  1. Good morning. So it's a new series this month of

  2. October called The Power of Holiness. I'm going to talk

  3. a little bit this morning about living and walking in holiness.

  4. Isaiah 35 verses 8 to 9 in the Complete Jewish

    Isaiah 35:8–9

  5. Bible says, says a highway will there be, a way

  6. called the way of holiness. The unclean will not pass

  7. over it, but it will be for those whom he guides.

  8. Fools will not stray along it. No lion or beast

  9. or prey will be traveling there. They will not be

  10. found there, but the redeemed will go there. In the

  11. New Testament, Matthew 7 says, Matthew 7, 13 through 14

  12. in the complete Jewish Bible says, go through the narrow gate.

  13. For the gate that leads to destruction is wide and

  14. the road broad. And many travel it. But it is

  15. a narrow gate and the hard road that leads to life.

  16. And only a few find it. So that's just a

  17. precursor to the word. It's a bit wobbly. A bit

  18. of a precursor to the word. In the Old Testament,

  19. as I referenced, there's a highway of holiness. In the

  20. New Testament, Jesus references a narrow road. A hard road

  21. that leads to life and only few find it. So today,

  22. We're going to go through a number of steps, a

  23. number of points, and see what the Holy Spirit does

  24. in terms of giving us some foundational truths about holiness,

  25. what it means to us, what the practicality of what

  26. that means. People say, you know, God says, be holy,

  27. for I am holy. But what does that mean to us, really? So,

  28. cabbage chocolate bars, right? They've got lots of chunks in them,

  29. haven't they? Yeah? Nobody's a captive chocolate bar. Any chocolate

  30. bar has lots of chunks in it. So what I

  31. want to do is just chunk it down today. So

  32. rather than eat the whole bar at once, we're going

  33. to chunk it down to bits because it's easier to eat. Yeah?

  34. Otherwise you're sick. So with the Word of God, we're

  35. going to chunk it down into bits. Okay? And we're

  36. going to build on those bits. So the first part

  37. of that is talking about the incorruptible seed. Okay? I'm

  38. going to read from John 3, 1 through 8. The

  39. New King James Version. There was a man of the

  40. Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. This man

  41. came to Jesus by night and said to him, Rabbi,

  42. we know that you're a teacher come from God. No

  43. one can do the signs that you do unless God

  44. is with him. Jesus said to him, most assuredly I

  45. say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot

  46. see the kingdom of God. Nicodemus said to him, how

  47. can a man be born when he's old? Can he

  48. enter a second time into his mother's womb? Jesus answered,

  49. And you hear the sound of it, but cannot tell

  50. where it comes from and where it goes. So is

  51. everyone who is born of the Spirit. So when we're

  52. born again, it's our spirit that changes, not our flesh.

  53. All right? Our spirits inhabit the world of the spirit.

  54. Our flesh inhabits the world of the flesh. Okay? So

  55. flesh to flesh is firm. Spirit to spirit is firm.

  56. So we are, when we are born again, we are

  57. a spirit person and we live in a body. Right?

  58. If I just popped one off at Shane... his body

  59. would drop, his spirit would still be standing there. Yeah?

  60. Now we're born again of incorruptible seed through the word

  61. of God. That's what 1 Peter 2, 23 says. We're

  62. born of incorruptible seed. Jesus paid the price. Yeah? It's incorruptible,

  63. cannot be corrupted. 2 Corinthians 2, 5 puts it this way. Consequently,

  64. from now on we estimate and regard no one from

  65. purely a human point of view in terms of natural

  66. standards of value. No, even though we did estimate Christ

  67. from a human viewpoint and as a man, yet now

  68. we have such knowledge of him that we no longer

  69. in terms of the flesh. Therefore, if any person is

  70. engrafted in Christ the Messiah, he's a new creation, a

  71. new creature altogether. The old previous moral and spirit condition

  72. has passed away. Behold, The flesh has come new. That's

  73. the amplified version. Paul knew Jesus because Jesus was around

  74. when Paul was around. Paul stood there watching the clothes

  75. of the people who stoned Stephen the first martyr. What

  76. Paul is saying here is he knew Jesus in the

  77. flesh and now he knows Jesus in the spirit. He's

  78. had a revelation. He had his Damascus experience. when he

  79. fell down, and Jesus said, don't kick against the goads,

  80. because they've got pricks on, they hurt. He spent three

  81. days fasting, and then the scales fell off his eyes,

  82. so he's had a revelation of Jesus now. Right? Now

  83. we are born again, it's a spiritual change. Our spirits

  84. were dead, now they are alive. Okay? Okay? So you

  85. cannot lead a Christian life. You cannot live a Christian

  86. life in the flesh. Alright? Because you're not born of

  87. the flesh. You're born of the spirit. Yeah? You can nod.

  88. You don't have to shout and say amen, but you

  89. can nod. Alright? Just so I know you're getting it.

  90. Our spirit was dead and now it is alive. Paul

  91. wrote in 1 Thessalonians 5, 23, that we're a trichotomy.

  92. We are a spirit. We have a soul. We live

  93. in a body. Okay? The key thing to understand here

  94. is many of us try to live the way that

  95. God wants us to live in and through our flesh,

  96. not by the spirit. It is impossible to be a

  97. believer and to walk in the power of God in

  98. the flesh. It does not work. Yeah? John 6, 24,

  99. I think it is. It's not on the slides. It

  100. says God is a spirit. Okay? So our spirit communes

  101. with the spirit. Yeah? There's nothing through our flesh. This

  102. is just fundamental to say what I want to say.

  103. Many people don't recognize that. They read it, but they

  104. don't live it. And that all links to walking in holiness, okay?

  105. So a flesh is the bit that needs to change.

  106. It needs to be transformed day by day. Dave made

  107. a comment earlier about he may say something wrong. You know,

  108. he might not get it right all the time because

  109. he's a work in progress, yeah? We're all works in progress.

  110. So what do we need to do? We need to

  111. crucify the flesh. The spirit is done and dusted. When

  112. you're born again, your spirit is perfect as God has

  113. made it. It's your flesh that needs some work. A

  114. bit of contents. Matthew 26, Matthew 26, 42. Jesus was

  115. praying in the Garden of Gethsemane. I think the second

  116. time he went to pray. He knew he was going

  117. to be beaten. He knew he was going to be scourged. Scourged, sorry.

  118. He knew he was going to be crucified. Scourging as

  119. bits of metal and bits of bone in a long whip.

  120. And they stripped their victim and whipped him. So that

  121. tore the flesh, exposed the internal organs. Right? So you

  122. were dying at that point and blood is dripping everywhere.

  123. It's not a pleasant sight. Not that I've seen it

  124. in the flesh. He knew he was going to be crucified.

  125. He knew what he had to go through because he

  126. came with a purpose. So he's in the garden of

  127. Gethsemane and a second time he went to pray and

  128. he said, my father, if this cup cannot pass from me,

  129. Unless I drink it, your will be done. He came

  130. for a purpose. He knew he came to die. Because

  131. it's through his blood, it's through his resurrection that we

  132. can have a relationship with the Father. That's fundamental to

  133. the Christian faith. The purpose here is he made a decision.

  134. He chose to go through with it. His flesh was screaming, no. No.

  135. His spirit said, yes. Remember Philippians 2, verse 5. Jesus

    Philippians 2:5

  136. was fully man, but he was fully God. I've got

  137. time to share this point because I've only got a

  138. small slot. But he was fully man, but he was

  139. fully God. Romans 6, 22, the amplified version, classic version says, Now,

  140. since you have been set free from sin and become

  141. slaves to God, you have your present reward in holiness.

  142. And it's then eternal life. So when we're born again,

  143. we are set free from sin. Your spirit is free

  144. from sin. You're free from the law of sin and death.

  145. Go and read the book of Romans. I haven't got

  146. time to do this today. Go read the book of Romans.

  147. We're free from the law of sin and death. And

  148. our present reward is holiness. The end is eternal life.

  149. Paul wrote in Galatians 2.20, which is the Memory verse

  150. for next week. I have been crucified with Christ. It's

  151. no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me,

  152. in the Spirit. The life which I now live in

  153. the flesh, I live by faith in the Son of

  154. God who loved me and gave himself for me. We

  155. too have been crucified with Christ. Our old man, if

  156. you like, spiritually speaking, was dead. When we invited Jesus

  157. into our life, it was a miracle and our spirit

  158. became alive. We've now got to make a quality decision

  159. like Jesus made in the Garden of Gethsemane to crucify

  160. our flesh and to renew our mind. I heard someone

  161. say recently, we just saw our stinking thinking. That was

  162. quite interesting. With the word of God. So we've talked

  163. about the incorruptible seed. We've talked about crucifying the flesh.

  164. Next thing I want to talk about is spirit-led renovations. Now,

  165. renovation can mean many things to many people. I have

  166. a friend who likes renovating houses. He's done one, two,

  167. maybe three now. It's always messy. There's always lots of dust,

  168. lots of dirt. He actually enjoys it. And he also

  169. obviously gets a good product at the end of it.

  170. So with that in mind, let's read Romans 12 and

  171. verse 1 through 2, which is the amplified version of

  172. the Bible, classic version, not the new version. Paul speaking,

  173. I appeal to you, therefore, brethren, and beg of you

  174. in view of all the mercies of God, to make

  175. a decisive dedication of your bodies, presenting all your members

  176. and faculties as a living sacrifice, holy sacrifice, devoted, consecrated,

  177. and well-pleasing to God, which is your reasonable, rational, intelligent

  178. service and spiritual worship. In other words, make a quality decision,

  179. say no to the wrong things, and yes to God

  180. and the right things. Okay? So make a quality decision,

  181. say no to the wrong things, and yes to the

  182. right things. It's not a case of do I have

  183. another donut? Is my waistline going to get bigger? It's

  184. should I be doing this? It is honoring to God

  185. what I'm doing. Should I be watching this? Should I

  186. be having this conversation? Should I be hanging with these people?

  187. We can break it down to the real world where

  188. the rubber hits the road for us. The ouch moment.

  189. Verse 2. Do not be conformed to this world, this age,

  190. fashioned after and adapted to its external superficial customs. Don't

  191. follow the crowd. Follow God. Yeah? There's always peer pressure,

  192. whether you're at home, whether you're at work, wherever you are,

  193. there's always peer pressure in your group of friends. Don't

  194. follow the crowd. Follow God. But be transformed, changed by

  195. the entire renewal of your mind. By its new ideals

  196. and its new attitudes. In other words, renovate and renew

  197. your mind. Remember your spirit is perfect. It's the flesh.

  198. It's the flesh. That's the challenge. And it's also we're

  199. going to let our mind rule. We're going to let

  200. our spirit rule. Okay? Remember you've had, let's say you

  201. met Jesus when you're 20 years old. That means you've

  202. had 20 years of stinking thinking. Jesus has got to

  203. basically clean your mind, align your mind with the word

  204. of God, so you have a godly perspective about something,

  205. not a worldly perspective. If you live in the world,

  206. and you don't know Jesus, you're going to die. And

  207. when you die, you're going to go to hell. Yeah?

  208. If you live in the spirit, and you live in

  209. the world, and you die, you go to heaven. Live

  210. for God. Okay? So we've got to choose to renovate

  211. our mind with the Word of God so that you

  212. may prove for yourselves what is the good and acceptable

  213. and perfect will of God, even the things which is

  214. good and acceptable and perfect in His sight. I'll give

  215. you an example. So I remember a few years ago,

  216. I had to knock down some trees, dig out some

  217. tree roots. And we had a lot of ivy in

  218. our garden. It was one of those things where I

  219. had to do some work in the garden. So I

  220. dug about two foot deep. So three, 400 mil deep plus,

  221. or nearly 500 centimeters. People don't know what that is

  222. in English. to dig out this ivy. The ivy latticed

  223. over the garden. I took the top ivy off very quickly,

  224. but the root of the ivy went all over. And

  225. it took me a couple of weekends to just dig

  226. this out. I think I got rid of two wheelie

  227. bins of ivy which were below the ground before I

  228. top soiled it, seeded it, leveled it, and the grass grew.

  229. The reason for using that analogy is sometimes we've got

  230. ivy in our mind, right? You can deal with the

  231. top stuff quite easily. You can just pull it off,

  232. throw it in the bin, and the surface looks great.

  233. When you dig down into it, there's a lot of

  234. roots in there which need to be taken out. There's

  235. a lot of digging that needs to happen to get

  236. rid of it. When it's gone, it's gone, but there's

  237. a lot of work. Okay? So with our minds, Paul's

  238. saying here you need to renew your mind with the

  239. Word of God. The Spirit's done and dusted. It's the

  240. mind that needs sorting out. And like I spent ages

  241. in the garden digging up, we've got to spend ages

  242. in the Word of God, letting God work on our mind,

  243. renewing our mind so that our mind aligns with the

  244. Word of God. So that might be dealing with things

  245. like fear, anxiety, anger, worry, how we treat people, because

  246. we've learned that from the people who brought us up,

  247. or the people we spent time with. I have a friend,

  248. and he went to a Because his boy was in trouble.

  249. I said, where are you going? He said, my boy's

  250. in trouble. He's a bit angry. He gets angry very quickly.

  251. This guy's really placid. He said, Simon, it took me

  252. a long time to deal with my anger. A long time.

  253. I'd be off the handle very quickly. I'd snap very quickly.

  254. So my boy's like me. I said that to say

  255. that sometimes we imbibe something from our our parents are

  256. the people who ring us up. Okay? And because it's

  257. done over a period of time, we don't know it.

  258. Now we can invite some good things, or we can

  259. invite some bad things, depending on who our parents are. So,

  260. sorry parents in the room, not pointing fingers. It is

  261. how it is. I've got friends, I've got family, and

  262. I see where some of the the things come from.

  263. I remember I once met Dave's sister. They don't look

  264. the same, but when they smile, it's like, whoa, that's

  265. the same smile. They have the same smile, which is good.

  266. You know, my wife and her three sisters, or two sisters,

  267. all smile the same as their mother. It's just like, boom.

  268. I can't do it. You don't see the bottom teeth,

  269. but you see the top teeth. And they all do

  270. the same thing. When you get them in the line,

  271. it's like, oh, you don't realize it. I said that

  272. as a bit of humor, but it makes the point.

  273. We imbibe from our people who bring us up, okay?

  274. Good things and bad things, all right? We need to

  275. be transformed into the image of the Son of God

  276. who loved us and gave himself for us. We don't

  277. walk in the flesh, we walk in the Spirit. Okay?

  278. When we are born again. God said to Peter, you

  279. used to dress yourself. Now I'll dress you and I'll

  280. send you where you don't want to go. Alright? So,

  281. you know, if you want to live a holy life,

  282. You need to consider these elements, right? It's not about

  283. turning up to church. It's not about just reading the Bible,

  284. following the scriptures through on a plan. It's about doing

  285. business with God. Okay? So that's spirit-led renovation. Number four,

  286. or the fourth thing is set your mind on the

  287. things of the spirit. So some people are very determined, yeah?

  288. Very determined in how they do things. I remember one

  289. of my sister's kids. He was a very determined young man.

  290. I have a vivid memory now of a two-year-old with

  291. red boots and a blue duffel coat sprinting down the

  292. road Because he thought he was going to go for

  293. a run. To sprint after him to catch him up.

  294. Because his little kids go quick. He decided he was

  295. going to do something. He decided he was going to

  296. do it and he did it. Some of us can

  297. be very decisive in what we're going to do. Once

  298. you've made a decision, we're not going to be moved

  299. from that decision. Others are a bit more chilled and

  300. they're like, well, whatever. Depending on how we made up.

  301. It regards whether you're chilled or whether you're decisive, you

  302. need to set your mind on the things of the spirit,

  303. not the things of the flesh. Okay? I'm not saying

  304. the flesh is bad per se, but we do not

  305. live in the flesh, we live in the spirit when

  306. we live in this world. Okay? You were born again,

  307. you were a changed person, and therefore you You were

  308. changed and you have to live a certain way. Okay?

  309. If you try to live in the flesh, it just

  310. won't work and things will fail. Your life will be

  311. like this. Up and down. Up and down. Because you're

  312. trying to live a spiritual life in the flesh and

  313. it just doesn't work. Okay? Romans 8, 5 through 8

  314. in the New King James Version puts it this way.

  315. For those who live according to the flesh set their

  316. minds on the things of the flesh. But those who

  317. live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit.

  318. For to be carnal-minded is death, but to be spiritual-minded

  319. is life and peace. Because the carnal mind is enmity

  320. against God. For it is subject to the law of God. No,

  321. indeed it can be. So then, those who are in

  322. the flesh cannot please God. So some of us start

  323. this journey and we give up. Because we didn't set

  324. our minds. And the flesh is in control. The flesh

  325. is ruling. It's like, oh, maybe I will, maybe I won't.

  326. You've got to put, what I say, a quality decision

  327. about something. I have a family member who There's been

  328. a number, numerous diets. And they want to lose some weight,

  329. so they lose some weight, do this diet, and they

  330. go back and eat what they used to eat beforehand,

  331. and the weight goes back on. And then they go

  332. another diet, and then they lose some weight, and they

  333. go back to eating what they used to before, and

  334. it goes back on. And it just sort of like

  335. loops and loops and loops. So they win, and then

  336. they go back to their old stinking thinking and go,

  337. I'll have another donut today. Yeah? I'll give you a

  338. some nutritional advice. If you're going to eat lots of donuts,

  339. it isn't going to work for your waistline. It doesn't work.

  340. Especially those Krispy Kreme donuts. That doesn't work. Now, if

  341. we make a quality decision to change our diet and

  342. eat healthy stuff and do a bit of exercise, then

  343. it will work. But you can't do something then go

  344. back to what you were doing before. Do something, go

  345. back to something. That's a cycle which needs to be broken. So,

  346. we need to set our minds on the things of

  347. the Spirit and persevere and push on. Everyone Listen to

  348. my voice, whether it's online or in this room. We've

  349. all got decisions to make about what we do, where

  350. we go, how we live our lives. From a spirit-led perspective,

  351. it's a very personal journey. And it's a hard road

  352. to walk because you've got to crucify your flesh. And

  353. your flesh wants to be in control. All right? So

  354. going back to my analogy, if you were born again

  355. at the age of 20, that's 20 years of the

  356. flesh telling you what to do. And you just go

  357. with it. Then when the spirit's born again, the spirit

  358. wants to be in the driving seat, as it were.

  359. We've got a backseat driver in the flesh saying, no, no,

  360. go here, go there, do this, do that. You know,

  361. it doesn't work. We need to be changed from glory

  362. to glory And it will not be the work of

  363. a man, it will be the work of the Holy

  364. Spirit when we cooperate with the Holy Spirit. And when

  365. we do, we'll become living testimonies because people will see

  366. what God has done. When God does a work, he

  367. does it well. And people notice. And I suppose the

  368. biggest secret to success is to surrender. Going back to

  369. Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane, he said, not my will,

  370. but your will be done. So we've got to say,

  371. here I am. I surrender. We sing that song, don't we?

  372. I surrender all, but do we actually surrender all or

  373. are we just enjoying singing the song? So is it

  374. a heart condition or is it a stinking thinking condition?

  375. Not pointing any fingers at anybody, I'm just putting it

  376. out there. I was on my notes, there we go. So,

  377. just to summarize. Keeping that slide up, please. Thank you. So,

  378. I've been doing a lot of talking, so I thought

  379. I'd try and summarize this. So, it might be helpful. So,

  380. I broke it down to five things. So, I've got

  381. time to talk about this and time has gone a bit. So,

  382. when the Holy Spirit starts talking about changing our behaviors

  383. or attitudes, wherever it is, and he does speak to

  384. us You might say, Simon, I don't need to do that.

  385. Or Shane, I don't need to do that. Yeah? We've

  386. got to make that quality decision to go along with

  387. God's change. And then we've got to decide not to

  388. give up when we start going through that change. It

  389. might be we have a bad temper. Yeah? It might

  390. be we like too many donuts. It might be something

  391. that God wants to change in our lives. So we've

  392. got to align with his plan. And he'll speak to

  393. us through the word of God. And it's like this.

  394. If we don't do it, we go around the mountain again.

  395. And he keeps bringing us back to the starting point

  396. and saying, okay, we need to deal with this. Let's

  397. deal with this. So fundamentally, we need to say yes

  398. to change. Yes, let's get on and do this business.

  399. Even though I don't like the idea. I recognize we

  400. need to change. Number two, we need to surrender our

  401. will in this area, wherever it may be. Or, put

  402. it this way, we need to not fight God. Number three,

  403. we need to daily follow through on our decision. We

  404. need to be consistent. When you're consistent, that's when you're successful.

  405. You consistently pray consistently. And read the word and do

  406. what the Holy Spirit tells you to do. And go

  407. through that discomfort of dealing with the flesh. God will

  408. change you. Number four, we need to learn how to

  409. meditate on the word that God gives us. That word

  410. which speaks to us either from a spoken word or

  411. something that just jumps out of the page at us.

  412. And God is speaking to us. We need to put

  413. that word in our heart and in our mouth. Joshua 1.8 says,

  414. do not let this book of the Lord depart from

  415. your mouth. Meditate on it day and night that you'll

  416. be prosperous and successful to do all that is written

  417. in it. Meditate there is the Hebrew for mutter. In

  418. other words, speak the word over, run it through your mind,

  419. run it through your heart. It's like the latest song,

  420. whether it's a popular song or a worship song. Once

  421. that gets in your heart, Your mind and your heart.

  422. I think Dave calls it an earworm or something like that.

  423. Where it just sticks in there, sticks in there. You've

  424. got to get the word in there so it's continually

  425. flowing through there. So it's continually changing us. This can

  426. take weeks. It can take months. It can take years.

  427. But it's a journey. And the last thing is thank

  428. God for the journey. As you go through the process.

  429. 1 Thessalonians 5.18 says, In everything give thanks, for this

  430. is the will of God in Christ Jesus. When you

  431. give thanks, you activate the spirit realm. And things happen. Remember,

  432. we live in the spirit. We do not live in

  433. the flesh. Why would you give thanks for something that

  434. is difficult and unpleasant? That is just, from a logic

  435. point of view, that's nuts. That's nuts. But in the

  436. spirit of Rome, God kicks in. The angels kick in. Yeah?

  437. So going back to Galatians 2.20. I've been crucified with Christ.

  438. It's no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me.

  439. When we die to self, we're allowing God to change

  440. us gradually, step by step. And then self will disappear.

  441. And we'll be hidden with Christ in God. As a result,

  442. the person of Jesus will become more visible. The more

  443. you die, the less people see of you and the

  444. more people that see of Jesus. I've seen people where

  445. I see the presence of Jesus, which is very heavy

  446. in those people's lives because they pay the price. And

  447. the desires of the flesh diminish and we walk in holiness.

  448. When that happens, it will impact our environment, our family,

  449. our friends and those around us. When we enter a room,

  450. the presence of God will be tangible. The atmosphere will change, okay?

  451. I've seen it. I've experienced that. So wholeness is when

  452. we're hidden in Christ with God. Colossians 3, 3. We

  453. can't do this by ourselves, right? Because it's a spiritual journey.

  454. It's not a flesh journey. So we need the Holy Spirit.

  455. Romans 8.26 says, likewise the Spirit helps us in our weaknesses.

  456. So let's wrap it there. I'll quickly pray. It's the time. Father,

  457. pray for each individual in this room and those listening

  458. to this message now and later that you would open

  459. their hearts to receive this message and give them an

  460. understanding of where they are on their journey and what

  461. needs to happen next so that they can progressively be

  462. changed from glory to glory. Unconscious as people here who

  463. may have not started that journey, and some people who

  464. may need to restart that journey. Please give them the

  465. grace to... take the next step. And like I said before,

  466. each step will be a miracle. So the scripture that

  467. God gave me this morning when I was praying is

  468. 2 Corinthians 6 Verse 2. You'll hear it in translation.

    2 Corinthians 6:2

  469. For God said, at just the right time, I heard you.

  470. On the day of salvation, I helped you. Indeed, the

  471. right time is now. Today is the day of salvation.

  472. So maybe somebody here, where today is the day of

  473. salvation for you, or you listen online, and today is

  474. the day of salvation for you. There's a ministry room

  475. behind me. If you want to pray with somebody about that,

  476. today you can do. If there's an online, drop us

  477. a message and we can pray with you. I think

  478. I'll just wrap it there. Dave. Thanks, Simon. There's a

  479. real battle.
