell at you.

  371. Matthew 12,

  372. three.

  373. I need another one.

  374. Okay,

  375. Matthew 12,

  376. five.

  377. Matthew 19,

  378. four.

  379. So I went in

  380. Joe,

  381. Matthew 22,

  382. 31.

  383. So the mistake

  384. that Peter made

  385. is that he knew

  386. the Old Testament.

  387. He knew,

  388. you know,

  389. every Jew being brought up,

  390. it was tradition

  391. that they would learn

  392. these things

  393. at a very young age.

  394. So he knew

  395. what the Old Testament said,

  396. but yet,

  397. he still

  398. didn't apply it

  399. properly.

  400. So,

  401. when he was talking

  402. with Jesus,

  403. saying,

  404. Jesus,

  405. come on,

  406. you're not going

  407. to die.

  408. Well,

  409. Jesus told him

  410. multiple times,

  411. yeah,

  412. I am,

  413. but Peter just

  414. right over his head,

  415. I guess.

  416. So,

  417. first,

  418. we're going to hear,

  419. and be ready

  420. because I'm going

  421. to yell at you,

  422. Matthew 12,

  423. three.

  424. Okay,

  425. stop,

  426. stop,

  427. stop,

  428. stop,

  429. stop,

  430. sit down,

  431. sit down.

  432. Matthew 12,

  433. five.

  434. Stop,

  435. stop,

  436. stop,

  437. sit down.

  438. Matthew 19,

  439. four.

  440. Stop,

  441. sit down.

  442. You know what's coming,

  443. Joe.

  444. Matthew 22,

  445. 31.

  446. I haven't even done

  447. anything yet.

  448. Matthew 22,

  449. 31.

  450. Stop,

  451. stop,

  452. stop,

  453. okay,

  454. no,

  455. I'm just kidding.

  456. All right,

  457. stop,

  458. sit down.

  459. What's the phrase,

  460. everyone?

  461. Have ye not read?

  462. It wasn't a secret.

  463. Jesus didn't sneak up

  464. on the disciples

  465. and be,

  466. surprise,

  467. I'm going to die.

  468. Turn to Isaiah chapter 53.

    Isaiah 53 chapter mention

  469. I think you have it

  470. in your handout.

  471. Jesus can be seen

  472. on every page

  473. of the Old Testament,

  474. but one of the most

  475. vivid passages

  476. depicting him

  477. is in Isaiah chapter 53,

    Isaiah 53 chapter mention

  478. years and years

  479. and years

  480. before the cross.

  481. The prophet Isaiah

  482. wrote of this

  483. Lamb of God

  484. who would take away

  485. our sins.

  486. Now,

  487. Peter knew

  488. that Jesus was the Christ,

  489. so he should have known

  490. that this was talking

  491. about Jesus.

  492. Starting in verse 4,

  493. surely he hath borne

  494. our griefs

  495. and carried our sorrows.

  496. Yet,

  497. we did esteem him

  498. stricken,

  499. smitten of God

  500. and afflicted.

  501. But he was wounded

  502. for our transgressions,

  503. he was bruised

  504. for our iniquities,

  505. the chastisement

  506. of our peace

  507. was upon him.

  508. And with his stripes

  509. we are healed.

  510. All we like sheep

  511. have gone astray,

  512. we have turned

  513. everyone to his own way,

  514. and the Lord

  515. hath laid on him

  516. the iniquity

  517. of us all.

  518. He was oppressed

  519. and he was afflicted,

  520. yet he opened

  521. not his mouth.

  522. He is brought

  523. as a lamb

  524. to the slaughter

  525. and a sheep

  526. before her shearers

  527. is dumb,

  528. so he opened

  529. not his mouth.

  530. He was taken

  531. from prison

  532. and from judgment

  533. and who shall

  534. declare his generations?

  535. For he was cut off

  536. out of the land

  537. of the living,

  538. for the transgression

  539. of my people

  540. was he stricken.

  541. And he made his grave

  542. with the wicked

  543. and with the rich

  544. in his death

  545. because he hath done

  546. no violence.

  547. Neither was any deceit

  548. in his mouth,

  549. yet it pleased

  550. the Lord

  551. to bruise him.

  552. He hath put him

  553. to grief

  554. when thou shalt

  555. make his soul

  556. an offering for sin.

  557. He shall see

  558. his seed,

  559. he shall prolong

  560. his days,

  561. and the pleasure

  562. of the Lord

  563. shall prosper

  564. in his hands.

  565. Jesus was the one

  566. depicted in this passage

  567. and he fulfilled

  568. this prophecy

  569. when he was crucified.

  570. So Peter,

  571. have ye not read?

  572. And we make

  573. the same mistake.

  574. You know,

  575. we can over-spiritualize

  576. some issues,

  577. praying,

  578. asking God

  579. if we're supposed

  580. to do something

  581. that we probably

  582. know we should

  583. or asking God

  584. if we shouldn't

  585. do something

  586. that we know

  587. we shouldn't.

  588. And God is in heaven

  589. saying,

  590. have ye not read?

  591. He gave you the answer.

  592. The Lord was committed

  593. to fulfilling his duty

  594. to die on the cross,

  595. but Satan was determined

  596. to use any opportunity

  597. he could

  598. to deter the Lord

  599. from going.

  600. So we see

  601. a distraction

  602. from duty.

  603. Satan will use

  604. anything to dissuade

  605. and distract us

  606. from what we ought

  607. to do.

  608. If he can't get us

  609. to go against God

  610. totally,

  611. he'll settle

  612. for just getting us

  613. off track

  614. a little bit.

  615. You know,

  616. when a pilot

  617. is flying,

  618. they have to be

  619. very intentional

  620. on flying a specific path

  621. because if they start off

  622. even a few degrees

  623. from where they're

  624. intended to go,

  625. by the time they reach

  626. the end of their destination,

  627. they're going to be

  628. hundreds of miles

  629. off the mark.

  630. So Satan's goal

  631. isn't necessarily

  632. to make,

  633. you know,

  634. Christians stumble

  635. into some overt sin

  636. to, you know,

  637. decry from the cause

  638. of Christ,

  639. but if he can just

  640. get you distracted

  641. a little bit,

  642. time will do its thing

  643. and by the end goal,

  644. you're going to be

  645. way off of your mark.

  646. So sometimes

  647. the distractions

  648. are obvious

  649. and easier to combat.

  650. Other times

  651. they're subtle

  652. and sometimes

  653. those distractions

  654. can even come

  655. from people

  656. who are close

  657. to us

  658. or even genuinely

  659. love us.

  660. In his classic

  661. devotional work,

  662. My Upmost for His Highest,

  663. Oswald Chambers

  664. said the greatest enemy

  665. of the life of faith

  666. in God

  667. is not sin,

  668. but the good

  669. which is not good enough.

  670. The good

  671. is always

  672. the enemy

  673. of the best.

  674. Having discernment

  675. in a Christian life

  676. is not

  677. to discern

  678. between what is good

  679. and what is bad.

  680. That's easy.

  681. Even little kids

  682. know right from wrong.

  683. Discernment

  684. in the Christian life

  685. is trying to figure out

  686. what is good

  687. and what is best.

  688. The devil may not

  689. try to ensnare us

  690. with some major sin.

  691. If he can just

  692. distract us

  693. from the Lord's will

  694. for our life,

  695. he has succeeded.

  696. The scripture

  697. makes clear

  698. importance of

  699. staying on course

  700. in our own lives.

  701. See this in Proverbs

    Proverbs 4:20–27

  702. chapter 4

  703. verses 20-27.

  704. My son,

  705. attend to my words

  706. and climb thy ear

  707. into my sayings.

  708. Let them not depart

  709. from thine eyes.

  710. Keep them in the midst

  711. of thine heart.

  712. For they are life

  713. unto those that find them

  714. and health

  715. to all their flesh.

  716. Keep thy heart

  717. with all diligence

  718. for out of it

  719. are the issues of life.

  720. Put away from thee

  721. a froward mouth

  722. and perverse lips

  723. put far from thee.

  724. Let thine eyes

  725. look right on

  726. and let thine eyelids

  727. look straight before thee.

  728. Ponder the path

  729. of thy feet.

  730. Let all thy ways

  731. be established.

  732. Turn not to the right hand

  733. nor to the left.

  734. Remove thy foot

  735. from evil.

  736. As Jesus prepared

  737. to fulfill

  738. the Father's will

  739. at the cross,

  740. the devil tried

  741. to distract him

  742. by using one

  743. of his closest friends.

  744. So we see Peter

  745. gave a rebuke.

  746. When the Lord

  747. told his disciples

  748. of the events

  749. in the near future,

  750. Peter couldn't

  751. stay silent.

  752. He said,

  753. Be far from thee,

  754. Lord.

  755. He instead

  756. or he insisted,

  757. this shall not

  758. be unto thee.

  759. It's astounding

  760. to think of Peter

  761. trying to look God

  762. in the face

  763. and saying,

  764. no, you're wrong

  765. on this one.

  766. We know what's up,

  767. but no,

  768. you're not doing

  769. that one.

  770. He meant well

  771. and he truly

  772. loved Jesus

  773. and felt distressed

  774. to hear Jesus

  775. say that he would

  776. be crucified.

  777. And it's kind of strange.

  778. Hadn't Peter

  779. just confessed

  780. that Jesus

  781. was the Christ?

  782. But when Jesus

  783. told his disciples

  784. directly of the events

  785. that are about

  786. to happen,

  787. Peter became indignant

  788. at the prospect

  789. of losing his

  790. dearest friend

  791. and he refused

  792. to let it happen.

  793. Come what may,

  794. at this time,

  795. Peter attempted

  796. to distract the Lord

  797. from the direction

  798. he needed to go.

  799. The Strong's definition

  800. of the word here

  801. used in Matthew,

  802. translated rebuke,

  803. is to tax

  804. with fault,

  805. rate,

  806. chide,

  807. rebuke,

  808. or reprove.

  809. When addressing

  810. the Lord himself,

  811. this would seem

  812. to be outright disrespect,

  813. but we have seen

  814. and will see again

  815. Peter frequently spoke

  816. before he thought.

  817. Often in our human wisdom,

  818. we think we know

  819. better than the Lord,

  820. while we might not

  821. say it out loud,

  822. our attitudes and actions

  823. can betray us.

  824. We know that Christ

  825. has said,

  826. we know what Christ

  827. has said,

  828. but somehow we're going

  829. to justify

  830. going in our own direction.

  831. You know,

  832. a popular piece today

  833. is just follow your heart.

  834. You know,

  835. the heart wants

  836. what it wants.

  837. That's the dumbest thing

  838. I've ever heard in my life,

  839. and I tell my students

  840. that all the time.

  841. Like, that's stupid.

  842. That's a stupid thing to say.

  843. This, however,

  844. being a bad idea,

  845. Christians know

  846. that we're to follow God

  847. because our heart's feelings

  848. can deceive us.

  849. Feelings change

  850. all the time.

  851. You know,

  852. that's why our salvation

  853. is not grounded

  854. in how we feel.

  855. A very common

  856. issue,

  857. typically with younger children

  858. or someone who hasn't

  859. been saved a long time

  860. when doubts come

  861. if they were truly saved,

  862. you'll hear the phrase,

  863. well,

  864. I just don't feel saved.

  865. Well,

  866. the problem there

  867. is you're trusting

  868. in your feelings

  869. rather than what Jesus

  870. did on the cross.

  871. Here's a little

  872. bit of wisdom for you.

  873. Salvation has nothing

  874. to do with you

  875. because if it were about you,

  876. you wouldn't be able

  877. to keep it.

  878. So if you're trusting

  879. in anything else

  880. but then what Jesus

  881. did on the cross,

  882. you're going to have doubts

  883. and you're going

  884. to struggle

  885. and Satan's going

  886. to be able

  887. to throw you off track.

  888. Only what Jesus did

  889. is what matters.

  890. So something that,

  891. you know,

  892. at camp,

  893. you know,

  894. we deal with kids,

  895. well,

  896. I just didn't say

  897. the right things.

  898. Okay?

  899. What are the right things?

  900. What does it mean

  901. to pray the right prayer?

  902. What does God look at?

  903. The outward appearance

  904. or the inward appearance?

  905. He looks at your heart.

  906. Well,

  907. here's just a practical question.

  908. What if someone can't talk?

  909. How are they going to pray?

  910. God looks at the heart.

  911. Jeremiah 19,

  912. chapter 7,

  913. verse 9,

  914. the heart is deceitful

  915. above all things

  916. and desperately wicked.

  917. Who can know it?

  918. Proverbs chapter 3,

    Proverbs 3:5–7

  919. verses 5 through 7,

  920. trust in the Lord

  921. with all thine heart

  922. and lean not

  923. on thine own understanding

  924. and all thy ways

  925. acknowledge him

  926. and he shall direct

  927. thy paths.

  928. Be not wise

  929. in thine own eyes,

  930. fear the Lord

  931. and depart from evil.

  932. Throughout the Bible,

  933. many have argued

  934. to the Lord,

  935. this is not the way

  936. it's going to be.

  937. They've always found out differently.

  938. Cain brought an offering

  939. representing his own works.

  940. The Lord would not accept it.

  941. Saul attempted to kill David,

  942. his God-chosen successor.

  943. In the end,

  944. Saul was killed in battle

  945. and David became king anyway.

  946. Later,

  947. David's son,

  948. Absalom,

  949. tried to take the kingdom

  950. from his father

  951. but failed.

  952. Jeremiah wanted to quit preaching

  953. but the Lord

  954. wasn't finished yet.

  955. Jonah tried to flee

  956. from the presence of the Lord

  957. but found himself

  958. in the belly of a fish.

  959. Now Peter

  960. would find

  961. the exact same thing

  962. happening to him.

  963. So now we see

  964. Peter

  965. getting a rebuke.

  966. As the rest of the disciples

  967. looked on,

  968. Christ rebuked Peter.

  969. Get thee behind me,

  970. Satan.

  971. Jesus told one of his

  972. closest friends and disciples.

  973. Now,

  974. let's use some

  975. divine imagination here.

  976. How many of you,

  977. when you were younger,

  978. ever had

  979. your parent

  980. or guardian

  981. call you

  982. by your full

  983. legal name?

  984. Okay.

  985. Now when that happens,

  986. especially if you have siblings,

  987. it's like the air

  988. gets sucked out of the room

  989. because you know

  990. you're in trouble.

  991. Sometimes I'll

  992. memorize my students'

  993. middle names

  994. so when they're acting out

  995. I can call them

  996. their full legal name

  997. in the middle of class

  998. and undoubtedly

  999. it's like

  1000. an instant mood change.

  1001. Everyone goes

  1002. completely silent.

1003. So you can probably imagine

  1004. the other 11 disciples

  1005. standing there

  1006. as Jesus says,

  1007. get behind me,

  1008. Satan.

  1009. It probably went

  1010. dead silent.

  1011. And you can probably

  1012. imagine John

  1013. elbowing one of the

  1014. other disciples

  1015. like,

  1016. look at Peter now.

  1017. He really messed up.

  1018. So,

  1019. you can imagine

  1020. how much

  1021. this probably stung

  1022. for Peter.

  1023. What a way

  1024. to show gratitude,

  1025. Peter must have thought.

  1026. After all,

  1027. he had only spoken

  1028. out of love

  1029. and concern.

  1030. Or had he?

  1031. Think about it.

  1032. If we truly

  1033. love someone,

  1034. then we would want

  1035. exactly what

  1036. God wants

  1037. for that person.

  1038. Even if we don't

  1039. understand it.

  1040. Nothing more,

  1041. nothing less.

  1042. As we said before,

  1043. Satan's desire

  1044. is to get

  1045. God's people

  1046. off track.

  1047. Even if only

  1048. slightly.

  1049. Look back real quick

  1050. in 1 Peter

    1 Peter 5 chapter mention

  1051. chapter 5

  1052. and then look

  1053. down in

  1054. verse 8.

  1055. 1 Peter

    1 Peter 5 chapter mention

  1056. chapter 5.

  1057. This one isn't

  1058. in your handout.

  1059. Peter is writing

  1060. here.

  1061. He's giving a

  1062. warning.

  1063. He says,

  1064. Be sober,

  1065. be vigilant,

  1066. because your

  1067. adversary of the

  1068. devil,

  1069. as a roaring

  1070. lion,

  1071. walketh about

  1072. seeking whom

  1073. he may

  1074. devour.

  1075. And a couple

  1076. years ago,

  1077. I was listening

  1078. to a preacher

  1079. who was going

  1080. through this verse

  1081. and he pointed

  1082. out something

  1083. that I never

  1084. really noticed

  1085. before.

  1086. The second

  1087. to last word

  1088. in this verse

  1089. is the word

  1090. may.

  1091. Some Bible

  1092. translations

  1093. incorrectly

  1094. translated to

  1095. can,

  1096. but it was

  1097. very intentional,

  1098. God was very

  1099. intentional using

  1100. this terminology,

  1101. because this is

  1102. a word for

  1103. permission.

  1104. Walketh about

  1105. seeking whom

  1106. he may

  1107. devour.

  1108. When you're

  1109. saved and you

  1110. have the Holy

  1111. Spirit,

  1112. sin has no

  1113. more power

  1114. over you.

  1115. You only fall

  1116. when you're

  1117. drawn away of

  1118. your own lust

  1119. and entice.

  1120. That doesn't

  1121. mean Satan's

  1122. not going

  1123. to tempt

  1124. you.

  1125. Oh,

  1126. that's most

  1127. certainly going

  1128. to happen.

  1129. But we see

  1130. here a word

  1131. picture that

  1132. Peter's using

  1133. of the devil

  1134. as a lion.

  1135. And lions

  1136. hunt sneakily.

  1137. They don't

  1138. jump out

  1139. before they

  1140. have to.

  1141. They sit

  1142. and they

  1143. wait for

  1144. one elk,

  1145. gazelle,

  1146. whatever it is,

  1147. zebra,

  1148. to get

  1149. slightly off

  1150. track,

  1151. to wander

  1152. off because

  1153. now they've

  1154. just given

  1155. permission.

  1156. The lion

  1157. can hunt you

  1158. now.

  1159. If they're

  1160. in the pack,

  1161. if they're

  1162. following where

  1163. they're supposed

  1164. to go,

  1165. that lion's

  1166. not going to

  1167. go into the

  1168. middle of a

  1169. herd of a

  1170. bunch of wild

  1171. buffalo because

  1172. it's going to

  1173. get beat up

  1174. pretty bad.

  1175. But when one

  1176. goes slightly

  1177. off trail,

  1178. whether it's

  1179. distracted,

  1180. sick,

  1181. whatever it is,

  1182. that lion is

  1183. going to wait

  1184. and wait and

  1185. wait until it

  1186. now has the

  1187. opportunity to

  1188. pounce.

  1189. So the devil

  1190. isn't sitting

  1191. there with a

  1192. sign on the

  1193. street corner

  1194. saying,

  1195. come over

  1196. here and

  1197. sin.

  1198. He's just

  1199. sitting and

  1200. waiting and

  1201. waiting and

  1202. waiting until

  1203. you get slightly

  1204. off track to

  1205. now because

  1206. you've let some

  1207. sin in,

  1208. he now has

  1209. that permission

  1210. to devour.

  1211. And I can't

  1212. help but think

  1213. Peter had

  1214. learned from

  1215. the rebuke he

  1216. got from

  1217. Jesus of

  1218. trying to get

  1219. someone just

  1220. slightly off

  1221. track.

  1222. See,

  1223. if Jesus

  1224. had listened

  1225. to Peter,

  1226. he wouldn't

  1227. have gone

  1228. to Jerusalem

  1229. and died

  1230. on the

  1231. cross for

  1232. mankind's

  1233. sin.

  1234. Had Peter

  1235. succeeded in

  1236. preventing this,

  1237. Satan would

  1238. have had a

  1239. great triumph.

  1240. So in a

  1241. real sense,

  1242. whatever his

  1243. intentions were,

  1244. Peter was

  1245. doing the

  1246. work of

  1247. Satan.

  1248. Therefore,

  1249. he deserved

  1250. the strongest

  1251. rebuke the

  1252. Lord could

  1253. give.

  1254. Remember how

  1255. Jesus had

  1256. directly encountered

  1257. Satan previously

  1258. in Matthew 4

  1259. and Luke 4?

  1260. We have the

  1261. story of Christ's

  1262. temptation in

  1263. the wilderness.

  1264. And I'm not

  1265. going to get

  1266. all into that

  1267. too much,

  1268. as Ethan

  1269. spoke about

  1270. it this

  1271. morning.

  1272. But Satan

  1273. was tempted.

  1274. He went

  1275. through it,

  1276. and we have

  1277. an example

  1278. to follow.

  1279. So Jesus

  1280. understood it

  1281. as for what

  1282. it was,

  1283. the voice of

  1284. Satan,

  1285. when he heard

  1286. Peter say,

  1287. Be it far

  1288. from thee,

  1289. Lord,

  1290. this shall

  1291. not be

  1292. unto thee.

  1293. And immediately

  1294. he rebuked

  1295. his greatest

  1296. enemy,

  1297. who was using

  1298. perhaps his

  1299. closest friend.

  1300. Jesus'

  1301. rebuke went

  1302. even further,

  1303. piercing to

  1304. Peter's

  1305. heart.

  1306. Saying,

  1307. Thou art

  1308. an offense

  1309. unto me,

  1310. for thou

  1311. savorest not

  1312. the things

  1313. that be of

  1314. God,

  1315. but those

  1316. that be of

  1317. men.

  1318. The Webster's

  1319. 1828 dictionary

  1320. definition for

  1321. the word

  1322. savor is

  1323. to like,

  1324. to delight

  1325. in,

  1326. or to favor.

  1327. In essence,

  1328. Jesus was telling

  1329. Peter that he

  1330. did not like

  1331. or delight

  1332. in the things

  1333. of God.

  1334. God.

  1335. How often

  1336. did Peter

  1337. remember those

  1338. words in the

  1339. coming years?

  1340. I think it's

  1341. evident,

  1342. as you study

  1343. throughout his

  1344. life,

  1345. not everything

  1346. he did is

  1347. recorded in

  1348. scripture,

  1349. but we have

  1350. some historical

  1351. evidence on

  1352. how he

  1353. lived.

  1354. He took

  1355. this to

  1356. heart.

  1357. James 4,

  1358. 7 says,

  1359. Submit

  1360. yourselves

  1361. therefore to

  1362. God,

  1363. resist the

  1364. devil,

  1365. and he

  1366. will flee

  1367. from you.

  1368. Ephesians 4,

  1369. 27,

  1370. neither give

  1371. place to the

  1372. devil.

  1373. No one

  1374. enjoys being

  1375. rebuked because

  1376. we're naturally

  1377. full of pride,

  1378. and we hate

  1379. to admit it,

  1380. especially when

  1381. we're wrong.

  1382. Yet the

  1383. word of God

  1384. teaches us

  1385. how to

  1386. respond and

  1387. how not

  1388. to respond

  1389. when we

  1390. are rebuked.

  1391. Proverbs

    Proverbs 9:8

  1392. chapter 9,

  1393. verses 8 and

  1394. 9 says,

  1395. Reprove not a

  1396. scorner,

  1397. lest he

  1398. hate thee.

  1399. Rebuke a

  1400. wise man,

  1401. and he

  1402. will love

  1403. thee.

  1404. Give

  1405. instructions

  1406. to a

  1407. wise man,

  1408. and he

  1409. will yet

  1410. be wiser.

  1411. Teach a

  1412. just man,

  1413. and he

  1414. will increase

  1415. in learning.

  1416. You know,

  1417. it's really,

  1418. really easy

  1419. to argue

  1420. with a

  1421. smart person.

  1422. Really easy.

  1423. It's impossible

  1424. to argue

  1425. with a

  1426. dumb person

  1427. because they

  1428. refuse to

  1429. change no

  1430. matter what.

  1431. You know,

  1432. one thing

  1433. that I tell

  1434. my students,

  1435. and this is

  1436. a little humorous,

  1437. but it's,

  1438. I mean,

  1439. it still works.

  1440. This is,

  1441. in my classroom,

  1442. don't be

  1443. gross or

  1444. weird.

  1445. You know,

  1446. Peter,

  1447. in his

  1448. writings,

  1449. they can

  1450. kind of

  1451. be summarized

  1452. in just a

  1453. couple words,

  1454. which is

  1455. basically,

  1456. don't be

  1457. dumb.

  1458. Okay?

  1459. It's pretty

  1460. easy to

  1461. live the

  1462. Christian

  1463. life if

  1464. you just

  1465. don't be

  1466. dumb.

  1467. And Peter

  1468. knew that

  1469. more than

  1470. anyone else

  1471. because he

  1472. was the

  1473. perfect example

  1474. of ignorance

  1475. and stupidity

  1476. at times.

  1477. God

  1478. So,

  1479. because Peter

  1480. accepted the

  1481. Lord's

  1482. rebuke

  1483. and maintained

  1484. his love

  1485. and loyalty

  1486. for the

  1487. Savior,

  1488. he went

  1489. on to be

  1490. powerfully

  1491. used of

  1492. the Holy

  1493. Spirit

  1494. at Pentecost

  1495. through that

  1496. in Acts

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  1497. chapter 2,

  1498. where God,

  1499. working through

  1500. Peter,

  1501. brings thousands

  1502. of souls

  1503. to the

  1504. knowledge of

  1505. salvation.

  1506. And then

  1507. Peter,

  1508. of course,

  1509. as we know,

  1510. went to

  1511. write various

  1512. books of the

  1513. Bible.

  1514. So instead

  1515. of naturally

  1516. being filled

  1517. with pride

  1518. and were

  1519. rebuked,

  1520. we must

  1521. learn to

  1522. accept it

  1523. and grow

  1524. from it

  1525. as Peter

  1526. did.

  1527. In the

  1528. verses

  1529. immediately

  1530. following

  1531. Peter's

  1532. rebuke,

  1533. the Lord

  1534. reiterates

  1535. the necessity

  1536. of complete

  1537. self-denial

  1538. to follow

  1539. him.

  1540. So next

  1541. we see

  1542. a denial

  1543. for duty.

  1544. It's easy

  1545. to take

  1546. the path

  1547. of least

  1548. resistance,

  1549. giving in

  1550. to the

  1551. pressure

  1552. and requests

  1553. of the

  1554. world,

  1555. but often

  1556. a believer

  1557. must firmly

  1558. say no.

  1559. The Bible

  1560. is filled

  1561. with examples

  1562. of standing

  1563. firm against

  1564. the pull

  1565. of temptation.

  1566. The Christ

  1567. being our

  1568. best example.

  1569. We can also

  1570. see things

  1571. like in

  1572. Shadrach,

  1573. Meshach,

  1574. and Abednego

  1575. where they

  1576. were faced

  1577. directly with

  1578. death and

  1579. they refused

  1580. to compromise

  1581. on anything.

  1582. Standing

  1583. against the

  1584. world's

  1585. pressure is

  1586. not easy.

  1587. Only through

  1588. a close

  1589. relationship

  1590. with the

  1591. Lord do

  1592. we have

  1593. the stability

  1594. and power

  1595. to remain

  1596. steadfast,

  1597. which is

  1598. why it's

  1599. so important

  1600. to not

  1601. get off

  1602. that trail

  1603. even slightly.

  1604. The devil's

  1605. waiting,

  1606. ready to

  1607. pounce.

  1608. Psalm 16,

  1609. 8 says,

  1610. I have set

  1611. the Lord

  1612. always before

  1613. me because

  1614. he is at

  1615. my right

  1616. hand.

  1617. I shall

  1618. not be

  1619. moved.

  1620. The following

  1621. passages teach

  1622. one of the

  1623. greatest principles

  1624. any Christian

  1625. could learn.

  1626. Devotion to

  1627. duty requires

  1628. denial of

  1629. self.

  1630. Christ was

  1631. attempting to

  1632. teach Peter

  1633. and the other

  1634. disciples that

  1635. they must

  1636. always live

  1637. with a higher

  1638. calling in

  1639. mind.

  1640. We're not

  1641. left on

  1642. this earth

  1643. to indulge

  1644. ourselves

  1645. and to

  1646. eat,

  1647. drink,

  1648. and be

  1649. merry,

  1650. but rather

  1651. to serve

  1652. the Lord.

  1653. Paul,

  1654. writing in

  1655. Galatians,

  1656. said,

  1657. I am

  1658. crucified

  1659. with Christ.

  1660. Nevertheless,

  1661. I live

  1662. in the

  1663. life which

  1664. I now live

  1665. in the flesh.

  1666. I live by

  1667. the faith

  1668. of the Son

  1669. of God

  1670. who loved

  1671. me and

  1672. gave

  1673. himself

  1674. for me.

  1675. 2 Corinthians

    2 Corinthians 5:14

  1676. chapter 5

  1677. verses 14

  1678. and 15.

  1679. For the

  1680. love of

  1681. Christ

  1682. constraineth

  1683. us.

  1684. And it

  1685. continues on.

  1686. It is our

  1687. Christian duty

  1688. to deny

  1689. the flesh

  1690. with the

  1691. affections

  1692. and lust

  1693. to follow

  1694. and to

  1695. obey the

  1696. Lord

  1697. wholeheartedly.

  1698. So,

  1699. don't live

  1700. for today

  1701. because today

  1702. will soon

  1703. end.

  1704. The world

  1705. says eat,

  1706. drink,

  1707. and be merry

  1708. for tomorrow

  1709. we die.

  1710. Solomon wrote

  1711. that and

  1712. throughout the

  1713. book of

  1714. Solomon,

  1715. you see a

  1716. person who

  1717. is

  1718. just

  1719. complaining

  1720. about

  1721. life.

  1722. There's

  1723. no point

  1724. to anything

  1725. and only

  1726. at the

  1727. very

  1728. end

  1729. does he

  1730. get to

  1731. but

  1732. fear the

  1733. Lord and

  1734. keep his

  1735. commandments.

  1736. So,

  1737. we see

  1738. someone

  1739. wallowing

  1740. in their

  1741. self-pity

  1742. when even

  1743. though he

  1744. knows what

  1745. he's already

  1746. supposed to

  1747. be doing.

  1748. This was

  1749. the conclusion

  1750. of the

  1751. foolish

  1752. rich man

  1753. in one

  1754. of Christ's

  1755. parables.

  1756. He planned

  1757. to build

  1758. bigger barns

  1759. for his

  1760. abundance

  1761. and then

  1762. enjoy a

  1763. leisurely

  1764. future.

  1765. See this

  1766. in Luke

    Luke 12 chapter mention

  1767. chapter 12

  1768. starting

  1769. verse 16

  1770. and he

  1771. spake a

  1772. parable

  1773. unto them

  1774. saying

  1775. the ground

  1776. of a

  1777. certain

  1778. rich man

  1779. brought forth

  1780. plentifully

  1781. and he

  1782. thought within

  1783. himself

  1784. saying

  1785. what shall

  1786. I do

  1787. because I

  1788. have no

  1789. room

  1790. where to

  1791. store

  1792. or where

  1793. to bestow

  1794. my

  1795. fruits

  1796. and he

  1797. said

  1798. this

  1799. will I

  1800. do

  1801. I

  1802. will

  1803. put down

  1804. my

  1805. barns

  1806. and build

  1807. greater

  1808. and there

  1809. will I

  1810. bestow

  1811. all my

  1812. fruits

  1813. and my

  1814. goods

  1815. and I

  1816. will say

  1817. to my

  1818. soul

  1819. soul

  1820. thou

  1821. hast

  1822. much

  1823. goods laid

  1824. up for

  1825. many

  1826. years

  1827. take

  1828. thine

  1829. ease

  1830. eat

  1831. drink

  1832. and be

  1833. merry

  1834. but God

  1835. said unto

  1836. him

  1837. thou fool

  1838. this night

  1839. thy soul

  1840. shall be

  1841. required

  1842. of thee

  1843. then

  1844. whose

  1845. shall

  1846. those

  1847. things

  1848. be

  1849. which

  1850. thou

  1851. hast

  1852. provided

  1853. so he

  1854. that layeth

  1855. up treasure

  1856. for himself

  1857. is not

  1858. rich

  1859. toward

  1860. God

  1861. in

  1862. neither

  1863. case

  1864. was

  1865. eat

  1866. drink

  1867. and be

  1868. merry

  1869. the way

  1870. of God

  1871. we're

  1872. not to

  1873. live

  1874. for today

  1875. only

  1876. in the

  1877. grand

  1878. scheme

  1879. of

  1880. things

  1881. today

  1882. is

  1883. short

  1884. in an

  1885. insignificant

  1886. period

  1887. of time

  1888. you're

  1889. going to

  1890. be

  1891. dead

  1892. for a

  1893. lot

  1894. longer

  1895. than

  1896. you're

  1897. going

  1898. to

  1899. be

  1900. alive

  1901. so

  1902. what

  1903. happens

  1904. then

  1905. and

  1906. preparing

  1907. for

  1908. then

  1909. is a

  1910. lot

  1911. more

  1912. important

  1913. than

  1914. living

  1915. for

  1916. now

  1917. the

  1918. disciples

  1919. were

  1920. now

  1921. aware

  1922. of the

  1923. details

  1924. of the

  1925. coming

  1926. days

  1927. and the

  1928. verses

  1929. immediately

  1930. following

  1931. surely

  1932. the thoughts

  1933. of their

  1934. saviors

  1935. impending

  1936. crucifixion

  1937. Peter's

  1938. rebuke

  1939. and their

  1940. own

  1941. commitment

  1942. to

  1943. Christ

  1944. were

  1945. pressing

  1946. in their

  1947. minds

  1948. as they

  1949. listened

  1950. of living

  1951. for

  1952. today

  1953. we

  1954. should

  1955. purpose

  1956. to

  1957. live

  1958. for

  1959. eternity

  1960. in

  1961. perspective

  1962. so

  1963. do

  1964. live

  1965. for

  1966. tomorrow

  1967. in the

  1968. light

  1969. of

  1970. eternity

  1971. our

  1972. lifespan

  1973. is

  1974. extremely

  1975. brief

  1976. you know

  1977. I have

  1978. friends

  1979. that

  1980. you know

  1981. the older

  1982. I get

  1983. now that

  1984. I have

  1985. kids

  1986. it seems

  1987. you find

  1988. yourself

  1989. thinking

  1990. about

  1991. heaven

  1992. quite

  1993. frequently

  1994. it would

  1995. be a

  1996. good

  1997. day

  1998. when

  1999. we

  2000. can

  2001. see

  2002. old

  2003. friends

  2004. again

  2005. our

  2006. emphasis

  2007. should

  2008. be

  2009. to

  2010. invest

  2011. in

  2012. lives

  2013. so

  2014. they

  2015. can

  2016. last

  2017. for

  2018. eternity

  2019. we

  2020. know

  2021. that

  2022. God

  2023. inhabits

  2024. eternity

  2025. and

  2026. is

  2027. himself

  2028. eternal

  2029. we've

  2030. learned

  2031. that

  2032. before

  2033. throughout

  2034. the

  2035. Sunday

  2036. School

  2037. series

  2038. therefore

  2039. what is

  2040. important

  2041. in

  2042. eternity

  2043. is

  2044. important

  2045. to

  2046. God

  2047. and

  2048. consequently

  2049. should

  2050. be

  2051. important

  2052. to

  2053. us

  2054. we

  2055. must

  2056. live

  2057. with

  2058. eternity

  2059. in

  2060. view

  2061. we

  2062. could

  2063. say

  2064. that

  2065. eternity

  2066. consists

  2067. of

  2068. all

  2069. the

  2070. tomorrows

  2071. that

  2072. there

  2073. will

  2074. ever

  2075. be

  2076. so

  2077. make

  2078. today

  2079. count

  2080. by

  2081. spending

  2082. it

  2083. for

  2084. tomorrow

  2085. so

  2086. today

  2087. are

  2088. you

  2089. wisely

  2090. investing

  2091. the

  2092. talents

  2093. and

  2094. resources

  2095. the

  2096. Lord

  2097. has

  2098. given

  2099. you

  2100. today

  2101. are

  2102. you

  2103. serving

  2104. others

  2105. in

  2106. heaven

  2107. it

  2108. won't

  2109. matter

  2110. how

  2111. much

  2112. fun

  2113. you

  2114. had

  2115. how

  2116. the

  2117. desire

  2118. was

  2119. to

  2120. submit

  2121. to

  2122. the

  2123. will

  2124. of

  2125. him

  2126. that

  2127. sent

  2128. him

  2129. to

  2130. die

  2131. on

  2132. the

  2133. cross

  2134. and

  2135. that

  2136. should

  2137. be

  2138. our

  2139. priority

  2140. too

  2141. is

  2142. to

  2143. follow

  2144. and

  2145. obey

  2146. God's

  2147. will

  2148. regardless

  2149. of

  2150. the

  2151. consequences

  2152. see that

  2153. in

  2154. John

    John 6:38

  2155. chapter

  2156. 6

  2157. verse

  2158. 38

  2159. for

  2160. I

  2161. came

  2162. down

  2163. from

  2164. heaven

  2165. not

  2166. to

  2167. do

  2168. mine

  2169. own

  2170. will

  2171. but

  2172. the

  2173. will

  2174. of

  2175. him

  2176. that

  2177. sent

  2178. me

  2179. so

  2180. we

  2181. have

  2182. another

  2183. vital

  2184. part

  2185. of

  2186. the

  2187. education

  2188. of

  2189. a

  2190. disciple

  2191. as

  2192. the

  2193. Lord

  2194. described

  2195. the

  2196. details

  2197. of

  2198. his

  2199. impending

  2200. death

  2201. Peter's

  2202. mind

  2203. must

  2204. have

  2205. been

  2206. reeling

  2207. Peter

  2208. had

  2209. just

  2210. confessed

  2211. that

  2212. Jesus

  2213. was

  2214. the

  2215. Christ

  2216. and

  2217. now

  2218. he

  2219. thought

  2220. he

  2221. thought

  2222. he

  2223. was

  2224. to

  2225. accept

  2226. that

  2227. his

  2228. Lord

  2229. would

  2230. experience

  2231. such

  2232. a

  2233. gruesome

  2234. death

  2235. well

  2236. not

  2237. if

  2238. Peter

  2239. could

  2240. help

  2241. it

  2242. and

  2243. he

  2244. acted

  2245. without

  2246. thinking

  2247. and

  2248. began

  2249. to

  2250. correct

  2251. the

  2252. very

  2253. God

  2254. of

  2255. the

  2256. universe

  2257. who

  2258. when

  2259. Jesus

  2260. firmly

  2261. !

  2262. rebuked

  2263. him

  2264. Peter

  2265. learned

  2266. a

  2267. lesson

  2268. in

  2269. priorities

  2270. while

  2271. the

  2272. Lord

  2273. knew

  2274. going

  2275. to

  2276. the

  2277. cross

  2278. would

  2279. not

  2280. be

  2281. easy

  2282. he

  2283. did

  2284. it

  2285. anyway

  2286. as

  2287. we

  2288. see

  2289. Peter

  2290. learning

  2291. what

  2292. his

  2293. priorities

  2294. would

  2295. be

  2296. we

  2297. should

  2298. realize

  2299. that

  2300. God

  2301. has

  2302. a

  2303. plan

  2304. for

  2305. every

  2306. believer

  2307. it

  2308. is

  2309. only

  2310. when

  2311. we

  2312. follow

  2313. that

  2314. we

  2315. find

  2316. commitment

  2317. in

  2318. fulfilling

  2319. God's

  2320. plan

  2321. for

  2322. our

  2323. life

  2324. for

  2325. a

  2326. Christian

  2327. to

  2328. seek

  2329. contentment

  2330. outside

  2331. of

  2332. the

  2333. will

  2334. of

  2335. God

  2336. is

  2337. useless

  2338. in

  2339. vain

  2340. it

  2341. will

  2342. never

  2343. satisfy

  2344. it

  2345. will

  2346. never

  2347. be

  2348. found

  2349. anywhere

  2350. but

  2351. God's

  2352. will

  2353. for

  2354. us

  2355. to

  2356. do

  2357. his

  2358. will

  2359. we

  2360. must

  2361. die

  2362. to

  2363. self

  2364. and

  2365. deliberately

  2366. choose

  2367. to

  2368. make

  2369. God's

  2370. will

  2371. the

  2372. number

  2373. one

  2374. priority

  2375. in

  2376. our

  2377. life

  2378. Joe

  2379. why don't

  2380. you close

  2381. us

  2382. out

  2383. in

  2384. prayer
