  1. We're starting a brand new series today called The Grind. And,

  2. you know, school starts back for most people tomorrow. Some

  3. people already started back. Some people started in a couple

  4. of days. But this week, pretty much everybody's going to

  5. be back into school. And if you're a parent or

  6. a grandparent, what that means is you are back in

  7. the routine. The Grind. The Grind. That, you know, maybe

  8. you got to sleep a little bit earlier. I mean,

  9. sleep a little bit earlier. You got to sleep a

  10. little bit later. And now that's over. Because now you

  11. got a brush tangled hair of a screaming kid. Come

  12. on now. Let's be real. Those don't feel like Jesus moments,

  13. do they? Those feel like devil moments most of the time.

  14. But the reality is, is as we enter into those times,

  15. those are the times that challenge our faith the most.

  16. And over the next few weeks, we want to talk

  17. about the grind, how we cope with it, how we

  18. get through it, how we manage it, how we're able

  19. to do all those things. You know, I want to

  20. kind of position it this way. And this is a

  21. little sad when you think about it this way. But,

  22. you know, if you have a newborn, you got 18

  23. summers left. If you got a first grader, you got 12.

  24. If you got a sixth grader, you got six. It's

  25. important that we don't get lost in the busy and

  26. we maximize every moment. Amen? You know what? As a

  27. matter of fact, the power of life is about experiencing

  28. each day, not just surviving it. In Psalm chapter 9,

    Psalms 9 chapter mention

  29. starting in verse 10, it says, The days of our

  30. lives are 70 years, and if by reason of strength

  31. they're 80 years, yet their boast is only labor and sorrow,

  32. for it is soon cut off and we fly away.

  33. Who knows the power of your anger? For as the

  34. fear of you, so is your wrath. So teach us

  35. to number our days that we may gain a heart

  36. of wisdom. Father, we thank you for your word. Lord,

  37. we thank you that it's the only change agent on

  38. the face of the planet and that in our time

  39. together today, that you would plant those seeds deep at

  40. the foundation of our being. Lord, that we would experience

  41. a harvest of life. That we look back a few

  42. weeks from now, a few months from now, a few

  43. years from now, and we realize that you planted something

  44. so profound in our lives. That it has blossomed and

  45. brought transformations in areas we didn't even know we needed transformation.

  46. And Lord, have your way in Jesus' name. Amen. You know,

  47. this passage of Scripture, it says, count your days. Count

  48. your days. And a lot of times when we hear that,

  49. we think because we're counting down towards the end. But

  50. that's not what the Lord's saying. He said, listen, bring

  51. value to each and every day that you have because

  52. the days we have here, the way we exist right now,

  53. there's only a limited number of those. And most of

  54. us get caught up in the toil and the trouble

  55. and the sorrow and the hardship, and we allow a

  56. lot of those days to pass by. Or just the

  57. laziness and the mundane that we just discount and we think,

  58. you know, I'm going to get to something tomorrow. I'm

  59. going to do that tomorrow. I've talked to a lot

  60. of people that get to the end of their life.

  61. They get to the end of their life. And I

  62. haven't really found anybody that says to me, I wish

  63. I had worked more. Nobody has ever said, I wish

  64. I had just taken a second part-time job. Or I

  65. wish I would have stretched my work week to 80 hours.

  66. Or they never say, I wish I had put my

  67. kid to bed at 6 p.m. rather than 8 p.m.

  68. It's always those moments that we look back and we

  69. realize we didn't maximize those moments. If you will, go

  70. with me to Mark chapter 6, starting in verse 45.

    Mark 6 chapter mention

  71. Mark chapter 6, verse 45. It says, immediately he made

    Mark 6:45

  72. his disciples get into the boat and go before him

  73. to the other side to Bethsaida. While he sent the

  74. multitude away. And when he had sent them away, he

  75. departed to the mountain to pray. Now when evening came,

  76. the boat was in the middle of the sea, and

  77. he was alone on the land. Then he saw the

  78. boat was in the middle of the sea, and he

  79. was alone on the land. Then he saw them straining it, rowing,

  80. for the wind was against them. Now about the fourth

  81. watch of the night he came to them, walking on

  82. the sea, and would have passed them by. And when

  83. they saw him walking on the sea, they supposed it

  84. was a ghost and cried out. For they all saw

  85. him and were troubled, but immediately he talked with them.

  86. And he said to them, Be of good cheer, it's I,

  87. do not be afraid. Then he went up into the

  88. boat to them and the wind ceased. And they were

  89. greatly amazed in themselves beyond measure and marveled, for they

  90. had not understood about the loaves. because of their heart

  91. was hardened. You know, this is one version of that

  92. Jesus walking on the water. This is the one that

  93. doesn't include Peter. If you'll notice, a lot of people

  94. would leave Peter out because I don't think they liked

  95. him very much. He was that guy that always would

  96. talk before he thought. Come on now. And then call

  97. it faith if everything worked out and then blame it

  98. on somebody else if it didn't. Y'all got those friends

  99. and if they're sitting next to you, don't look at

  100. them right now, all right? This is the disciples in

  101. the boat that Jesus had sent them away. But I

  102. want to give a little context to what's actually happening

  103. here because it's easy to just think he sent them away.

  104. But when we read earlier in the chapter, this is

  105. what it says if we start in verse 30. It says,

  106. then the apostles gathered to Jesus and told him all things.

  107. both what they had done and what they had taught.

  108. And he said to them, come aside by yourselves to

  109. a deserted place and rest for a while. For there

  110. were many coming and going and they did not even

  111. have time to eat. So they departed to a deserted

  112. place in the boat by themselves. Jesus said, listen, I

  113. want you to go rest. Jesus recognized that they were tired,

  114. that they were in the middle of the grind, that

  115. they were in the middle of life. This is who

  116. they were now. This is who they were. They were

  117. going and teaching and they were laying hands on people

  118. and they were casting out devils and they were doing

  119. all of those. People were getting healed. They were doing

  120. all those things. And Jesus recognized that they were tired.

  121. And he said, listen, just go and just rest a

  122. little bit. Just get in a boat, go to a

  123. deserted place, rest. And it says, because they didn't even

  124. have time to eat. Do you ever feel like your

  125. life is so busy that you just kind of look

  126. up at the clock and it's 3 p.m. and you

  127. just forgot all about lunch? You feel so busy that

  128. it just gets away from you. But the reality is,

  129. more than you just being so busy, you were just

  130. so on autopilot. Right? You were just checking things off.

  131. You were just checking boxes off. You were just rolling along.

  132. Autopilot happening. Hunger hadn't happened yet, so it hadn't got

  133. your attention. And the reason hunger hadn't happened yet is

  134. because we really hadn't done as much as we thought

  135. we were doing. When you work hard, you get hungry.

  136. But those things escape us and we go through the

  137. day and we look and we realize, oh, wow, this...

  138. Time has just flown by because I'm in the middle

  139. of the grind. They didn't have time to eat. So

  140. Jesus said, hey, I'm going to take care of this.

  141. Get in the boat, go over to a deserted place

  142. and rest. They jumped in the boat and the people

  143. saw them and recognized them. Listen, the people saw them

  144. rowing down the shoreline trying to get to a place

  145. where they could rest. And they started running down the bank.

  146. I just want you to, in your mind, I want

  147. you to imagine this. They're in the boat rowing and

  148. there is a multitude of people running down the shore.

  149. And it says they got in front of the boat

  150. and they were waiting on them when they got there.

  151. And they had gone to a deserted place, a remote place.

  152. They get out of the boat and then Jesus does

  153. what Jesus does. He gets out and there's a multitude

  154. gathered and he's always got a sermon ready. He's always

  155. ready to teach. He's always ready to impart. He's always

  156. ready to heal. He's always ready to set free. He's

  157. always ready to meet you right where you are. always

  158. it doesn't matter how discouraged you are it doesn't matter

  159. how hungry you are how tired you are how happy

  160. you are he's ready to meet you right at your

  161. point of need And Jesus gets out and Jesus starts

  162. doing the Jesus thing because he doesn't get tired. Jesus

  163. is a machine. Not because he's the son of God,

  164. but because he is consumed by the call. You know,

  165. a lot of times when I think about the church...

  166. And I think about you. That thought runs into my mind.

  167. If I could only get them to. And then I realized,

  168. y'all don't go to bed every night thinking about this place.

  169. Don't act like you do. I know you don't. I

  170. know you don't. The whole pastor, yeah. I will not

  171. deny you, Lord. That's Peter again. You're being like Peter

  172. right now. You don't go to bed thinking about those things.

  173. You don't go to bed about whether they're going to

  174. send the right size screws to do the construction. You

  175. don't think about those things. Last night, I literally laid

  176. in the bed and I thought, what if they send

  177. the wrong size screws? It's not even my responsibility to

  178. make sure the screws are the right size. That was

  179. a thought on my mind. And now, thanks to Laura,

  180. all I can think about is whether they're going to

  181. have plastic or not. I will be vexed by plastic

  182. for a week. Probably just going to go buy it

  183. tomorrow just to make sure. And Jesus is doing that

  184. and disciples, they're struggling because they're already tired and they're

  185. already hungry. They're in the grind. They're in the grind.

  186. You know, there are people around you that do the

  187. same thing you do and they don't get worn out

  188. by the same things you get worn out by. Because

  189. they're wired different. There's a different passion. There's a different connection.

  190. And you're not wrong in that. You're gifted differently. It's

  191. just like Pastor Clay and I, we talk about this

  192. all the time. You guys love me so much because

  193. I'm lovable. Not so much over there, right? I mean,

  194. not so much. I mean, and we talk about those

  195. things like, oh, gee, if you just ask people, they

  196. just bat their eyes. They just do whatever you want

  197. them to do. I'm like, yeah. Why don't they for you?

  198. Because you're mean. No, I'm just kidding. But didn't he

  199. do a good job over the last four weeks, by

  200. the way? Preach the house down every week. And they're

  201. there and they get, in my mind, they get together

  202. and they say, listen, we're about to starve to death.

  203. Jesus is preaching. These people are shouting. He's going to

  204. go for hours. And we're starving. Somebody needs to go

  205. tell him. Somebody, and they all look at Peter. Somebody

  206. needs to go tell him that these people need to

  207. be sent away because the people are hungry. Now the

  208. reality is, the people were there because they were hungry. So,

  209. you know, Peter was like, Lord, powerful message. Powerful. I mean,

  210. when you laid the hands on and the arm grew back,

  211. five fingers, it was amazing. But, we're in a deserted

  212. place like you told us to go to. And these people,

  213. they're hungry. So send them away so they can go

  214. get something to eat. What he really meant was we're

  215. worn out and tired and starving because we've been in

  216. the middle of the grind. We've been in the middle

  217. of just making life happen, of getting things done. And

  218. we're hungry and we're tired. So send the people away

  219. so that we can get what we need. And Jesus

  220. looks at them and he says, hey, I got a

  221. better idea. You feed them. And he said, we don't

  222. have enough money to feed these people, Jesus, because you

  223. don't pay us enough. How are we going to do that?

  224. And he said, well, I don't know, but it's your

  225. responsibility to feed them. So they get together and they

  226. find five loaves. They find two fishes and Jesus blesses it.

  227. He said, tell them to sit down in groups of 50.

  228. They went out among, they started passing it out, started

  229. breaking off pieces of bread, started breaking off fish, giving

  230. it to them. Everybody got all they wanted to eat.

  231. And then they went back and they picked up the

  232. leftovers and there were 12 baskets left. 12 baskets left

  233. after they pass. Listen, it's the largest numerical miracle in

  234. the New Testament. The largest numerical miracle in the New Testament.

  235. And after the people are fed and Jesus gets through preaching,

  236. he looks at the apostles and he says, okay, get

  237. in the boat and go to Bethsaida. Get in the boat.

  238. Get in the boat. Now go over to Bethsaida. You

  239. have earned your rest. Well done, my good and faithful servant.

  240. Get in the boat and go. And it says that

  241. they didn't understand the loaves because their heart was hard.

  242. They looked past the miraculous because the grind was more familiar.

  243. When they looked back on the greatest multitudinal numerical miracle

  244. in the New Testament, they remembered how tired they were

  245. rather than the multiplied loaves and fish. They missed the

  246. miracle because life was on autopilot and things were happening

  247. and they were tired. So they did not see Jesus

  248. in the middle of the moment. Do you know that

  249. so many times we miss Jesus in the middle of

  250. the moment? That that moment when your kid walks up

  251. and listen, I've done it a hundred times. I'm not

  252. preaching at you. I'm sharing with you. And they walk

  253. up and they say, hey, can we play a game tonight?

  254. And you think, oh, I'm just wore out. And the

  255. game is the loaf. That game is the miracle in

  256. the middle of the moment. But we're on autopilot and

  257. we've convinced ourselves that we're tired. So we miss the loaf.

  258. So they're out there, man, and they're rowing. They've been

  259. in the middle of the grind. They're rowing, they're rowing,

  260. they're rowing. A storm kicks up. You know, Jesus didn't

  261. go with them. Jesus stayed and prayed on the mountain.

  262. Now watch. If Jesus was able to be alone on

  263. the mountain, they also could have gone on the mountain

  264. and been alone. But Jesus sent them to do another

  265. task that to go to another place because he needed

  266. to send a message wrapped up in the place that

  267. he sent them because most of these men were fishermen.

  268. Most all of these men were fishermen and they made

  269. their living from the sea. And he told them to

  270. go to Bethsaida, which literally translated is the house of fishermen.

  271. He said, okay, this is what I want. You've served well. Now,

  272. you're a fisherman, so I want you to go over

  273. to the house of fishermen and wait for me because

  274. you need to decide if your old life is better

  275. than the potential and the possibility of the new life.

  276. Is the grind you used to operate in better than

  277. the grind with Jesus in it? Because if the grind

  278. with Jesus in it is better, then you will be

  279. aware of the moments where the loaves present themselves and

  280. you can celebrate those moments because it's not... Do you

  281. know the people in the back of that crowd, they

  282. didn't even know it was a miracle? No. The only

  283. people that knew it was a miracle were the ones

  284. passing out the bread and the fish. They just kept

  285. reaching in and taking it out. Nobody knew what went

  286. in in the first place. They didn't know that all

  287. that was in that bucket when they started was the

  288. left gill and pectoral fin. They just kept pulling out fillet, fillet, fillet,

  289. fish fillet for you, fish fillet for you. More fish fillet,

  290. fish fillet, fish fillet. Your kids may not even realize

  291. the miracle is happening in the moment when you're spending

  292. that time together. Your spouse may not even realize that

  293. you booking that hotel for one night just to get

  294. away from the grind for a moment, that it's a miracle.

  295. But for you, because you're in the middle of it

  296. and you can see it and you can experience God

  297. in it, you can see the loaf. So Jesus comes

  298. walking to him and this is... particularly important to the story,

  299. it says that Jesus' intention was to pass by them.

  300. When Jesus left, he was going to walk by the boat.

  301. He was going to let them see him, but he

  302. wasn't stopping. He was just on his way because he

  303. wanted to give them a revelation of who he was.

  304. But then something happened because they were so busy rowing

  305. that their vision wasn't clear and they didn't recognize that

  306. it was Jesus and he didn't want them to be confused.

  307. And he said, no, no, no, no, no. Don't be afraid.

  308. It's me. And in this translation, it says, be of

  309. good cheer. It's also translated, be of good courage. Same words.

  310. Don't be vexed and perplexed. Be free and expect it

  311. for the encounter that's going to happen. And Jesus walks

  312. over and he climbs up in the boat. And now

  313. watch this. They had just seen the greatest numerical miracle

  314. done in the New Testament. And Jesus gets in the

  315. boat and they arrive to the shore and they marvel. Marvel.

  316. The fact that they got to the other side was

  317. more powerful than the multiplied fish and loaves. And if

  318. they had just kept rowing, they would have made it

  319. to the other side because Jesus made it easier. Stop

  320. asking Jesus to just make your life easier. Stop. And

  321. get involved in the middle of what seems like chaos

  322. and the busyness and the work that you have your

  323. hands on because He's surrounding you with people that need

  324. to experience the loaf. That need to come in contact

  325. with that miracle, whether they realize... sitting down in the

  326. break room next to that person that just looks busted, broke,

  327. and disgusted. They may not see it's a miracle, but

  328. you know God sent you there and you can't wait

  329. for what happens next. This isn't when Jesus got in

  330. the boat. This used to perplex me about this story

  331. because Jesus said, go to Bethsaida. Jesus gets in the

  332. boat and when they get to the other... Let me

  333. read this to you. Mark 6, 45. Immediately he made

  334. his disciples get into the boat and go before him

  335. to the other side to Bethsaida. Verse 53. When they

  336. had crossed over, they came to the land of Gennesaret

  337. and anchored there. So Jesus told them to go to

  338. the house of fishermen. that represented the life that they

  339. had known before he showed up. He gets in the boat,

  340. and somehow they end up in a different place. Was

  341. Jesus wrong in the beginning of where there should be?

  342. Because what happens when they get out of the boat,

  343. Jesus preaches more. He heals more people. More people get

  344. set free. The things that Jesus does. That word... Genesaret,

  345. the meaning of that, the cultural meaning of that is

  346. the garden of abundance. The garden of abundance. So they

  347. were going and their destination was their old life. was

  348. more of what they had wrestled through, more of what

  349. they had struggled with. They were on their way to

  350. the house of fishermen as fishermen, and Jesus gets in

  351. the boat because they refused to allow him to pass by.

  352. They got involved with him in the moment, in the

  353. middle of the grind, and Jesus delivers them to the

  354. garden of abundance where things grew that should not even

  355. grow there. Ooh! Do you realize that every product in

  356. the entire Middle East region grows in Gennesaret? Things that

  357. should not grow there, grow there. Things that only grow

  358. at altitude grow there. Things that only grow in cooler

  359. climate grow there. Because with God, all things are possible.

  360. And the abundance of what you need is there if

  361. you will just realize that the loaves, the loaf is

  362. more important than the load. Recognizing the miracle in the

  363. moment is more important than the work and the effort

  364. that we expend every day because we think the effort

  365. is the point. The point is to count your days.

  366. To make every day count. not to check it off

  367. towards retirement, not so that, you know, my kids are

  368. finally going to get out. Come on now. Listen, I

  369. don't know your kids personally. I know some of y'all's kids.

  370. I don't know all y'all's kids personally, but a lot

  371. of you, you're just on like a countdown to 18.

  372. It's like, oh, three more years, they're going to be 18.

  373. I'll be free. I'll be free. I'll be free. I'm

  374. going to walk around in my underwear. I'm never going

  375. to put on a shirt. I'm just going to dance

  376. in the living room with my wife. And she's like,

  377. when my babies leave, you ain't coming close to me.

  378. Only reason I hold your hand is because I want

  379. them to hold their husband's hand. And we get this

  380. image in our mind that There's something else. And when

  381. we get there, that's when God's going to show up.

  382. And that's when we're going to love life. And that's

  383. when we're going to start enjoying life. And we forget

  384. about the loaves that happen every single day. That God

  385. is doing miracles in you and through you every single day.

  386. But we got our minds so focused on the grind

  387. that we missed the miracle. So right now, I want

  388. you to take a breath. Just for a moment. And

  389. maybe you came in here today, you're exhausted. You're exhausted

  390. from work. You're exhausted from waiting. You're exhausted from trying.

  391. You're exhausted from lack. You're exhausted from whatever it is.

  392. You're exhausted. You're exhausted. Jesus says, look for the moment.

  393. I believe there's probably somebody here today that if you

  394. were honest, if you were really honest with yourself, you

  395. would say, I don't have a relationship with God. Maybe

  396. you did and now you don't. Maybe you never have.

  397. I don't know what classification you fall in, but if

  398. you don't have a relationship with the Lord, He can't

  399. get in your boat. He can't use you to multiply

  400. the bread and the fish. He can't put loaf moments

  401. in your life because you can't recognize them because you

  402. don't know the sender. But right now in this moment,

  403. if you find yourself far from Him, I want to

  404. invite you into a close... passionate, loving relationship with the

  405. Lord who gave His life for you. He just laid

  406. it down. Beaten and bruised and killed For you. So

  407. you could recognize the miracles in the passing moments. Every

  408. head bowed and every eye closed. If you're here today

  409. and you say, Pastor, I'm not where I should be

  410. with the Lord. My heart is not closed. far from Him.

  411. But I want to know Him. I want to experience Him.

  412. I want Him in my boat. I don't want the

  413. old destination. I want the new destination. If that's you,

  414. just slip your hand up and say, that's me, Pastor.

  415. Pray for me. I want to invite Jesus into my

  416. heart and into my life in a fresh and thriving

  417. way Amen. Amen. I'm going to wait. The Lord's still

  418. dealing with somebody. Just put your hand up and put

  419. it right back down and say, pray for me, Pastor. Amen. Amen. Amen. Amen.

  420. I'm going to wait another 20 seconds. Somebody else, you

  421. just feel broken. You just feel broken inside. You just

  422. feel empty. Poured out. Put your hand up. Put it

  423. right back down. Amen. Every eye open. Everybody stand to

  424. your feet all over the building. Dennis, I need small

  425. term workers. Amen. If you raised your hand, I'm going

  426. to count to three. And when I get to three,

  427. I don't want you to look around to see if

  428. other people are moving. This is between you and God.

  429. This is about your refreshed relationship with Him. It's not

  430. about popularity. It's about transformation. It's about giving up the

  431. load in order to recognize the load. So on the

  432. count of three, if you raised your hand, or now

  433. you've decided you should have, but you didn't, you're invited also.

  434. On the count of three, I want you to step

  435. out and move. The band's going to play this song.

  436. Stay with me for just, I got a couple more

  437. things I need to tell you at the end, so

  438. just stay with me. Unless you got an airplane to catch,

  439. just hang out with me. One. Two. Three, step out

  440. and move right now. Come on, where are you?
