  1. This morning I'm gonna be preaching a follow-up to the sermon that I did on Wednesday night on a man after God's own heart

  2. So this is part two of a man after God's own heart

  3. And we were looking at what made David a man after God's own heart because not only is David given that title in scripture

  4. Which is a pretty amazing and powerful title to be given

  5. But also we see that out of all of the characters in the Bible. He has mentioned more than anyone else

  6. He's mentioned over eleven hundred times by name

  7. Which is more than any other person in the Bible. Moses is close with I think like

  8. 848 mentions or somewhere in that neighborhood and then it drops off down to the four hundreds two hundreds

  9. I mean really David has a huge

  10. Important spotlight in scripture. He's the man after God's own heart and you know

  11. I said on Wednesday night somebody told me that they didn't like David in the Bible

  12. They didn't like that care

  13. I'm just like do you even like the Bible because he's mentioned so much

  14. So we went through chapter 16 last time

  15. I'm not going to repreach that sermon about all those attributes

  16. But I want to look at the attributes that we see about David in chapter 17

  17. So that we can see why he's a man after God's own heart so that we can be the same way so that we can learn

  18. From these attributes look down to verse number 25

  19. It says the men of Israel said have you seen this man that has come up

  20. Surely to defy Israel is he come up and it shall be that the man who killeth him the king will enrich him with great

  21. Riches and will give him his daughter and make his father's house free in Israel

  22. So of course, you know the Philistines and the Israelites they're faced off in battle

  23. They're sort of at a stalemate. They're kind of just there for 40 days and nobody's really winning

  24. And so this champion Goliath comes out from the Philistine side and says, you know

  25. Send me one man to fight me in single combat

  26. And if I win then the Philistines win and you guys serve us and if he wins then the Israelites win

  27. The Philistines will serve you guys. So instead of the two armies fighting

  28. Let's just have one man fight one man to settle this

  29. Well, nobody has the guts to face off with Goliath even King Saul himself who's had in shoulders above all the people

  30. Doesn't believe apparently that he's any match for Goliath

  31. Everyone's afraid everyone's hiding and so they're trying to kind of sweeten the deal for whoever will do this by saying look

  32. If you go against Goliath, you're gonna be enriched with great riches. So you're gonna get financial reward

  33. You're gonna get the king's daughter as your wife

  34. So, I mean, this is pretty important because now you're the king's son-in-law

  35. I mean you've married into the royal family now and then your father's house will be free in Israel

  36. Which is probably referring to the fact that he's gonna be tax-free, you know, he doesn't have to pay taxes

  37. He doesn't have to do any kind of levy of manpower or anything. His father's house is is free in Israel

  38. Look what David responds to this in verse 26 says and David

  39. Spake to the men that stood by him saying what shall be done to the man that killed this Philistine and

  40. Take it the way the reproach from Israel for who is this uncircumcised

  41. Philistine that he should defy the armies of the living God. So he's interested in the rewards

  42. He's saying like hey, tell me again what I'm gonna get in the showcase here

  43. What am I gonna win here if I defeat Goliath?

  44. But ultimately saying, you know, I don't like the fact that this uncircumcised

  45. Philistine is defying the armies of the living God

  46. so he's clearly

  47. Contemplating getting in there doing this fight and winning the rewards for himself now

  48. Of course, here's the funny thing we just read in the chapter that David is obviously the younger brother

  49. His older brothers have been sent to go fight in this battle

  50. He seems to have been considered maybe a little bit too young, you know

  51. So he's staying back with the sheep the oldest three brothers are at an age where it's appropriate for them to go

  52. To battle with Saul whereas David is still considered a little bit too young

  53. So it's like what in the world out of all of these seasoned veterans and military men, you know

  54. David the youngest the least likely who's really not even part of the army

  55. He literally just shows up to bring food and treats to his brothers and to the captain and to just kind of check in

  56. All of a sudden he's just like hey, let's go put me in coach. He's not even on the team

  57. So point number one about why David was a man after God's own heart

  58. Is that he wanted to achieve great things for God and to get the rewards that go along with that

  59. He wanted to do something great for God and get the rewards

  60. It made me think of the Apostle Paul saying I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in

  61. Christ Jesus go if you would to Hebrews chapter number 11 Hebrews chapter number 11

  62. We're gonna come back to first Samuel 17 throughout the sermon

  63. But we're gonna look at a lot of stuff in the New Testament as well Hebrews chapter 11

    Hebrews 11 chapter mention

  64. He wanted to do something big for God and he wanted the rewards that went along

  65. He's present toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus

  66. Of course Jesus Christ said at the very end of the Bible behold

  67. I come quickly and my reward is with me to give every man

  68. According as his work shall be look at Hebrews 11 24 by faith Moses when he was come to years

  69. Refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter

  70. Choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season a

  71. Steaming the reproach of Christ

  72. Greater riches than the treasures in Egypt for he had respect under the recompense of the reward

  73. See he's thinking about the reward not on this earth, but the reward in heaven not

  74. Temporarily being a big shot in Egypt being the son of Pharaoh's daughter

  75. Getting all the accolades of this world and succeeding in the eyes of this world

  76. No, he had respect unto the recompense of the reward. He said you know what?

  77. Getting reproached for the name of Christ being criticized maligned for the name of Christ in this life is worth it

  78. Because rejoice and be exceeding glad greater your rewards in heaven and he had respect to the recompense of the reward

  79. He's not trying to just live for the here and now and enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season

  80. No, he wants to do something big for God. He wants to suffer for Christ so that he could get the rewards

  81. He esteemed the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt

  82. But not only does God promise to reward us when he returns

  83. Not only are we laying up for ourselves?

  84. Treasures in heaven and not on the earth

  85. But God also does actually reward us in this lifetime right here and now the Bible's clear on that

  86. Go if you would to mark chapter number 10 mark the gospel of mark chapter 10 while you're turning there

    Mark 10 chapter mention

  87. I'm going to read for you from Proverbs 11 30 it says the fruit of the righteous is a tree of life and

  88. He that when its souls is wise

  89. Behold the righteous shall be recompensed in the earth

  90. How much more the wicked in the center?

  91. I mean even in this lifetime if you do right God is going to reward you God's going to bless you even with temporal blessings and

  92. Even in this lifetime right now wicked people are going to have bad things happen to them and it's not going to go well for them

  93. They're not going to be blessed even in this life according to Proverbs 11 31

  94. Now while you're turning to mark 10, there's a parallel passage in Matthew 19 verse 27

    Matthew 19:27

  95. Then answered Peter and said to him behold we have forsaken all and followed the what shall we have there for so?

  96. Peter says look we forsook everything. We're following you. What do we get for doing that?

  97. Look at mark 10 verse 28 Peter began to say unto him low we have left all and a followed thee right?

    Mark 10:28

  98. Look what Jesus answers him verse 29 and Jesus answered and said barely

  99. I say to you there is no man that it's left house or brethren or sisters or father or mother or wife or

  100. children or lands for my sake in the Gospels

  101. but he shall receive a

  102. Hundred fold now in this time right so we're not even talking about when you get to heaven the next life

  103. We're talking about in this time. He will receive a hundred fold

  104. Houses brethren sisters mothers children and lands notice

  105. He doesn't say wives because you're only allowed to have one wife

  106. So he he can't be like hey, I'll give you a hundred fold of wives now this it's not the way it works

  107. He says and lands for my sake in the Gospels

  108. He says sorry at the end of verse 30. He says children and lands with

  109. Persecutions and in the world to come eternal life. So you say like look you got eternal life coming up

  110. You're going to heaven for all eternity. That's great

  111. But even now in this life, I'm going to reward you a hundred fold

  112. Whatever you give up for the cause of Christ, you're going to get a hundred fold now

  113. This is different than the so-called prosperity gospel or the health and wealth gospel

  114. Because they will tend to tell you that you're just going to succeed and do great and everything's going to go well for you

  115. As long as you have faith and name it claim it

  116. They're missing this part that says with persecutions

  117. God's not saying everything's going to go your way. He's not saying you're not going to have serious problems

  118. health problems relationship problems persecution maybe even prison maybe even beatings and different things that God says

  119. Will happen to those who believe and many of these same apostles went through those things

  120. It's not like people like Peter James and John didn't get imprisoned or martyred or whatever

  121. So he's saying with persecutions

  122. But what does he mean when he says I'm going to give you a hundred fold houses brother and sisters

  123. He's saying look. Yeah, maybe physical family members will burn you and disown you

  124. But you've got brothers and sisters in Christ, you know for every brother that burns you and forsakes you or

  125. You know betrays you or whatever you got a hundred other brethren, you know for whatever

  126. Guest house that you wanted to have up in the mountains and in Hawaii and on the beach or whatever houses you give up

  127. You're gonna have as a zealous Christian a hundred different houses because you pretty much are gonna have your friends everywhere

  128. You go your soul winning buddies your brothers and sisters in Christ

  129. I mean think about it if you're a zealous soul winning servant of God

  130. You pretty much go all over the country and all over the world and you got all kinds of places to stay you got houses to

  131. Go hang out at and have dinner and spend the night because you've got a network of people that are serving God with you

  132. And so God's got something better for you. Yeah, but I don't really own those houses. Well, who cares?

  133. You know, it's so funny. I've noticed that little kids are obsessed with like they have to own everything

  134. You know, it's so it'll be like hey, you can use this whenever you want. Yeah, but is it but is it mine?

  135. Do I own it? I'm like, well, it doesn't really matter because you can use it whenever you want, you know

  136. And and it's like, you know my son this morning

  137. I'm swinging my son all over on the swing this morning and he's saying like hey dad

  138. Can you get me my own swing and it's it's only just him on the swing and I'm sorry

  139. Can I get my own swing? I'm like, well, no because I said, you know

  140. We're not just all gonna have our own swing because then that would just be like nine swings or something

  141. It's just too many swings. It doesn't make any sense, you know

  142. But but but you can swing in the swing whenever you want son

  143. But but kids are lights like no, it's got to be all mine or whatever

  144. But but at the end of the day, that's kind of an immature attitude because at the end of the day, you know

  145. We're gonna all lose everything eventually anyway

  146. Everything that we see is temporal everything's temporary, you know, yeah, you own your house

  147. But you know what some day it's gonna turn to dust

  148. Some day it's gonna be burned up, you know at the end of the day

  149. All that matters is that you got a nice place to stay right now

  150. Whether you own it or rent it or whether you're just staying with somebody

  151. Hey, if you've got a nice bed and a pillow to put your head on and climate control and good food in the fridge

  152. Having food and rain let us be with her with content. We don't have to necessarily be the owners of all these things

  153. Houses brother and sisters father

  154. Mother, you know, God's gonna provide you with just amazing fellowship

  155. That's better than whatever physical family member has, you know burned you because of the cause of Christ

  156. If you're suffering for Christ's sake in the gospel, he's saying I'll reward you right now

  157. And so and so David is looking at this as you know, I want to do something great for God and I want to get the rewards

  158. You know, we want the heavenly rewards

  159. We want the rewards on this earth and a lot of people would say like oh you're doing it for the wrong reasons

  160. If you're doing it for the rewards really

  161. Because the Bible seems to constantly be motivating us with rewards

  162. Hey, my reward is with me to give every man according as his work shall be

  163. Lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven

  164. Why would it be wrong to be motivated by wanting to do something great for God and earn some rewards?

  165. It's not so that's number one about David

  166. Let's look at point two about David back in first Samuel 1726 and

  167. David's fake to the men that stood by him saying what shall be done to the man that killeth this Philistine and

  168. Take it the way the reproach from Israel for who is this?

  169. Uncircumcised Philistine that he should defy the armies of the living God

  170. Number two is that David is personally offended by an attack on God and by an attack on the people of God

  171. Right the reproach on Israel. He feels that personally like hey

  172. How dare this guy speak against the people of God?

  173. How dare this guy defy the living God and defy the armies of the living God?

  174. Now if you want to go to John chapter 2 in the New Testament

    John 2 chapter mention

  175. John chapter 2 in the New Testament, so we said number one he wanted to do something great for God

    John 2 chapter mention

  176. You want to get those rewards?

  177. Number two, he's personally offended by the attack on God and on God's people

  178. In Psalm 69 verse 9 it says this for the zeal of thine house hath eaten me up and

    Psalms 69:9

  179. The reproaches of them that reproach thee are falling upon me. He's saying you know when people

  180. Say something against God. He's basically said I took that personally

  181. You know when people criticize the house of God. I took that personally, right?

  182. He cared about the reproach of God's people

  183. He's personally offended by the attack on God and his people look at John chapter 2 verse 13

    John 2:13

  184. And the Jews Passover was at hand and Jesus went up to Jerusalem and found in the temple those that sold

  185. Oxen and sheep and doves and the changes of money sitting and when he had made a scourge of small cords

  186. He drove them all out of the temple and the sheep and the oxen and poured out the changers money and

  187. Overthrew the tables and said to them that sold doves take these things hence make not my father's house and house of

  188. merchandise he's saying look you guys have

  189. Perverted and corrupted the house of God because you're selling things in the house of God now

  190. There's nothing wrong with selling things. There's nothing wrong with selling sheep and doves. There's nothing wrong with changing money

  191. But the problem is when you turn God's house into a house of merchandise, which is why nothing has ever bought or sold here at our church

  192. It's why when we have activities

  193. They're always free and whenever we have any things that we're giving out as far as like t-shirts and hats and

  194. Books and CDs and DVDs those are obsolete now

  195. But back when we did hand out a lot of DVDs and flash drives and different things, you know, it's always been free

  196. We're not like oh you got to pay for the sermon CD. Oh

  197. You got to buy a Bible. No, we're giving you the Bible for free. We've got the New Testament for free

  198. I mean, I'm telling you in the old IFB you have to buy everything. I

  199. Mean I went to an independent fundamental Baptist church and you had to buy the tracks that you use out soul winning

  200. You'd buy a little pack of a few tracks for a buck so to go soul winning for a few hours

  201. You're gonna spend three four bucks on the tracks. I

  202. Mean who goes the warfare at his own charge

  203. So what the Bible says like why would I have to pay?

  204. For the invitations to hand out soul winning, but it's just anytime there's any food if there were doughnuts in the old

  205. IFB it's like you got to buy those doughnuts and it's a fundraiser to send the kids to camp or blah

  206. It's always selling you something the books are for sale

  207. The Bibles are for sale the CDs are for sale and again

  208. I'm not saying it's wrong to sell those things

  209. Somewhere else and that's why Jesus's answer is take these things hence the word hence means from here

  210. He's not saying what you're doing is bad per se. He's saying take it somewhere else

  211. And by the way, you shouldn't come to church and go around promoting your business and peddling your wares and

  212. Going around I mean some people just join a church just for the Tupper Party

  213. To get the Tupperware Party and the and the pampered chef and the vitamins and stuff look

  214. I'm glad you're doing all that stuff somewhere else

  215. But the house of God is not a house of merchandise now Jesus is clearly mad about this

  216. Now Jesus is not a hothead who just loses temper at the drop of hat

  217. He's slow to anger because the Bible tells us that that's why we know that he didn't just blow up

  218. Because he sat down and he literally

  219. manufactured a whip

  220. You know now I've never manufactured my own whip

  221. But you know, I'm assuming this is gonna take some time to sit there and get the cords and make it into a scourge

  222. And he's sitting there and making it, you know, and this is this is premeditation

  223. This is not a crime of passion

  224. Of course, it wasn't a crime at all because he's Jesus and what he's doing is right

  225. But he's sitting there and premeditating this and he made a scourge of small cords

  226. And then he goes into the house and I mean, he's clearly upset. He's flipping over the tables

  227. He's dumping out their money. He's cracking the whip literally driving people out with a whip

  228. swinging a whip at people and

  229. Look at the disciples reaction to this. This is the Bible verse that pops into their mind from Psalm 69 verse 9

    Psalms 69:9

  230. It says in John 2 17 his disciples remembered that it was written the zeal of thine house had eaten me up

  231. They're like wow, this reminds me of that Bible verse that says the zeal of thine house had eaten me up

  232. Meaning that Jesus was just so eaten up

  233. It made him so mad

  234. Because he was zealous for the house of God and you know what if you are zealous as a Christian for the house of God

  235. Then you're gonna be offended when the house of God is being corrupted

  236. When it's being perverted when it's being corrupted and when it's being slandered and maligned

  237. And reproached right that's what he's because he said the zeal of thine house has eaten me up and the reproaches of them

  238. That reproached he fell on me. It's like hey

  239. That offends me

  240. You know you talk about the church that way you talk about God that way you talk about the Bible that way

  241. It's like, you know, I'm personally offended by that

  242. Do not I hate them? Oh Lord that hate thee and I'm not I grieve with them that rise up against thee

  243. you know the zeal of God's house should eat us up and

  244. We should be personally offended by blasphemy against God and people trashing and slandering our church and the people of God

  245. That should offend us

  246. So we said number two about David. He was personally offended at the reproach of God's people

  247. But number three go back to first Samuel 17

  248. He saw the cause of Christ as bigger than himself

  249. So number one he wants to do great things for God and he wants to get rewards

  250. But at the end of the day, he sees that he's part of a bigger cause than himself

  251. He's not in it for personal glory

  252. But rather he's a part of something bigger than himself by serving Christ look at verse number 27

  253. The people answered him after this man are saying

  254. so shall it be done to the man that killeth him and

  255. Eliabah's eldest brother heard when he spake unto the man and

  256. Eliabah's anger was kindled against David and he said why came as thou down hither and with whom as thou left those few sheep in the wilderness

  257. I know thy pride and the naughtiness of thy heart for thou art come down that thou mightest see the battle and

  258. David said what have I now done? You know it was like what in the world is there not a cause and

  259. So David is answering here and saying look

  260. I'm not doing this for myself. I'm not in it for myself

  261. Isn't there a cause is there not a cause like isn't there a reason?

  262. For me to be fired up for me to be offended for me to be saying these things

  263. But here's what you're gonna find is that when you seek to do great things for God and earn the rewards

  264. When you take up the cause of Christ people will frequently accuse you of just seeking personal glory

  265. Being arrogant and this is the stupidest word on the planet. I hope I never hear it again in my life

  266. Does everybody know what word I'm about to say the most stupid annoying word in the English language that people just can't stop using all

  267. Day every day in 2026 America

  268. Narcissist

  269. Narcissist like every single woman has every ex-boyfriend is a narcissist every ex-husband is a narcissist

  270. Every pastor's a narcissist. It's the stupidest most meaningless word on the planet

  271. And if I never hear it again, it'll be too soon

  272. But that's what people will do they'll look at anybody who wants to do something big for God and try to accuse them of

  273. seeking personal glory and

  274. That's what Eliab is saying like oh, I know you're pride. I know how proud you are

  275. You just came down here to see the battle. You're just here for the action

  276. You're just here for attention. You're just here because you're proud and full of yourself and David points to the cause

  277. You know, well, isn't there a cause isn't there a reason to be fine? It's not me. I'm not the reason

  278. What have I now done?

  279. Isn't there a cause here something greater than ourselves?

  280. Now go to John chapter 7 and here's the other thing people don't like it when you outdo them

    John 7 chapter mention

  281. Or threaten to outperform them and this is so stupid because here's the thing if you actually cared about the cause

  282. You would want the people around you to outperform you

  283. I mean, I hope every single person in the church just gets more people saved than I do

  284. Read the Bible more than me just doesn't like why would I want people to do less than me?

  285. That's stupid if you actually cared about the cause of Christ if you actually cared about people getting saved

  286. Then you'd be thinking about the cause and you wouldn't see us as being in competition

  287. With each other and you wouldn't see us as being in competition with other good Bible believing churches

  288. We want them to get twice as many

  289. Salvation's is us do twice as many missions trips preach twice as good as sermons as pastor Anderson. Amen

  290. Is there not a cause?

  291. We want the cause of Christ to go forward

  292. So it's about the cause not about individual personal glory

  293. But Jesus actually got accused of this even Jesus himself

  294. Because look what they told Jesus in verse 3 his brother in there foresaid unto him

  295. John chapter 7 verse 3

    John 7:3

  296. Depart hence and go into Judea that the disciples also may see the works that thou doest for there's no man that do

  297. With anything in secret and he himself watch this seeks to be known

  298. Openly if thou do these things show thyself to the world for neither did his brother and believe in him

  299. So Jesus brother and didn't believe in him

  300. So they're making fun of him and saying like oh you want to be a big shot

  301. You want to be known openly go show yourself to the world the reason they're saying this them is because there's like a

  302. warrant out for Jesus arrest where the Jews are looking for Jesus to kill him and

  303. If he goes to Judea openly

  304. They're gonna kill him and his brother are just like trying to provoke him and taught him to just go to Jerusalem

  305. Anyway, and put his life in peril of being killed now

  306. Obviously, eventually Jesus is gonna lay down his life, but his hour has not yet come

  307. And so he is keeping a low profile at times because it's not the right timing

  308. But his brethren are accusing him of seeking his own glory. Oh

  309. You just want to be known openly jump down to verse 18

  310. He that speaketh of himself

  311. Seeketh his own glory

  312. But he that seeketh his glory that sent him the same is true and no unrighteousness is in him

  313. and then he explicitly says in the next chapter look at chapter 8 verse 50 and I

  314. Seek not my own glory

  315. Right, so he says look I am not seeking my own glory, but they're accusing him of seeking his own glory

  316. Right if he were in 2026 to be a narcissist, you know, you just oh, he's just so prideful

  317. Oh, he just wants a grand eyes man and personal glory, but that's not true

  318. Well, guess what? Whatever they said about Jesus, they're gonna say about you if you follow Jesus

  319. If they called the master of the house Beelzebub how much more shall they call them of his household?

  320. And so if they persecuted me, they'll persecute you. That's what the Bible says and so think about David

  321. Picturing the Lord Jesus Christ David's brethren don't believe in him

  322. They're making fun of him. They're accusing him of seeking his own glory. Then you fast forward to Jesus

  323. He is made fun of by his brethren and accused of seeking his own glory

  324. Flip back a couple pages to John chapter 3

    John 3 chapter mention

  325. You see we as Christians we should never be in it for ourselves or seeking our own glory

  326. There's no room for ego in the Christian life for us to be out there trying to impress people and get accolades on this earth

  327. It's about the cause David

  328. Saw the cause of Christ as

  329. bigger than himself

  330. Okay, and that's how we should be to look at John chapter 3 look at John the Baptist

    John 3 chapter mention

  331. Here's what John the Baptist said in verse 28 you yourselves bear me witness that I said I'm not the Christ

  332. But that I am sent before him

  333. He that hath the bride is the bridegroom

  334. But the friend of the bridegroom which standeth and here with him

  335. Rejoice it greatly because of the bridegroom's voice this my joy therefore is fulfilled

  336. He must increase but I must decrease John John the Baptist saying look this is not the John the Baptist show

  337. This is the Jesus show and I am not the bridegroom. I am not the main event here

  338. Jesus is the main event. I'm the friend of the bridegroom. I'm

  339. Rejoicing at the bridegroom's happiness, and I'm not trying to make it about myself. It's about him

  340. I must decrease he must increase and that should be our attitude in the Christian life of hey

  341. It's about the cause of Christ. It's about people getting saved. It's about the gospel going forth to the whole earth

  342. It's about the word of God being faithfully preached

  343. So it shouldn't matter if it's me preaching it or someone else preaching it or whoever preaching it

  344. We want the message and the truth to get out. I

  345. Mean go if you would do Philippians chapter 1 and you know what's funny is that all these X and I of B losers

    Philippians 1 chapter mention

  346. They they still preach like 90 some percent of my doctrine

  347. I mean

  348. I could click on any of these guys sermons and I feel like I'm listening to myself verbatim for like half the sermon

  349. You know so at the end of the day

  350. Whether we like these people or not obviously I don't appreciate people

  351. slandering me attacking me

  352. Trashing me and you know ruining my good name not that I've had one for a long time

  353. But at the end of the day though these people are still

  354. Even if they are in it for the wrong reasons even if they're arrogant prideful

  355. Even if they have wrong motives and even if they've shown themselves to lack character

  356. They are still actually

  357. Preaching tons of biblical truth that they literally learned from moi and so at the end of the day

  358. You know God could still use

  359. That to get the message out at the end of the day these people literally they break from us because of their ego

  360. But then at the end of the day, they're still preaching post-trib

  361. pre-wrath

  362. anti-scientists same gospel same salvation, you know some of them go into heresy, but

  363. Some of them continue to preach a lot of true things

  364. It doesn't mean I recommend their churches because I don't doesn't mean I support them because I don't but at the end of the day

  365. Hey, if they get people saved great if they straighten people out on the rapture great and people who hate us

  366. And will never be friends with us. We'll probably be friends with them

  367. You know and so therefore maybe God's got a plan and all this and we just need to just hey, whatever

  368. Look at Philippians 1 15 some indeed preach Christ even of envy and strife and some also of goodwill

  369. The one preach Christ of contention

  370. Not sincerely look there are people out there that are in the ministry for the wrong reasons

  371. Preaching for the wrong reasons and look supposing to add affliction to my bonds

  372. Not only these people in the ministry for the wrong reasons. They desire harm to come to Paul

  373. They want to hurt Paul they want to destroy Paul

  374. But they're still preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ even as they do this rotten activity of trying to hurt and destroy and afflict Paul

  375. They want to add affliction to my bonds, but then he's saying other people are preaching out of love

  376. Knowing that I'm set for the defense of the gospel other people realize that I'm a true minister of Christ Paul saying and

  377. They're preaching the gospel out of love what then not withstanding every way whether in pretense or in truth

  378. Christ is preached and I there and do rejoice and will rejoice

  379. You know the apostle Paul he influenced a ton of people. He got a bunch of people saved

  380. He founded a bunch of churches. He had a massive influence on people

  381. But then he turns around says all they which are in Asia have turned away from me

  382. But I guarantee all those Asia churches are still preaching all that Pauline doctrine

  383. You know they're still preaching all the same stuff

  384. I mean you got you got Cassandra McMurtry a couple days ago holding up a marriage license and saying

  385. This is the consent form

  386. This is this is consenting to sex is here's this marriage license. It's like yeah, it is

  387. That's what I've been saying

  388. These people can't help but have subconsciously learned some real stuff from me. I

  389. Mean that's funny. That's hilarious. All right. I don't want to get off on that but wow

  390. Philippians chapter 2 verse 17 flip over one page

    Philippians 2:17

  391. Yeah, and if I be offered upon the sacrifice and service of your faith

  392. I joy and rejoice with you all he's saying look if I end up being a victim if I end up getting

  393. Sacrificed if I end up getting offered for the sacrifice and service of your faith well good for y'all

  394. I joy and rejoice with you all unfortunately. Here's the thing most people aren't going to appreciate what you do for them

  395. Here's the thing when Jesus healed ten lepers

  396. Nine of them didn't say thank you one of them came back to say thank you and he was a Samaritan and

  397. Jesus is like what this one foreigner comes back to say thank you and

  398. Where are the nine? Where is everybody else? Look we go out and get a bunch of people saved

  399. They're not necessarily going to join the church and yoke up with us and actually get in the trenches with us and go

  400. Soul winning with us and preach the gospel with us, you know tons of people you're gonna do stuff for them

  401. You're gonna bless them you're gonna get them saved you're gonna disciple them

  402. You're gonna teach them and they're gonna turn around and have zero gratitude to you

  403. And they're gonna throw you under the bus and they're not gonna care about you or ever do anything for you

  404. And you know what at the end of the day though, it doesn't matter

  405. Because at the end of the day you still did that stuff for Christ those people are still saved

  406. They're still going to heaven you got them saved. They're going to heaven if they have a weird attitude toward you

  407. Well, I guess that'll straighten out by the time they get to heaven. I

  408. Mean, I remember you know my parents being upset when I was growing up because they would really get into a church and

  409. Really just give and financially give and donate their time and energy and my dad's doing electrical work on buildings

  410. And then the churches would apostatize the churches would lame out the churches would liberal out

  411. And it's like oh man, or you'll give a bunch of money to a missionary and then find out that the money didn't even get to the missionary

  412. He wasn't even receiving the money because it was being skimmed off the top and embezzled locally

  413. You know it can it can disgruntle you or you give a bunch of money to a missionary and you find out

  414. He's he's not even working and he's preaching another gospel and he's a bozo at the end of the day

  415. You got to do the work that you do for the Lord

  416. For Christ and you can't expect the people that you're ministering to to always appreciate you or thank you

  417. Sometimes you're gonna you're gonna do something for somebody you're gonna help them out and they're not gonna remember it

  418. They're not gonna care

  419. They're gonna turn around and hurt you and attack you and not even care that you got them saved

  420. But at the end of the day there's you still got them saved

  421. You did it for Christ people are still going to heaven and even these backslidden loser Christians

  422. They still probably get somebody saved like once in a blue moon

  423. Right. I mean even loser backslidden Christians get somebody saved every once in a while or witness to somebody every once in a while

  424. And I'm just thankful for every person who gets saved

  425. Every person who goes to heaven is a blessing, you know, and so at the end of the day this is life unfortunately

  426. We are sometimes gonna have to be personally sacrificed and the cause goes forward the cause of Christ

  427. Salvation's continue to happen. Amen. Now that doesn't mean that we should be

  428. Disloyal rotten people with bad motives

  429. We should be the ones serving out of love and knowing that the Apostle Paul set for the defense of the gospel

  430. But at the end of the day, you know, it's just unfortunately the world's not a perfect place

  431. Go to 1st Corinthians chapter 4

  432. 1st Corinthians chapter 4 because remember, what are we talking about this morning? David's a man after God's own heart

  433. What's so great about David anyway? Well number one. He wants to do something big for God and he wants the rewards

  434. number 2 he's personally offended by the attack on God and God's people

  435. Number 3 he sees the cause of Christ as bigger than himself. He's not just in it for himself

  436. It's about the nation of Israel. It's about the cause. It's about Christ. It's about the church

  437. Because if you're serving God and you're in it for yourself, you're gonna be real disappointed

  438. You know because if in this life only we have hope in Christ, we're of all men most miserable, you know

  439. And if you expect to get accolades for doing right, well, that's the people in the Bible. That's not how it worked

  440. Moses is just dealing with a bunch of stiff neck rebels. Paul is dealing with a bunch of stiff neck rebels

  441. It's just that's just that's just people man

  442. Look at first Corinthians 4 verse 8. This is Paul talking to the church of Corinth now. You're full now

    1 Corinthians 4:8

  443. You're rich you have reigned as kings without us

  444. And I would God you did raid that we might also reign with you. It's Paul's attitude is like hey

  445. I want to win win. I want you guys to thrive. I want to thrive. I want us all to be blessed. Let's all reign as kings

  446. But unfortunately the Corinthians don't necessarily have that attitude

  447. He said in 2nd Corinthians 12 15 stay there in 1st Corinthians 4 but in 12 15 of 2nd Corinthians

  448. He said I will very gladly spend and be spent for you though the more abundantly. I love you the less I be loved

  449. He's like I love you guys, but the more I love you the less you love me

  450. That's pretty sad, but that's the way the world works many times

  451. You know, there's a saying and I know some people hate this saying but unfortunately

  452. It's true that no good deed goes unpunished, you know, that's sad but true

  453. He says for I think that God had set forth us the apostles last

  454. As it were appointed to death for we are made a spectacle under the world and to angels and to men

  455. We are fools for christ sake. I mean we're he's saying look

  456. We are just seen as total idiots and trash were mocked were made fun of we're a spectacle to the world

  457. And then what's funny is that you have pastors today in

  458. 2026 that think that they can be popular and loved of the world and serve Christ at the same time

  459. What Bible are they reading?

  460. Because I got 1st Corinthians 4 right in front of me. You got in front of you

  461. We're fools for christ, but you're wise in christ

  462. We are weak, but you're strong

  463. You're honorable, but we're despised even under this present hour

  464. We both hunger and thirst and are naked and that's buffeted. It's not buffet. They're hungry. Okay

  465. There's no buffet is buffeted and have no certain dwelling place

  466. And labor working with our own hands being reviled. We bless being persecuted. We suffer it being defamed

  467. We in treat we are made as the filth of the world

  468. And are the off-skowering of all things under this day every time I read this verse

  469. I think of a commercial in the 80s

  470. That said nobody ever says I want to be a junkie when I grow up

  471. Who saw that commercial?

  472. All right, you know, so it says it shows this guy running and it's like I want to be a track star

  473. And then you see he's running from the police

  474. And it's like the cop is like putting his hand on his shoulder and he's like nobody ever says

  475. I want to be a junkie when I grow up

  476. And I always read this and I think I always think to myself

  477. Nobody says I want to be the filth of the world and the off-skowering of all things when I grow up

  478. You know, but it's like if you say I want to be a pastor when I grow up

  479. That's basically what you're saying

  480. I mean am I making this up or is it right in front of you in the bible right here

  481. This is what it means to be a preacher of god's work. No, look, you could be a half-in half-out milk toast preacher

  482. This won't apply to you

  483. But if you want to shake things up you want to be the apostle paul you want to do something great for god

  484. You want to be david?

  485. Yeah, this is going to apply unfortunately

  486. I write not these things to shame you but as my beloved sons I warn you

  487. He's just saying look i'm just warning you

  488. You know maybe you guys are just over there reigning as kings. We're hungry. You're full. You guys are doing awesome

  489. We're struggling. Well. I'm just warning you that if you serve god you're next

  490. And then he says this for though you have 10,000 instructors in christ

  491. Yet have you not many fathers for in christ jesus i've begotten you through the gospel. He's saying look i won you guys to christ

  492. Wherefore I beseech you be followers of me. So he's saying yeah, y'all should be following me

  493. But at the end of the day whatever

  494. Because you know what at the end of the day i'm serving christ

  495. And at the end of the day a lot of people are going to turn on you and forsake you

  496. But they're still saved and they're still

  497. Getting people saved maybe not as much as you would like or whatever but hey, you know christ is preached

  498. I'm at least going to rejoice in that

  499. So david had this attitude, you know, there's a cause bigger than myself. It's not the steven anderson show

  500. It's not the insert your name here show. It's not the john the baptist show. It's not the king david show

  501. It's not the apostle paul show. It's the jesus christ show

  502. And we've got to understand that he must increase we must decrease and serving god is yeah

  503. God's going to reward you and with persecutions. He'll give you 100 fold the houses and brethren and sisters

  504. But you know what you're also going to go through hard things and at the end of the day personal aggrandizement is not on the menu for christians, unfortunately

  505. That's life

  506. So go back to chapter 17 verse 30. We're going to see the fourth thing about david

  507. Is that he doesn't let the naysayers get him down?

  508. Right because we said number one he wants to do something big for god get the rewards number two

  509. He is personally offended by people reproaching christ and the people of god

  510. Number three he sees the cause of christ as bigger than himself. It's not about him

  511. And number four he doesn't let the naysayers get him down

  512. Right all these negative people all the people that have turned on and again

  513. Like I said, my parents were discouraged at times when I was growing up when they

  514. poured their life into a church and then the church went south

  515. But at the end of the day that didn't stop them from going to the next church

  516. And pouring themselves into the next church. It's just you know, that's life

  517. Don't let the naysayers get you down

  518. Don't get discouraged from serving god just because of the bozos and the ungrateful jerks

  519. And the people who don't appreciate you. Hey, you know what at the end of the day

  520. You just keep pushing for the cause of christ

  521. Look at verse 30

  522. It says and he turned from him

  523. So he says to his brother is there not a cause and then he turned from him toward another

  524. And watch this he spake after the same manner

  525. So does he let his brother stop him from what he's trying to do here? No, he just turns around and just says the same thing

  526. He spake after the same manner and the people answered again after the former manner now. Look, I like what it says here

  527. He turned from him toward another

  528. So if somebody is dragging you down

  529. Just turn from that person toward another

  530. There's plenty of fish in the sea

  531. Focus on positive people in your life who actually and encourage you

  532. And actually build you up and believe in you

  533. Now obviously there are certain people that we're stuck with in our lives

  534. Right obvious and this could be a good or bad thing. You're stuck with your spouse. Amen

  535. You know just about oh, you know, my spouse is dragging me down. I'm out of here. No

  536. Wrong

  537. I don't care if we live in america or not the bottom line is you know marriage is permanent

  538. Obviously, you're a child. You're stuck with your parents

  539. You know for better or for worse your parents for better or for worse your spouse

  540. But you know what lots of other people in life

  541. You don't have to have those people in your life

  542. And if they're constantly dragging you down

  543. Tearing you down and this could be siblings or other people that are just

  544. Negative and dragging you down

  545. Just turn away from those people and focus on the people in your life that are building you up that believe in you that are encouraging you

  546. You know and and don't let those people drag you down

  547. And you know, it's interesting is that later

  548. David's brethren do believe in him

  549. And they do support him and they're on his side and same thing with jesus brother

  550. So i'm not saying to just totally nuke these people

  551. Because you know a lot of these people might down the road be your friends and allies

  552. But sometimes you just need to like put people on pause

  553. Or take a break from certain people

  554. And just focus on people that are helping you encouraging you blessing you and possibly because i'm telling you we're all human

  555. And if we're surrounded by negativity

  556. It can get to us eventually no matter how strong we are

  557. You know, and this is why i'm constantly i block people on social media any day i go on social media

  558. There's not a day that i go on social media that i'm not blocking someone

  559. My greatest fear is that someday it'll tell me like you've reached a limit of how many people you can block

  560. And it's like why do you block everybody? Oh, you just want to live in an echo chip

  561. Here's why i want to block everybody because i don't want to be surrounded by people

  562. Trashing me and solding me and criticizing me because it's just going to put me in a bad mood

  563. Right, it's just like i don't need the negativity in my life

  564. Of people just i don't want any time i go on the computer or go on social media to be torn down

  565. You know and and look i'm all for getting a diversity of opinions and seeing what people have to say

  566. But i'm not for somebody just telling me

  567. Your trash

  568. F you it's just like that's just not productive

  569. It's just not helpful or people just lying and trashing me

  570. It's just like you know and you need to learn how to use that block button

  571. And and just because then you just have a pleasant time and what sort of things are true

  572. What sort of things are honest what sort of things are just what sort of things are pure what sort of things are lovely

  573. What sort of things are a good report if there'd be any virtue and if there'd be any praise

  574. Think on these things and look i understand there's a time to engage the enemy and fight the good fight and all that

  575. But you can't just all day every day be surrounded by negative trash people without affecting you

  576. You know, it's better just to stay away from people like that and obviously in real life

  577. You just literally just turn from him to another

  578. And by the way if there's somebody that as far as I know our church is at perfect harmony right now

  579. But if there's someone in the church that you have a problem with just stay away from that person

  580. You don't need to get in some big fight with the person

  581. You don't have to make it all a bunch of drama

  582. Just just turn away from that person and focus on someone that you get along with better

  583. And maybe down the road y'all will see eye to eye

  584. Because sometimes yesterday's enemies will become today's friends

  585. So you know always keep an open mind that you can overcome evil with good

  586. And eventually people can come over to your side

  587. So, you know, you just got to back off from some people put them on pause put them on snooze take a break from people

  588. That are just dragging you down even relatives family just if they're not a blessing to you

  589. And it's just like you know find some friends that are more godly and more encouraging

  590. And you know the the bible says in romans 8 31

  591. What shall we then say to these things if god before us who can be against us?

  592. If god before us who can be against us so god plus you makes a majority

  593. Okay, so again as long as god's on your side

  594. That should be enough for you to just push forward and keep going

  595. And so that's the thing is that david sees that there's a cause bigger than himself

  596. It's the cause of christ and he's not going to let the naysayers from his family relatives whatever drag him down

  597. He's just going to turn to another guy

  598. You know, and it's funny when i was learning how to preach and when i was at bible college

  599. This is a tip that they gave us for preaching to a large crowd

  600. They said find someone in each section that encourages you

  601. So find someone on the left that encourages you find someone in the middle that encourages you find someone on the right

  602. That encourages you and while you're preaching look at those people

  603. Because i'm telling you sometimes when i'm preaching

  604. There are people that i look out in the crowd and they look like they're really enjoying the sermon

  605. And they look like they're hanging on every word. They're locked in they're enjoying it

  606. They like it and so those are people that i tend to want to look at

  607. Because it makes me feel good while i'm preaching and then i don't you know

  608. lose confidence because other people are yawning

  609. Or goofing off or just zoning out or just looking annoyed or upset

  610. And if i look at those people then it can make me like doubt myself and be like

  611. Is there is there something wrong with my sermon or like am i am i saying something

  612. Is this boring, you know, you know and it bothers me

  613. And so they said pick someone on the left middle and right

  614. Because that way you're not just looking at one person or one part of that

  615. You know that way you're kind of scanning the crowd

  616. But look at people that look like they like the sermon

  617. So you can stay positive so you can stay encouraged, but you know what that's just good advice just for life

  618. You know just be around people

  619. That actually seem like they care about you

  620. And are on the same page and people that love god and people that are and i'm not talking about yes men

  621. You know i mean i look i was on the phone with pastor shelly last night

  622. And we're just like arguing and you know my wife's always horrified whenever she hears me talking to my friends because she's like

  623. How do you guys talk to each other i'm like this is how men talk, okay

  624. You know because women are just really like sensitive and careful

  625. And men are just men just kind of like tell each other how it is

  626. So we're past shelly and i were just like arguing about the bible for like an hour last night

  627. And we're just like arguing and going back and forth

  628. And we're just like

  629. It's like it's not about being a yes man

  630. But at the end of the day, we both love each other. We're both motivating each other

  631. We both want each other to succeed. We're both friends. We're both for each other

  632. It doesn't mean that we're not going to tell each other. Hey, you're wrong on this

  633. I don't think you should preach that. I don't think your doctrine is right on this. You need to straighten this, you know

  634. It's not about being a yes, man

  635. It's about being someone who actually is positive and cares about you and is for you not trying to drag you down

  636. And hinder you from serving christ

  637. You know, it's one thing to have somebody who challenges you in a positive constructive and we all grew up with this term constructive criticism

  638. Where somebody says and look, I've called up other of my pastor friends and said, yeah

  639. I don't really like what you said there. I don't think you should have said that

  640. Here's what you know because it's just like we're men and we can handle it

  641. And you know if my pastor friends can't handle that and if I can't handle them

  642. Criticizing me and they can't handle me criticizing them then at the end of the day

  643. It's just like I just don't even really want to be friends with these kind of snowflake people that we can't just like

  644. Hash out doctrine. What's even the point?

  645. If we can't express ourselves and hash out doctrine, but here's the thing. We respect each other

  646. We love each other. We're for each other. We're not getting up and publicly trashing each other

  647. To the world

  648. We're getting we're getting together and trying to help each other and iron sharpen iron and look

  649. I'm not always right. He's not always right. My friends aren't always right. I'm not always right

  650. It goes both ways. He's corrected me on things. I've corrected him on things

  651. Same with other friends pastor mahiab pastor wrestle. Whoever, you know, we it's it's a symbiotic thing

  652. Normal people who actually love their friends understand how you can have conversations

  653. Where you challenge one another and it's done out of love

  654. And it's done just because you care about truth. It's not about

  655. You know tearing someone down

  656. Right and so elai up here. Is he really offering anything constructive to david

  657. Oh, I know how proud you are. I know the naughtiness of you. You just came to see them

  658. It's just all slander and trash and unhelpful

  659. Those are the kind of people you need to turn away from

  660. Someone who actually has a constructive criticism. That's great. Amen. That works. No issue there

  661. And so at the end of the day, I'm gonna stop there. I have tons more points

  662. But this is this is going to be a series

  663. On you know a man after god's on heart because we're looking at all these different attributes that david had

  664. You know on wednesday night what we really focused on was just what a balanced character

  665. He was how he really had the whole package of attributes that god wants us to have

  666. But you know today the real emphasis that I want you to see here is that david is a guy

  667. Who's interested in the work of god. He wants to do something big

  668. He wants to get the rewards. He wants to save the nation

  669. He's for the cause at the end of the day

  670. I don't think david would have been offended if david would have showed up and aliyah would have gone down there and killed

  671. Goliath, I think david would have been cheering alive on

  672. Because I think at the end of the day david just really wants is real to win

  673. He just really wants the philistine to get smoked. He wants that philistine's mouth to be shut. He doesn't care who shuts it

  674. He wants god's people to win. He wants the cause of christ to go forward

  675. He wants the gospel preach

  676. He's willing to be offered and sacrificed and I think david would have loved to see sol kill goliath

  677. He would have loved to see eliyah kill goliath, but sadly eliyah didn't love to see david do it

  678. And even sol didn't love to see david do it because then sol gets jealous later and is like

  679. Oh, what do you mean david slew his ten thousands?

  680. Who is david slaying the ten thousands for?

  681. for sol

  682. He's you know what I mean? He's he's he's working under sol's kingdom. He's following sol

  683. sol didn't see it that way

  684. And so david is a team player and this is how we should be as christians

  685. And this is how faithful words should be we should always want to help our other like sister churches and friends churches to succeed

  686. You know so if we can spend money to help them succeed

  687. If we can donate manpower to help them succeed if we can promote their events and their things help them succeed

  688. It's like what's in it for us nothing

  689. Because what's in it for us is we want the cause of christ to go forward

  690. But sadly there are churches that feel like they're in competition with one another

  691. And they don't realize that this could be a win-win

  692. Where we all just pull together and work together for the cause of christ

  693. It's really sad when people don't understand they think it's some zero some game where they have to tear us down

  694. To lift themselves up instead of just saying hey, let's not make it about us at all

  695. Let's make it about the gospel of jesus christ

  696. Now look, obviously the bible says being slandered, you know, we entreat

  697. You know, obviously when we're slandered a lot of times we're going to defend ourselves

  698. And say what we need to say and and and look if people are preaching lies and false doctrine, we're going to call it out

  699. Especially if they're enemies preaching lies and false doctrine, but at the end of the day

  700. We want the cause of christ to succeed. We want the old ifp churches in our area that are big on soul winning

  701. We want them to succeed. We're for them

  702. We're not we're not somehow in competition with say valley baptist out in mesa or we're not in competition with

  703. You know that old path baptist that started up in chandler or other

  704. You know churches in our area that are four so we're not in competition with them

  705. I would love to see our church and their churches grow

  706. I would love to see every

  707. Bible preaching soul winning king james church that actually is pastor by a pastor with integrity

  708. That just like let's all

  709. Succeed for christ. That's all you know, hey, we want you to reign as kings and we want to reign as kings with you

  710. Right, but at the end of the day

  711. Even if we personally suffer

  712. Even if we personally don't make it if the gospel makes it

  713. You know, that's all that matters because you know at the end of the day some of us have to be sacrificed

  714. You know

  715. And I mean think about if if I walked out that door today and I got killed in the parking lot or something

  716. You know at the end of the day

  717. You know everything I did for christ is going to is going to follow

  718. And and it's not going anywhere anything that I did for myself is going to go away and be gone. It's all wood, hay, and stubble

  719. Because i'm going to cease to matter because i'm not even going to be alive anymore

  720. And the cause of christ will march forward

  721. But whatever I did for christ anybody I got saved anybody I taught the bible to

  722. All that stuff

  723. Follow you know the bible says bless her the dead which dying the lord from hence forth

  724. Yay set the spirit that they may rest from their labors and their works to follow them

  725. So at the end of the day only one life so soon as pass only what's done for christ will last

  726. So think about the big picture of the cause of christ

  727. And get involved

  728. Be a mover and a shaker be a david

  729. Fight goliath do something big for god earn the rewards

  730. But at the end of the day do it as a member of the team

  731. Not for ego or for yourself. Let's bards and have a word of prayer father

  732. We thank you so much for this story about david

  733. And the fight with goliath lord god

  734. I pray that you would just help us to learn what we can from the life of david

  735. And to get involved in the greater cause the greater good

  736. The

  737. Help us to think about the church going forward help us to think about other good churches going forward

  738. Help us to think about christianity being blessed lord and to see a bigger picture than just our own

  739. lives and in jesus name we pray amen
