  1. Alright, so we're in chapter 5, and let's read

  2. here the first couple of verses. Therefore, having

  3. been justified by faith, we have peace with God

  4. through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom also

  5. we have obtained our introduction by faith into

  6. this grace in which we stand. And we exalt in

  7. hope of the glory of God. And not only this,

  8. but we also exalt... In our tribulations, knowing

  9. that tribulation brings about perseverance and

  10. perseverance, proven character and proven character

  11. hope. And hope does not disappoint because the

  12. love of God has been poured out within our hearts

  13. through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.

  14. So this morning I want to begin here in verse

  15. 1 here where it says that we have peace with

  16. God through our Lord Jesus Christ. So we've been

  17. talking about justification. We talked last week

  18. about sanctification and our regeneration and

  19. all what those things mean and how we can be

  20. encouraged in those things. And so Paul then

  21. is going to go on here and talk about other things

  22. that have been accomplished through our justification.

  23. He says here, having been. So since we've been

  24. justified. We have peace with God. So we'll start

  25. right there. Peace with God. What's the opposite

  26. of peace, though? So when you think about having

  27. peace with God, that means at some point we didn't,

  28. right? So because we've been justified, we have

  29. peace with God. But before we were justified,

  30. we had no peace. So what were we before this?

  31. If you jump down to verse 10. It says, for while

  32. we were enemies, we were reconciled to God. So

  33. we were enemies. We were once enemies to God.

  34. If you remember back in chapter 1, verse 18,

  35. for the wrath of God is revealed from heaven

  36. against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of

  37. men who suppress the truth in unrighteousness.

  38. So before we were justified, the wrath of God

  39. abided upon us. Okay, so we were enemies. We

  40. were under the wrath of God. And then in Ephesians,

  41. we're told similar things. Ephesians 2 .15, Paul

  42. says, well, if we start in 14, he says, For he

  43. himself is our peace, who made both groups into

  44. one and broke down the barrier of the dividing

  45. wall by abolishing in his flesh the enmity, which

  46. is the law of commandments contained in ordinances.

  47. so that in himself he might make the two into

  48. one new man, thus establishing peace, and might

  49. reconcile them both in one body to God through

  50. the cross, by it having put to death the enmity.

  51. So all of those things that we're mentioning

  52. there, enmity, wrath, contrary to God. I want

  53. to make one thing, I want to make sure we're

  54. clear on this. What was the issue here? Was it

  55. just our... enmity towards God that we didn't

  56. want anything to do with God? Was that the issue?

  57. Or was it God was against us? That's the reality

  58. of it. It's not just that God's up there saying,

  59. boy, I just love everybody and I just wish they

  60. would all be saved and that they would just decide

  61. for me. That's not how God is. God's not in heaven

  62. looking down upon us. in our unconverted state,

  63. and just sitting there thinking, I just love

  64. all these folks. I just love them so much. That's

  65. not what the Bible says. That's not how the Bible

  66. portrays God in heaven. What does it say? The

  67. wrath of God. Verse 18, chapter 1. The wrath

  68. of God abides upon us. The wrath of God is on

  69. all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men. What

  70. is it? That's not us against God. That's God

  71. against us. The wrath of God is upon us in our

  72. unconverted state. If you view God as this loving

  73. God to all men in the sense that he loves his

  74. children, then you have a false view of God.

  75. Think of this. Charles Lyatt pointed this out.

  76. If God loves everyone the same, that means he

  77. loved Hitler just as much as he loves us. Where's

  78. Hitler? He's in hell. Is that the kind of love

  79. that we're looking for from God as our Father,

  80. that He would send us to hell? It's a totally

  81. warped view to view God in this way, that He

  82. has this same love for me and the guy on the

  83. street who hates Him. That's false. That's the

  84. foolishness of the world. That's the religion

  85. that is preached today, though, right? Smile,

  86. God loves you. No, He doesn't. Frown because

  87. the wrath of God is upon you. Be warned. God

  88. is against you. And there will be judgment for

  89. your sin. Now did God show love towards man?

  90. Yes. He sent His Son to die, right? We see the

  91. love of God displayed in all of that. But we

  92. see the wrath of God clearly portrayed in Scripture

  93. as God against us. But then again, it's the other

  94. also, right? We are against God. There is enmity

  95. between us. We hate God. Men in their sin hate

  96. God. They're not neutral. We've always said this

  97. time and again. It's one or the other. You're

  98. either for God or you're against God. You either

  99. love Him or you hate Him. You're not just out

  100. here saying, well, you know, God's great. That's

  101. wonderful. I don't hate Him. I don't love Him.

  102. I'm just kind of in this neutral zone. No, that's

  103. not how it is. So justification, one of the results

  104. of our justification is that we are at peace

  105. with God. So the relationship has changed. No

  106. longer are we against God and no longer is God

  107. against us. But it's more than just that God

  108. is not against us. God is for us. It's a totally

  109. different relationship now. You think of peace,

  110. this is the definition of peace. Removal of divine

  111. wrath, the end and absence of hostility. That's

  112. true. That is true. But it's more than that when

  113. we speak of this peace that we have with God.

  114. God is not neutral toward us. He is for us. Verse

  115. 31 of chapter 18. What does it say? I'm sorry.

  116. Chapter 8. Chapter 8, 31. What shall we say to

  117. these things? If God is for us, who is against

  118. us? He who did not spare his own son, but delivered

  119. him for us all. How will he not also with him

  120. freely give us all things? Who will bring a charge

  121. against God's elect? God is the one who justifies.

  122. Who is the one who condemns? And on he goes then.

  123. What's his point? We've been justified. Verse

  124. 1. No condemnation now. Verse 1 of chapter 8.

  125. And God is for us. God is on our side. God delights

  126. in us. God wants good for us. It's totally different.

  127. So this relationship has changed. We now have

  128. fellowship with God, right? Before we were at

  129. enmity, there was no fellowship. There was no

  130. relationship. There wasn't this desire for one

  131. another. All of that has changed in our justification.

  132. Our relationship with God has changed dramatically.

  133. So we are at peace with God. Let's read a few

  134. other verses that says the same thing but says

  135. it a little bit differently perhaps. So Ephesians

    Ephesians 2:13

  136. chapter 2 verse 13. But now in Christ Jesus you

  137. who were formerly far off have been brought near

  138. by the blood of Christ. For he himself is our

  139. peace. So we were far off. We were estranged.

  140. We were alienated. We were nowhere near God.

  141. But now where are we? We've been brought near.

  142. Near, we are at fellowship. We are at peace with

  143. God. We already read this. Verse 16, we've been

  144. reconciled to God. And then back in Romans 5,

    Romans 5:10

  145. verse 10, he says the same thing there. For when

  146. we were enemies, for while we were enemies, we

  147. were reconciled to God through the death of His

  148. Son. This word reconciliation, that's very similar

  149. to peace. They're synonymous. So when you see

  150. that word reconciled, think peace as well. We've

  151. been reconciled to God. What does that mean,

  152. reconciled? Talking to Dad, nobody knows this

  153. anymore because nobody does this anymore. But

  154. you know, you used to have to reconcile your

  155. checkbook. I remember doing it when I first got

  156. a checkbook. And you know, you're writing checks.

  157. And you've got to do all the math, right? You've

  158. got to make everything line up so that these

  159. two things are reconciled, your bank account

  160. and your checkbook. It means they've got to agree.

  161. Well, that's where we're at now. We've been reconciled.

  162. We agree with God. We're in agreement with Him.

  163. At one time, we weren't, right? God said one

  164. thing. We said another. God said do this. We

  165. did that. Totally contrary to one another, we've

  166. been reconciled. We've been brought into a relationship

  167. of agreement and of oneness. We've been reconciled

  168. to God. Another thing about this peace, and again,

  169. I hope we all understand this. We've said in

  170. all of these things that we've talked about,

  171. these aren't feelings. Our justification, our

  172. sanctification. Our regeneration. This isn't

  173. a feeling. We don't feel these things. And it's

  174. the same with this peace. Peace is not a feeling

  175. that we have towards God necessarily. We are

  176. at peace with God whether we feel like it or

  177. not. We have been justified whether we feel like

  178. it or not. And the result of that justification

  179. is peace. When we have all these feelings that

  180. come in. Right? We are all emotional. We have

  181. feelings. Some days I feel good. How are you

  182. doing today, Tim? Oh, I feel pretty good. Normally

  183. what I mean by that is, you know, yeah, I mean,

  184. things are fine. I'm not in this state of depression.

  185. I'm not in this state of ecstasy and everything's

  186. just wonderful. I'm good. I'm doing all right.

  187. But that's not what we're talking about, this

  188. feeling. It doesn't matter how we feel. We will

  189. feel good and we'll feel bad. We'll be tempted

  190. to despair. We'll be tempted to disbelieve these

  191. things. These are truths. These are realities

  192. that we need to remind ourselves. It doesn't

  193. matter how we feel. This is what God has said

  194. about me. What has He said about me? He's for

  195. me. Do I feel like He's for me today? Maybe not.

  196. Maybe I've got everything coming against me.

  197. I don't really feel. Like God is for me. But

  198. what does the Bible say? He is. And He's going

  199. to work all things out for my good. And for His

  200. glory. Whether I feel a certain way or not. Remind

  201. yourself of these things. Be encouraged in these

  202. things. These are objective truths. Realities

  203. accomplished by Christ. When we doubt these things.

  204. When we doubt our peace with God. What are we

  205. doing? What are we saying? seeing jesus wasn't

  206. enough what jesus said isn't really true what

  207. jesus accomplished he really didn't accomplish

  208. that's what we're saying and i know none of us

  209. would say that right we wouldn't really if we

  210. came out and said do you really think that jesus

  211. wasn't enough we'd all say no jesus was enough

  212. but when we doubt when we don't believe these

  213. things that's essentially what we're saying god's

  214. a liar right i mean that's that's what we're

  215. saying when we doubt We're saying, God isn't

  216. true. Don't doubt. When those feelings, when

  217. those emotions, when those doubts come, put them

  218. aside. Believe the truth. Believe what God has

  219. said. And hold on to that. Because that's all

  220. that matters. So it's not a feeling that we're

  221. talking about here. Now, we will have peace with

  222. God. True peace, this peace that we're speaking

  223. of, results in rest. and contentment in the heart

  224. of the believer. We can rest in this fact that

  225. I am at peace with God. And then what? We'll

  226. have the peace of God. Everybody always tries

  227. to make that clear distinction there. We're not

  228. talking about peace of God when we talk about

  229. peace with God. But the peace of God passes all

  230. understanding, Philippians 4. Right? We can be

  231. at peace in all situations. We can rest that

  232. God is sovereign. God is in control. And God

  233. will keep me in whatever comes. So true peace

  234. results in this peace of God in our hearts. We

  235. feel that. We experience that. We know that in

  236. our day -to -day lives. So this has been accomplished.

  237. We are no longer enemies. We are no longer at

  238. odds with God. We have been. We are at peace.

  239. I was reminded then, this whole idea of being

  240. brought near, that we are now children of God.

  241. What does that remind us of? What does it mean

  242. now that we weren't children of God, but now

  243. we are? What do we call that? Adoption, right?

  244. We've been adopted. That's not specifically in

  245. this passage, but it's true. We are now children

  246. of God. That is a result, another result of our

  247. justification. We have been brought near. We've

  248. been adopted into the family of God. We are his

  249. children. That in and of itself is another wonderful

  250. and encouraging thing to think about. We are

  251. the children of the king. He is our father. We

  252. have this relationship. It is no longer a relationship

  253. of. the judge and the law, right? Condemned under

  254. the law, the defendant and the sinner, but it's

  255. a relationship now of family, of love, of blessing.

  256. If you want a couple of verses, Romans 8, we'll

  257. just read them. Romans 8, 15. For you have not

  258. received a spirit of slavery leading to fear

  259. again, but you have received a spirit of adoption

  260. as sons, by which we cry out, Abba, Father. The

  261. Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that

  262. we are children of God, and if children, heirs

  263. also, heirs of God, and fellow heirs with Christ.

  264. Think of that, right? Heirs, right? What do the

  265. children receive? They receive this inheritance.

  266. They're heirs of something. Maybe here on this

  267. earth you're not going to get much as an heir

  268. of your father and mother, but as an heir with

  269. Christ of God. What are we going to receive?

  270. Heaven. Glory. That's our inheritance. Christ.

  271. Right? To be with Christ. That's the inheritance

  272. that awaits us as children. As a result of our

  273. justification. And then one more I wrote down

  274. here. Galatians 4. 4 through 7. But when the

  275. fullness of the time came, God sent forth his

  276. son, born of a woman, born under the law, so

  277. that he might redeem those who were under the

  278. law, that we might receive the adoption as sons.

  279. And because you are sons, God has sent forth

  280. the spirit of his son into our hearts, crying,

  281. Abba, Father. Therefore, you are no longer a

  282. slave, but a son. And if a son, then an heir

  283. through God. A total transformation has occurred.

  284. Totally new relationship. Father and son. Father

  285. and daughter. Totally different. Again, I said

  286. this last week, I'll say it again. What does

  287. he say here? All of this has been accomplished

  288. through our justification or by our justification,

  289. but through Jesus Christ. All blessings come

  290. through him. Our union with Christ. results in

  291. all of these things all right so he says that

  292. we have peace with god and then then he says

  293. that we've been introduced is what my uh the

  294. new american says um we have peace with god through

  295. our lord jesus christ through whom through christ

  296. we also have been introduced or have obtained

  297. our introduction by faith into this grace if

  298. you have the king james it says access we have

  299. obtained this access by faith into the grace

  300. in which we stand. I was reminded this morning.

  301. So what's he talking about here? What is this

  302. access? What is this introduction? And I think

  303. I said this last week. Access is better there

  304. because it gives the idea of not just an introduction,

  305. not just a one time, now all of a sudden I can

  306. come into the king, but a continual. Coming into

  307. the kingdom. We have access. We have this full.

  308. Unhindered. Access. Again. This is a reality.

  309. How many times. Do we struggle. Well. I shouldn't

  310. say we. How many times do I struggle to pray.

  311. Because I don't feel like I have access to God.

  312. My sin. Weighs me down. I feel guilty. I feel

  313. like I have no right to come to God and to ask

  314. anything of him. Who am I? I'm just terrible,

  315. right? No. That's the lies of the devil. I'm

  316. not terrible. Yes, I've sinned. I need to repent.

  317. But I have full access to the king. And I know

  318. full well that he'll be more than willing to

  319. forgive. In fact, he has already. Right? It doesn't

  320. matter how I feel. I have this access. To God.

  321. I was reminded of this. In Esther. We all know

  322. the story. Probably Esther. She's the queen.

  323. She's a Jew. And Mordecai comes up with this

  324. plot. To kill all the Jews. Hates all the Jews.

  325. He's an Agag. Which I didn't really realize what

  326. that meant. Until just a few years back. But

  327. Agag the king that was slain. By I forget who

  328. it was. Was it Samuel? I think Samuel killed

  329. him, but Saul was supposed to. Saul spared him.

  330. Anyway, he hates the Jews, and so he's got this

  331. plan to kill all the Jews. And so Esther, her

  332. uncle, says, go to the king and plead for us

  333. Jews. And what does she say? I can't, right?

  334. And Esther 4, she can't go because why? She doesn't

  335. have an introduction, right? She's not been invited.

  336. She has no access to the king. What happens if

  337. she goes? She might die. If the king doesn't

  338. put the scepter out to say, come on in, she's

  339. dead. And so she can't go. At least not boldly,

  340. not confidently. She can go, but she's timid.

  341. And so she does. She says, pray for me. Tell

  342. everybody. Pray and fast. I'm going to the king.

  343. And I might die because of it. That's where we

  344. were. We had no access to God. We had no standing

  345. before him. We'd not been given the scepter to

  346. come in. In fact, like we said, we were enemies.

  347. What should the king do when the enemy shows

  348. up in the court? Kill him. Be done with him,

  349. right? But no, now we have access. The scepter

  350. has been put out for us and it stands out so

  351. that any time that we desire to come to the king,

  352. we can come. So we've been changed in this regard.

  353. This access has been granted to us through Christ

  354. Jesus. He has given us this introduction. What

  355. has he introduced us to? What has he given us

  356. access to? We mentioned this last week into this

  357. grace. What is this grace that Paul is mentioning

  358. here? I've got a couple of definitions for you.

  359. When we think of grace, normally what do we think

  360. about? Unmerited favor, right? That's the simple,

  361. basic definition of grace. And that's true, but

  362. grace is so much more than that in Scripture.

  363. It is that at times, but it's used in multiple

  364. ways. And here, what Paul is saying here, he's

  365. talking here of the realm of grace. You've been

  366. under one rule, one realm. What realm was that

  367. in before we were justified? Where were we? Law.

  368. Sin. Right? That's where we were. That was our

  369. king and our master was sin. Satan. We were dominated

  370. by that. Now we've been transferred from that

  371. kingdom to this new kingdom where grace reigns.

  372. So we're talking here about The reign and the

  373. realm of grace. That's what we've been introduced

  374. into. That's what we have access to. That's where

  375. we are now because we've been justified. So,

  376. Douglas Moo says, not the manner in which God

  377. acts, as in merciful and gracious, or the gifts

  378. that he gives, but the state or realm into which

  379. the believer is transferred. We've been transferred

  380. from one realm to another. From sin, law, death,

  381. to the realm of grace, life. Thayer says, the

  382. spiritual condition of one governed by the power

  383. of divine grace. Governed. Now our lives are

  384. governed by this new power. No longer the power

  385. of sin, but the power of grace. We've said this

  386. before, what is grace? It's the power of God

  387. in our lives to overcome and many other things.

  388. So that's what Paul is saying here. We've been

  389. introduced. We have access. We are continually

  390. in this new realm of grace. Now, I just wrote

  391. down a few things here having to do with these

  392. two realms. The realm of grace and the realm

  393. of sin, I have these. They don't necessarily

  394. correlate as I put them on my page. Some do.

  395. We've been transferred from the realm of demand.

  396. Do, do, do. This is what's required of you. Always

  397. being beat over the head to the realm of supply.

  398. It's been given to us. We've been enabled. It's

  399. totally different. The law always said you're

  400. condemned. You've not been good enough. What

  401. does this new realm say? The grace of God is

  402. upon you. Christ has done it all. Rest. Rest

  403. in Him. You've been given all that you need.

  404. Totally different. From sin. What's the opposite

  405. of sin? To righteousness. From condemnation to

  406. justification. We were enemies. Now we're children

  407. and friends. From love. Our true love. Access

  408. to God versus rejection, enmity. Through this

  409. access we're heard. We can pray. What does God

  410. hear from the wicked? Nothing. They can't ask

  411. God of anything. Certainty and assurance in this

  412. realm of grace. That's one thing. We've mentioned

  413. this in the beginning. What is Paul's point of

  414. all of these things? What is he wanting to drive

  415. home? The hope of glory. The certainty of glory.

  416. certainty and assurance in this new realm. And

  417. then from the power of sin to the power to overcome

  418. sin. Two totally different realms. This is the

  419. new realm in which we're in. And we'll deal with

  420. some of these things that I mentioned here further

  421. on as we go through 5 and 6. This new realm that

  422. we are a part of in Christ because of what He

  423. has done for us. So, that is what has been accomplished

  424. in our justification. And then he says here,

  425. this grace in which we stand. Again, this word

  426. stand is an important word for us. We talked

  427. about it briefly when we went through Ephesians,

  428. the armor of God, Ephesians 6. Paul says, stand

  429. therefore. And he tells us here that we're standing

  430. in this grace. What does it mean to stand? To

  431. persist, to continue, to persevere. One who holds

  432. this position in the midst of the fight so as

  433. not to fall. Not to fall from faith. So that's

  434. the idea here. We're standing and we're not falling.

  435. We're unable to fall. Really. Because Christ

  436. has accomplished all of this for us. And Christ

  437. will see to it that all of these things continue

  438. to the end. So we're standing in this grace.

  439. We're standing in the power of Christ. We're

  440. standing through the power of grace. Grace will

  441. complete these things, will accomplish these

  442. things in our lives to the end. These are two

  443. things that have been accomplished because of

  444. our justification. These are two blessings, you

  445. could say. Again, this isn't all. There's more

  446. to come here. But two things. Peace with God.

  447. And a transfer from one realm to another. From

  448. one kingdom, kingdom of light, to the kingdom

  449. of darkness. From the kingdom of darkness to

  450. the kingdom of light. Right? Truly you've been

  451. transferred from one to the other. Now, again,

  452. I just want to emphasize, these are realities.

  453. These are sure and certain things. Paul is going

  454. to go on here. He's going to talk about hope.

  455. And hope is not this wishy -washy thing, right?

  456. I hope we get to go to Six Flags on Sunday. That's

  457. not what Paul means when he starts talking about

  458. hope. Paul's hope is confident expectation, certainty.

  459. When you see that word hope, that's what Paul

  460. is saying. All of these things give us hope that

  461. what? That we will make it to glory. That we

  462. will be with Christ. That our salvation will

  463. be completed one day. We've been saved, and yet

  464. there is a future salvation for us. The complete,

  465. final, done deal when we are in glory. It is

  466. certain and sure. That's what Paul is trying

  467. to emphasize for us here. The certainty of all

  468. of these things. They won't change. It'll never

  469. change. We can go out from here and sin. Our

  470. certainty is still the same. Glory. Again, Paul

  471. will go on to say, it doesn't give us a license

  472. to sin. Because we've been changed, that's not

  473. our desire. But that's the reality. We will stumble

  474. and fall. And yet our position in Christ is unchanging.

  475. The hope and glory that awaits us. It will not

  476. change. It will not be taken from us. Right?

  477. It's not something we've earned. It's been given

  478. to us all through Christ. Rejoice in these things.

  479. Be encouraged in these things as we walk through

  480. this world. Dwell upon them. Let them affect

  481. your daily life, your daily thought. Rejoice

  482. in them. Rejoice in Christ because He is the

  483. one who's accomplished all of these things. Amen.
