-
Man, the title of my sermon this evening is
-
A Man After God's Own Heart.
-
A man after God's own heart.
-
Of course, this is a reference to David.
-
And it's interesting, if you think about all
-
of the different human characters
-
that are mentioned in the Bible,
-
David is actually mentioned more by name
-
than any other character in the Bible.
-
In fact, David is mentioned about 1139 times in the Bible.
-
Jesus is mentioned 984 times.
-
Of course, that's pretty much all in the New Testament.
-
And then Moses, 848 times.
-
Saul, 425 times.
-
Jacob, 377 times.
-
Aaron, 352 times.
-
I mean, Abraham is mentioned 250 times.
-
But David is mentioned 1139 times in the Bible.
-
He's the most mentioned human character.
-
So he's a pretty important character
-
in the Bible.
-
And he kind of just becomes the standard
-
for all future kings of Israel or Judah.
-
And so he's super important.
-
Someone told me, oh, I don't really like the character David.
-
Like, they were just offended by some of the sins
-
and mistakes that he made.
-
Like, I don't like David.
-
It's kind of hard not to like David
-
if you're gonna like the Bible.
-
Because I mean, we're talking about somebody
-
who's mentioned 1100 sometimes.
-
And obviously he authored a lot of the Psalms
-
and he's a super significant character.
-
But the Bible says of David
-
that he was a man after God's own heart.
-
And so this is someone that we could look at
-
and see what these attributes were
-
that made David a man after God's own heart
-
so that we could also be people after God's own heart.
-
It's not that David is just special
-
and that God just has a soft spot for David
-
for no reason.
-
No, because afterward people are compared to David.
-
It's like he did right in the side of the Lord
-
like David his father.
-
Or he did evil in the side of the Lord.
-
He was not like David his father
-
showing that we can either be like David
-
or not be like David even in 2026.
-
And if we want God to like us,
-
if we want God to be pleased with us,
-
if we want God to bless us,
-
obviously we wanna be like David
-
in the sense that wanna be a man after God's own heart.
-
So what was it that made David a great person?
-
Well, let's look at what the Bible says here
-
when we're first introduced to David.
-
Now flip back a few pages to chapter 13 verse 14
-
because the first time David is actually mentioned by name
-
is in the book of Ruth.
-
But in the book of Ruth, it's just part of a genealogy
-
basically just explaining to you
-
that Boaz begat Obed and Obed begat Jesse
-
and Jesse begat David.
-
And so that's the first time we get that name.
-
But as far as in the narrative here
-
in first Samuel chapter 13,
1 Samuel 13 chapter mention
-
this is the first place that he's actually mentioned
-
as a character, as a person.
-
And it says in verse 14 there,
-
but now thy kingdom shall not continue.
-
This is God speaking to King Saul.
-
He says, your kingdom shall not continue.
-
The Lord had sought him a man after his own heart
-
and the Lord had commanded him to be captain
-
over his people because thou hast not kept
-
that which the Lord commanded thee.
-
And this is where we first get the idea
-
that David is a man after God's own heart.
-
Go to chapter 15 verse 28.
-
Just a couple of pages to the right.
-
Chapter 15 verse 28, Samuel said unto him,
-
the Lord hath rent the kingdom of Israel from thee this day
-
and hath given it to a neighbor of thine
-
that is better than thou.
-
So again, we see David is a man after God's own heart
-
and he is better than King Saul.
-
Well, let's see what attributes made him better.
-
Go if you would to first Samuel chapter 16
1 Samuel 16 chapter mention
-
where we started.
-
And just to bring you up to speed in the story,
-
of course, as God said,
-
he's going to replace King Saul with a man
-
after his own heart.
-
That's gonna be King David.
-
Well, the Lord appears unto Samuel in a vision
-
and tells him, one of Jesse's sons
-
is gonna be the next king of Israel.
-
You're gonna go anoint one of his sons.
-
And so Samuel goes there
-
and all of the sons of Jesse are paraded
-
in front of Samuel.
-
And each time the Lord is telling him,
-
this is not the right person.
-
So it's like the first born, second born,
-
seven sons paraded before him.
-
And Samuel's like, none of these is who I'm looking for.
-
God has not chosen any of these.
-
Is there another son?
-
Do you have another son that you're not showing me?
-
And they're like, well, you know, we do have the youngest
-
but he's out watching the sheep and whatever.
-
So David is kind of an afterthought
-
even in the mind of his father.
-
They thought that these really tall strapping young
-
men that had more physical prowess
-
were gonna be the choice.
-
Whereas it's David.
-
So look at verse number 11 of chapter 16.
-
It says, and Samuel said unto Jesse,
-
are here all thy children.
-
And he said, there remaineth yet the youngest
-
and be able to keepeth the sheep.
-
And Samuel said unto Jesse, send and fetch him
-
for we will not sit down till he come hither.
-
Verse 12.
-
And he said and brought him in.
-
Now he was ruddy and with all the beautiful countenance
-
and goodly to look to.
-
And the Lord said, arise, anoint him for this is he.
-
So point number one, the first thing I wanna show you
-
because remember he's out keeping the sheep in verse 11.
-
Point number one about David is that he did a humble job.
-
This is a guy who did a humble job.
-
I mean, this is one of the greatest men of all time.
-
1100 some mentions in the Bible,
-
man after God's own heart.
-
And he's a man who did a humble job
-
of being a shepherd of caring for the sheep.
-
And you know what?
-
You as men should never be ashamed to do a humble job.
-
Any kind of honest work
-
where you're out working for a living,
-
whether it's blue collar or whatever it is.
-
Hey, never be ashamed to go out and do an honest job.
-
You know, there's no shame in being a garbage man
-
or an electrician or a plumber or cooking food
-
or whatever it is that you do.
-
You should not be too proud to do a humble job.
-
And you know, clean in bathrooms or whatever.
-
Hey, that's the Lord's work.
-
If you're doing it as unto the Lord, not unto men.
-
And so David did a humble job.
-
Being a shepherd is not a glamorous job.
-
He's forgotten about, it's an afterthought.
-
It's not a super highly skilled job,
-
but yet he did that humble job and he did it well.
-
The Bible says in Ecclesiastes 9 verse 10,
-
whatsoever thy hand findeth to do,
-
do it with thy might, right?
-
Give it everything you got.
-
Colossians 3.23 says,
-
and whatsoever you do, do it heartily
-
as to the Lord and not unto men.
-
And I guarantee you that if he would have been
-
slacking off in his shepherding job,
-
there's no way God is gonna bring him
-
to shepherd the people of Israel.
-
If you can't shepherd the sheep,
-
you can't shepherd the people of Israel, right?
-
Because that's the test.
-
If you're faithful in the least,
-
then you'll be faithful in much.
-
And so when you're doing that humble job,
-
God needs to look down at you
-
and see you giving it everything you got,
-
being faithful, taking it seriously,
-
and then God's gonna move you on
-
to bigger and better things.
-
Now you might think, yeah, but nobody sees me.
-
Nobody sees what I'm doing.
-
God sees.
-
Because nobody saw David either.
-
He's not voted most likely to succeed in his yearbook.
-
Because they're saying, hey,
-
one of your sons is gonna be king.
-
He's not even on the list.
-
It's like, are you sure you don't have another son?
-
Well, yeah, okay.
-
Because he's so out of sight, off with the sheep.
-
But at the end of the day, God is the one who sees.
-
No matter what humble job you're doing,
-
God sees if you're doing well or not,
-
and God can give you bigger and better things.
-
So number one, he's a man after God's own heart
-
because he did a humble job
-
and he did it faithfully and he did it well.
-
Number two, what do we see about David?
-
The next thing we learn about him
-
is that he's good looking, right?
-
Because it says right after this that he was ruddy,
-
which ruddy, this is related to our word for red,
-
meaning that I guess he has like blushy cheeks
-
or something probably is what that means.
-
He was with all of a beautiful countenance.
-
So he has a very handsome face and goodly to look to.
-
So he's handsome and good looking.
-
And you say, well, what in the world
-
does this have to do with being a man
-
after God's own heart?
-
Because, you know, let's face it,
-
we can't control the way that we look.
-
We can't control the face that God gave us.
-
But if you would turn to 1 Corinthians chapter one,
-
I think the significant thing here
-
about David being such a good looking young man
-
and being a man after God's own heart
-
is that even though he was very handsome,
-
he did not let that go to his head.
-
He did not become puffed up because let's face it,
-
most people who are very good looking,
-
this could cause them to become prideful, arrogant,
-
and maybe instead of serving God
-
and spending time working hard and doing the right things,
-
they could be out womanizing
-
and doing all kinds of sinful things
-
and just taking a different path in life
-
because they've been blessed
-
with that beautiful countenance.
-
Good looking guy doesn't necessarily mean
-
that he's gonna live for God.
-
And so in spite of being good looking,
-
he didn't let that get him puffed up.
-
He still was a humble servant of God.
-
Because look what the Bible says
-
in 1 Corinthians chapter one, verse 26,
-
it says, for you see your calling, brethren,
-
how that not many wise men after the flesh,
-
not many mighty, not many noble are called,
-
but God has chosen the foolish things of the world
-
to confound the wise
-
and God has chosen the weak things of the world
-
to confound the things which are mighty
-
and the base things of the world
-
and the things which are despised had God chosen.
-
Yay, and the things which are not
-
to bring to not the things that are
-
that no flesh should glory in his presence.
-
He said, look around,
-
look at the movers and shakers in the church,
-
look at the great men of God,
-
look at the preachers that are being greatly used by God.
-
And here's what you're gonna notice
-
is that it's not many wise men according to the flesh,
-
not many people where the world would say,
-
this guy's a big time intellectual.
-
There's not many wise,
-
no, are there gonna be some intellectuals?
-
Absolutely, but not many, okay?
-
Not many mighty men after the flesh,
-
not many that are noble.
-
Look, God has chosen the foolish things of this world
-
to confound the wise.
-
So basically what the Bible is saying,
-
if you look around at the people
-
that are being the most greatly used by God,
-
they're not necessarily, they're really smart people,
-
they're really rich people,
-
they're really good-looking people,
-
they're really high-bred, well-born people.
-
You know, God has chosen just the base people,
-
normal people, average people.
-
And look, you don't have to be super smart
-
to be greatly used by God as a preacher, right?
-
Because if you're filled with the spirit of God
-
and you're preaching the basics of God's word,
-
that's what most people need to hear anyway.
-
You don't have to go super deep.
-
You don't have to be super intellectual.
-
You don't have to know Greek and Hebrew and Aramaic.
-
You don't have to know all of this high-level stuff
-
in order to be greatly used by God.
-
You need to know the Bible and preach the word of God
-
and be spirit-filled.
-
Now, are there gonna be some people that are intellectual?
-
Absolutely, so we're not saying God can't use
-
the intellectual.
-
We're not saying that no preachers are good-looking, okay?
-
We're not saying that no preachers are very athletic.
-
But in general, the most athletic people,
-
the best-looking people, the smartest people,
-
you know what they're gonna do, something else.
-
Why?
-
Because of just ego and pride
-
and just wanting to serve themselves.
-
And some of the more humble people,
-
maybe they even struggled in school.
-
They're not that good-looking, not that athletic,
-
not that social.
-
God could actually do a great work through those people
-
and then he gets all the glory
-
and no flesh glories in his presence.
-
Because think about it.
-
If God greatly used a man of God
-
who was super talented and super smart,
-
then people would just say,
-
well, he's succeeding because he's so smart and talented.
-
Whereas if he takes an ordinary guy
-
and does something extraordinary,
-
then people would look at that and say,
-
it's the spirit of God that did that.
-
And so the fact that David is good-looking,
-
yet he didn't let it go to his head,
-
he's one of the few that excels in some area
-
and yet still can be greatly used by God.
-
You don't have to turn there,
-
you can if you want, but in Ezekiel chapter 28,
Ezekiel 28 chapter mention
-
you know, we have the prophecy
-
that talks about Satan.
-
And it talks about him being actually puffed up
-
and arrogant and prideful because of his beauty.
-
It says in verse 17,
-
"'Thine heart was lifted up because of thy beauty,
-
thou hast corrupted thy wisdom by reason of thy brightness.
-
I will cast thee to the ground,
-
I will lay thee before kings, that they may behold thee.'
-
So we see that Satan was very good-looking
-
and also very wise
-
and because of that,
-
his heart's lifted up and he's prideful.
-
So if we were really good-looking and smart,
-
we could also get prideful
-
and then not be used by God
-
and yet David overcame that.
-
Now go back if you would to 1 Samuel 16.
-
Also in Ezekiel, it mentions Satan's musical prowess
-
and it talks about his pipes
-
and his tabrets and so forth.
-
And what we're gonna see about David
-
is that he also was very musically talented.
-
And again, if you're good-looking
-
and musically talented,
-
that's a recipe for being a womanizer.
-
But that's not the route that David went.
-
Instead, he dedicates his life primarily to serving God.
-
Look at verse number 13.
-
It says,
-
"'Then Samuel took the horn of oil
-
and anointed him in the midst of his brethren
-
and the Spirit of the Lord came upon David
-
from that day forward.
-
So Samuel rose up and went to Ramah."
-
Okay, so the third thing I want you to see about David
-
is that he was filled with the Holy Spirit of God.
-
Now you say, well, that happened after he was chosen.
-
He was filled with the Spirit of God.
-
But he was a vessel that could be filled
-
with the Holy Spirit and was filled with the Spirit.
-
Because remember, it was Saul's sin and disobedience
-
that caused him to lose the privilege
-
of being filled with the Spirit.
-
And the Holy Spirit departed from him
-
and then the Spirit of the Lord rested upon David.
-
He was no longer a suitable vessel
-
to be filled with God's Spirit.
-
Now in the New Testament,
-
we all as saved Christians are permanently
-
indwelled by the Holy Spirit.
-
He will never leave us nor forsake us.
-
We're sealed by the Holy Ghost
-
under the day of redemption.
-
But we still can either be filled with the Spirit
-
or not filled with the Holy Spirit.
-
And so we want to be Spirit filled.
-
And here's the thing,
-
living a life of sin and disobedience to God
-
will preclude you from being filled with the Holy Spirit.
-
And you will actually not be filled with the Holy Spirit
-
because of your carnality and your sin
-
and you're not living forgotten.
-
And what did Jesus say?
-
He said, without me, you can do nothing.
-
You gotta abide in the vine
-
if you want to bring forth much fruit.
-
So if we want to be productive Christians,
-
fruitful Christians, soul-winning Christians,
-
want to be filled with the Holy Spirit,
-
well here's the thing,
-
if you start just living a life of sin and disobedience,
-
well then you could lose that fullness
-
of the Holy Spirit.
-
Productivity is gonna go down
-
or be non-existent.
-
And so the Bible talks about in the New Testament
-
the importance of being filled with the Spirit.
-
Acts 4.31 says when they had prayed,
-
the place was shaken where they were assembled together
-
and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost
-
and they spake the word of God with boldness.
-
So we should pray for boldness, pray for power,
-
pray for the fullness of the Holy Spirit
-
so that we can preach God's word with boldness.
-
Ephesians 5.18, be not drunk with wine,
-
we're in his excess, but be filled with the Spirit.
-
You know, that tells me that if you're drinking
-
a bunch of alcohol, taking drugs,
-
you know, you're not filled with the Spirit.
-
That's the kind of stuff that's gonna prevent you
-
from being filled with the Spirit.
-
Be not drunk with wine, rather be filled with the Spirit,
-
speaking to yourselves in Psalms and hymns
-
and spiritual songs, singing and making melody
-
in your heart to the Lord.
-
And so being filled with the Spirit
-
is what made David a great man
-
and it's what's gonna make you a great man
-
or you a great woman is being filled with the Spirit.
-
Now, not only that, but number four,
-
the next thing we learn about David
-
is that he is an accomplished musician.
-
And again, we just read the verse that said,
-
be filled with the Spirit, speaking to yourselves
-
in Psalms and hymns and spiritual songs.
-
The Bible says in Colossians 3.16,
-
let the word of Christ dwell in you richly
-
in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another
-
in Psalms and hymns and spiritual songs,
-
singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.
-
So we said number one, he did a humble job
-
and he was faithful at that humble job.
-
Number two, he was good looking,
-
but he didn't let it go to his head.
-
Number three, he was filled with the Spirit of God.
-
What are we talking about tonight?
-
We're talking about why was David a man
-
after God's own heart?
-
Why was he such a great man?
-
And the fourth reason that he was a great man
-
is that he was an accomplished musician.
-
Look at 1 Samuel 16, 18.
-
Then answered one of the servants and said,
-
behold, I've seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite
-
that is cunning in playing and a mighty, valiant man
-
and a man of war and prudent in matters
-
and a comely person.
-
Again, comely person is again pointing out
-
the fact that he's a good looking guy
-
and the Lord is with him.
-
Wherefore Saul sent messengers unto Jesse
-
and said, send me David thy son,
-
which is with the sheep.
-
So we see that he is cunning
-
at playing the harp.
-
He is a skilled musician.
-
And I believe that God likes this.
-
I believe that God looks down at that
-
and he respects that and thinks it's a beautiful thing
-
because you see the longest book in the Bible
-
is literally a song book, the book of Psalms.
-
So apparently God loves music.
-
And one of the verses in Psalms, Psalm 332 says this,
-
praise the Lord with the harp.
-
Sing unto him with the sultry
-
and an instrument of 10 strings.
-
Sing unto him a new song.
-
Watch this.
-
Play skillfully with the loud noise.
-
So the Bible is saying praise the Lord
-
using musical instruments.
-
Play skillfully with the loud noise.
-
So apparently this is something that God cares about.
-
And not only is music a beautiful way to praise God
-
and worship God and we're filled with the spirit
-
when we're speaking to ourselves
-
in Psalms and hymns and spiritual songs.
-
But not only that, getting good at playing an instrument
-
just takes a ton of hard work.
-
Now people who are not musicians,
-
they don't understand this.
-
They can't grasp it.
-
If you don't play an instrument,
-
you can't grasp what I'm saying right now
-
because people just think like, oh yeah, no big deal.
-
Or they think like, oh, you're so talented.
-
Oh, it's so much talent.
-
Okay, it's not talent,
-
it's called thousands of hours of practicing.
-
Okay, now talent is gonna make you a little better
-
or lack of talent is gonna make you a little bit worse.
-
But at the end of the day,
-
it's 90% hard work, 10% talent, you know?
-
And the reason, oh, what about Mozart?
-
You know Mozart's dad had him just playing nonstop
-
when he's like a toddler and stuff.
-
You know, he's just, he's in that home.
-
He's brought up that way and he's pushed
-
and pushed and pushed.
-
He's putting in thousands of hours of practice
-
as a little kid, you know?
-
And these guys that you see up here,
-
you know, Moses on the sax, Kira on the piano,
-
you know, all the, I don't wanna leave people out,
-
but I'm just saying like,
-
these people that are up here playing musical instruments,
-
they put thousands of hours of work into that.
-
Guaranteed, they're not just savants
-
or, you know, autistic or something, you know?
-
They actually just practiced a lot to get to that point,
-
okay?
-
And again, you know, what does that show you?
-
That shows you some level of character
-
of how about just sticking with something?
-
Because I'm not gonna ask for a raise of hands.
-
How many of you started an instrument
-
and never went through with it?
-
You know, I mean, it'd be hands all over the building
-
if we're honest, right?
-
It takes character, it takes follow through,
-
it takes hard work to actually get good at it
-
and then to take that talent and use it for the Lord.
-
Because again, worldly musicians,
-
they can get super talented and just go out
-
and just use it to make money
-
or even to sing songs that have a bad message,
-
glorifying sin, glorifying drinking,
-
glorifying drugs and fornication
-
or just singing blasphemous songs
-
that are just taking jabs at the Bible
-
and jabs at Christianity and stuff like that.
-
I mean, music like that abounds.
-
But to put in the effort and the work
-
and then use your talents for the Lord, right?
-
That is praiseworthy.
-
And so he was an accomplished musician.
-
But not only that, the Bible says
-
he was a mighty valiant man
-
because in verse 18 it says he was cunning in playing
-
and a mighty valiant man.
-
You know, isn't it a shame that so many musicians
-
get a stigma or a stereotype of being effeminate?
-
And then unfortunately effeminate musicians make this worse
-
by just proving it to be true or something like that.
-
But there's nothing inherently effeminate
-
about playing a musical instrument.
-
You don't have to be a queer little sissy
-
to be good at the piano or the guitar
-
or the trumpet or whatever.
-
So why is it though that there are so many
-
effeminate musicians out there
-
is because a lot of people just become
-
imbalanced in their lives.
-
Okay, and I'm a strong believer
-
in having balance in your life
-
and not being this one trick pony
-
but that we should all kind of,
-
for lack of a better word,
-
we should be Renaissance men
-
in the sense that we're balanced and well-rounded
-
and we do a little of this, a little of that.
-
And what happens is a lot of people,
-
they kind of just go overboard on one thing.
-
They're called nerds, right?
-
That's what it means to be like a nerd
-
or a geek or something, right?
-
It's usually somebody who just goes way all in
-
on one thing, whether that's, and it could be,
-
there's all kinds of different nerds
-
and geeks out there, you know,
-
because the science geek is totally different
-
than the Latin geek, like the classics geek
-
or the music geek or whatever.
-
And I'm kind of being silly and poking fun
-
but at the end of the day though,
-
we should all seek for balance in our life
-
and so it's great to see a guy like David
-
who is intelligent and he can play music beautifully
-
but he can also get out there and fight
-
and be manly and he's not being this soft musician.
-
And so I think that a reason why a lot of musicians
-
could be effeminate or get the stigma of being effeminate
-
is because basically they're just kind of indoors
-
practicing their instrument for hours and hours
-
at the expense of going outside and getting physical
-
and touching grass and doing stuff like more physical
-
but here's the thing, there's 24 hours in the day.
-
And even the most committed professional musicians
-
they usually only practice for three, four hours a day.
-
You know, what are you doing for the rest of the day?
-
Get a, become a lumberjack or something, I don't know.
-
Just get a physical job and if you don't have
-
a physical job then you know what?
-
You gotta get out, hit the gym,
-
play sports, wrestle, do something
-
because you don't wanna become imbalanced.
-
You know, and then some of you,
-
muscle heads out there, need to maybe get some smarts
-
or learn how to play a little music or something.
-
Get a little balance in your life
-
because we don't wanna just be these rugged, manly men
-
who have no appreciation for beauty and art, right?
-
You wanna, yeah, you wanna be rugged and manly
-
but you know what?
-
Maybe you should do some music
-
and maybe you should do some art
-
and maybe you should be a little more of an intellectual
-
instead of just being some kind of a big dumb animal, okay?
-
But then some of you intellectuals out there
-
or musicians or whatever, you know,
-
you need to get out there
-
and become a little more of an animal, you know?
-
And get out there and play sports, get in shape,
-
get outside, get in the sun, socialize
-
and not become soft and weak
-
just because you're playing an instrument for hours
-
doesn't mean you have to be soft and weak, you know?
-
And here's the thing, our world
-
wants us all to be super specialized
-
whereas I think we should strive in our lives
-
to be balanced because think about it.
-
You know what?
-
When society wants you to be super specialized,
-
do they want you to be super specialized
-
because that's what's best for you
-
or is it because it's what's best for them?
-
You know, yeah, obviously the machine of society
-
wants these super specialized cogs
-
to just kind of do their job and be in their place
-
but what's best for you as a person is to be well-rounded
-
and if we study the Bible,
-
we're gonna see that God praises music
-
and playing music and singing and being musical.
-
He also praises being strong and being manly
-
and being a warrior and being physical
-
and doing these things.
-
And then he also praises wisdom and knowledge
-
and reading and learning.
-
So if God's telling you, get wisdom,
-
get instruction, get knowledge, right?
-
But then over here, he's also telling you,
-
be a man, fight the good fight, you know?
-
And then over here, he's telling you,
-
play skillfully with a loud noise.
-
I don't think that God wants us to be super specialized
-
because people become imbalanced.
-
They become so super intellectual
-
they can't relate to normal people.
-
You become, you know,
-
you just become so physical and sports and everything
-
and then it's like you're just,
-
you need to get some smarts.
-
You know, you need to appreciate the finer things
-
and you know, that's part of the reason why
-
we as men need to get married
-
because if we didn't get married,
-
like our houses would just be like super utilitarian.
-
There'd be no decorations.
-
It would just be like just so minimal
-
and, you know, it would be weird.
-
Whereas like, you know, you need that woman's touch.
-
You ever walk into a house and you're like,
-
yeah, there's not a woman who lives here?
-
Or you walk in and you know,
-
the woman does live here
-
because she, you know, adds a woman's touch.
-
You know, we need balance in our lives
-
and that's one of the things about getting married
-
is that your spouse kind of balances you out a little bit.
-
You know, your wife kind of tones you down a little
-
or fires you up or whatever you need, you know.
-
And this is why a lot of times opposites attract.
-
We can kind of compliment each other
-
and fill in for each other's weaknesses
-
and help each other out
-
and become greater than the sum of our parts.
-
But it's important that we as Christians have balance
-
because here's the thing.
-
Look at churches that are imbalanced.
-
I mean, there are churches that are obsessed with one issue
-
and that's all they talk about and all they think about.
-
You know, there's a certain church I'm thinking of
-
where the pastor just preaches
-
for months and months and months,
-
every sermon is political.
-
Every sermon's about liberty, freedom,
-
the United States, the Constitution,
-
the Declaration of Independence
-
for month after month after month.
-
You go to other churches and it's just everything
-
is just one subject.
-
Oh, it's just family, family, family.
-
It's just all sermons about the family, everything.
-
It's just you don't wanna be balanced.
-
Other sermons, it'll be prophecy
-
and it's just that's all the guy preaches about
-
is just prophecy, just prophecy.
-
Other guy, oh, I'm just a creation ministry.
-
It's just only gonna talk about creation.
-
These people tend to be very imbalanced
-
because I think that church should preach the whole Bible.
-
We should read the whole Bible.
-
We should all be interested in prophecy.
-
We should be interested in the family.
-
We should be interested in hard preaching against sin.
-
We should wanna learn doctrine about Jesus.
-
We should wanna learn about who Jesus is,
-
the life of Jesus Christ, his death,
-
barrel, resurrection, all those nuances.
-
We wanna be general practitioners,
-
not super hyper specialists where we're imbalanced
-
because, you know, other churches
-
are only positive all the time.
-
Like Joel Osteen's like, well, you know,
-
I don't talk about hell because I'm more of a coach.
-
I'm more of a motivator.
-
And so I only wanna talk about that which is positive.
-
He's only preaching that which is positive.
-
But then you'll have other people,
-
every sermon's super negative.
-
It's all hellfire and damnation
-
and there's nothing positive.
-
And I remember when we were in the preaching class,
-
sometimes I would assign to different guys
-
topics to get them out of their comfort zone
-
because in the preaching class there'd be a guy
-
who shows up and he just rips face every week.
-
And then I told that guy, hey, next week
-
you're gonna preach a Mother's Day sermon.
-
You know, or you're gonna preach, you know,
-
whatever the sermon on love and charity and grace
-
or whatever.
-
And then there's another guy
-
that just he can just never rip any face.
-
He's just preaching all these soft sermons.
-
And I told him, I said, look,
-
there's gotta be something that makes you mad,
-
that gets you fired up.
-
Figure out which sin bothers you the most
-
and I want you to get real mad about it
-
and get up and preach a hard sermon.
-
You know, and just show us that you can preach hard
-
because why?
-
We wanna have balance.
-
You don't wanna be negative all the time.
-
You don't wanna be positive all the time.
-
You gotta preach the whole Bible.
-
And in our lives we don't wanna be super athletic
-
but dumb as a brick.
-
And we don't wanna be super smart
-
and super good on music
-
but just we get winded going up the stairs
-
because we're gonna die young like that.
-
You know, you gotta be healthy.
-
You gotta be balanced.
-
You gotta have the whole package and try not to be.
-
And you know, this is what we try to do
-
with people at our church
-
because we've had people at our church.
-
You know, they're super into serving God
-
and they love the Lord and they love soul winning
-
and the Bible and the preaching
-
but it's like they're just so bad at socializing
-
or they just don't even wanna socialize
-
and they don't care.
-
So it's like, we'll go soul winning.
-
It's like, hey, let's go for food afterward.
-
And they're just like, oh, I gotta go.
-
Like they can never show up to any activity
-
if there's fun involved.
-
And you know what?
-
These people never make it in the long run.
-
They seem super spiritual.
-
Like you see these people are like, whoa,
-
this guy's a whole nother level.
-
Like he's just all work, no play
-
and he's just soul winning machine
-
and just constant Bible reading, but no fellowship.
-
And it's like, I'm thinking of several,
-
I'm not even thinking of one person.
-
I'm thinking of several people
-
over the years that have been like this
-
where it's like, they don't know how to have fun.
-
They don't know how to laugh.
-
They don't know how to show up
-
and just eat a meal with people
-
and just hang out and talk.
-
They will literally,
-
if there's nothing spiritual going out at the activity,
-
they won't come.
-
Hey, drop me off before you go out to eat
-
or they'll just be off in the corner with their butt
-
like they're Jewish or something.
-
And they're just like,
-
it's like, bro, you need to become a normal person.
-
And I'm telling you, these people,
-
they seem super spiritual.
-
None of them is still here right now.
-
It's not a single person in our church like that
-
right now.
-
Yet I can think of several examples over the years.
-
Why are they not here?
-
Where are they?
-
You know what?
-
I'll tell you where a lot of these people are
-
is they go off the deep end,
-
they get out of church,
-
they crash and burn,
-
they get back slidden,
-
they stay home, whatever.
-
Let me tell you something.
-
If you are imbalanced,
-
you're like a cake not turned as the Bible says.
-
You wanna be complete and entire wanting nothing.
-
You don't wanna be lacking in your Christian life.
-
You wanna add to your faith virtue
-
and add temperance and add charity.
-
You wanna have the whole package
-
and not just be partially done.
-
And I'm telling you, you might think like,
-
oh, I'm just too super spiritual to hang out
-
and have fun and fellowship.
-
You're imbalanced.
-
And it's like, oh, I'm just going to the gym
-
and working out and playing sports.
-
That stuff's also carnal.
-
It's good for you.
-
It's good for you physically.
-
It's good for your soul.
-
It's good for you actually mentally to actually do.
-
And you know what?
-
I think that people were smarter
-
when they're learning the whole package
-
and getting a variety of subjects.
-
Then if they just go super specialized on one thing,
-
you gotta be cross trained.
-
Even in your job, like when you're a tradesman,
-
it's good to know what the other trades are doing
-
and how to interface with them
-
and how to interact with them
-
and not be so super specialized
-
that you only know your job and nothing else.
-
So not only is David an accomplished musician,
-
he is also, and the Bible calls him, quote,
-
the sweet psalmist of Israel.
-
So he's the sweet psalmist of Israel,
-
but he's also a mighty man of valor.
-
He's also a man of war.
-
He's a warrior.
-
He's a fighter.
-
Now look, that sounds like a pretty good balance.
-
He's this sweet psalmist
-
writing all these lovey-dovey psalms
-
and then he can turn around and kick some butt.
-
It sounds like a great guy.
-
I like him already.
-
So number four, he was an accomplished musician.
-
Number five, he was a mighty man.
-
And obviously that's talking about his physical prowess.
-
We should also seek to be mighty spiritually, right?
-
We want to be spiritually strong,
-
not just physically strong.
-
We want to be spiritually strong as men.
-
The Bible says, finally my brethren,
-
be strong in the Lord and in the power of his might.
-
Thou, therefore, my son, be strong in the grace
-
that is in Christ Jesus.
-
Now go to Deuteronomy chapter 31.
Deuteronomy 31 chapter mention
-
Deuteronomy 31, David was a man after God's own heart.
-
I want to be a man after God's own heart.
-
We all want to be people after God's own heart.
-
We want to be people that God looks down on
-
and he's pleased with us and he likes us.
-
You know, because it also says of David
-
that God quote, liked him.
-
David said he liked me about God in chronicles.
-
And so number one, what made him such a great man of God?
-
Well, he did a humble job and he gave it his best.
-
Number two, he's good looking,
-
but he didn't let that go to his head.
-
Now look, you can be as ugly as homemade sin
-
and still be a man after God's own heart,
-
a woman after God's own heart.
-
In fact, the uglier you are,
-
probably the better chance you have
-
of being a man after God's own heart
-
or a woman after God's own heart
-
because you know, God uses very few
-
mighty, noble, wise, good-looking people.
-
You just, he chooses very few people like that.
-
Most people that do great things for God
-
are gonna be delinquent in some area
-
because then that keeps him humble
-
and then God gets all the glory.
-
And even David, even though he's a good-looking guy,
-
he's small of stature.
-
So when he goes up against Goliath,
-
David kind of seems like a joke
-
compared to Goliath physically
-
and then God gets the glory for David defeating Goliath.
-
So he's good-looking, didn't let it go to his head.
-
Number three, he's spirit-filled.
-
You know, you're not gonna do great things for God
-
if you're not spirit-filled.
-
And if you're living a life of sin,
-
then you're gonna lose that privilege
-
just like King Saul did.
-
Number four, he's an accomplished musician.
-
God likes that.
-
Number five, he was a mighty man.
-
He's a strong man.
-
He's a powerful man.
-
He wasn't a weak little sissy.
-
He was a strong man.
-
And look, obviously some people
-
are gonna be naturally stronger than others,
-
but those that are weak should get a little stronger.
-
Those that are dumb should get a little smarter, right?
-
Those that have a deficiency,
-
we should work on our weaknesses.
-
You know, the world sometimes will tell us
-
to just work on our strengths.
-
So we can be a super-specialized cog in the machine,
-
but I think we should all work on our weaknesses
-
and try to be well-rounded, healthy individuals
-
that can be in church for decades.
-
And we know how to fellowship.
-
We know how to win souls.
-
We know the Bible.
-
We know how to get along with people.
-
We can go out and talk to the worldly people
-
out at the doorstep, and we can go to the res,
-
and we can go to the ghetto,
-
and we can go to the rich area,
-
and we can talk to everybody
-
and connect with as many people as we can
-
and preach the gospel to all kinds of people,
-
get along with each other, have a good time,
-
be in it for the long haul.
-
So he's a great musician.
-
He's a mighty man, but he's also a valiant man.
-
Now what does it mean to be a valiant man?
-
To be a valiant man means courageous.
-
This means that you are brave.
-
Now look at Deuteronomy chapter 31, verse six,
Deuteronomy 31 chapter mention
-
it says, be strong and of a good courage.
-
Fear not, nor be afraid of them.
-
So notice the opposite of being courageous
-
is being afraid, right?
-
And he says here, be strong and of a good courage.
-
These things go together.
-
Mighty, valiant man.
-
God wants us to be strong physically,
-
but he also wants us to have spiritual strength
-
because when they're filled with the Holy Spirit,
-
they spoke the word of God with boldness.
-
They weren't scared and afraid.
-
And you know, the biggest problem with preachers
-
in America is that they're scared to preach.
-
What needs to be preached?
-
They need to be valiant men.
-
They need to be strong and of a good courage
-
and stop fearing persecution.
-
The Bible says, fear none of those things.
-
It's not supposed to suffer.
-
Don't fear the faces of the congregation.
-
And look, I've been up here preaching
-
and had people glare at me and fold their arms
-
and look at me and it's like, okay,
-
let's park it on that point.
-
Let's turn this into the whole sermon.
-
One thing I've learned is that
-
you can't always judge people's faces
-
because I've looked at some people
-
and I thought, oh, this person hates me
-
and they walk up to me afterwards
-
and just said, that was the most awesome sermon ever.
-
And I'm just like, great.
-
Other people are smiling at me the whole time
-
and it's like, yeah, I hate this
-
and I'm never coming back.
-
Like, wow, you looked like you were so happy.
-
You know, so you can't always judge a book by its cover
-
but at the same time, even if people do hate you,
-
even if people are glaring at you,
-
getting up and walking out,
-
you know what the Bible says?
-
Be not afraid of their faces.
-
Be of a good courage.
-
The Lord is with us who could be against us.
-
For the Lord thy God, verse six, be there.
-
He it is that doth go with thee,
-
he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.
-
And Moses called unto Joshua and said unto him,
-
in the sight of all Israel,
-
be strong and of a good courage.
-
For thou must go with this people
-
into the land which the Lord has sworn
-
of their fathers to give them
-
and thou shalt cause them to inherit it.
-
And the Lord, he it is that doth go before thee,
-
he will be with thee, he will not fail thee,
-
neither forsake thee,
-
fear not, neither be dismayed.
-
So the opposite of valor is when you're just dismayed
-
and disheartened and you're throwing in the towel
-
and you're scared and you don't wanna face the enemy.
-
We gotta be valiant.
-
You wanna be a man after God's own heart?
-
I mean, God looks down and he says,
-
man, David is a man after my heart.
-
I like this guy.
-
You know why I like him?
-
Because he's not doing his humble job
-
and he's working hard at it
-
and he's doing it with his might
-
and he's jamming on that harp
-
and it sounds awesome
-
and he's not some soft little queer effeminate musician
-
but he's also a bad dude that can get down
-
and throw down if he needs to
-
and he's not a weakling.
-
And you know what else I like about him?
-
I like the fact that he has guts,
-
that he has courage, that he has valor.
-
Look at Joshua, just a couple pages to the right,
-
Joshua chapter one, verse six.
-
And look, this is the Bible.
-
Oh, I don't really like David.
-
I don't like the character David.
-
I don't know, do you like the Bible?
-
Cause he's mentioned like 1,100 sometimes.
-
If you like the Bible, you better start liking David
-
cause it's kind of hard to like the Bible
-
without liking David.
-
You certainly don't like the Old Testament very much
-
if you don't like David.
-
This is kind of the main character in many ways.
-
Joshua chapter one, verse six.
-
Be strong and have a good courage.
-
For unto this people shall thou divide
-
for an inheritance of the land
-
which I swear unto their fathers to give them.
-
Only be thou strong and very courageous.
-
He said, you know, what does that mean?
-
Only be thou strong and very courageous.
-
He said, look, this is the one thing
-
that's gonna screw you up more than anything else.
-
Like you can do this as long as
-
you just only do this one thing,
-
be strong and courageous and it's gonna be fine.
-
To me, when I see that word only there,
-
it kind of spells out
-
that this is probably his biggest potential pitfall.
-
He's like, look, it's gonna work.
-
Only be strong and courageous.
-
Sounds to me like if you're not strong and courageous,
-
you're gonna crash and burn.
-
This seems to be the principal thing.
-
He says, do, or sorry, verse seven.
-
Only be thou strong and very courageous
-
that thou mayest observe to do according to all the law
-
which Moses my servant commanded thee.
-
You know, it sounds to me like it takes guts
-
to follow the Bible.
-
He says, you're gonna need courage and strength
-
in order to do everything that the Bible
-
is telling you to do.
-
So you know what makes you the baddest dude?
-
You know what means that you have guts
-
is when you have the guts to say,
-
as for me in my house, we will serve the Lord
-
and you actually follow the Bible and obey the Bible,
-
that makes you a lot tougher
-
than being some guy who goes around
-
and gets in physical fist fights.
-
Because when I talk about being a man of war
-
and being strong and courageous and being tough,
-
I'm not talking about being a brawler.
-
The Bible says that being brawler is a bad thing.
-
Being a striker is a bad thing.
-
Going out and picking fights with people
-
and you know, going out and doing violence
-
or getting in these ego trip fights with people,
-
there's no glory in that.
-
That's not what the Bible is saying here.
-
The Bible is talking about being athletic
-
and being a fighter in legitimate scenarios
-
like going off to war as a soldier
-
and being a great warrior in a situation
-
where you're supposed to be fighting
-
or where you're training and sparring
-
and doing those kind of fights
-
or just being physically strong so that you can work hard
-
and swing that axe or swing that hammer
-
or run that, what do they call it?
-
Jackhammer or power drill or whatever.
-
But he says, be strong and courageous
-
that that may as observed to do according to all the law.
-
The biggest thing that takes guts in 2026 America
-
is standing on the word of God
-
and following the word of God
-
and doing what the Bible says.
-
You know, it's like, oh, I'm so scared.
-
And look, people are often scared to do the right thing.
-
Why don't people go soul winning?
-
Some of it is like, well, I'm scared.
-
I'm scared, I'm nervous.
-
Like, what am I just gonna knock
-
on some random person's door?
-
Super embarrassing, I've stage fright, I'm scared.
-
I can't do it, you know,
-
some people won't go soul winning because they're scared.
-
You know, and then now we have these broads
-
that are calling themselves pastor's wives
-
teaching and saying, oh, well, if you're scared,
-
leave your husband if you're scared.
-
How about this?
-
Have the guts to do right.
-
You know, if I was scared of my wife
-
and you know, I'd just stay married
-
because I'd just be like, well, you know,
-
I'd rather just be in God's will.
-
And you know, hopefully she doesn't come
-
kill me in my sleep, you know?
-
But it's like, it is what it is.
-
If I perish, I perish.
-
That's what Esther said.
-
If I perish, I perish.
-
But now in 2026,
-
the Independent Fundamental Baptist are like,
-
oh, you know, just all the, you know,
-
if there's, if you're scared at all,
-
I mean, you got to just get out of there for your safety.
-
It's so stupid.
-
It's the dumbest advice.
-
And here's the thing, if your husband's that scary,
-
you know, leaving him's probably just gonna set him off.
-
He'll probably come kill you.
-
He'll just come find you and kill you.
-
He's not gonna care about the restraining order.
-
He's not gonna care about the gun for his own.
-
He's gonna take the gun into the gun for his own.
-
Okay, because if he's that much of a psycho
-
and that much of a weirdo, you know what?
-
Then maybe you should just trust in the Lord a little bit
-
because it sounds like only God can save you from this guy.
-
And my bigger question is,
-
why did you marry this guy in the first place?
-
Why are you out there marrying a psycho?
-
Why are you marrying, you know,
-
a lot of times unsaved people or rotten people
-
or known fornicators and adulterers and stuff.
-
But then it's like, oh no, I'm so scared.
-
Well, you know what?
-
If I'm scared to do the right thing,
-
I'm just gonna do the right thing anyway.
-
If I'm scared to go soul winning,
-
I'm gonna go soul winning anyway.
-
Scared to preach on a subject,
-
I'm just gonna preach it anyway.
-
Oh, I'm scared of my wife.
-
Well, you know what?
-
I'm gonna stay married anyway.
-
And no, I'm not actually scared of my wife.
-
Although I am glad she's on our side, amen.
-
You know, because she's formidable.
-
She's no joke, you know?
-
I mean, this kid threatened not too long ago,
-
this kid, or I say kid, he was almost 18.
-
He was like almost 18, so he's pretty much a grown man.
-
He threatened to come and I wasn't here,
-
but he came and said that he was gonna come
-
and shoot up our house and kill our whole family.
-
And I wasn't here, my wife was there.
-
And she said, she's like, let me tell you
-
how the house is laid out.
-
She said there's this one staircase
-
and everybody's up there.
-
And she's like, I'm gonna be at the top of that stairs
-
and I'm gonna blow your bleepin' head off
-
and I'm not even gonna care.
-
I'm not even gonna think twice about it.
-
Amen.
-
I mean, if somebody comes to kill our family,
-
my wife's like, let's go.
-
You know?
-
She's like, make my day, punk.
-
She's like, I'm gonna be at the top of the stairs
-
and I'm armed to the teeth.
-
And she's like, I'm gonna kill you
-
and I'm gonna empty every round into your body
-
and it's gonna be a suicide mission for you, buddy.
-
So don't even think about it.
-
Amen.
-
But I'm not scared of her.
-
I'm the boss of her.
-
She answers to me.
-
But you know what, the shooters,
-
the terrorists of this world are shooters
-
and burglars, they ought to be very afraid.
-
And I'm glad she's on our side.
-
Because she doesn't play.
-
So, how did I get off on that?
-
I was kind of a wild little rabbit trail.
-
But the thing is that being valiant
-
means having the guts to do what's right.
-
And yeah, we can all picture it on the battlefield.
-
You're charging the enemy.
-
You're not scared.
-
You're not retreating.
-
You're not breaking ranks.
-
But how about spiritually having the guts
-
to basically turn down alcohol when it's offered to you?
-
Turn down drugs when they're offered to you, right?
-
Turn down women that are offered to you
-
that are not your wife.
-
And when the opportunity to fornicate is there,
-
having the guts to say, no, this isn't right.
-
This is not being peer pressured into fornication,
-
adultery, whatever.
-
Or, oh hey, let me show you something on my phone.
-
And they want to show you pornography.
-
How about having the guts to say,
-
hey, get that out of my sight.
-
I'm not gonna look at that.
-
That's trash.
-
The guts to stay married.
-
The guts to do what's right in every scenario.
-
All of this takes courage.
-
And the problem with Christians today
-
is there are a bunch of cowards in many cases.
-
They don't have the guts to stand up for Christ,
-
to preach the gospel, to stand for what's right,
-
to speak against sin, to speak out against wickedness
-
and perversion.
-
They want to go with the flow
-
because they're weak and soft
-
and they're not mighty men of valor.
-
So he's a valiant man.
-
He has the courage to do what the Bible says.
-
Look at verse eight.
-
This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth.
-
We're still in Joshua chapter one.
-
But thou shalt meditate therein day and night
-
that thou mayest observe to do
-
according to all that is written therein.
-
For then thou shalt make thy way prosperous
-
and then thou shalt have good success.
-
Have not I commanded thee?
-
Be strong and have a good courage.
-
He's like, look, what's the disconnect here?
-
He's like, didn't I tell you what to do?
-
So do it!
-
What's the obstacle between us doing
-
what God told us to do?
-
Like, didn't God command us?
-
I mean, didn't God command us, stay married.
-
Didn't God command us, go preach the gospel.
-
Didn't God command us, abstain from fornication.
-
You know, do not be drunk with wine.
-
Be sober.
-
Didn't God command us?
-
Okay, then why would we get in a situation
-
where we're just like, oh,
-
I'm not gonna preach the gospel.
-
Oh, I gotta drink to fit in.
-
I gotta do drugs to fit in, you know, or whatever.
-
Oh, my husband threw a raw hot dog at me
-
and now I'm scared for my life
-
so I gotta go flee or whatever.
-
You know, the Bible says the wicked flee
-
when no man pursuits.
-
I mean, look, if my wife were literally chasing me
-
with a weapon, I'd run away, you know?
-
Because at that point, it's just like,
-
yeah, I mean, that makes sense.
-
But you know what I'm not gonna do?
-
I'm not gonna flee when no one's pursuing.
-
You know, I mean, if someone's coming at you
-
and actually swinging a weapon at you
-
or pointing a weapon at you,
-
then yeah, taking cover makes a lot of sense at that point.
-
You know, I mean, if somebody walked through that door
-
right now with a weapon, you know,
-
then we'd all be ducking for cover, right?
-
Except for 30 of us would be pulling out guns
-
and blowing them away, turning them into Swiss cheese.
-
But you know, it makes sense
-
when there's actually a clear and present danger
-
that's happening right now to go run and scared,
-
but the wicked flee when no man pursuits, okay?
-
And we're not gonna run because of a pre-crime
-
because of something that might happen.
-
You know, I mean, I might get struck by lightning.
-
You know, I might get stung by a whole hive of bees
-
and die.
-
I might get killed by a shark if I go swimming in the ocean.
-
I could just get eaten by a shark.
-
But you know, at the end of the day,
-
I'm still gonna go swimming in the ocean
-
and I'll worry about it when I hear the Jaws music come on.
-
That's when I'll know that something bad's about to happen
-
or if I see a fin or something, you know.
-
One time I saw a dolphin and it looked like a shark
-
and it scared me, you know.
-
But the thing is like the wicked flee
-
when no man pursues,
-
but the righteous are as bold as a lion, right?
-
And so we need to have the courage to trust God
-
even in dangerous situations.
-
You know, I would rather walk through the valley
-
of the shadow of death knowing that God is with me
-
than to be like, oh, I gotta go be a feminist
-
and leave my spouse and whatever because I'm scared.
-
And like I said, here's the thing.
-
People that are actually in real danger,
-
they don't ask themselves what does Pastor Anderson
-
think about what I'm doing right now.
-
Like do you think that if somebody came at me
-
with a baseball bat or a gun or a club or a crowbar
-
or a knife, I'd be like, oh, I wonder what my pastor
-
friends think.
-
What would Pastor Anderson do?
-
You know, what would Jesus do even?
-
You'd just be like, you know,
-
instinct just kicks in at that point.
-
Am I right?
-
And you run away.
-
You grab something to defend yourself with.
-
You run whatever, but it's just like this stuff
-
are just like, oh, you're scared.
-
Oh, you're nervous.
-
Oh, you know, your husband has a temper.
-
Oh, your wife said something scary or whatever.
-
It's like, bro, I'm sorry,
-
but I'd rather be in the will of God
-
than out of the will of God
-
because you could be like, oh, I'm just Mr. Safety.
-
Hey, safety's of the Lord.
-
You know, if I were running from a bear
-
in the woods or something
-
and I run into the cabin and shut the door
-
and I'm in the safety of the cabin,
-
you know, God could just make a snake bite me
-
in the cabin or a spider bite me in my sleep.
-
At the end of the day, if God wants to smoke you,
-
he can smoke you whenever he wants.
-
You could just be in bed at night and something, you know,
-
or you could just be surrounded by the enemy
-
and nothing about it.
-
I mean, David wrote in one of his Psalms.
-
He says, you know, if, man, I haven't memorized
-
but I'm drawn a blank.
-
Like he said, you know, if 10,000 people
-
encamp around me, I'm not gonna be afraid.
-
I'm just gonna sleep like a baby.
-
I'm paraphrasing because I'm having trouble
-
with the actual quote.
-
But he says, I could be surrounded by 10,000 enemies
-
and I'll just sleep like a baby
-
because God's protecting me.
-
You know, so I feel like the safest thing you could do
-
is to just do whatever the Bible said to do.
-
That's always the safest thing to do.
-
He's like, oh, we gotta worry about people's safety.
-
Okay, here's the safe thing to do.
-
What the Bible says.
-
And people look, some people think it's too dangerous
-
to go soul-winning, you know,
-
because who knows what's behind that door?
-
Who knows what you're gonna run into?
-
But you know what, I'd rather be doing God's will
-
and God's work because he said,
-
I'm with you all the way, even under the end of the world.
-
And so I think being a good courage is gonna allow you
-
to do great works for God and follow the Bible
-
and fear and cowardice is gonna be the thing
-
that keeps you a lame Christian.
-
Afraid to step out in faith.
-
Afraid to give your marriage a chance.
-
Afraid to turn down drugs or alcohol or whatever.
-
Afraid to not laugh at the blasphemous, filthy jokes
-
because you wanna fit in with people.
-
I mean, it's just, fear is the enemy.
-
So one last quick point here.
-
I'm almost out of time.
-
But you know, we said he's a man of war.
-
You know, he's a mighty valiant man, he's a man of war.
-
And what does the Bible say?
-
You know, war or good warfare?
-
Fight the good fight spiritually.
-
But the last thing I wanna show you
-
is go if you would to Proverbs 12, verse 16.
-
Because we saw eight attributes of David tonight.
-
He did a humble job.
-
He's good looking, didn't let it go to his head.
-
He's filled with the Holy Spirit.
-
He's accomplished musician.
-
He's a mighty man.
-
He's a valiant man.
-
He's a man of war.
-
And lastly, it says that he's prudent in matters.
-
So even though he's got guts, he's not stupid.
-
You know, he's got courage to follow the Bible,
-
to do what's right, to fight for what's right,
-
to defend his family, to defend the flock of sheep,
-
to fight the Lord's battles.
-
He had the guts to go up against Goliath.
-
I mean, Goliath is way bigger and stronger,
-
but yet he said the Lord's gonna fight this battle.
-
The battle is the Lord's.
-
And he went and fought, he had the guts.
-
But that doesn't mean that he's stupid.
-
He's also a prudent man.
-
Now, what does it mean to be prudent in matters?
-
Well, I looked up prudent in the dictionary
-
and it means wise or judicious in practical affairs.
-
Discrete or circumspect.
-
Meaning that you're careful
-
and you know what's going on around you.
-
And you kind of know what is the practical right move to make.
-
And you're not just a bowl in a china closet,
-
just doing a bunch of stupid things,
-
saying a bunch of stupid things.
-
So let's look at prudent in the Bible.
-
Proverbs 12, 16 says a fool's wrath is presently known,
-
but a prudent man covereth shame.
-
So one of the things a prudent person does,
-
they don't just say everything
-
that's on their mind all the time.
-
You know, they're gonna hold back things.
-
Like for example, look at verse 23.
-
A prudent man concealeth knowledge,
-
but the heart of fools proclaimeth foolishness.
-
But then in chapter 13, verse 16,
-
it says every prudent man dealeth with knowledge,
-
but a fool layeth open his folly.
-
So, you know, prudence is gonna know
-
when is it appropriate to speak?
-
When is it appropriate to be silent?
-
You know, you're gonna be practical
-
and you're gonna make good, wise,
-
judicious decisions in your life.
-
And the Bible also says,
-
we'll just go through some of these quickly.
-
It says the wisdom of the prudent
-
is to understand his way.
-
Chapter 14, verse 15, the simple believeth every word,
-
but the prudent man looketh well to his going.
-
He's not gullible, he looks into things.
-
The simple inherit folly,
-
but the prudent are crowned with knowledge.
-
A fool despises father's instruction,
-
but he that regardeth reproof is prudent.
-
The wise in heart shall be called prudent.
-
The sweetness of the lips increase at learning.
-
The heart of the prudent geteth knowledge.
-
And so I think one of the themes
-
that you'll see with prudence in the book of Proverbs
-
has to do with knowledge, learning, and intelligence,
-
but also how to practically apply those things
-
and know when to speak and when not to speak.
-
So, it sounds to me like David is a Renaissance man.
-
He's got the whole package.
-
He's a balanced guy.
-
He's spiritual.
-
He's artistic.
-
He's physical.
-
He's intellectual.
-
And obviously, we're all gonna have our strengths
-
and weaknesses, but I think that we should work
-
on our weaknesses and try to be the most well-rounded
-
Christian people that we can be
-
so that God can use us in a variety of ways.
-
And so that we can succeed,
-
not just in one area of life, but in others.
-
I wanna be healthy so that I can physically
-
go out and do the serving of God.
-
I mean, look, I've taken people out soul-winning
-
for the first time and they just couldn't physically
-
keep up.
-
Like, I've taken people on a mission strip
-
and they're just like, well, I'm not used
-
to walking this much, you know?
-
And the Bible says how beautiful are the feet
-
of them that preach the gospel.
-
Because preaching the gospel, you use your feet a lot.
-
Now, look, if you're older or if you're injured
-
or if you're in some way impaired,
-
God can still use you as a soul-winning.
-
You can go soul-winning in a wheelchair.
-
But I'm saying in general,
-
if you don't have to be in a wheelchair,
-
why would you, you don't wanna just choose the wheelchair?
-
Am I right?
-
So it's like, you wanna make sure
-
that you're at least in good enough shape
-
to where when you go soul-winning at the apartment complex,
-
you can walk up the stairs and knock that door.
-
Or you can get off the cruise ship
-
and walk to the soul-winning field.
-
And you know, some people, they struggle physically.
-
We wanna be in the best shape again.
-
Obviously, we're all gonna get old someday.
-
We're all gonna get injured at times and things.
-
But we should just do the best with what we've got.
-
We can do the best with what we've got, that's all.
-
Be as healthy as we can be.
-
We wanna be as smart as we can be.
-
Study to show ourselves approved under God.
-
You know, be well-rounded.
-
Why? Because if we're not smart,
-
if we're not studying the Bible,
-
we could be tossed to and fro with every wind of doctrine.
-
Cause we don't know the word of God.
-
So we need the knowledge.
-
But you know what? Knowledge puffs us up.
-
Knowledge can just make you arrogant.
-
So knowledge puffs us up, but charity edifies.
-
So we need to not only have the smarts,
-
but we also need to be able to condescend
-
to men of low estate and be humble enough
-
to talk to simple people about simple things.
-
You know? And look, I'm glad you go soul-winning,
-
but you know what?
-
You should also have a little fun and fellowship too.
-
Cause if you're all work, no play, I'm telling you,
-
you're not gonna pan out in the long run.
-
I've never seen it.
-
Never seen anybody pan out in the long run
-
who doesn't know how to have a good time.
-
You know? And look at the Bible.
-
They're making merry.
-
They're having fun.
-
You know, David, he's a guy who he gets excited and has fun.
-
When the Ark of the Covenant came to Jerusalem,
-
he's dancing and playing before the Lord with all his might.
-
He's just out there just cutting loose,
-
dancing and playing the harp and praising God.
-
He's physical, he's spiritual, he's mental.
-
He's got the whole, you know,
-
we should strive for balance in our lives.
-
And we should strive to have these godly attributes
-
of a man after God's own heart.
-
Courage, strength, wisdom, prudence.
-
These are all the things that made David
-
a man after God's own heart.
-
Let's bow our heads and have a word of prayer.
-
Father, we thank you so much for your word, Lord.
-
And thank you for David,
-
that we could learn so much from him and see
-
what it was about him that made him
-
a man after your own heart.
-
And Lord, of course, you created us.
-
You created us to be artistic.
-
You created us to be physical.
-
You created us to be intelligent, Lord.
-
And so you must love those things
-
because you instilled those things in us, Lord.
-
Help us to cultivate those things
-
and be the best, most fruitful, effective,
-
healthy Christians that we can possibly be.
-
And in Jesus' name we pray amen.
