  1. Welcome to the Kingdom Family Podcast, where

  2. we rediscover our identity as sons and daughters

  3. of Yahweh and learn to live the life of the Kingdom.

  4. Let's jump in to today's episode. Well, hey,

  5. guys, welcome back to week five of Rethinking

  6. Hell. This week, we jump in to the discussion

  7. of judgment. And I want you to ask yourself when

  8. it comes to the word judgment, is it punishment

  9. or is it restoration? I would go on a limb to

  10. say that another word that has been deeply misunderstood

  11. is the word judgment. Um, the same with, uh,

  12. as we discovered with last week's episode on

  13. fire and that fire is not just destructive, but

  14. that fire is also refining. Is that to dismiss

  15. the concept and the truth that fire can be destructive?

  16. Absolutely not. But again, we have to ask ourselves

  17. what is fire actually destroying and then what

  18. other purposes does fire serve? And so the same

  19. is true with the word and the concept of judgment

  20. and I like how I believe it's Damon Thompson

  21. I heard this from several years ago that if you

  22. want to know what the judgment of God looks like

  23. We have a book in the Old Testament called judges

  24. Maybe we should look at that because if you consider

  25. a judge in scripture Judge is not the Western

  26. concept of a judge. It's not someone sitting

  27. in a black robe in a courtroom with the defense

  28. attorney and all that. That is not what the word

  29. judge or judgment would have meant in Scripture.

  30. So just take a step back for a minute before

  31. we dive in too much. Just when you hear the word

  32. judgment, what do you yourself picture? Do you

  33. picture punishment or do you picture restoration?

  34. And I think that's important for us to consider.

  35. And as soon as we dive into this, just to start

  36. off here, if you look at the word judgment in

  37. the Greek, it's the word crisis, and it means

  38. decision, evaluation, separation, discernment.

  39. It's actually where we get the English word crisis.

  40. Originally a crisis was not simply a disaster.

  41. It was the decisive moment where everything changes

  42. the point at which a decision or an outcome becomes

  43. unavoidable. And so let's look at the scripture

  44. as we start this out. Let's look at John chapter

    John 3:19

  45. 3 verse 19 and it says and here is the basis

  46. for their judgment. The light of God has now

  47. come into the world, but the people loved darkness

  48. to conceal their evil The mirror a paraphrase

  49. says this and this is the crisis the light is

  50. here now Rightness, excuse me. The light is here

  51. right now yet people are so addicted to their

  52. own darkness that they prefer a life of labors

  53. annoyances and hardships So if you look at just

  54. what Francois Dutois says here in the mirror

  55. paraphrase, that people are so addicted to their

  56. own darkness that they prefer a life of labors,

  57. annoyances, and hardships. So this is the crisis.

  58. This is that judgment, that the light is here

  59. right now. Yet people are so addicted to their

  60. own darkness that they prefer a life of labors,

  61. annoyances, and hardship. So you have to begin

  62. to ask the question here, what is the judgment

  63. coming to do? What is it coming to remove? And

  64. again, I think if you look at the mirror paraphrase,

  65. you can kind of begin to see some truth into

  66. what that judgment is coming to deal with. Because

  67. this is the judgment. that light is here right

  68. now but yet for some reason even when light shows

  69. up people are still so addicted to their own

  70. darkness that they prefer a life of labor's annoyances

  71. and hardships instead of allowing that judgment

  72. to come in and deal with the things that are

  73. causing the labor's the annoyances and the hardships.

  74. They would rather stay in that darkness than

  75. allow light to come in and deal with these things.

  76. How many times do we do that even in our own

  77. lives still today? That we went when his light

  78. shows up and I like to say it this way this way

  79. Whatever he reveals he intends to heal but that

  80. means you and I have to be willing That when

  81. the Holy Spirit comes to reveal something that

  82. we allow him into those areas to heal Just something

  83. for us to think about and to wrestle with when

  84. he when he brings light to expose something in

  85. our life, his intent is not to bring any kind

  86. of devastation. It's not to bring any kind of

  87. destruction, but it's not meant to bring any

  88. kind of punishment. No, it is meant to come and

  89. restore. So again, the word crisis is often translated

  90. as judgment, but it also is a decisive moment.

  91. It's the opportunity. And again, think about

  92. what we just read. It's the opportunity for change.

  93. The word for evil. is Pinaros and it translates

  94. full of hardships, annoyances and labors. So

  95. that's just something for you to think about.

  96. That's Francois Dutoy's note on the mirror paraphrase

  97. here. But if you look at this and John 3 19 is

  98. Jesus speaking. And Jesus in this passage, he

  99. never says anything about judgment being God

  100. becoming angry. He defines it as light exposing

  101. reality and people end up revealing what they

  102. love or let me say it this way. They end up revealing

  103. what they think they love. The judgment is the

  104. unveiling. That's what the judgment is. It's

  105. the unveiling of now you get a choice. Which

  106. one do you love? And listen, I know we have scripture

  107. that says that sin is pleasurable for a season.

  108. But you know what love continues to do just like

  109. with my own children love will continue to show

  110. up and Continue to expose and to reveal and ask

  111. you permission to heal Ask your permission. Well,

  112. my light is coming to expose this area of your

  113. life Will you allow my judgment to deal with

  114. it? Go listen, it's fascinating go read the book

  115. of Judges in the Old Testament if you'll go do

  116. that You will see that every time Israel falls

  117. away and walks away from God and then begins

  118. to ask for God to step back into the picture

  119. and help them There is always God always raises

  120. up a judge to come against what not come against

  121. Israel It's to come against and like to say it

  122. this way. I got it from Damon Thompson It's to

  123. come against whatever interferes with you and

  124. love essentially What what is interfering between

  125. you and the love of the father? That's what he's

  126. coming to deal with. That's where his judgment

  127. is aimed at and you see crisis can often be understood

  128. as the moment when truth exposes reality and

  129. calls for a response Judgment in this sense is

  130. not is not punitive, it is the revealing and

  131. separating work of truth. Light shines, motives

  132. are uncovered, and reality is brought into the

  133. open. And what follows depends on the context.

  134. Sometimes it results in restoration, sometimes

  135. it's vindication, sometimes it's correction,

  136. sometimes condemnation, but only when the context

  137. indicates the outcome. And so I think that is

  138. why this passage is important as Jesus is not

  139. defining judgment as God's wrath falling from

  140. heaven He defines it as the light entering the

  141. world. It's exposing hearts and forcing a decision

  142. That nuance can change how we read many New Testament

  143. passages about judgment that light enters our

  144. world it exposes hearts and then a decision is

  145. A decision is almost demanded in that moment.

  146. What would you do? My light has showed up. My

  147. love has showed up. My light has showed up into

  148. this moment. It's entered your world. It's exposing

  149. things. Now what are you going to allow me to

  150. do in this moment? Are you going to allow me

  151. into this area to heal it? Or are you going to

  152. continuously try to hide this and allow darkness

  153. to settle in in this moment? And let me tell

  154. you this, this is where it begins to affect us.

  155. Because the harder that you choose to make your

  156. grip on it, the more that you're going to feel

  157. the effect of when the Father comes to remove

  158. whatever this is. But if you willingly, when

  159. the Holy Spirit brings light and exposure to

  160. an area, if you will willingly lay that down,

  161. and be like, okay, here it is. You do whatever

  162. you need to do. If you willingly lay it down,

  163. it becomes much easier. And trust me, I have

  164. been on both sides of that. I've been on the

  165. side of willingly laying something down and it

  166. was much easier than me trying to hold on to

  167. something and to have the notion that, well,

  168. I don't know, I'll deal with it when I'm ready

  169. or I can fix this by myself because we can't.

  170. That's just the truth. We can't we can't there's

  171. nothing that I can fix on my own. I Don't have

  172. that that power That's why again. It's the Holy

  173. Spirit that brings transformation into our lives

  174. It's the Holy Spirit who who reveals more and

  175. more of the Christ inside of me who exposes and

  176. allows me to look at the face of Yeshua and then

  177. realize that I'm found in that reflection Just

  178. think about that as powerful Alright then we

  179. got John chapter 5 verse 22 and it says the father

    John 5:22

  180. judges no one for he has given to the son all

  181. the authority to judge and then we jump down

  182. to verse 24 and it says I speak to you in eternal

  183. truth if you embrace my message and believe in

  184. the one who sent me you will never face condemnation

  185. in me you have already passed from the realm

  186. of death into eternal life. Think about that

  187. statement. In me, you have already passed from

  188. the realm of death into eternal life. Inside

  189. of Christ, you that's why and I probably mentioned

  190. this before in an earlier podcast, I don't know

  191. if it was for this this series or another one.

  192. But you go back and look at when scripture says

  193. that it's appointed for man once to die. I would

  194. like to say congratulations. If you find yourself

  195. in Christ, you have already died. You were co

  196. -crucified, co -buried, co -resurrected, co -glorified,

  197. and now you're co -seated with Christ in the

  198. heavenly places. You're not seating next to Christ.

  199. You're seated inside of Christ at the right hand

  200. of the Father. Think about this you were co -crucified

  201. stop stop having this belief that you need to

  202. crucify your flesh Your flesh has already been

  203. dealt with that Adam that first Adam nature has

  204. already been dealt with There is no there is

  205. absolutely no sin nature There is a thing called

  206. original sin, but there is never a thing called

  207. sin nature And I'm here to remind you that sin

  208. was dealt with effectively by the finished work

  209. of Christ He defeated the power of guilt he defeated

  210. the power of shame and he defeated the power

  211. of sin in our lives if we will allow that victory

  212. to resonate inside of us and to reign over our

  213. life. Then we understand that in him, we have

  214. already passed from the realm of death. And guess

  215. what? Right now, this this moment that you're

  216. in this, this this moment that you find yourself

  217. breathing in what I would term as Christological

  218. air. Again, another Damon Thompson reference

  219. there that We are inhaling and exhaling Christological

  220. air. If we would understand that we've already

  221. passed from the realm of passed through from

  222. the realm of death into eternal life, you can

  223. stop waiting to get to eternity and understand

  224. you are right now inside of eternity. Big stuff,

  225. I know challenging, I know to hear about, but

  226. just wrestle with these thoughts. You see, judgment

  227. is not God losing control. Judgment is God making

  228. things right. Alright, let's look at another

  229. scripture here. Let's go to Hebrews and we're

  230. going to look at chapter 12 and I'm going to

  231. read chapter 12 verses 5 through 11. So just

  232. bear with me, follow along with me, get your

  233. Bible out. and it says this have you forgotten

  234. his encouraging words spoken to you as his children

  235. he said my child don't underestimate the value

  236. of the discipline of the Lord or get depressed

  237. when he has to correct you for the Lord's training

  238. of your life is the evidence of his faithful

  239. love and when he draws you to himself now pay

  240. attention to the language here when he draws

  241. you to himself Means you can stop striving to

  242. get to Christ and understand that he is the one

  243. who's doing the drawing to him It proves that

  244. you are his delightful child Fully embrace God's

  245. correction as part of your training for he is

  246. doing what any loving father does for his children

  247. For who has ever heard of a child who never had

  248. to be corrected We should all welcome God's discipline

  249. as the validation of authentic sonship For if

  250. we have never once endured His correction, it

  251. only proves we are strangers and not sons. And

  252. isn't it true that we respect our earthly fathers

  253. even though they corrected and disciplined us?

  254. then we should demonstrate an even greater respect

  255. for God our spiritual father as we submit to

  256. his life -giving discipline our parents corrected

  257. us for the short time of our childhood as it

  258. seemed good to them but God corrects us throughout

  259. our lives for our own good giving us an invitation

  260. to share his holiness now all discipline seems

  261. to be painful at the time yet later now pay attention

  262. It will produce a transformation of character,

  263. bringing a harvest of righteousness and peace

  264. to those who yield to it. So let's look at the

  265. difference between punishment and discipline.

  266. Punishment is motivated by revenge. Punishment

  267. is focused on pain. Punishment seeks payment.

  268. Discipline on the other other other side here

  269. is motivated by love it focuses on correction

  270. and it seeks growth and I can say this because

  271. I've been on both sides of this as a dad and

  272. becoming a better dad each Each day each moment.

  273. I don't always get it right, but I'm on that

  274. path to becoming the dad that my kids need There

  275. was a time that I did focus on the punishment

  276. side instead of discipline. I know what both

  277. sides of this coin looks like. I've been the

  278. one to punish my children instead of disciplining

  279. them. And so now I'm in this area now where I'm

  280. allowing Holy Spirit to try to help guide me

  281. to teach me more how to discipline them and not

  282. to punish them because punishment does not do

  283. anything, in my opinion, but reinforce that sinful

  284. behavior and that sinful identity that you have

  285. to now do something to for acceptance, for example.

  286. I hope that makes sense. but a loving father

  287. disciplines not to destroy a Loving father will

  288. discipline to do one thing and that is to restore

  289. All right, then we have Let's look at the father's

  290. heart as far as it comes to judgment So let's

  291. consider Luke chapter 15 and I'm not gonna read

    Luke 15 chapter mention

  292. all of that. I'm just going to summarize it basically.

  293. I think you can go read it. If you've grown up

  294. in church, you have probably heard the story

  295. of the prodigal son, which is fascinating because

  296. we've made this story more about the son than

  297. it is about the father. And I just leave that

  298. alone for now. But if you look at the father's

  299. heart in judgment and look at Luke chapter 15,

    Luke 15 chapter mention

  300. let's just think about what happened. The the

  301. child the son essentially treats the father as

  302. he's dead When he's asking for his inheritance,

  303. he says I want mine here and this is my version.

  304. I want my inheritance I want it now. I'm leaving

  305. you. I'm good. Just good riddance Just give me

  306. my half and let me get out of here And so what

  307. does the father do he hands over his inheritance

  308. to him and the son takes off The son takes off

  309. and he goes and waste every bit of the inheritance

  310. and eventually finds himself eating what the

  311. pigs eat. And then he begins to be reminded and

  312. begins to come into remembrance of how his father's

  313. servants were treated even better than this.

  314. And so he begins to want to make his way back

  315. home and he knows that he needs to just tell

  316. his dad that I'm not even worthy to be called

  317. a son anymore. Just let me be a servant. So he

  318. goes, heads home, he starts rehearsing the speech.

  319. And then when he shows up and his father sees

  320. him, his father does the unthinkable and begins

  321. to run toward his son. Just go study that on

  322. your own. Why is he running? The importance of

  323. that. Because in that culture that should not

  324. have been a thing But the father takes off running

  325. toward his son who has now come home And he tries

  326. to get his speech out tries to get his letter

  327. of acceptance out if you will To say this is

  328. my rundown of you know, how horrible I am, but

  329. please accept me just as your servant and His

  330. father doesn't want to hear any of that Instead,

  331. in that moment, his father begins to tell the

  332. people around him, go get me the ring, go get

  333. me a robe, go get me something to put on his

  334. feet, and then go kill the fatted calf. So there

  335. was something already, in my opinion, this is

  336. just how I take when I read that story now, there

  337. was something already set aside for when he made

  338. his return. His father said, that's the one that

  339. we're going to celebrate with. So just think

  340. of this story from Luke 15. The father never

  341. in this story punishes the son. What does he

  342. do? He won't even let him get his apology out

  343. before telling him, just hush son. I don't want

  344. to hear all that. That's not who you are. The

  345. important part is you're home now. And what does

  346. he do? He doesn't punish. No, he begins to restore

  347. him back to sonship. Think and just think about

  348. this this this truth here When the Sun is out

  349. in the far country wasting it all in eating with

  350. pigs in That very moment. He is still a son His

  351. sonship never changed His circumstances may have

  352. the position that he was in and he found himself

  353. in may have changed, but he was always a son

  354. in the father's eyes. And so when he shows back

  355. up on the scene, begins to take off running,

  356. calling for the ring and the rope and all that

  357. stuff has significance. You can go study that

  358. on your own. But what is he doing? He's restoring

  359. him essentially as if he had never left. Wrap

  360. your mind around that. He's essentially is restoring

  361. him. back as if he had never left the home. Man,

  362. this is good news. This is the gospel, my friend.

  363. This is the word we have to it. I want to say

  364. something very challenging, but I want you to

  365. hear it and hear it from the heartbeat of the

  366. father. The person taking a needle out of their

  367. arm right now is just as holy, just as anointed,

  368. just as righteous as you are. Listening to this

  369. podcast just as holy just as righteous Just as

  370. loved as I am recording this podcast right now

  371. There's the only difference is you and I are

  372. beginning into come into alignment with that

  373. and maybe they just don't know that truth yet

  374. Can I help you understand that the Muslim? the

  375. Democrat, the Republican, whatever separation

  376. that you want to try to use and understand this.

  377. I heard this from Tommy Miller this week. It

  378. was kind of talking about this. But understand

  379. when you begin to put labels on things and begin

  380. to look down on people because they're this or

  381. that What you are effectively doing in that moment

  382. is beginning to grab on to the belief that their

  383. life is less important because of x y and z and

  384. That you matter more than they do because you

  385. think rightly See a problem in this But instead

  386. if you would look at these individuals, whoever

  387. you disagree with, whoever gets on your nerves

  388. the worst, whoever you think is too far gone,

  389. and understand the truth that that individual

  390. is just as holy, just as righteous, just as everything,

  391. just as set apart, just as chosen, just as worthy

  392. as you are. Then you begin to see people as Christ

  393. sees them All right, let's look at Isaiah chapter

    Isaiah 1:25

  394. 1 verse 25 it says I will put my fiery hand upon

  395. you and Purify you with fire into something clean

  396. The NLT says this this he said excuse me NLT

  397. says I will raise my fist against you I will

  398. melt you down and skim off your slag. I will

  399. remove all of your impurities Judgment removes

  400. corruption so that righteousness can remain.

  401. Again, think back to last week's teaching on

  402. fire. What does fire do? I understand fire can

  403. destroy. Again, ask yourself, what is it destroying?

  404. But fire also purifies. Fire calls this thing

  405. to come to the surface so that the impurities

  406. can be scooped away. There can be no perception

  407. of the world in God without radical repentance

  408. and without a continual change of mind. We are

  409. to see each stone, each leaf, each blade of grass

  410. Each frog, each human face, for what it truly

  411. is and all the distinctness and intensity of

  412. its specific being, true mysticism is to discover

  413. the extraordinary in the ordinary. Think about

  414. what I just said. True mysticism is to discover

  415. the extraordinary in the ordinary. To see the

  416. Christ in the individual that you think is the

  417. lowest. The one that you can't stand. The person

  418. that gets on your nerves. The group of people

  419. that you think are completely wrong. And discover

  420. the extraordinary in the ordinary. No existing

  421. thing is despicable. For as God's handiwork,

  422. each has its unique place in the created order.

  423. These are just some notes that I have here. The

  424. contemplation of nature. means that we see all

  425. things persons and moments as signs and sacraments

  426. of God in our spiritual vision. We are not only

  427. to see each thing in sharp relief standing out

  428. and all the brilliance of a specific being. But

  429. we are also to see each thing as transparent

  430. in and through each created thing. We are to

  431. discern the creator. Understand this, that creation

  432. leads us to God and God sends us back again to

  433. creation, enabling us to look at nature with

  434. the eyes of Adam in paradise. For seeing all

  435. things in God, we see them with a vividness that

  436. they would never otherwise possess. We are to

  437. see all things as essentially sacred as a gift

  438. from God in a means of communion with Him. It

  439. does not however follow that we are to accept

  440. the fallen world on its own terms. This is the

  441. unhappy mistake of much secular Christianity

  442. in the contemporary West. All things are indeed

  443. sacred in their true being according to their

  444. innermost essence, but our relationship to God's

  445. creation has been distorted by sin, original

  446. and personal, and we shall not rediscover the

  447. intrinsic sacredness unless our heart is purified.

  448. Without self -denial, without ascetic discipline,

  449. we cannot affirm the true beauty of the world.

  450. That is why there can be no genuine contemplation

  451. without repentance. What is repentance? Go back

  452. and look at that word. It's metanoia. To repent.

  453. Go study that on your own. What does it mean

  454. to come into repentance? What does it mean to

  455. repent? It's more than, I'm sorry. It's a changing

  456. of how we think. It's coming back to our senses.

  457. It's turning to go in the other direction. But

  458. how do you do that unless you feed your mind

  459. other stuff? You keep putting trash in and trash

  460. is what you get out. You begin to feel yourself

  461. and understand coming to alignment and to agreement

  462. with the truth that you have been given, the

  463. mind of Christ, that you are in Christ and Christ

  464. is in you. Step into that revelation and see

  465. what begins to happen in your life. Pay attention

  466. to what it just what I just read you all things

  467. are indeed sacred all Things all things are indeed

  468. sacred Because I grew up in the world where there

  469. there there was There was Secular industry and

  470. then you had the quote -unquote Christian industry

  471. I'm just gonna be honest with you. I no longer

  472. support that mindset I think we are called to

  473. be kingdom minded, Christ minded image bearers

  474. and influence all of the world, all of creation

  475. with the image of God to speak back to creation,

  476. who she is and how she should respond and to

  477. unveil the Christ hidden within sons and daughters.

  478. Remember Romans 8, the earth is groaning and

  479. travailing for the manifestation of the sons

  480. and daughters of Yahweh. Get to partner with

  481. heaven with the Trinity to see humanity and the

  482. world redeemed. Big deal. You're a big deal.

  483. Last verse here, let's look at James chapter

  484. two, verse 13. And it says there will be no mercy

  485. for those who have not shown mercy to others.

  486. But if you have been merciful, God will be merciful

  487. when he judges you. That tells us that God's

  488. final word is not punishment, but it's mercy.

  489. If judgment were only punishment, not a single

  490. one of us would survive. But judgment in scripture,

  491. it's corrective. And what does it remove? It

  492. removes things like pride, like violence, like

  493. corruption, like injustice, never people. Judgment

  494. is God refusing to leave evil untouched. And

  495. the problem is that so many people, myself included,

  496. grew up terrified of judgment. But judgment in

  497. scripture is not the rage of an angry, distant

  498. God. Judgment in scripture, it is the love of

  499. a faithful father. What if what if judgment is

  500. not something to fear, but something to trust?

  501. So. This whole episode here Was it caused you

  502. to rent maybe have a different thought and to

  503. rediscover? Maybe what judgment actually means

  504. it's not about revenge Judgment is about restoration

  505. This is not about God turning against you this

  506. that this is God turning you back toward life

  507. and That my friend is good news And that's where

  508. we're going to end this episode. Listen, tune

  509. in next week when we begin to talk about the

  510. Lake of Fire. Yes, the Lake of Fire. We're going

  511. to discuss that next week. But I hope this episode

  512. causes you to rethink what judgment means and

  513. what judgment looks like when we hear about God

  514. judging us. Maybe you can have a different view

  515. now. So I hope this helps. I pray you all have

  516. a blessed week and continue to represent the

  517. Kingdom of God. Be blessed. Thanks for spending
